  1. wildcard August 30, 2015 4:59 pm

na wahine needs to show their shock troops tonight.

  2. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:10 pm

Never ceases to amaze me how Hawaii gets homered at home. Obvious net violation on OSU not called, you could hear the touch on Taylor’s attack and it wasn’t called. Shoji doesn’t get up often to complain but he was up on two consecutive plays.

  3. warriorfan August 30, 2015 5:14 pm

I don’t understand why coach doesn’t use a backrow sub for Olevao.

  4. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:14 pm

UH was up 9-4, now 9-8. TO UH. serve-receive breaking down. Manu-Olevao and Kahakai with overpasses. Higgins as a back-row player cannot block it and her attempt to save-set went over which was an illegal back-row attack.

  5. m August 30, 2015 5:15 pm

Olivia said it last night. PAC 12 teams serve tough and that UH would have to pass better. UHs passing problems really hurt them last night and they are struggling right now.

  6. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:16 pm

    Granato in for Manu-Olevao

  7. HawaiiMongoose August 30, 2015 5:20 pm

    2. I thought we did get the benefit of the doubt on the OSU hit to the back line that was called out.

Nice to see Magill on fire and very solid blocking up front, but our passing needs to settle down.

  8. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:22 pm

Duck and cover. Taylor takes out Driscoll. It’s 18-15. TO OSU

  9. Maverick August 30, 2015 5:25 pm

Nikki Taylor with 12 attempts already, on pace to match last night’s workout. UH really needs to diversify. She will wear out.

  10. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:26 pm

misset to OSU outside, Magill and Taylor pretty intimidating out there. it’s 21-16. TO OSU

  11. z August 30, 2015 5:27 pm

    Oweee!

  12. warriorfan August 30, 2015 5:31 pm

Granato needs to be playing backrow at all times for TMO.

  13. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:32 pm

Manu-Olevao puts it down on UH’s third set point. 25-20

  14. z August 30, 2015 5:32 pm

    Way to go Tai.

  15. warriorfan August 30, 2015 5:35 pm

Olivia is getting better and better.

  16. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:36 pm

Mitchem and Granato both in for Set 2

  17. warriorfan August 30, 2015 5:38 pm

I like Annie playing. great move.

  18. warriorfan August 30, 2015 5:41 pm

Yes, great to see Gianna get playing time.

  19. z August 30, 2015 5:42 pm

    Nikki giving up the body.

  20. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:42 pm

Hawaii with 7.5 blocks already. it’s 10-6. TO OSU

  21. Kazu August 30, 2015 5:46 pm

    How about baby G ?

  22. warriorfan August 30, 2015 5:48 pm

Granato I think is earning herself top DS position. She’s got a great serve and Higgins is playing her best match so far.

  23. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:48 pm

amazing cut angle shot by Taylor inside the 10-foot line followed by a net-roll ace by Granato 15-9 TO OSU

  24. Maverick August 30, 2015 5:49 pm

Big difference between tonight and last night: fewer service errors (2) and only one receipt error.

  25. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:50 pm

Think Granto more than a DS. She can also attack from the back row. so a good sub for Manu-Olevao.

  26. Brandon August 30, 2015 5:50 pm

Would like to See Castillo come in if she isn’t redshirting. Or granato play front row

  27. H-Man August 30, 2015 5:51 pm

Guinasso played well in the back row for one rotation. Glad Dave is mixing it up a bit today.

  28. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:51 pm

    14. early to talk about Serving. Hawaii has cleaned up the serve-receive, after a few overpasses early

  29. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:53 pm

Shoji said he would try to get Guinasso and Ponce in. Mitchem did do a step-out. dug. UH up 19-14

  30. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 5:57 pm

OSU with two straight aces, one off of Greeley, the other to the side of Greeley. it’s 22-19. TO UH

  31. jkjones August 30, 2015 5:58 pm

Baby G looked good. subs in the back row are working w granato, anderson and guiinasso. what depth. Like coach shoji subing. mitchem needs more reps. she is one step above maglio.

