During communication with the Big West yesterday, did learn that Hartong was nominated. (for those of you who might have worried)
Am doing a story for our special section on Shoji later this week and enjoying conversations with coaches, Russ Rose, Mike Hebert, Brian Gimmilaro to name a few this morning.
Gimmilaro told me Hampton is out again. Not her shoulder but her knee. not sure how long that is for.

When speaking with Gimmilaro, told him the story of why Shoji wasn’t voting this year on the coaches poll. he found it so ridiculous that he said he was going to call the AVCA because obviously whoever was in charge of getting voters shouldn’t have been.
damn, Hawaii needs Long Beach to be competitive this year, and up their win-loss record. that’s harder to do with Hampton out with another injury. hope it’s short-lived, and she returns to the court soon.
I have the feeling that the folks who select NPOW could be seeing a lot of Hartong nominations this year.
3. CL, I’ve heard various things about the relationship between Shoji and Gimmilaro, including their not being good friends although respectful of each other (due in part to the competitive history between UH and LBS). Your tidbit might indicate otherwise. Can you shed some light on the relationship between the two?
You can see how the voters voted on the AVCA site, a lot of new people this year, didn’t see Jordan’s name.
6. there is a mutual respect. don’t think they play golf, like Shoji does with Dunning.
Brian had some very nice things to say about Dave and, having known Brian for a long time, I believe him.
5. be that as it may about the multiple Hartong nominations … she still has to be POW in the BWC for it to happen. she was four times last year.
It appeared that Shoji and Gimmilaro had a more “respectful” relationship, nothing on the personal level that Dunning and Shoji have (even back when Dunning was at Pacific).
#8 Well of course she has to be named BW POW first.
10. not sure everyone knew that.
Hartong never was POW in the WAC and the WAC kind of had a different attitude where some years they wanted to spread the award around different schools, sometimes to the determent of UH’s players.
still gauging how the Big West is treating the award. it changes sometimes if the person in charge of the sport changes.
With all due respects to Hartong, who is Hawai’i’s legit NPOY candidate, she hit for a low percentage in the win against Texas and — even though she delivered like the First Team All-American that she is in the next two matches — she couldn’t carry the team on her wide shoulders to victory against San Diego.
Will the spectacular Hartong be able to take the Wahine to the Promised Land (Final Four), as is expected of the NPOY? Not without adding more tip shots to her poi pounding slams.
Aside: Team Shoji obviously outcoached the Horns staff. But I blame the loss to San Diego not on the team but on Team Shoji, which was outcoached by the 12-year-head-coach Jennifer Petrie. If there’s something like NCOW (National Coach of the Week), Petrie would have my vote.
I really have no complaints about the Big West employees so far but there are a few AD’s SID’s and coaches in the BW who I think are trouble makers.
12 I suppose you could just look at the hitting percentage against Texas .238. But IMHO, you’d have to take a look at how many of those attempts (42, next highest for UH was 25) were trouble sets, sets where she was being double and triple teamed, balls set wide that many players might not have even got to. You could also look at when she had kills that came at critical times, such as 6 of Hawaii’s 16 kills in the deciding fourth set. Adolpho 4. no one else more than 2.
or how at the end of Set 3 with Hawaii trailing 23-21 her kill kept Hawaii in the set at 23-22. and again and again at 24-23, she served a bullet that forced a predictable set to Webster that Hawaii blocked to tie the set. She also had the set-ending kill on Hawaii’s first chance in extra points.
As for San Diego, perhaps UH was out coached but some of it falls on the players who didn’t turn in the performances expected of them. USD should be given a lot of credit for how they played, how they rebounded from that tough 5-set loss to Texas that they could have won.
Re: 12 She did a good job coaching, got some lucky breaks though, would they have done as well without their starting OH2? Doubtful.
13. Guess we have had different experiences with the conference, LC.
Not surprised at all about Hampton being out again, she is injury prone. I believe was injured all four years of club/high school as well.
18. yes, often injured throughout her career. many who have early and big growth spurts have some knee problems as they get older. last problem was her rotator cuff, this time knee.
With Pacific announcing they might get rid of their mens volleyball program. I hope their libero decides to switch to Hawaii , he was really good and UH needs someone to replace cheape.
Have you seen her lately ? Put on a lot of weight.

15. How about big break #1 Hironaka. What a booboo that was, gave 2 pts headstart to USD and turned the momentum around. Old age IDing incorrect players, inexcusable for all the years he’s been so called refereeing.
re; 20? she looks about the same to me, was also a big boned gal but that hasn’t stoped others from being all americans/ not being injured all the time.

Don’t know who the strength and conditioning coach is for the Wahine.
Love to see what the football Coach Beamer (sp) can do. Lots of 3 game tourneys that takes it toll early on.

