I love how the hitters run to the setter or the net. As if they are calling plays and executing it. Our hitters are just reacting to a set but they don’t know what set they’ll get.

But look at what Dan Fisher is doing at Pittsburgh in just his second year. that Guy just wins period. when Dave retires we need to give him a serious look. He will get the best out of the talent he coaches.
After set 1 LBSU and UH were tied in digs give or take 1, but after set 2, LBSU pulled ahead with 47 against UH’s 37 digs

71. I think the main problem all season has been no real leader and inconsistent setting. Magill is a terminator. and I think UH’s hitters are all better than Long Beach’s, also the person UH sets the most is a .195 hitter in conference.
70 agreed. I hate to beat a dead horse, but ut starts with coaching. I just saw the UW match against Oregon and I was very impressed with the UW’s freshmen and how cofident they were. Its all about conditioning and grooming.

Oh well…another loss to a (barely) ranked team…I think a lot of people knew that UH would struggle this year, but it’s just difficult watching it actually happen…This is just not UH’s year…and if it’s any consolation, Beach will probably lose in the first or second round…
Barring a collapse by LBSU, UH will not win the conference title. And UH has yet to beat a ranked opponent. As I’ve said before, this will be and is a down year. Frankly, another loss and I’ll start worrying about even getting into the tournament this year.

It shouldn’t be this bad they have the talent. Some head scratching moves. Tai can’t pass,she should not be playing back row defense. Higgins is too small upfront, and can’t block. Long Beach does not have superior talent, they do have a better setter though and that’s huge.

I see that overall Hawaii had more points than Long Beach but not when it counted. I suppose the first set loss hurt the most (which I missed due to buffering). I saw that Dave Shoji was teary-eyed. So Hawaii will not win the Big West title this year.
Well, at least Long Beach is graduating four seniors instrumental in our loss. Maybe next year Hawaii can beat Long Beach.

Should Shoji retire after this season UH will probably be looking for three coaches. Don’t see Chow and Taylor being around next year the way things are going with football and basketball.
Passing is really bad this year. Difficult to set poor passes, although I am surprised our setter is not performing better given her high prepVB rating.
I’m still very happy to be a fan of UH Wahine sports…from the little I saw tonite, looks like the softball team got some good new blood and Wahine basketball has been getting better and better each year! I’ll never give up on our vb wahine either…not being conf champs probably means more to the fans than them. They can still make the tourney and we all know that this adversity will help make them stronger!
No thanks softball is boring, and women’s basketball drives me crazy with the horrible shooting and overall sloppiness. I guess my best hope is for the beach team, although it will hurt their title hopes if Nikki skips the season to heal.

Higgins was over rated by prep vb. I am disappointed I haven’t seen much improvement from her from the preseason to now, NONE.
Wahine BB will be the one to watch. It seems Beeman has finally gotten all the ingredients to make a run for the conference title.

Because for the longest time, Beach has been a cocky arrogant team, and it’s fun to watch teams like that get their comeuppance…and as far as the BW’s reputation is concerned, it will never be great & BW teams will never get much respect because the coaches & the NCAA are too busy being awestruck by the Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12 & SEC…
There’s the old cliche, passing and serving win games. At the beginning of the year, serving was one of Hawaii’s strength. It has fallen off considerably in terms of service aces ratio to service errors. Passing has been lacking so Hawaii has to go to the outsides too much, neglecting its strong middle attacks. Teams have been stacking the outsides.
Is this the first time the Wahine will not win a conference title under Shoji ?
119. I don’t want Long Beach to advance far either. Hell if its up to me they get swept easily in the first round and UH advances to the sweet 16, however I just don’t see that happening the way this team is playing at this point I’d be happy if they just get a bid to the tourney.
Shoji seems to be phoning it in IMO.
This is a tough year for us fans, but it doesn’t seem as bad as the year we lost all our records…was it 2005? Longest win streak, longest home win streak, longest conf win streak, longest home court win streak, never lost to a an unranked team at home…it was crazy…all those streaks gone and we’ve not come close to matching them again. We’ll get over you it, and they’ll return to their winning ways, even if it isn’t absolute domination. Let me be clear, I’m not disappointed IN our Wahine, I’m disappointed FOR them. They’ll be okay, and so will we the fans.
119. BW will get respect if teams beat the power conference foes, make the tournament, and win a few matches in the tourney. BW had three teams in last year. Key is to continue to put teams in the tourney. Not a short-term fix, but something to strive for. Saying it is a consolation for UH fans that LBSU loses early in the tourney when they get there is very short-sighted. But I guess some folks like too look at the trees and not the forest.

