BTW, Blaze does have “Super Hero” status in my book.
And Boise St. will remember his past seasons hits.

What would a good nickname be?

And Boise St. will remember his past seasons hits for the next game here in the islands.

Top 5 have the fastest fingers in the West.

Bring on practice on the outside turf.

  16. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 6:55 am

    Stretch:
Oh, I’m not worried about the rain. I’ve got sjmacro and myki to cover practice for me if it rains.
We just want to make sure we have an actual crew to run the show. You never know if the bosses will reassign the crew to cover the rain. Just like yesterday, when our photog scooted away after 8 minutes to cover … well, I’m not sure what she covered. But she spent less time at practice than me.

  17. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 6:56 am

Would it be jinxing things to report it’s sunny in Maunawili right now?

  18. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 6:58 am

    PONO:
You need more confidence. You’re acting like a non-BCS school. You’re deserving of top 5, not 10.

  19. rage777 August 11, 2009 7:00 am

    Blaze,

What are you doing differently this year to try and avoid all those pesky injuries you have been getting?

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid August 11, 2009 7:02 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! πŸ™‚

    bhf2-
Tanks for da reassuring words about Comanche. Dat wonderful lil beast is so happy to have such a caring counsel in da ohana. So you went out paddling today? I’m glad you guys came through this thing with nothing more than a scare.

  21. Buffoman August 11, 2009 7:03 am

Truly, ST, what kind of chances do you give this team to be competitive, really, to contend for the WAC title?

  22. whitey August 11, 2009 7:04 am

ST, no need worry about rain cause no going get any and my friend, sunshine, will make your day brighter and happier. one thing tho, do not fall asleep when he is shining, otherwise you going get major ouch, ouch, ouch!!!!

  23. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 7:05 am

And now there’s a big cloud covering.
    Bachi lives.

  24. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 7:07 am

    Buffoman:
I think the offense is going to be really good, and the defense will be aggressive and feisty.
But I only see one side, so I’ve nothing to compare.
Only thing I know is that at the WAC Football Preview, each team β€” even Idaho β€” was jacked about its chances. And Kaepernick is a big dude.
But UH fans should be happy that Boise State and Fresno State have to play here.

  25. whitey August 11, 2009 7:10 am

ST, no worry, that’s just sunshine changing clothes and he no like be embaressed, so he put up a curtain.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 7:10 am

    From Rick Brockwell:

I coached Alex Dunnachie in 2007 u/17 Aussie Rules competition in Melbourne Australia. We had a practice match pre season in march that year where Alex kicked the footy 75 yards consistently scoring goals at will from outside the 50meter mark ,certainly he is an outstanding talent, any more info you need or have please send on to this return address.

  27. Stephen Tsai August 11, 2009 7:11 am

That should be UH’s motto: Throw the footy

  28. whitey August 11, 2009 7:13 am

    Morning, Tsaikos!

For those who requested DVDs, I sent them all out. If you requested and haven’t received, I probably messed up. Email me again, and get it out to you.

  34. Garret August 11, 2009 7:41 am

    Blaze,

Have the coaches talked with you about reducing your reps in practices and/or games in order to try to help you avoid injuries? We know you go all-out on every play, so maybe rotating in someone to give you short breaks could help.

  35. SJ Bobkins August 11, 2009 8:05 am

Good Morning you lucky people! I’m confused most of the time, but in reading the posts from Friday I noticed that a few folks referred to coach Tomey in reports from fall practice. Unless I’m nuts too, Dick Tomey former Rainbow and Arizona head man was still mired in mediocracy at football-apathetic San Jose St. Is the Warrior coach, Dick’s son? Also while on the Spartans, does anyone remember their former coach Dave Baldwin? I liked the guy and just wondered what happened to him.
On Saturday, I noticed the first post containing a little sarcasm and a cutting edge in reference to some other posters. The absence of such posts is one of the reasons I’m here and I think the world of all of you. Most blogs contain 80-90% attack posts, rather than the basic decency you show people you deal with face to face. This is a special place because of our fearless leader ST, the closeness among the players, coaches and fans connecting here, and respecting each other. I’m not calling down the guy with the posts, just using them to point out how unique this gang is.

    Aloha Tunda…. Errr… I mean Blaze,

After coming off several injuries in the 07 and the 08 seasons, have you changed your training routine to either strengthen the problem areas where you were injured or have you changed your routine to not put too much stress on those areas?

    COLT WATCH:

    http://blog.redskins.com/2009/08/11/morning-practice-chris-horton-bounty-hunter/1#c20817895

So aside from the Michael Vick news, the big development at morning practice was that Chris Horton picked off Colt Brennan during drills, earning the bounty that Brennan mentioned the other day.

