LAS VEGAS — Except for the first five minutes, UNLV’s football practices are closed to the media. Television reporters are allowed to do interviews before practices; print reporters do interviews after practice. In a game of spy vs. spy this week, UH closed its practices to UNLV’s regular reporters. (The practices were open to reporters from Hawai‘i.) UH even required the Vegas reporters to do only phone interviews with UH players. That’s more lenient than some WAC schools, who do not make their players available for interviews with out-of-town reporters in the week preceding a game.

On the road, a team has to make adjustments. The crutches are used by defensive end Paipai Falemalu in his treatment of a sprained ankled, and by the team as a down marker.

  31. madeinhawaii September 18, 2009 9:48 am

    Hmmm Boise and Fresno today…..

that’s would be a good game to tape. This game will/should expose any weakness in both teams.

I wanna see them go into double overtime… then I don’t care who wins.

  39. Kazz (NINE more for Coach Shoji) September 18, 2009 10:10 am

If FSU wins, no WAC rep for a BCS game, BUT if BSU wins… STILL NO WAC REP FOR A BCS BOWL GAME!

They rate at which BYU is currently heading in, there is no way Florida State is going to beat them in Provo and Utah has dropped off since last season. TCU is the only competition BYU will face this season, but even then.. PAU.

Oh not to mention that BYU is ranked above BSU.

Even if Boise goes undefeated and BYU is also, we are back to where we were last season with this situation and people can forget about a BCS bowl game featuring two undefeated non-BCS conferences reps.

They’ll never allow this to happen.

Oh… and Fresno State will have the lead for most of this game and then BLOW it in the 4th again. 😆

  40. madeinhawaii September 18, 2009 10:13 am

Know how we give local boys the cold shoulder when they come to town to play against our Warriors? What about the boys that play for Navy or some other military academy? Anybody see that as a different situation than just going away to play for a mainland college?

  47. Garret September 18, 2009 10:30 am

Article about some of the Athletic facility renovations that have been funded.

The university is moving forward with plans for major renovations to the women’s locker rooms at a projected estimated cost of about $2.6 million according to the University of Hawaii’s Office of Capital Improvements.

The project will create a new locker room for the women’s water polo team and renovate the existing locker room for the swimming and diving team in the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. It also includes an upgrade and renovation of the existing women’s locker room in the Athletics Complex for the other eight women’s athletic teams.

The Office of Capital Improvements recognized that the existing locker rooms are too small for the number of female athletes that they are supposed to accommodate, and also addresses gender equity issues in the University of Hawaii at Manoa Athletics Department. The renovations will help fulfill the university’s commitment to providing comparable facilities for both men’s and women’s sports and avoid sanctions for non-compliance with Title IX.

  48. Garret September 18, 2009 10:31 am

No surprise after Bess caught all 7 passes thrown in his direction in their first regular season game–his stock is up in this article.

WR Davone Bess – I can see why Bess continues to serve as Chad Pennington’s favorite target, a distinction he’d held since the second-half of last season. Bess, who caught all seven of the passes thrown his way against the Falcons (producing 57 receiving yards) is a heat seeking missile when it comes to the first down marker. He sets himself down right in front of it, making him very Pennington friendly. Not only are his in-game reads good, but when his quarterback is scrambling Bess quickly comes back to the ball. The problem is, Pennington had little else to lean on, and in order for this offense to work the other offensive weapons must do more.

  49. Garret September 18, 2009 10:31 am

I’m glad that Colt’s surgery went well!

Quarterback Colt Brennan underwent successful surgery this week in Colorado to repair a torn left labrum in his hip and is expected to be back in the area today. Redskins Coach Jim Zorn said Brennan, who was placed on injured reserves two weeks ago, likely will be in attendance at Sunday’s home opener against the Rams.

The surgery was similar to the one Brennan underwent prior to the 2008 season on his right hip, Zorn said. He said doctors confirmed that the injury is what led to the hamstring problems that bothered Brennan late in training camp.

  50. Garret September 18, 2009 10:33 am

Note that the article also mentions that Colt suffered his injury in their *first* preseason game…that means that he was injured and had hamstring problems all preseason, which could be a major reason for why he struggled this preseason.

  51. SteveM September 18, 2009 10:33 am

Hey βρεω808 — when are you arriving (if you’re not here already with your buddy…). My view is the strip. You the one emptying the ice machine?

Peaches and I have fallen into our usual shipboard routine–sleep until 0930, go for the buffet breakfast, and head for the pool/hot tubs. In this case, slip “play in the casino” between breakfast and the pool (also skip the 1300 sit down lunch in fine dining)…. 😆

OK, heading for the pool now…then get ready for some las vegas-recommended Japanese fuud and custom karaoke!

