Check-out time

Because two-a-days and late-night meetings continue, UH’s training camp, technically, runs through the end of this week. But the essential part of camp — the team staying in the two dance studios — ends today, with the players moving into dormitories and off-campus apartments.

    Top 15!

  14. whitey August 19, 2009 7:06 am

Good to read about the injured players getting ready to go back into practice. Hitting and getting injuries are part of the game and during training camp it becomes more important cause this is what you will carry over into the season. When in season, practice will not be as difficult because they put in their dues during the training camp. Getting up to game speed is another question and imho this can only be learned by playing. That’s another reason of the importance of game 1, CA.

  15. Garret August 19, 2009 7:09 am

Five players from UH made CBS Sports’ All-Decade team for the WAC. All of them are definitely deserving, and other Warriors also could have been named to the team.

Colt Brennan was the fifth player from Hawaii to make the squad, joining Bess, Lelie, offensive lineman Samson Satele, linebacker Solomon Elimimian and returner Chad Owens.

Owens almost made it as a wide receiver too, but was more valuable as a kick returner. Owens tied the NCAA record for most TDs on kick returns in a career with eight (six punts and two kickoffs) and had five punt returns for TDs during his senior year. He finished his career with a school-record 29.4-yard average on kick returns.

Kekoa – working from home today – sick child, so no practice. BTW, puppy had his last puppy shots over the weekend, so he can go out wherevas now and it’s time to sign him up for puppy obedience class.

Best wishes to the fb team as they vacate the Manoa Hilton. School starts Monday. Traffic gonna be terrible next week since a certain private school on Wilder Ave also starts Monday.

have the coaches figured out the depth chart and scout teams for at least some positions??? DL, LB, OL, RB?

i know they are still deciding on 2nd QB, WR/slots, CB and Safeties.

  27. Kekoa August 19, 2009 7:48 am

E kala mai Liz!…Have to act like one real family. Not a perfect world. Like sibling rivalry, chet happens sumtimes. Most of us here realize it’s mostly ‘leg pulling’ as bhf2 suggests. Besides, you know that the big huggy bears in dis klan no longer kill and eat their young like we used to!

Right now it’s obvious you’re trying to save face by finding as much fault in me as you can

But if you’re going to being signaling out people that didn’t contribute–then why did you only mention my name? And not the many others?

Good to hear about Solly getting a chance with the Bills…hope he does well….

  35. SailorBlue August 19, 2009 8:13 am

DDR ~ Thanks for asking…Mrs. SB and I are healing well…she traded her crutches for a cane a couple days ago and is much happier…I am eating pretty much all foods albeit in smaller portions than before…still of beers so I guess rum, tequila and wine will have to suffice 🙂

  36. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 19, 2009 8:18 am

Good to hear Corey Nielsen is ok! Continued well-wishes for Brashton and his ohana. I believe Mana and Jake will do fine.

BTW, Solomon Elimimian will be on The Sports Animals today right when they start at 4pm.

  37. SailorBlue August 19, 2009 8:20 am

bhf2 ~ feel free to add Mrs SB and I to your bike list…$50 check went into the mail yesterday…

  38. SailorBlue August 19, 2009 8:23 am

Kekoa ~ if UH would move the practice to the waterfront (i.e. Aloha Stadium) I could drive da boat right up and watch from the bridge…Otherwise hard to get the bosses to put the brow down long enough for me to escape to practice…

BTW…tomorrow night Mrs. SB and I are headed for San Francisco for a week or so…short business meeting with a side trip to Napa / Sonoma for some R&R…so I’ll prolly be off the WB more than on it…

  39. Kekoa August 19, 2009 8:30 am

letsgowarriors ~ Depth chart is becoming a very important factor at all positions. Tough choices remain for the coaches to make.

Ok…gotta get some real coffee, this instant stuff don’t cut it…bbl

  40. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 19, 2009 8:32 am

  49. Dirty Commish August 19, 2009 8:53 am

    Football football football football!!! Yaaaaaaaaaaay!!!