PCAA became the Big West in 88. UH was 2nd in 91, 4th in 92, 3rd in 93, 2nd in 94,
this will be, however, the first time they don’t win the league crown or a share of it since 94.

IMHO Hawaii has blue chip players on the floor and the reason for the inconsistency is overcompensation for the offensive system (slow, high, and wide).
Check the height of the sets of each team and Hawaii’s sets are the highest. Translation: slow, inaccurate location, and allows ample time for a double or triple block to form. The system is causing the players to try too hard, resulting in errors.
Note: Hawaii made no significant changes against LBSU and suffered the same result.
The Long Beach libero is not only the best in the conference she definitely has a chance to play on the A-1 or A-2 National squads.
Long Beach simply played better than the Wahine and, though it sickens me to say so, they deserved to win. They looked ready for the post-season. The Wahine looked like they were just improvising the best they could.
The Wahine’s passing needs work but more concerning is the setting. Higgins has yet to show she can better ball with any consistency. Poor set choices, horrible set location and most worrisome no improvement from the start of the season. Not sure what the problem is. Are we (coaches and fans) expecting too much, putting too much pressure on her?
the Wahine had a chance , but negatives are still there (NO BLAMES) , but some huge mistakes at bad times cost them dearly (and have to be corrected). This is OUR team and I , for one , will admire them! Let’s finish strong and build for the future.Keep your heads high players and staff ! GO BOWS

and in set 5. really now, start slow, lucky to catch up and then let them run away the same again turning you over (change over at set 5, first to 8 point)
in hindsight maybe they need to not only drill practice at 20 all but also at 10 all as if a 5 set (and make them fatigued before they do so)
passing ok, setting mediocre, mainly on poor set choices why wasnt the ball set to the middle particularly magill? other than the opening set, when more sets were to magill, it contributed to the team dominating (ie set 4)
speaking of magill because she can jump 10′ 7″ over anybody and hammer it down over the block, compared to adolpho, magill should be middle hitter and adolpho should be middle blocker (she hardly attacked including running her moloka’i slide much this year and with success) though shes big in armor. whats the difference if any between middle blocker and hitter anyone?
tai should of been pissed again playing tonight, she was angry but not mad enough, you notice her face cooled down starting in the 5th set. then she wouldnt have had to put her hands over her head and practically pull her hair out afterwards.
and so much for vs the beach. supposively someone said reid is average, but na wahine gave away it all to her, mackie and okpala. also their setter was sneaky and pulled many fast ones (not all unchecked) compared to higgins being more predictable. but oh well the beach does have a more veteran team compared to our ladies. congrats to them, i wouldnt be surprised they could contend deep into the post-season.

