Its early at Manoa… Warriors slowly filing onto the field for practice. DBs are already fully suited and going over drills with Coach Miano.

  2. Jason August 25, 2009 6:28 am

There are a few surprises here and there with the depth chart for me, but then again, I only saw one real practice and a walkthrough. I guess that just goes to show what kind of depth we have. There are a few folks listed at #2 or #3 who really impressed me in the spring and on Friday. I’m sure they’ll get on the field anyways.

  3. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 6:29 am

Can Aaron Rink redshirt this season? All fall camp he was not suited up but was present.

  4. Annoddah Dave August 25, 2009 6:29 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Question for Heather: A coach’s spouse is certainly a special breed…what characteristics have made it easier to tolerate the constant moves, the frustrations of the job the coach brings home, the tending to players, and maintaining a normal family life?

  5. bb August 25, 2009 6:30 am

finally i can update my ncaa 10 roster and start playing my UH dynasty….

  6. Kekoa August 25, 2009 6:31 am

    Kazz (from the old post)

Are you contemplating ‘Roast Duck’ for a future T-gate?…also…
will you be back to the Wessai for CC @ Golden Coin at noon?

  7. royvic August 25, 2009 6:31 am

I read an article on Michelle Wie. And the author of the article (somewhere in yahoo sports) writes that throughout Michelle’s career she has had a lot of naysayers and cynics. For the argument against her is that she hasn’t accomplished anything. And she ascended onto the LPGA with such stardom.

The author agrees, saying it’s warranted for the naysayers and cynics to act like the way they do.

Reading message boards the schools of thoughts are to give her chance because she is so young, only nineteen. These are the Wie supporters talking.

After reading this article I couldn’t help but think this thought: I see the exact same correlation between Wie and the Warriors, for they are both are revered, highly esteemed and heralded.

And until they perform to a championship standards they will, in the interim, always being challenged by the naysayers and cynics by their skepticism in rising to the top.

Personally I think challenging Wie or the Warriors in getting better is a good thing.

I think for Wie, or any athlete, or any team or coach in feeling the heat from the naysayers and cynics in performing at a higher level isn’t a bad thing.

I think the Yankees, Red Sox and the Florida Gators are where they are today because of the feverishness of the supporters scrutinizing their every move.

I don’t agree with the though that since the Warriors are the only team in town then by default we should blindly support them because if you do then you’d always be selling yourself short.

What I rather see are newspaper columnists in this town, sometimes, and only when it warranted, to write with venom against the home team because I think it gets better results, like it does in ever other town that has a championship team.

  8. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 6:33 am

Jason, yeah depth is good. Judging from seasons past under Coach Mack, whoever is bracketed in #2 spots on defense, especially the front four, will see playing time.

  9. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 6:37 am

Jake Heun is running from the locker rooms to the practice field.

To quote an ESPN analyst when he was describing some attempting to tackle West Keliikipi… “Why would you wanna tackle that?”

(Notice how he says “that” and not “him”… 😯

  10. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 6:39 am

    Kekoa,

Probably won’t make it at noon today. Got an appointment at 11ish in town.

  11. rage777 August 25, 2009 6:39 am

    Coachette McMackin,

Have you ever drawn up a play? If so, has the Coach ever used it or tried to use it?

  12. Kekoa August 25, 2009 6:43 am

K’den Kazz…enjoy practice & tanks for da report!

  13. rage777 August 25, 2009 6:43 am

I like our O-line, I can’t wait to see Ray in action.

  14. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 6:44 am

Coach Mack just walked onto the field with a big smile on his face as he greets the linebacking corps one by one as they warm up near the entrance.

Oline is stretching in the far endzone.

    Dline already pounding da bags.

John Fonoti kicks a trash can used for drills as he makes his way to one of the drills. Somewhere, an offensive lineman for Central Arkansas just shivered and he doesn’t know why.

The Warriors look ready and FOCUSED.