Forgive me if I seem like a n00b, but do (did) Brashton and Blaze both play the ILB spot? Either way we REALLY REALLY REALLY need Blaze to stay healthy this year and put the OTHER guys in the training room, ya know?

Questions remain about the youth of the defense, but maybe the offense can carry the team this year? I mean, if the opponent scores 40 on us it’s Greg & Co.’s job to put up 41, no?

Chomping at the bit to get the season started.

Video game nerds, PS3 price drop coming soon. Question is, am I the kind of dork that would buy a new system just for the new Madden? Answer: Sadly, probably yes.

    Football! Yay!

  50. kaoakane™ August 19, 2009 8:54 am

  55. Kekoa August 19, 2009 9:03 am

RC ~ The word is single someone out, not signal. You just happen to be the only one that fails to see the good deeds the Tsaiko’s do. So that’s one reason.

You complain that I don’t have anything to add to this blog. I beg to differ. I just don’t overstate the obvious and write an entire book about it.

Most of us played, coached or did both. We don’t need it spoon fed. BTW are your observations taken from the sidelines at the practice sessions?

‘Nuff sed. Back to the regular programing. Come talk to me face to face if you want to finish this. I’m always available.

royal crown — I found your comment #210 in yesterday’s blog entry very interesting as you describe the blog of 2 years ago. I have a database of apparent “real” bloggers and when they first appeared since August 2006.

Your 2 year ago comment, if taken literally, would put you at a time where most people you are currently “jousting” with were newbies or did not appear yet. If true, this puts you right in the middle of them in blog time…. and you are right about the blog circumstances (but the people are a different matter).

I am very curious if you have posted here under different names over the years. If you have, please email me at: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

I will keep any info you provide confidential if you wish. You point out issues regarding the blog in general and phases that will be in ST’s once and future book about the Tsai-kos 🙂

BTW, as far as declined post count goes, we dropped from 500-800 comments per day to current levels when this current blogware was implemented. A lot of posters had massive tech problems and many never came back. Then too, many of the bloggers have met in person at numerous cattle calls, karaoke calls, tailgates, etc. and communicate on a different level nowadays… another interesting surmise that should go into ST’s book 😎

how long do you dangle a carrot?
young qb manley was offered well over a year now. i believe we are still his only bonafide d1 offer.

    when do we move over?
i’d be offering jeremy higgins about now and push for a whomever commits first race.

  81. letsgowarriors August 19, 2009 9:48 am

i dont think fifita has any pac10 offers yet, so we may lose any chance once he lands one. height may be the thing holding him back like GDL.

vainuku is huge. idk where he would play at UH, LB or DE. at least he put us in his top 5.

    UH feature on the LBs.

Despite the losses, the Warriors have a slew of returning players with experience, whom defensive coordinator Cal Lee believes are more than capable of performing on the field.

“You never replace players as good as those guys, Lee said, “but you want to fill the shoes as much as possible. I love their work ethic. They’re working hard every day to be as good as the guys that left. And I don’t think we lose that much as far as speed goes. All our linebackers run really well. Our speed is as good as it was last year.”

However, with Soares not at a full 100 percent, it could be a breakout year for sophomore Corey Paredes, who is in line for a starting spot outside.

“I think people don’t realize who he is” Lee said. “They know Blaze, they know Brashton, they know RJ. I think Corey is a guy that will come out before it’s said and done.”

young qb manley was offered well over a year now. i believe we are still his only bonafide d1 offer.

    when do we move over?
i’d be offering jeremy higgins about now and push for a whomever commits first race.

JJ is closing practices at SMU and explains why practices could be open in Hawaii.

Jones said today that he’ll close practice to the public starting next week. He said his hand was forced when he saw spectators with video cameras at a recent session.

Things are different than in Hawaii, he pointed out. None of its opponents flew out to the islands to get a little practice footage.

