The UH men’s swimming team will be doing the haka soon.

Before they taught their teammates one word, facial expression or body movement associated with the tribal dance known as the Haka, they looked each man in the eye and demanded an answer: Would you stand on the pool deck before an NCAA swim meet and put your whole heart and soul into this?

Every last swimmer on the University of Hawaii men’s roster told native Hawaiians Ilia Reyes and Davis Kane, yes.

“It’s all-out or nothing,” Kane said. “We explained to them, it’s not something you fool around with. It’s serious.”

Just thinking about the Warriors taking the field tomorrow without the benefit of the 12th man in the bleachers. Seems so ridiculous to have a team in the WAC that is so far outta WAC!

Unfortunately, it works both ways and their fans must feel the same way when their guys have to travel half way around the globe to play in our sandbox.

So what’s the solution? It seems obvious they be teamed with a conference in their region? Shouldn’t *Boise* Benson be taking the lead on this issue? Who should we be lighting a fire under to institute change?

Surely those folks who run things in the WAC and consider themselves smarter than us, can figga out the logistics involved in this glaring geographical error!

My 2 cents for Tuesday.

Re the proposed fund-raiser mentioned a few days ago to send the some of the Pep Band and some of the cheer-leading squad to the San Jose State game on November 21?

Is there any interest from Tsai-kos to plan & put on a two-part fund-raiser to benefit the band & cheerleading squad? The first part is for people who live here and are able to take part and the second one is for people who don’t and/or can’t.

If you’d like to learn more, please send an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com by Wednesday evening, September 30 – that’s tomorrow evening.

Part One of the fund-raiser would be held on October.31 in the morning pending approval of the various UHManoa administrative & faculty offices.

Part Two of the fund-raiser would run from the date of approval through Thursday, November 19.

Meanwhile, start saving your HI-5 cans & bottles to bring to the next T-Gate on Saturday, October 10. The beneficiary this time is the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s SAVE OUR SPORTS Drive.

Let us hope that Hawaii stays ahead of Kentucky! I can only vote once more (tomorrow) before the deadline.

A tsunami has hit American Samoa.

With BSU currently at #5 and several of the teams ahead of them guaranteed to lose (since they play each other), they actually have a shot at the National Championship game if they win out (they have to travel to Aloha Stadium, so UH could end their chances of course). This article says that the bottom half of the WAC will bring down BSU’s chances for the title.

The Broncos, who gave college football one of its most enduring memories when it beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl a couple of years ago, are ranked No. 5 in both this week’s USA Today Coaches poll and the first Harris Interactive poll. Those are the two human polls that—along with the average of several computer polls—make up the BCS Standings, which will be released for the first time on Oct. 18. On Dec. 6 the finally standings will be released and the top two teams in those standings will play for the BCS national championship on Jan. 8 in Pasadena, Calif.

There has been some discussion about what would happen if the Broncos went 13-0 (they play an extra game because they go to Hawaii this season) and the winners of the Big Boy conferences all have one loss. After what happened to Utah last season (the Utes went undefeated and didn’t get a sniff at the national title), would the voters in the human polls decide that it was time to give a little guy at shot and see what he could do in the big game?

They can’t. Not if they are doing their homework.

Eleven of the 12 Division I-A teams on the Boise State schedule are rated 67 or worse.

Of those 11 teams, four are rated 103 or worse. To put it another way, there are 18 college football teams that rank 103 or worse. Boise State plays four of them.

I hope that the damage to American Samoa is as minimal as possible and that their people are safe.

New Orleans website has a couple of quotes about the Warriors.

“They’re as good as I’ve ever seen them,” said Tech coach Derek Dooley, whose team came within an eyelash – a 45-44 overtime game – of ending Hawaii’s unbeaten season in 2007. “Everybody thought they’d be a little down this year, but I think they actually look better. They’re throwing it as well as they did two years ago, just piercing everybody.”

That’s not a good sign for the Bulldogs (1-2), who haven’t faced a prolific passing attack. Heading into the 7 p.m. mid-week contest, Tech has gone up against ground-bound teams in Auburn, Navy and Nicholls State. Even worse, the last two are pure option teams – about a 180-degree turnaround from Wednesday’s foe.

“Now we’ve had to switch our personnel around, switch who’s in the game, basically change the whole scheme,” Dooley said. “It’s not like they’re having to learn a whole new defense, but everything’s different. This is four-wide and throwing it every down.”

Interesting scenario with BSU. The BCS switch will be turned on for the first time this season the week they play UH. What perfect timing! Barring any major injuries, I don’t see them getting pass us. But, if they do, There is plenty games left to make a pretty strong media push for them for one of the top 2 spots.

It will be very interesting to watch.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has confirmed that a tsunami has struck American Samoa following an earthquake on Upolu Island.

