Fonoti’s availability: “Very probable”

Head coach Greg McMackin said it is “very probable” defensive end Fetaiagogo “John” Fonoti will play in Friday’s opener against Central Arkansas. It was feared Fonoti suffered a serious injury to his left knee when he was carted off the practice field this morning. But after extensive medical tests, it was ruled he suffered a bruise.

McMackin officially named Brent Rausch as the No. 2 quarterback.

Mr. and Mrs. A-House are the winners of the field passes for the UH-Utah State game. They were selected from a pool of donors for the new rehab bicycle. Na Koa’s Don Weir provided the passes.

Thanks to associate head coach Rich Miano and former UH standout Nate Ilaoa for appearing on today’s Warrior Beat Show.

At the urging of his athletic director, Central Arkansas head coach Clint Conque has started a Twitter account. He said he tweets about twice a day. “But I don’t have a Facebook account,” he said.

    Question for Coach Miano:

Most say the difference between the NFL and college is the speed of the game. As a defensive back and now coach, is there a big difference in coaching techniques between what you coach at now and what you experienced at the pro level????

  38. 808Chef September 1, 2009 7:22 am

    Wassup Nasti and Coach Miano!

    coach,
i haven’t had the chance to watch any practices, my question is, with this group of DB’s, is there any player that has the “PACKAGE” to play at the Next Level? mahalos

  41. djmitcho September 1, 2009 7:48 am

Good Morning All! Another day closer to Warrior Football. I’m starting to get amped up ova hea in da PNW.

  42. Pu'en Tsai September 1, 2009 7:52 am

    “Nasti” Nate

thanks for entertaining us with your outstanding play for all those years, although i wish you didn’t miss all that time that you did, due to different injuries that you had. anyway, is the Football playing days over? if so, what about following your boy L. Peters and playing some RUGBY?

  43. Kekoa (iPhone) September 1, 2009 7:53 am

Q: Coach Miano, who was your mentor when you played at UH?…with the Jets?

Q: Nate, Who was the #1 influence in your football life? Do you feel like you would like to pursue coaching?

  44. Pu'en Tsai September 1, 2009 8:02 am

    COACH,

as a kid back in the day, i remember seeing you running KILAUEA Ave. up in Kaimuki, is that still part of your workout? what benefits do you gain from running the steep hill?

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid September 1, 2009 8:05 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

I just got off the phone with Rich and he says that the fires are about 10 miles away, so he’s safe for now. The smoke is pretty bad, though. He thanks everyone here for their concern.

  46. Da Punchbowl Kid September 1, 2009 8:07 am

    To Coach Miano and Nasti-
Lots of folks are talking about UH being upset this Friday by the under rated Bears. I don’t agree. Do you think the guys Warriors are ready to play hard this week?

  47. warriorfanny2 September 1, 2009 8:07 am

bears have an interesting D-gameplan but it wont be for their box+one to play “soft”. lol.

  48. royvic September 1, 2009 8:11 am

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/sports/baseball/01hawaii.html?_r=1&ref=sports

This story featured yesterday in the New York Times is about the Hawaii High School Athletic Association fund raising drive called Save our Sports, where private citizens and corporations have come together in keeping alive high school sports for the Hawaii school kids in the wake of the state government’s financial crisises.

The man behind the scene is the association’s chairman, Keith Amemiya. And what he is doing is helping raising monies and drumming up pledges is very similar to what bh2 did in generating pledges for the bike drive. For they both have the love in their hearts in helping the kids. And it’s through their leadership that things get done.

People that overcome adversity, like Amemiya, instead of bellying up are masterminds. And he’s doing everything in his power to being the best surrogate for the kids.

And if Amemiya had whispered to the New York Times editor in featuring this story so that it further generates publicity resulting in more pledges coming in from all across the country how ingenious is that.

Not only does Amemiya hit out of the park in his providing the needed leadership, also note that in the article it said that Amemiya and his wife donated 30k.

I applaud Amemiya. For there’s no doubt in my mind a lesser man would have left the fates of the kids in peril.

  49. 702WarriorNation September 1, 2009 8:16 am

Fonoti reported down with left knee injury results from 11 on 11 this morning. Presently being carted off the field as reported on 1420 called in.

  50. d1島 September 1, 2009 8:17 am

John Fonoti carted off practice field holding his left knee.

per R. Kekaula: hurt during 11’s….on the ground, screaming, holding his knee….not good

  51. 702WarriorNation September 1, 2009 8:21 am

Hi d1, guess we both listening to the same program this morning eh?
Hope it’s not as serious and he’s able to play later….. now gotta wait
    for report on his injury.

Lets hope we get some good news on TW show today on John.
So, whose left on the line that can step up?
Gotta find someone to step up and not wait for next year

  57. Jack Flash September 1, 2009 8:25 am

    Question for Nate:
How did you and Colt make the shovel pass play look so effortless? I haven’t seen it run lately anywhere near as perfect as you guys ran it back in your day. Please share your secrets with Greg Alexander and the current running backs.

  58. d1島 September 1, 2009 8:27 am

    Bulla,

#2 starts next week at home against #4 ranked team. Might as well see whatcha got early, eh?

He’s working thru a pulled hammy from the second day of practice…disappointing for him…#1 counseling him to be patient and come back strong when he’s ready.

  59. djmitcho September 1, 2009 8:28 am

This injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. Time for some people on the D-line to step up to the plate and prove themselves by jumping into the fire. Best wishes to John Fonoti.

  60. Pomai September 1, 2009 8:29 am

    #51 Wow that sucks.

  61. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 8:33 am

    move masch to DE.

d1, im sorry i cant stay confident. DE was already thin on depth, i dont see anyone stepping up

  62. Da Punchbowl Kid September 1, 2009 8:36 am

    Prayers for Fonoti.

  63. (Jesse) James September 1, 2009 8:38 am

Good morning Tsaikos…hope all is well.

Prayers for all the Tsaikos in SoCal…

Aiyaahhhh….bad news regarding John Fonoti…hope it isn’t as serious as it sounds… 🙁 Somebody just has to step it up and show their stuff…just bring, leave nothing to chance.

I am hoping the team comes out fired and not laid back or else we are going to be caught off-guard ala Michigan/Appalachian State.

  64. (Jesse) James September 1, 2009 8:45 am

    Coach Miano

How are the coaches preparing the team to get fired up for Central Arkansas? One of my pet peeves, even when I was playing, is that people take smaller teams lightly too often. I’ve already heard from some around town about what a blowout it is going to be against Central Arkansas. I keep telling them that Central Arkansas is a good team and they can play. Just because they are a smaller school doesn’t mean they can’t play.

I know in some of the interviews after the Michigan loss to Appalachian State, the Michigan players were saying they didn’t take them seriously and weren’t fired up to play and were already looking towards their next game. Well, we all know what happened.

I hope you guys don’t take Central Arkansas lightly and bring everything you have…bring the A game Coach…!!!

    Thanks.

  65. d1島 September 1, 2009 8:49 am

    lgw,

No prob…there’s some shock factor in that news…maybe take a look at Heun at DE? 😕

  66. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 8:51 am

i heard Heun was looking good in unsupervised workouts as a DE. thats another good option. gets us paper thin at MLB after that move. domino effect.

  67. Pu C. Galore September 1, 2009 8:58 am

oh my. let Tua Mahaley and Victor Clore play.