“Fred Smoot was saying if I get through camp, it would be twenty bucks a day if I didn’t get picked,” Brennan said. “I was telling ’em, man, I only have one more day left.” Brennan has made it this far without throwing an interception in live drills.

“Finally today,” he said, “I got rushed out of the pocket, didn’t really keep my eyes downfield, tried to squeeze one in there, and finally Chris Horton stepped in front of it.”

Brennan reacted to the news with his characteristic… Colt-y-ness (Note to self: find synonym for “bravado”), saying, “That actually put a smile on my face, ’cause I got that monkey off my back before Thursday’s game.” He shrugged, then added, “I’d rather play good against Baltimore than be down a hundred bucks right now.”

Brennan said that Horton hadn’t talked any trash about his accomplishment — “No, no, Fred Smoot took care of the talking. That’s his job. Chris Horton’s young, he don’t talk.” — but Horton did have a few words on the subject when I caught up with him later on.

“I didn’t even know about it,” Horton said, “but I just saw him downstairs and he told me he owes me a hundred bucks. I told him I’d take that in all ones.”

This was disappointing to hear, as I figured Horton had been gunning for the interception and was thrilled to get it, but he shook that idea off. “I wasn’t out there thinking, ‘Oh, man, Colt’s in there. I gotta pick him off.’ I was just out there, I was reading formations, and then I had a jump on the play. I knew what was possibly gonna be run, so I just jumped the play and look what I found.”

What do you think was causing the injuries of the past?

    Prayin’ for ya, man!

  40. Kazz August 11, 2009 8:11 am

How did you like the transition from the cleats you wore in 2007 to the Under Armour cleats? As a linebacker do you feel they provide enough support?

  46. rage777 August 11, 2009 8:24 am

  47. rage777 August 11, 2009 8:25 am

Are you applying for a medical hardship year? If so, why not do it now since it takes the NCAA forever to approve those things?

  48. rage777 August 11, 2009 8:32 am

    Blaze,

Last question: As a Castle alumni, do you consider yourself part of the famous Castle alumni? Like Allen Allen, Bryan Clay, Jade Stice (Miss Saigon), Ace Yonamine (guy in The Replacements), Ron Bright, Garret, etc.

Speaking of those Warrior Jack antennae thingies.. anybody ever see one on a car?

  51. Kazz August 11, 2009 8:46 am

    Made,

    I’ve seen a few cars.

I have mine attached to my rear-view mirror. Jack balls lose their face over time with the wind and rain and the Warrior Jacks are so nice that I don’t want to ruin it. Besides, someone might steal it anyway.

  59. royal crown August 11, 2009 9:19 am

On 1420, Bobby’s Show, featured an interview with Rich Miano earlier this morning (645 am).

“Competition is intense, the defensive backs and safeties are battling,” Rich is telling Bobby. “Lewis Walker has emerged the last couple of days”.

“The players are learning their assignments and responsibilities,” he goes on to say.”We’re evaluating the talent and looking at film. All positions are open.”

Miano alluded that the health of Walker’s mother as maybe fueling and inspiring his play.

Miano goes on to say that the DB and safeties have to be comfortable in their techniques and assignments.

“It’s hard to play fast when you’re thinking,” Miano says.”A player that’s timed at 4.5 but is out there thinking his game speed in nearer to 4.6 and 4.7″.

Miano gives the example of Richard Torres as being one player as being one that plays faster on the field because he doesn’t expend wasted time thinking. Half jokingly Miano said Torres could play any position on the field.

Miano also let’s on that the players are picking up the pace, and continuing the tempo from where they were in the spring but conceded that the learning curb is higher in camp.

Other than commenting on a few players, Miano reserves commenting on how this year’s defensive backfield compares to years past other than to say that they’re fast and they’ll hit you.

“Brown is physical,” Miano says.”He’ll hit you”.

He also mentions Silva, Smith, Estes,Hopkins, Davis, Gomes, Bryant are all in the mix.

Of Estes, Miano says,”This kid is a physical specimen, one of the fastest players, as fast as L. Peters, and he’s very athletic, where if he wasn’t playing football he’d probably be on scholarship playing soccer”.

Assimilating Miano conversation and remembering the OL coach also alluding to how he wants to teach his players to go out there and be comfortable and not waste and expend so much time thinking is a better methodology the Warriors are adopting (IMO). I think the players are seeing this picture, too, where if they hesitate and think the opposing player will blow right pass them. This concept of teaching I like.