  131. Garret August 19, 2009 11:40 am

I thought that UH wanted to get just 1 QB for the 2010 recruiting class because 3 QBs were taken in the 2009 class? To me that would be the strongest argument against offering Higgins since Spain already committed.

  132. Garret August 19, 2009 11:42 am

According to this post on SportsHawaii, Kalani Brackenridge did not sign a pro baseball contract but he will not play football for UH. He’s apparently going to look to play college baseball and give up football.

  133. Derek August 19, 2009 11:45 am

When is the team going to practice under lights at Aloha Stadium to get acclimated. And what about allowing fans to see the practice for free at Aloha Stadium? Don’t you think thats a good idea? I for one would come out. Saw the highlights of Vainuku on YouTube. He’s a good one and UH should try to get this guy. He’s perfect for a power back. And he seems to have some speed as many of his runs are for long gainers.
    He’s a tough mother!!!!

  134. koakane™ August 19, 2009 11:46 am

jw good one a real tsaiko smart arse luv you man

  135. A-House August 19, 2009 11:49 am

    al:

your #80 post – I was disappointed that Princess Leila did not read my question to Coach Mack on their show.

I asked when or at what point do you stop recruiting a “targeted” UH prospect and offer that scholarship to another student athlete who REALLY wants to be a Warrior?

as for the 2 most recent commits to UW, I guess the BCS pull was too much to turn down. however, didn’t a former Hawaii player who went away and now wants to play for UH discuss his disapointment with reality at his prior school? guess many Hawaii players are given the “you are the best and can start for us” bullsh*t and do not realize that they are one of many who hear the same thing – and the others are bigger, stronger, faster! no matter how good you are, there will always be someone bigger, stronger, and faster then you and, perhaps, a better student academically.

I have confidence, that in time, UH will be the #1 school for many Hawaii student athletes in many sports – football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, golf, scoccer, swimming/diving, etc.

  136. Garret August 19, 2009 11:54 am

    A-House,

The two most recent commits to U-Dub are from Long Beach, CA. They aren’t examples of Hawaii players choosing mainland schools.

  137. letsgowarriors August 19, 2009 11:57 am

i thought UH has outstanding offers to Manley AND Higgins. id go for higgins, its obvious manley is just waiting around for a bigger offer. but thanks for not verballing then running off when a better offer comes around…

    COLT WATCH (reprise?)

    http://www.redskins.com/gen/articles/For_Brennan__It_s_One_Step_At_a_Time_47043.jsp

“Enter “Nephew,” the nickname that the Redskins’ cornerbacks have given Brennan.

“When it comes time for preseason, I want to have four great games and I want everybody to step back and say, ‘Wow, look how much the kid has grown from last year,” Brennan said.

“So I’m just planning on going out there and producing, making plays, managing the offense, moving the offense and scoring points.”

“QB Colt Brennan has been working with the second team offense and will likely play with that unit Saturday against Pittsburgh. Redskins coach Jim Zorn said, “We know what Todd (Collins) can give us. We want Colt to get a good look.””

  148. J-Dog August 19, 2009 12:46 pm

I agree that if Manley really wanted to be a warrior, he would have verballed already. Obvious that he is waiting for other offers and no big deal as that’s his choice as part of the recruiting process.

I also thought that with the verbal of Kevin Spain, that we would stop with the QB recruiting for 2010. But as we saw with this past class, the coaches could not turn down a late verbal from David Graves, even after getting Nielsen and Shutter.

I haven’t seen Higgins play, but he seems to be up there with Manley as the top local QB. I wondered how we missed out on his older brother that plays for Weber St.

Anyone know the local broadcast time for the Sept 12 game at Washington State?