The wave measured 1.5m – large enough to be considered dangerous – and a 0.7m wave struck Western Samoa according to spokesperson Nathan Becker.

Mass casualties in the south-east villages have been reported to 3 News by Fire Commissioner Tony Hill. Emergency teams have been sent to the area.

Unconfirmed radio reports suggest that two villages in Samoa have also been hit by a tsunami. The villages affected are Siumu and Lotofago.

RE: “Mass casualites….” I cannot find any corroborating reports.

Any reports if the Tsunami heading toward Hawaii has any serious height?

The last Tsunami I’ve experienced in Hawaii was three inches (thank God). Was very eary, like a ghost town. At least the warning system proved itself very well.

At least the Samoan People were smart enough to know what to do when the earth quake hit, at least it appears so, unlike the Indonesians a while back.

At sea today, but I woke up early enough to eat buffet breakfast and still make it to the Napkin Folding class at 1030! I’ve long wanted to learn how to fold the cloth napkins used aboard ship and I have missed offerings in the past–and not all ships offer this activity. It ranks right up there with animals created with regular towels. OK, I guess you have to see it–I’ll post some pix in FaceBook when I get home. 🙂

Today’s snapshot of shipboard life: similar to previous port days — big $ bingo, Wii fit and bowling, golf putting tournament, trivia contests and “What’s My Line” game show, slot tournament, and vendor jewelry presentations and art auctions. A free family pizza-making activity in the Italian speciality restaurant.

Back at sea and for the alcohol-inclined the 0800-1100 Happy Hour specials (Bloody Mary, Screwdriver, Mimosa, and Kir Royale) @$4.25 are in the ship’s 11 bars. NCL-“U “(university?) courses today include: “International Wine Tasting” ($15) session in the LeBistro restaurant at 1400 and “Global Beer Tasting” ($15 ) in the Sports Bar at 1600. But the big promo is the “Try Before you Buy” tequila tasting (Patron, Don Julio, and Mailagro) in the Duty-Free shop at 1830-2000 with 10% discount…to pack in your suitcase. 🙂

Tonight’s professional theater performance is by the Jean Anne Ryan Company called “Encore”. Song and dance from hits from Mama Mia, Wicked, The Jersey Boys, and Hairspray.

Hi there! I saw your post in the previous blog and felt compelled to respond.

I’ve been in DC Metro for just under a week now. Of course it’s gonna take me a couple more weeks before my work hours and work location are set in stone. I’ve had 7:00-15:30 these past couple days, but will eventually switch to 9:00-17:30 after the three-day weekend (Columbus/Discoverer’s Day).

The agency has already notified me that they’ll be moving my work from DC proper to some leased government office space in Arlington. Fine with me…..shortens what was already a short commute to a single 10 minute bus ride.

I’ve been missing most of the TV shows since everything (inc. MNF) comes on so darn late. I guess TiVo would be my friend!!!!!

I don’t think Tsunami waves recede like regular waves do. They keep rolling… rollling.. rolling.. forward so that even a 1′ wave can have a serious impact.

Egads, I wasn’t even thinking about all the boats in the yacht harbors and bays … ! Hope those that can have at least dropped anchors even if they are tied down.

I wonder if at times like this it wouldn’t be better to take one’s boat to the other side of the island? Or is the island too small to make a difference?

lucky for us the Tsunami will not be headed our way…..the warnings changed hourly going from long board, to short board, to boogie board, to I’m bored in the course of our preparation.

HOWEVER, there has been damage and numerous deaths to people in Samoa, so let us continue to pray for their safety.

Finally back from my Vegas/Disneyland adventure.

The UNLV game was a hard one to swallow and like LD said during the Tsai/Wai show that the team beat themselves. There was no way that UNLV beat us. We where are own worst enemy. We should have beat them by at least three touchdowns but enough with that game and on to La Tech.

I gotta say,

If we can put together a full game worth of hell like we did during the first half of the Wazzu game, then I do not see anybody beating us. We have a very solid team and with the return of Fonoti we will be that much better.

The only team that will beat us the rest of the way imho will be ourselves. We have the potential to be that good and the Unlv game was a joke. You can put that up on there bulletin board cause they know that to.

i think that the early season downgrades of the hawaii program have yet to hit the oddsmakers. it usually will take four games before they adjust. i am sure many are weighing the fact that it is our third consecutive road game (thanks herman) and it could finally take its toll upon our warriors.

Second, the University should pick up the costs to send the band members and the cheerleading squad to away games like the teams in the SEC and other BCS conferences do; however, reality raises its ugly head since the UH operating budget has been decimated. Doing so – in mufiwords – is a nice-2-have, not a need-2-have. Therefore, the fans and UH Athletic Supporters need to step forward and help out if they feel that sending the band, drum majorette, and cheerleaders is of value to the team and to the University’s image.