  53. madeinhawaii September 18, 2009 10:55 am

What may be working in Colt’s favor is how the team was pulling for him when he threw that interception. You want that in your QB. You want a QB that every player stands behind and Colt is certainly eliciting that at Washington.

  54. UHfan808 September 18, 2009 11:01 am

Boise State playing Fresno on ESPN. If you don’t have a tv…
    http://channelsurfing.net/watch-espn.html

Boise scored quickly on a pick 6. 7-0. They are overpowering Fresno.

  80. FloridaTed September 18, 2009 3:14 pm

    Hi, Liz.

Thanks a lot, have fun and win some money.

  81. LizKauai (iPhone) September 18, 2009 3:19 pm

The Boise- Fresno game is on in the lobby. We are ready for the Jersey Boys!

  82. Unkanesson September 18, 2009 3:25 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko Nation —
Broncos bucking the ‘Dogs so far 10-0. The only bright spot for Fresno — just recovered a mishandled handoff in Boise’s backfield at the 50. But Boise’s D is in control so far. Sack on 3rd down. 3-and-out. Punt.
Wish I could join you for the party in Vegas!! Sounds a bit like the Sugar Bowl trip.
Hope the blowout is in our favor this time!
    GO WARRIORS!!

  83. TChahng [오키나와] September 18, 2009 3:26 pm

Fresno State can’t put together a sustained drive. All the FSU receivers are blanketed by BSU speedy DBs.

  85. curveball September 18, 2009 3:42 pm

Boise/Fresno is already getting ugly..17-0 Boise 2nd quarter

  86. jojo ® September 18, 2009 3:50 pm

thanks for the score updates. Even though I don’t like either team

  87. Unkanesson September 18, 2009 4:16 pm

Sheez, I stepped away for a few minutes after Boise made it 24-3, and just came back and it’s 24-17! Two long runs by Matthews, and it’s a ball game!
Then Fresno throws another pick. Ya can’t give Boise freebies like that!

  88. NYUH September 18, 2009 4:23 pm

Fresno showing a new offense with a frosh RB Rouse and they benched their QB.

  89. NYUH September 18, 2009 4:26 pm

    BS special teams killing FS

  90. NYUH September 18, 2009 4:37 pm

FS shows life with a big run for a TD and a D stop 24-10.

  91. NYUH September 18, 2009 4:43 pm

Matthews with another big run 24-17

  92. BowsForever September 18, 2009 4:46 pm

Silly Fresno. Kick it to the guy who didn’t do the needless wind sprint. I’m thinking Boise by 10-14.

  93. Unkanesson September 18, 2009 5:00 pm

So Fresno forces a field goal by Boise, then comes out playing long ball with the passing game (after only 10 yards passing in the first half!)! 3 long pass plays later, TD!! 27-24 BSU. Gotta give credit to the Fresno coaching staff — surprised everybody, especially the Doncos!

  94. Unkanesson September 18, 2009 5:04 pm

    Holy Quap!
Boise comes back with a long run by Avery, who fumbles at the one, the ball tumbles into the end zone where a hussling WR Titus Young falls on it for a TD!
I really dislike both of these teams, but this is one entertaining football game!

  95. Slugger September 18, 2009 5:07 pm

I hope the coaches show our players the last play by Boise’s Titus Young. Man, if hadn’t been following his receiver, Fresno would have the ball & no Boise TD.

  96. 99club September 18, 2009 5:17 pm

Good evening Tsaikos! Great game on ESPN showcasing the WAC. Hope y’all are having fun in LV! We’ll be looking for you on TV tomorrow!

  97. Unkanesson September 18, 2009 5:22 pm

Okay gang, time to go work.
I’ll lurk in tomorrow, and I’ll be listening for ya tomorrow night.
GO WARRIORS!! RUN DA REBELS OUTA THERE!!

  98. FloridaTed September 18, 2009 5:22 pm

On behalf of all Tsaikos and Warriors, I would like to thank Boise and Fresno for providing such excellent practice films for our team.

Can we stop a smash mouth running game from a good team? If we can, we’ll beat both of them at home.

  99. Cindy & Greg Cee September 18, 2009 5:23 pm

Good evening, all. Glad to know everyone is having fun in Vegas!
    Take lots of pics.
    Go Warriors!!

  100. cavewarrior September 18, 2009 5:24 pm

last 3 fresno offensive plays…as RK would say, their play caller suffered a brain f*rt…

  101. Boogerball September 18, 2009 5:27 pm

There’s someone who’s been visiting this blog for several months now who uses the term βρεω in his name. What does the word mean? When I did a search, nothing came up except in an old German language document

  102. Jason September 18, 2009 5:34 pm

Boogerball: That’s brew808. He’s using Greek letters in his name. 😛

  103. 99club September 18, 2009 5:36 pm

    Boogerball-
That’s Brew using Greek letters for his handle. The second character is actually ‘Rho,’ according to what I found on the net.

