Colt: "It's not true"

Colt Brennan called to say there’s no truth to the Jessica Simpson rumors.
“It’s not true,” Brennan said. “I’ve never even met her. I think it’s hilarious how these things get around. … Maybe somebody will start one about Megan Fox.”
He also said it would be “hysterical” if Tono Romo had started the rumor.
“That would  be the ultimate prank,” Brennan said.

Today’s practice — which will feature a 7-on-7 scrimmage — is the the last evaluation before the coaches meet tomorrow to reset the depth chart. One of the key people to keep an eye on is Brian Alos, who is considered to be the top high school referee in the state. Folks in the know say is ready to make the jump to the college level.

Wishing a speedy return for quarterback Corey Nielsen, who has been held out of practices after suffering an irregular heartbeat earlier this week.

Gonna to go watch Kahai in the scrimmage this morning.

Lots of football going on. Pono (KS) played Hilo last night. 44 – 3. Hoping for a successful injury free season.

Hmmm…not sure, but I think Bulla may have a comment about Mr. Alos (if that’s the guy I’m thinking of)

  9. Stephen Tsai August 15, 2009 7:05 am

They were supposed to go in full pads yesterday, but didn’t, so I’m tossing the practice schedule.
I hope they’re in full pads for the modified scrimmage today.

    Nalani:
I forgot to mention that a couple of days ago, in a one-on-one drill, Kahai popped a defensive end, causing the DE’s mouthpiece to fly out.

RGM was on tv last night, but not in a good way. He got tossed airborne while returning a kick off. Hung on to the ball though.

Anyway, off to Capilano Bridge. Good luck, Corey. Go Warriors!

This 5:05 start time is great for us outer island fans. Either a one day trip to Oahu or happy hour at the darkside. I wonder if a coke qualifies for happy hour.

  38. mctruck August 15, 2009 8:30 am

I happen to watch a re-run of the Baltimore/Washington game this morning on NFL network, and correct me if I’m wrong but it seems to me that by not allowing CB play with the 1st/2nd offensive-units, it probably does not mean much about where CB fits-in with their future plans???
The way I see it, if Washington/coaches were really interested to see what CB could do, they would have him run with the 1st/2nd offensive units????…by the commentators remarks, etc., not an impressive outing.
But, who can blame CB when he does not have the support???

Mctruck, I noted a couple of days ago the interview with the Redskins play by play guy Halloran (sp?) He said that Colt has no chance for the back up position as Collins is a lock. Further commented that Colt is in a fight with Daniels for the 3rd spot and Zorn really likes Daniels.

You can check to see if there is a replay of this interview with the Sports Animals afternoon show, I believe it was Thursday 8/13 right after the game. It also had a bunch of other comments by this guy on Colt.

I read ST article today describing CN medical condition with discernment, especially since every so often you end up reading a story of some athlete with a heart condition collapsing and dying on the field. It may have been two that I’ve read that happened this year, alone. And, to me, it sad to see this happen.

An irregular heartbeat caused by an enlarged heart, as described in the article, shouldn’t have been overlooked by the physician doing the pre-training camp physicals one would think.

My understanding a routine chest x-ray would show an enlarged heart. And subsequently a radiologist and physician should have picked this up during the physical exam.

Two concluding thoughts or hypothesis here: One, football athletes (like CN) pre-physicals are void of taking routine chest x-rays. Or two, CN had a chest x-ray during his exam that the physicians overlooked seeing the enlarged heart.

Either way it’s egregious for this to happen to CN for there’s so much at stake here–his life. For an enlarged heart is something that doesn’t manifests itself over night, and obvious symptoms like high blood pressure, too, should have been detected.

The question here is are the athletes getting the proper screenings in their pre-camp physicals. Or if the physician attending to CN missed something.

With that being said I hope for the betterment of other athletes in the future are receiving a serious clean bill of health before taking the field. With so much at stake, like their lives, the coaches and athletic director should look to see that they are.

A good coach or athletic director, I would think, would be looking into what went wrong with CN pre-camp physical.

Well thank goodness Colt clarified the Jessica Simpson situation. I can’t even believe it made it on the news last night. Nothing againts Ms. Simpson, but Colt’s ex-gf, the one from the Big Island is waaaaay hotter.