  164. Don Weir August 19, 2009 2:20 pm

    A-House,
This is the plan on our end.
I’d buy another but we have a budget meeting next week to see how we are going to make $$ last to next June. I still have to cover summer school, training table, and recruiting, and other costs.
Na Koa currently runs on a calendar year and I want to bring it to a fiscal year. This will bring us in line with the foundation that controls the fiscal process for Na Koa and the Athletic Dpeartment who we serve. That means we will belt tighten until June 30, 2010.
I do not want to continue the process of borrowing from next years expected membershiop donations to pay for this years costs.
    Bike Update
I have the vendor selected and I am waiting on the e-mail giving me the contact name for the Sales Mgr. in Seattle. I found free shipping but only to the 48 mainland states.
I figure that I get the Sheraton’s Mgr to store the bike until UH gets there, the trainers may assemble and then disassemble, put it in the original box, send it to LV and repeat the process and then ship it home to HNL.
Now we have a box suitable for shipping and we save the shipping costs in lieu of use for 1 game.
Mahalo bighilofan2 for taking care of the the donation end. I will call once the order is placed and give you an exact amount.
Is everyone OK with me putting it on my credit card and then depositing the checks to UH for repayment?

  172. al August 19, 2009 2:33 pm

    mr. ahouse

mack has made it clear that he would not pull back a scholie offer unless, a situation arises. for example, in some cases it is common practice to offer a kid a full ride but, that offer may come with some conditions like a time line or we will only take 3 olinemen and the first three are in. those kinds of stuff and then there will be some “standing offers” for example a kid like manti teo would be given an indefinite confirmation date.

it could have been the bcs, it could have been family ties, it could have been girlfriends, it could have been a particular major, it could have been a number of things just like why we all make choices in life that some times defies logic.

this will never change. i think it is cool that kids like tuipoloutu was given an opportunity to come home. watch him shine next year, these return trip players seem to play with a lot of heart and are most appreciative of their God given second chance.

With a new QB and the loss of their top returning WR, it sounds like Central Arkansas will try to run the ball against UH.

The University of Central Arkansas Bears will be playing without its top returning receiver when they open the 2009 season at Hawaii on Sept. 4.

Landers, a second-team preseason All-Southland Conference pick, was the top returning receiver for the Bears after catching 44 passes for 735 yards and 7 touchdowns a year ago. McNeal caught 23 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown, while Ragland had no catches in nine games. Gabriel is a redshirt sophomore who played in four games and had six tackles in 2008.

Use your best judgment. We are here to do the best we can with what we have for THE WARRIORS!

Very interesting and amusing subject. I read with great pleasure.

DON WEIR: There seems to be some for sale on e-Bay. Don’t know if it’s the model you want/need.

  187. al August 19, 2009 3:06 pm

don….ebay has two vendors one at 650 and another at 750. i have left an inquiry regarding shipping.

    i’ll let you know asap.

  188. Don Weir August 19, 2009 3:09 pm

    al,
I’ll look in to how to handle an e-bay transaction with UHF fiscal. This could be a first for them.
    Mahalos for the kokua.

  189. al August 19, 2009 3:10 pm

a lot of scholies became available because a lot of commits failed to get past the entrance requirements.

i won’t assume anything because if i don’t know then i leave it at that, i don’t know.

i know what was told to me and that is all i can go by. in most cases i try to listen to the “truth” because he never lies.

  190. al August 19, 2009 3:12 pm

don…if your resources have a credit or debit card then it won’t be a problem to purchase. you would actually be dealing with a vendor.

  191. d1島 August 19, 2009 3:14 pm

Mahalo for the info and follow through Don Weir.

    Bunker,

Nice of you to drop by say, “Hi” to Edith and tell the Meathead….well tell him he’s still a Meathead 🙄

Don: a customer review of the Schwinn IC Pro mentioned that brake lube and bolt grease are not included in the packing box. You might want to have those handy if you are going to assemble the bike in Seattle.

Apparently its Hawaii night with two 2007 games: Fresno State and Boise State as well as Washington. UH vs Notre Dame on 8/24

I see Georgia vs Hawaii on FCSA on 8/25

    Times are EST.

