Hawaii outside hitter Kupono Fey (21) follows his kill attempt in the game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at the Stan Sheriff Center. Darryl Oumi / Special to the Star-Advertiser

Mentioned on the earlier thread but just got some more details.
Video Challenge System will be used for the tournament. both teams have the right to call video verification for referees’ decision twice per set. If whoever calls for the challenge wins the challenge it does not decrease the number of challenges still available for the set. If team loses the challenge, it decreases the number of challenges left in the set by 1.

The up ref has the right to ask for a video verification in the case that there is a conflicting call and the call would ended the set/match.

These are subject to video verification
1. whether the ball is in or out.
2. ball contact with the antenna.
3. antenna or net contact by a player.
3. foot fault on serve or 3-meter attack
4. Libero’s feet position on an overhead set (in front of or behind the 3-meter line)

couple of other things but these are the main ones.

Ohio State wins the video challenge so instead of UH being up 3-1, the Buckeyes got the point and the serve back at 2-2
Hawaii out to a 15-13 lead at the TTO.

  3. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 7:28 pm

Fey with the slam back of the service overpass. UH up 18-14. TO OSU

  4. warriorfan January 8, 2015 7:34 pm

I’m loving Jennings at setter, his connections are smooth. Not a lot of miss sets, He definitely betters the ball and not a blocking liability.
Way too many service errors though.

  5. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 7:34 pm

A UH block makes it 23-18. TO OSU

  6. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 7:37 pm

    Hawaii wins 25-19

  7. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 7:49 pm

Hawaii up 9-5 in Set 2. TO OSU.
service errors are very much part of the men’s game.
OSU had 6 errors in Set 1, UH 5.

  8. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 7:53 pm

another block on OSU and Hawaii up 13-8. TO OSU. UH with a 7-1 edge in blocks.

  9. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 7:55 pm

nice dig by Kanetake, Fey finishes it. UH up 15-8 at the TTO

  10. warriorfan January 8, 2015 7:59 pm

okay hawaii looks great, but I expected them to blow out OSU with some of their starters missing. What I like is hawaii’s blocking and Jennings setting.

  11. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:03 pm

bit of a bad rotation, was 20-10. OSU comes back to within 20-15. TO UH

  12. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:08 pm

another bad rotation. UH had set point at 24-17. it’s now 24-22. TO UH

  13. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:10 pm

    UH wins 25-22.

  14. warriorfan January 8, 2015 8:10 pm

UH got really careless to end set 2, really bad errors by Fey(passing) and Averill.

  15. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:30 pm

    OSU up 11-8. TO UH

  16. warriorfan January 8, 2015 8:32 pm

Im shocked by how bad Averill is doing tonight, hitting wise. I think he’s trying to hard.

  17. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 8:32 pm

hawaii looked fantastic for most of the first 2 sets, but they got sloppy at the end of set 2, and it appears some of the consistency issues that has plagued this team for the past couple of years are still there.

  18. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:34 pm

Zarkovic blocked. OSU up 15-10 at the TTO

  19. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:35 pm

    17. agreed. but give OSU some credit. they’ve cut down on the serving errors and adjusted their block. Averill does seem more anxious, trying too hard.

  20. warriorfan January 8, 2015 8:37 pm

Wow Averill, is just not getting it done tonight. UH needs him to play like an all american every match.

  21. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 8:39 pm

it’s not just credit to OSU … but to their subs! lol …. it’s their subs who are making hawaii’s starters look really bad right now …

  22. warriorfan January 8, 2015 8:39 pm

Was hoping that this year Siki would finally be more consistent, but so far same ol Siki.

  23. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:40 pm

Fey blocked. OSU up 21-13. TO UH

  24. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:41 pm

    22. second match of the season and you have come to this conclusion?

  25. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 8:41 pm

siki is tremendous in system and has the full array of shots. but on the bailout sets, he struggles, being slightly undersized and having to challenge a big double/triple block on those types of sets.

  26. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:42 pm

UH brings in Jones, the transfer from CSUN. to set. he got cleared today.

  27. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 8:43 pm

jennings struggling on his back set to the right pin. sedore has had to chase and adjust to those sets all night. that inconsistency from jennings was masked, in part, b/c the other offensive outlets were doing so well early on. but not anymore.

  28. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:45 pm

    OSU wins 25-17.

  29. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 8:47 pm

cindy — do you know why andrew lutz and driss guessous did not make the trip. mclachlin mentioned on the telecast, but did not go into the reason. injured? ineligible?

  30. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:48 pm

    29. no i do not. sorry. haven’t talked to Hanson.

