Monday ramblings

Some thoughts:
• While it was surprising to learn that Malcolm Lane will redshirt this season, the move does ease a crowded situation. Backup wideouts Jovonte Taylor, Royce Pollard and Joe Avery are deserving of playing time. And, if needed, UH also can switch Greg Salas back to wideout, opening the way for reserve slotbacks Dustin Blount, Ryan Henry, Jon Medeiros and Jeremiah Ostrowski.
• Center John Estes and middle linebacker Brashton Satele are logical choices to be named co-captains. By position — each makes on-field calls — they are in leadership roles. It will be interesting to see if coach Greg McMackin decides to go with three or four captains. Some suggestions: Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki, Rocky Savaiigaea, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane.
• What about Leon Wright-Jackson as Lane’s replacement at kick returner? We all agree that he looks the best when he’s in the open field. At kick returner, he would field the ball in the open field.
• Once the Warriors begin practicing on the Cooke/Ching surface, it will be difficult to go back to the grass field. Cooke/Ching is weather-proof and, more importantly, it’s closer to the locker room and training room.
• We all make band-camp remarks. But, you know, why not? It would be nice to see the band working out, too.
• … And let’s stimulate the economy. It’s time to think about sending the band to the Nevada game. Or, at least, the San Jose State game.
• Does hurricane insurance cover tropical storms?
• Is a tropical storm the remedy for swine flu? It seems that way from the news coverage.
• Thanks to UnderArmour, the Warriors have new practice jerseys.

And a very happy birthday to Sailor Blue.

It was fun to a punt return duel in the Hall of Fame game between two former UH players: Hawthorne and Mouton.

  2. Stephen Tsai August 10, 2009 6:47 am

I wonder why they didn’t return punts at UH.

    Morning gang

always thought that a great biz would be a “Rent -a- band” when the travel budget is tight.

High School bands in that paticular town could step up in place of a college that doesn’t have the funds to travel there. make some $$ for their school.
Could be a hit. Could be a bust.

Don’t see Leon returning kicks, and Ching field is probably too hot for everyday use.

Sounds like a good idea … for the Mainland.
Might be awkward here if, say, Boise State hired the Punahou or Iolani band to play.

Reactions I’ve heard or read about Lane’s decision to take the year off:

    ST-“Surprising”
ST-“It hasn’t been easy for ML”
    Bobby C-“Unusual”
    A-House-“Intriguing”
    babydaddymama-“It stinks”
    NYUH-“Good choice”
    Lava-“Lane will be missed”
    Jun Tao-“Good luck”
    Garret-“Best wishes to Lane”
    rylen-“Wow”
    Slugger-“Good luck”
    Maverick-“Good luck”
d1島: “Hope Mr. Lane has a successful year hitting the books”.
Da Punchbowl Kid-“The main thing is, we’ll see him next year.”
niho mano-“Malcolm, we the fans will mis you this season”
bighilofan2-“my best wishes to you sir”
wafan-“Good luck and good move, Mr. Lane”
Maynard G. Krebbs-“Some people seem to forget that the players are students first and football players second – or is that being too naive?”
    Maverick-“Students 1st when playing CFB”.
    FloridaTed-“Nothing wrong with Lane’s plans, but”….
Richfromoc-“Please don’t look down on people on wondering why this is happening”.
mctruck-“Malcom Lane, I’m one of your many fans who believes, “you gotta do, what you gotta do.”
    Derek-“I don’t really get it”.
al-“i will wish him the best and his family”.
    royal crown-“it seems odd”.

A majority of the posts convey warmth (which is really good, and which I really like). A few put his decision under the microscope (mine). One was spiteful.

If Lane came upon these responses he’d be overwhelmed that a good majority of the posters wish him well.

  16. NYUH August 10, 2009 7:43 am

    royal crown,

I think that fans recognize the sacrifice that ML made to move here from Germany and acknowledge his efforts on the field. We have also seen some examples of ex-players not having coaching opportunities and/or graduate school opportunities because they haven’t graduated.

And we have a lot of WRs right now who need the reps.

I wonder if James Lofton would have stayed if he knew ML was going to redshirt?

  17. mana alohi August 10, 2009 7:49 am

Time for folks to flee the storm and come to Las Vegas to wait it out. We need the tourist kala. We’ll return the favor and visit Waikiki when the feds decide to test the bomb again, oh yeah, they don’t do that no more. Oh well, we’ll think about visiting again soon anyway.

  20. chawan_cut August 10, 2009 8:06 am

thats a great idea for LWJ.

for the band comments, i think UH will start their practices soon. not sure how it is now with the 2 fields both in useable condition, but they practice usually in the evenings, opposite of the team, so no one knows they’re actually there.

and i believe boise has “hired” local high school bands to play for their team before at aloha stadium. san jose brought their band down to hawaii one year too.

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid August 10, 2009 8:20 am

I think it would be fun to see what LWJ could do at returner. Dat buggah has some jets in the open field.

  22. Maynard G. Krebs August 10, 2009 8:25 am

    Good morning good people!

I assume that there won’t be any practice on Wednesday if the winds are bad and it is pouring. No sense risking colds, flu or pneumonia!

  23. al August 10, 2009 8:30 am

    kick returner candidate…

although he will go on a mission next year, from what i have seen of his highligt reels, i believe the best kick returner we have is none other than true freshman mike wadsworth.

