Live blog: Hawaii 3, Duke 0

band

Mentioned on last thread that the UH band is here, about 17 of them including the director Gwen and 6 cheerleaders.
Gwen said that a generous donor paid for the group’s airfare and hotel. and that they borrowed some instruments from UW. Donor’s name was Albert Kano.

UH band played the national anthem. Odd not to hear Hawai’i Pono’i.
UH starters the same, Higgins, Taylor, Adolpho, Mendoza, Magill, Greeley, Manu-Olevao.

  2. islandman December 5, 2014 3:14 pm

How come ESPN 3 is blacked out to me for the match ? Uusally i can get ESNP 3 on the internet.

  3. Cubicle1126 December 5, 2014 3:16 pm

besides espn3 … how else can we watch this match? i’m at work, and don’t have a tv nearby …

  4. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:16 pm

UH up 15-9 at the TTO. Wahine didn’t have a service error through 13-7. then 2 straight. Duke with its first SE makes it 15-9.
UH passing well, Duke’s defense good. but UH leads 11-9 in digs.

  5. Aloha73g December 5, 2014 3:17 pm

Junk Oceanic is making ESPN3 black out Hawaii. You have to be an Oceanic subscriber to log in!!

  6. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:18 pm

Two bad hitting errors by Duke and it’s 17-9. TO Blue Devils. Kahakai retains serve.

  7. Cubicle1126 December 5, 2014 3:19 pm

aloha73g — i’m an oceanic subscriber … and it’s blocked for me, even after i log in to espn3 … if ur in hawaii, you can only watch on tv, apparently.

  8. Z December 5, 2014 3:20 pm

Duke feeling the pressure but SEs not helping UH. They need to stay focussed.

  9. Ninth Island December 5, 2014 3:20 pm

We are on a roll…keep it up girls…don’t let up!

  10. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:22 pm

Greeley into the stanchion going for a ball. came up limping. could be the same ankle she rolled during fall camp. it’s 18-11. TO UH.

  11. Cubicle1126 December 5, 2014 3:23 pm

    uh oh

  12. NinthIsland December 5, 2014 3:23 pm

    hope kalei is okay

  13. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:23 pm

    Long in for Greeley

  14. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:29 pm

UH serving for the set at 24-14. TO Duke

  15. NinthIsland December 5, 2014 3:30 pm

    Let’s Go Bows…great start…

  16. Kazu December 5, 2014 3:30 pm

Long going have to break out and have good match. She can bang pretty good.

  17. Z December 5, 2014 3:30 pm

Ginger is doing well right now.

  18. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:31 pm

    Hawaii wins 25-15.

  19. Andrew December 5, 2014 3:34 pm

Awesome for Long, but they’re going to need Greeley

  20. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:37 pm

Duke had 7 total kills in Set 3, 4 by Sklar, 3 by Obeime.

  21. Z December 5, 2014 3:38 pm

Duke has no answer for our middles.

  22. Maverick December 5, 2014 3:39 pm

Not that it matters, but UH is undefeated this season when winning the first set.

  23. Maverick December 5, 2014 3:46 pm

Bit of an ugly set 2 right now.

  24. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:49 pm

Hawaii up 15-13 at the TTO. Greeley has come back onto the court but is trying to see how much weight she can put on her ankle by holding onto the stair railing near the tunnel

  25. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:51 pm

    21. thanks for the reminder. 14-0.

  26. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:54 pm

Hawaii up 20-16. TO Duke. nice transition plays by Hawaii. Mendoza with some key digs.

  27. Maverick December 5, 2014 3:55 pm

    24. thanks for the intel on Duke from yesterday.

  28. NinthIsland December 5, 2014 3:56 pm

Finally gaining some separation this set…keep it up

  29. Turfwar December 5, 2014 3:56 pm

Ginger Long absolutely ripping her kills. Pounding balls harder than any other Wahine so far. Where has that been?

  30. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 3:57 pm

Magill with the kill. it’s 23-18. TO Duke

  31. Maverick December 5, 2014 3:59 pm

    28. Maybe because it is the tournament and her career is coming to a close this month. Can give someone a little extra motivation.

  32. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:00 pm

Taylor with an awkward kill. nice dig by Long. UH wins 25-19

  33. Z December 5, 2014 4:03 pm

Way to step up to the plate Ginger Long.

  34. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:04 pm

I think with Long you’re seeing a player stepping up the way they expected she would her entire career. She is playing well in a tough situation.

