UCLA 3, Hawaii 1

Must be an import match. The Gov and UH Prez have shown up.

COMMENTS

  1. Brandon September 6, 2015 4:39 pm

UCLA matches almost always are over 7000. Attendance has been down lately, but the schedule hasn’t been great or any big time names, so I don’t blame them.

  2. Willie September 6, 2015 4:48 pm

Watching the pre game on OC16, showing the recently completed training room. Wow, impressive! What a difference from over 40 years ago. Looking forward to a great competitive match.

  3. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:01 pm

Hope Fridays match has over 8,000.

  4. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:04 pm

same starters las last night, including Granato in the back row.

  5. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:14 pm

After not having a hitting error in the last two matches, Manu-Olevao is blocked twice. Hard luck on the last one. rolled along the tape and landed in. UCLA up 10-5. TO UH.

  6. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:20 pm

UH looks awful, UCLA isn’t even playing that great.

  7. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:20 pm

    Higgins is struggling again.

  8. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:21 pm

Wahine just look Lackadaisical again 🙁

  9. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:21 pm

UCLA has pulled away at 18-11. UH hitting negative 077. Bruins with 5 blocks. TO Wahine

  10. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:23 pm

    7. Higgins was not struggling. passes very tight to the net. hitters had wide open looks hit wide.

  11. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:23 pm

Strategy is to force someone other than Nikki Taylor to get the kills. They have the D-set scouted well. Need to set the middles more–Magill has no attempts so far.

  12. Brandon September 6, 2015 5:23 pm

    Setting killing us this set.

  13. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:27 pm

This is the worst set I’ve seen this play in a long time.

  14. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:27 pm

UH has to have short-term memory and forget the first set ever happened. Move one.

  15. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:29 pm

    Bruins win 25-16.

  16. z September 6, 2015 5:29 pm

    Too easy.

  17. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:29 pm

Start Mitchem in the second. Hope Higgins steadies out she needs to be bettering balls out there now as a junior. They are letting Beuchler tool them too much too, She is a sub 100 hitter, she should not be this effective.

  18. Brandon September 6, 2015 5:29 pm

Higgins wasnt struggling? Come on now. There were at least bad sets that resulted in errors because there was nothing we could do with it.

  19. H-Man September 6, 2015 5:30 pm

UCLA just better all around. Great passing, digging everything.

  20. z September 6, 2015 5:32 pm

Our lefts all hitting negative. Sealy scouted well.

  21. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:32 pm

Start Mitchem when Maglio is hitting .400 and has three blocks? No, get more from Magill and hope Greeley improves as is her M.O.

  22. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:32 pm

    18. have to disagree. the passing dictated those sets and there wasn’t much that could be done with the ball. part of the reason Koelsch was in was because her height allows her better chance when it is tight.
Buechler hits .186 coming into this match. she’s at 286.

  23. WaWa September 6, 2015 5:32 pm

I thought Mitchem would go in to provide more offense in that first set, but I’m glad Kendra closed out the match and got her chance to set from the backrow.

  24. z September 6, 2015 5:33 pm

    Serving much better.

  25. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:33 pm

they have flopped the middles. Magill starting front row.

  26. z September 6, 2015 5:34 pm

    Bachi.

  27. z September 6, 2015 5:35 pm

    What a set by Tayler.

  28. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:36 pm

    UH up 7-2. TO UCLA

  29. Brandon September 6, 2015 5:37 pm

Passing was tight, but not nearly bad. Yes its a two part issue, but higgins played MUCH MUCH better last night.

she’s not playing AWFUL, but she is struggling.

  30. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:38 pm

ok good start this is more like wahine volleyball. Need Greeley to get going, Who knows what the heck that was in the first set.

  31. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:40 pm

good adjustment by UH to get better blocking matchups. 10-3 after Kahakai SE

  32. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:41 pm

They need to stop giving up such long runs.

  33. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:42 pm

    29. she did play better because the passing was better. let’s just agree to disagree

  34. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:44 pm

Right now, all the outsides are hitting negative (Granato is at .000). That’s where the most improvement needs to be.

  35. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:45 pm

Darn we got the bad TMO today. Was hoping she would play like yesterday.

  36. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:46 pm

Team captains just need to play better in the bigger matches, come on wahine.

  37. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:46 pm

NV violations by Higgins on the dump. instead of 14-10 it’s 13-11. TO UH

  38. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:46 pm

That’s what happens when you are scouted so well. UCLA is digging the balls that Nikki was putting down last night.

  39. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:48 pm

Mark my words…if UCLA comes back to win this set, they will win the match. Critical IMO for UH to even the match.

