UCSB 3, Hawaii 1 3-29

Same lineup for the Warriors, Cheape is the floor captain

Not sure if they showed it at home but Cheape sang the national anthem and played guitar.

Gauchos on a 4-0 run, the last two points on aces. TO UH. UCSB up 10-5. Gauchos one of the few teams that uses a modified slide. Rare in the men’s game
    UH Hitton .200, 4-2-10, UCSB 385 6-1-13.

  2. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:36 pm

UH serving tough(Marks) and playing great defense. comes back with a 5-0 run, closes to 12-10. TO UCSB.

  3. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:38 pm

Zarkovic with a solo, although they gave the assist to Holt. 12-11 Zarkovic with a solo. ties it at 12

  4. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:40 pm

Marks seems to have found his game. Serving well and hit the 3-meter attack. UH middles continuing to play well. Averill with a bomb. Uh leads for the first time at 14-13

  5. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:41 pm

Holt with the service error and a kill by King gives UCSB the 15-14 lead at the TTO.

  6. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:42 pm

    Warriors hitting 9-3-20 .300, USCB 8-4-20 .200
    Sedore 2-1-4, Averill 2-0-4, Marks 2-1-3, Zarkovic 2-0-5, HOlt 1-1-3.

  7. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:45 pm

UH’s SEs are killing them. Zarkovic with one, gives UCSB the 18-16 lead. Marks with a sharp cut 18-17. Wechsung into serve.

  8. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:46 pm

Another service error (Wechsung) and Marks hits into the net. UCSB up 20-17. TO Warriors.

  9. warriorfan March 29, 2013 6:47 pm

Well pathetic serving is costing Uh this first set.

  10. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:51 pm

Sedore with the ace, brings the Warriors to within 23-22. TO UCSB

  11. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:54 pm

Gauchos with a near net-roll ace, Zarkovic with the kill 24-23.

  12. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:54 pm

Evans out of the back row ends it 25-23.

  13. volleyball fan March 29, 2013 6:55 pm

Agree with warriorfan this time. Bad serving did cost this set.

  14. warriorfan March 29, 2013 6:57 pm

Definitely need to not miss as many serves and figure out how to stop Evans, they are making him look like the player of the year.

  15. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 6:57 pm

Then you also agree with me (see No. 7)
    UH 15-4-31, sedore 2-18, Averill 2-0-4, Marks 4-2-6, Zarkovic 5-0-9, Holt 1-1-4. 1 aces, 5 SEs, 3 blocks, 6 digs
    UCSB 14-5-28, 2 aces, 2 SE, 0 blocks, 10 digs.

  16. warriorfan March 29, 2013 7:07 pm

okay Miles Evans is ridiculous, UH needs to key on him, he’s not this good usually.

  17. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:09 pm

If they can just keep the serve in … UH up 13-12.

  18. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:10 pm

UCSB hits long again, UH up 14-12. TO Gauchos. kind of surprised they didn’t wait for the TTO. UH 7-1-14, UCSB 7-2-16 in Set 2.

  19. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:12 pm

Averill with the service overpass. 15-12 at the TTO.

  20. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:17 pm

Think they tried to get too fancy with the X to Zarkovic, UCSB has tied it at 17. Marks hits wide. UCSB takes the 18-17 lead.

  21. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:19 pm

Sedore blocked. UCSB now up 20=18. TO UH.

  22. Alohilani March 29, 2013 7:20 pm

The difference between UH and all the other teams on the bubble is UH tries hard and they hit and serve the ball out. The other teams try just as hard and hit and serve the ball in. Their serving stinks to high heaven. Too much is made of their serves. Yes, occasionally their serves will win them a game but I think majority of the time, their serving has really stink to high heaven.

  23. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:22 pm

A couple of taps back into an open back court by the Gauchos off the block have UCSB up 22-19. TO UH.

  24. warriorfan March 29, 2013 7:23 pm

Can’t believe these service/hitting errors, I guess this team wants to stay home.