  24. al August 10, 2009 8:34 am

best kick returners are not the fastest guy on the field.
more importantly he has too “see the field”, make the first guy miss, employ his blockers, be quick to cut, have that burst of speed to get through the hole, have enough muscle to shake an arm tackle, and make that last guy drop his pants one on one.

    …chad owens for example.

  25. al August 10, 2009 8:48 am

mouton had a preference of returning ko’s and not punts. cj i thought auditioned for kr in his hawaii days.

why they are returning punts these days is simple….job security.

  26. Committed Road Warrior August 10, 2009 8:52 am

    I echo Maverick’s post #5.

Surely the cost of transporting the UH band to the road games is super expensive. How many band members are on a typical travel squad anyways? 50? More? Less?

It all adds up, especially when going from Honolulu to some of the more remote places in the WAC.

  27. Slugger August 10, 2009 8:53 am

Great article on Coach Jones, ST.

I’d love to see if LWJ could return kicks. He has speed. Just has to have field vision .

Will the team practice in the rain? Cooke/Ching field has a surface that would hold up.

No practice for me today. Getting some plastic for da windows.

Malcolm Lane: Go graduate, guy! Worth more later in life than football. And I agree that we have lots of guys to stand in this year.

    Esme & whoosh….

Speaking of horses ~ LWJ can buck-a-loose like one stallion. If he can burst thru the seam da o-line creates for him, he’s gone! Problem has been his hesitation to shoot da gap, and then he’s trapped in the backfield for a loss sometimes.

UH Commit is listed as the #17 rated recruit in Orange County.

    17. Dominic Sierra (6-1, 206), La Habra, S – Sierra, shown right, is a newcomer to the list. He was one of the county’s fast-rising recruits in the summer, committing to Hawaii. Sierra was recruited to play strong safety.

  51. A-House August 10, 2009 10:16 am

To answer ST’s question on “hurricane coverage” – your hurricane policy will respond only to damages caused by a “declared” hurricane by the National Weather Service in Hawaii.

Your Homeowners policy will cover all building/contents damages from a “tropical storm” even if the wind speed exceeds 74 mph.

Se safe everyone – water is just as bad as wind!!

  52. Garret August 10, 2009 10:17 am

I agree that LWJ should get a shot at the kick returner position. Maybe they should wait a little while to see how much playing time he’ll get at RB, but he should at least practice a little there.

I would assume that Brashton and Estes were set as captains. If UH is going to have 4 captains, I’d add Greg Alexander and Rocky.

I would *much* rather UH save the money and leave their band home from road trips. That is an expense that just cannot be afforded right now. If UH solicits donors to sponsor the band, that would just reduce the available donations that those sponsors could give to UH. Given current economic conditions and UH’s budget situation, I don’t think we’ll see the band on road trips.

  53. Garret August 10, 2009 10:19 am

I hope that everyone makes it through the storm okay…Mac will probably need to have another 2-a-day practice to make up for the practice that could be lost on Tuesday.

June Jones was the best coach Hawaii ever had and probably ever will. We all know after Coach Mac is gone that Coach Miano is next in line to take over the team. As much respect as I have for Coach Miano i think we will take steps backwards and i would like to see Niumatalolo come back and bring the spread. Get the killer defense and use that spread…..best chance we got to winning because Coach Jones aint coming back. Can you blame him???

Big East coaches want the conference to expand. This could set off a domino effect for other conferences. The Big East teams are having trouble scheduling nonconference games, especially because conferences with big TV deals are offering $1 million to teams outside the BCS for nonconference home games.

The current eight-team configuration has been nothing but trouble, especially scheduling-wise, and for the moment, the only thing the league’s coaches can do is complain about it.

    And complain they did.

This season, UConn is flying to Waco, Texas, to play Baylor; to Athens, Ohio to play Ohio University; and to South Bend, Ind., to play Notre Dame. With teams such as Army, Navy, Maryland, Penn State and Boston College just a few hours away from the Huskies by bus, it boggles the mind that these teams can’t get together to not only schedule each other, but to save money in the process.

“Do you know how much it costs to take a charter to Texas?” Stewart said. “We have to amend the scheduling. I’m going to be very politically correct here “¦ guys, we need nine playing members (in the Big East) so we can be four and four (home and away games). Four and three is a gut check. When you’ve got just three home games in your league, you’re scrambling (to schedule). You can go to a lesser league, hell, but that costs money to get a team to come in.

“If you want to do a story on college football that will absolutely jump out at people, do one on what schools are paying these so-called “¦ I don’t like the word ‘mid-major’ … these other I-A teams. You need a million-dollar gate to play them. Do you know how tough that is? … What would be great for us is to add a ninth team and go four and four. It’s all economics, we need that ninth team.”

    Re tropical storm/hurricane insurance.
As a homeowner (not an insurance professional), I discovered that one should also have flood insurance. There is a fine line between wind damage and water damage. I was blessed with SF insurance during Iniki. This year I added Federal Flood Insurance – juuuuust in case.

NFL players and other professional athletes have an extremely high divorce rate.

What forced Dearth to step outside his relative anonymity as a long snapper, and drove him to host study groups and dispense marriage advice to teammates, are sobering statistics that suggest 12 to 16 of the married Jets will divorce.