  15. Loa August 25, 2009 6:48 am

    morning gang!

thanks for the depth chart, lots of talent on both sides, just gotta play together when the lights go on

  16. Loa August 25, 2009 6:49 am

Kazz – mahalo for the reports, keep’em coming

  17. rage777 August 25, 2009 6:52 am

    Mrs. McMackin,

Do you say tell the ladies anything about Super Bowl Sunday, and how they shouldn’t be bothering the men? Do you tell them that they should just sit down and enjoy the game/commercials?

  18. Pomai August 25, 2009 6:53 am

Actually I think this is one home opener that will tell the story of how our season will unfold.

  19. Aloha Kakahiaka!

No need venom for venom’s sake in the press. There is enough divisiveness as it is.

Good morning Tsaikos. Thanks for the updates on practice Kazz.

  22. Kekoa August 25, 2009 7:01 am

    Aloha Mrs. Mack!

Q: What was it like for you to plan this year’s clinic in terms of preparation, and what is your primary focus?

BTW ~ You will have some real *star* students in attendance. Just ask by a show of hands, how many of you are Tsaikettes?!…(keep your hand down homey!)

  23. If you like spot venom to get readers- Kauai newspaper did a pretty good job in 2007.

  24. whitey August 25, 2009 7:05 am

Kazz, i know what you were trying to say, but others may not, so that is why i just wanted you to know that what was posted was not coming out correctly. you are one of the biggest fan of UH and most of us know it, but some may not. go warriors!!!!!

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid August 25, 2009 7:07 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Depth chart looks good. Emphasis is on “depth”. Let’s play ball!

    Kazz-
You really need your own gig! 😆

  26. Loa August 25, 2009 7:07 am

    Coach Heather

congrats on the success of the Wahine Football Clinic!

what are you and your family enjoying the most here in the islands?

  27. djmitcho August 25, 2009 7:08 am

Good Morning All! Hope everyone has a good day. Still surprised with some of the bracketing in the depth chart. Maybe that just says something about the level of talent and depth this team has.

  28. Pomai August 25, 2009 7:09 am

whitey he’s got more UH gear than anyone else I know that’s for sure.

  29. haka August 25, 2009 7:09 am

    Royvic #7
Good point. Like all things, balance is the key. Yin and Yang, even in criticism and support. Remember though, venom can be the cure or the demise. You may not have to be venomous to make a point, just have a bite.

  30. whitey August 25, 2009 7:11 am

  31. Kekoa August 25, 2009 7:13 am

John Fonoti kicks a trash can used for drills as he makes his way to one of the drills. Somewhere, an offensive lineman for Central Arkansas just shivered and he doesn’t know why.

…and while they are shivering in their shoes, E. Purcell will be crashing in from the left end – destroying everything in his path!

  32. The TRUTH will set you free. May sting like venom but not poisonous.

  33. letsgowarriors August 25, 2009 7:16 am

man we really need to get a true FS. too bad wadsworth is going on a mission.

  34. Coach Heather – Should we bring anything special besides good walking shoes tomorrow night? Pens, notebooks, etc.

  35. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 7:26 am

LWJ hitting da holes with more “umph” than previous years. They’re working 11 on 11s to my left as the scout teams seem to be working da game plan against UCA to my right.

The 11 on 11s to my right are mostly running plays at this time.

  36. lava August 25, 2009 7:29 am

I’m not buying the Wie = Warriors analogy and the argument we should dump on a poorly performing collegiate team, Royvic.

Re leadership, McMackin has gone out of his way to shake hands and a kind word with everyone, hires great people and then let’s the coaches coach; team Wie is cold and aloof and alienates nearly everyone (from players to swing coaches to sports agent to the LPGA), abd micromanages things top to bottom, with pathetic daddy Wie even donning caddy carb to help line up puts (and he doesn’t even know the caddy rules).

Re criticism, Wie (and the Yankees and Red Sox) are professionals, doing what they supposedly love to do for many of the almighty dollars, and have the benefit of a army of people helping them. The Warriors are struggling college students that have a ton of obstacles in front of them. If you view academics as a job and football as a second job, consider many Warriors must take a third job — probably low paying — to help pay the bills. And when a tired John Fonoti goes home at night, he has some poopy diapers waiting for him.