  40. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:48 pm

I think UCLA just has really good backrow defenders.
Whats disappointing is UH’s defense, they are making players like Buechler and lawless have good offensive nights much better than they average.

  41. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 5:52 pm

    UH is self-destructing.

  42. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:52 pm

Greeley is just not getting it done, Im afraid I bachi’d her. think Shoji needs to give Huff or Castillo a shot if Greeley and TMO continue to struggle.

  43. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:52 pm

Granato aced. UCLA closes to 18-17. TO UH. Wahine had an 18-14 lead. UCLA defense has saved a lot of balls that looked to be unplayable. they have made more off plays.

  44. Maverick September 6, 2015 5:52 pm

No, what’s disappointing is the play of UH’s outsides. Two at .000 and two hitting negative.

  45. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:53 pm

Finally Greely, hope this gets her going.

  46. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 5:54 pm

    42. Don’t know what the solution is but Dave has to do something. Nikki is a formidable first option but she can’t carry the team alone. Tai lacks the height and consistency and Kalei lacks the power to consistently beat a well-prepared opponent with good blockers.

  47. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:54 pm

    I hate these refs.

  48. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:54 pm

finally TMO hope that gets her going.

  49. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 5:55 pm

it is amazing how many bad calls the linesmen make. UH overcomes a poor touch call and it’s 21-18. TO UCLA

  50. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:56 pm

    46. I think if they continue to struggle you have to use your bench, who knows Huff might have a breakout match.

  51. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:58 pm

Nikki tries way too hard sometimes, she doesn’t have to hit such extreme angles, just get it in.

  52. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:59 pm

that was huge by Tai, she should overpower Muno everytime.

  53. warriorfan September 6, 2015 5:59 pm

please stop setting Nikki on the left, it is not effective.

  54. H-Man September 6, 2015 6:01 pm

Wahine leading, but their passing needs to get better. High sets allowing the Bruins to get their blockers in place.

  55. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:01 pm

    Wow they almost choked there.

  56. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:03 pm

Greeley, Nikki and TMO struggled but came through when it counted the most. They must pick up their games, and clean the passing.

  57. Brandon September 6, 2015 6:03 pm

    Refs are AWFUL tonight.

Just plain biased towards UCLA it looks like

  58. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:03 pm

Love how the fans yell when the ref misses the lift. Taylor with her 5th kill, UH wins 27-25 on their 3rd set point.

  59. surfboy September 6, 2015 6:04 pm

Is it me or does refereee E.H. always having a hard time up there? Its time we get some new blood refing these games!

  60. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:05 pm

Good win after losing a big lead and facing the loss of the set. I sum up the match so far: not enough from the middles, poor hitting percentage from the outsides. UCLA with the significant edge in digs at this point.

  61. Don September 6, 2015 6:05 pm

We yell because we see how badly the set are. Ernie should be R2 tonight…

  62. surfboy September 6, 2015 6:06 pm

Denise Hanson seems to be the most cosistently good ref in Hawaii….she can stay! Lol

  63. WaWa September 6, 2015 6:06 pm

Was it against UCLA last year when Tai jump served out of bounds for both 1st & 2nd set game points and then rotated back to serve when we were down match point and Ana Ponce subbed in to serve? The look on her face was priceless

  64. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 6:08 pm

    58. Not just at the arena. I’m watching at home and when the ref missed that obvious lift I jumped off my couch and yelled. LOL.

  65. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:10 pm

    63. Great memory. I just checked and you are correct.

  66. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:12 pm

Starting middles are hitting .615 combined with 13 total swings out of team total of 77 (only 17% of the attempts). Need to get them more involved the next two sets.

  67. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:13 pm

theres been lots of missets on Muno that should have been called at least 3. one on Higgins to though.

  68. WaWa September 6, 2015 6:14 pm

    65. I just remember jokingly telling whoever it was that I was watching the game with, “WATCH, its gonna be Tai going back to serve!” and we just cracked up at the chances.

  69. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:17 pm

    hopefully Nikki is coming alive.

  70. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:20 pm

Greeley is true to form. Very slow starter offensively, but picks it up later in the match. Having a good set 3 so far. BTW, UCLA sure has a lot of weird passing errors.

  71. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:22 pm

    Ugly match from both sides.

  72. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:22 pm

Man we really need Higgins to get more steady, her sets are all over the place.
And Greeley is really struggling. ugh.

  73. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:23 pm

Miscommunication on the serve between Greeley and Granato. Hawaii was up 8=5. UCLA up 9-8. TO Wahine.

If you don’t trust your memory, you can always got to the UH archives and click on the box from last year and go to play-by-play

  74. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:24 pm

Seriously, Taylor/TMO are really struggling. Greeley has the highest hitting percentage of all the outsides.

