The morning after, Averill on Facebook chat

Can’t be said enough that Wednesday was a great win for Hawaii. Quite the lively discussion on the blog last night. Most interest we’ve had all season. Thank you.

Throwing out the reminder that Averill will be live Facebook chat today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. HST for an hour.

couple of other things from the previous thread.
>> on crutches was sophomore redshirts OPP Ian McKellar, knee surgery earlier this week. out for the rest of the year. may go for medical hardship, which would be applied for after he exhausts his eligibility. Has only played in 2 sets, well under the percentage needed to apply.

>> young woman is the student manager. she doesn’t travel with the team

Wade was on Bobby’s show this morning discussing the hight level played on both sides of the net. Took a little jab at Wahine fans who say the men’s game is nothing but power and side outs. Last night there were a number of really good rallies that disprove that.

If you haven’t taken a look at the box, impressive hitting percentages for both teams. UH at 394, SC at .381.

Wade said it was amazing that they were down 2-0 and hitting around .430. said he told the team that they were playing well, just needed to come up with some defensive players (blocks).

the young woman is gabby matautia.

austin matautia is her brother who plays for moanalua who has received lots of interests from the likes of usc, ucla, hawaii, etc. gabby was also a first teamer out of american conference I believe playing opposite at temple university and graduated in 2014.

last night was thrilling to watch. it was awesome seeing the warriors rally after getting down 2-0. it was a patchwork lineup, but different players stepped up at different moments in the match, led by sedore, averill and franciskovic the entire way.

Agree with Warrior fans that last nights thrilling come from behind win was great. Didn’t think Wade’s comment on radio mentioned above was intended as a “jab” at Wahine fans (many who are also fans of the men as well). My impression was that it was more to the perception by some that the men’s game lacks exciting rallies (perhaps more common in the past than in today’s men’s game). True there is generally more power overall of course, that is gender related. But it is also fast paced, with it’s share of exciting rallies as well, certainly in evidence last night. Perhaps related to more emphasis on defense, not sure. Anyone who has been around coach Wade over the years knows how much he appreciates and knows the key role and difference Hawaii’s fans can make in the outcome of big matches, both Warrior and Wahine. Would love to see the Stanley packed Friday night, like we see at Wahine matches, as USC will certainly show up intent on avenging last night’s loss.

    3. po’okela: Thank you for letting us know who she is.

Gabby seems to bring unique skills because the job descriptions for this position that I’ve read don’t mention participation in the coaches’ game-time huddle!