  104. Slugger September 18, 2009 5:44 pm

    We’d better contain Ryan Matthews!

  105. FloridaTed September 18, 2009 5:47 pm

Crazy game, that Matthews kid is saving Fresno right now. I hope we’ll have an answer for him.

  106. cavewarrior September 18, 2009 5:51 pm

Why am I yelling at my tv and the fresno no-fast defenders….feeling frustrated…do I want Fresno or Foise to win???….I don’t knooooowww…I’m sooooooo confused!!!!

  107. Ralph September 18, 2009 6:10 pm

do we have enough speed to contain Avery and Matthews. Got to have good open field tackling.

  108. Slugger September 18, 2009 6:16 pm

Going to WVB. Hope I get to see the end of the game before I have to leave.

  109. LizKauai (iPhone) September 18, 2009 6:41 pm

Jersey Boys was fantastic! Now headed to karaoke.

  110. 99club September 18, 2009 6:45 pm

    Liz-
Knock ’em dead at the karaoke!

  111. tom September 18, 2009 6:55 pm

VOTE… 50,000 BOOKS for our Keikis!

    http://booksforkids.firstbook.org/whatbook/voteconfirmation.php

Here in Sin City! Dropped by the Ohana room wearing my official Tsaiko polo shirt – didn’t recognize any Tsaikos there. Heard I missed Gerard by a hair. Did speak to Don Meir and JD and met Amy Hanalaliil (sorry for the messed up spelling). The Rainbottique was selling up a storm. Apologize for the spelling but the keyboard on the Lenovo is 3/4 size and too close together.

Go Bows/Warriors – and did you everf notice how time becomes slower and slower when waiting for kickoff OR when the wife takes you shopping?

  112. isleboy September 18, 2009 7:56 pm

Jersey Boys….lol…remember Frankie Valli and Four Seasons at Sheraton Waikiki…..great line “This is usually the part of the show where the ladies throw some underwear at us”….its Hawaii…women gasped….
    audience laughed….

  115. gmahoney September 18, 2009 8:41 pm

    Slugger #79,

I did secure an invite to watch the Warriors at my old alma mater, SFS, but I convinced the hubby that the cost for PPV vs the individual game price was more economical. He bit, so we have the game at my house. It’s good because I don’t wanna yell at the TV in front of the nuns. Old habits (and respect) dies hard. Plus, drinking and driving from Manoa to the 96744 is not a smart thing to do.

  121. madeinhawaii September 18, 2009 9:14 pm

Wow… 85 points of video footage on Fresno and Boise.
    Lots and lots of offense…

  122. Ralph September 18, 2009 9:44 pm

bighilo it’s only midnight, the action is about to start.

  123. Slugger September 18, 2009 9:52 pm

I’m watching the replay of the Fresno – Boise game. I noticed that there’s no trash on the field. I did see a red streamer when Ryan Matthews ran one of his 60 yd TDs. But no littering. Couldn’t someone get the stadium to tell people that tearing up paper and throwing it onto the field is trashy? (pun intended) Watch other national football games…no other school litters the field. It’s not safe for players to run on a trashy field, esp. on Aloha Stadium’s worn surface.

  124. LizKauai (iPhone) September 18, 2009 9:54 pm

#112- we walked into the room and Diana thrust the mike into my hand and I ended up singing the Hawaiian Wedding Song with Midnight!

    Now pau.
    Nitey nite and SWD!!!

  125. Ralph September 18, 2009 10:23 pm

D1 Punahou 13, StL 12 at the half.

  126. Ralph September 18, 2009 10:24 pm

Campbell 20, Leilehua 0 at the half.

  127. Ralph September 18, 2009 10:37 pm

Na Wahine won. Wasn’t a well played match on either side of the net. Na Wahine got to play at a high level, too much roller coaster based on the competition. They played poorly against Cal, came back and played one of the best matches against Stanford and tonight, hard to explain the team barely hit over .200 for the three game match.

  128. Boogerball September 18, 2009 10:54 pm

Thanks guys. Or is that not politically correct. Thanks boys and girls for the answer about the meaning of βρεω

btw – my tv set has a total of 78 channels. Is it necessary to buy a new tv set to watch PPV at home? Since my spouse works for the state and I’m seriously under-employed, that is not likely to happen anytime soon.

  129. Ralph September 18, 2009 10:56 pm

Just checked out K-State wahine tennis team, 8 members, none from the U.S., mostly east European, Spain and S. America. Last year they had 2 Russians. maybe UH should go back to the foreign recruits to be competitive in women sports. Golf, Tennis, Swimming, water polo, wbb and softball have had a few europeans and aussies but they need more to win the WAC

  130. HiFlyer September 19, 2009 3:15 am