  35. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 4:13 pm

Great things happen to people who persevere. Ginger is playing her heart out!
    Love Gingers explosive armswing!!!

  36. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:14 pm

Kahakai has served UH to a 5-2 lead. TO Duke

  37. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 4:14 pm

Ginger may be the “Secret Weapon” we needed and nobody knows about!!! How’s that one!!

  38. wildcard December 5, 2014 4:15 pm

    34. told you all ginger has a high velocity gun

  39. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 4:16 pm

I always still thought Ginger should be a starter…I am not saying for who? Just see who plays the overall complete game of volleyball steady!!!

  40. Andrew December 5, 2014 4:18 pm

Geez Ginger sure ate her Wheaties this morning

  41. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 4:18 pm

Ginger plays quick….changes the overall team speed!!

  42. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:18 pm

Ginger with a solo stuff, has helped UH go out 11-3

  43. Maverick December 5, 2014 4:21 pm

It’s a good time of the season to be playing well.

  44. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:25 pm

UH getting a little sloppy. it’s 17-8. TO UH.

  45. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:34 pm

Hawaii wins 25-17. it wasn’t that close

  46. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 4:36 pm

sorry no stats. Gametracker froze at 14-3. nice win for the Wahine,

  47. Cubicle1126 December 5, 2014 4:43 pm

so tomorrow’s match is only on the Pac-12 Network? and not on OC16?

  48. Astroboy December 5, 2014 4:44 pm

My heart sank when Kalei went out, but talk about Ginger! “Girl on Fire”! And always a joy seeing Olivia float above the net.

  49. Andrew December 5, 2014 4:45 pm

A quick match was key for them so they can be as fresh as possible for tomorrow’s match.

  50. wildcard December 5, 2014 4:46 pm

the heavy troopers of na wahine wins! and how bout ginger longs watermark? she played admirably and as an outstanding wahine!

  51. warriorfan December 5, 2014 4:47 pm

As expected Duke was no match. They looked a bout how they always looked everytime I see them play slow and sloppy.

Happy Long and Olevao stepped it up.

Need to play much better tomorrow.

  52. Kazu December 5, 2014 4:49 pm

Anyone want to watch LBS and San Diego UCLA showing.

  53. Maverick December 5, 2014 4:50 pm

BYU beats Arizona–first seeded team to lose

  54. wildcard December 5, 2014 4:52 pm

well now its scouting u-dub isnt it? shoji said unh is going to win. so if that happens then its ocsports

  55. warriorfan December 5, 2014 4:52 pm

    Tommorrow, we need Kalei G.
Wahine also need to pass well, UW serves tough.

  56. Z December 5, 2014 4:53 pm

Duke had no answer for our middles. That will change.

  57. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 5:03 pm

I expected more out of Duke. Again, tonite we were the more “athletic team” hands down. I guess the Big West conference from our performance shows we may have a tougher conference than the ACC. Who knows? Against New Hampshire, I mean Washington (lol) funny and strange things always can happen. I am glad to play Washington….As a coach, I would try to create tomorrow’s match like the Final 2 National Championship match. Why wait and play the cupcakes early. Let’s settle it now and see how we do… We can do it!! Let’s Go Bows!

  58. Cubicle1126 December 5, 2014 5:05 pm

kazu — yes, beach about to sweep

  59. NinthIsland December 5, 2014 5:10 pm

Glad I got to watch it here from Vegas. Espn 3 came through. Hawaii looked great. Needs to play better tomorrow night. I think we have a legitimate shot at beating Washington. Go bows!

  60. Kazu December 5, 2014 5:12 pm

    57. Good start for Big West.

  61. Cubicle1126 December 5, 2014 5:13 pm

the #16 seed Kansas just lost in the first round to UALR (Arkansas Little Rock) …

imagine if Hawaii got sent to this regional …

  62. warriorfan December 5, 2014 5:14 pm

Man too bad UH wasn’t sent to Kansas, or North Carolina.

Just hope the Wahine pull of the upset of the year tomorrow.

  63. islandman December 5, 2014 5:15 pm

Duke not used to traveling so far ? I think they traveled almost as far as UH did. They did travel to Stanford and Santa Clara earlier this season and lost . Last year they played on their home court in the NCAA tournament.

How come OC 16 didn’t stream the match like they usually do for the home matches ? I did catch some of it on TV though, for me it was on channel 16 .

When i checked ESPN 3, it shows the Wahine in a still picture and the screen says “Thank you for Watching ” , although the game was blacked out earlier ?

And like Cindy says, the Live Stats were stuck at 14 – 3 .