  68. Pu C. Galore September 1, 2009 8:59 am

    what about aaron rink

  69. Pu C. Galore September 1, 2009 8:59 am

  71. warriorfanny2 September 1, 2009 9:03 am

Not looking good on DL, depth is below 2.0, experience is paper-thin….injuries on every D-unit including DT, DE, MLB, CB and S…..ouchhhh!
That’s Y JJ stayed away from contact in camp….something MAC has changed.

  72. al September 1, 2009 9:07 am

    ugh….fonoti’s injury sounds bad.

someone will step up to the plate. perhaps it will be toilolo, liko, allen-jones, waylon, falemalu, or perhaps we get a maracle. maybe its time has come sooner and a star is born.

  73. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 9:08 am

i like hitting in practice…LOL. jsut betta make sure u got some depth!

  74. al September 1, 2009 9:12 am

nasti….thanks for the years of making memories. i don’t think we’ll ever see the likes of such a combination of size, shake n bake, speed, and power like we enjoyed in you.

is their anything that you teach the running backs other than what came naturally to you that help improve their game?

  75. al September 1, 2009 9:13 am

nasti….what is your target date for graduation and what are you majoring in?

  76. al September 1, 2009 9:16 am

rich…we all know you as the ultimate over-achiever. what a story. i know you use your personal experiences to inspire greatness to the players.

who in the past few years literally exemplified that same mantra?

  77. LizKauai (We are FAMILY!) September 1, 2009 9:18 am

    Don Weir- Date is saved!

Prayers for the Warriors- stay healthy- esp Fonoti…

COACH MIANO- Thanks for helping make the Wahine Football Clinic educational and FUN! Excluding game experience, how would you compare our new crop of players compared to last year’s veterans.

NASTI- Seeing you at the Wahine Football Clinic was like “oh yeah- Nate is here! Something special is happening!” How would you describe your role with the team now?

  78. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 9:19 am

im kinda pissed that mack didnt recruit a JC DE.

  79. madeinhawaii September 1, 2009 9:19 am

Fonoti’s injury made my heart stop! We can’t afford to lose the leaders in Defense OR Offense.

  80. LizKauai (We are FAMILY!) September 1, 2009 9:21 am

NASTI- Have you been staying in touch with Colt? Did he share anything with you that you can share with us?

  81. LizKauai (We are FAMILY!) September 1, 2009 9:22 am

NASTI- Do you see anyone on the Warriors team that reminds you of you???

  82. BIGWAVE96744 September 1, 2009 9:23 am

btw, did they ever find a replacement for Stutz I?
    Is Nasti eligible?

  83. madeinhawaii September 1, 2009 9:32 am

    (Jesse)James,

I guess they are all looking over that 5’9″ center of Central Arkansas and not seeing the trees besides him.

With Fonoti down, it’s even a greater challenge for our Warriors. Central Arkansas, on the other hand has also been plagued with injuries. I believe their top receiver, and starting quarterback are sidelined. BUT they seem to have a lot of confidence in their defense.

  84. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 9:34 am

  85. al September 1, 2009 9:43 am

we did recruit jc de’s though unsuccessful.
we even had a few hs lb’s we were hoping to convert that signed or committed but were unable cut through the academics or were greyshirted.

  86. Hoohiki September 1, 2009 9:43 am

    RE: #49
I think Jim Donovan is doing a good job, but I can’t help wondering what Amemiya could’ve done for UH Athletics if he was AD. One of the knocks on him during his candidacy was lacking connections with the mainland, but his resourcefullness and “never say die” attitude could’ve overcome that.

  87. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 9:50 am

u cant expect a HS LB turned DE to contribute their true Frosh year though. i guess at least they tried.

  88. al September 1, 2009 9:52 am

we whiffed on ryan davis last year. even brought him in for a tour.

XXX-ing the fingers concerning Fonoti’s injury. Where did this happen? On the grass field or Ching Field? Were any other players involved? Stephen, please keep us apprised. Mahalo.

  90. kama krab September 1, 2009 10:08 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Didn’t we get a commitment from a JC DE last year Jon Bon Watts but he decided to stay on the mainland for personal reasons. If we had gotten him into school, we probably would not be hurting as much. JMO

  91. bstunna2002 September 1, 2009 10:09 am

Prayers go out to Fonoti hope it’s not as serious as it seemed.

  92. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2009 10:14 am

    kama krab:
Jon Bon Watts did commit, but it turned out he had a couple of kids in Florida, and the coaches felt it would be better if he stayed on the Mainland.

  93. Pu C. Galore September 1, 2009 10:15 am

I got a whiff of that, and it doesn’t smell good.

Ryan Davis, the guy that just wanted a free trip to Hawaii when it was well known that he was gonna commit elsewhere? You mean that guy? Man you are the king of hype.

  94. al September 1, 2009 10:17 am

    in case i forget….

prayers of hope to our family and friends in molokai.
    pray for rain.

  95. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2009 10:19 am

Kamalu Umu has been practicing with the Warriors. The former Saint Louis DE (who attended Charleston Southern last year) has to redshirt this year. He’ll have two years after that.

  96. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2009 10:20 am

And we’d like to thank the Warrior Beat’s proud new sponsor — Hilton Hotels.

  97. Garret September 1, 2009 10:20 am

I hope that Fonoti’s injury isn’t too bad and that he’s fully healthy soon. The timing is extremely bad not just for this game, but because UH goes on an extended road trip after this and the rehab facilities won’t be as easily available for people on the road.

  98. Garret September 1, 2009 10:20 am

Didn’t ST mention that there were 3 Warriors that the coaches said they couldn’t afford to lose and two of them were Brashton and Fonoti?

  99. Garret September 1, 2009 10:21 am

UH’s 17-page game note document for the UCA game is on their website.

  100. Garret September 1, 2009 10:22 am

Colt and Chase will play all but one series of the next preseason game. Neither will get to play with the other players in the first team offense.

As for the quarterback rotation, the plan is for Jason Campbell and the first-team offense to play only one series. Backup Todd Collins is expected to sit out, providing more time for Colt Brennan and Chase Daniel to battle for the No. 3 job.

  101. Garret September 1, 2009 10:24 am

Camarillo was with the first-team offense for Miami today, so apparently both Camarillo and Hartline are ahead of Bess.

Greg Camarillo is working with the starting receivers today, leapfrogging over Brian Hartline and Davone Bess.

Why? Probably because they want to see how last year’s opening game starter responds to the late call-up. Last year Camarillo got a similar call up after Derek Hagan’s bad showing in the New Orleans exhibition game and never looked back, becoming Chad Pennington’s favorite target.

I’m surprised Bess hasn’t shifted into another gear. I picked him as the offensive player primed for a breakout season in the Sun-Sentinel’s Football section, that debuts on Friday. You have to figure he’ll at least match his production from last season, right?

  102. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 10:25 am

Garret, back in 06 (i think, might have been 07) UH stayed on the road for 2 games. they stayed 1 below the travel roster and flew Fonoti up for the second half of the road trip. i say do it again if the timing applies.

  103. Garret September 1, 2009 10:26 am

    Feature story about Jake Ingram.

The 23-year-old Ingram said the lessons he learned from his time with Hodel will serve him well down the road.

“He definitely, definitely did help me,” Ingram said Tuesday morning. “He’s never a guy who was trying to treat me like a rookie. It seemed like he was more trying to help me out, trying to help me get better. And also, we were pushing other, hopefully making each other better.