  75. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 6:25 pm

Looks like we took it up a notch and UCLA responded by taking it up two notches. Maglio had had two consecutive hitting errors, now Mitchem is in.

  76. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:27 pm

Jeez the last ten points have just been sloppy for the wahine, come on they need to win this.

  77. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:32 pm

It must be pony tail appreciation day.

  78. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:33 pm

This is ugly on both sides. Hawaii will be kicking themselves if they lose this.

  79. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:33 pm

Story of the match: D-set has been neutralized.

  80. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:34 pm

UCLA able to string points. it’s 23-16. TO UH.

  81. WaWa September 6, 2015 6:35 pm

I’m surprised Mitchem didn’t replace Maglio entirely after the first set.

  82. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 6:36 pm

Higgins continues to pass up opportunities to set the middle. I just don’t get it. And Tai misses long. SMH.

  83. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:36 pm

Even the steady Anderson makes a bad errors, Ugh. just one of those days.

  84. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:37 pm

    81. See comment 21.

  85. z September 6, 2015 6:37 pm

    Very poor passing.

  86. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:38 pm

    83. it looked like it was in from our vantage point but

    UCLA wins 25-17.

  87. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:39 pm

    Huff in on the left.

  88. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:42 pm

    Passing is just horrendous.

  89. WaWa September 6, 2015 6:43 pm

We are in all sorts of trouble now that Taylor is in the rotation as a passing OH! What the heck.

  90. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:44 pm

UCLA out to a 6-2 lead. Seems to be some confusion with the new lineup.

  91. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:44 pm

How about putting in some Defensive specialists. UCLA is basically winning with superior defensive play by their backrow subs and libero and smarter hitting.

  92. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:45 pm

    89. totally agree.

  93. WaWa September 6, 2015 6:45 pm

This is a horrible line-up tweak at the WORST of times.

  94. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:48 pm

This is gonna be a bad loss if they dont come back. UCLA is middle of the pack pac 12 IMO.

  95. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:48 pm

can you say bad rotation. Huff being shaded out of passing. was not a good lineup.

  96. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:49 pm

I have no idea why the middles are being ignored.

  97. Brandon September 6, 2015 6:49 pm

Higgins still setting badly. I mean, did you see that set to Nikki in the back?

  98. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:50 pm

Magill is 7-0-9. but they can’t get her the ball.

  99. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:51 pm

    98. I meant in this set, not the entire match.

  100. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:52 pm

It’s so much easier when you serve tough.

  101. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:53 pm

Huff and Magill with the block. UH has pulled to 14-8. TO UCLA. Still a bit of a shaky lineup out there for Hawaii

  102. Maverick September 6, 2015 6:54 pm

You can’t say height determined this match. UH out blocking UCLA. Defense appears to be the big difference–UCLA with 12 more.

  103. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:55 pm

You see, you serve tough, UCLA becomes easy to block.

  104. z September 6, 2015 6:55 pm

When the pass is there the middle attack is there.

  105. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:55 pm

    lord these refs are bad

  106. warriorfan September 6, 2015 6:57 pm

they come back, then completely break down, frustrating, WHy did it take so long for Shoji to call the time out>?

  107. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 6:58 pm

Hawaii had closed to 14-13. UCLA on another run, lead 18-13. TO UH

  108. z September 6, 2015 6:58 pm

UCLA a lot better in the back row.

  109. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:01 pm

Do not understand why Higgins won’t set Mitchem.

  110. z September 6, 2015 7:02 pm

Nice cover by Kalei. She missed it the last time.

  111. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:03 pm

Dont give up, UH can steal this.

  112. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:04 pm

I think Kendra should have dumped that. Beauchler is just tooling the wahine block like crazy.

  113. Maverick September 6, 2015 7:04 pm

    game over dude

  114. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:05 pm

Darn it, just not as crisp as they need to be.

  115. z September 6, 2015 7:07 pm

    Linsman missed it.

  116. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 7:07 pm

Taylor gets the touch. UCLA thought they had won. they rush the court only to be told no. TO UCLA at 24-22

  117. z September 6, 2015 7:09 pm

    Tayler serving smart.

  118. z September 6, 2015 7:11 pm

If only Magill had the slide.

  119. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 7:12 pm

well they made it interesting. UCLA wins 28-26.

  120. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:13 pm

Greeley just did not come through, Really question keeping Nikki in the backcourt, should have put in a DS if they had subs left.

  121. Maverick September 6, 2015 7:13 pm

Poor match by UH. Breakout by Huff.

  122. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:14 pm

Just really disappointing, This was must win for post season hosting chances which are probably done.

