Warming up

LAS VEGAS — Hey, who turned the heat up?

* * * * *

Paipai Falemalu, considered to be UH’s best pass-rushing defensive end (at least until Fetaiagogo Fonoti returns), suffered an apparent sprained right ankle during today’s practice. Falemalu was on crutches afterward, but he said he does not consider the injury to be serious.

And in the really big game … the equipment managers won last night’s bowling challenge. Derek Inouchi, UH’s sports media relations director, rolled an event-best 188. (Yikes. I wrote 288 earlier. My apologies — except to Derek, who kind of liked having people think he rolled a 288).

  15. cheepono September 16, 2009 8:55 am

  16. wena September 16, 2009 8:56 am

Steve…now that you are well….go make some big bucks!!

  17. djmitcho September 16, 2009 9:02 am

LizK, even the 6in subs at subway are not “low” carb. The bread alone averages about 38-40 grams of carbs. That’s why I don’t eat there anymore. Plus there are better sandwich places here in spokane than subway.

  18. Maverick September 16, 2009 9:04 am

espn now showing the 2002 texas/texas tech game. Good plug showing coach on the sidelines giving the business to Texas.
Liz – come on, meatball sandwichs the only way 2 go!

  19. GRM September 16, 2009 9:07 am

Just checked – Saturday’s game will be on Oceanic’s digital channel 247 (CBS College Sports) at 5 PM., not on PPV 255.

  20. Slugger September 16, 2009 9:10 am

Hey, you’re still in the desert. It’s going to be hot for at least another month.

Hope Paipai’s ankle is better by Saturday.

    IMUA WARRIORS!!!

  21. al September 16, 2009 9:14 am

grm….i was told last night that it would be shown on 247, 255, and 1255 and all will be ppv events.

  22. postmanke September 16, 2009 9:15 am

Steve M – You got mail.

  29. Dirty Commish September 16, 2009 9:36 am

  32. Shannon September 16, 2009 9:38 am

    @d1: thats what I figured…with the budget cuts…Red Rock would be a little steep…LOL

  33. Shannon September 16, 2009 9:40 am

Penis enlargement? 3-4 inches? Who needs a 16 inch penis? LOL

  34. Shannon September 16, 2009 9:40 am

  35. Manoa Mist September 16, 2009 9:44 am

  36. Kokua September 16, 2009 9:49 am

Rebels favored by 7 to 7.5 —-hope we play like we did in the first half against the cougars, that game featured Dr J & Mr. Hyde. We all agree that our first half team was dynamite!

  37. madeinhawaii September 16, 2009 9:49 am

288? Awesome… what is that? 10 strikes and an 8 then spare?

But wang jokes, eh? It’s gonna be that kind of Wednesday.

  39. AZWARRIOR22 September 16, 2009 9:52 am

Tanks for the laugh…can’t wait to Saturday to see our Warriors up close at Sam Boyd stadium sticking it to the Rebels 🙂

  40. Kazz (NINE more for Coach Shoji) September 16, 2009 9:54 am

    Well when in “Rome”..

This reminds me of a riddle/joke a wise Tsaiko once told me:

What did the left n*t say to da right n*t?

“How you like dis guy in da middle?!?!?!?! Like make ‘big body’ yeah?”

  41. Shannon September 16, 2009 9:54 am

    LMAO @ Manoa…

here is an article from the Vegas paper….

  44. Garret September 16, 2009 10:22 am

    Liz,

The game is available in HD for Dish users on the mainland, but I guess the CBS CS channel isn’t in HD in Hawaii?

  45. Jack Flash September 16, 2009 10:24 am

Please- no more injuries! Go Warriors!

  46. Garret September 16, 2009 10:25 am

I hope that Paipai is okay! With all the injuries already to the DE position, losing him would really hurt.

  47. Jack Flash September 16, 2009 10:26 am

Will the ppv broadcast on channel 1255 be in HD?

  48. Garret September 16, 2009 10:27 am

The biggest schools in the Sacramento area met in football over the weekend and David Graves’ younger brother did very well in his first start. 342 yards and 5 TDs is really impressive!

The area’s biggest schools clashed helmets as early as Thursday of last week, as Folsom High School started where it left off from an impressive season a year ago to dominate Davis in on its own field, 41-21.

Dano Graves, filling in at quarterback after his big brother David Graves graduated to play for the University of Hawaii, performed brilliantly in his first performance, passing 17-24 for 342 yards and five touchdowns.

  49. Garret September 16, 2009 10:27 am

    Bess note:

Davone Bess(notes) picked up exactly where he left off in ’08, catching everything that was thrown his way (7-for-7). Bess caught 72 percent of the passes intended for him last season.