I’ve seen Wie on the range and the Warriors at practices, and I’m happy to criticize Wie all day long, when it is deserved, but there is something much more human about the Warriors, and they are doing their best. That is all we can ask of amateur athletes.

The attitude you are fostering is dangerous, and if you had played organized sports at the high school or college level you would know better. Think about it.

  37. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 7:31 am

Lots of detailed walk thru type of instruction with the 1st and 2nd team defense with the scout offense in preparation for UCA right now.

  38. Maynard G. Krebs August 25, 2009 7:33 am

LizKauai: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you flee?”

KAZZ: You’re OK!!! Getting up so early and posting the reports on the practice. Thanks!

    Good morning Hawaii!

  39. Hoohiki August 25, 2009 7:36 am

    Coach Heather,

Other than using Coach McMackin as your resource for your football clinic, what other resources have you used to obtain your materials for your talk?

  40. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 7:43 am

Greg Alexander just went deep twice to Jovonte Taylor with the latter resulting in a runaway TD.

    J. Taylor… Who’s gonna catch him? 😯

  41. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 7:54 am

Back to more running drills and Coach Shaw just did his Coach Tormey impression.

Coach Shaw is not letting the oline off “easy”. The result? Alex Green found a nice hole and hit it hard. The intensity with the oline is picking up with urgency.

  42. Stretch August 25, 2009 8:05 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Thanks for the depth chart. I hope that the “backups” don’t quit and continue to compete for playing time. On the same note, I hope the “starters” don’t let up.

  43. NYUH August 25, 2009 8:10 am

    Mrs. McMackin,

    Ha’a or Haka?

And do you practice either in the privacy of your home?

  44. rage777 August 25, 2009 8:18 am

    Mrs. McMackin,

Wouldn’t it be easier to explain offenses and defenses by playing the Madden video games?

  45. Kekoa August 25, 2009 8:19 am

Kaha’i #5!…it’s tuff being vertically challenged. Stay with it kiddo!

Jett Jasper #4…if they ever need a tough catch to be made in traffic, Jett is the man. That kid has taken a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’!

  46. Pomai August 25, 2009 8:27 am

Kekoa I agree with your #45 on Jett Jasper, from little I have seen this kid is a keeper. He’s only a So. so he’s got a chance to really shine in the next year or two.

  47. Pomai August 25, 2009 8:28 am

Kazz how’s my boy Alex Dunnachie doing?

  48. Slugger August 25, 2009 8:29 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

    Mahalo for the updates, Kazz!

  49. las vegas August 25, 2009 8:30 am

    Mrs. McMackin,
You and your family are invited to the Las Vegas K-Call
on Friday 9/18 at KIKU HANA restaurant.
That is, unless you are busy diagramming plays.
Kiku Hana is just a few minutes away from the Sun Coast

Now I really like this, Jake is a player.

  51. Kekoa August 25, 2009 8:33 am

Good Morning Pomai. See you at noontime.

Thanks for posting the predicted scores. Maybe now that you are *home* we can crank up some prizes to hand out to da winnah-winnah chicken dinnah!

  52. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 8:34 am

Dunnachie is being Dunnachie. Coach Tormey’s concern is with the punt protection.

Also just had sudden change and Shane Austin and Mike Wadsworth SMOKED everyone else.

  53. haka August 25, 2009 8:37 am

    Heather,
How’s the family, including the horse :), adjusting to Hawaii?

  54. 808Chef August 25, 2009 8:42 am

    Aloha Ms. Mack…

How would you rate Coach Mack’s cooking skills at home?

Behind every man is a great woman. My Dad believes it, I believe it wholeheartedly, and I’m sure Coach Mack does as well.

  55. Kekoa August 25, 2009 8:42 am

Kazz ~ No doubt the opposition will be plotting ways to get to him once he booms one above the lights!

Having said that, is there any ‘rugby’ style plan being practiced?

    Aussie Aussie Aussie!…Oy Oy Oy!

    GO WARRIORS!

  56. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 8:43 am

Got some HARD hitting going on right now with goal line situational/drills. Moniz getting some good time right now.

Brent Rausch is now back in.

  57. jm2375 August 25, 2009 8:52 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Kazz – thanks for the practice updates. Where’s ST?