“It was awesome having him around, and I wish the best of luck to him and his family. I’m sure he’ll get a job soon.”

“At his college position, he was the best in the country. Period,” said Hawaii coach Greg McMackin. “I’ve had him here the last two years, and he was 100 percent on all snaps. I don’t want to hex him, but I’ve never seen a bad snap from him.

“I think Bill Belichick has made an outstanding decision.”

  104. Garret September 1, 2009 10:26 am

Ingram talked about the downside of winning the roster battle.

Making the team is a double-edged sword for Ingram — he said Monday his ponytail will have to be replaced by braids as part of the rookie haircut tradition.

  105. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 10:27 am

actually it had to be 07 bc he didnt play in 06

  106. al September 1, 2009 10:30 am

    good news on fonoti.

  107. Garret September 1, 2009 10:30 am

    letsgowarriors,

I agree, UH shouldn’t have Fonoti with the team unless he’s okay to play. The downside of leaving him home for the first game is that means he’ll miss the Washington State game and leadership could be very important for the inexperienced Warriors D playing their first road game of the season.

If UH was playing at home for the second and third games, the cutoff for Fonoti to play would be later. However, the travel roster has to be made and they have to take into account the different capability for rehabbing injuries on the road.

  108. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2009 10:31 am

    Vaughn Meatoga was the third.

  109. Garret September 1, 2009 10:31 am

    Al,

I agree that seems like good news on Fonoti. However, I won’t feel comfortable until all the medical results are in. Wasn’t Fonoti being limited in practice even before this due to injury?

  110. Cindy Cee September 1, 2009 10:39 am

    Good day, Gang!

  111. Stephen Tsai September 1, 2009 10:39 am

There’s no travel limit on non-conference games, so Fonoti could go along even if he’s not available immediately.
    Well, maybe the there’s a travel-budget limit …

  112. Garret September 1, 2009 10:41 am

    ST,

I’m thinking of the travel budget limit, and the probable limit of the number of doctors, trainers, and rehab equipment being brought on the plane.

  113. Bulla September 1, 2009 10:42 am

let’s go D line, step up!!!!!

  114. Justin September 1, 2009 10:46 am

How is Liko Satele as a player?
He certainly climbed up the depth chart quickly for a guy who has not been for that long.

  115. letsgowarriors September 1, 2009 10:59 am

    stephen,

i think after redshirting this season, Umu will only have 1 to play 1. and he is a DT not a DE.

  116. Shauna September 1, 2009 11:32 am

Hi everyone! We’re still taking questions for the Warrior Beat show…

  117. Loa September 1, 2009 11:47 am

    morning gang!

    question for Nate

have you had a chance to catch some waves since you came back to the islands?

  118. Loa September 1, 2009 11:49 am

    question for Coach Miano

did you get a ring for the ’79 prep bowl?
if so, when was the last time you tried it on? 🙂

  119. Loa September 1, 2009 11:52 am

d1島 – #66 was thinking the same thing about huen, thats one crazy bugga, plus he get one cool hairdo

  120. Loa September 1, 2009 11:54 am

Shauna – anyway for the fans to watch the older replays of the show?

  121. ATsaiofRelief September 1, 2009 11:59 am

    Lil Wayne sux

  122. Shauna September 1, 2009 11:59 am

Loa: There was a way but apparently the current link shows the option only to watch a replay of the current show. Our online crew is aware of the problem and will fix it so you can watch older episodes. Sorry about that!

  123. Scott Morifuji September 1, 2009 12:08 pm

Loa: Click on the menu button on the player, then click on “browse on demand library” Not all of the shows are in there, but we’re working on moving all of them over.

  127. bstunna2002 September 1, 2009 12:30 pm

What about Aaron Rink I thought he stood out in spring practice

  128. Garret September 1, 2009 12:37 pm

David Veikune has been practicing at *four* positions with the Browns and has been working with their first team D.

(On how David Veikune looked on film working with the first team)- “David’s worked a lot of different spots. Some of it’s been out of necessity. Some of it’s been out of trying to expose him to a lot of different things and find out where his strengths are. He has to be swimming. He’s played inside. He’s played outside. He’s played the buck position. He’s played defensive end and he’s going from a three-point to a two-point. There’s a lot of information. It will serve him well over time. The important thing, that I’ve tried to get across to everybody, and especially the rookies, because, I don’t know about their college programs, but what I try to get across to them is understanding the whole defense. If you understand the whole defense and why we’re doing it, what it’s designed to stop, what it should look like, where people should fit, then problems aren’t as tough to figure out and new looks aren’t as hard to process. When you just know your spot, other stuff doesn’t make any sense.”

  129. LizKauai - We are FAMILY- GO WARRIORS! September 1, 2009 12:43 pm

Sad stream – Solly was released…

    Hey- d1Shima’s question ???

  130. d1島 September 1, 2009 12:45 pm

Hah? What? I couldn’t hear the answer!

    Oh well, great show guys!

    d1 you broke the stream.

  132. jojo ® September 1, 2009 12:50 pm

Hello, this is jojo, I forgot my earphones and I don’t have speakers on my computer, so I need to watch the show later.

  133. warriorfanny2 September 1, 2009 1:18 pm

Fonoti should consider a medical hardship 6th year.
Difficult to comeback, given the timing of his injury–especially at his DE position as former DE and converted DT Chris L. can testify. The bears are known for tough,
    quick, cut-block schemes.

  134. Stretch September 1, 2009 1:21 pm

Is anyone going to the Call the Coach show this evening??

  135. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 1, 2009 1:28 pm

Stretch – Where is it? Not that familiar with Waikiki except for the big hotels. What time? How much?

  136. Stretch September 1, 2009 1:31 pm

Outrigger Reef Hotel, next to Halekulani
I think it starts at 6?? maybe someone can confirm
Don’t think there is a fee to attend but valet is $6.

  137. jm2375 September 1, 2009 1:51 pm

    Stretch – I think they said 6:30.

BTW, saw the poster, but don’t know the details – show your Warrior Jack at Jack in the Box and get 10% off your order.

  138. Nalani September 1, 2009 2:12 pm

Aloha Tsaiko’s. My apologies for not being able to make this first and very auspicious kickoff tailgate to the100th anniversary UH Football Season. We will be booking it from Pono’s football practice to the game (hopefully) just before kickoff. Pono will be drumming w Vili again this year.

Also hoping to make it in time to see #65 run thru the tunnel.

    Go Warriors!!!

  139. da princess' classmate September 1, 2009 2:20 pm

sucks about fonoti’s injury. hope he’s able to recover as quickly as possible, hopefully some of the young pups will emerge.

interesting to note that fresno’s qb from the last couple years, brandstater could be starting for denver come week 1 as a rookie due to injuries to orton and simms. very interested to see how he does if he indeed has to start, hopefully colt will get his opportunity soon…

  140. Nalani September 1, 2009 2:21 pm

I thought Brandstater looked better than Orton in the game anyway. I hope he starts.

Never been a fan of Orton. Doesn’t even look athletic. Look at Colt, Tebow, Bradley? (the starting QB for USC)…now those guys look like football players. But Orton and even Cutler, not so much.