  50. Garret September 16, 2009 10:31 am

RGM update. He’s had success with runs from his slot position in several CFL games this season. RGM is 13th in yards from scrimmage in the CFL even though he’s gotten limited playing time.

Ryan Grice-Mullen had just a single carry for the Lions, but it turned into a one-yard TD, which is more than could be said for Martell Mallett who carried the ball a game-high 14 times and came away with 66 yards. Receiver Geroy Simon emerged with seven catches for 128 yards and a score as well for the losing side.

After 10 games, Mallett is still at the top of the list when it comes to yards from scrimmage with his 1,070, but he ranks just fifth in the CFL in combined yards to this point with 1,259 yards. Although he was used sparingly last week, Grice-Mullen ranks 13th on that same list with 817 total yards, so the Lions would be smart to give him a few more chances to help put points on the board.

  51. Kazz (NINE more for Coach Shoji) September 16, 2009 10:32 am

Caught only a little of the Call The Coach Show last night, but just enough to hear how UNLV’s head coach didn’t want to shake JJ’s hand in 2007 and even asked Coach Mack back then “why’d you keep blitzing us” when the game was already lost for UNLV.

Today UNLV’s radio play by play guy was on BC Show and he claims the running game for the Rebels is “suspect” at this time so perhaps the theory of repeating how we scored against Wazzu goes out the window in a sense of letting UNLV run the ball and eat their own clock.

I didn’t see the OSU/UNLV game, but I hear the Rebels only really packed it on in the 4th quarter against the Beavs, I guess it’s a mirror opposite of how we did at Seattle, except UNLV’s passing attack is most likely more potent than the Cougars.

This game MIGHT be a shut out, if our offense can be productive against a MUCH better pass rush and a MUCH better secondary in UNLV. Not sure how the Rebels plan to neutralize the middle of the field with their larger LBs having to go against Salas and Pilares, but as long as our offensive line can sustain the pass rush for at least 3 seconds, Alexander SHOULD have no time at all finding our slots making their way around the slower LBs for UNLV as Coach Mac says the LB corps for the Rebels aren’t the featured portion of the UNLV defense.

UNLV’s head coach may have created more “bulletin board” material for the Rebels for this game, as according to Bobby Curran this morning, their own local media sure isn’t doing their share of hyping the local crowd for this. UNLV is going to come out swinging in this contest and regardless of who has what kind of possession to start the game, UH is going to have to “weather” the storm either on defense or offense. “Weather the storm” in the 1st quarter and get into halftime with at least a two or three possession lead and I don’t know if the Rebels can rebound from that kind of deficit considering the late second debacle against Oregon State.

  52. W.M September 16, 2009 10:45 am

Steven, Do you have food poisoning or in-di-ges-tion….? Hope its not H1N1 from Seattle area. Take care, wash your hands and don’t give what you have to our boys! GO WARRIORS!!

  53. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2009 10:55 am

    W.M.
I think it was food poisoning because I puked a few times, or as we used to say: “I talked to Ralph on the big white phone.”

  54. madeinhawaii September 16, 2009 11:13 am

The Vote for the Davey O’brian candidate has started up again. So, how about us Warrior fans voting for our guy Greg Alexander. Okay, so maybe he won’t win, but he can still win our vote of confidence, eh? If you voted for Colt in 2007, just log in. If this is your first time, you’ll need to register.

    I voted for Greg Alexander.

  55. Rich2176 September 16, 2009 11:13 am

ST – Get better fast. Looking forward to hearing the lion on Friday night. Hope to see you tomorrow when I get to Vegas.

  56. Pomai September 16, 2009 11:24 am

Coach Mack please don’t let up, hit’em in the mouth on the first play and keep hitting them until the game is over, don’t let up, don’t play not to lose, keep the pedal to the metal for the whole game, score every time you can up till the ending gun. Blow them out as much as you can, if they want to call it running up the score then so be it, run it up all you can, show no mercy. I want to see lava win the pix’s with his 76 to 0 score.

  57. tom mui September 16, 2009 11:24 am

By special request – well, at least one person!

    REMINDER!!!!!

There is a book contest that awards 50,000 books to the state with the most votes.

It is easy to vote. All you have to do is visit the website once a day (14 days left) and choose Hawaii, and click to vote. You don’t have to fill in the other spots. Just go to the box that asks where you want 50,000 books to be sent, find Hawaii and click. AND YES, YOU ONLY HAVE TO CLICK ON *WHERE DO YOU WANT THE BOOKS TO GO….ITS THE ONLY REQUIRED FIELD.

    I’ve included the link: http://booksforkids.firstbook.org/whatbook/about.php

Come on Tsaikos – make like it was voting for Jasmine Trias!!!