Speaking of Aussie punters, I heard that the NFL is looking at the new Cowboys stadium. Something about the overhead monitors being too low and interfering with punts…

  58. Kekoa August 25, 2009 8:52 am

    Mrs. McMacken:

    1. What is your favorite *Hawaiian* food and have you learned to prepare it?

    2. Poi or rice?

    3. Raw Poke or baked Opakapaka?

    4. Kalua Pig or Roast Pork?

    5. Mai Tai’s or iced tea?

  59. Cindy Cee August 25, 2009 8:54 am

  60. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 9:00 am

Final portion of practice had field goals.

Scott Enos looked like he upped the stakes with more power behind his kicks. The ball was set around the 25yd line. His field goals were soaring well above the uprights to the height of the video tower.

    Enos was 3 for 4.

  61. Kekoa August 25, 2009 9:01 am

Kazz ~ Can you tell if the QB’s are:

    1. Able to complete their progression?

    2. looking off the receivers?

    3. moving with confidence in the pocket?

  62. Colomaohana August 25, 2009 9:01 am

    Morning, Tsai-ko Ohana!

    Morning, gang.

    Kazz,

Mahalo for your, almost, play by play, you’re bringing me closer to the team, which is very nice, all the way here in Florida.

I don’t think the depth chart is completely cast in stone, with all this talent everywhere, I would consider it a more fluid situation, until the last couple of practices, but off course, that’s only my very humble opinion.

One thing I believe, there will be plenty of playing time for a lot of players.

Kazz ~ Can you tell if the QB’s are:

    1. Able to complete their progression?

    2. looking off the receivers?

    3. moving with confidence in the pocket?

To best answer these to the most of my ability to make “judgements”, it’s apparent that the quickest of passing decisions is obviously coming from Greg Alexander.

As we all know in order for a QB to be able to do #s 1-3 as Kekoa asked about, it starts with the offensive line.

During full speed 11 on 11s with full defensive pressure, the starting oline was able to fend off the press for a decent 3 seconds and 4 ish at the most. Alexander made some decent throws to the flats or to the out routes and a few times he did have to buy himself some more time when the protection did break down.

In my observation the outside pass protection looked better than a week ago, but some questions and caution remain within the interior.

As I mentioned earlier, Gordy Shaw had a moment of displeasure as the offensive line were going through some run blocking drills. It was quickly fixed though.

  101. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 1:35 pm

BTW ST, was there at practice with Kekaula and crew. I noticed him around 7:30 ish I think…

  102. Coqui poke August 25, 2009 1:37 pm

I don’t know about the Warriors-MW analogy. I do know that they get unwarranted criticism from so called expert anal-ists; Kiper, Herbstreet, the fat guy on the Grey Goose 19th hole, etc.
I’ve been waiting for MW to have some recognition on the golf course but expected it to come in 2 years, after she graduates. But this past week, boy, did she hit some incredible shots. That her putts were falling just gives her competition something else to worry about – her whole game.
Yes, she is a pro and should be judged as such but I look at her as being only 19. Her interviews will get better and in time, there will be less “you knows” and “I means”. And I like her positive outlook. She acknowledges her mistakes but doesn’t dwell on them and I’ve never heard a negative comment about anyone.
I was glued to the TV this whole weekend and proud of our ladies in the LPGA. Guts and glory. It was their time to shine. Warriors time will come soon. Imua.

  103. HiFlyer August 25, 2009 1:39 pm

Kazz – So the OL was only able to provide 3-4 seconds of protection, that does not sound very good. Is this from the shotgun formation?

    HiFlyer:

Kazz – So the OL was only able to provide 3-4 seconds of protection, that does not sound very good. Is this from the shotgun formation?

It seemed like it to me, but I didn’t have a stopwatch. In that respect I guess you could count those 3 or 4 seconds as “quality” seconds as the heavy pass rushers like a John Fonoti or a Jake Huen were kept at bay “well” as opposed to the previous weeks. but at the same time GA was able to either release the ball to a receiver in the “nick” of time or throw it away to avoid a sack. More so, GA was able to find his open man more times than throwing it away.