The catalyst for his involvement came at a conference hosted by Professional Athletes Outreach, when a speaker told the audience that two years after retirement, 78 percent of N.F.L. players are bankrupt, jobless or divorced.

Polls, studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that the divorce rate for N.F.L. players is between 60 and 80 percent, which is higher than that of the general population, where nearly half of marriages end in divorce, but comparable to athletes in other sports.

    Hello there!

Hope everyone on the islands makes it out of the upcoming storm ok.

Would love to see what LWJ can do on kickoffs. Any news on who may be returning punts this year?

Hey LizKauai! I went on my honeymoon on Kauai this past July. My wife and I had a great time while we were there. We got to go to hanalei bay, and also this tour that took us to the fern grotto and the canyon! Wouldn’t mind going back. It’s so calm and relaxing compared to Oahu where I’m originally from.

  62. Kaimuki Kid August 10, 2009 10:47 am

How about a alumni/expats band for road games, there should a number of ex- band members and for that matter musicians that are originally from Hawaii and can still play instruments get together to rally the team. Game music isn’t that hard to play and could probably be put together with one or two rehearsals, don’t have to be prefect….

  63. jm2375 August 10, 2009 10:47 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Happy birthday SailorBlue!

Back at work, going thru my in-box, but fading fast (it’s 11pm in Europe).

Garret – #58 – if they add another team(s), will that team also participate in other sports too? The Big East in basketball is waay too big already (16 teams? more?).

OK, off to a meeting. esme and out.

  64. al August 10, 2009 10:48 am

those that i would try at kick/punt returners and in no particular order…

walker, wadsworth, chizzy, henry, blount, paclebar, pollard, and unfortunately christian is out, he would have been a top candidate.

i took taylor off because his overall value to the team just went up.

i think that chizzy or blount will emerge as punt returners with paclebar a dark horse. if the coaches have guts i’d give walker and wadsworth a long look at kick returners. henry has had some success returning kicks as well.

  65. wafan August 10, 2009 10:49 am

    her reply, “yah right!”

  67. warriorfanny2 August 10, 2009 10:50 am

Rodney Bradley would be a logical choice to tryout at kick returner. He has quick speed and accelerates in the open field much like Malcolm Lane. More and more today we see the top teams utilizing their perimeter speed to return kicks and who can forget the OSU game at Aloha in 2006 when a certain Beaver WR broke our backs with KO return to the house.
LWJ doesnot run with the same speed he once did while dominating 100-200 meter sprints as a prepster in the NW….Rodney is current-realtime and can rip through seams–we saw it in the spring and at the very least….he deserves a look .

  68. LizKauai August 10, 2009 10:51 am

    $5000 fines
    – High/Low whites on socks
    – Pants not covering knees (no skin should show below the waist)
    – Bandana
    – Wrong nasal strip
    – Hand towel alterations – towel must be 7 to 8 inches and have no tape on it
    – Tape not the same color of the shoe.
    – Jersey untucked (usually there is a warning for this one)
    – Jersey cut too short
    – Sleeves coming out of jersey – only QB can have this and only a certain amount can come out
    – Chinstrap undone ($7500)”

    Happy Birthday Sailor Blue!!!!!

  71. Ethan Rom August 10, 2009 11:02 am

I think Bradley would be a good KR but would like to see LWJ take the bulk of it. This years WR corps looks dangerous with the speed and not to mention height that we haven’t had in most recent years.

I think Chizzy will emerge as the top PR. I dunno, something about his name makes him sound like a jitterbug type player like Mike Brewster.

    What about Pilares at PR?

  72. al August 10, 2009 11:03 am

i would have considered bradley too, however, like taylor their overall value to the team may be too great with lane out for the year. all of a sudden our great depth at wideout got seriously thin unless billy ray and pollard step up to challenge for a starting role at wr.

  73. al August 10, 2009 11:05 am

lwj may not have the field vision to be a successful kick/punt returner.

pilares is also too valuable at slotback.

  74. warriorfanny2 August 10, 2009 11:11 am

I agree that KP is one of the top picks at PR…he is quick, mature, good-hands and can scoot through a crowd.
Being a starter should not preclude participation in STs as a returner. Put your best on the field, that includes ST play which comprises one-third of the college game. ST returns can manufacture scoring or great field position but you must play the best on the field…

interesting to note that another school is having watermelon day for their fb team. after practice, the boosters and friends will be serving watermelon to players and coaches. this will give the boosters and fans a chance to meet the coaches and players. i am assuming that this meets the ncaa rules, but if it was done at UH, our compliance guy would be so slow to get an answer that the watermelons be rotten before it could be served.

Wondering about how much of a contributor Miah Ostrowski might be this season? Seems like he had good vision while playing for O College both on the field and court. Good at changing directions. Recall that he was good at breaking tackles, too.
Sounds like some of the prerequisites for PR.

  79. al August 10, 2009 11:28 am

pilares was given a shot at pr earlier in his career. he appeared a bit too tentative. a kick/punt returner must have that controlled reckless abandom attitude, i.e. chad owens (oops there i go again).

    Stephen:

Would it be possible for the Honolulu Advertiser to post a football lexicon of the abbreviations so many folks use on this blog.