  141. d1島 September 1, 2009 2:30 pm

$6 parking; no $1 Heineken; Ala Moana Blvd. traffic….

not exactly the recipe for success 🙄

  142. d1島 September 1, 2009 2:45 pm

    Nalani,

Should just be a walk-thru practice, eh? Maybe can make it for the tailgate….

  143. LizKauai (We are FAMILY!) September 1, 2009 2:49 pm

    Hi Nalani!

    Whoosh!

  144. warriorfanny2 September 1, 2009 3:04 pm

The Big Six on our schedule will run smashball at our D– LaT, FSU, BSU, NEV, NAVY and WISC….our DL is banged-up, untested, inexperienced and light on its perimeter….ditto with our LB and DB units.
ca, wsu, unlv and sjsu will try the same.
The first four games will tell the tale….

  145. al September 1, 2009 3:06 pm

somebody asked about rink….he is somewhere near 215 lbs.

  146. Nalani September 1, 2009 3:20 pm

D1 – Yup, a short one on Friday. But w traffic from KS to Aloha Stadium on a Friday, I’ll be happy to just make the pre-game festivities. Man these Friday games are not my favorite!

  147. Slugger September 1, 2009 3:21 pm

    Nalani,

Did you see Kaha’i in the HA video of practice?

  148. Nalani September 1, 2009 3:22 pm

    No Slugger…where is that??

  149. Pomai September 1, 2009 3:25 pm

    #102Garret

The thing I could never understand is how can you evaluate the QB if you don’t let them play with the first string players? It’s obvious that you can’t run the system if you have to scramble every play because your line sucks.

  150. Nalani September 1, 2009 3:27 pm

Slugger – i just saw. Boy you get good eyes.

  151. Slugger September 1, 2009 3:31 pm

Congratulations Mr & Mrs A-house on scoring those sideline passes!

➡ Please be very careful down on the field. I’m not too concerned about Mr. A-house. However, I worry that I might see you on the Jumbo screen *jacking* the officials! (Wait until they go into their locker room near the dugout and out of camera range). Hehehehe!

Great news about John Fonoti! 🙂

We do request that if you plan on wearing sport apparel that it is UnderArmour; they are a corporate sponsor of Warrior Football and we are sensitive to their request concerning logos that are visible on the sidelines.

We look forward to hosting you on the sidelines.

Again, mahalo to all who were in on the bike project. YOU make a difference for Warrior Football.

    (For our mainland Tsaikos)

1st Call The Coach Show of the 2009 season notes:

-Coach Mack says they had a good team meeting today and that the players are anxious to play someone else.

-Coach Mack confirms John Fonoti’s injury was a bruised knee cap and is a gametime decision.

-Bobby asks Coach Mack about Corey Parades. Coach Mack likes his speed and attitude. Says he gave him a schollie and is sure Parades will be playing a lot this season and also mentions Richard Torres as another person that got rewarded for excellent attitudes and work efforts. Coach praises RJ Keisel-Kauhane as one that has really earned his spot this season as a voted-in leader. Bobby brings up Keisel-Kauhane’s physical strength in comparison to his frame (5’11” 225lbs) and Coach Mack says RJ must be one of if not the strongest player he’s coached pound for pound.

-Coach Mack gives an example of team leadership and says he is not worried because of players like Rocky and Blaze, but says “they don’t talk right now” because they haven’t played much last year and are waiting to make plays during actual games and then expects them to be more vocal, but they do lead by example during practice. (Hmmm… interesting choice of description…)

-Coach Mack says that Blaze and Rocky both have fires inside of them waiting to turn into WILDFIRES as he mentions how they both had to sit and watch the games last year and it ate them up.

-Coach Mack thanks the people for showing up and says there is a great crowd. Bobby then plugs the fan promotions listed on http://www.hawaiiathletics.com for this Friday’s season opener.

***commercial break and phone calls next***

    Much Mahalos !!

1st Call The Coach Show of 2009 notes (continued):

***Back from commercial break with calls from fans***

-John asks Coach about the offensive line. Coach says he is excited and says Coach Shaw was chosen carefully and says that Shaw is a coach that can relate to players and can coach a top center (John Estes) and Mack wanted to make sure Estes is coached to make sure he excels. Coach says they were conservative as an offense last year because they were “learning” the offense and it will be WIDE open this season especially since their blocking schemes have changed. Coach Mack mentions how close the o line was during the off-season and they went out to eat and hang out together.

-Mark tells Coach Mack that “we support you and what ever is in the past is in the past”. Coach Mack says that he is proud of his past and excited about the future. Mark asks Coach about the pre-season WAC standings. Coach says “it’s how you finish” and says he can see why the “mainlanders” are picking us last, but does credit it as motivation and Coach Mack says the players have a lot of pride and honestly says that the 2009 team is going to give Hawaii a lot to smile about this season.

-Mel asks Coach Mack about how the defensive scheme matches up against UCA. Coach says they made some moves to increase their speed like Paipai to DE and Aaron Brown to a LB position in addition to his DB duties. Coach says Brown will be playing a lot, but not sure about this Friday, but will play more especially against “WARSHINGTON STATE” 😉 . (Why does he say it like that????)

-“Granite” asks Coach Mack if Blaze Soares is going to play this season. Coach Mack says Blaze hasn’t missed a practice and is doing very well and knows the fans are EXCITED about him playing again and is excited because Blaze was away from the game for a season and says Soares hits like Ray Lewis and Jeff Ulbrich and has no doubt Soares will “play on Sundays”. Bobby mentions how Blaze has good football instincts and Coach says the difference between a good linebacker and a GREAT LB is just focused on tackling the guy with the football as opposed to worrying about who to block, etc…

-Bobby asks about Coach Tormey. Coach Mack says he’s known Tormey for a long time and that he knows how to win and he’s done a great job teaching technique during the spring and the fall. Coach Mack mentions Lucas Ingram and jokes that he (Coach Mack) is coaching Alex Dunnachie one on one… 😆 Coach Mack says the punting game is going to be good, but mentions that both Lucas and Alex have NEVER had anyone rush them in a game situation YET. Coach says “if they can work through that first real game snap ok, then the rest of the season will be pretty good for both of them.”

-Caller asks Coach Mack if he prefers to start a game with defense on the field first or the offense. Coach Mack says he prefers to have the offense on the field in the second half as it’s a feeling-out process in UH’s advantage if we win the coin toss and defer. So Coach Mack says that if we win a coin toss, expect us to defer.

    ***commercial break***

  183. chawan_cut September 1, 2009 6:58 pm

1st Call The Coach Show of 2009 notes (continued):

***back from commercial break with more calls***

-Dominic asks Coach about Bryant Moniz and if he will play at all this season. Coach Mack says Moniz has “it” and expects Moniz to contribute in the years to come. Coach Mack expects Moniz to join the travel roster since they can take 3 QBs and says Moniz beat out a “good player” in Shane Austin and that Austin too can win games for us down the line.

-Caller asks what Coach Mack is concerned about UCA. Coach Mack says that UCA is a dangerous team and that says they have a lot of guys back and mentions their 10 wins last season and that he expects them to keep our offense off the field and says that in 2007 when we needed OT to beat LaTech, LaTech was taken to the limit by UCA also. Coach expects UCA to further advance and does acknowledge that they will be a bigger challenge than some people expect and says that we need to play our game plan to perfection to start the season right.

