AD committee should consider 6 more
The trouble with Ben Jay was he was asked to hit the ground running but nobody gave him a map. It’s difficult to be the new guy in town who meets the power brokers and, soon after, has to ask them for money. “Nice to meet you … is that the name on the check you’ll be writing?”
Which is why a few names need to be added to the recently announced search committee for the next UH athletic director. Here are my suggestions:
> Ronald Williams, interim president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Lots of folks, including the past governor, insist UH should receive help from HTA. So put the head guy on the committee, and maybe he’ll be willing to help.
> Shan Tsutsui, lieutenant governor. Yes, yes, Hawaii is very political. So why not invite a guy who was friendly to UH as the president of the Senate, who orchestrated all those UH events on Maui, and is on Gov. Ige’s “favorites” cell list? Conflicts shouldn’t be a concern. Politics is about connections.
> Al Chee, Hawaii manager, policy, government and public affairs for Chevron. OK, I admit I have no idea what those titles mean. But Chee is the face of Hawaii’s Chevron, and always helps UH football and volleyball. Oil is money — not as much as it was two months ago, but still — and UH athletics needs money.
> Gwendolyn Mink, educator on U.S. equality law, poverty policy, gender issues and American politics for three decades. Her mother, Patsy Mink, spurred legislation that became Title IX. She’s more than qualified to help pick an AD.
> Carl Furutani, associate director of UH-Manoa’s student recreation services. He jokingly is referred to as the “Upper Campus AD” because he runs the most successful athletic programs on the Manoa campus. The Warrior Center is the best facility on campus. It is clean, with state-of-the-art equipment, gender equitable, and it operates within its budget. Furutani is in charge. Plus, as a former UH baseball coach, he knows what it takes to navigate through all the b.s. in the athletic department.
> Mark Valencia is a prominent lawyer, Army veteran and UH football season-ticket subscriber. Valencia writes and lectures on issues affecting the health and fitness industry, served as commissioner of the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps Reserves. He is involved in the Read Aloud America Program and Drugs Free Kids project. He also is undefeated in representing clients against UH.
First! I like the other guy’s comments from Dave’s post yesterday. “If this were the ’80’s, I vote for Checkers and Pogo to be on the search committee.”
What a joke. Why do we need a committee anyway? Somebody have the almonds to make a decision. Nothing’s ever gonna change.
To get a good-ole-boy athletic director, you need a good-ole-boy network on the search committee. That doesn’t always work at other institutions but for UH I think that’s the only way it will work.

Of those names mentioned above, I am only familiar with Al Chee. You may not know this Stephen, but Al is also the new Head Coach for Wrestling at St. Louis. He’s a very engaged with many groups from across the community due to his work at Chevron. The other names look promising too, but I can say that Al has a passion for athletics and knows a lot of people. He’d be a great add to the list.
What ever they do, let’s please expedite the hiring of a new AD!

I’m still thinking they should at least approach Bob Hogue about the job. He probably won’t want it but it doesn’t hurt to ask. He has experience in Hawaii politics and he is experienced I’m sure in NCAA policies, etc. Not to mention he has helped to move the Pac West conference to where it is today.

ST — those name suggestions might be better on an Athletic Director ADVISORY committee, rather than a hiring one.
Also, in my bias, I think an AD candidate should be able to define the terms in the “Pidgin to the Max” book with at least 80% accuracy without reading the book. 🙂
DJ is definitely gone to Wisconsin. defensive staff for Wisconsin will have DC Dave Aranda, DL Inoke Breckterfield and DB Daronte Jones.
Chow needs to hire Miano already.
Miano had some porous defensive backfields too, sometimes.
The AD issue is a non-issue.

Why not? At least we won ball games when he was on the sidelines. He has the energy and experience to teach and recruit.
I would take Miano as a DB coach. Did well developing a lot of our better safeties. Needs to find a Texas contact to recruit faster corners but I liked what he did with Lono Manners, Mana Silva, Richard Torres, etc. Attracted some good walk ons.
Miano did a decent job developing players, but I want a coach that will develop the DB’s as a unit. When individuals don’t necessarily match up talent-wise, there needs to be sound scheme and assignment understanding. I want a coach that can help with that.
Too many times one DB would get beat and we were often left wondering where his help was.
haha pretty sure Miano’s units did not get burned as much at Daronte’s unit. how many long pass plays have we given up in the past 3 years? so much it was a weekly occurrence.

The San Francisco 49ers have hired Jim Tomsula to become their new head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Tomsula was promoted internally from defensive line coach, leapfrogging defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in the process.
Let Clune pick his own DB coach…Coach Chow should elevate Clune to Associate HC and DC. Chow should concentrate on getting an OC and get a OL coach.
Miano is history…Let’s not go backwards. I’m sure there are better qualified DB coaches out there.