  32. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 6:00 pm

    UH wins 25-19.

  33. jkjones August 30, 2015 6:02 pm

please. we dont need granato in the front row. she is good where she plays. shoji can let others play w more height. we have the depth. play them.

  34. wildcard August 30, 2015 6:04 pm

one more set. lets go bows!

  35. warriorfan August 30, 2015 6:12 pm

Having Tai not worry about digging and passing might help her offense.

  36. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 6:19 pm

    33. did anyone say Granato was going tp be in the front row?
UH up 11-4. TO OSU. Beavs subbed in a new setter. Don’t think she has the mobility .

  37. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 6:21 pm

Greeley with an ace. 14-5. TO OSU

  38. H-Man August 30, 2015 6:27 pm

    Everyone in except Megan Huff.

  39. z August 30, 2015 6:28 pm

    Tai is feeling it.

  40. Maverick August 30, 2015 6:33 pm

Tai had a good night. Great to see her do well with fewer responsibilities. I really like how Castillo plays–her passing was great.

  41. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 6:33 pm

Everyone got it. UH wins 25-11. Not really that close

  42. Maverick August 30, 2015 6:34 pm

After watching these matches, Wichita State is the real deal. Second best team of the weekend.

  43. 10:E August 30, 2015 6:34 pm

WOW! Great job ladies. Glad to see Coach put in so many players to have so much playing time! Great to se Tai shake off last nights performance! Glad to see Huff in the last couple of plays towards the end of game 3. I thought Oregon was a tough serving team but UH is killing it on serves. One thing is the passing that had our setter running around everywhere. If they can stabilize that, then we can run more plays then just setting to the outside. Things are looking great, can’t wait to see how it all goes in the coming weeks/months!

  44. HawaiiMongoose August 30, 2015 6:34 pm

Terrific all-around match. When the Wahine are passing well and can use all their weapons… wow.

  45. warriorfan August 30, 2015 6:40 pm

To be honest I was hoping Casey would redshirt, but I think she will be a good one.

  46. warriorfan August 30, 2015 6:42 pm

WSU is a maybe sweet sixteen team, OSU probably bottom 5 in the pac 12. probably not a tourney team.

Next week will be a lot like this week, toughest team will be on saturday, American looked good against Florida.

  47. Munson August 30, 2015 6:46 pm

And to think that certain posters were saying earlier that Hawaii should play Huff or even Castillo over Manu-Olevao tonight.

Although I’m sure they’ll show up at any second to say that Hawaii would have won 25-0, 25-0, 25-0 if Manu-Olevao hadn’t played.

  48. warriorfan August 30, 2015 6:49 pm

She played well.Last night she did not, no need to say I told you so’s.

  49. warriorfan August 30, 2015 6:50 pm

As a senior Olevao needs to be more steady and not so streaky like Olivia. Hope she doesn’t have games like last night anymore, not passing might help her.

  50. Maverick August 30, 2015 6:50 pm

    47. The season is early. Let’s see how it plays out.

  51. H-Man August 30, 2015 6:50 pm

Annie Mitchem did a nice post-game interview. She’s a winner. Doesn’t like spam, but likes mac-salad.

  52. warriorfan August 30, 2015 6:55 pm

The hitting percentage for Hawaii this weekend, is great, I think it will continue to stay high when Mitchem gets going offensively.

  53. kkv3000 August 30, 2015 6:56 pm

Got to give big credit to Tai Manu-olevao. She is definitely is one of our best athletes and hit with authority tonite. I do believe that too much weight was put on her shoulders, with left side hitting, passing and serving. She is a good player but not good enough to carry all those responsibilities. I would be very happy to have her concentrate on her offense and blocking, maybe some serving in future if her confidence returns. I definitely think they should play Granato for back row and passing.