Anyway, can someone tell me what is a nickelback? I would browse thru my “Football 4 Dummies” book again but I figure I’d ask here instead. Thanks 🙂

  59. A-House August 15, 2009 4:51 pm

    Royal Crown:

I was told that many individuals who exercise a lot have an enlarged heart; some are bigger than others and depending on the individual medical history this condition may or may not be serious.

I have an enlarged heart that sometimes, according to my doctor, skips a beat here and there, but I do not have high clorestral or blood pressure so this may help me stay well.

    what is a nickelback?

5th denfensive back. When the sixth DB comes in, they call his the “dime-back”. 😀

  63. βρεω808 August 15, 2009 5:08 pm

I was told that many individuals who exercise a lot have an enlarged heart; some are bigger than others ….

Wait. Not all Tsaikos excersize “a lot” but most still have HUGE hearts!!! 😀

  64. Coqui poke August 15, 2009 5:14 pm

Nickel back …defensive back substituted into a game in a passing situation to replace a linebacker thereby resulting in a defense with five rather than the normal four defensive backs; mostly a college or pro term

Dime back ..defensive back substituted into a game in a passing situation to replace a linebacker thereby resulting in a defense with six rather than the five defensive backs of a nickel package; mostly a college or pro term

Den get Blaze… he is the get on my back back, who will lead da way!

Sounds like you sometimes have heart palpations? I know when my sugars are too high it skips a beat. Even when having high anxiety, stress or dehydration would give me heart palpations, which according to my doctor is normal. What your saying about athletes having enlarged hearts are true (read where Lance Armstrong’s is abnormally enlarged)

Assimilating the info from the article about CN and the fact that he didn’t know about his condition before taking the field made me concerned.

Dragged my aching body home, showered and collapsed in my bean bag chair with my feet elevated. Drifted off to nap for about 30 minutes. Thanks again for patnah-ing up with me as we raked and bagged nine HEAVY bags of leaves and trash. Hard to believe the lower campus employs only two men to maintain the huge campus area. FYI, A-House doesn’t recommend we volunteer for the power-washing. We would be in the shade, BUT he was serious when he claimed that the industrial-sized power washers can best be managed by MEN. (hint, hint) Ok you strapping virile macho Tsaiko MEN…A-House wants to power-wash shoulder to shoulder with you next year. BTW, the mist generated by the washers does wonders for your skin.

M/M Jim Donovan – Mahalo nui loa for the onolicious steak/chicken lunch. And a special thank you to the two fellas and crew and manning the BBQ station, Terry and her staff for coordination efforts and Virginia Hinshaw (upper campus) for the nice t-shirts.

Lastly, special prayers for those Warriors dinged and nursing injuries. I know which ones you are and will be praying for your speedy and complete recovery. Do what it takes to heal properly. That is top priority. Imua Warriors!!

  76. Garret August 15, 2009 7:37 pm

Congratulations to Ryan Mouton for his INT return for a TD in the Titans’ preseason game!

A pair of Titans rookies helped seal the victory. Javon Ringer, an All-American at Michigan State, ran 37 yards for a TD in the third period, and Ryan Mouton picked off Freeman’s pass and ran it back 29 yards for a TD in the fourth.

  77. Garret August 15, 2009 7:38 pm

David Veikune was one of the first backups into Cleveland’s preseason game.

Eric Mangini replaced the first defensive line with C.J. Mosley, Louis Leonard and Corey Williams. That Williams lined up at right end was odd. He’d been exclusively on the left side. Linebacker David Veikune and safety Hamza Abdullah were among the first batch of replacements, too.

  78. Garret August 15, 2009 7:39 pm

The reporter gets to watch every Cleveland practice and says that Veikune has had the best camp of their backup inside LBs.

Hey, Tony: Who is working on the second team at inside linebacker . . . David Veikune, Beau Bell or Leon Williams? How do they look? — Michael Conway, Canada, Alaska

Hey, Michael: Veikune and Bell have been working at inside linebacker, along with Marcus Benard, Kaluka Maiava and Phillip Hunt. According to the depth chart, Williams is listed as third-string outside linebacker behind David Bowens and Alex Hall. Of all the players mentioned, Veikune appears to be having the best camp.

