interesting. Taylor started left back, was subbed out by Passi front left on the first rotation

  2. Setaone October 24, 2014 7:13 pm

Thanks Cindy. I was certain i saw Taylor in the starting lineup. Thought I was going crazy!

  3. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:17 pm

Taylor is out with her elbow problem. Don’t know if she’ll return

  4. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:19 pm

Hawaii up 15-12 at the TTO. Magill 4-0-4

  5. Brandon October 24, 2014 7:19 pm

I’m praying that Taylor’s elbow injury isn’t back. Hope it’s nothing serious because WE NEED HER on Sunday

  6. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:21 pm

Taylor back on the court after getting treatment

  7. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:21 pm

another kill by Greeley and it’s 17-12

  8. Brandon October 24, 2014 7:22 pm

Thank god. Thanks for keeping us updated Cindy! I was almost gonna have a heart attack if she was out again.

  9. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:26 pm

That was an impressive putback by Adolpho. UH up 21-15. another TO by SLO

  10. Brandon October 24, 2014 7:30 pm

Cindy will taylor play tonight. She’s still not in.

  11. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:30 pm

UH closes it out 25-17. wouldn’t have been that close but Wahine had 6 SEs

  12. wildcard October 24, 2014 7:32 pm

is it that na wahine looks rusty or just the gameplay being slow? shoji doesnt look particularly satisfied. this has to be better by sunday vs ucsb

  13. Hbp2k5 October 24, 2014 7:34 pm

Back to taylor, I believe it looked like she got injured when she dove for the ball on first play of the game.

  14. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:35 pm

Taylor back in to start Set 2

  15. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:40 pm

UH has pulled ahead at 9-5. TO SLO

  16. wildcard October 24, 2014 7:43 pm

hmm taylor right arm damaged?? i told shoji and ah-mow to let her know to use her left arm

  17. Moloka'i Ho'i October 24, 2014 7:43 pm

    8.
    It’s G-d
    🙂

  18. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:45 pm

Adolpho stays in to serve Has 2 digs. it’s 13-7. TO SLO

  19. wildcard October 24, 2014 7:46 pm

thats what im talking about! adolpho cannons a serve and takes command of the defense!

  20. hauoli77 October 24, 2014 7:48 pm

I thought we were going w/ a new look? Where’s HUFFDIGITTY? Against CAL-POLY, of course the girls should have some degree of edge and control, but is this truly the best set of players on the court?

  21. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:49 pm

Two straight blocks by the Mustangs out of the TO and it’s 13-10. TO UH

  22. hauoli77 October 24, 2014 7:49 pm

Taylor shows me nothing. Honestly, I thinks she’s content with just putting on a uni.

  23. Moloka'i Ho'i October 24, 2014 7:51 pm

    19.
It’s about suspense, I suppose nothing to terribly wrong with that.
The interest in the blog I’d bet is up.

  24. HawaiiMongoose October 24, 2014 7:53 pm

It looks like Higgins is still struggling to connect with Magill, even when Higgins gets a good pass. As much of a weapon as Magill is, you just get the feeling she’s not reaching her potential because Higgins can’t consistently set the ball to the spot Magill is expecting it.

  25. Moloka'i Ho'i October 24, 2014 7:54 pm

    ^
    Then move her!!! 😉

  26. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 7:59 pm

Koelsch for the final couple of plays. UH wins 25-18

  27. HawaiiMongoose October 24, 2014 8:05 pm

I got the impression Koelsch mishandled that set because she was thinking more about her feet than her hands. She’s still learning to jump-set and it sure looked like she was ready to set that one flat-footed and then realized at the last moment that she needed to jump. She ended up pulling her feet up off the court at the same moment the ball hit her hands.

  28. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:08 pm

Nice to see Jane Sheriff here. Haven’t seen her in a long time.

  29. Moloka'i Ho'i October 24, 2014 8:10 pm

    2014:

    Stanford vs. Penn St.
    Texas vs. Washington

The winner of the Tx./Wa. game will win the title.
    ..Longhorns!

  30. wildcard October 24, 2014 8:12 pm

you know why na wahine isnt looking much alive? no pink uniforms.

    looks boring…

im switching to over oc16 to watch the oia championship kapolei vs moanalua

  31. HawaiiMongoose October 24, 2014 8:21 pm

Finally, a decent connection between Higgins and Magill, after two awkward-looking attempts.

  32. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:23 pm

Koelsch and Passi with the Wahine trailing 14-11

  33. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:24 pm

Mustangs lead 15-12 at the TTO

  34. HawaiiMongoose October 24, 2014 8:31 pm

The refs missed that touch. Big break for Poly.

  35. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:32 pm

Manu-Olevao hits long. SLO up 21-18. TO UH

  36. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:36 pm

Magill and Higgins on the block. UH closes to 22-21. TO Mustangs

  37. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:39 pm

Adolpho still serving. UH serving for the match at 24-22

  38. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 8:40 pm

UH with a 6-0 run, 5-0 on Adolpho serves. wins 25-22

  39. HawaiiMongoose October 24, 2014 8:41 pm

6-0 UH run behind the serving of Kalei Adolpho. Wow!