Those are two positives there. Last season GA was known, during fall camp, to throw the ball away rather than make a risky pass. As the season went along we all saw GA had the ability, at times, to run the ball on his own and he could improvise, at times… As that grew and as his confidence in that part of his game grew, the sacks started mounting up and he barely saw him throw the ball away to avoid a possible pick, pick 6, or a loss of yardage off a sack.

Looks like GA is getting back to that as a last resort rather than taking the sack or risking the pick.

Today the defensive secondary was not able to record one pick, I think. There were maybe two possible picks but they never came to fruition.

  106. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 2:09 pm

With the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball team hitting the court THIS Friday night at 7pm, Don Robs made a DAMN good point this morning about how the #7 Rainbow Wahine Volleyball team is getting the short end of the media stick with regards to “countdowns” to the start of their season.

Deep down, I think our interests to all of our beloved UH athletic programs remains equal with the ones we follow and we all share a same interest and passion to see them succeed.

Truth be told football is the machine that keeps almost everything running, BUT Wahine volleyball is right behind them as a profit-maker as well but their conference success over the past DECADE (and more) and their national prominence in comparison to UH football is not even close… That’s just the hard facts and not to mention that head coach Dave Shoji IS by FAR the most successful UH head coach EVER.

Honestly I remain surprised that we were ranked higher than we were last year considering the losses of Tara Hittle and Jamie Houston and considering that while we have some much needed height up front and outside a good amount of these new girls remain unexperienced at the division one level of collegiate volleyball.

If anything the #7 ranking is great, and dare I say a sign of national respect for the Wahine program.

Some people wanna say that “oh yeah, the Wahine always win the WAC and lose everything else”… but then, these are the SAME people crying, pissing, and moaning about the football program NOT winning the WAC year in and year out and blah blah blah…

These people or so-called “fans” are nothing but losers and only expect MORE than what they are personally willing (“WILLING” not “able”, but not “WILLING”) to invest in the UH athletic programs in terms of emotional support and or whatever financial support they can afford. This probably tells us a little bit of their personal life, but I’m not going to get into that… So as far as I am concerned their opinion don’t mean s**t and I’m leaving it at that. Their temporary “dollars” at the gate might as well be absent and non-existent when the team(s) needs them the most and they are not there as they are busy sitting on their wallets with their arms crossed while checking up on the USC, Ohio State, or Florida football game scores on their cell phones waiting to see if they made da spread to go blow their money in Vegas and when they lose it they fire back that UH sporting events cost too much…

    Go figure..

    (ok I’m done and I need a smoke now 👿 )

  107. Derek August 25, 2009 2:11 pm

I’ll take a stab at the prediction. 1 kickoff or punt return for TD, 1 interception or fumble return for TD, 4 offensive TDs, 1 field goal, 1 extra point missed. Final tally. UH – 44 Central Arkansas – 0.

Hmmm.. That’s a trivia question right there.

When was the last time UH football recorded a “shut out” over it’s opponent?

  109. jm2375 August 25, 2009 2:25 pm

so Kazz, tell us how you really feel. 😆

Don Robbs also made a good point that today’s powerhouses in women’s vb are from the BCS conferences and the money flowing in from those overinflated AD budgets of those schools. UH is doing a great job keeping up with them with our manini budgets.

  110. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 25, 2009 2:28 pm

Good stuff Lava, and to add to your #36 post, it let me say there is no serious justification of booing the home crowd booing their home C-O-L-L-E-G-I-A-T-E team. Some people tried to justify this piss poor show of crowd “enthusiasm” last season, but it was laughable.

The old (optimal word here is “OLD”) way of thinking is more counter-productive than anything.

Besides, I’d like to see someone justify any UH fan booing the UH football team and then expect visiting recruits in the stadium to think “oh this is great, the fans in Hawaii are real dedicated, true, and must know their football…” pfffttt.. bulls**t! 🙄

    Coqui poke:

To quiet the cynics and naysayers all I said was that both MW and the Warriors have to perform at the top level. This statement I think is true. That’s the reason I see this as an analogy. Soon as MW puts together a few wins a lot of her skeptics will get of her back. Likewise with the Warriors, soon as they escape being near the bottom in team statistics in four team categories and start looking like how the Boise team plays then a lot of the skeptics, naysayers, cynics etc would get off their back, too. And until either MW or the Warriors go up to the next level there will always be those that look at them pointedly, which to me I don’t know how any one can argue against this point.