The biggest thing about UH helping out WAC schools by moving kickoffs earlier is that many WAC schools are having *major* budget problems. Remember, not too long about there was a serious movement to eliminate football for SJSU, and both SJSU and Fresno State have major budget problems. If the Cal State schools drop football due to budget problems, the WAC is not a viable conference.

Reduced revenues and a corresponding reduction in spending highlight the 2009-10 Fresno State athletics budget.

More of both loom in September.

That’s when the Fresno State Athletic Corp. board, which oversees Bulldogs finances, is expected to debate how an already tight budget will handle athletics’ share of university-wide revenue cuts mandated by the state budget crisis.

Athletic director Thomas Boeh said in February that the program was on track for a nearly $1.2 million deficit. He said he was implementing cost-cutting measures, but gave few details.

  81. Garret August 15, 2009 7:44 pm

Destin Stewart’s high school coach blames poor communication from UH for Destin’s UH eligibility problems.

Stewart didn’t meet all the academic requirements for admission to Hawaii, but Douglass coach Willis Alexander says Hawaii’s staff didn’t communicate to Stewart and Douglass what the requirements were.

“In my honest opinion, I think they oversigned,” Alexander said. “He stayed here for summer school and did things right.

“They dropped the ball. They never told us he needed to take the written portion of the ACT.”

  82. Garret August 15, 2009 7:46 pm

Wisconsin’s top backups at FS and SS have just been suspended indefinitely. It they are ineligible for the UH game, their lack of secondary depth could be important in their UH game.

Fifth-year senior safeties Shane Carter and Aubrey Pleasant have been suspended indefinitely from the University of Wisconsin football team, coach Bret Bielema said Saturday.

Bielema didn’t elaborate on what led to suspensions, although he did say neither player would return to the team before the end of preseason training camp. Carter and Pleasant will be replaced immediately on the team’s 105-player training camp roster.

Carter, the backup to Chris Maragos at free safety, has 98 tackles and nine interceptions in 37 career games (20 starts). Bielema said redshirt freshman Shelton Johnson got the most reps at free safety with the second-team defense during Saturday morning’s practice.

Carter was suspended for bowl practices and the Champs Sports Bowl last December for violating unspecified team rules.

Pleasant, the backup to Jay Valai at strong safety, has 80 tackles in 41 career games (14 starts).

  83. Garret August 15, 2009 7:48 pm

Only 44 of the 120 D-IA football teams have their practices fully open to the media during football season.

According to research done by the Navy sports information department, of the 120 FBS schools, only 44 are open to the media during the football season without some kind of time limitation (there are 24 with time constraints, like first 15 minutes, last 30, etc.), meaning 52 are closed to the media in-season (50 BCS members).

  84. Garret August 15, 2009 7:49 pm

Looks like the Warriors will be asked to shake hands with Central Arkansas players before their game.

Coast to coast, players and coaches from each pair of opposing teams are being urged to walk onto the field for a pre-kickoff handshake. See folks? We can all play nice.

Officials hope it sets a tone for sportsmanlike behavior on the field and in the stands.

The “Tsaiko heart” is nearly impossible to define or measure. It beats constantly in rythum to the 5 F’s on any given day or night.

It is near limitness is giving and caring for others including our own and their families and the Warrior coaching staff and players. Jim D is part of that group.

How can one define what motivates this group of men and women who come from so many different backgrounds, occupations, locales, etc?

It is a “family” of untold love and devotion for each other and, some say, closer than blood relatives.

And, the Tsaiko heart beat has touched so many outside of the group including the members of the 2007 WAC Softball Championship team. It is truly a force to be reckoned with and we are proud to a part of it.

  86. Garret August 15, 2009 8:03 pm

    A-House,

Thank you and the rest of the volunteers who helped clean up UH today. I know that you have been asking to be able to volunteer like this for a long time, so I’m glad JD finally made it possible for UH fans to volunteer this way.

This book excerpt describes how Abner Doubleday did not actually
invent baseball in Cooperstown–that was all fiction created to promote tourism for Cooperstown and to promote professional baseball in the US. Cooperstown was picked because Edward Clark (partner in the Singer Sewing Machine company) had moved there because his wife had been raised in that rural village.