  40. Beauston October 24, 2014 8:44 pm

Is this new? Adolpho playing full rotation now including serving?

  41. islandman October 24, 2014 9:03 pm

Dave said they have to find someone to take the place of Tai on Sunday and he said for Nikki; she wasn’t effective because she tweaked her elbow on the first play of the first set.

But Chris McLachlin said she will be okay.

  42. Big Island VB fan October 24, 2014 9:11 pm

Too bad that OC Sports did not show the Stan Sheriff commemoration ceremony between sets 2 and 3. Also, the pregame show was not shown. I was really disappointment with OC Sports staff. How could they miss showing such an important milestone?

  43. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 9:49 pm

    39. Shoji said he was planning to use the double sub more and was trying to conserve his subs by letting Adolpho serve. The middles take serving reps just like the rest of the team. Adolpho had only served once this season. She had five digs too

  44. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 9:51 pm

    40. Taylor is fine. She played after tweaking it in Set 1 playing defense.
As mentioned earlier, it was an odd starting rotation for them, Higgins serving and Taylor left back. Shoji said he wanted Higgins to be the first server.

  45. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 9:53 pm

    41. it wasn’t much of a ceremony. The jumbotron had a nice message from Rich Sheriff and Sheriff’s widow Jane came out on the court briefly. They spent more time on the halftime game that was played with things being stuffed into cardboard ATMs. but gotta keep the sponsors happy

  46. Cindy Luis October 24, 2014 9:56 pm

    30. it was finally a decent connection. you might not have noticed that Magill was told to step back from the net a little. Something they’ve been working on in practice. IMHO she crowds the net a little and has been jumping early. she has more room to swing when she’s a little off the net.

  47. 'ohanaInBellingham October 25, 2014 12:11 am

    46. I wonder if that buffer makes it easier for blockers to be successful against Olivia. CalPoly presented a good block against her, considering that they accomplished this with freshmen and a sophmore. Well, I’m glad that the UH staff is looking at every angle for improvement.

  48. blunite October 25, 2014 1:32 am

This Cal Poly group will be a handful next year. 5 freshmen and 1 sophomore trying to run a fast offense (partially successful in set 3). They took a set off LBSU, CSUN, and nearly UH.

  49. wildcard October 25, 2014 5:26 am

well vs cal polys been pau. the game play looked slow throughout most of the match it seemed, so i switched over to the oia d1 championship and now that was a match. that game went on a five set thriller and looked like everybody is moving (more lively). you also have underdogs small (including a comparatively tiny girl for volleyball outside hitter) going toe to toe with an undefeated bigger and ‘veteran’ (upperclassmen) team, this undersized team looked nimble. the deciding set was very close and ultimately the bigger team had a stroke of luck and won 15-13 (by default, lousy double hit from same action late call). oh well cant wait to see them in the state championships.

not to compare apples and oranges between the high school volleyball vs college but it was more action in that match.

as back to vs cal poly…other than tai being decisive as usual along with greeley and magill, how bout the team captain adolpho? her serve, like before, is sound. its like a bolt action rifle standing float, its low power (including usage) but it always goes over the net and somewhere in the center of the opponents court, it is accurate. additionally, she showed leadership not only in the front court, she commanded the defense from the back court. so efficient was her game, she had no errors.

  50. Ron October 25, 2014 7:19 am

I was a little disappointed not to see the subs get to play more. UCSB will be a much tougher match and a better gauge as to where we are as a contending team.

  51. LC October 25, 2014 9:10 am

    A message for Tai

You really need to rethink this religion thing. The concept of some almighty, magical person up in the sky that has never been seen or heard from is just an unproven theory created by humans to control the minds of mankind. Learn how to believe in yourself instead of using religion as a crutch.

  52. HigH N Wide October 25, 2014 9:54 am

    50. Same here. Not quite impressed with a sweep of a bottom tier Big-West team. In addition, thought we needed this game to give Tai’s replacement and other key backups actual game time experience. Would not surprised if KK would be seriously thinking about getting quality playing time with another school.
Still wondering why we were Huff-less on the right side if even for a set.

  53. Cindy Luis October 25, 2014 10:18 am

51.Those are her beliefs, not yours. it’s not a crutch and she does not need to rethink anything. So leave her alone. The team doesn’t have a problem so why should you?

    52. Koelsch isn’t going any where. She knew coming in what the deal was, likely playing behind someone else

Huff has been training more on the left than the right. the right-side sub is Passi on the double sub.

  54. Kazu October 25, 2014 10:29 am

Didn’t see much change in the match except for Adolpho serving. Thought Shoji was going to use the bench more but as usual it never happened. Wonder if Taylor have second thoughts about playing here instead of going away. Maybe the new one’s might have. The end of the season will tell if anyone will be packing. Whatever happens for now they need to try and win out . Have to watch Davis and LBSU today , hope Davies can pull another upset. Go Bows !!

  55. tongo October 25, 2014 10:32 am

LC Perhaps, it is you who really needs to rethink this. The concept of religious freedom is framed in the constitution. Attacking a religious belief of a student athlete is so un-American. Such a cheap shot that your reflects on your own values and morals.