For example, PR in my line of work means Public Relations. In football, does it mean it mean Pass Return or Punt Return? What does ST mean besides Stephen Tsai? Not everyone who reads this blog has the in-depth knowledge of football that some folks do so please help us out.

Hopefully, the football handouts at the Wahine Clinic will include some of this information, but maybe some of the men who regularly visit this site needs some edificating as well.

There are so many abbrv (sorry…couldn’t help myself 😉 that it becomes a matter of looking at what people are talking about and the context. Above, it referred to “punt returner” and kr was “kick returner”. There’s no way to list every meaning…ie in running “pr” is “personal record”

A bit of Tsai-ko trivia… early in the blog (and under different blogware), comments with “Stephen Tsai” would not get past the blog/language filter.

So, “ST” became the standard for referring to or addressing Stephen. Fewer key strokes too. 🙂

i thought we used “st” cuz too lazy to spell the guy’s whole name.

  93. warriorfanny2 August 10, 2009 12:04 pm

look, if we have a mighty mouse for PR the question is moot….but we dont, so Tormey is auditioning–KP is in the mix until someone breaks loose. The fact that he is a starter is of no moment and while Kealoha didnt distinquish himself in his first year as a PR, he remains on a steep learning slope….Im saying he is among several who will get a look and take reps in practice. I dont see, as yet, a clear choice.

    What about Bess?

He showed glimpses of brilliance in his late 2006 debut as a PR than imploded the following year….some players explode in their debut others develop with time….we shall see, one thing for sure–the best will be tried, notwithstanding their starting role.

WDoc ~ At every T-gate you do more talking then listening. Listen and learn. Much info out there to pick up on.

On the blog, tune into the subject matter and content. It may require cross referencing the player positions such as receivers/punt returners.

Then you can determine that the subject must be about players who could be (pr) punt returners on the (st) special teams for example.

It’s not as complicated as what Jason is teaching right now, but you have a few degrees from higher institutions of learning, you can figure it out.

  96. Garret August 10, 2009 12:15 pm

I remember having a lot of posts rejected by the blog filter just because I used ST’s first name. Some times I’d type up an excerpt from an article and lose everything because I forgot and used his name. After wasting all that time several times, I just got in the habit of not using ST’s name.

  97. Garret August 10, 2009 12:20 pm

I really feel badly for Amanda every time people complain about how slow UH’s compliance office is. On UH’s website, it appears that she is the only person in the compliance department. Schools like Alabama have *8* people in their compliance department and Wyoming has 3…with the NCAA adding more and more rules each year (now including social media sites like Twitter and Facebook), she really has to make do with less resources than her peers at other Universities.

Given current budget conditions, UH won’t be able to add another person for the compliance department. But when 1 person at UH does the job that it can take 3 people at a low-budget MWC school or 8 people at a BCS conference school, we shouldn’t be surprised if things go a little slowly. In Amanda’s case, I do *not* think that it is laziness or a question of competence…it is just a lack of resources.

Good day all you Tsai-kos and Tsai-kettes.

Thanks for the b-day wishes…can’t believe it’s here again.

Yesterday there was a discussion of Pride going bolohead if we reach the $2,000 goal during his participation next weekends in Relay-for-Life. Let’s see if we can make this happen…

Was sorry to hear about the Las Vegas CC being canceled. Why don’t all you Tsai-kos that were going to Hooters in Las Vegas give those dollars to Pride’s “Save the Tatas’ (also known as Relay for Life) event this weekend.

Check out Pride RFL website http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY09PL?px=12593159&pg=personal&fr_id=16901 for details.

Breast Cancer is a cause close to both Pride and my hearts. Pride lost his mother back in 2005 and Mrs. SailorBlue was a lucky one and has been clear for 7 years now.

If you are unable to donate, how about coming out on the 15th and lending moral support.

We are getting closer to seeing Pride bolohead and I certainly thank all of you who have already given. Every $$$ will be well spent saving other lives…

Colt’s Corner – Assessing the Scrimmage

    http://www.warpathconfidential.com/?p=425#more-425

“In Saturday’s scrimmage, Colt Brennan had the opportunity to take the Redskins’ number two offense against the team’s number one defense. Unfortunately for Brennan, he and the offense were unable to do much against the starting defense. Brennan finished with respectable quarterback numbers, going 4/6 for 33 yards and a fumble unofficially.

Brennan was in for two series. His first play in the scrimmage would be his best. On the play, Brennan hit receiver Marko Mitchell on a hot read slant for 15 yards. Brennan would hit Mitchell twice more in the scrimmage and add another to tight end Robert Angnone.

Following the scrimmage, Brennan discussed his performance, the completions to Mitchell, and what it was like playing against the first team defense.”

Click the link for the assessment.

High school basketball player is apparently going to skip his senior year of high school to play pro basketball in Israel. This process is getting earlier and earlier…at least this player is 18 years old, but skipping a year of high school is setting a precedent that other high school players might follow.

Jeremy Tyler, the 6-foot-11 high school senior out of San Diego High, will likely sign a contract next week with Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli Premier League

Tyler, who turned 18 two months ago, will become the youngest foreign player to play in the Israeli league. He initially committed to Louisville but then announced his plan to spend two years abroad before entering the 2011 NBA Draft.