Arizona won their tourney 3-0 and 3-1 (can’t recall who the other teams were). Jane started and had 10 kills both matches.
Arizona was 2-1, lost to Kansas, and beat two top ranked teams, Morgan St and Central Arkansas. Croson was the MVP.
Re: 14 You make the case for Hartong being named Tournament MVP — and there was no one on the court from any of the 3 teams who came even close to Hartong’s plays.
But I don’t see anything being said that makes the case for a NATIONAL POW. One of many candidates, yes. The winning candidate, no. This was not the weekend performance that had the vball world saying WOW. That performance will come, as it did last year, but this wasn’t the totally in-the-zone Hartong.
A solid pre-regular season performance, but not the GREAT PERFORMANCE she is capable of. Goooooooooo Bows!
They lost to the kansas team that lose to central Arkansas, don’t think Arizona will help the rpi much at all, in fact I expect them to have double digit losses in Pac 12 play.
Sorry, Cindy didn’t read through all the comments, but IMO, i’m sure Hartong would have probably won that award if they had beaten San Diego. Beating Texas was something that shocked the DI nation (so to speak), that voters of the POW award were no doubt paying attention to Hartong during this past weekend. But that loss really hurt her candidacy.
Re: 29 & 30 Along with then No. 20 Kansas, visiting teams competing in the Arizona Invitational included Central Arkansas — mid-major team that won its 3rd (in the last 4 years) Southland Conference regular season title– and Morgan State (5-21 record last year).
Arizona, Kansas, and Central Arkansas ended their nonconference season opening weekend with 2-1 records. Morgan State went winless.
Arizona — projected to finish No. 8 in a loaded Pac 12 conference — lost to Kansas (1-3) but easily beat the other two unranked teams. After the tournament, Kansas dropped out of the Coaches Poll — unofficially falling to No. 36. Lol.
Croson was named (deservedly) to the 7-player Arizona Invitational All-Tournament Team, but I don’t think they singled out a MVP.
Just wanted to ask who`s the ref for the matches coming up? I hope it`s not Hironaka again? I`ll take Ernie Ho or Diane Hansen over him any day.

@ 38. My bad forgot. Yes, Denise. Diane is the artist. LOL!
22. have spoken to someone about what happened with the down ref. the down ref is supposed to check that the players are in the right spot on the court. If they notice someone in that shouldn’t be there, then they let the coach know and the coach is supposed to have the opportunity to sub the right player in since the whistle hasn’t blown. The problem was the down ref “didn’t do his job’ but ultimately the correct decision of reversing the point was made since UH was out of rotation.
The mistake got caught when UH went to sub ‘the correct player in’ at 1-0.
The association assigns the officials for the matches. I never know until they are there at the arena.
25. not sure why you are asking about the strength and conditioning of the Wahine. They do use some of the coaches as the football team, such as Heffernan.

22. BTW, USD did not get a 2-point lead to start Set 5. It was a two-point swing when UH’s point was erased and the point given to the Toreros. Instead of a 1-0 Wahine lead, it was 1-0 USD. It was tied at 1-1 on Hollins’ service error. UH never corrected its play by play which had the Wahine leading 3-0 to start.
@ 38. Cindy not ref bashing just an observation. Hironaka has in the past made some bad calls which tends to stick out. This tendency does get noticed by a lot of fans and coaches. I can`t remember other refs getting the same attention. That`s all. Sorry for making any negative comments just noting what I see as a fan watching the games. I`ll drop it here.
John, not directed at you per se, but did delete the comment calling for his resignation. don’t think Dan is alone in making poor calls. Dixon comes to mind. The linesmen have been atrocious over the years. Problem is the limited amount of qualified refs here, further limited by those who actually want to do the UH games because of the attention put on them by TV.. They’ve gone through a long certification process.
I do think Hanson is probably the best but she does have problems being the up ref, same with Marvin. Verneda Thomas is really good but … let’s just put it this way, she played in the 1968 Olympics.
Cindy thank for explaining that. Let`s get ready for NMSU tomorrow night and move on. Hope Shoji gets his win and becomes the all time winningest coach. Go Bows!
Cindy, I’m going to state my piece and not mention this issue anymore. Hironaka didn’t do his job of checking the players and shouldn’t have reversed the point for his mistake in the first place. Shoji is correct in that it should have been played over for Hironaka’s not checking and doing his job, not penalize UH for his mistake. No matter it’s still a two point swing in USD favor, compliments of Hironaka. Book closed on this issue and NaWahine sweep the weekend.

Yes, the down ref didn’t do his job. which was what I also wrote in 38. the coach I spoke to said that, however, the correct decision was made in reversing the score because, ultimately, UH was out of rotation.
I don’t know if there was an option to declare a replay. I would have thought there was.

It was Hironaka’s fault not doing his job, that UH was out of rotation. Out.
Not his fault that the wrong player was out on the court. However, it was a correctable mistake that should have been caught before the first whistle blew.