  56. Cindy Luis October 25, 2014 10:36 am

Have a new post up for Saturday’s practice

  57. Cindy Luis October 25, 2014 10:39 am

    54. I think he wanted to sub more but they also needed the win. They hadn’t played at home in almost 3 weeks so the team needed to get used to being back, too

  58. 'ohanaInBellingham October 25, 2014 11:47 am

The play last night was a bit disconcerting, but I think 57. hit the nail on the head.

Was it my imagination, or were TMO’s and Higgins’ serves softer than usual last night? The impression I get from the videos is that there’s more oomph to their jump serves.

As always, it’s such a gift being able to watch volleyball in the Sheriff! Too funny: I made a mistake in my seating and ended up in the “family” section. Mahalo, again, to Robyn’s husband and Sarah’s mother for making me feel at home!

  59. M October 25, 2014 12:31 pm

    ^
You’re not the same boo chi chi con fresa on VT (are you)?

  60. wildcard October 25, 2014 1:33 pm

    51. LOL

sounds like someone is desperate to have tai in.

but yeah on a serious note ucsb is a menace and it wouldnt be time to lose your fiery player. if you must blame something, blame the football. i bet they lose anyways in homecoming thanks to the highest paid public employee of the state is just too soft on his players. there was also a story about how uh athletics/football was depleted of funds. more like gross mismanagement of funds by someone. they can raise funds, if they can win more. but cant expect much knowing they cant win for jack (unless they lucky).

  61. wildcard October 25, 2014 1:41 pm

    27. referring to koelschs set resulting in double hit, someone remind me why is it necessary to jump set especially if you have a big setter? maybe if its only setting to magill because she jumps into the sky. but who, what, and why needs/requires koelsch to jump set? she seems fine flat foot setting, and that requires less energy and synchronization to do so. she can use her energy to run to if necessary, jump to block or reach for the ball.

  62. wildcard October 25, 2014 1:53 pm

    44. shoji wants higgins to be first server? its about time shoji got the act together and wants to attack first.

    45. glad i gambled on not showing up to SSC. no pink wahine, no looking alive/gameplay is slow, and so much for 2 decades commemorating the sheriff.

add to that cal poly actually somewhat went toe to toe despite being mostly new…oh yeah, not much thrilling serves in part of na wahine.

but then again, referring back to my post #49, a younger ‘less experienced’ squad can very much go toe to toe with a ‘veteran’ squad. in the oia d1 championship, they had ‘super sophomores’ 5 set thrill very close a 5 seniors, 2 juniors lineup.

  63. Cindy Luis October 25, 2014 3:28 pm

    62. not to be overly simplified but … and I don’t know who won the coin toss. Whoever does win the toss elects to serve or receive. UH ended up with the serve and set the lineup accordingly starting with Higgins.

  64. Cindy Luis October 25, 2014 3:32 pm

    58. I think it was your imagination. both players were ripping it, but both also took something off. After six SEs in Set 1, the key was to get the serve in. They had 4 SEs the rest of the match.

  65. wildcard October 25, 2014 4:46 pm

    63. yeah i kind of jumped ahead on your comment. but assuming hawai’i wins the toss is it true they typically elect to receive as some bloggers here have commented? they even cited that receiving instead of serving is volleyball 101 which i say thats bs.

  66. AdmrVT October 25, 2014 4:48 pm

#61. Okay, I’ll take the bait. You really don’t know? You are kidding, right?

Can you think of any top notch setter that doesn’t jump set?

  67. wildcarf October 25, 2014 5:32 pm

    66. i said remind me.

also i didnt say dont jump set ever. but in this case unless you are giving to a player ie magill to jump up into the sky with. if it works setting flat footed and is not necessary why bother jump setting? especially when you have a big 6′ 1 setter?

  68. 'ohanaInBellingham October 25, 2014 8:48 pm

    64. I see. Thank you for the perspective. This was the first time I’ve seen, in person, Higgins’ serve and TMO’s new era serving.

  69. cocobean October 25, 2014 11:36 pm

wildcard (tossup, blulite). Jump setting is a quicker way to run your offense. It’s not necessary all the time but it a good skill to have.
BTW. If you win the coin toss for the 5th set. VB101 says to receive. Easier to side out than to score a natural point. It takes a strong mind to serve as aggressively in the 5th than in other sets. Plus you add in the fatigue factor for jump servers.

  70. wildcarf October 26, 2014 12:54 am

    69. blulite isnt me and tossup does not exist anymore.

the discussion was referring to winning the coin toss for the opening set. does vb101 say to receive too?

i would try to ignore vb101 sometime for the coin toss for the 5th set particularly if you have the right setup. 5th set being the deciding set is all or nothing do or die, especially if you came from behind now its the time to attack. you may need a good steady consistent server and even a leader that takes command ie adolpho (or it could be simplicity such as big player + standing float). her standing float plus she pulls something back like its kind of i describe bolt action has a nice arc and trajectory and lands near the center of the court (especially useful if your opponent is caught playing campfire defense since it drops). whatever it is, her serve was sound and she played like a boss. even gave a smack down at the net.
