McMackin, Salas are today's guests; Alex Green arrives

Head coach Greg McMackin and slotback Greg Salas are today’s guests on the Warrior Beat Show, which begins at noon. You’re invited to pose questions on this blog’s comments section or on the show’s Cover It Live area. Please join us.

After some glitches, heralded running back Alex Green is on the rock. He worked out at UH yesterday, then took a couple of minutes to talk story with the Warrior Beat.
Running late.
“I had to go through so much to get here. I was supposed to be here July 2. But so many things green11happened. My teacher actually went out of town. She couldn’t post my grades. I got the grades on Friday, and I was here on Sunday, As soon as possible I was here, ready to work. I’m ready for two-a-days.”
Life’s different now.
“I came from a (junior college) where we ran the ball probably 20, 25 times a game. Here, there are limited carries, but it’s going to be exciting. In JUCO, there were eight (defenders) in the box. Here there will be one or two. If you get the ball, it could be showtime.”
Why Hawai‘i?
“Good coaches, good program. Not just because it’s Hawai‘i. The program is on the uprise. It’s just a good place to be for the next two years.”
In his free time …
“I love to play video games. I play NCAA 2010. I play with Hawai‘i, of course. Before that, I played with Oregon State. That’s where I signed out of high school. Now it’s only Hawai‘i.”
Say, aren’t you …?
“As soon as I got off the plane, people asked, ‘Can I have your autograph?’ I’m like, ‘Do you know who I am?’ They’re like, ‘You’re Davone Bess.’ I tell them, ‘No, I’m not Davone Bess.'”
Bess also signed with Oregon State as a high schoo senior.
“I didn’t know that. We’ve got something in common.”
Favorite food?
“Steak and shrimp, baby. All day, steak and shrimp. I once ate two bowls of jumbo shrimp.”

(We promise to behave in class!)

  12. Kekoa August 4, 2009 7:16 am

    2 Questions for Mr. Salas:

    1. Do you feel like you have another ‘scat’ gear you can open up when the DB is in hot pursuit?

    2. When you were a kid. Did you aspire to play for UH, and who was your hero?

  13. Slugger August 4, 2009 7:16 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka kakou!

Alex does look a little like Davone from the side when you see the dreds. Same build. They’re both cute guys.

    Slugger-
I’ve finally gotten the bubble wrap in so that the Warrior Jack balls for Florida Ted and Rich2174 can begin their journey to the continent. They’ve been sitting in their envelopes for a while now. Hold on Ted, and Rich, WARRIOR JACK is coming!

    Welcome aboard, Mr. Green!

  22. Bulla August 4, 2009 7:42 am

    dpk,

how goes it bro, long time no see, ‘the beast’ returns to WSU tonight, time to get ready for battle.

great news for the Marciel family, Kela Marciel was going to be a gray shirt originally, but ‘got the call’ yesterday. he is on the roster, he has to report to camp, and will be balling this semester. so he is on the same flight as Ryan tonight 🙂

interesting story of 3 kailua kids playing pop warner football 10 years ago, are now team mates at Weber State University…..Mike Hoke (kamehameha) Ryan Eastman (st louis), and Kela Marciel (iolani)…..and that are what memories are made of. these guyz are soooooo lucky…..

mahalo for all the prayers and support for the Wildcats, and for those of you who want the latest breaking news about the Warriors and The Beast, email me 🙂

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid August 4, 2009 7:43 am

Just want to say to Coach Mack that I’m proud that he’s our Coach. What are his goals this year, and who are the RBs on the 105 man roster? We appear loaded at that position.