-Bobby asks Coach Mack about # 9 Larry Hart and how he reminds him of former Georgia DE Marcus Howard. Coach Mack compares him to John Fonoti instead and says Hart gets moved around a lot in UCA’s defensive scheme and is very quick. Coach Mack says that UCA’s secondary is “very good” and has players that can go man-man on people and says some of them are D1 quality and that UCA has most of their defense back and says again they will be a real test.

-Bobby asks Coach Mack about the “new” speed at the wideout positions. Coach Mack says Jovonte Taylor and Rodney Bradley provide the speed outside necessary to give more room for Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares, Jon Medieros, and Dustin Blount on the inside. Coach Mack says he believes we have EIGHT receivers that can contribute as opposed to last season in which he felt there was only one or two.

-Bobby asks Coach Mack if they will still rotate 8 receivers. Coach Mack says the best 4 of the 8 will see action 80% of the time. Coach Mack says “this ain’t PE football” and won’t play people just for the sake of playing.

-Bobby asks about Alex Green’s position on the “depth chart”. Coach Mack says that last season was a scramble at ALL postions and that Ron Lee had to do a good job of winning 7 games considering their personnel issues. Coach says that this season we can run the ball. Says that LWJ is healthy. Says that Inoke Funaki says that he can make people miss and can pass out of the “wild cat”. Says that Coach Smith is doing a good job with the HBs. Coach Mack also credits Coach Shaw with the run blocking schemes and expects the run game to advance significantly this season.

1st Call The Coach Show of 2009 notes (continued):

    ***back from commercial***

-Coach Mack says that John McNamara really worked hard to create deals and discounts for the fans for this Friday’s game and says IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE PEOPLE TO COME OUT BECAUSE THE PLAYERS FEED OFF THAT ENERGY. COACH MACK SAYS “WE NEED TO PROTECT THIS HOUSE”!!!!!!!!!!

-Warren thanks Coach Mack for having Junior Day this past off season and says his (Warren) son really enjoyed it and says it showed UH was a classy program for doing it. Warren asks Coach Mack about the secondary. Coach Mack says that they are young and that we need success early to get their confidence up. Coach Mack says that the duo of Coach Tormey and Miano are providing good coaching and teaching them. Coach Mack says that this team is the most “coachable” team he’s had in a while.

-Craig asks Coach Mack about the football facilities. Coach Mack says that the new turf on Ching Field was a blessing and that the ROTC UH and UH band uses it and how great it is. Coach Mack says that the MONEY IS IN FOR THE FOOTBALL OFFICES AND WILL START NEXT MONTH!!! Coach Mack says that part of the $100,000.00 from Budweiser went towards academic counciling for the football team.

1st Call The Coach Show of 2009 notes:

    (Last segment)

    ***back from commercial***

-Brandon asks Coach Mack about 4th quarter decisions with regards to a running game. Coach Mack says last season they were “eeking out” some wins and it depends on the situation. Coach Mack says we’ll still use the pass to set up the run, but it just depends on the situation. Coach Mack mentions the Washington State game last season and how we could of scored more, but they just wanted to win the game and remains solid on not really running up the score on anyone.

-Bobby asks Coach Mack if he expects to see more nickle and dime packages this season. Coach Mack says if he does, he’ll have no problem sending our HBs out there to run it.

-Randy calls in to mention how he has appreciated how Coach Mack has changed the recruiting attitude and reputation of the program and thanks Coach Mack for being the person he is.

    -PAU!!!

  190. Justin September 1, 2009 7:24 pm

I think Coach Mack meant that Aaron Brown won’t be playing much linebacker this week against UCA because he is still learning the position. Instead, he’ll play mainly at the nickel this game.

  191. Jason September 1, 2009 7:24 pm

Thanks Kazz, I totally forgot so I only caught the last five minutes.

Hmmm… In retrospect, it’s hard for me to imagine where Shane Austin is right now on the “depth chart”. I believe he got a schollie now, but with all the respect in the world to Bryant Moniz, I didn’t think that Austin would find himself in this position.

I always thought that Shane Austin reminded me of Tyler Graunke (FOOTBALL WISE!!!). To me their footwork looked the same and both threw the ball and made their decisions with emphasis. Last season I quietly expected Shane Austin to become the 2nd QB.

I’ve got a terrible memory. Today, a woman walked into my class after school. She’s the sister-in-law of a friend, but I had no clue who she was for around three or four minutes while we were talking—and she was trying to explain to me who she was!

Right now, I only have around 1/3 of my students’ faces identified with their names. It’s hard, I’m not that smart … 🙁

Great job with the recap! Thank you very much for typing all that up for those of us who couldn’t listen to the show!

  200. Garret September 1, 2009 7:40 pm

Glad to hear that Fonoti just has a bruise, as that means he should be fine soon. Ideally he wouldn’t need to play that much against UCA, as that would give the backups more game experience…especially since he has other aches that kept him out of so many practices recently.

  201. W.M September 1, 2009 7:41 pm

    Thank you Kazz!

Central Arkansas will bus from Conway to Dallas tomorrow and then take a flight to Honolulu.

Clint Conque and his Central Arkansas Bears are busing to Dallas on Wednesday before boarding a direct flight to paradise for their season opener. The Conway school plays Hawaii on Friday night — in a game that will start around midnight Central time.

This is Central Arkansas’ fourth season in Division I, and the Bears still aren’t eligible for the postseason. This game was scheduled as a reward for the players who signed on with the program when it first moved up from Division II.

  203. Garret September 1, 2009 7:45 pm

Bess appears to be running third out of the 3 receivers in the competition at Miami…that would be a worst-case scenario since that would mean that he wouldn’t start at WR and he might not even have the slot receiver position. If Hartline wins the starting WR spot, Bess might not play (Camarillo is ahead for the slot position)…if Camarillo starts, then Bess should hopefully get the slot position.

Greg Camarillo and Brian Hartline both worked intermittently with the first team at practice Tuesday, raising the possibility that it still might be premature to anoint Hartline as the starter in Atlanta 12 days from now.

Camarillo, whose work has been limited in preseason games due to his ongoing rehab from a torn ACL last November, had a 52-yard catch-and-run on a short out pattern last Thursday in Tampa Bay. But overall he’s worked primarily with the second team while Hartline, who had a 54-yard reception in the same game, has mostly been with the first team.

  204. Garret September 1, 2009 7:46 pm

Finally some positive press for Samson. The San Francisco Chronicle analyzed the changes the Raiders made this offseason:

    Center

In: Samson Satele. He’s a younger version of former starter Jake Grove, only he has far healthier knees and less wear and tear.

Out: Grove. He’s an older version of Satele, only with less healthy knees and more wear and tear.

  205. Garret September 1, 2009 7:47 pm

Jake Ingram found out that he won the long snapper position with the Patriots via a text message from his kicker.

Rookie long snapper Jake Ingram received the news via text message from kicker Stephen Gostkowski on Sunday night: Veteran long snapper Nathan Hodel would be cut, and Ingram had won the job, claiming a victory in one of the most tightly-contested position battles in training camp.

“I just realize the task at hand, and I know I have a lot of work to do,” Ingram said. “That’s all I can really think about, coming in here ready to go to work and have a positive attitude.”

  206. Garret September 1, 2009 7:51 pm

Bill Belichick said that Ingram was prepared well before he joined New England.