  58. bighilofan2waitingatdeltagate22 September 16, 2009 11:33 am

hold on, we’re coming. we’re coming

  59. Dan-O September 16, 2009 11:33 am

Coach Sanford……we kept scoring touchdowns and blitzing cause this is FOOTBALL!!!!!

If you want a gentleman’s game (of fair play), may I suggest golf……where if we were kicking your ass in match play, we would concede your 20 foot putts to halve some holes.

  60. jm2375 September 16, 2009 11:34 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Happy hump day.

Hope all the Warriors with owees heal up before Sat.

Liz – set the dvr last night. 😀 Anybody think the game will last longer than 4 hrs? I’ll set the dvr for the vb replays later…

  64. oldie September 16, 2009 11:49 am

    Tom Mui,

    #57

Since I requested, I just went in and voted for Hawaii. Do they allow us to vote multiple times a day, or only once per day?

If I don’t screw up I’ll record the game for you. Still want to know if the broadcast will be in Hi-Def. The WSU game on channel 1255 was in SD.

  65. Slugger September 16, 2009 11:52 am

    tom mui,

Hawaii is now number 2 in the book contest! Keep passing this on, Tsaikos.

It’s a good thing that there was no CC at Camelias planned for this week, this place is next door.

  68. d1島 September 16, 2009 12:02 pm

    Slugger,

    YAY!

Musta been the 3 votes I just put in! 😆

  69. madeinhawaii September 16, 2009 12:04 pm

    Happy birthday, Chelsea!

    HiFlyer,

I saw that on the news this morning. I must have been dead asleep cuz I didn’t hear the five fire engines. Usually, I can hear all of the emergency vehicles going by. Wonder if they don’t use their sirens when there’s no traffic & it’s late at night so we can sleep?

  72. Slugger September 16, 2009 12:12 pm

Sorry to hear about Myles Brand passing on. I totally agreed with him firing Bobby Knight.

    Outta here for a bit…Esme & whoosh….

  73. Ralph September 16, 2009 12:21 pm

McTruck Midnight is moving to Arlington, how far is Marshall from Arlington?

  74. al September 16, 2009 12:22 pm

the book voting has hit the email circuits.
    who knows?

  75. Curt September 16, 2009 12:42 pm

I think we’re going to have a tough game at UNLV. After they’ve seen the Washington State game, I would expect that they’ll try extra hard to pressure and blitz us and not give Alexander all day to look for receivers. Time to step up guys.

  76. kymrykauai September 16, 2009 12:45 pm

Yay we are at the airport getting ready to head to vegas!!! See you all soon!

  77. Pete Jek September 16, 2009 12:49 pm

    T

  78. Curt September 16, 2009 12:50 pm

We’ll be headed to the airport late this afternoon. Yeehaw. Go Warriors.

  79. Pete Jek September 16, 2009 12:54 pm

The same was said about Fetaiagogo Fonoti not having a serious injury, and expecting to play relatively soon. It’s been 3 weeks since then, and his playing status remains in doubt.

I hope Paipai Falemalu being on crutches is more of a precaution than a necessity. The Warriors will need his pass-rushing skills to force the UNLV QB out of the pocket. I think when the opposing team’s O-Line breaks down and that happens, is when the Warriors are most able to create turnovers in fumbles forced and recovered, and in interceptions.

Falemalu will be crucial in that regard.

  80. Hoohiki September 16, 2009 1:02 pm

    tom mui,

Thanks for posting the link for the book contest. Thus far, Hawaii’s winning.
I hope our state get the 50,000 books for our na keiki this year. Oklahoma won in 2007 and Kentucky won in 2008. They are #2 and #3 currently behind HAWAII. Fifteen more days left to keep voting. It’s funny how Hawaii is always up for competition, be it American Idol, SYTYCD, Little League, Shane Victorino all star, warrior athletics…..we have PRIDE.

  81. d1島 September 16, 2009 1:11 pm

Looking at a webcam of Fremont St. by the Nugget.

Not very crowded. Must be too hot to be outside.

  82. Ralph September 16, 2009 1:13 pm

    i’m voting again

  83. d1島 September 16, 2009 1:15 pm

  86. mctruck September 16, 2009 1:33 pm

    Ralph,

Arlington, is about a couple hundred miles west of Marshall, Texas; actually, I’m closer to Shreveport, Louisiana than Arlington.

  87. d1島 September 16, 2009 1:33 pm

Are the Warriors using UNLV’s weight room?!?!?!

  88. d1島 September 16, 2009 1:34 pm

I guess the UA Heat Gear is getting put to good use.