And to Greg Salas, I think you’ll be devastating as a slot. I can’t wait to see you play this year.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid August 4, 2009 7:46 am

    bulla-

Kailua Pop Warner- the cradle of greatness! 😉 Did the beast add some bulk with Daddy’s cooking?

thank you for coming aboard today. your appearance today definitely shows your great character.

with just two days from the opening of fall camp, are you ready to lead your team from this obvious set back in to the valley and “fear no evil”?

and btw, thanks for replying to my email.

    whew!
we are so glad that you finally made it through the red tape and all.
from your mini-interview, i see where you are comfortable with the press and very candid with your replies, i hope to see you as a future chat host soon.

welcome aboard….and btw we make a few “mean” shrimp dishes, if you ever get lost and stumble upon our place, we could make “bubba gump” look bad.

do you feel that the 09 recruit class will address the glaring “pukas” we had going in to this season?

who are the ones that will contribute right away?

you brought in two jc running backs is that an indication that there will be much modifications to our offensive scheme this year from previous years?

  37. chawan_cut August 4, 2009 8:18 am

heun looks like a LB. just gotta smile less.

    can’t wait. 32 days.

    Q for the T&W show….
    Coach Mack,
what will the focus be for Fall camp? will a lot of time be placed on special teams since not much was done during the spring? also because we have a new punter and kicker?
    thank you!

  38. al August 4, 2009 8:19 am

    greg salas

your move to slotback was something some of us never saw coming, but, it does make a lot of sense and you seem to have found a lot of comfort in playing the position.

however, if you had your druthers where would you like to play and why?

  39. 808Chef August 4, 2009 8:20 am

    Coach Mack…

How’s Ms. Mack’s cooking skills and what kind of grinds satisfies the Coach?

  40. 808Chef August 4, 2009 8:24 am

    For Salas…

Now that Craig’s gone and we move on, is the receiving corps looking forward to what’s in store NEXT?

  44. Chicken Grease August 4, 2009 8:44 am

Guess I’ll post a Q. ima wa, then.

I’m sorry if this seems to be a long question; you’ll get the point enough to answer, though: If the University is reprimanding you as a member of this University (and not as Greg McMackin, the private citizen), in what way do you think the UH Athletic Communications Dept. or Office of Information, or what have you, AND Hinshaw and Donovan could and should have lent a hand in helping you craft the apology from last Friday?

Not that your apology was bad, but, it really seemed like the University didn’t help you in this manner. You came through for them in facing this situation as they expected you as a notable member of the UH Community; there didn’t seem to be a balance offered on their side. They, too, could’ve done more in helping represent you as well in this case, quite ironically.

Coach, God Bless you – you know, where you stood, Public Enemy also held a press conference w/regard to their upcoming Honolulu concerts many years ago, so, let me say, to borrow from one of their songs, it takes a nation of millions to hold back UH Warrior fans and just about a million planets to make this same Warrior fan base leave Coach McMackin behind. We’re behind you Coach, so hold fast, sir!!!!!

  45. Stretch August 4, 2009 8:45 am

The game against Navy on Nov 28 will start at 5:30pm to accomodate ESPNU.

that means 30 minutes less pregame time for KK to get drunk. maybe he’ll be able to stay up the entire game.

  46. (Jesse)James August 4, 2009 8:45 am

Good morning Tsaikos….hope all have a good day.

    I too am backin’ McMackin…

    Interesting article Stretch…

Question: Coach Mack..What type of conditioning do you plan to have for the players? I know that all of them should have been conditioning on their own during the break but it seemed last year that some of the players were a little “gassed” during games and practice. Will you have the team running more “gassers”? Sprints? Thanks.

  47. penguin August 4, 2009 8:48 am

  48. d1島 August 4, 2009 8:49 am

  49. A-House August 4, 2009 8:50 am

    Greg Salas:

  50. d1島 August 4, 2009 8:50 am

How will game time adjustments be handled for the receivers this season?

  51. A-House August 4, 2009 8:51 am

    Coach Mack:

I believe that most if not all Warrior fans are pleased with your recruiting philosophy.

At what point in time would you stop recruiting a “targeted” recruit?

  52. d1島 August 4, 2009 8:52 am

What specific improvements are you looking for from the OL play? When will you expect to see those come about?