  54. surfboy August 30, 2015 7:05 pm

Annie Mitchem’s upside will be HUGE, as soon as she gets acclimated, hopefully before the tourney with Florida, she will be included as one of the top options on the team….

  55. cruisecontrol August 30, 2015 7:05 pm

I know about Taylor, Magill, and Higgins, but who else was on the all tourney team?

  56. WaWa August 30, 2015 7:18 pm

I didn’t get to watch tonight’s game, it always seems that the nights I miss are when the reserves get to play and this dates back to as far as I can remember watching Wahine volleyball.

Anyhow, after last night’s match I wasn’t sold on any rotation that Taylor hits on the left, whether it was Manu-Olevao/Huff swinging on the right & definitely not having her a part of serve-receive. I also felt that Granato coming in as a backrow sub should continue forever. Let Manu-Olevao focus on the rotations in which she is swinging in the front row and whatever s/r duties that entails.

However, like tonight’s match seemed to prove, Manu-Olevao will bounce back as she is a very resilient player. Granato will continue to make for a great sub whether it be back/front row, but I definitely don’t think whether now or in the future that Manu-Olevao should be replaced in the line-up entirely by Granato. Manu-Olevao is the workhorse of this team and if we want any shot of going the deepest possible into the tourney it is with her swinging on the outside, provided she is DSed in the back.

(This is also provided that Burns ends up redshirting, cause should she not redshirt than a case could POSSIBLY made for Mitchem to get reps passing and swinging on the left. We’ll open that box if/when it ever comes to it).

  57. m August 30, 2015 7:20 pm

Higgins was a digging machine tonight.

  58. Setaone August 30, 2015 7:21 pm

One thing Magill needs to work on is her non-hitting/blocking skills. She seems a little timid in doing the off plays (balls out of the net, getting the dink over the block). Just needs to be a little more aggressive and assertive.

  59. blunite August 30, 2015 7:49 pm

The passing of Casey Castillo and McKenna Granato, bode well for the future. I’d like to see Mitchum, Huff, and Maglio in the backrow. The length (height) of these girls allows them to play up and still cover the endline. This will effectively give UH 5 attackers at all times (D set from any back-row position). (The libero position is strictly defensive and a handicap.) Being able to rotate through and pass will also increase their chances of playing professionally.

    .

  60. tongo August 30, 2015 7:52 pm

Once Mitchem established the slide as a viable threat, it started to create more one on one for Greeley. You can already see it. Annie hits a heavy ball and knows how to keep the ball in play. She wasn’t ready to hit couple times and I am sure Dave let her know about it. Once acclimated, we will have another serious attacker.

Also though Emily Magilo is playing well and is just starting to show what she can do. Just one position for two very deserving young ladies – what to do?

  61. darkfire August 30, 2015 7:54 pm

I’ll try not to repeat things that people have already posted. I only saw some of the game. But the parts I did see is where I’ve noticed the biggest change in Greely’s spike…it has a lot more “pop” to it. Last year, the speed was too readable and returnable. Now she’s laying down some good shots. Court vision has markedly improved on the parts of McGill, both Taylors and Greely. They’re not dinking or pushing just for the sake of it, they do it exactly where no one is standing. And Anderson was their good luck charm last night. UH tended to get a scoring run when she was serving. I’d like to see more effort on the step out attack. They’re doing nicely on the 3-1 and D1 attacks now. GO BOWS!

  62. warriorfan August 30, 2015 8:03 pm

I know it’s alot of work, but I hope in the offseason, Annie, Kalei, Emily and Maybe Casey all decide to play beach volleyball. It has helped Nikki’s game tremendously and helped Emily as well.

  63. LanaiBoy August 30, 2015 8:25 pm

Dave Shoji is right. The three defensive specialists are all about even. Anderson, Guinasso, and Ponce all served well (few errors) and played defense well too. Shoji should have confidence in playing all three in tight matches. I assume Anderson has the edge since she played most of the first two matches.