  123. WaWa September 6, 2015 7:14 pm

I don’t ever wanna see that lineup again. Nikki Taylor is no better of a primary passer than Tai Manu-Olevao. Every serve was targeted at her. Setting decisions by Higgs at the end was questionable.

  124. Brandon September 6, 2015 7:14 pm

Higgins really killed us this match. Don’t care how many people deny it. Yes passing wasnt bad, but her setting was worse.

  125. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:15 pm

Huff should have been playing much more from the get go. She has a ton of potential.

  126. Kazu September 6, 2015 7:15 pm

Good match but not yet ready for the big guys.

  127. H-Man September 6, 2015 7:15 pm

The Bruins were waiting with two blockers for the last two sets to Greeley.

  128. Big Island VB fan September 6, 2015 7:16 pm

A close loss on the fourth set. As you said Cindy, one loss beyond that to Florida next week (barring a miraculous upset), Hawaii will not host the first two rounds of the playoffs. Right?

  129. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:16 pm

That is a good lineup and it got them back, but need to put in a DS, it’s not worth keeping a big gun for backrow attack if the passing will pay for it and now allow UH to use its middles. Ugh still annoyed that UCLA somehow saved that serve at UH set point.

  130. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:19 pm

    124. I hope no senior bias and Iosia wins out the setting position next year, It will be the best thing for the program IMO. But I fully expect Tayler H to get playing time still for her serve. But anyway thats for the future. this loss stings.

  131. WaWa September 6, 2015 7:20 pm

    129. That would be the only way to make that lineup work, if Nikki Taylor gets DSed out in the back. It would also hurt because when Huff rotates back and get DSed out then our front row hitters have to be able to terminate against that block which they (Greeley) was not able to do down the stretch.

  132. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:24 pm

Greeley just did not play up to her standards today. She didn’t hit smart her passing was shakier. Same with Nikki although her serving was fantastic. We need these two to come through against florida.
Bruins defense just far superior but Shoji doesn’t use his backrow subs like Sealy does.

  133. z September 6, 2015 7:26 pm

According to Lisa, Sealy said that defense win games and that is what I saw tonight. They also were prepared with their blocks. A plus tonight is Megan. She showed that she could terminate tonight. And that is what we need. Not to mention the slide.

  134. Pot of Gold September 6, 2015 7:28 pm

Some good volleyball from UCLA, they forced Higgins and Shoji to adjust from counting on Taylor to carry the team. This will be good long term for the Bow’s.

Huff looked like a nice adjustment, I expect that may happen earlier next time the OH struggle. Nice to see Higgins understand the importance of the game and turn down her serving game to keep the ball in. Almost the incredible comeback, good volleyball by the entire team to push the 4th set to a two point he.

  135. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 7:28 pm

Defense did win it. UCLA with 73 digs to Hawaii’s 58. But to their credit, nice rally in Set 4 after being down 24-20.
as for the comment way back up. I don’t think the refs are biased towards anyone. they are just poor.

  136. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 7:30 pm

Taylor and Greeley on the all-tournament team.

  137. Big Island VB fan September 6, 2015 7:32 pm

    135. Who made it on the UCLA team and who was the tournament MVP?

  138. Maverick September 6, 2015 7:34 pm

UH’s only possibility for hosting is by running the table. Beating Florida is a must–UH needs a victory over a top-25 team (not clear LBSU will make the top 25 this year) to convince the seeding committee that it deserves to host in the first round. Beating Florida and then losing another match will take them out of hosting, IMO. The schedule is just too weak.

Two years ago, UH was seeded 11th despite an RPI ranking of around 16. The main reason was going 5-2 against the top 50 (if I recall correctly), including a win over top ranked Texas, and despite a couple of in-conference losses. No chance that UH will have anything like that resume this year.

  139. WaWa September 6, 2015 7:34 pm

I would’ve like to see a reverse flow to Huff in ANY of those last sets that went to Greeley. Our setters are not known to be flashy, but geez 3 or 4 swings from the left in a row.

Luckily, hopefully, the voters in the AVCA Poll are sleeping already and I know it has no weight when determining seeding for the NCAA tourney. I just hate to see us so low lol.

  140. Brandon September 6, 2015 7:36 pm

I actually believe the poll is a small factor in seeding this year.

  141. Kryon September 6, 2015 7:36 pm

Warriorfan, I agree. Set mitchem! Jus feed the beast! Even magil gets set a small amount. I rather see them set a lot then greely. Greely just can’t get it down.