    COACH McMACKIN

Speaking in generalities…fumbles happen. A player can get down on himself and make everyone around him feel miserable. Or he can choose to move on and concentrate on breaking the next play. What would you say to this player to put him in the proper frame of mind?

    I’m backin’ McMackin!

  69. BG August 4, 2009 10:18 am

    Greg

How do you see moving to the slot as utilizing your abilities better?

  70. G (China) August 4, 2009 10:18 am

Coach Mack let me first say thank you for being a great example. I love the fact that you simply apologized and for that you are to be commended rather than hiding behind recalibration of words. I do think that some of the money that you were fined for going to an intern to raise awareness for gay issues is a major over reach to exact justice simply because if we are going to give money for every slur that is made then the university will be paying out money unendingly for all that take offense. Can you comment on why the university went this route, especially since what you said didn’t seem to be an attack on the gay community and that JD and Virgina Hinshaw seemed to have asked you if you would be willing to do this?

Coach best of luck this season. I’m in China right now, but I’m looking forward to catching the Warriors every chance I can. Love the look of the team and all that you are doing to trying to improve the program!

  71. lava August 4, 2009 10:23 am

    Question for Coach Mack –

I’m sure the WAC media conference will continue to draw questions. Are you prepared to say “I’ve expressed my regret, and we’ve moved on, next question,” which is my hope for your response, or are you going to try and address the questions in more detail and risk tripping up, which I see as fueling more questions.

Don’t fret, we’ve all screwed up, we’ve moved on, said please do the same.

  72. lava August 4, 2009 10:23 am

“So” please do the same. dah? lol

  73. kama krab August 4, 2009 10:35 am

Great to hear about Alex Green & am happy that Jake Heun is now healthy. I thought though that Jake had had a ruptured disc or something of that nature?
Anyway, hope to see Jake on the field. His great attitude & physicality are impressive. Is he on the middle linebacker / DE depth chart??

  80. royal crown August 4, 2009 11:27 am

    Coach Mack,

Looking at this year’s schedule with away games at LaTech, Washington State, UNLV and San Jose State all have starting times of 7:05 p.m, 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. do these times compared to afternoon games work in your team’s favor? To me it seems like your team under performs and plays worse during day games-as witnessed in last year’s games with Notre Dame, Utah State, Oregon State and Florida games.

  81. Garret August 4, 2009 11:36 am

    Coach Mac,

We Warrior fans on the mainland are behind you and the team and wish to show our support at UH road games. Is there anything in particular that you would like for Warrior fans to do at road games (wear a certain color, coordinate a certain cheer, greet the team bus, etc.)?

  82. Garret August 4, 2009 11:37 am

    Greg Salas,

Did Coach Ron Lee or Coach Stutzmann spend the bulk of the time with the receivers last season or did they split the duties fairly evenly?

  83. LizKauai August 4, 2009 11:39 am

    Whoosh!

    COLT WATCH:
    http://blog.redskins.com/2009/08/04/morning-practice-orakpo-gonna-be-a-great-one/#continued

“Orakpo also took issue with my assessment that he had been caught out of position on a Colt Brennan to Fred Davis touchdown pass at the goalline. “What?!? When?” he said. “Nah, that wasn’t happening. I was blitzing the quarterback and he threw it over my head.”

  84. LizKauai August 4, 2009 11:40 am

ST- Davone Bess’ caption is misspelled…

  85. Garret August 4, 2009 11:40 am

    Coach Mac,

Recruiting is becoming earlier and earlier each year. Florida just had a 2010 recruit enroll a year early–he’s enrolling at their school this week and will be at their Fall camp even though he cannot sign a National Letter of Intent until February. Is this something that you would ever plan to do with Warrior recruiting?

  86. Garret August 4, 2009 11:42 am

This is the story I’m referring to:

Wide receiver Stephen Alli, a 2010 Florida Gators commitment from Proctor Academy in Andover, N.H., is expected to enroll at the University of Florida this week to attend fall practices an entire year early.