  64. vballfreak808 August 30, 2015 8:37 pm

I’m glad all three defensive specialists got to play tonight. They all got to show some defense which we rarely get to see since they are only in for one rotation. I have faith in which ever one gets to come in and serve.

  65. darkfire August 30, 2015 9:04 pm

Just a little observation…I was watching the tape (yes I still have a VCR) of tonight’s game. And during the Game On segment, Ryan Kalei Tsuji was talking about the front runners of the OSU team, particularly Mary-Kate Marshall. What is interesting of note, was they had the camera on her watching the Wahine during their spiking/kill warm ups. It was easy to read her lips. The first word that came out was, “Wow” and “Jes**”. I think, the team psyched themselves out from the get-go. GO BOWS! Can’t wait till next week!!!! ;o)

  66. Shar August 30, 2015 9:53 pm

Cindy, do you know what was wrong with Tai Manu-Olevao’s foot? I noticed that after the game she cut the tape off of her foot and there was gauze and it seemed a bit bloody. I hope it is okay.

Tonight’s game was excellent. The crowd was good for all three games. The preseason is good. Hope it continues.

Did OSU fly out tonight? I noticed they did not stay for the awards.

  67. Cindy Luis August 30, 2015 10:05 pm

    66. sorry. don’t know. didn’t see what you described.

Good match all the way around I thought that maybe Shoji would play his whole B team in Set 3 but think he wanted to make sure the match was well in hand before doing wholesale subs The reserves played well. only one who didn’t score was Castillo of the attackers.

As noted earlier, the sub of Granato for Manu-Olevao paid off. Think it took pressure off Manu-Olevao, who was conflicted about playing Sunday. She said she felt the support of her whole team when playing today.

Shoji pleased overall. said he wanted to reward everyone for all the hard work during camp. And still looking at ways to get players like Huff in.

  68. warriorfan August 30, 2015 10:40 pm

I think Nikki will for sure get Big west POW, but hopefully she gets recognized as the avca player of the week as well.

  69. Brandon August 30, 2015 10:52 pm

Nikki is Big west POW. Don’t know about AVCA though. Certainly has a case with her KPS, but Hawaii did not play stellar competition.

  70. warriorfan August 30, 2015 10:54 pm

That big kill Annie had in the second set, I envision a lot more of those when she gets more comfortable, UH will need that which is why I would start her.

  71. wildcard August 30, 2015 11:20 pm

the shock troops of na wahine! dominated.

people underestimated the power of tai. the team didnt vote her captain for no reason. on the game on segment, ryan kalei tsuji even commented during their euro trip, tai was being scouted and that shoji had to tell them hold on she has 1 more year left!

    2. osu one time stepped onto the court when serving which should of been a service error.

    4. yeah higgins couldnt dig a bullet very well to save her life.

granato is a fierce all-around player especially as a defender and server (only service error was too strong but never into the net, consider her lucky serve, a ‘tricky’ ace). yeah she more than makes up covering tais back.

    17. agreed.

    25. definitely.

    47. lmao

    51. i hate spam too

    53. concur.

    54. yup

    58. yes magill and any middle should take up deflecting balls over the net (attacking the opponent spike vice blocking)

    60. as evident, kalei rocked. emily better in the latter matches but a bit timid.

    61. yes kalei sharpened her spike. clairemarie good luck charm eh?

    63. claire should be the next in line ds/libero indeed.

  72. wildcard August 30, 2015 11:24 pm

btw cindy thanks for the link to what everyone calls volleytalk in the previous thread. you said not so much for the faint of heart, nah. it was tldr and didnt have to anyways. just a bunch(ton) of bull.