  142. Big Island VB fan September 6, 2015 7:36 pm

    138. Thanks for your feedback. So a loss to Florida shuts the door on hosting post-season.

  143. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 7:38 pm

Tough loss tonight. The poor officiating hurt but that didn’t decide the match. Despite all the weapons UH has it’s apparent the team is having trouble putting the pieces together on offense. Nikki is a formidable first option but a second dominating outside hitter has yet to emerge which IMHO is essential to compete at the elite level. Tai lacks the height and consistency and Kalei lacks the power to consistently bury the ball against a well-prepared opponent with decent size and a good back row. I don’t know what the answer is but it looks to me like Dave needs to further shuffle the deck.

  144. Maverick September 6, 2015 7:41 pm

    141. It is my strong belief based on what has happened in the past. The seeding committee not only wants teams to play top-25/top-50 competition, they want teams to win those matches. Florida is the only remaining team on the schedule (again with the exception of LBSU possibly making the top 25 later this season) that has the cache and ranking to convince the committee that UH deserves to host.
But this is a big IF. Even if UH were to beat Florida and run the table, UH’s weak schedule may deter the committee from seeding UH.

  145. WaWa September 6, 2015 7:43 pm

    140. Thanks, yeah I know I read that was in the talks, but what they say and what they will actually do, I would’t be surprised if we get the short end of the stick either way. Hopefully we can clean up our act, beat Florida and everyone else on our schedule and make a good case for hosting the sub.

  146. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:47 pm

Hope they go 3-0 next tournament but hitting efficiency, defense/passing and setting all need to be cleaned up. The only good thing tonight was the serving by Higgins and Taylor and Huff and Magill’s hitting.

  147. Maverick September 6, 2015 7:48 pm

    144. I don’t think UH will get the short end of the stick this year. The schedule is too weak–and the Big West is a poor volleyball conference when compared to the Power 5. See 138 above when UH got the long end of the stick (even then, the team lost in the second round).

  148. warriorfan September 6, 2015 7:51 pm

Playing Bakersfield/riverside twice will kill our rpi. Our only hope is that UCLA goes on to have a better than expected season and ends up 2nd or 3rd in the pac 12 and UH goes undefeated the rest of the way , which is unlikely.

  149. Chris September 6, 2015 7:57 pm

Can we chat again about why Higgins never set Mitchem? She does not understand the flow of a volleyball match and understand the importance of middle hitters. I’m sure in her past Punahou life she could get away with setting Carly Kan every ball- but we’ve seen this for the last two years and she hasn’t figured it out yet. Extremely frustrating to see a setter make such god awful choices. Why have 6’4 and 6’5 middle hitters if you don’t know how to locate them and create something for them to hit? The passing was bad, but still, good setters would have found a way to get their middles involved- wasn’t that a preseason strength of Hawaii?

  150. WaWa September 6, 2015 8:02 pm

Cindy, your blog is so much more pleasant to read than in seasons past. I remember looking and seeing certain posters or just noticing their styles and just not even bothering to read any of their posts and even avoided your blog at times in disgust. So much more knowledge flowing than trash-talking.

  151. surfboy September 6, 2015 8:13 pm

Tonight proved as steady of an OH Greeley is, she is not the OH1 Hawaii needs. We do need an OH that can compliment Taylor. I dont know what Shoji is going to do but we need floor defense and to be steady on serve recieve. Taylor is not much better than Olevao in the back court-a DS should have been there in her place. Higgins made some poor decisions in her setting choices but in this case the passing didnt give her many opportunities. MY ANSWER is Shoji needs to shuffle this lineup and by that I mean giving some valuable playing time to Megan Huff but I still think the true answer for this team is ANNIE MITCHEM to the outside! She can provide that firepower Hawaii needs from a left side attacker.
    MY THOUGHTS:
-Mitchem needs to be looked as an Outside Hitter
-The SLIDE to the middles or atleast from one of them needs to be utilized
-As much as I like Huff, Taylor is best kept on the rightside

  152. AlexM September 6, 2015 8:14 pm

This loss was not totally a surprise when you compare the common opponents both teams faced this week. One positive may be that Dave is forced to make some bold lineup/strategy changes that he normally would be hesitant to do. Really shake things up.
I think Huff needs to get more playing time. Tai and Granato struggle against big teams like UCLA. She may be raw now, but we’ll need her in the post season when we play the big teams. Same goes for Mitchem.

  153. WaWa September 6, 2015 8:22 pm

    149. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I agree that Mitchem should be looked at on the left, however I gave up on that since the middle position has no depth.

I think our best bet is to move Mitchem to M1 to utilize the slide and move Magill to M2. This would spread our offense out more easily & hopefully provide our hitters with one-on-ones.