  87. Garret August 4, 2009 11:43 am

Some questions about a recruit enrolling a year early:

But it also opens up a Pandora’s box of eligibility issues. Presumably, Alli still can’t sign an actual letter of intent to play at Florida until signing day in February, like everyone else in the ’10 class; there is no early signing period. Is he eligible to practice? And if he’s eligible to practice, is he eligible to play in games? If he’s actually enrolled in school, why shouldn’t he be? If not, does this year count against his future eligibility — is it an automatic redshirt year, or will he still have “five to play four” through 2014? What if he decides to leave Florida before actually committing his name to the athletic scholarship on signing day — would the normal transfer rules (i.e. a mandatory year on the bench) apply, or would he be free to sign anywhere else that might offer him and play right away?

Technically, it seems Alli is a walk-on (he may be paying his way with an academic scholarship until he can sign an athletic scholarship in February) and as such will probably be immediately eligible like any freshman walk-on, even he’s destined to redshirt. As this is the next logical frontier in the never-ending advance of the pressure to get younger and younger kids committed and into schools earlier and earlier, though, and Alli’s just at the edge of the next possible trend, it would be best to establish a coherent precedent.

  88. labrat August 4, 2009 11:44 am

    Greg Salas

What do you think you need to improve to become a better player?

  89. Garret August 4, 2009 11:45 am

Ryan Mouton did well at practice today.

We may have an answer to our problems with corner back depth. Rookie Ryan Mouton made a great play on a badly under thrown deep ball from Vince Young that was intended for Nate Washington and picked it off. He had another interception, this time from Alex Mortensen in rookie 7 on 7’s after practice ended.

  90. labrat August 4, 2009 11:46 am

    coach Mack

What I don’t like about the schedule this year is the 3 road games after one home game to start the season. It gives you very little time to come up with a traveling squad. Your thoughts?

  91. LizKauai August 4, 2009 11:46 am

COACH MACK: I am planning to fly over for Heather’s Workshop this month. Can you tell us a little about it? Thanks for responding to my email. We BELIEVE and got your back, Mack! 😎

    Colt tidbit.

the Redskins have renamed one of their pass patterns “Colt.” It used to be called “Corner Omaha,” or something like that. C-O

Can we expect to see a more expanded playbook now that Greg Alexander provides some stability at the QB spot, and Inoke being a potential multi-level threat?

Who do you feel are strong leaders on the team? The guys that keep players in line because the coaches can’t be everywhere, especially on the field in the heat of battle.

    COLT CALL:
    http://www.bgobsession.com/showthread.php?t=2120

    Coach Jim Zorn:

On how he thinks quarterback Colt Brennan has evolved since last year:

“I think Colt has come a long way. I think the way I get on him, he probably doesn’t feel like he’s come a long way, but I’m pushing him and he has come a long way. He’s done well. He’s becoming more disciplined. When he first got here he was a little bit all over the place. Now he’s being more disciplined in the pocket. He’s starting to read the throws. But he’s a work in progress and this preseason is going to be very important for him. I’m not tinkering with his arm yet at all. I’m really trying to get the mental part of his game and really the footwork part of his game. I’m trying to get him to move.”

  99. Garret August 4, 2009 1:10 pm

The Patriots just added a LB who is also a long-snapper. So, they have *three* long-snappers in camp now?

Ninkovich – who had 16 sacks in two seasons at Purdue after setting the Joliet Junior College school single-season record with 16 sacks in 2003 – also could be an option at long snapper. He filled that role in college, did some deep snapping in the preseason as a rookie and said he considers himself an NFL-caliber long snapper. While the Patriots currently have veteran free agent addition Nathan Hodel and rookie draft pick Jake Ingram competing for that job, Ninkovich might be an emergency option.

“It’s always been a talent that I’ve had, because not everyone can do it and do it consistently well,” Ninkovich said. “[The Patriots coaches] did say, ‘Hey, we’re probably going to have you snap a little bit just to see how it looks.’ I was like, ‘OK, whatever you want.’ It’s just the more you can do.”