  89. d1島 September 16, 2009 1:35 pm

Hopefully, the Rebels will be using the piano to sing a sad song come Sunday! 🙂

  90. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2009 1:37 pm

    d1:
No, the Warriors are using the Palo Verde weight room.
It’s really nice, for a high school program. But a bit cramped.
At least it’s close … well, unless you’re a coach who has to walk back.

  91. d1島 September 16, 2009 1:37 pm

    Hey!
“Fake Ferd” kinda reminds me of my parish priest!

Stephen- did you feel better after talking to Ralph on the big white phone?
    Hope you are fine now!!!

  95. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2009 1:42 pm

    There’s also a Fake Leila.
The Las Vegas newspaper has a videographer who sorta-sorta has the same fashion sense as Leila.
I texted Leila about that. She was curious. So, I told her: Don’t worry. You’re prettier.
Leila joins our coverage team tomorrow.

  97. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2009 1:44 pm

    Liz:
    Yep, thanks, I feel better.
And if it makes any UH fan happy, I did hurl at UNLV.

  98. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2009 1:44 pm

    d1:
Well, to get the picture, it was important to shoot from ahead, which meant riding in the car.

  99. Stephen Tsai September 16, 2009 1:46 pm

We did laundry yesterday. But a couple of items didn’t dry very well. So I brought them to practice, left them in the rental car, and an hour later, all dry. The power of the Vegas heat.

  106. JK September 16, 2009 1:57 pm

Is that Vaughn’s girlfriend?? Nice work my friend…….i know he one big buggah so that is all i going say about that. Sheeez!!!

As for the UNLV game. Being a former student at both schools i am a little torn but follow both teams. I think the oddsmakers have this game about right but i can see Hawaii pulling one out if they win the turnover battle. My prediciton though is that UNLV will control the passing attack of Hawaii with more QB pressure and force some turnovers which will result in a 31-24 victory.

  107. royvic September 16, 2009 2:01 pm

Yesterday I listened to BC’s morning radio talk show where he described Coach Mack as stomping down his foot at the beginning of practice. And he gave the players a tongue lashing.

“Whoa was the response from one of the area sport’s columnist,” as he was commenting in a interview on BC’s (1420) morning radio show. “I thought our high school coach was mean.”

Later I read where yesterday’s practice was very spirited. And today’s practice like wise was very spirited. Two good practices in a row, which saw the coach imploring and challenging his players on… and the results speak for themselves.

For Coach Mack I’m seeing a little Bobby Knight rubbing off on him as he sheds some of the Richard Simmon’s persona.

A little more Knight-isms and less pom pom waving has had an effect on the players. And it should continue this way for the better.

Taking a business-like approach to this weeks game with UNLV has seen Coach Mack implementing a lock down from players leaving the hotel premises, restricting players from testing their luck on the casino floors, having weight lifting sessions, tutoring and studying sessions and having mandatory curfews, which this guidance and dictatorship are helping leading the players into focusing on the game.

Coach Mack, by showing his sharp teeth at his players and stomping down his feet, has had a residual effect on the players. For I’ve even read ST article a few days ago how even the players, notably Estes, have been policing themselves in the beginning of practice stretching exercises.

“We have to focus this week”, Estes says in the HA interview. “There will be none of the chit chatting during stretching exercises.”

What we’re seeing is that the trickle down effect is working, where the players are taking on the newly found personification of the coach. And whereas the players are showing some grit, too, especially by their hard hitting on the field and how they are conducting themselves in practice.

In my mind there’s no doubt that Coach Mack showing his tough love and having that Saturday practice, less than 12 hours after the the Central Arkansas game, was a transforming moment for how the players perceive their coach.

g’evening tasikos. just finish reading all the posts from noon to now. re post way back, to take points or money line. the spread is still hawaii +7, o/u is 56 and the money line is hawaii +220 to +250 depending on the casino. heck i would go dollar-ten with the spread and dollar money line. or have some guebos and put it all on the money line. o/u i no like touch that one. Go warriors!!! Imua Na Koa!!!

  147. TYaiea September 16, 2009 6:13 pm

Good for you ST, u lucky bugga. re question about how much he won, looking at the top of machine looks like double-double bonus machine so 4 2s,3s,or 4s with an ace kicker is 400 points (400 times the denomination bet). Now if was 4aces with a 2,3 or 4 kicker is worth 800.

Bregman said the United States was also concerned about its companies employing Chinese coders, particularly in security.

He said the “software supply concern” was due to fears that Chinese developers would insert malicious code into software sold to American companies or the U.S. government. “If you’re a big company doing development in China the U.S. government asks, ‘Why should we trust you? We won’t buy from you.'”