“I think that he was fairly polished in all the areas,” Belichick said. “Long snapping, short snapping, protection, other things in the punting game, on releasing, and coverage. I also think he’s improved in each of those areas.”

    Re-The Coaches Show

ST and Leila should do the coaches show.

That was unbearable. Thanks to BC for overseeing no direction to the show it was miserable listening to the show.

If BC replicated the way ST and Leila do their show, like limiting one question and a short hello would suffice and would make the Call The Coach Show a lot better.

I can see callers expressing a cursory hello, thank you coach and good luck in the upcoming season…and then get onto the question quickly.

But nope. BC show tonight, listeners go on and on with an overload of glorification towards the coach. Enough. My gosh let’s squeeze in more football questions instead of tributes. Gees.

Clarence TC Ching Field is where I bounced like a golf ball hitting concrete when first tackled on Monsanto’s 2nd iteration of Astro-Turf (mahalo to Jeris White and Yasuo Yorita for my intro to taking college hits). It was Cooke Field at the time and remained so until the past year.
It was called Cooke Field but the Ching Foundation made a generous donation for upgrades and received naming rights. This was done in good faith as the Cooke heirs were asked first if it was all right.
Cooke Field is now the grass practice field and will be so marked with a dedicated plaque marking the name on the side of the field.

Yes- M/M A-House – watch the game on tv after you get home. Just enjoy the sidelines! Watching the rhythm of dee guys is cool. When Kekoa and I were there, we were able to see them come off the field and immediately start planning and making adjustments for the next series.

Hey Everyone! Can’t wait for Friday night. Ronnie reminded me the game starts at 10 pm PST. Will have the arm warmed up with accurate completions of green bottles. Will there be any broadcast the mainlanders can watch, or are we tuning into Oceanic?

Re: Fires – All is well where I live, but the entire San Fernando Valley was covered in a smog-like smokey haze. Fires are about 10 miles from the house, in a canyon so I’m not worried at all.

Heard from Faye today. She will try and make it to the K-Call Friday night. Now, we need our blog host, “Ferd”, and the Princess there.

Friday the 18th will be a long day – golf tournament at 7 a.m. and partying w/ the Tsaikos well into Saturday morning…lol…

SteveM – I’ve changed my hotel plans from the Venetian to Harrah’s. Harrah’s offered me $350 for Travel Expenses. All I need to do is go to the Total Rewards counter and they give me cash. No receipts needed…

For any Tsaikos still lingering around in Vegas on Sunday, I’m not going back to L.A. until Monday so we can keep celebrating the victory over them darn Rebels. Don’t feel like dealing with Sunday traffic.

Okay, that’s it. Been swamped w/ work….laters gang!

    Re-The Coaches Show

I know somewhere out there in football land somebody else besides myself that was listening to the show was probably perplexed at one of Coach Mack’s responses.

When Coach Mack asserts his reasons as to hiring Coach Shaw as the O-Line coach basically it’s the same of what we’ve heard before: Coach Shaw coached at one time at a big time program, Minnesota. And would be a nice fit for UH.

If he was wise that should have been the extent of his answer.

But then he goes on and adds that he wanted to go out and find the best available O-Line coach out there, especially he noted one that coached an Outland and Remington winner as he thought it would be beneficial to Estes this year.

There’s no rebuking Coach Mack hiring Coach Shaw.

But if his mindset was to go out and find the best O-Line coach this year then why didn’t he follow his philosophy last year when he hired Smith, who at that time had 1 year (of below par) D-1 coaching? And if he had shopped around he probably could have snagged Coach Shaw his first year instead of being influenced probably into hiring Smith because he had ties to UH.

  224. gmahoney- haha! BINGO! C’mon ladies- you KNOW you know what your blog names are already. 😎 One year is too long to wait. Just DO IT! And come hang out with us before and after the game!

RGM is getting first-team reps at WR now! It sounds like he lost his confidence after dropping some passes when the season began, but he put in extra work and he’s back to his old self.

When the Dreadhead’s confidence failed him after a serious of drops, Buono shrewdly moved Grice-Mullen to returning duties to tap some of that game-turning potential. It’s worked out splendidly.

Now, Buono’s fantasy difference-maker could be ready to make some noise as a wide receiver, judging by the inordinate number of first-team reps he’s getting this week in practice.

“We’ll see when game time comes,” says Grice-Mullen, looking ahead to Friday’s game against Montreal. “I feel good. I feel back to my normal self. I was just in a slump, just like any basketball or baseball player. It does happen. I feel I’m out of it now.”

Weeks of remedial training, working with backup quarterback Travis Lulay after practice and fielding punts from Sean White during practice breaks, seem to have cured him of the dropsies.

“He came up to me and asked if I would stick around for some extra work,” Lulay says. “It was big of Ryan. He knew he wanted to improve. He’s a laid-back, quiet guy. But the desire to really be good is there.”

RE: Coaches’ Offices comment on the Call The Coach Show.

Coach Mack said September, which is now, so according to his comments, construction will actually begin this month.

Unless, the painfully long process of “designing and bidding” hasn’t even started yet.

You can easily see into that unfinished 3rd floor wing that is to be the coaches’ offices soon and it’s still mostly empty with random desks, chairs, and some computers just sitting there in no particular arrangement. I remember JD on sportshawaii mentioning a “timetable” of sorts and without looking back at his comments I think September 2009 is about right.

    I’ve got a terrible memory. ……

Right now, I only have around 1/3 of my students’ faces identified with their names. It’s hard, I’m not that smart …

Jason — this indicates to me that you have good students. 🙂

    ARE YOU READYYYYYYYYY TO RUMBLE

    GO WARRIORS

  270. letsgowarriors September 2, 2009 3:47 am

i know what Ching Field is. i jsut find it ridiculous that mack cant do an interview without making some type of mistake with someones name. he called it the Clarence “C.T.” Ching Field. i mean cmon, this Foundation donated millions to get this Field done, and he cant even get the name right. public speaking nerves maybe?

i know everyone is gonna hate on me for this, but mack needs to be held accountable for his speakin actions. at some point, he needs to stop messing up.

  271. Hiya!
    Fell asleep.
    Woke up.
Nitey nite and Sweet Warrior Dreams!

  272. ???
Mack is not a public speaker by choice but by necessity.

I get brain farts all the time and I cannot even comprehend the language of the Warrior playbook, never mind comprehend what it took to be the author or modifier of it…

It’s like holding a person accountable for typos when they have to post on the fly.

I give Coach Mack a pass on Ching Field.

    WINNING SEASON FOR THE WARRIORS!!!

  273. letsgowarriors September 2, 2009 3:59 am

typos like jsut? but we not talking about remembering the other team’s players names or their stadium names or some type of vocabulary word hes trying to use in a sentence.

we talkin bout our own players, our own recruits and our own practice field.

but yes, get us a winning season and no one will care about that kind of stuff. 3 more days…

  274. Ralph September 2, 2009 4:58 am

Pomai that is a problem with Hawaii sports, they don’t stick to a color scheme to make it a tradition like Wisconsin – everyone wears red, or K-State everyone wears purple but each school has another color but chose one specific color for all their games. Pick’um- Green or White for all sports for every home game.forever.

  275. Garret September 2, 2009 5:47 am

This article mentions Alex Dunnachie…someone appears to be exaggerating a little bit on the expected crowd at Aloha Stadium on Friday.