He is the latest American, and first high school player, to leave to play professionally overseas.

Looking at the point spreads of a few of the WAC games in the first week of the season

    9/5 Nevada @ Notre Dame

The line (IIRC) on this game started at Nevada+17
    Today it’s Nevada+13

For the spread to drop 4 points means that a lot more bettors are betting on Nevada

With 18 starters returning for Notre Dame, plus Notre Dame having the home field advantage and only spotting Nevada 13 may be indicative of how strong of a team Nevada has.

    9/5 San Jose @ USC

The line on this game started at San Jose+32
    today it’s San Jose+35

In a 2006 game I remember Fresno leading USC at the half 17-14 before running out of steam and losing by (IIRC) three touchdowns. In another game (2007?) I saw lowly Idaho St. from the WAC giving the USC team a good game before losing 35-17. San Jose definitely will have it’s hands full, but I’ll be rooting for them, anyway. Anytime a WAC team does well a against the giant, aka cheater, it makes the WAC look good.

    9/5 LaTech @ Auburn

The line on this game started at LaTech+13
    today it’s LaTech+13.5

For LaTech only being a 13.5 underdog to the big time SEC school may be telling also of how strong another WAC team is, especially when you note that Auburn has the homefield advantage.

    9/3 Oregon @ Boise

    Boise’s a 5.5 point favorite over Oregon

Hope Boise beats them substantially. Makes the WAC look good.

    9/3 Utah State @ Utah

Cross town rivals clash, WAC vs. MWC

Utah State is a 21.5 point underdog

Another WAC game, where I’m hoping Utah State has a respectable showing

    9/4 Central Arkansas @ Hawaii

Since there will probably be no spread on this game I say UH by 24.. 38-14

  110. warriorfanny2 August 10, 2009 12:59 pm

lgw, lol, funny stuff…yet, if our PR did fall fwd, he would gain more yards PPR than we averaged last year….but the problem runs deeper and Im sure once Tormey, our first bonafide ST coach in nearly two-decades, breaks down game film, he will see our roll-back-blockers were outhustled by our opponents PR-D on the runback….c’mon, I would like to see double blocks on the gunner–realtime blockers!

betting on UH without accurate reports on the OL conditioning is blind. Weather withstanding I sure would like to see Gordie and Tormey in action. Central Arkansas is no push over with two highly touted DLM and a QB with BCS experience.
Unless Hawaii can hit HRs on O or STs it will be a long night for warrior fans and enrichmentville for those going against the spread.

i am actually very excited about our prospects of having some real effort put into special teams this year. it has been long overdue as wf2 has mentioned.

we seem to have an abundance of ideal candidates for kick coverage, what with all those studly linebackers and db’s with speed.

putting some concerted planning and effort in to this third phase of the game will parlay our field position in to a more advantageous situation.

Some may not think that this post is not related to the Tsaikos 5 or 6 F’s, but the HA ran an editorial this morning about tapping the Hurricane Fund to ease the State budget woes.

This item rears its head everytime our esteemed Legislators face a budget crisis and it appears this will continue to be the case.

The article did a good job of outlining the “historical” record or the birth of the fund and how it evloved over the years until it was terminated and continued to earn interest. It was the first article to mention that the basis of the fund was $$$ we paid as premiums for Hurricane coverage after many of us were left without coverage (post Iniki). Many did NOT pay into this fund as their insurance companies continued to provide them with coverage.

Why tap the fund now? To ease the overall budget probems of the State in conjunction with the ongoing furlough of State of Hawaii employees and subsquent labor dispute as some Legislators have suggested?

If the fund is tapped for this reason, what about the hundreds or maybe thousands of others who are already unemployed because of the current economic conditons in our State, Country, and international market conditions? Is it fair to tap the fund so State employees do not have to give up furlough days or reduce the days from 3 to whatever or they do not take a pay cut?

It is not an easy problem. I would prefer that the State REFUND the money to all those who contributed to it. Go ask the insurance companies for their records and you will find the name of each client who paid into the Hurricane Fund from beginning to end. They are the owners of the millions sitting in the Fund.

When the Legislature created the Hawaii Hurricane Fund, and they will heartly disagree with this position, the Fund became a “mutual insurance company” (like State Farm Insurance Company) meaning that all clients are owners of the company.

However, I do not forsee the members of our esteemed Legislature having the moral courage to reach this conclusion as this has become a favoriate “baby” to play with whenever they need $$$. They are already using all interest earned to support their favoriate causes.

Has anyone seen a plan on how the Legislature will use the fund $$$ in case of a devstating Hurricane hitting one or more Islands? I haven’t and do not recall anyone mentioning a plan on use of the funds. It would be a sad day if $$$ are given to an individual or business who did not pay a single penny into the Fund.

Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip at last, Hip Hip hooray, this donkeys ass is done!

Mrs A-House and I watched the 1998 UH vs BYU game on Saturday night and we both enjoyed watching the defensive and special teams play (thanks, oldie; we are looking forward to meeting you some day).

We did not have GREAT players, but he had players with HEART and willing to play clean and hard; forever, huslting down field on punts and kickoff; crunching Detmer for sacks; defensive player always rusing to the ball; and a O-line that kept Gabriel mostly out of harms way.