  64. warriorfan December 5, 2014 5:20 pm

    It wasn’t travel,
I think Hawaii was just too quick and athletic for Duke, Duke’s middles looked slow and a bit out of shape, no offense to them so Hawaii got a lot of split blocks and Higgins played well, although she had some issues in the third set.

  65. NinthIsland December 5, 2014 5:24 pm

Espn3 just blacked out the first set then came on …

  66. JustAsking December 5, 2014 5:25 pm

Hey Cindy— Thanks (as always) for the match updates! And it must have been nice to have our band and cheerleaders there. Mr. Kano, you are awesome!!!
    Go Wahine!!!!!!!!

  67. Kazu December 5, 2014 5:32 pm

If UH plays Washington tomorrow i feel they have a good chance to advance. Teams playing well and if Greeley is not 100% she could rotate with Long. Coaches will come up with a good game plan. May go to 5. At least UH have the band there thanks to a supporter.Darn i don’t have Pac 12 network. Guess its the radio.

  68. Ron December 5, 2014 5:40 pm

WF is right, we will need Greeley tomorrow. Ginger did a great job but she is not the elite all-around player that Kalei is. If Ginger starts, we will have a smallish left side attack most of the time. We will need to go to our middles more which means we will need better passing. Duke’s blockers were big and slow, Washington’s are big and fast. I am counting on Dave to come up with a game plan that will help us prevail.

  69. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 5:55 pm

Re TV: OC sports was not staying for Saturday regardless if Hawaii won. It will be on Pac-12 TV or streaming online ESPN3.

  70. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 5:56 pm

    UW up 2-0, pretty ugly. 25-9, 25-6

  71. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 5:57 pm

Greeley is OK. she was cleared to return to the match but the coaches decided to hold her out since Long was playing well.

  72. Mark December 5, 2014 6:02 pm

    stats for those who care….http://www.ncaa.com/game/volleyball-women/d1/2014/12/05/hawaii-duke

  73. warriorfan December 5, 2014 6:06 pm

UW is just serving poor new Hampshire off the court. UW’s serving worries me if they are on, which I hope they are not tomorrow.

  74. HigH N Wide December 5, 2014 6:14 pm

good news on greeley. serve receive the best i’ve seen this year.

  75. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 6:27 pm

    Washington wins 25-9, 25-6, 25-18.
    Match is 5:30 p.m. HST

  76. wildcard December 5, 2014 6:50 pm

well so as expected new hampshire was free fodder to washington. hopefully shoji had his spies scout washington during their play right?

  77. wildcard December 5, 2014 7:11 pm

    1. i think its because this is ncaa (national) so the hawai’i pono’i is not allowed nor was it allotted any time anyways. the pono’i wasnt played last year when hawai’i hosted in either match.

    68. ocsports pretty much obviously wasnt going to stay since they knew u-dub is going to easily win and pac-12 network gets the bid for broadcast since it is washington after all. similar to why the blackout on espn3 because ocsports got the bid and espn recognizes that its less burden on their network.

  78. islandman December 5, 2014 7:34 pm

    68. Hope the streaming comes on on ESPN3 tomorrow .

    64. NinthIsland; thanks for the info on the blackout for only the 1st set today .

  79. 'ohanaInBellingham December 5, 2014 7:37 pm

Mahalo. Mr. Kano! Let’s get that in the morning newspaper so that all the fans back home can appreciate how huge this gesture is. I am almost beyond words.

  80. 'ohanaInBellingham December 5, 2014 7:44 pm

It was good to see that KG was able to put all her weight on that right ankle as she worked on it on the sidelines. No need to sit or to ice it.

  81. islandman December 5, 2014 8:17 pm

    From Duke website:

“We have had a tremendous season and we just didn’t put it together tonight to play like we’re capable of,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “Hawaii served tough and didn’t allow us to get into system. They played great defense too, so they really controlled the tempo of the match.”

  82. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 8:22 pm

Great news that Greeley can play. Always thought Ginger was that other person and and showed she can deliver. If Greeley cannot go full speed during warmup I suggest going with Long. Yes, Greeley is so steady and actually some power off her sharp cut shot kills, but playing Udub, the player needs to be mobile. Praying she is, but Ginger will Go! (Eddie would Go). Even if Greeley is ready to go, Long can come in for Tai especially if she has difficulty passing, etc…Always thought Long could contribute plus she brings speed for lack of height. Whatever or whoever plays, let’s just leave everything on the court girls!! 1 and out or 1 and advance….