Like 18-year-old former Marcellin College student Alex Dunnachie, from Heidelberg, who only a year ago was playing school footy on Friday afternoons and with the Banyule club on weekends, but who this weekend plays his first college football game for the University of Hawaii at its spectacular Aloha Stadium in front of an expected crowd of 60,000.

Dunnachie has obviously made a quick impression on Hawaii’s coach Chris Tormey. He said: ”He has tremendous ability and I think he’s going to develop into an outstanding player.”

  276. djmitcho September 2, 2009 5:50 am

Good Morning All!! Another day closer to kickoff. That’s good news about Fonoti

  277. d1島 September 2, 2009 6:00 am

    IS IT FRIDAY YET?!?!?!?!

  284. bighilofan2 September 2, 2009 6:23 am

Many props to Coach Mack for recognizing his obligations to Hawaii. He is making us a better team; he brought in Coaches Tormey, Shaw and MSmith. The coaching staff appears to be jelling; that has been my impression since last April. Time will tell if my optimism is well founded. I have hope, and I want to encourage the coaches to keep on their toes.
UCA can ruin my good vibes, so I wanna do what I can to “shove” the coaches in the right direction.

    kekoa,
    howzit. now about dat tip….
    lemme finish da sentence.
    …shut what?

  285. whitey September 2, 2009 6:43 am

Good morning Tsaikos, Warriors, and Wahines. Hoooooooo, going be a weekend of fun, fun, fun at UH. I would love to have join the fun for the weekend, but will be in Jake Huen’s country.

  286. whitey September 2, 2009 6:46 am

bhf2, i see you chomping at the bits and can’t wait to bring your sampan to the city. i can see you at the game (all green outfit) “encouraging” mr and mrs a house, giving the refs some advise, shaking the ti leaves. YOU DA MAN!!!!!!

  287. whitey September 2, 2009 6:48 am

bhf2, with you kazz and chawan, no need worry about the cheering, cause you guys going make nuff noise for everyone!!! YEAH!!!!!

  288. whitey September 2, 2009 6:48 am

ok, time to go, play nice, and see you all later.

  289. royvic September 2, 2009 6:55 am

    letsgowarriors,

I agree with you. And he should be admonished for making that type of mistake. Screwing up with people’s and player’s names and then brushing it off with that raspy laugh is deserving of him being exposed.

I do know without even trying…Coach Mack does a mean…George W. Bush impression. The more I listen to Coach Mack I see this resemblance.

  290. Pomai September 2, 2009 6:57 am

    #276 Ralph

That’s not the real problem the real problem is that they do not in any way have the right person doing the marketing (no not stretch’s kind) there are so many ways that they are not doing things that would result in more $$$ for all of the programs.

  291. Pomai September 2, 2009 7:03 am

royvic and letsgowarriors maybe it’s just me but who care’s if he gets the name right or even his slip that cost him all the $$$$, all I want the guys to do is win games, win the WAC, win a BcS bowl and then the NC. Now that’s not too much to ask for is it, so coach as far as I am concerned have all the slips you want “just win baby”

  292. Garret September 2, 2009 7:10 am

It is great that Pisa is already a fan favorite in Chicago. I still remember him playing for UH.

Linebacker is a definite strength of this 2009 version of the Chicago Bears. Lance Briggs is a perennial Pro Bowler, Brian Urlacher is one of the better middle backers in the game, and newly named starting strongside LB Pisa Tinoisamoa has me wondering what the Rams were thinking in releasing him. Tinoisamoa (does this guy have a nickname yet) has quickly become a fan favorite. His speed and big hits have endured him to the fans, and his versatility (he played weakside LB in the past) could pay dividends in the long run.

  293. bighilofan2 September 2, 2009 7:13 am

    letsgowarriors.
    royvic (ufunnyman)

    okay, truth serum time.

    i agree with you two.

but like somebody reminded me the other day right here….
give the guy a mulligan, he deserves it.

an maybe i don’t agree with that one too.
but i do agree that the whole picture includes us here.
so i bite my tongue. an no hammajang da operations.
well, i taut i was bitin my tongue until big bradda wen give me da “shut…” vibes. 😆

agreed, when you drop down dat kine kala, and day asking you fo mowah, show me da money kine action, at least day gotta get yo name right.

  294. letsgowarriors September 2, 2009 7:14 am

i guess you dont think its embarrassing that our head coach cant get our own practice field right…doesnt know what manti te’o looks like…rumors of him calling chad lopati by the wrong name on his recruiting visit…not sure if the last one is true.

being bad at public speakin is one thing. that faggot blurb is fine in my book, honest mistake. we all fumble our words and say inappropriate things. but this recurring theme of not getting names straight aint good. when manti’s dad first brought up the recruiting incident, i brushed it off. i thought it was an honest mistake by mack. hopefully im blowing things out of proportion and it doesnt happen often.

yeah have all the slip ups you want but just win…im hoping he does win this season.

  295. bighilofan2 September 2, 2009 7:18 am

  299. haka September 2, 2009 7:27 am

    Just my two cents.

My dad abused to always girble his words, mix up his names and call him’s, her’s and she’s, he and it was embracing at times, but he was still a great dad and great person. He wasn’t a pubic speaker though and I understand there is a big difference in being a father and a mother. Sometimes Jim Leahy frustrates me, but he is “the voice of UH sports”. He has been doing it for a long time and as far as I am concerned, he can do what he does for as long as he wants.

As far as Coach Mack is concerned, I don’t think he is Bush league.

    1. “I want to thank the President and the CEO of Constellation Energy, Mayo Shattuck. That’s a pretty cool first name, isn’t it, Mayo. Pass the Mayo. His wife, Molly, appreciated that.”

    2. “And so, in my State of the – my State of the Union – or state – my speech to the – nation, whatever you wanna call it, speech to the nation – I asked Americans to give 4,000 years – 4,000 hours over the next – of the rest of your life – of service to America. That’s what I asked. I said 2 – 4,000 hours.”

3.”You bet I cut the taxes at the top. That encourages entrepreneurship. What we Republicans should stand for is growth in the economy. We ought to make the pie higher.”

4.”We got an issue in America. Too many good docs are gettin’ out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren’t able to practice their – their love with women all across this country.”

5.”There’s an old saying in Tennessee, I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, fool me once, shame on, shame on you. You fool me, you can’t get fooled again.” (I’m from Texas, and nope, that’s not even close!)

6.”I can press when there needs to be pressed. I can hold hands when there needs to be hold hands.”

7.”Uhh I hear there’s rumors on the, uhh, Internets that we’re gonna have a draft. We’re not going to have a draft. Period.”

8.”Yo, Harper! The President of Nigeria.”

9.”I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.”

    10. “There, it’s, you know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror.”

    11. “You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test.”

    12. “As yesterday’s positive report card shows, childrens do learn when standards are high and results are measured.”

    13. “The illiteracy level of our children are appalling.”

Football is here and we are going to need all the positive vibes we can get! Let’s fill the stadium and do our part in support!

    Go Warriors!
    Imua!

  300. Pomai September 2, 2009 7:31 am

letsgowarriors, to me no it’s not embarrassing but that just me and my opinion is just that mine, oh yeah it would be nice if he had all the right names and all of that but heck I ain’t going to lose any sleep if he mispronounces my name or where i’m from or stuff like that. Now what will make me lose some sleep is if we lose to Arkansas or any other team, I want wins, I want to see the boys holding up that WAC trophy nor that big one with “National Champion” on it, yeah I know some may think I’m dreaming, but hey if you don’t think big you will never be big. GO MACK get that win.