Finally, although Miano didn’t exactly say this: “There’s no substitute for experience”, he did go on to say. ” Great athleticism in the players come over come this”.

I agree. I like this interview, for it shows that the team has a lot of promise.

On the progression of Colt Brennan and where Chase Daniel stands:
    (Coach Zorn:)
“Right now I don’t see clear lines. I see Chase Daniel really improving, I see him performing. Colt Brennan in the last three or four practices has really come on as well. The closer we’re getting to these games, the more his concentration level goes up because he knows he’s going in. So he’s very excited, great competition level there. We’ll see, they’re going to lay it all out there on Thursday night.”

Miami’s coach talked about the close battle between Bess and Camarillo for the starting WR spot.

It’s rare that an NFL coach admits his squad has two receivers who have the exact same skill set, but that happened on Tuesday when Tony Sparano was asked to compare and contrast Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess.

Sparano struggled to find the slightest differences in Camarillo and Bess, who appear to be competing for the starting spot opposite Ted Ginn Jr.

The best he could do was say Bess is a “shade quicker,” but Camarillo is “more savvy.”

“But you’re really comparing apples to apples,” Sparano said, pointing out both receiver catch the ball well, have good knowledge of the Dolphins’ offense, and compete at a very high level.

But which of the two will end up starting for the Dolphins?

In the Dolphins initial depth chart, which came out on Monday, Bess was listed ahead of Camarillo. However, Sparano said that has a lot to do with the fact Bess finished the season as the starter when Camarillo was sidelined by his ACL injury.

Sparano said the depth chart is something he’ll solidify within the next 10 practices, which leads him up to the Aug. 22 exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers.

When asked when the depth chart will become more meaningful to him, Sparano said “Atlanta,” referring to the Sept. 13th season-opener. “It’ll become real meaningful then.”

Hawaii Bowl: Tulsa — The Golden Hurricane lost a lot of talent from last season and is breaking in a young team, but Tulsa’s offense is always dynamic, which makes the Golden Hurricane a dangerous foe.

Thanks for your reply last nite. I was trying to get it right so I could amend my post for Nalani. Nothing worse than wrong info  I was just half alert when they started the drill. BAM Meatoga hit #56 with the club and was going full speed for the β€œQB” bag where he made a U turn and sped full on back to the line of scrimmage as if he was chasing the play. That was impressive!

    Nalani

Please apologize to Kahai for me!!! He wasn’t the guy who missed the block!

The following are the top kids the ‘Bows are recruiting for 2010. It looks as if QB and LB are the biggest needs then WR. There is alot of speed especially with the Linebackers 4.6, 4.7, 40’s outstanding. These kids ar the 3-Star recruits, there are no 4 or 5, what that eventually means I don’t know. The rest of the list has around 6-8 more QB prospects. I don’t think they have a great deal of faith in the current back-up QB’s

MLB Dustin Elisara (Kapolei HS) Kapolei, HI 6-2/225/4.75
MLB Soma Vainuku (Eureka Senior HS) Eureka, CA 6-0/250/4.62
QB Andrew Manley (Leilehua HS) Wahiawa, HI 6-3/225/4.90
OLB Alani Fua (Oaks Christian HS) Westlake Village, CA 6-5/210/4.60
DT Sani Fuimaono (Punahou School) Honolulu, HI 6-1.5/270
OLB Ofa Fifita (Arroyo Valley HS) San Bernardino, CA 6-0/215/4.70
S Shaydon Akuna (Kapolei HS) Kapolei, HI 6-3/209/4.60
QB Kevin Spain (Paradise Valley HS) Phoenix, AZ 6-2/185/4.9
WR Taz Stevenson (Mililani HS) Mililani, HI 6-2/190
DE Tony Washington (Los Osos HS) Rancho Cucamonga, CA 6-4/225

  114. LizKauai August 11, 2009 12:23 pm

Dang! The show started before 12:30!

  115. Garret August 11, 2009 12:23 pm

Congratulations to RGM for being runner up for the CFL special teams player of the week.

B.C. kicker Sean Whyte won special teams honours for connecting on four field goal attempts in the Lions’ win against the Riders. Whyte hit field goals from 44, 43, 33 and 19 yards, and added three converts to contribute 15 points to the victory.

Edmonton running back and kick returner Arkee Whitlock and Lions wide receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen were also nominated for the award.

  116. Garret August 11, 2009 12:24 pm

RGM did really well on special teams last week, which is why he was nominated.

And the dreadheaded Grice-Mullen, 22, invoked dread in the Riders with his dangerous kick return potential.