City College of San Francisco: Head coach George Rush will announce his retirement on Friday, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
I mean no disrespect to the people chosen to serve on the AD search committee. But the make up of the group does not strike me as being rich in those who have a sophisticated knowledge of running athletic departments. I don’t really know how any of us can expect to consistently put a quality product on the field when ouradministrative structure is not an optimal one. Until this problem is recognized and taken seriously I cannot feel confident in our sports teams moving ahead in ways that are possible. But perhaps I am wrong about this and it would not be the first time. But first we will wait six months for a new athletic director in then we assemble a Committee with lots of very competent people but not ones with the closely attuned sensibility about athletics administration. I am not surprised but can’t help be a little perplexed and disappointed. If I am incorrect I will be the happiest incorrect person in Honolulu.
Do the Barry Alvarez two step — Hire Norm Chow as interim. UH can save money.

I would put Ben Jay on the search committee. I would have him talk to all the leading candidates for the position. He would let them know exactly what they are getting theselves into. I would hate to see the next AD leave saying,”Had I known….”.

lgw . . . I think that’s just short term memory. Daronte’s units got beat deep quite a bit. You are correct. But Miano’s did too.
Too many cooks (may) spoil the soup. Love to see Shan Tsutsui on the committee, but it’s too much of a political powder keg for any politician.
I think Miano would make a good defensive back coach. Look at how many guys we got on all WAC teams. He also had players in the NFL. We were usually among the leaders in interceptions which we hardly see anymore. However, do not think Chow will hire him.
I wonder what coach Chow’s response to the question “If you had known…….” would be. But, I already know.

The one constant in all this turmoil in the athletics dept is that a losing coach in his sport is still thriving there. Why is that.? If anything he should be given a guide line for next season X amount of wins or do the right thing and resign.
How much more can we lose, support wise and worst money wise. How long will it take to rebuild what he has destroyed?

How can we get a big name and who is a big name anymore? Miano played in the NFL for many years, he loves UH football and doesn’t have to relocate from the mainland. I thought the defense played harder and smarter during Macs years and it wasn’t all Aranda or Mac, it was also Miano’s leadership.
While the make-up on the search committee is somewhat puzzling to most of the bloggers here, it could be that the new AD has already been chosen and the committee is a rubber-stamp.
Nothing prevents the search committee to interview non-candidates to see what they think about the candidates. They could interview Ben Jay, for example or Coach Beeman (or whoever) to get their input. They could interview ADs from other schools to get their suggestions. They could even bring back Jim Donovan (for his input)! Both he and Mr. Jay probably have more insight in the job than the search committee!
I believe it’s good news that D Jones is leaving after the poor showing from the DBs the past 2 years – especially 2014.
Clune should have a major input on the next DB coach – but, that won’t happen as long as Chow is on board.
If Chow let’s loose, it may be a welcome sign for the 2015 campaign.

Don’t agree…..that DJ leaving is “good news”……considering that he has been one of the primary recruiters for the program……with the constant assistant coaching staff changes.
Bob Wagner’s connection to UH football and Hawaii would seem to make him a good candidate for the AD Search Committee.
Dave Reardon had a funny column about the search committee. He said that Norm Chow should be on it!!! Funny guy!!! Can you imagine the interview process?

Wags would never consider it. He got fired as HC for goodness sakes! I dont think Miano would even consider being a DB coach since Chow just disregarded all the old staff from Mac tenure and brought in some duds. Miano did coach some very good DB’s that did go to the NFL as well as some almost shut down small corners. Remember the Colt Brennan era? Also, I dont think there are a whole lot of DB coaches today that DONT GET BURNED. Like another blogger mentioned, a good pass rush equals an excellent defensive secondary.
I will be happy if the search committee (any) does a thorough background check on all the applicants…even checking unresolved internet rumors of said applicants.

Forgot to mention that Miano took a losing Kaiser Hi team and brought them a winning traditon like the old days. If u get good coaches, the good players will come. Also, remember Ron Lee’s tenure at Kaiser? Pretty good too! Look what happened to Kalani! they won more games in one season than an entire decade I beleive, maybe 2 decades. Im shooting from the hip but I’ll stand by it. Never mind if people accuse coaches of raiding players to transfer. Bottom line is they want to play for good coaches! Same for colleges!

Even though he made his first career start at NT for the Pitt Panthers in this past Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl game against Houston, wonder if Jeremiah Taleni (Class of 2013, Kailua HS) now having any thoughts of coming home to play ball (now that his DL coach Inoke Breckterfield has moved on to Wisconsin)……since he still has 3 seasons to play 2?

That chow is going to wait to hire jones’ replacement is a step backwards for recruiting purposes. A prospective student/athlete would surely want to know who his position coach will be.
A new coach could at least perhaps drag with him one he was recruiting.
While the time it has taken to staff (or not) the OC, QB coach, and WR coach positions doesn’t seem to bode well for a quick replacement of coach Jones, there were rumors flying around the blog near the end of the season that UH would lose a coach. Hopefully coach Chow has been proactive and the AD is supportive. I guess the measuring stick is when an announcement for a coaching position goes out the door.

Utah and Utah State still haven’t named their DCs. Utah still doesn’t have a D-Line coach. Could Kevin Clune and Lewis Powell also be moving on? Hope I’m wrong.
IMHO, Chow may have been an outstanding OC, but when it comes to making HC decisions, it leaves a lot to be desired.

Warriors got a grade of C- for the season according to a USA Today report. Interestingly, Bowling Green received the same grade that according to the report, “had too much talent to lose six games.”.