Study found that Utah saved $1.8 million from its annual electricity bill and prevented 12,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere by having their state government workers go to a 4-day workweek (40 hours over 4 days instead of 5). The workers seem happier and have more time with their families, use less sick leave, and exercise more…maybe more governments or companies should look at this.

Whoa! Haven’t seen a slow day like this since…nevah. I am so proud to have been a part of the make-over crew at the UH quarry today. These folks were crazy working! Some of the coaches came over after practice and were just power houses. OMG There were also a lot of young adults and I can’t give them enough credit for their energy and hard work.

JD gets his share of potshots because of his visibility. But, I would not hesitate to support him anytime he asks. No one outworks the guy. And no one is more caring about the people he works with. I would bet the house that he was the guy who got the brewskis to go with the wonderful lunch for all the workers (those over 21) when he heard about our yearning for a cold one in the hot sun.

“It’s a small world”….found out at the volunteers lunch that a long time assistant coach for the wahine softball team is also my teammate on our over 60 fast pitch team…John Nakamura.

Finally, before I put my tired body to bed, I am in possession of a picture of Slugger’s toes. No no no…no fetishes, but she was showing off the Warrior Green toenail polish she had on. Now, I’m debating whether I should send it to ST to publish on the blog.

    Good nite ALL

Ferd wrote a great article this morning on Greg Alexander.

ST wrote a sad article this morning on Brashton Satele. Hoping for the best.

  118. bighilofan2 August 16, 2009 6:29 am

    ST, gang

    Garrett’s #81 concerns me ALOT</b?

lets see if i got dis ting right.
Coach Mack went to Destin Stewart’s high school, talka got da goods, da kid commit, only Coach Mack neva get backup from da paypawok side!
I mean, dat was no backup

Coach Mack got da kid to commit, IIRC, but we don’t get da paypawok in odor, da kid goes to summer school and we don’t know anyting about it till da last minute?

    what is up with that?

  119. bighilofan2 August 16, 2009 6:57 am

okay, wen make myself boilin mad!

looking into the 2/5/09 commit time frame, realize Coach was still in the process of hiring Tormey, Shaw, and Smith, rearranging things here and there… acknowledge Coach had his hands full on multiple fronts during recruit season this year. wishin Coach the best, hopin he gets backup from da odda coaches. little things can come back to eat you. losing a high profile guy like Stewart, who wanted to come here, and then having his high school coach in Okla talkin like that, usin UH and overreachin in da same bret…. pfttt… not good.

But, and this is what is jackin my jaws, if we’d acknowledge da problem in a timely way, maybe coulda even fixed dat befo it became a problem. It coulda been fixed, dat is wat is boilin my beans ..

da upper campus guys coulda been helping da UHADept befo it came a problem, not just wearin nice clothes and ackin like day all geniuses, an when da crap hits da fans, ackin like its da coaches’ fault. easy to just blame Tuioti. but the reality is that the slow pokin is above his pay grade.

I went upper campus and tried to get signed up for classes early this past spring. The paperwork and da third tier help was atrocious, if its not written down, da attitude is no can, and da 3rd tier won’t let you get to da second tier, or even da top tier, cuz day gotta figure their self importance is all about dat, self importance. DS expozed em, impotent!

So, when is the next Karaoke night? Cattle call? party?

Being under General Order 1B for a few months now (not allowed to drink any alcohol). Looking forward to having a good cool one.

College football plans team wide pregame handshakes

By The Associated Press Aug 14, 5:22 pm EDT

College football teams are planning to start the season off on a courteous note.

As part of a sportsmanship initiative, the American Football Coaches Association and NCAA are encouraging schools to arrange team wide handshakes on the field before kickoff.

Grant Teaff, executive director of the AFCA, says college football players and teams are in a pressure-packed environment and that encouraging respect and sportsmanship is important.

Coaches are required to shake before and after games, but having players do it in an organized way is new. The handshake is only planned for the first week of games, and is not mandatory, though Teaff says all schools have been asked to participate.

Personally I don’t like this idea. I think the way they’ve been doing it for the past 100 years, where the coaches meet before and after the game and where the team captains exchange handshakes after the coin flip are enough.