  301. Ronnie September 2, 2009 7:34 am

Since I can’t make it to the Washington State game, does anyone want my ticket – in the Tsaiko section? Just let me know.

How many people in this Blog know the first, middle (or initials) names of people like Mr. Waterhouse or Mr. Cooke.

As for that matter, the first, middle (or initials) of Mr. Bolte – who gave Na Koa a residuary gift valued at 2.2 million this past year?

Just wondering whether a rose by any other name (or initials) would smell just as fair?

  309. tommui September 2, 2009 8:03 am

    And good morning to all!

    Go Warriors!

  310. haka September 2, 2009 8:05 am

    MAHALO Mr. Bolte!

  311. Pomai September 2, 2009 8:37 am

tommui speaking of initials your middle one wouldn’t be L would it??

  312. tommui September 2, 2009 8:37 am

Of course in all fairness, there are six or seven Clarence Chings in the phone book (probably a bunch that are not listed) and the initials would identify the specific Clarence Ching.

You wouldn’t want to credit the field to Clarence XYZ Ching!

  313. tommui September 2, 2009 8:40 am

POMAI: Yes it is “L” but if you threw in the Chinese one, it would also include YM.

My granddaughter has a middle name, a Chinese one and a Hawaiian one and I’m sure when it comes to Baptism, you would need an extra amount of water!

morning excited warrior tsaiko fans. two more days then kick off babe whotah

reminder for tgate this friday. a few of us will be setting up the old cabana and getting ready for the tsaikos. we have located all the necessary items need for pot luck (plates, forks, chop stick but need help with paper towel and foil). have the cooking tools (2 tongs, cutting board and knife) we could use another board and knife). jj, homey, and frank will be there by 10:30. arriving around 12 will be sj, myki, kekoa, pops, diana, bg, betty, ralph. things are looking good. reminder to after 4pm arrivals please bring you tgate food cooked so we don’t have to keep the fire going. we would like to clean up between 5 and 6 then walk to the stadium with everyone else. bring coolers to help store the left overs.

check the blog for any new changes. thanks

good to hear fonoti isn’t seriously injured. should keep him out to let leg get stronger. need him for the season instead of the opener. think long term .

reading article about maryknoll’s new school/community fitness center. very nice and looking good. only question what is the parking capacity and where is it?

  317. Kekoa September 2, 2009 9:00 am

The Bolte’s were a nice n’ neat little family that excepted the gratitude of JD and VH for their really big 2.2 million dollar donation…and quietly disappeared. This very short 15 seconds of fame at half-time during the homecoming game last year was not nearly what I expected.

No wonder we don’t see as many of these sizable donations very often. UH officials don’t know how to show their appreciation for these sizable donations. We don’t even know what it was used for!

Trump it up! Tell the world! Give credence to what they donated for goodness sake! It’s 2.2 bills!…who has that kind of money to give away in this economy?? Auwe UH!

  318. d1島 September 2, 2009 9:01 am

    What about the leaf blower?
    😆

  319. d1島 September 2, 2009 9:05 am

    Kekoa,

Maybe UH has stepped into the new millenium…instead of 15 minutes of fame, they’ve stepped it up and made it seconds!
At least the family made it on CCTV in the stadium so folks could see them while they were in line for soda and hotdogs…. 🙄

  320. koakane™ September 2, 2009 9:05 am

d1 too dry like you mentioned so no need bwhaaaaaaaaaaaa

“I just feel so fortunate, so blessed to have (a senior) season. I’m going all out. I’m gonna bring it ’cause there are only so many guys that get to play Division I football each year. And, I get to represent the state of Hawai’i. I’m one lucky person.”

  322. Garret September 2, 2009 9:15 am

Colt started the preseason hoping to compete for the #2 QB job, and now he has one game to try to keep the #3 QB job. He’s dealing with it well and not making excuses, but he has to be unhappy about how things have gone this preseason.

After gaining cult-hero status as a rookie, Brennan was eager to challenge longtime No. 2 quarterback Todd Collins for the position as Jason Campbell’s primary backup. But the supposed competition never unfolded because Collins continued to be a steady veteran and Brennan struggled throughout the preseason.

As the Redskins prepare to play their final preseason game Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Brennan is in a fight with rookie quarterback Chase Daniel to retain the No. 3 job he held last season. The swagger Brennan displayed before camp and preseason has been replaced by outward humility, which has been a refreshing change to some in the organization who thought the kid used to be way too arrogant for someone who had accomplished, well, nothing.

“It’s tough,” he said. “Obviously, you’re right, this isn’t where I thought I would be. But that’s football sometimes. Right now, I just have to realize the situation I’m in. When I look back, I’m not embarrassed. I’m not bummed out about my play at all. No matter what happens, I’m going to be able to take away a lot. I got a chance to play against the [New England] Patriots’ No. 1 defense and moved the ball. I’ve gotten a lot out of this preseason. Maybe the end results or the stats are not what I wanted. But everything I’ve wanted to gain through this preseason I’ve gained. No matter what happens, I know I’ll be able to learn from this, grow and progress as an NFL quarterback.

“I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. I could sat there and made excuses up. I could have sat there and pointed the finger and tried to take some of the blame off me. I didn’t. I took it all in stride. … I think part of being a quarterback in the NFL is going through adversity and how you handle that. And I’ve shown anything this preseason, is that I can handle adversity pretty well and not really get discouraged by not having success. I’ve battled back and I have one more chance to battle back this Thursday.”

  323. tommui September 2, 2009 9:36 am

KEKOA: Re your #319. Jim Donovan went out of his way to visit Mr. Bolte when JD was in Reno – Bolte lives about 1.5 hours away from Reno.

He has physical limitations and somewhat confined to his area and JD took the time to drive down there.

It was a shame that he could not be present at the Homecoming Game when his son/daughter-in-law and grandchildren took the field to present the check.

I’m trying to get UH to honor him in some fashion while he is still around to appreciate it – maybe a soap dispenser or ST’s favorite water fountain?

POMAI – re: 317 – I hope it was OK or should I vanish into my other blog identities?

  324. Kekoa (iPhone) September 2, 2009 9:43 am

Once again there’ll be HI-5 recycling drives at the home game T-Gates. The first recipient at the Friday, September 4, game will be the Na Koa Equipment Fund.

The bin(s) will be set out no around 10 am and all the recyclables will be stored during the breakdown before the opening ceremonies at Aloha Stadium. Most of the time, there’ll be additional collections at the post-game parties as well.

Bring eligible bottles and cans in any quantity from home to donate as well as what you’ll be drinking this Friday.

Remember, we’ll pick up quantities in excess of 250 containers anywhere on O`ahu on Saturday provided that arrangements are made no later than the Friday afternoon since we’ll probably have to borrow a truck.

I was told not to set out a donation jar in which to drop your spare change because it will conflict with another drive going on at the same time. Therefore, we’ll make sure that information sheets are available for those of you who want to make a contribution to any of the seven different funddrives or organizations on your own.

ALL of the redemption fees will be made on behalf of the Tsaikos & will be sent to the designated recipients within 48 – 72 hours of each T-Gate. Mahalo in advance for supporting these youth, high school, and UH athletic programs.