  100. Garret August 4, 2009 1:11 pm

The NFL is beginning to ban their players from using Twitter…

As training camps opened last week, players were told that the same standard — read: paranoia — that applied to the flow of information to reporters also applied to Twitter. In Green Bay, players were told they would be fined if they texted or tweeted from team meetings or coaching sessions.

When Coach Tony Sparano met with the Miami Dolphins before Sunday’s first practice, he effectively outlawed Twitter, nose tackle Jason Ferguson said.

  101. Garret August 4, 2009 1:13 pm

New England has also apparently banned Twitter, so Jake Ingram isn’t using his Twitter account anymore.

As for the New England Patriots – not surprising that the few Pats with Twitter accounts have gone silent since training camp. Of the four Patriots listed on twitter-athletes.com(Jake Ingram, Randy Moss, Laurence Maroney and Vince Wilfork), none have updated their accounts in 15 days – and Moss only tweeted once – noting that he was now on Twitter.

I mean, is there a message so Twitter-worthy that it’s worth ending up in Bill Belichick’s doghouse? You’ll have to live with the Pats official Twitter accounts, and those from the legion of reporters following Tom Brady’s every breath at training camp.

  102. LizKauai August 4, 2009 1:13 pm

    COLT you know:

    http://www.hogshaven.com/2009/8/4/976999/august-4-our-recap-from-training

“Another sweltering hot day. The practice started for QBs with Zorn throwing the ball on the ground and each Qb having to fall on it in a spooning/sliding fashion. Colt did it the best of the three. Todd Collins seemed to run up to it, squat, and fall on it which drew laughter from the crowd. Campbell also had an awkward fall on it which resulted in a quick lecture from Zorn. ”

    — Drills now switch to Red Zone —

    – Colt has a really nice play-action fake bootleg and throws a pass to Fred Davis in the end-zone. Zorn throws his hands up in the air in celebration.

    – Colt Brennan can’t find an open WR…looks around and runs out of bounds. Gets some coaching from Zorn.

Princess Leila ~ You did a super job of moderating the questions with Coach Mack & G. Salas. The audio quality was much more balanced than in previous shows. Thank you for your effort to improve the quality of the Warrior Beat Show. Princess, you looked Mah-vell-ous!

Oh…and Stephen, you looked and sounded good also (nice shirt, Wena must have dressed you today).

  107. Kekoa August 4, 2009 1:46 pm

labrat ~ I noticed that Coach didn’t come right out and say yes
to my question of allowing us men to attend. He was alluding to it being a ladies night, and so the focus would be for the ladies. I understand that part.

I think it’s worth the $10 price of admission to be able to sit in the rafters while the ladies receive their instruction. I wanted to be there for the support of the McMakin’s clinic. The more of us that show, the better.

    I’m Backin’ McMackin!

  108. royal crown August 4, 2009 1:49 pm

What the WB show did for Coach Mack is that it allowed him to regain some of his dignity and pride that he lost. And you can see as the show was progressing he was becoming more and more comfortable and happier. This was really noticeable.

On the eve of fall camp and the beginning of a new season, and in the wake of his indiscretion, this show was the perfect antidote for allowing him to make peace. And to integrate back into the good graces of the public.

After the show I would bet the Coach walked away happier. And he would surely concede that this show allowed him to start the coming season on a good note.

My best wishes and Aloha to the coaches and players in the upcoming season.

labrat- imho- the Heather event is something that encourages women / fans/ football widows/ neophytes to come out to a “safe” environment to learn the basics about college football.
I know jack about the plays and not much about all the positions and right now gigi knows more about football than I do because she went to last year’s event and has the paperwork to remind her.
It’s on my calendar for this year.