My argument is let the teams increase their momentum before games. Let their emotions and focus be on the start of the game and not have stoppages for handshakes between players. Sure it’s viewed as a gesture of sportsmanship, but I think it dilutes the intensity and buildup for a game to all of sudden turn on a switch and tell the players to shake hands with the opponents that they’re going to do battle with.

Subjugating the players in becoming submissive and subjugating their will, when they’re in the midst of being all fired up before the games doesn’t make sense. Handshakes after the game are fine. Before the game handshakes involving all the players from both sides would be so pretentious and fake that it would be stupid having them.

When you look into the mind of a football player, where the prevailing premises is kill or be killed, having a ceremonious acts, like pregame handshakes, induces a moment of intimacy between the players that from a players prospective I’d say it wouldn’t feel right…and from a fan’s prospective of witnessing this act of players shaking hands before the game it wouldn’t look right. So why have them?

I am happy to see, though, they’re having this bad idea for only the first game of the season.

  159. K. Mark Takai August 16, 2009 11:15 am

Thanks HiFlyer. Yes, the bulk of all our units will be coming home over the next few weeks. There are a number of Soldiers who decided to extend their tours in the Middle East and they will return in about nine months. There are a few Soldiers who out-processing may take a few days longer here at Ft. Hood and they will be back in a few weeks. But, for the nost part, the bulk of the 1,700 of us will be coming home within the next few days. In fact, the first plane load is set to return today in a few hours.

Thanks wafan, Brew808, D1shima, and Pomai. Yes, it will be great to be home. Nothing . . . absolutely nothing beats Hawaii.

So, what are the plans for Vegas? I will be assisting with the Letterwinners Golf Tournament on Friday and we will be at the Boyd’s tailgate before the game, but is there anything that the Tsai-kos are doing?

Been hearing great things about Dana and the Wahine Basktball Program. Looking forward to seeing more than a couple hundred in the stands. I think Capitolist Doc will be please with the increased attendance.

Heard the football team is doing well. The O-line is looking good. The defense is beginning to gel. What are the predictions? I heard 9 wins is the goal this year. Should be exciting.

When the screen came back to life, I was on the main blog page listing all thirty or so bloggers. You teckheads out there – what causes this? How can it be avoided?

Great workday yesterday – my work partners included Coach Nash and Coach Trapasso, and a gorgeous hunk who was identified as Strength & Conditioning Guy. BTW – does he only work the football team or is he available for all athletes?

Our crews started at the Wai`alae entrance and went all the way down to the softball field where others who’d started at the Dole Street entrance met up with us.

Dayem – bad enough that we had to deal with close to two tons of leaves and branches -16 truckoads -, but the STUFF – primarily plastic & styrofoam – that people threw away really torked me off.

Alas,.it’s a workday for me so it’s back to the nose-2-the-grindstone for another six hours.

  194. Garret August 16, 2009 2:38 pm

    Rep. Takai,

Great to hear from you! You and everyone else about to return to Hawaii must be so excited! Thank you for your service to our country.

  195. Garret August 16, 2009 2:39 pm

UH recruit was mentioned in the Maui News.

That was more than enough for Calen Friel — an all-over-the-field linebacker who stands 6-2 and weighs 235 pounds— and the rest of the Kailua defense. Friel is being recruited by the University of Hawaii and has about five scholarship offers, according to Kailua coach Gary Rosolovich.

Rosolovich said that his defense starts with Friel.

”Calen is a huge presence on that field and he is the leader of that defense,” Rosolovich said. ”And, again, that defense did a great job tonight.”

Roloos agreed, saying of Friel, ”He flies to the ball really well.”

  196. Garret August 16, 2009 2:40 pm

RGM fumbled on a kickoff return in his last game.

B.C. (1-4) led by a point at halftime, but the West’s last-place team unravelled with four turnovers — and no points — in the second half. Jarious Jackson fumbled on a sneak attempt at the Hamilton goal-line, Ryan Grice-Mullen coughed up the ball on a kick return, and quarterback Buck Pierce tossed two interceptions.

The miscues led to 13 Ticats points that were the difference in the game.