  83. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 8:36 pm

    regarding Duke’s travel.
New Hampshire and Duke were on the same charter flight. Flight originated at NH, came down and picked up the Blue Devils. From what I was told, every player had an entire row to relax. Duke coach was asked about the travel and the time difference. One reporter tried to make a big deal of it, saying how hard it must be on them to come all the way and play 3 time zones different from home. Coach didn’t take the bait, said it had nothing to do with how they played, that it was how Hawaii took them out of system.

  84. Volleyman December 5, 2014 8:37 pm

Krissy Jones got some playing time against UNH. I guess her injury healed enough for her to play

  85. Cindy Luis December 5, 2014 8:38 pm

She got in late. They wanted her to get some court time, MaLaughlin said.

  86. rosepetals December 5, 2014 8:55 pm

So if we can’t subscribe to Pac12 Network, we won’t be able to watch it?

  87. bleachercoach December 5, 2014 9:16 pm

I got Pac 12 network. I wish OC 16 was the one covering it!! OC 16 color and team is far better than that network. (IMO) The picture is great on Pac12 network, but the court shot appears closer and clearer on OC 16. Then again, I am bias….lol

  88. islandman December 5, 2014 9:33 pm

    86. Cindy says is will be on ESPN 3 too .

  89. blunite December 5, 2014 10:25 pm

If Wahine are in system and Taylor Higgins sets imaginatively, they beat Washington. Washington minimizes errors by passing off the net. This means no cut shots, but lots of balls deep into the back court. Probably 1/3 of them will be long so Wahine backrow should take note. From the 5 foot line dinks stay in the air longer so that’s a plus to Wahine. Nikki has to vary her shots (line, cross, cut, dink) and speed will be the determining factor in the middle. Roll shots will be utilized by both sides to overcome the blocks.

  90. warriorfan December 5, 2014 10:36 pm

We need big matches from Tai and nikki tomorrow they need to play the role of Emily and Jane in 2012 match, since passing may be a bit shaky.

BTW , “IDK” have you seen that diggingnawahine blog? kinda proves you were right on the money lol

  91. wildcard December 5, 2014 10:42 pm

    68. i beg to differ on comparing greeley and long. greeley may be a 6 rotation player who can shock the world but shes not elite all-around player quite just yet. i guess she will get there when she gets more d1 experience under her belt. meanwhile long actually played like an elite this evening and rose to the tough occasion.

for ginger she actually did everything this match remarkably. comparing to the rest of her season, i would say this match so far is the best of ginger long. i mean she besides having her high velocity arm swing, she also:

dug and pass bullets well in fact better than the first ucsb match

had the most block solos and gave some sturdy blocks

she was agile, made it a priority and went for the ball with purpose including she did some tricky one handed set of the ball

she served up her first ace, had 0 service errors and her serve was good that there was even a couple runs on her serve (either she practiced on her serve and/or switched it to a standing float similar to sarah mendozas or kalei adolphos serve, which is much more simple and better than that ‘small girl, timid running jump float into the net.’ sidebar: ana ponce needs to work on hers or shoji needs to get rid of that serving substitution especially against washington)

anyways ginger long, she was shrewd and the woman on fire. she did a piece of everything today. (i wonder perhaps scott wong can offer her a scholarship for sand as a grad since she cant get a scholarship for indoor?)

  92. wildcard December 5, 2014 10:49 pm

tai did dynamics, she was tactical, perhaps she can play with rage on washington tomorrow?

sarah bear also was speedy today. before greeley went down, it showed that she was roaming and seizing the ball, now with u-dub tomorrow she just needs to be able to dig and pass every bullet and keep from the couple shanks/sunders on her.

  93. OrbitalRipZ December 5, 2014 11:05 pm

I said that you can count on both Big West squads not being one of the early exits, and both Big West teams are back, as in “back in the day” back with solid wins.

And no surprise: 3 of 4 WCC squads became “one and done.” Only BYU survived, and the Cougars upset Seed 11 Arizona in Round 2 to move on to the Regionals for the 2nd consecutive year.

Round 2: Sealy’s Seed 12 UCLA vs Gimmillaro’s LBSU @ UCLA….. McLauglin’s Seed 3 Washington vs Shoji’s Hawai’i @ Washington…If the 2 old guards have any more tricks up their sleeve, now is the time to show it. It is time — one last time — to steal the spotlight from the league-record 10 squads of the Pac-12. It is time for these 2 “back in the day” coaches to be of national relevance again. To be the talk of the town. Go Bows!