  73. ignaciosaid August 31, 2015 4:23 am

CINDY , I’ve always forgotten to say “thank you” for the reporting of UHWVB ! I have been a fan since “the Klum years” and I am totally incredulous of the possibi- lities of this years’ team! I have not always agreed with Coaches , But , they know the game and especially the players! Dave believes in his women and always gives them room (he just looks mean , at times–but he’s okay)! That’s the big reason (among other things) why these women play with such passion. Anyway , sorry for getting deep. My BEST to the 2015/41st season edition and ——GO BOWS

  74. tongo August 31, 2015 5:42 am

#51 Very funny! I agree with Annie Mitchem’s comment about spam. But Spam Musubi is the exception and is actually pretty good.

  75. LanaiBoy August 31, 2015 6:00 am

Does not look like the Big West will present much of a challenge this year, especially if you go by Long Beach State, chosen 2nd in the preseason poll. Watched them against Saint Mary’s on Big West TV. LBS lost badly, the team making all kinds of unforced errors. Saint Mary’s was chosen to finish 8th in the WCC preseason poll. However, LBS did beat Alabama and Duke for a record of 2-1. On the other hand, LBS may just have had a bad match or Saint Mary’s is way under-rated. It’s early and we’ll see as the season actually plays out.

  76. tongo August 31, 2015 6:46 am

#74 Saw both Beach games against Alabama and Duke on Big West TV. IMO, this is typical Beach team with big girls from couple transfers and international players. They don’t appear to have the players. They do have their moments when they string things together. Both backrow and frontcourt is still jelling and can be ugly. Moved 6’4″backup MH Wallace to Opp to block and it seen to help them greatly.

  77. mojo August 31, 2015 6:59 am

    Some personal Observations:
    – Granato in for passing/serving: great. we see better chemistry and confidence.
    – Higgins still needs to work her setting to the middles… still inconsistant and
    low for all three middles.
    – Give Kendra more playing time: Game three would have been a perfect oportunity to see what she can do with extended minutes.
    – Pray Taylor stays healthy… shes the anchor for this team like Emily was.
    – Give Baby G. more playing time.. I believe shes the quickest and the only one who played sand (??).
    – Kahakai improving but looks a little slow to the ball (is this just me)?

  78. Cindy Luis August 31, 2015 7:13 am

    66. it was weird about OSU because Liskevych still in the arena long after the awards were done. Wichita State left last night, coach stayed through UH’s Set 1. came over to say that he had already asked Shoi to be invited two years from now when he thinks he could have his best team ever

  79. Cindy Luis August 31, 2015 7:24 am

68 etc. No reason why Taylor won’t be BWC POW. would think she’s under consideration for national POW. But USC had two big wins over teams ranked higher than them (I would have said overrated in UNC’s case) but you never know.

    71. there were a few foot faults by OSU not called. But a number of net violations on them not called either.

Yep, OCS tends to ‘borrow’ from what what was written when I was with the team in Europe. They did ask to use some of my video and pictures. Since I haven’t watched the broadcasts I don’t know if those were used or if they credited it as they promised. The word the Euro coaches used about Manu-Olevao was ‘dynamic.”

    73. you’re welcome. So glad we weren’t in Klum this week. would have been beyond miserable with the humidity.

    74. think Hawaii’s biggest challenge will be the schedule as the lone wolf and the last 6 matches on the road, including 4 in 7 days.

  80. Cindy Luis August 31, 2015 7:29 am

BWC twitter has Taylor nominated for both overall and defensive POW

  81. Cindy Luis August 31, 2015 7:48 am

    http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=32883

    new thread up for Monday

  82. LanaiBoy August 31, 2015 7:49 am

Saw USC on Pac 12 TV. Samantha Bricio will be Taylor’s main competition for national POW. Boy, is she impressive. Powerful jump serves and the ability to hit bullets from all over the court. There may be other good (unseen) performances by other players however. Of course I’m strongly rooting for Nikki Taylor. By the time Taylor is a senior she could be at the level of a Hartong or Danielson in terms of dominance and importance to the team.