β€œOne of these games, he [Grice-Mullen] is going to be unbelievable,” Buono said. β€œHe had 160 yards in returns and he could have had 400. He was close to going all the way two or three times.”

Young Lions, old Lions, together they put B.C. back in the hunt.

  117. Garret August 11, 2009 12:26 pm

Feature story on RGM and his importance as a returner.

Ryan Grice-Mullen and Joe Theismann. There’s two names you probably never thought you’d see used together. And no wonder. The former being a 22-year-old receiver with dreadlocks; the latter a clean-cut quarterback who hasn’t played a down since before Grice-Mullen was born.

But somehow Wally Buono managed to do it on Monday. The B.C. Lions general manager and coach was making a point Grice-Mullen shouldn’t think any less of himself as the Lions’ returner than he would as an every-down receiver.

β€œThe punt returner and kick returner is as valuable as any offensive player, maybe more so than any offensive player other than the quarterback,” said Buono

β€œJoe Theismann was a returner before he was an NFL quarterback,” continued Buono, in reference to the former CFL star who cracked the Washington Redskins roster first as a punt returner before making his name behind the centre.

β€œGrice-Mullen can be a great returner before he can ever be a great receiver.”

It’s a whole new way of thinking for the University of Hawaii star.

β€œIn college my head coach really didn’t want me back returning kicks and punts because I was too valuable to the offence β€” I was one of his main guys,” said Grice-Mullen. β€œBut it’s different here. Here, it’s about the best guy to help your team have success.”

    Shauna,

I am in San Diego and where I live we are surrounded by Jack-in-the-Box locations…5 or 6 of them within 15 minutes of our house. My wife and I just hit a nearby one or two locations for lunch and we’ll go to another tonight for dinner. We won’t give our kids the tacos (they will have something much healthier), which means more tacos for my wife and me…

    Shauna,

Thank you for helping out with the chats! I’m glad that Brashton showed up to make it a double chat.

My kids are 6 and 4. The Jack-in-the-Box locations I went to weren’t crowded at all. I’ve found out that when you go to the locations in some places the people care less about the free deals…amazing how two locations just 5 minutes apart by car can have such different lengths of lines. My wife and I were the only people with coupons for the free tacos when we were there during lunch time (right around noon), and I’ve been at other places in the past where everyone is there for just the free stuff.

  128. lava August 11, 2009 12:48 pm

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2009/8/10/FB_0810095013.aspx

  131. SJ Bobkins August 11, 2009 12:51 pm

Al, it depends on a QB being better suited for the Pro-Set, the run option, run and shoot, or the Spread. A guy who is used to the shotgun, and has the ability to run would be ideal in the spread. You saw how Richie Rich’s offense couldn’t win using a pro-set QB trying to run the spread at Michgan. IMO Colt didn’t have the speed to get away from pursuit and he isn’t going to need it in the NFL. If your QB can run, the spread works best because you have more skill players “in the box”. My guess is that the “Mouse Davis run and shoot” requires a guy with a big arm, and less on accuracy since he always has a post receiver, and doesn’t use his back or TE as a short or procession receiver, the guy doesn’t have to be all that mobile either but he has to have a quick release. The knock on most drafted QB’s is arm strength, which would seem to favor the run and shoot guys.
There were a pile of verbals among the guys off Scout, and I felt like the “Bows had at least a 50-50 of picking up the kids. With your turf and good speed, these LB’s could fly, I hope Mac can get all of them.

  132. Shauna August 11, 2009 1:04 pm

Garret: Yeah, it is ODD how one location can be packed and the one five minutes away can be empty… I hope they do this taco deal every Tuesday! πŸ˜€

    NICE SHOW, THANKS!

    COLT WATCH:

pocampo in ExtremeSkins hit it on the head for me:

“I think we see a different Colt. I’m used to seeing Colt move the pocket pick is WR then throwing it. Not anymore, we should see him drop back from center stay in the pocket moving his head going through is progression, then throwing to a guy that goes to what ever spot the play calls for. No more Improvising while is WRs run to a opening. This O is a lot more mechanical everything has a purpose. This WCO O is a planned game. So to me it looks like CB5 is doing everthing the coach wants him to do. He is under orders. Thats why expect him to be uncomfortable till he gets used to it. Colt will in all honestly stuggle with this till it becomes second nature to him. So the flare where use to won’t be there. So right now he has to prove he can follow orders rather then just throw TDs like where use to. Hope he can adapt. But like last year Colt still has a lot to prove.”

    al
I just found out that the best and quickest linebacker in the bunch:
OLB Alani Fua (Oaks Christian HS) Westlake Village, CA 6-5/210/4.60
gave BYU a verbal. They already had a verbal from Stout a 4 or 5 star LB from this same high school. Their recruiting class for 2010 will be unreal.
What can the Warriors do that they aren’t already doing to keep the better HI high school kids from mainlanding to BYU, Utah, Washington, or UCLA?
I don’t think any state on a average per 1000 population basis produces the great players that Hawaii does. You add in Poly kids with Hawaii connections living in the western states and the talent pool is huge. I would love to see the ‘Bows keep their own and really prosper, how do we do it?