    Hey Garret – re#87

I am assuming the Alli kid graduated early? As long as he has graduated he’s eligible to play and receive a scholarship. He doesnt need to sign a Letter of Intent, just a scholarship agreement. Just like Billy Ray, he signed a scholarship agreement because he was enrolled early. Also, he cant leave Florida and go play elsewhere without sitting out a year, whether he plays or not. As long as he is enrolled at Florida he cant sign with anyone else, he’d have to get a release. I’d just say congrats to him for having the academics and all his required classes to graduate early and start college early. I think we were all proud of Billy Ray when he did it as Im sure all Warrior fans are.

To Alex Green: Great steak and shrimp at Foodland Supermarket on Wednesdays. Only 6.50 too. I believe they also have it at Times Supermarket, but I I haven’t tried theirs. My family always go to Foodland in Mililani Shopping Center and they cook the steak right in the parking lot all day long. Best steak I’ve eaten. The shrimp has garlic sauce on it and you also get tossed salad too and it includes a soda, all for 6.50. If you want steak only, it’s one pound and it’s 8.99. I hope you enjoy yourself in Hawaii and good luck this year. You can also find Blazin Steaks. They have a number of restaurants around in Honolulu.

My question wasn’t asked, but I can see why. Your #1 coach in HI in my books coach Mack. Thank you for making the point at the end about the gay community coming out letting you know that it wasn’t a disparaging attack on them. I have known many gays and they don’t like the grandstanding that takes place at times.

  129. G (China) August 4, 2009 5:02 pm

If I would have asked another question I would have asked, “what new innovations are you planning for the program?” The guy is so unassuming but you know that he’s looking out for the best for the program.

  130. Tombo Ahi August 4, 2009 5:50 pm

Looks like Destin Stewart is going to Tulsa.

Tulsa welcomed 32 newcomers to its football program on Tuesday afternoon.

Among those were 23 scholarship players, including Oklahoma City Douglass star Destin Stewart. The versatile Stewart originally had signed a letter of intent with Hawaii, but changed his mind over the weekend to join Tulsa. His immediate status is unknown. Stewart has 26 catches for 521 yards and nine touchdowns as a receiver, and 76 tackles and five interceptions on defense in 2008.

  131. royal crown August 4, 2009 5:53 pm

    G, (China)

What I’ve seen is that Coach Mack is always looking at ways of bettering his team. And his coaches. And immersing the program and himself with the community in the ways of high school football camps, coaches clinics, speed and quickness clinics, lettermens club, womens clinics, talk shows, radio shows, and this blog.

Since Coach Mack has been here we’ve learned that 2 (Miano and the DL coach?) of his coaches participated this summer in NFL internship programs. And I think it was last spring that 2 other coaches (special team’s coach, OL) were observing spring practices of (I think) Miami (?).

In the recent WB show we learned that Coach Mack invited the St. Louis Rams strength and conditioning coach here last summer to provide teachings with his current strength and conditioning coaches.

We learn that the Coach invites former players to come down to practice and give motivational speeches. One that comes to mind in Jesse Sapolu during spring practice.

Also we learn that Coach Mack wants to work closely with the band and cheer leading units. One of his ideas expressed in the recent show is that he’d love to see the fans adopt a canoe paddling type cheer.

Furthermore he works closely with checking the players to see that they are doing their schoolwork and that they’re graduating.

Also we’re seeing how the Coach is following the lead of other big time programs in that he’s also recruiting players that are quick.

Even how the Coach is pounding the pavement and getting on the recruiting trail earlier is similar to what the big time programs are doing, too.

The tutoring people, the compliance people, the medical staff, equipment people he works with all of them and gets along with them.

Compared to his predecessors (past coaches) most of the preceding points that I mentioned are indeed new innovations. And Coach Mack knows what the template is and he’s going about nicely in feeling in the pieces.

Wow, on July 31 (Friday) this Q&A with Destin Stewart was published, with Destin talking about how he thought he was ready to play at UH and what he wanted to major in at UH…things changed quickly over the weekend!

What are you most looking forward to about going off to college: football or being in Hawaii?