  196. Stephen Tsai August 19, 2009 3:36 pm

    A-House:
Mack isn’t allowed to talk about recruiting or offers, anyway.
But UH just doesn’t have enough room to add two QBs next year. In addition to the one commitment they received, in 2010 these are the QBs and the amount of years they have remaining:
    • Rausch — 1
    • Austin — 2
    • Moniz — 2
    • Graves — 4
    • Shutter — 4
    • Nielsen — 4
    That’s a lot of QBs.

  197. wafan August 19, 2009 3:36 pm

Dang. Just checked the weather in W. Washington. It is 6:45pm and it is still 90! Usually it is cooling by now. Perhaps they practice at this time not so much to practice under the lights (sun sets in about 2 hours) but to get out of the afternoon heat.

dj . . . keeping cool over the hill?

  198. whitey August 19, 2009 3:49 pm

ST #196 – Is Graves going to redshirt this year? If so that gives him 5 years here, and IMHO he is going to be a good one. I have been keeping an eye on him during the practices I’ve gone to and I have been impressed with his throws and his timing.

  210. Pomai August 19, 2009 4:34 pm

  222. Derek August 19, 2009 6:45 pm

No matter the amount of QBs, if you can find one who is better than all of them, you get em. You might find one, who’s a walk-on first, like Colt Brennan, but you gotta sell the kid to come to Hawaii. You have to keep looking at all times. Hopefully, the coaches know if the existing QBs have the potential to step up and be good at the Division IA level. If some of them can’t make it then they gotta move on. That’s the tough part of the coaching business. It’s all about winning, and they have to make the decision. I hope the coaches are doing their evaluation and are right about the kids they are bringing in. We will see about Mac’s recruiting class from last year and this year. I don’t know who’s recruiting QBs for UH now. I know June Jones was very astute in evaluating QBs so I trusted his judgment in that area.

  223. A-House August 19, 2009 6:56 pm

    Don Weir:

Would prefer that Na Koa write a check to pay for the bike and use the Tsaiko $$ to replinish the Na Koa Fund since checks are payable to Na Koa. Makes it crystal clear, like a glass house, to avoid future problems, if any.

Just my Inspector General training kicking in.

This is what the Conway Arkansas newspaper the Log Cabin Democrat is saying about UCA as they prepare for 9/4.

    UCA preparing for scrimmage 08/19/09 – 9:53pm

McCollum’s Column: This doesn’t look like a stereotypical UCA team
If you read the subtle clues coming out of preseason camp, you can deduce that this University of Central Arkansas team will smash some stereotypes this season….

UCA’s Perry excited about return to field
No one was more happy to attend University of Central Arkansas Media Day on Tuesday than defensive lineman Uriah Perry. No one has been more willing to sweat in the heat and endure the grind of preseason camp than Perry, a senior who began his career as a walk-on….

  227. A-House August 19, 2009 7:13 pm

    ST:

I was not trying to get Coach Mack to discuss any recruit; only a philosophical agenda to a “time line” for recruits to respond to an offer.
It’s all part of the recruiting plan.

While Coach Mack may currently adhere to “once an offer is made there will be no retraction”, time may come when he may have to face the reality of withdrawing offer(s). I don’t know if I could agree with Coach Mack on this. Like, Teo who did not list UH in his top 5 schools, may be, just may be, that scholarship could have been offered to someone who wanted to be a Warrior, but accepted a scholarship from another school because UH did not have any more to offer( just a scenario) before NLOI day.

Garret posted on several occasions that several BCS schools have done it in the past and continue to do so today.

  228. Bulla August 19, 2009 7:19 pm

    A-House,

many times schools will ‘over offer’ like overbooking, but letting the athletes know…’hey, we’re offering 3 of you but we only have 2 spots….so it’s up to you’, the first 2 to commit will be covered. this puts a little heat on the spot, and makes them get off the pot so to speak and make a decision. the sad part is when there are viable prospects that don’t get offered, go away and do very well…and the ones back home just keep ‘hanging on’…….all is good, players will always be players no matter where they go. not everyone can play for UH, but everyone can still play.

