Thanks all. Paka is 7 and very needy, nearly lost his leg at 3 months after getting hit by a truck so he has surveyed things.
Doing some tests. could be anything from diabetes to kidney problems to nothing serious. will know more when the tests come back.
Agree with most. very surprised that Taylor was nominated over Magill, not sure if they can nominate same player for two awards but that was the reason for creating Defender of the Week, an often overlooked category.
Is it possible that the person who put in the nomination put the wrong name on the ballot? I don’t think Nikki had that great a week so there would be no way she would win. Didn’t she hit like 14% against a lowly Fullerton team?
I think even Kalei Adolpho had a better week than Nikki so the nomination of Nikki Taylor is a head scratcher.
Not absolutely sure but I think our SID submits the nominees names.
Went back to check Nikki’s stats for the week. 16% at UC Irvine and 14% at Fullerton. That is no way Player of the Week worthy.
I guess the SID goofed. Maybe instead of nominating #9(Magill), the guy put #8 and Nikki’s name ended up on the list.

Nikki nearly had a triple double in the Irvine match, and played pretty well against Fullerton, with 6 blocks. Maybe that was enough to put her ahead of Magill, at least for this week.

Nikki played well? I don’t think Shoji would agree with that. Even a triple double(in a 5 set match where there were 200+digs) is not that much an accomplishment. When you hit for such a low percentage, you getting a lot of swings and not terminating. That does not fall under that category of “playing well”. Hitting 70% and 49% with double digit kills in both match is not good enough??? What more you want Olivia to do? Those kind of number should be considered NATIONAL player of the week honors. To not be nominated conference player of the week is a travesty.

34. I did. spoke with Gregory before and after UCI, and Fullerton. She was very impressed with Magill, thought UH got a great transfer.

FYI for you younger fans. Kathy Gregory was the best beach volleyball player in the world back in the day. She was a stud! She was so tough, I was surprised she able to became such a good coach.
38. that she was. She was a very tough coach but didn’t demand anything from her players that she didn’t expect from herself. She has received more than one request to go back to coaching. but agrees the way the NCAA is now the non-BCS/Power 5 conferences have very little chance to win.

The booster club has just been notified that our potluck with the team which was scheduled months ago has been canceled by the Athletic Dept. so they can have an autograph session after the game on Sat. They really know how to make people who support the team both spiritually and financially feel special! NOT!

i saw rise of the wahine last night. good film. patsy mink and donnis thompson’s story tells itself. the filmmakers got a lot of footage and photos. they pack so much in that it’s a little overwhelming at times, and the film meanders and loses focus a little about halfway through. a few tweaks and a little more editing would do the film some good. but the filmmakers (kaneshiro and taylor) mentioned that was the point of hitting the film festival circuit and would be making adjustments to the film.
but otherwise, it tells a great story through the words of a lot of folks who were family, friends and who worked with congresswoman mink and thompson, and who were involved with the wahine program and UH athletics in general. and also a lot of footage and photos. i’ve heard congresswoman mink and thompson’s stories told in a few different re-tellings now, but not in such a complete way as the film.
there was a great comment from an audience member after saying that it’s a film that should be shown to kids in school. the filmmakers do have that as a goal as part of their distribution plan.
someone mentioned 30-for-30 on ESPN. i was just thinking that as i was watching last night too. it’d be great if that actually happens.

Hawaii needs significant improvements or Friday will hurt; LBSU out-blocked and out-hit Hawaii. The hitting percentages were Tai Olevao (.054), Kalei Greeley (.103), and Nikki Taylor (.091). I hope the Hawaii coaches speed up the offense; just depending on Magill to change the result is tantamount to doing nothing.
I am just tired of hearing all the negative things said about the WOMENand the coaches. Some of them are so hurtful. I hope the team and coaches don’t pay attention to them. By the way, Nikki Taylor played a outstanding match on Sunday which more than qualifies her for player of the week. Last I heard Sunday was part of the week the nomination was for. I know the team will do the best that they can and that is all that we should care about.
Even with the low hitting percentages Hawaii was able to take it to Five in the pyramid with Mackie Having a career night, I’m not worried, UH will kick butt in 3.
When I heard UH warriors got a commitment from a “top notch” outside hitter, I was hoping it was Tj Delfalco, never heard of Brandon Rattray before but glad he choose UH over Northridge.
57 Agree. I was at the UCI game and thought UH played well in set 1 and 2, but UCI played better in large part because they had scouted UH very well. Whatever we did, it appeared that they had already anticipated it. We could not get a kill as our setting and hitting were so predictable. In set 3, UH staff made adjustments that changed the momentum, and UCI could no longer “synch-up” with us. IMO, our staff needs to make in game adjustments much more quicker. For the Beach, we got to be better prepare for their multi-hitter attack. Lastly, it clear that NT’s elbow is still very problematic. I give her lots of credit for hanging in there.