  94. wildcard December 5, 2014 11:47 pm

i forgot to add to ginger long did everything that she also jousted on the net too and shoved that ball over right into the duke players face!

  95. wildcard December 5, 2014 11:50 pm

does anyone think perhaps the net in washingtons alaska airlines arena is flimsy? it seems to move so easily with sound when struck.

btw cindy did you find that treasure your late brother-in-law had stashed in lake washington you had talked about?

  96. Cubicle1126 December 6, 2014 12:08 am

Hawaii was ready from the get-go tonight. Good to see their fire and peaking at the end if the season. Their first win over a ranked opponent couldn’t have come at a better time.

Washington might just be too much tho. But I think Hawaii can at least challenge them.

They’ll need Greeley for sure. Glad to hear she is cleared to play but bummed that she won’t be 100%. She was playing really well elevating and hitting with authority up to the point she got injured.

  97. Cubicle1126 December 6, 2014 12:14 am

OrbitalRipZ – what happened to ur faith in the WCC teams? You’ve taken great pains to talk them up all season … and to lets us all know about it on this blog … but now ur saying ur not surprised that 3 of 4 of them bowed out early? How quickly you’ve turned on them …

  98. wildcard December 6, 2014 12:39 am

    88. cindy says it will be on espn3? theres no evidence it is on watchespn.com

need to get pac12 network i suppose.

  99. wildcard December 6, 2014 2:51 am

btw we can make that character debbie (stadick) kniffin who had to say on avca about na wahine losing because they are ‘volatile’ enter her words. our lady bows sure were volatile vs duke and now washington is next.

  100. Wahinez4eva December 6, 2014 5:14 am

    93 Well said….

  101. skycap December 6, 2014 5:51 am

Here is Replay on Espn3 Women’s, Volleyball, between UH, and Duke,

    http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2254351/

  102. High N Wide December 6, 2014 5:54 am

Hawaii has been on top of their game in the last 2 matches. Serve/receive/passing has been excellent with all five (5) hitters seeing action. Seems like they’re playing
better, faster, and are more relaxed since their last trip to Seattle. Magill is finally seeing more sets with what seems to be new wrinkle on the left (31). Or, is this just my imagination….. :o)

  103. islandman December 6, 2014 7:48 am

    102. High N Wide—Nikki had 31 Total Attempts and Magill had 15.

  104. Cubicle1126 December 6, 2014 8:28 am

For those with Oceanic Cable, you can add the Sports Pass to your cable subscription for $9.95 … that way you will get the Pac-12 Network and can watch the game. You can always cancel it after.

  105. setaone December 6, 2014 8:28 am

Glad to see Magill hit the 3-1. I think we have all been wanting to see her diversify with a slide. That 3-1 was effective last night.

  106. Cindy Luis December 6, 2014 8:47 am

thanks for listing the OC option on Sports Pass.

I was told it would be on ESPN3 but I’m not finding it on the schedule now.

so it is on the Pac-12 network, premium channel on OC.

There will be a live stream on Pac-12.com/live Not sure if/what the charge.

  107. Cindy Luis December 6, 2014 9:13 am

see new thread for some updates

Duke University School Paper article on lossagainst UH: http://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2014/12/06/hawaii-sweeps-duke-volleyball-ncaa-tournament-first-round#.VINjJmd0w9Q

  109. OrbitalRipZ December 6, 2014 11:29 am

97 : If you read what I’ve said about the WCC — and apparently you didn’t — you will see that I said the NCAA will reward them for their over-performance last year, at which time the WCC’s 2 unseeded bids upset seeded teams to reach the Regionals. I said the NCAA does not forget, and the NCAA didn’t. Quote me one place where “You’ve taken great pains to talk them up all season” if by talk them up you mean that I said they deserve 4 bids. I do not. I stated what I believed would (and did) happen — the NCAA does not forget what happened a year ago when a league OVERperforms. End of discussion. I do not care to dignify your sophomoric comments any further.

    Go Bows!

  110. Cubicle1126 December 6, 2014 12:50 pm

aww OrbitalRipZ — i thought i raised a valid question. sophomoric? i didn’t think i slung any insults your way.

when i have responded to you with some facts, you don’t respond back. oh well. agree to disagree then…

  111. wildcard December 23, 2014 1:18 am

i should deposit direct link to this match here:

    http://espn.go.com/watchespn/player/_/id/2254351/

although its on watchespn, it plays the ocsports version instead (guess espn version was blacked out eh?)