  31. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:56 pm

another great dig by Kanetake. Zarkovic with the roll shot. UH up 9-6. TO OSU

  32. warriorfan January 8, 2015 8:58 pm

They mentioned Grissous ( or however you spell it) is out for over a month with injury.

  33. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 8:59 pm

Fey on the overpass. UH up 13-7. TO OSU.
UH up 15-8 at the TTO.

  34. Brandon January 8, 2015 9:07 pm

Siki has 18 kills hitting almost .400. So, I doubt you can say he’s not being consistent warrior. Even when you posted that he was hitting .260. Not exactly bad

  35. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 9:08 pm

OSU has closed to 18-14. TO UH

  36. Brandon January 8, 2015 9:12 pm

Siki is winning this match for us. He’s having the match of a lifetime

  37. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 9:15 pm

    32 — thanks, warrior

  38. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 9:15 pm

It’s 23-21. TO UH. team having problems closing.

  39. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 9:18 pm

    UH wins 25-23

  40. Cubicle1126 January 8, 2015 9:24 pm

well, nice to see hawaii turn things around. they all but left the arena in set 3. credit OSU’s subs and henchy for sparking a rally.

kanetake played well, passing, floor defense, and setting the second ball. the middles blocked well, but were non-existent on offense. holt just is not a strong offensive option, and OSU’s blockers keyed on averill, which opened up the outsides.

siki played well overall. sedore came through. jennings — there were some great things, but some inconsistency as well. might just be he needs to get used to starting.

when hawaii struggled in set 3, i would have liked to see mol come in. he played great in spurts last year, and i thought for sure he’d be a starter this year.

looking forward to the rest of this weekend’s matches. i still have faith that this group can push for a top 4 finish this year. the tools and experience is there.

  41. warriorfan January 8, 2015 9:25 pm

Hope Averill will play more like himself tomorrow.

  42. warriorfan January 8, 2015 9:29 pm

Siki turned it on in the fourth, When i wrote that he had a whopping 6 errors already. He just needs to cut down the errors this season and could be all american.

  43. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 10:08 pm

    41. Averill was double and tripled teamed a lot. but he’s going to get that all season.. Plus Franciskovic had a number of low sets to him. their timing wasn’t on like it was last week.
    42. as for Siki, he was 12-6-24 through 3 sets, finished 20-8-37 overall so was 8-2-13 in the final set. he has tended to get better as the match goes on.

  44. Cubicle1126 January 9, 2015 9:35 am

cindy — do you know if Vaughn Wellenreiter will be active on hawaii’s roster this year? … or redshirting? … (if u know)

  45. Don January 9, 2015 10:19 am

Good to see something from FIVB filtering down to the NCAA level…is there any chance that this will be adopted by the MPSF or NCAA in the near future?

  46. Cubicle1126 January 9, 2015 10:26 am

interesting posts/rumors on VT coming out of washington — jim maclaughlin leaving and headed to notre dame?

  47. mei mei January 9, 2015 10:26 am

glad Siki got player of the night… i thought he did great!

i am def. liking the coach challenge implemented… i hope it comes over to the women’s side!!

looking forward to 2nites match! go Warriors!

  48. karmady January 9, 2015 3:36 pm

Cubicle, you have to be set to be an offensive option.

Sadly, I can see dumping on players with off nights will continue from the comfort and anonymity of posters’ laptops, as it has in years pas. How about just supporting the team, and keeping the negative armchair player commentary to a minimum? These are YOUNG men, they read these awful comments. Think before you type, or at least try to.

  49. Cindy Luis January 9, 2015 3:59 pm

    45. will follow up with a story probably for Sunday.
the problem is this will cost money. Very few schools are televising games so schools that don’t will have to add a number of cameras in the right angles.
I don’t see it being implemented for conference play but they might do it for the NCAA tournament.
As you see, it’s only being done for the UH matches, which are the only ones being televised this week.
Best quote came from Penn State Coach Mark Pavlik.
“You think schools like New Jersey Tech are going to be able to afford this?

  50. Cindy Luis January 9, 2015 3:59 pm

    46. yep, noticed the rumors yesterday.

  51. Cindy Luis January 9, 2015 4:02 pm

    44. Wellenreiter is in school. They are waiting for the paperwork to be cleared. Wade said it should happen ‘sooner than later’ Could be next week when school starts. He’s already used his redshirt year at CSUN

  52. Cindy Luis January 9, 2015 4:11 pm

will have a new link up shortly. At the arena. Ohio State has been leading most of the Set one. Up 11-9 at the moment.

Here’s the link to Friday’s new thread.

What we are starting to do is closing the comments from a previous thread when a new thread goes up. that way we don’t have to have multiple conversations going on about the same thing.
Which is why you will see the comment box disappear.
