Valdes giving thanks

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.

It most definitely was for freshman Aaron Valdes, who said he got word from coach Gib Arnold that he’s finally cleared by the NCAA for team activities with Hawaii.

He should be able to practice from now on. But don’t expect him out there in any game action this year … barring unforeseen circumstances. He’s missed all the team’s practices so far — other than as a spectator — with the exception of a 10-day exempted window in mid-October.

Valdes was probably going to redshirt no matter what. This just allows him to get in-system with plenty of time to spare for next year.

Lastly, the starting five showed off its festive side.

Will have an update on the status of redshirt freshman Brandon Jawato (who did not dress in the 71-66 win over North Dakota) after tomorrow’s practice. He was said to have an unspecified injury after the game.

UPDATE: Gib Arnold said Jawato had a bruised thigh. He practiced on Friday with a slight limp.

Thanks for the catch. My fault, corrected to North Dakota. Too much Thanksgiving turkey.

I have a question on the Wahine. Why was Shawna-Lei Kuehu not dressed for the match last night? Is she sick or injured? Notice she is getting less and less playing time as the season progresses. As a freshman she was one of the best all-around players on the team, a lots of rebounds, steals, and blocked shots. However, her greatest strength then was as a passer. Too bad if her game has fallen off.

    Hey Lanai,

Shawna hasn’t played the last few after she took a blow to the head last week. I’d expect her back soon. Yep, she did a little bit of everything a couple years ago when she got on the WAC all-freshman team along with Kamilah. She’s still coming along after missing most of last season then having her kid over the summer.