  117. LizKauai August 25, 2009 3:04 pm

I don’t think there is an argument as to the fact that winning hushes the crowd, but I do not believe that the fans and the media in particular, as you singled out, should send a volatile message of discontent to the team if they lose. Unless the situation is so out of hand and mismanaged, I think the critics should use constructive commentary as the sword that inks the paper. IMHO

If past reports of the Warriors not taking practices as seriously as they should are true, and I have no reason to doubt certain Tsai-ko observers, hopefully Brashton will observe how seriously USC is taking their practices in preparation for SJSU.

Maybe the Warriors will get the message and begin to get a lot more serious during practices and off-season workouts.

I am definitely a Hawaii fan. Nobody should question that. However, I want all of us to be aware that we cannot walk into the stadium next week Friday thinking that the Bears from Central Arkansas will simply bow down and worship us. They will be well prepared to play against us. They are in the same frame of mind that we were in when we went up to play against Florida last year. Florida did not play a good game last year against our Warriors. We handed the game to them by turning the ball over every chance that we had.

Superior athleticsm does not guarantee wins. Superior execution does.

As a football program we have a 36% winning percentage over the last 14 years. We are 5 and 9 on opening day. We had signature losses against teams that we were superior to in talent.

    9-4-04 FAU 35 UH 28
    9-9-00 PSU 45 UH 20

I just want us to all remember that we need to put on our chin straps and pack our lunchpails because this is not P.E. class. Everyone you play, every week of the season is going to bring their A-game. So we need to be ready to play. Can we beat these guys by six touchdowns? Of course we can. But we need to be prepared for a humdinger of a ballgame. Don’t ever take anyone lightly. Always be vigilant.

    Nuff Sed.

Talented returners, especially the linebacking corps of Blaze Soares and R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane, will anchor the new-look defense that will rely heavily on its team speed. Fonoti started all 14 games last season and finished with 62 tackles and 3.5 sacks. McMackin called the 6-foot-2, 290-pound Meatoga the team’s “best tackle” last season even though he was a redshirt freshman.

  141. warriorfanny2 August 25, 2009 4:41 pm

Most passes in the ron lee system are designed for 2.5 release. IF 3-seconds on the “hold”– should be adequate, IF 4-seconds, that is great stuff! IF GA can make the correct read and IF his receivers have field-route-IQ–3-4 secs should rock. Please note: those are three big “IFs”.

It was worth it to stop by and swap handshakes (and hugs with Diana) at the CC today. Could just feel the wave of excitement build toward the season opener…people were talking about how early they could get to the t-gate! 11am? 10am? 9am? Folks with real jobs had already put in their vacation slips! Primed and ready to roll….

We have two tickets for Sunday’s Wahine volleyball game with UCLA which we cannot use because we are attending a Family Promise dinner to recognize program volunteers. Both start at 5 pm. The tickets are upper level opposite the teams.

If you would like them, please send me an e-mail to s wood at hoku dot com – include your phone number and real name – so I can call you to talk about getting the tickets to you.

I hope the coaches rotate players to keep guys fresh, not in the 4th quarter, but in every quarter. If they do that, they will improve their chances of winning games.

If you don’t substitute, you allow weaker opponents a competitive edge. I would wager Central Arkansas enters the game in better physical shape than the Warriors. Our depth can mean the difference of 20 points in this first game.

    Re: IMC operations

I was using a ‘leg’ key once and unknowingly sent a super long signal when my key brushed against the desk. That set off some teletype msgs from the NCS at 8th Army HQ in Seoul. They thought the N Koreans had jammed the 8th Army net. Sometimes they managed to find our operating frequency and blasted the “bagpipes”to disrupt operations.