i should note these:
the libero switch up between mendoza and kahakai…i know shoji says maybe it provides a spark but even since at the irvine game i didnt see there was a problem with mendoza, its more like the hitters got in her way when she was trying to dig but it contributed to a problem later by messing up her plays. same with this match with kahakai at libero, didnt appear to be any problems other than perhaps she is less experienced if servers got lucky tickling the tape over.
speaking of that why is higgins having her back turned sometimes while the opponent is serving? (liable for a just over the tape, drop ace) and if the served ball barely makes it over the tape, couldnt someone in the front row including higgins immediately slam it down? (think during the alumnae game when i think lisa strand ma’a slammed it down when courtney lelepali served, making fun of her serve, which btw she immediately switched to a jump/spin serve)
also some positives: nice plays by the ‘smurfs’ with a mendoza kill, she and ponce with some aces.
anyways for the wahine. it should be watch out csun! and tai should be extra angry to show her and her teams intensity.
3 up with 6 matches left, I think we can safely call the league title (and the automatic for the NCAA Championship) for the 49ers … like the election polls closing at 7pm, and 1 second later the national newscasters calling it correctly for so-and-so candidate.

I mention both the Big West and WCC at the same time because what happens in the WCC will affect what happens in the Big West come Selection Sunday. (And of course both will be affected by whether this year’s Pac-12 gets a record-tying 7 or record-breaking 8 invitations to the Big Dance.)
It will change on Monday, but for now the WCC has 5 teams in the RPI top 50: BYU/28, San Diego/34, Santa Clara/37, LMU/43, and Pacific/48. BYU has pulled away, but the other 4 are involved in a photo-finish horse race for 2nd place. Last year the WCC had only 2 teams in Showtime! This year the WCC could be looking at 3.
Last year the Big West had 3 teams in tournament play, and none made it out of their respective sub-regional. Although Gimmillano recently stated in the Star-Advertiser that he thinks the Big West will again return 3, I say 2: LBSU and the winner of tonight’s (Saturday’s) match between UH and CSUN. The Fat Lady is about to sing and the season-ending curtain is about to fall for one of these.

I said before the season began that Hawaii would have an outstanding season if Nikki Taylor matched her stat of last year, hitting .280; Tai Manu-Olevao hits at least .250; and the 3rd outside hitter hits at least .220. Alas, none made these minimum requirements. The actual stats are .227, .207, and .201 respectively. Not that I’m blaming these hitters. Hitting percentages depend on many factors, including the quality of setting, passes, and being injury-free (not true of Taylor and Greeley). However, one thing on which some of the players can improve—their power. Only Tai Manu-Olevao is really a powerful hitter, the others depending on placement and their height (better angle). I’m not too sure if spending more time in the weight room actually helps in hitting a heavier ball, but it is worth trying for next season anyways.
Great fight in the team to come back being down 2 games but the teams problem is evident. Our passing is horrors. Tai cannot pass and play backrow…Regardless how effective she can be at times offensively and service line, her shank passes is consistent game after game…She needs to work just on that because she had the same problem last
year. It is really hurting our team. On that note, if our passing is not on, Higgins is not that type of setter to create a kill out of a bad
pass. I thought maybe Ginger Long would have been a good substitution to have if you needed a hitter in the backrow. She proved well against UCSB taking over for Tai on a Sunday. These continued bad errors need to be addressed. It is kind of like a football runningback. If he fumbles the ball once in a game, you don’t bench him…but if he does it twice or more in a game….He may be actually hurting your team regardless how much yards he runs for or touchdowns he scores..An all around consistent athlete far outweighs an error prone star..just thinking out loud….Still love these girls no matter what…Go Bows beat Northridge!
I haven’t bothered to read any of the previous comments so I apologize if I repeat any sentiments, but if I do then there’s no other explanation other than great minds think alike.
Obviously that first set was costly should we have capitalized, this could have been a win in 4. Although I wish that Hawai’i pulled out the win, I am kind of happy in a way for Long Beach State. Maybe not in the polls, but they were favored by many to win this year based on their their returnees and their newcomers. Based on how much we lost, many thought that this could be the year in which we do not win or share the Big West title.
Long Beach has disappointed in years past. So it’s great for the conference that they are living up to their billing, however unfortunate for UH. Hopefully we can win Northridge tonight and get into the NCAA tourney as an at-large.
