Stokes, Brereton arrive

Here are a couple of items to supplement what will appear in Tuesday’s paper about next season’s UH basketball schedule:

—————————

Two newcomers arrive

Two of the five UH newcomers signed for next season — freshman point guard Shaquille Stokes and junior forward Hauns Brereton — have arrived in Hawaii for summer school. Stokes said he arrived from New York on Monday.

The two are expected to join several of the UH returnees in the College Summer League at Manoa District Park.

The three Los Angeles-based players signed for next season — Gerry Blakes, Dillon Biggs and Ronnie Stevens — aren’t expected in until next month. They will likely not travel with the team on its upcoming international tour to China and Japan on Aug. 5 to 21.

Arnold said “probably” 10 players would travel to Asia. That would encompass most or all of the returnees, plus Stokes and Brereton. Point guard Miah Ostrowski won’t go, as he’ll be practicing with the UH football team.

—————————

Though the July 1 start of the new fiscal period came and went without a finalized new contract for Arnold, he was positive about its progress.

“The administration’s been great. We’re just working out the final stages,” Arnold said. “I don’t see any rush, haven’t felt any rush from either side. Trying to put together a long-term commitment, and I think it’s going well. Really well.”

His contract can be made retroactive to start on July 1.

    I dont like hearing this, too bad Blakes, Biggs and Stevens won’t be making the trip and bonding with the rest of the team. Hope they all get into school.

    Cal Freshmen only recently completed classes and still need to clear clearinghouse (?); their Basketball progress likely will be slowed — BUT as long as they can still get a jump on one or two sessions of summer school That should help their transition — getting into the books & good study habits — although i know Coach Gib is good at getting people schooled on meeting commitments and doing their work; the jump to college schoolwork AND Bball can be tough — i know i had to learn how to study ‘cos high school, even though private and honors, didn’t require any where near as much work or self-discipline … we also need to end the trend of losing first-year players, especially freshmen (like last year and in past years that helped lead previous coaching staffs to lean heavily on JC players)

    Hey Ball-ers and Bloggers — put da money where the mouth and blogs fly and let’s get Dayton to China-Japan with the team … (maybe Gib can sub some coverage in lieu of missing players?)

    Shoulda said: Get Dayton AND/OR Brian (better Both!) to China-Japan …

    i don’t like the sound of the three los angeles freshman not making it here in time for the trip. that is definitely a setback for them and the program.

    it sounds more like a subliminal message is in those words; like perhaps academic qualification is still in the air.

    do you happen to know when they’ll start to play in the summer league? I went the other saturday and just saw Pii Minns and Zane playing. will probably head to a few this week.

    Do we know the dates for “The SECOND Summer Session” versus The “BRIDGE” Session — it sounds like the Bridge Session might start and run a few days later — this might give the freshman ‘a chance’ to learn/experience at least one or two classes “College Style” — i can’t imagine California’s High School ‘College Prep’ is All that Much’ Better than Hawai’i’s what with their catastrophic Budgetary/”Bankruptcy” Concerns and the “Party Rep” of many of their Colleges …

    From the Box Score, Sounds like new freshman Point Guard Shaquille Stokes might have been establishing his game or manhood last night — playing for ARMY in Summer League (didn’t see the game — comments anyone?) he outscored Julian Sensley 27-17 –
    – shoot first pg or just hot(?),
    – Gunner(?) or Took high percentage shots?
    [They won by 21 points, 105-84, so style of play may not have been as critical]

    Eagle: Check out the video on Dayton Morinaga’s warriorinsider.com web site; from the short snippets, it didn’t appear that Stokes had a “shoot-first” mentality.

    To Guy in the Office:

    Thanks; Went to look tonight for myself;

    Agree — Stokes (even his words make it appear clear that he) seems to understand on different teams you take on different roles (paraphrase: “…maybe at U.H. where everybody can shoot, i’ll be mostly a passer…”);

    tonight he had two steals (or 50-50 plays depending how you score) and three assists in the immediate three minutes prior to halftime; that’s a momentum turner; other times he took it straight to the hoop for high percentage shots (sounds like he missed more from outside tonight than in his first two games); ALL Reports, including from experienced point guards who ought to know — he’s a real deal impact player … i’ll consciously give him some space to be a freshman, but players are already talking ’bout taking in PRACTICES so that they can see the Miah-Shaq daily battles which may be better than many of the game time battles …

    THAT’S When you know you’ve got a real good team – when the practices seem tougher than the games like almost All Volleyball and Most Football Weeks …

    I learned more coaching this year than hopefully I ever have to in the next few years….. None of Blinns sophomores have committed to a four-year program yet.While Arnold speaks to four-year programs and tries to find new homes for this years outgoing sophomore class he will also begin to work toward building next seasons team.Its a blessing he said. It makes me even more hungry to get on the recruiting trail and get this team going in the right direction which I think we will with time.In addition to spending more time recruiting Arnold will be able to fully install his system next season.