UH is an up and coming program, and is still a work in progress…….gotta believe!!!!

  229. bighilofan2 August 19, 2009 7:23 pm

here’s what they’re saying today in las vegas about UNLV

ELY — With a veteran team and some talented newcomers, Mike Sanford has enjoyed his most productive training camp entering his fifth season as UNLV’s football coach.

Sanford stopped short of stamping the camp a success ahead of tonight’s final practice, but clearly he’s pleased with the work the team has accomplished in Ely.

“I think our tempo is the fastest it’s been, meaning we’re getting the most plays run with the least amount of mistakes,” Sanford said. “Like (Tuesday), we had two (five-minute) periods where we started late and finished early.

“We’ve had times in the past where we wouldn’t even get through a script, which means that the concentration, the tempo, the speed to which we’re getting up to the line, getting the plays called, rotating groups in and out, is faster, and that’s good.”

Senior wide receiver Ryan Wolfe shared Sanford’s opinion of camp.

“All around, it’s the most efficient,” Wolfe said. “We’re getting the most done. The maturity level of this group is 10 times above anything we’ve ever had.”

Veterans have helped the newcomers adapt to major college football and UNLV’s system.

“We need to make sure they’re ready to contribute,” Wolfe said. “If we can get them to work where they need to be working, it saves the coaches a lot of extra time.”

    • LATE START — The Rebels are used to returning to Las Vegas from Ely and quickly getting into game-week mode.

    Not this time.

When they return, they will have more than two weeks to go until the Sept. 5 opener against Sacramento State at Sam Boyd Stadium. The college football season begins a week later this year.

“It’s going to be different,” Sanford said. “You can’t treat (next week) as a bye week because we haven’t played a game yet.

“The good thing about it, I think, is we’ll have a week of school where we’ll get used to the rhythm of school and practice for one week before we have a game. I think that will be really good, especially for the young players.”

    • COMING BACK — Sophomore C.J. Cox, limited by a hamstring injury, is expected to take part in about half of the drills this morning as he tries to get back into the competition for the starting tailback job.

Cox probably will participate in about 75 percent of the practices Friday night.

The Rebels are off Thursday to travel back to Las Vegas.

Sanford said Cox would be given every chance “within reason” to win the starting job.

“He can’t go up till the day before the game,” Sanford said. “He’s got to prove (it). Right now, we’ve got some guys that are going.

“Not that it’s his fault that he got injured, but at the same time, we’ve got a time issue. As we get closer to the game, we’ve got live (tackling) situations, and those are the only things we have to evaluate.”

Because hamstring injuries can linger, UNLV has been careful not to rush Cox back.

“I tried to come back a little bit earlier, probably about a week ago, but I hurt it again,” Cox said. “We’re just being real cautious right now.”

Nice mention of Bess in the Palm Beach Post.

Davone Bess was the star of 11-on-11 drills, catching several passes while continuing to work with the first team ahead of Greg Camarillo, who got in only four plays in Monday night’s exhibition opener.

  235. Garret August 19, 2009 8:26 pm

I’m glad that ESPN mentioned the Bills signing Sol…but given all the times UH has been on ESPN you would think that they could at least refer to UH correctly.

The Buffalo Bills have waived Ryan Neill, who’s been the team’s long snapper for the past two seasons.

The move indicates that Garrison Sanborn, an undrafted free agent out of Florida State, has won the job, since he’s the only other long snapper on the Bills roster.

The Bills also announced Wednesday that they’ve signed undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Solomon Elimimian. Terms were not disclosed.

The 5-11, 225-pound Calabar, Nigeria native was named the Western Athletic Conference co-defensive player of the year in 2008. He was a four-year starter for the Hawaii Rainbows.

A Boeing spokesman went to last week’s symposium on UAVs and passed himself off as a blogger instead of a Boeing employee, even asking questions as an “independent blogger” during new conferences of Boeing’s competitors. This could have serious implications for the media covering the defense industry and could end Boeing’s plan to create a defense industry blog.