  25. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:25 pm

Gauchos continue to make the off plays. It’s 24-20

  26. warriorfan March 29, 2013 7:26 pm

It’s not just serving errors , their hitting percentage stinks as well and it has all year, they make too many errors.

    And the setting is predictable.

  27. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:27 pm

Evans ends it again. 25-21. another 5? they can only hope they can push it to that.

  28. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:29 pm

WF, they are hitting .328 for the match.

  29. jmy March 29, 2013 7:29 pm

How does the playoff situation look for UH? If they lose tonight, are they definitely out? I would imagine that a loss tonight would make the situation much bleaker…

  30. Alohilani March 29, 2013 7:29 pm

Don’t see them coming back down 0-2. After all this is not USC. It just seems UH doesn’t want to go to the playoffs as much. Oh well, next year.

  31. Roxy March 29, 2013 7:29 pm

Gauchos win set 2 using their back-up setter. He hasn’t seen the court since Feb. 15.

  32. volleyball fan March 29, 2013 7:30 pm

Warriorfan, you are right again. Subconsciously this team wants to stay home and not be sent to the lion’s den at BYU for the playoffs. I don’t envy UCSB. They want it more, so let them go to BYU instead and get smashed up there. At least they don’t have to travel as far as Hawaii. Like I said, I’m not sorry that Hawaii won’t make the playoffs. This is not their year. I’d rather they make the playoffs next year in a higher position than #7 so they won’t get chopped down by BYU on the first round. No doubt BYU will be even stronger next year and easily #1 again.

  33. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:32 pm

    Set 2 UH 12-4-27 0 aces, 5 SEs. 1 block, 7 digs
    UCSB 14-3-25, 1 aces, 6 SEs, 2.5 blocks, 9 digs
2 sets combined. Sedore 6-2-15, Averill 5-0-7 (feed the middle), Marks 6-3-11, Zarkovic 8-2-19, Holt 2-1-6
For ucsb, Evans 12-2-19. Kingi 5-1-9, Davis 5-1-7, Licht 4-3-13

  34. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:36 pm

JMY, they definitely need to get a split (if they lose tonight)
A win tonight puts UCSB at 9-10, tied for 7th
    8 teams go
with a loss UH goes to 8-13.
USC, UCSD and UOP have No chance of getting in
Warriors have 3 matches left after tonight, UCSB tomorrow and at UCSD twice two weeks from now.
Gauchos finish out at Cal Baptist, hosting BYU, USC, Pepperdine.

  35. warriorfan March 29, 2013 7:38 pm

It just seemed like they made a lot of hitting errors late in set 2, crucial errors. Granted they were on bad sets.

  36. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:47 pm

BYU 17-2, clinched, host SC, finish with 4 on road: at UCSB, UCLA, UOP and Stanford
UCI 14-5, clinched, home the rest of the way, UCLA, UCSD, Stanford, Pacific, CSUN
Beach 14-6, clinched, at Stanfird, USC, Pepperdine, Host CSUN
UCLA 11-7, at UCI, home with Cal Baptist, BYU, Pepperdine, USC
Pepperdine 11-7, at Cal Baptist, host CSUN, Beach, at UCLA and UCSB
Stanford 9-9 host Beach, at UOP, UCI, UCSD, host Cal Baptist and BYU has tiebreak on UH on points
CSUN 9-10, on the road rest of way, UOP, Pepperdine, USC, UCI, Beach but have tiebreak on UH
    UCSB currently 8-10
    UH currently 8-12

  37. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:47 pm

Set 3 UH up 10-6, playing well in transition. Kanetake in at L

  38. setaone March 29, 2013 7:49 pm

Cindy what is the name of the men’s vb trainer?

  39. Alohilani March 29, 2013 7:50 pm

In order for them to go far, you have to have Siki, Sedore and Marks ALL play well on the same night.