  154. tongo September 6, 2015 8:29 pm

IMHO, UH was extremely well scouted and you have to give Sealy kudos for developing and executing a highly successful plan that neutralized both Nikki and Olivia. We see it football all the time. Dave will need to make adjustments – just like Mike Sealy did last week when UCLA got totally embarrassed in a sweep by (tiny ) LMU. No need to go ballistic. This is just pre-season! Team is still jelling and positions are still in flux. The girls have a short turn around before playing Florida. Let’s uplift and support the team. Let’s look forward. We need to beat Florida.

  155. LanaiBoy September 6, 2015 8:31 pm

Granato comes in for serving and back row defense. However, she is making far too many service errors and serve receive errors. That’s why Castillo has been coming in but Castillos’ serve is average and she does not seem to have much range on defense. Just hope she can come out of her funk; she has an effective serve, better than any of the other DS’s and more than an adequate defender and passer. One of the more unfortunate results of having the best team play on Sunday is the increased opportunity for scouting. UCLA was often in extremely good positions for blocking and defense. Obviously, the passing was not good enough to set the middles more. Magill and Mitchem needed a lots more swings than what they actually got.

  156. WaWa September 6, 2015 8:36 pm

    153. I would’ve hoped that Mitchem would’ve have been ready enough in the coaches’ eyes to have started this match, but when she was in Higgins almost NEVER went to her on the slide. Maglio has paid her dues and had her fair chances, but she cannot terminate anywhere near what Mitchem is capable of. To me, it is a fail that she wasn’t given more of an opportunity to gain experience to be ready to start for this match.

  157. PBnJz September 6, 2015 8:36 pm

    Bummer…
I haven’t seen anything from Mitchem that would convince me she’s some secret weapon others think she is…BUT granted it does require Higgins to get her involved in the offense…and that is a battle for all of our middles and especially when the passing is sketchy as it was tonite. Sadly I don’t have any faith in TMO. 2.5 yrs as a starter and she’s no more consistent than the frosh in her 2d career start (McKG).
It was a big match and some of our most reliable (Claire and Model G, even Nikki) faltered tonight. They showed some grit in battling back…just need some more! I think they can grow from this and use it to improve. It’s a little selfish on our part as fans to want them to host…yes it could be beneficial to have home-crowd advantage, but I’d almost prefer they stick it to some other team on their home court, like the did to Nebraska a “few” years ago! Champions prevail no matter what! And in my heart, out Wahine are champions–no matter what!

  158. Maverick September 6, 2015 8:42 pm

    147. Bakersfield is a really dubious scheduling choice (1-6 record with a victory over that vaunted Alabama State squad–and on the fast track to 1-9 after next weekend before meeting UH). That team will nullify the RPI gains from playing Florida and one other UH opponent with an excellent overall record. If you want to play two matches to prevent rust, why not consider an away series with a better team? If making money from two additional home games is important, better to schedule BYU-Hawaii. I understand non-Div I opponents are not factored into Div I RPI calculations.

  159. Gsky September 6, 2015 8:51 pm

This was just one of those matches where too many players were having off nights. To bad it had to be against one of the few ranked teams we’ll see. You could see that UCLA was NOT more talented, they just made less mistakes. Annie still looks a little lost at times and I hope the competition and teammate chemistry between her and Maglio aren’t straining things. I keep thinking of what Nikki said when she first joined the wahine and wasn’t welcomed with open arms. Human nature I guess. You can’t throw all those girls together and not expect some friction. Anyway, they need to strengthen the left some how. Great to finally see the Huff we have been hearing about in practice. Granato has become one of my favorite players to watch. Such composure already. Any Kahakai has been outstanding last couple matches. Go Wahine!

  160. H-Man September 6, 2015 8:55 pm

Until tonight, Greeley was really good on the left OH1. I don’t know if replacing her with Annie Mitchem will make any difference. I think it was more of UCLA being a lot better than the Wahine in their passing, digging and setting.

  161. surfboy September 6, 2015 9:00 pm

    151. I agree with you too and thats what makes it hard for Mitchem to be looked as an Outside but I think its overall best for the team if she is on the outside. I say give Castillo some looks at Middle she isnot new to that position and may excel there. Afterall im thinking as far as depth go, Castillo is behind Greeley,TMO,Granato, and Huff on the outside

  162. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 9:15 pm

    sorry, been writing.
    all-tourney team Anderson (MOP)
UCLA’s Buechler. Keala and Brobst Iowa. Cappellino, American
    Taylor Greeley UH

  163. warriorfan September 6, 2015 9:17 pm

It hurt that Greely and Taylor both had their worst matches of the season, If one of them was their usual self UH could have pulled off a win.
I hope that they try to get Scott Wong’s team to come over next year, instead of Bakersfield, I knew they would be bad, but they are even worst than I thought.