Both of us agreed that it has been a long time that we have seen a UH team with this kine of heart and hustle. Mrs A-House suggested that Coach Tormey review the game and show this to the 2009 defensive unit and all members of the special teams.

With our microscopic lens trained on each phase of practice, we have to remember certain things:

    1. They already have coaches for every position. (Dey don’t need us).

    2. They teach and train the boys to game standards. (Mmmmm yep!)

    3. They were selected because they are good at what they do. (Yes!)

    4. We have to place our trust in them. (They make the hard choices).

    5. They all understand that this is not P.E. (Gym class W-Doc).

Who are we to 2nd guess what they are teaching and training the boys to do? Telling them that they should do this and do that. Or move so and so into doing something other than what they brought him in for…that’s out of our hands! When you are hired on for your expertise, then you can suggest something. well, when your STs are consistently ranked in the bottom 10 of D1A football and your OL leads the nation in sacks and you are paying $1.1 m a year to pay Hawaii’s football HC for excellence, every tax payer has a right to question as well as a season ticket holder or ppv fan.
I dont buy into the presumption that coaches are infallable any more than the Pope, the President, Dan Inouye, Linda Lingle, Mufi Hanneman, Jim Donovan or MAC.

  138. Maynard G. Krebs August 10, 2009 2:38 pm

The (State) hurricane fund was set up in 1993 to provide hurricane coverage when the private carriers decided to leave the islands after Iniki.

The insurance companies began to realize that we were not Florida and subject to hurricanes on a yearly basis and came back in the Hawaii market about seven years later. The law establishing the fund said that once the fund was terminated, the moneys had to go back into the general fund.

The State’s project is by law required to be balanced. The legislature doesn’t want to raise taxes to balance the budget nor does it want to RIF people or chop programs or have furloughs and so they pass the buck, so to speak, to the governor. Under our system of government, the governor cannot raise moneys and so has to do other things to balance up the budget. The unions will raise hell if she RIFs or furloughs workers.

So the easy way out is to grab the moneys in the hurricane fund.

Of course if a hurricane should strike, and the insurance companies once more abandons us, we would need a fund IN PLACE because there is a mandatory requirement by the banks and lending institutions for wind and hurricane insurance otherwise without the insurance policies the financial institutions would have to foreclose on the properties! So terminating the fund would be irresponsible – but since when does the lawmakers require responsibility?

sorry for the above long-winded message

  147. Kekoa August 10, 2009 3:02 pm

wf2 ~ Are you speaking to me in #131? I have to assume you are.

Your favorite word is sugar coat. I’ve noted your use of it before. Other descriptors used are blind fanand provincial. That’s your opinion. That’s what you see. Then so what if I am! I won’t disagree.

Truth is, I do trust in the people who were chosen to run the program, and I like to watch and stay out of there way. Support from me is not going to make or break the program.

What I enjoy doing is taking it all in. College football, great stuff! I don’t get all tripped up with X’s and O’s, I let the armchair opinionators do all that. I just sit back and enjoy the ride! We’re all we’ve got! Small time stuff compared to the rest of the Nation…but it’s OURS! Funny, we’ve made quite an impression on some of the BCS and non-conference teams lately.

You seem intent on focusing on the money coach Mack is paid. Compared to other coaches around the country, it’s chicken feed! I happen to find the man a very likeable person who happens to be a pretty damn good HC. I happen to think he’s still a work in progress, and he has made progress! It ain’t over yet, the best is yet to come.

I choose to get behind the Warriors because they are not professionals. They are someone’s son trying like hell to get an education and in some cases fighting to make the team.

I could care f@#!$ less if they were ranked in the bottom 10 or 100 of D1A football or if the OL leads the nation in sacks. I know they will do better this year because maybe my blind faith, or my provincially proud Polynesian ways make me wish that they will. I know one thing, they will silence the critics like you.

I know you enjoy taking potshots at the Tsaiko faithful from your catbird seat. So fire away! It’s your dime.

  148. whitey August 10, 2009 3:04 pm

    NICE VIDEO, Princess Leila!

  150. Pride. August 10, 2009 3:08 pm

Kekoa, you’re so provincial. Perhaps you need to get out into the world and experience new things, people, and cultures. September will be a good chance for you to do that. Go to Las Vegas, once you’ve seen that place, you’ve pretty much seen it all.

  151. Da Punchbowl Kid August 10, 2009 3:11 pm

    Kekoa-

Just for giggles, would you care to share the number of languages you speak or the number of countries you have lived or served in? Perhaps that will dissuade some posters from over using the term “provincial”.

The better metaphor might be to say that most posters here are from “Warrior Country” and as such, our posts may reflect a certain level of support and appreciation for the Warriors. Is that so odd on blog devoted to the Warriors?

  152. SailorBlue August 10, 2009 3:15 pm

Seems I have heard this broken record of an argument before…

At this point in the season (less that a week of practices complete), we should be in the optimistic phase. Let’s wait to to we at least start playing games to get so negative and start our finger point and arm chair quarterbacking…

Just my $0.019999999 worth (or $0.02 cents to all the non-math folks)…

  153. Kekoa August 10, 2009 3:16 pm

Pride ~ Come to my ‘Provincial’ Condo in Vegas for the post game BBQ on Sunday. I may be grilling Crow!