Just whack me alongside the head if I’m out of line, I was clueless to the idea I was messing things up. I love football time of year and recruiting so much, I get too excited to discuss it, and to learn from everybody else. I’m not a know it all, but a sponge trying to pick your brains.

  167. BG August 11, 2009 4:37 pm

    SJ Bobkins

You did not do anything wrong. BHF2 was just asking what happened to the other guy (not Stephen Tsai). He left momentarily and came back to see (Brashton Satele) gone and only Blaze was on the show.

  168. Loa August 11, 2009 4:44 pm

i haven’t had some good palusami in awhile.

  170. al August 11, 2009 5:55 pm

    sj
not surprised that he is going to byu. lots of prospects will opt for byu because of the church, tradition, and the lifestyle.

and yes byu is having a banner year recruiting for 2010.

i think that mack is on the right track by really going after the local boys. it is up to the current and past players to play a big role in keeping these kids home. and of course we, the fans, community must do our part, go to games, support morally and financially, lobby for better facilities, etc.

    we are getting there.

  171. al August 11, 2009 5:55 pm

i gotta go call jimmy h. he makes the best palusami.

Feature story on Bess and Camarillo and their close battle for the starting WR spot.

“Both of these guys catch it extremely well,” coach Tony Sparano said. “They both have great knowledge of the system, of the coverage. Both play at a high level, so it’s pretty hard to separate them. ”

Offensive coordinator Dan Henning said Bess (5-feet-10, 190 pounds) is physically comparable to Nat Moore, whose strength and compact build helped him last 13 seasons (1974-86) with the Dolphins.

“When you look at Bess from the shoulders down, he’s built,” Henning said. “He works with a tremendous base and he can change direction immediately. He has a chance to play in this league a long time because he’s physically able to take a pounding.

“Camarillo is not as stout. He’s a lot more fragile; he kind of flows into things.”

Bess, who married his college sweetheart in October and became a first-time father in November, spent the summer in South Florida and worked almost daily to hone his craft, even if he had only a machine to launch passes at him. Bess said he takes pride in that kind of effort.

“Now I just need to transfer what I’ve learned in the off-season and bring that to the practice field,” he said.

    3. Idaho
    4. Eastern Michigan
    5. Tennessee
    6. New Mexico State

    8. Iowa State

For ST: Paula will apparently be a guest star on the Ugly Betty show.

Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul is in talks to guest star on Ugly Betty, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Details of Abdul’s role are being kept under wraps but an Ugly insider tells me that she’d be playing a new temp at Mode who bonds with Becki Newton’s Amanda.

The 8 “wild card” acts added to the quarterfinal round of America’s Got Talent unfortunately do *not* include a very deserving girl from Hawaii. So, the show passed her by again…I really do not understand that. The girl they did pass through performed today and she still cannot sing.

The replay of the WB show today had excellent sound quality, but there were periodic problems with the video playback where there would be a pause and then a few words would be repeated.

Both Blaze and Brashton were excellent guests and represented UH well.

Affordable gene scans may be available at all doctor’s offices soon–it took 13 years and $300 million for hundreds of researchers to sequence a genome with the Human Genome Project 6 years ago, and it took a Stanford Professor 1 week and less than $50,000 for him to do the same thing with a single machine!

Researchers unveiled a firefighter tracking prototype that uses a variety of wireless technologies and is currently in the testing phase. This research project began after a tragedy where 6 firefighters were killed while they were just a few feet from an exit because they had no idea where they were and their commanders had no idea where they were so they couldn’t help them escape the fire.

    Jason,

I never realized that the #5 team was always a gag team! I was surprised that Utah State didn’t even get mentioned in the “others” category…how many Bottom 10 lists over the past few years haven’t had Utah State mentioned at all?

scotties tacos…i think they were the first fast food tacos on island. if i recall right, they put a half a slice of american cheese in the middle of those frozen tacos. but, the hot sauce made it work.