  164. CC September 6, 2015 9:19 pm

Na Wahine middle attack is one dimensional at the present. Opponents’ middle blockers need not worry about defending the step out. They need to diversify that middle attack. Left OH1 position is vulnerable as well. Lots to to take away from match and to work on.

  165. Big Island VB fan September 6, 2015 9:22 pm

    155. It was only a matter of curiosity with me whether or not the Wahines can host the first and second round playoffs. After all, I live on the Big Island and it’s hard to plan a trip just a week in advance to watch them host in person. I would have to plan months in advance, and this way knowing in advance that they won’t host would save me a trip for nothing. It would have to be a very good team for me to gamble a trip like this. It’s not like I am trying to put on them pressure – like better be good or you won’t host. If I am being selfish, it’s only a matter of sparing a trip for nothing. It’s hard to make any affordable reservations a week in advance. So now I know that I am staying home and will be content to watch the playoffs online wherever they go and if they make it at all.

  166. bleachercoach September 6, 2015 9:23 pm

The match exposed our weaknesses that we were able to get by with the unranked opponents. Somehow Megan Huff got to play opposite Nikki (why only now)and IMO that is the final answer…Enough testing with the Tai/Granato duel. We need that tall hitter/blocker if we want to go far if we get to postseason. The percentage at the net fares much better with Nikki, Huff, Greeley,( O/H ) Magill,Maglio, or Mitchem is still very interesting. All 3 middles have not really stood out (non consistent) but Mitchem if and when she gets comfortable moving around and playing to the speed of this level will be the “Go To Middle” (IMO). Anderson provides spark as a D/S and she moves around the ball very well. I still think we need Koelsch in there earlier than at 20pts…She affects the opposition more due to her height…When Greeley and Taylor makeSwift service, digging or hitting errors I am not as concerned due to there more steadiness game in and game out…The backcourt and at the net the movements appears slow reaction wise and predictable…We need to have a “Step -Out” arsenal offensively…This is the 1st year in many to remember that non of our starters are doing it…Only Mitchem does it when she comes in…Anyways this crossword puzzle can be solved once it is figured out. Lastly, Castillo can play backrow, got a nice armswing, and brings height up front…She is a player!..She is very similar to Greeley in every sense… Another good one..Excited to see how much we improve in 4 days…We will be very good going into regular season!! Again this is just my observation, but at the end I cherish and enjoy every wahine on our team….I look forward to volleyball season every year….I am a die hard fan

  167. Cindy Luis September 6, 2015 9:27 pm

sorry but think you’re reading way too much into what Taylor said. She was a freshman coming into a very veteran team.
These players have been on teams all their lives. They’re used to competing for their spots. I’ve seen no friction because of it.

  168. HawaiiMongoose September 6, 2015 9:47 pm

    164. Interesting. Like a lot of others I’ve been thinking that Mitchem should get a look at OH, but a lineup of Taylor, Greeley and Huff may be the solution.

  169. JJ September 6, 2015 9:49 pm

LOL, Steve/Laura is in fine form over on VT.

  170. warriorfan September 6, 2015 10:04 pm

Ok after some thought. I think We need Nikki to move to the left,, her defense is good enough and she can hit from the left and right I was worried at first about her hitting from there but she had some great swings in set 4, her passing needs to improve though.
Start Huff on the right, her potential is Huge and will payoff in the long run but have Granato play backrow for her. Greeley at OH2 and Mitchem and Magill in the middle. I think this would be the best option to advance further in the NCAA tourney at season’s ends. With TMO and Maglio ready to come off the bench and inject energy.

  171. Hot September 6, 2015 10:23 pm

Can Anderson, Ponce and Guinasso pass? I mean, instead of using Taylor as a passer when she rotates to the back row, why not sub in one of these three?

  172. Gsky September 6, 2015 11:12 pm

Sorry, but it’s a little naive to think just because they’ve competed before, there’s no possibility of conflicting personalities, no likelihood of friction, and everything will be sprinkled with pixie dust and love. We all have drama in our lives and I’m sure these girls didn’t get a free pass. In the end, I was just trying to say that I hope there isn’t a lot of it, because there is a ton of potential there and I’m just a fan that wants to see it happen. And I’m betting it will with Shoji at the wheel.

  173. blunite September 6, 2015 11:19 pm

Passing, digging, and hitting percentage/setting, deja vu from last year.

  174. OrbitalRipZ September 7, 2015 3:21 am

Back to the drawing board so soon?

As they say, better now than too late. Going back to the drawing board helped UCLA, as Sealy dropped his more experienced setter for a frosh! If ever there was a time for Shoji to put his experience of 41 years at the helm to work, now is the time.