  154. Da Punchbowl Kid August 10, 2009 3:18 pm

Oh, and friend Kekoa, do include the number of distant domains in which you actually own property. That number number would hardly reflect ownership by one who might be considered “provincial”.

Forsooth, if you do not wish to share such information from either this or my previous post on the matter, that would be perfectly understandable, for such behavior might be deemed truly immodest and certainly more “provincial”.

  155. Kekoa August 10, 2009 3:19 pm

    Team Captains-

    Alexander

    Fonoti

I’d like having only two team captains as I feel that having two solidifies the overall leadership on the team. Whereas I think having four team captains dilutes the leadership and therefore not as effective.

Welcome home JM2375! I answered your post about the subtle differences of Iberian influence and put it in your email box.

I try not to post too much about it on the blog because then Pride gets upset. He feels slighted because he has a hard time finding some of these places on the map. He doesn’t get out past Nanakuli much anymore. I’ll take him to Ford Island one day, I know he’s never been there.

Sounds like the keed had a blast! Funny how they grumble about stuff, and then when they see that it comes with boys that suddenly are paying attention to them…hmmm.

  205. royal crown August 10, 2009 4:59 pm

    cont. #196

The reason I like Alexander is because I think of all the players he has proven himself by leading in the off season workouts. As opposed to any other player I think he is the one player that players around him can look up to. Remembering from last year Alexander shows a lot of toughness to endure the hits he took. As a fellow player you love seeing this type of quality in a leader. For in one play he could take a mean hit and then in the next not be afraid to tuck the ball and run. I also believe by selecting Alexander as captain it would be the spark and inspiration that could lead him into performing better on the field.

The reason I pick Fonoti is that I think Fonoti would put his heart and soul into leading the team with the same passion as he shows in sacking a quarterback. I also think others would look up to him. And I think he would lead and urge others by the way he carries himself on the field.

  206. al August 10, 2009 5:09 pm

rob25…i know some who will be taking a voluntary furlough that day.

  207. al August 10, 2009 5:12 pm

d1….i know its hard to believe but, adobo is a spanish seasoning. all hispanic cooking include a variation of adobo and of course the filipino adobo.

btw, the boss claims that the adobo at the philmart in kihei is the best she has ever eaten. i think there secret is to use the belly pork only and some dufran.

  208. al August 10, 2009 5:14 pm

personally, i think although he is a quiet leader, estes deserves to be a captain for his four years here as well as the fact that he too stepped it up this spring and summer.

there also should be a st captain. hopefully a semeri ulufale clone will emerge.

  209. al August 10, 2009 5:15 pm

lizk….in the past three years, i don’t remember when we didn’t have a tailgate.

  210. Ralph August 10, 2009 5:22 pm

what’s in an adobo sauce? and what is dufran?

  211. Derek August 10, 2009 5:25 pm

Not Wright-Jackson for kick returner. The best returners are receivers or DBs. I.E. Owens, Bess, Branch, Khan-Smith, Sydner, Newberry, etc.
They gotta have good hands, shiftyness, and quickness. Speed helps a lot too. My nominations. Henry, Blount, Taylor. You cannot underestimate the importance of the kickoff and punt retuner. It can make or break the game on one play. These are very important positions.

  212. Slugger August 10, 2009 5:26 pm

Happy birthday, Sailor Blue!!! Hope you’re having a wonderful day!

    Tsaikettes,

Sephora should have more OPI “Dark Room” Warrior green nail polish in on Wednesday. New color & just in time for football season. Very close to the dark evergreen in the UH football color scheme.

  213. warriorfanny2 August 10, 2009 5:54 pm

kekoa, lets talk substantive football. That’s what I like.
Tell me Y u r so high on our D.
What are JUCO downsides at DBs?
What r your thoughts on ST play.
Any post mortem thoughts on the Destin Stewart fiasco?
What was the ‘coup de grace’ that tripped-up Stewart’s LOI?
What lesson can we learn going forward?

  214. Kazz August 10, 2009 5:55 pm

Nice of UA to continue to fulfill their obligations to UH football with new practice jerseys after one season.

Did the previous outfitter do this considering the kind of money that other outfitter makes on an annual basis? I think not… Considering the way a lot of those uniforms looked like in 2007. 🙄

  215. letsgowarriors August 10, 2009 5:58 pm

isleboy is reporting on WSN that the OL today was estes, hansen, thomas, letuli, kia. that is a huge OL.

    where are the practice reports?

  216. Kekoa August 10, 2009 6:09 pm

Dereck ~ When you get a chance, come watch practice. You will be amazed by our punter, Alex Dunnachie, as he puts on a dazzling display of high hang time punts. This will cause the opposition to hesitate to gather in a punt when they are surrounded by a host of defenders.

If they call for a fair catch, they best be able to field it cleanly. If they choose to get away from it, our guys can down it deep in their territory.

Meanwhile our guys get excellent practice at fielding some difficult punts. Therein lies a huge teaching point for the ST coach. (Al, in this instance we’re talking Special Teams and not our blog host).

  217. warriorfanny2 August 10, 2009 6:15 pm

The shift of Thomas to OG speaks volumes for Gordie Shaw’s plan to play smash ball…now we need to see the delicate coaching and execution.