Definitely football. I just want to go there to learn new things and keep getting better. But I’m not going to lie, being in Hawaii will be nice, too.

  149. Garret August 4, 2009 8:20 pm

Miami’s top draft pick was a CB and he wasn’t able to defend Bess yesterday and Bess beat him again today.

For the second consecutive day, during one-on-one drills, Davis had wide receiver Anthony Armstrong blanketed along the sideline only to see Armstrong come down with a ball Davis could have batted away. Later, Davis had Davone Bess sealed to the sideline on an out pattern, only to let Bess make a spectacular catch.

  155. Garret August 4, 2009 8:35 pm

I wonder if the “So You Think You Can Dance” show will add Paula to their judging panel. She is *definitely* qualified to judge a dancing show. So You Think You Can Dance has just been a summer show (including this summer), but for the first time it will also have a season this Fall.

There has been a LOT of speculation that So You Think You Can Dance would bomb in the Fall since there is more competition in the Fall than the Summer…but adding a big name like Paula would give them buzz and would help their ratings.

Anyway, this is just my speculation and I don’t have any articles to back this up. I haven’t even read speculation in articles that she might be added to that show. However, it makes so much sense to me that I’m hoping (for ST’s sake) that the SYTYCD producers call Paula’s new agent.

  156. Garret August 4, 2009 8:46 pm

    Doris,

Thank you for your post #112, as you know far more about the rules than I do. the strange thing is that the 2010 recruit planned to enter Florida in the Spring like what Billy Ray did in enrolling one semester early. Then when his school said that he couldn’t do that (he either had to spend the entire senior year at this school or graduate early), he had to suddenly decide to skip his entire senior year and enter Florida. So, this wasn’t some long-range plan that the recruit had…this was apparently a late-summer decision to skip the senior year of high school.

The recruit is a special case because he had 3 years of high school in Canada and 1 year (officially labeled his Junior year) of high school in the US. He’s only played football for 2 years, so he really could have used another year of high school football before entering Florida. If this sets a precedent that other recruits will try to follow, that could make things interesting.

Texas already gets 1/3 or more of its high school recruits to start school in the Spring after finishing high school a semester early. That to me seems like the ideal because the players have the Spring to go through Spring Practice, get in the weight training program, and get adjusted to classes without having to worry about travel and games. If a player skips their entire Senior year in high school and their eligibility clock starts at their college, then they don’t get that extra time.

    the Load,

The show devoted most of the questions to football, well wishes and one question concerning the incident.

About the incident he answered it with, at first reservations, saying that he’d rather not talk about it. But he then changed course and answered the question beautifully, where he mentions about how his wife bearing witness that he has never used that slur in 40 years of marriage. He also mentions that he received letters and e-mails of support from friends and members of the gay community all offering him words of solace.

How I see it the one question of the incident allowed him to clear the air. And it looked like he was a reformed man after this. It seemed like the weight of indignation fell of his shoulders.

For the most part the show devoted most of the questions to football. With Coach Mack answering the question as thorough and detailed as I’ve have ever seen him answer questions. Where in the past his answers may have been shorter. Today’s his answers seemed longer.

The well wishes mixed in with the questions may have displaced some of the football questions, granted, but under the circumstances it is understandable and IMO warranted.

For myself I thought the Q & A was excellent.

This will be sad for so many players who have used the Arena League to extend their careers, with some getting shots at the NFL after success in the Arena League.