  175. A View From Afar September 7, 2015 4:13 am

So, six games into the new season it sounds like these are the problems (among others) facing Na Wahine:

    – Poor service receive.
    – Poor passing.
    – Poor setting.
    – One dimensional offense (see next three)
    – Failure to set the middles regularly.
    – Over-reliance on a single primary OH (Nikki Taylor in this case).
    – No reliable left side OH.
    – Inconsistent play from highly experienced senior co-captain (TMO) of whom (fairly or unfairly) great things (e.g. leadership) is expected.
    – Failure of coaching staff to make timely in-game adjustments.

If memory serves me correctly, these are many of the same problems that existed at the END of LAST season. Are we still going to be talking about these same problems at the END of THIS season? Here is where the coaching staff will need to show what they’ve got. There is lots of talent on this year’s team. There are lots of veteran players who have had ample playing time along with a few promising additions. One early game should not define a season, but at home against a UCLA team who is also early in their season as well, Na Wahine did not perform well. The team and coaches have the rest of the season to work on whatever problems that led to this result so that at the END of this season we aren’t talking about the same problems we are talking about NOW.

  176. warriorfan September 7, 2015 4:28 am

Ok after thinking about it, the loss is not so bad, UH almost came back from the dead and took it to five which shows never give up attitude and toughness. There have been serious weaknesses exposed but now they have time to work on them and they might have discovered a new weapon in Huff.

  177. Lei September 7, 2015 4:28 am

Taylor should stay on the right side.. Megan should play left with Greely.. Taylor should come out backrow.. Earlier on the 1st or 2nd set she was not able to pickup the tips.. I just think some praise Taylor too much… The past two games we talk about the passing is off but the only way for Taylor to get kills is a pass and the set. When the pass is on the money she at times hits it out then we make up an excuse of why she hit it out… Remember it’s 6 people on that court not one…we just need to be true fans and just support a win or a lost.. What is preseason for? Yes, to prepare and learn and get better… We can all say if they did that or bring in her we would have won!!! It’s amazing how quick we point fingers…Just my thoughts..

  178. warriorfan September 7, 2015 4:31 am

I found a tweet by a 6′ 2 sophomore from Alabama named Kaden Edenfield and it says she wants to play for the rainbow wahine and is obsessed, Looks like she has major hops. http://s3.amazonaws.com/vnn-aws-sites/7911/files/2015/06/Edenfield.2014.jpg

I hope Jeff Hall takes notice.

  179. menehune September 7, 2015 4:42 am

That first set was painful to watch, but in the overall scheme of things, watching the Wahine fight tooth and nail to pull out the second set and almost the fourth set
bodes well for the future. Give the Bruins credit, their back row defense is what did us in. They were chasing down and digging balls all night that looked looked like it was a sure point for the Wahine. Agree with most of the suggestions that Huff and Mitchem should get more playing time and Taylor should be subbed out but only AFTER she serves. Tough loss but proud of the Wahine for showing their grit.
    GO BOWS.

  180. haleiwacrossfitter September 7, 2015 7:46 am

Towards the end of game 4, all the sets kept going to Greeley. Even on the passes that were good enough to set the middles. Annie was going up for the slide and not getting set. Why is Annie not getting set? She needs the reps…period! She won’t get better if not given the reps.

Same with Huff. She needs playing time and sets to get better. I really do think these 2 need to be on the court.

Even though there are only 3 Middle Hitters, they can still try Mitchem on the pins and see how she does out there. If an injury happens, God forbid, they can just put her back in the middle or throw Castillo in the middle. They have options, it is just not being utilized.

I’m kind of rambling…but to conclude, Huff and Mitchem need to be on the court more and get playing time AND SETS!!!! to get better.

  181. kimo browner September 7, 2015 8:23 am

Start Koelsch and reinvent the back row. Anderson and baby G are better than any of the rotating starters. Play Huff and start Mitchem. She has more skills and range than either Maglio or Magill. Shoji needs to shake it up bc it aint working. Higgins will not take us to the promised land. Period.

  182. Ron September 7, 2015 8:44 am

This lose was not the end of the world. UCLA is good but I would bet on us in a re-match. We have better personnel, we just need to get the right people in the right positions. I do think that we now need to beat Florida if we want to be in the conversation as a national contender. This lose was a team lose and no one individual should be blamed. The plus was seeing what Huff can do.

  183. Ron September 7, 2015 8:47 am

In spite of what I just said a large part of me agrees with Kimo

    Good Morning,

    http://www.avca.org/divisions/division-one-women/poll-9-7-2015/

Hawaii moved up one spot to #16 in the AVCA Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Poll just ahead of #17 UCLA! Also, Hawaii will have an opportunity at a resume-building win as they face #2 Florida on Friday Night! Hope that the SSC is sold out and good luck Rainbow Wahine VB!