On another note watched a Missouri-Texas A&M match the other day on the SEC Network to see Carly Kan and the middle blocker for Tx A&M is former UH football player now the head coach of Bowling Green Dino Babers. She looks just like her father and is also an excellent athlete. She played very well as did Carly who does a lot of things for Mizzou. Keala Loxley also played well at setter.
46. opinions? ill share mine. first impression: was title ix something that hindered women and girls or was it insufficient? you were included in the film cindy. curiously i thought the ssc would be included in the end somewhere since it was primary built for wahine volleyball and no evidence dr donnis thompson had anything to say about that or stan as ad who lobbied for it. there were talks including from the audience about getting it underway 30 for 30 yes.
there was a very good question from the audience: why you have to look down the 3rd page of sports (in SA) to read about the wahine especially when this past weekend they made the comeback vs irvine and win vs fullerton whereas the football team is on the front page and they were losers.
the audience at rise of the wahine included shoji, his wife, tmo, kalei model a, tk, meeettss, courtney lelepali, ali longo, liz ka’aihue stoltzman, lisa strand ma’a, ryan kalei tsuji and several others.
there was also an afterparty for rise of the wahine film festival at 1144 and some of them were getting their drink on and having a blast on the dance floor.
and for the rest of yall if you missed any of these then you lose!
60. the SSC was not primarily built for Wahine volleyball. It was built for the arena sports, both volleyball teams and both basketball teams since all but men’s basketball were in Klum at the time. The men were at Blaisdell.
Sheriff had a dream for 10,000 seats. He was the AD at the time. Donnis was not part of UH after 1983 when she became the Hawaii superintendent of schools.
I can remember Shoji saying he’d be OK with 4,000 seats because funding kept stalling and he just wanted something built. Sheriff held the line at 10,000

59. As for the play given volleyball vs. football. If you look at the Sunday paper, there is an eight-page wraparound dedicated to college football. It’s been done like this for years. take those eight pages away and the main section has the Wahine on the cover.

that audience persons complaint is legit. i have a copy of other than sunday paper and wahine volleyball is usually sandwiched in the sports page between football with football being the first headline on the top of the page followed by the last thing on the bottom of the page and the football talks about how they lost. the wahine is typically sandwiched or in the middle not simply cover.

Men’s basketball generates more revenue and has more sellouts than volleyball.
not saying that the complaint isn’t legit. But someone mentioned the Sunday paper which, during football season, has the 8-page ‘Blitz’ that is a wraparound the main section. And the main section has the Wahine on the cover. We’ve been lucky to have photographers on the mainland for the away games. There have been numerous times that my re-writes have no photos from the match.
There are some deadline-related issues that sometimes force the stories to be played in certain ways. Not saying it’s right or fair but sometimes just the way it is.
Typical UH move, I was really looking forward to talking to some girls that I didn’t have a chance to. Why another autograph session, they already had one last month.

Cindy – in the film, Blangiardi made a similar comment that the stan sheriff center was built primarily for the wahine …. since they were selling out blaisdell when they did play off campus. Of course, he may have also been speaking symbolically.

Riley Wallace would beg to differ about the purpose of the arena. Wahine volleyball sold out the Blaisdell a couple of times, but that was a major point of the film in that Donnis Thompson wanted matches played there to prove it could be done. that was in the 1970s.
Last time they sold out the Blaisdell was 81 vs. UCLA.
They used the Blaisdell several times for the HAL Classic. but they didn’t use it often partly because of the rental fee. They did draw well,
70. well the modern day purpose is wahine volleyball since its reportedly to be the second revenue generating sport unless mens basketball is supposed to be first now. and even if mens basketball is ahead or surpassed wahine volleyball, theres that new additional wrinkle including that firing of coaches gib and akana, departure of fotu, and numerous other fiascoes involving the uh athletics concerning mens basketball and the ncaa (no clue at all).
That would be quite a coup if Rise of the Wahine was presented via 30 for 30 since they never feature women’s athletics on that series, but instead have a separate vehicle called, appropriately, Nine for IX which showcases the stories of female athletes or the influence of women on male athletes. Either way, I hope it gets some nationwide distro…it was a very good film.