Unless there was an update what you’re probably seeing is the “upper” portion of the storm being “sheered off” by winds. That part is usually highlighted in yellow or orange. At the 6pm news the bulk of the storm is still marching on towards Maui county and then Oahu tomorrow.

Wait, 😯 oh… you mean Alex Dunnachie? Oh I can’t say, I can only make the practices on Saturday’s this year and this past Saturday he was “away” from the action on the lower soccer practice field doing his thing. Saw Dunnachie also practicing some placeholding with Lucas “The Second Coming” Ingram.

I did request vacation during the last week of August, but fall camp all pau just before that… 🙁 So pretty much I have three days of vacation to do… well… nothing.

Fo shua!!! If some people cannot make it to practice then no worries, but the fact that the public isn’t like “banned” or anything is just great to know!!! 😎

Wow #213 looks like an olive branch. I’ll have to take a chance that it’s not a trap. I almost decided to do what I usually do and keep my opinons to myself. I may regret this.

    1. I never said I was high on the Defense. But watching how serious they are taking their instruction at camp, I like what I see!

1a. I was just defending the Oline from your comments. Having said that, I will simply state that both lines are a work in progress. The boys look like they have worked hard during the off season, but I know from a 3rd party source who trained with them that they could have done better. So we’ll see how they come out of the tunnel. I do have positive expectations of them.

    2. JUCO downsides?…learning the defensive calls. learning by shadowing our receivers, and figuring out the continuity off the many routes run. Bonding and unifying with this Warrior squad. I like how they compliment each other’s play out there during practice sessions.

    3. ST play?…I see some things that the coaches have implemented that is very much an improvement of the way the ST will flow. I don’t want to go in detail about it because it might give away something the coaches want to keep exclusive. Let’s just say they will be swarming to the ball with speed and quickness.

4 & 5. Destin and his parents are privy to that information. I would never probe into their personal decisions.

    6. First game is a true test of what’s to come. With the chips down, we should prevail. The rest of the WAC schedule is doable. We can pressure Nevada and Ichabod Crane. Fresno at home? Yes! Boise – I gotta believe that we will outscore ’em! Is it possible we run the table? Why not? Navy might have something to say about that tho according to the Sailor man.

Sounds like a good idea … for the Mainland.
Might be awkward here if, say, Boise State hired the Punahou or Iolani band to play.

I think there would be a better chance of USC getting Punahou to play for them… 🙄

In that case it would be awkward, but NOT very surprising… 🙄 … 🙄

  247. FloridaTed August 10, 2009 8:11 pm

Considering the confusion and a certain lack of confidence our team was experiencing last year, directly resulting in at least 3 losses that should have never happend, I must clearly extrapolate a minimum of at least 10 wins this year.

Everything is much better organized, from spring camp to fall, the talent has improved across the board, now we will see how good our coaches really are. For my part I’m allowing myself to get real excited again.

Then again, Football is fought on the field, and the line between winning and losing is often razor thin, but we have the kind of team this year, that could very easy defy all odds, labeled on them by some lazy mainland pundits and go all the way. Off course, we could just as easily lose 3 or 4 games.

But this uncertainty, coupled with a tremendous upside, makes this years team extremely worthwhile watching. I like being the underdog, the Warriors always seem to play better that way.

We have a few players with unfinished business.

Stan Hasiak and another freshman recruit practiced with UCLA’s first team OL today.

Both Hasiak (6 feet 5, 318 pounds) and Su’a-Filo (6-4, 310) said they were eager to learn, but hardly expected to replace returners.

“I try to stay humble and keep a low profile,” Su’a-Filo said. “The veterans are really good to me and have taken me under their wing. If I can help the team get better that will be great.”

Still, as Hasiak said, “I knew I would have an opportunity to come in here and get a chance to play early, competing with the older guys.”

Hasiak said he would play this season and then intended to go on a two-year Mormon mission next year.

“I really don’t talk about it much because I want the focus to be on this season,” Hasiak said. “I’m working on my paperwork now and when I turn that in, I’ll find out where I will go.”

The LA Times has Nevada as the #24 team in the country.

The Wolf Pack have gone to bowls four consecutive years but have been hiding in the standings weeds behind Boise State — like everyone else in the Western Athletic Conference.

It may be time for Nevada to pull up a championship chair.

The team’s “Pistol” offense is led by Kaepernick, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound junior who put up Tim Tebow-like numbers last year.

Kaepernick led a prolific offense that averaged 37.6 points a game while becoming only the fifth quarterback in major college history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 in the same season.

The problem, as usual, is the defense. The Wolf Pack last year allowed almost as many points per game (32.3) as the offense averaged. The defense was 91st out of 119 last year, so any serious run at a BCS bowl will require tightening a few bolts.

BG, as I mentioned to you at practice when we overheard the pep-talk Meatoga was giving his fellow dlinemen, that Meatoga was showing signs of being a great leader for our Warriors.

With that being said, Meatoga had my full attention and I was watching him closely to see what he’d do to lead by example to set the tone for the drill for the defense. ‘m pretty sure he started out against John Estes.

BTW, #56 on the oline is Matagasila Lefiti. Kahai is #65. Both may look the same in the sense that they are not as tall as their linemates and they’re both centers. I believe Sila Lefiti is “2nd” behind J. Estes on the depth chart at this time though.