In this case it would be a case of libel made worse by the fact that the internet spreads much faster and further.

d1 nothing much happened. lot of the practice devoted to the kicking game, kick off/return, on side, punting/return, punt block, punt coverage, peeps on the various teams being ready when called upon. a few minutes to offense and defense breaking up and going over assignment and alignments.

rumor has is there is a morning scrimmage but not sure what kind if only passing or full on.

  253. Ralph August 19, 2009 10:14 pm

BigHilo Maynard in #250 has a good suggestion. I’m sure if there is excess monies a reserve account can be established because I’m sure there will be other projects this season. After all, we’re still in preseason mode. If Al’s ebay listing is current and the same model is available at $650 the Tsaikos have already surpassed that amount, may have enough for two at that price.

Chawan ~ As Koakane explained in #252 above, that’s basically how fb practice went. However, we would be remiss if we didn’t include a word or two about the Band!

First they spent 2 hours practicing on the grass fb field. Then they took a little break at Ching field as they were setting up for another practice session after the team left.

They practiced their formations & flags as they marched around playing those golden oldies like our national anthem and Hawaii Pono’i. They sounded tight and together, and the drum line was steady. Even the youngsters breaking in were doing ok. They all sounded good to us.

So BHF2…your UH Marching Band awaits you!

    ST

    great article in da HA.

let me ask you these questions:

who would you choose as the current lifting LEADER?

who would you pick as having the best oline LEADER?

which 3 among the receivers looks the most GIFTED?

  267. Garret August 20, 2009 4:29 am

    Maynard G. Krebs,

    Good suggestion in #250.

Your interpretation in #249 is probably better than what I wrote.

The RB and returner for the BC Lions missed a few games due to injury and now seems to have lost both of his jobs. Even though he was the CFL special teams player of the year recently and set the kickoff return record last season, RGM has done so well as a returner that he might never get his job back. I feel badly for him but am happy that RGM is doing so well!

Rookie Ryan Grice-Mullen has filled in admirably on special teams; Martell Mallett is the early season CFL leader with 722 yards from scrimmage.

Activated from the injured list earlier this week, the 2007 CFL special teams player of the year knows it’s doubtful he’ll figure into the Lions roster for Friday’s home game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

But it can’t be easy to go from being the best returner in the league to an afterthought, through no fault of your own.

“Grice-Mullen and Mallett are playing well and the team’s winning — which is great,” said Smart, who last year set a CFL record for most kickoff returns and yards in a single season. “It just happens to put me in purgatory.”

    Ryan Mouton update:

Mouton update: Cornerback Ryan Mouton, who suffered a sprained ankle on Tuesday, was in the locker room on Wednesday wearing a walking boot. He’s not sure how long he’ll be in it.

Fisher called the sprain “significant” but the rookie has already started rehab.

“Injuries are part of the game and now I am just trying to get healthy and back on the field,” Mouton said. “I feel like I can play in this league and now I just have to get healthy.”

Too bad that Corey Paclebar and Steven Christian seem to be lost for the season.

  271. Bulla August 20, 2009 5:39 am

    good morning tsaikos,

have a great day, watch out for the puddles out there 🙁 homey, i said puddles, not poodles, haha

  272. Bulla August 20, 2009 6:06 am

    regarding the high ankle sprain,

whew, that’s a tough one to rehab from…takes longer than anticipated, and a hasty return will take him out for the season…..

good luck and prayers for a healthy rehab!

    Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

Can someone tell me where to send a check to bhf2 for the bike? I don’t have time to go through all the posts to find it. Thanks.

Good Morning All! It’s almost the weekend. Hope everyone has a good day.
    wafan,
I wish I was keeping cooler over here. Supposed to be really close to hitting the century mark today as far as the temp goes. I hope those Whitworth Pirates stay cool during practice today.