It took awhile for me to stop randomly translating ordinary building & street signs into code when I got out of USASESCS. Thank goodness for the wave of hi-tech equipment that replaced the sending and receiving devices of the past. Mastering the ‘butterfly’ key was the mark of a seasoned operator. Thank goodness I had moved on to other specialties before losing my sanity to the code.

I’m still not buying the Wie = Warriors thing. Yes, winning hushes critics of their play, but it doesn’t necessarily win over fans, and nothing short of a major miracle is going to get some people cheering for Wie.

I am a Warrior fan, win or lose, because the players are likable and entertaining.

I am not a Wie fan, and whether she wins or loses I will not be a Wie fan, because I don’t find her to be likable or entertaining. I’ll stop short of saying whether I would always feel this way, but she is going to have to undergo a major makeover to win me as a fan. Tadd, Parker, Dean, heck ya, but Wie, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

A reminder that this is the time of year that we can start expecting visitors from other teams. IDK, but “Independent” might have been one. Let’s remember to treat them with respect like any visitor to our hale. They are fans just like us. Some may not be very likeable, but we may also meet up with another super fan like our Georgia Bulldog cousin….(senior moment on name! Yikes!)

With Stuzz2, unlike bro Craig as a true Frosh, there is better talent and quality depth in 2009. Hence, RS year for S2 is a no brainer, that is the reason for his depth status.
The downside for the RNS as a WR is the required IQ to breakin and contribute in your 1st year. Look at our JUCOs last year–all 5 did a redshirt. That was under ron lee and mac.
The RNS under MAC is different and offers more route options and it appears NOT to be newbee friendly.
QBs, Receivers, staff–they all looked confused last year….let’s see what happens in the 2nd year learning curve in ’09.
Stuzz2 is legit–he will contribute, barring inj in the future–but rs in 2009 looks to be in the cards.

Dont worry about Stepter, he is on the edge of a 3.0 rotation and will get his shot….it will be a long season and dont forget STs, injuries and the like. If he has field-IQ he will play…,.he has a hammer….plus I like the fact that Tormey is lurking in the D-backfield and will offer another point-of-view.

    @lava

I too wasn’t a MW fan…..until she went to Q school and qualified.

Many blame her parents, but the LPGA, PGA, and The Nationwide share equal fault. They all wanted this kid for the “draw”. She is good but the mind is a funny thing! Physically, she should have won by now. But golf as in other sports, is a mental game.

Having gone and qualified at Q school and being picked and playing well in the Solheim cup will do wonders for her mental game. She’ll be a winner soon. In retrospect she already is.

  193. bighilofan2 August 25, 2009 8:07 pm

    Royvic,

unfortunately, you are right about that too.
I know I saw his check (Matsuo) and he’s Garrett’s dad.
I know the check amount was 50. I have his short letter and his envelope. I have kept all the envelopes and will meet with my secretary tomorrow and scour the black hole on my desk to see if anything turns up.

but on a serious note, last week I called LizK and I read her all the check amounts of the checks that were sent in, along with the cover letter identifying all the contributors connected to the checks. Unfortunately, I omitted Momo’s name on the cover letter.

I just added up the amounts listed on the cover letter sent last week
    50 25 25 50 25 25 25 = 225
    50 25 50 25 25 25 = 200
    200 20 50 25 25 = 320
    50 50 25 50 25 20 = 220
    300 35 25 25 = 385
    50 100 25 = 175

    i count 15 25
which means I forgot to put Momo’s name on the list but counted his check anyway

my apologies to Momo. But I did send in your money.

  194. Stephen Tsai August 25, 2009 8:07 pm

Dragged this over from the Log Cabin Democrat today.

giving the players the day off, University of Central Arkansas football coach Clint Conque and staff spent almost all Monday in the film room.

They reviewed Saturday’s final scrimmage. They reviewed film from preseason camp. They started to evaluate the University of Hawaii, the first opponent on Sept. 4 in Honolulu.

Serious preparations for the opener begins today.

“We’re locked into game mode now,” Conque said. “There’s a different sense of urgency when you enter game week. In preseason camp, the focus was entirely on us. Now, we preparing to play a game and the pace picks up.”

Although he saw several positive things from the final scrimmage, Conque was upset with the number and nature of penalties.