  197. βρεω808 August 16, 2009 2:40 pm

    Hi curveball – How’s your “slider”? 😀

Have you made it to every Warrior practice? I’d be curious to know if there’s any dedicated ones that have attended every session. SJ… Myki? 😯

  198. Garret August 16, 2009 2:43 pm

It is great that RGM seems to be out of his coach’s doghouse and is getting time at receiver in addition to returner. It would have been nice if his QB hit him when he was open for a TD.

Then things started to happen in a big way for the Lions, as Jackson threw two touchdown strikes to Paris Jackson and a third to Emmanuel Arceneaux even as he missed Jackson and Ryan Grice-Mullen on two surefire touchdowns and failed to find open receivers on two, two-point conversions.

  199. Garret August 16, 2009 2:44 pm

Ryan Mouton talked about his INT that he returned for a TD.

And with one big catch, rookie cornerback Ryan Mouton made sure his name would be mentioned among the top backup options at his position.

“When we came out here, it was about trying to contribute somewhere,” said Mouton, a third-round pick from Hawaii. “I think we’re doing a good job of that and hopefully, we can keep improving.”

Mouton intercepted a pass by rookie quarterback Josh Freeman and returned it untouched for a 29-yard touchdown.

“My eyes got big when I saw it. I caught it, hoping to get down the sideline, not get caught,” Mouton said.

Garret – I meant to comment to your “off-topic” posts last night. There have been two important discoveries announced this past week – the “blue” iron/Ni rock on Mars, and the methane “volcanoes” or “storms” on the moon – Titan. Very important data for cosmology of the solar system. IMHO 😀

  201. βρεω808 August 16, 2009 2:47 pm

    :oop: …to your… –> …on your…. 😳

  202. Garret August 16, 2009 2:47 pm

I’m glad that UH isn’t playing U-Dub this season…they are teaching their OL to cut block.

Pass-rushing defensive ends hate facing it.

Offensive linemen don’t much care for delivering it.

Nobody questions the effectiveness of cut-blocking – chopping down defensive players below the waist. Some of the best offenses in the NFL or college football utilize it, knowing the backlash it creates when somebody gets injured.

It’s a scheme the Washington Huskies will use this season.

  203. cheepono August 16, 2009 2:47 pm

    Brew808,

I didn’t see the news about Titan’s methane…I just saw the blue rock article because Gmail had it as a recommended article for me. Very interesting, especially considering all the other things we’ve seen about Titan.

I think 9.4 secs will be broken by the time he’s done…. IMHO 😀

  207. Garret August 16, 2009 2:52 pm

Chase Daniel will play in Washington’s next game.

Zorn declined to reveal his plan for the quarterbacks against the Ravens, but Jason Campbell’s outing could be short, he said. Todd Collins, Colt Brennan and Chase Daniel will share time in some sort of rotation.

  208. buffoman August 16, 2009 3:06 pm

Looking at the latest edition of SI, one can see that the WAC is not highly regarded and UH is even less thought of. The thing that is not helpful to UH as I see it is that as the start finishing at the bottom of the WAC and as dollars in supprot of athltics gets smaller, for the small folks, Hawaii becomes more vulnerable. If the WAC decides to re-organize, UH may be out as it is a cost item that many do not want (travel to play in Hawaii).

Bottom line: Hawaii has very little time to start winning. It has to constantly challenge for the WAC crown and has to constantly compete on the same level as BSU. Love ’em or hate ’em, BSU has the best chances to change the landscape of the WAC and when that happens, UH may be the most vulnerable, especially if they are not a highly, visible, well regarded mid major, who ranks with BSU.

Absolutely beautiful to hear you folks are out of Kuwait and in transit. Everyone’s spun up…especially the FRG’s of course. Re: # 197

Brew ~ sj & myki have attended more fb practices then the rest of us. On Friday afternoon I was surprised that me and wafan were the only ones there! (Tsai Master of course, was taking notes at his usual post location – the tree).

The next morning, attendance was at maximum SRO, with the Tsaiko Nation leading the way!

Don Weir stopped by our humble side line spot. Mr. Weir is a man who can make things happen for the Warrior faithful. He pledged to help us Tsaiko-size the procurement process by providing Pomai with a Wish list from the coaches.