The Arena Football League is on the brink of folding and declaring bankruptcy, an inglorious end for the 22-year-old indoor league that has gone through a year of turmoil.

guyz like me r great backup for Coach, but I admit I’m not a great role model to coach him on da proper verbage cuz its true dat i would prolly egg him on and get da bugga in mo trouble. only in fun, but da censors got a point. today, times have changed. even tho us kanaks always teased each other all da time when I wuz growing up, and dat goes da same all over America, in this day and age of sensitivity I now know I have to improve on my sensitivity so as to avoid being viewed as politically incorrect.

in conclusion, I gotta get my wife to stop calling me pah kay when i won’t take her out to dinner. 😆

    Kekoa

    howzit howzit.

hows da ceded lands and Pops?

saw my good friend’s bradda on TV tonite, talkin about coach’s comment and gay bashin. I didn’t take da coach’s comments dat way. i wince when da cause celebre uses dis opportunity to fudda da point about minority bashin. its true dat there is bashin in da country and its gotta stop, but stoppin takes time. da sucka should not be bashin our coach. cudda showed compassion to a fellow minority an a gettin even streak, like referrin to coach as a da kumu hula hula 😆

dare, coach can get a good laugh and move on! da cause celebre cudda acknowledged dat Coach is not a basher, but used a poor choice of verbage to make fun fo riling up his troops. dare is a difference imo.

: #105 Labrat – August 4th, 2009 at 1:36 pm I am surprised that UH has 60,000 students and still can not fill the stadium.

There aren’t 60,000 students all totaled in the entire University of Hawai`i system. However, I believe that the entire UH System population is about 60,000.

The Manoa campus has around 20,000 students including graduate, medical, and law students plus several thousand faculty plus staff of all descriptions – clerical, maintenance, security, administrators, librarians, researchers, etc.

All the other nine campuses (five on O`ahu, one each on Maui and Kaua`i, and two – soon to be three – on the Big Island) probably have another 32,000 – 34,000 students, staff, and faculty combined. I’d have to go do a quick search to confirm that, but it sounds about right.

The enrollment figures are expect to jump by at least 10% as people return to school to improve their employment options. I know I’ll be one of these folks even though I don’t expect to be at Manoa until the summer or fall of 2011.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CLINIC: As someone who was dissed for asking what was considered a stupid question about football here on this blog, I quickly heard from several other women who said that they would never ask a question here if that was going to be the response. That’s why the Women’s Clinic is a great idea because it allows women to ask “stupid” questions in a safe environment.

I can’t even remember now what the question was, but I know that a couple of times I’ve asked other questions at a T-Gate or T-Party and was told to go buy a copy of Football For Dummies if I want to learn more about football.

That reminds me – mahalo to Garret for responding to my question about NFL quarterbacks. However, I still have some unanswered questions about Colt. Is a five-year contract stardard for signing a rookie? Will the Redskins have to pay him anything if they do let him go even if he’s picked up by another team? Can they trade him once the season has started? What is considered the start of the season – training camp, exhibition games, or when games really count towards divisional championships and playoffs?

    About 2/3 the way in.

  212. Garret August 5, 2009 4:42 am

    WassupDoc,

A five-year contract is probably standard for draft picks during the round Colt was taken in. Bess wasn’t drafted and signed a 2-year deal, which means that he can really cash in after this season if he has another good year–he’ll probably be making quite a bit more than Colt next year.

It is rare for an NFL contract to be guaranteed. That is why ST and other reporters stress the signing bonus and guaranteed money in a contract–the player won’t get the rest of the contract if they are cut. If Washington releases him, they won’t have to pay him anything. However, Colt would get a contract from another team that will pay him at least as much or more than he’s making now–since Colt is making the minimum, that is a guarantee.

The start of the season is the start of regular season games. Colt could be traded anytime, but a team isn’t going to want to trade for him if he cannot play in preseason games for them because he needs to learn their system.

  213. Garret August 5, 2009 4:44 am

    Jake Ingram update.

New special teams coach Scott O’Brien told reporters that the exciting battle for the long-snapper position between veteran Nathan Hodel and rookie Jake Ingram is going well. “Right now, they’ve come in, they’re working hard,” he said. “We’ve got a long way to go and every day is an evaluation. Every week will be an evaluation. Right now, we’re getting evaluated in team situations. The next step will be the preseason. So far, they’re both doing good and need to keep improving like any other position.” Should neither pan out, recent acquisition Rob Ninkovich has snapped in the past

  214. Garret August 5, 2009 4:45 am