“We had seven penalties before the ball was even snapped — six on offense and one on defense,” he said. “That’s unacceptable.”

    He saw progress on offense.

“The 1’s offense, particularly when Robbie Park was the quarterback, moved the ball well and got a bit of a rhythm,” Conque said. “There were no negative plays with them and several big plays.”

Defensive back Anthony Gambles, defensive linemen Larry Hart, Taylor Scott and Uriah Perry were used sparingly or not used at all as a precautionary measure against injuries.

“The 1’s gave up a big run on a long-yardage situation, but that’s easily correctable,” Conque said. “It’s a measure of getting the eyes in the right place. We were expecting pass and weren’t watching for the run.”

He said the receivers and tight ends caught the ball well and had no dropped.

“The only drops we had were by the same back out of the backfield,” he said.

He said Anthony Blackmon had a very good scrimmage at running back.

“He and (Terence) Bobo give us an explosive element and have really challenged themselves behind the two veterans (Brent Grimes and Leonard Ceaser),” Conque said. “Our defense for the most part did well on the goal line. They didn’t make thing easy.”

Conque said that offensive tackle Matt Dickerson has been moved to guard but will rotate at tackle.

“This gives us the best chance to be successful and that’s what we are asking in our personnel evaluations,” Conque said.

Quarterback Nathan Dick, who has been unable to throw for about two weeks because of a triceps injury, will be further evaluated in practices today and Wednesday, Conque said. He said it’s a possibility he might not be on the traveling squad to Hawaii, leaving the No. 2 quarterback in a state of flux.

The 66 or 67 players we take to Hawaii are all going to have to be able to contribute if called upon,” Conque said. “We’ve always had a rule that you’ve got to be able to practice to play. Nathan needs to practice because he really hasn’t had a lot of work.

Among the newcomers who have earned a spot on the two-deep or on special teams are wide receiver Dominque Croom, offensive linemen Dominque Allen and Nate Richards, defensive backs LaDarius Winston and Marcus Dumas and tight end Mason King.

He said the UCA coaches were “chasing ghosts” a bit in evaluating Hawaii from video on the last couple of years in preparation for this year’s Warriors.

They return two starters on defense and six or seven on offense and their quarterback returns as well as their top two receivers and an All-American candidate offensive lineman,” he said. “They started out in more of a run spread last year but at the end of the year seemed to get back to their roots as a true spread offense.

But I’ve studied Notre Dame tape and Florida tape (former Hawaii opponents), and that’s a different experience for a UCA coach.

focus, Warriors, focus. listen to Mr. Tormey, Mr. Shaw and Mr. Smith.
they’re listening to Coach Mack! these guyz are professionals.

The starting MLB for Oregon State this season was set to go to UH until a Hawaii high school coach suggested to Oregon State that they recruit him.

Can the Beavers fill their opening at middle linebacker with a player who has more experience in mixed martial arts than football?

Well, yes, based on the early reviews of sophomore David Pa’aluhi III, headed for his first collegiate start when OSU opens against Portland State on Sept. 5.

The University of Hawaii was recruiting Pa’aluhi, and had competition after OSU went to Honolulu to end the 2006 season and a high school coach made Banker aware of Pa’aluhi.

“I’ve got good sources in Hawaii, and I trust their evaluation and judgment,” Banker said.

I am not a Wie fan, and whether she wins or loses I will not be a Wie fan, because I don’t find her to be likable or entertaining. rocks,

Someday, in Coach Mack’s mind, he envisions the Warriors program will be similar to hotel that has a five star rating, where it’s ostentatious, comfortable and top of the line.

Someday he also envisions the Warrior program attracting all the top local recruits.

I hope he does. All the fans and supporters do. Even the skeptics.

Compared to your statement, obviously, I’m hoping mine is more prophetic and epic.

to get dem Manoa, you’d have to bring in GREAT attitude. Shaw, Tormey and M Smith is a GREAT 1st year movement in dat direction. Aranda, Miano have dat intensity. an da oddaz are getting jacked up too, an day all no dat production is evaluation criteria numero uno. das why i asked earlier how Tormey was hooking up with Miano.