  40. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:50 pm

West in, he’s 2=0=2. UH up 13-7. TO UCSB

  41. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 7:52 pm

Sedore with his 10th kill puts the Warriors up 15-8 at the TTO.

  42. warriorfan March 29, 2013 7:54 pm

    39. I don’t think you can count on Marks offensively, he’s just not a good hitter. He’s having a great night tonight though.

    West should be starting.

  43. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:01 pm

    Uh was up 19-11. It’s now 21-16.

  44. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:02 pm

Sedore with his 11th, UH serving for the set at 24-16

  45. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:04 pm

Evans tips wide. UH wins 25-18

  46. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:07 pm

    Set 3 UH 13-4-31, 3.5 blocks, 2 aces, 5 SEs, 17 digs
    UCSB 9-5-33, 2 blocks, 0 aces, 4 SEs, 11 digs
    Set 3 totals. Sedore 11-3-27, AVerill 5-1-9 (was 0-1-2 Set 3), Marks 9-3-16, Zarkovic 11-3-26, West 2-1-4, Holt 2-1-6
West starting Set 4.And Kanetake at Libero

  47. jmy March 29, 2013 8:11 pm

Is UH catching fire or is UCSB coming back down to earth?

  48. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:12 pm

In case you’re wondering, 1-4 in 5 setters
    Hawaii is 6-7

  49. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:16 pm

Never thought UCSB was playing that well. Just that UH was playing worse. Kanetake has done a nice job at settling down the passing. UCSB ace ties it at 8

  50. Cubicle1126 March 29, 2013 8:17 pm

Warriors started playing better when I started watching at set 3 🙂

Let’s see if they can keep it up …

  51. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:18 pm

UCSB takes the 10-8 lead on a bad set by Ramos that got tapped back. TO Warriors

  52. jmy March 29, 2013 8:18 pm

On TV it sure looked like SB was playing well…

  53. warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:18 pm

Ugh Wayne Lee is so blind, makes terrible calls all the time.

  54. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:19 pm

Is interesting tho, that Warriors started playing better just as the Wahine were winning in 10 (Keiki Carlos with her second home run of the game, a walk-off wins it, and baseball beats the Gauchos 6-2 after losing that tough one last night.

  55. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:21 pm

West has made a difference as well. 3-1-7, West serving It’s 11-11

  56. warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:22 pm

Not hating, but ramos makes too many location mistakes.

I hope the freshmen Franciskovic is a good one.

  57. vlimafan March 29, 2013 8:22 pm

I don’t think the Warriors want to stay home and not be in the playoffs. I think it’s the opposite: they are feeling that pressure to get to the playoffs and maybe bc of that they’re playing tight. If they wanted to stay home, we wouldn’t have seen JP Marks running into his teammates to get to that ball, and Sedore jumping over that table (at set pt in set 2)

In the first 2 sets they hit for a good percentage, a lil less than UCSB. They also trailed in digging but not by much. It’s their serving that’s killing them, as well as their passing. I think they’re forcing/trying too much behind the service line. Not to mention UCSB is a pretty good team. Fortunately, the Warriors’ serving game was a bit better in set 3… A bit.

Btw Kanetake is doing a good job esp in serve receive.

C’mon Warriors! You can do this… Just please keep your service error to a minimum.

  58. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:23 pm

Averill with a soft return of the overpass gives UH the 15-12 lead at the TTO.

  59. warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:25 pm

Averill is becoming my fave player, he’s a middle that can literally do it all. Wish all middles for UH were like him.

  60. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:30 pm

Marks with his 12th, gives UH the 20-16 lead. TO UCSB

  61. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:33 pm

Sedore went line, just wide. It’s 20-18. TO Warriors.

  62. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:35 pm

They need to settle down if they’re going to pull this one out. Marks line on the right, wide. Kingi with a net roll ace ties it at 20.

  63. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:36 pm

Out of system off a bad set by Zarkovic, Sedore hits wide. UCSB a 21-20 lead. Gauchos service error ties it at 21.

  64. warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:36 pm

    damn they are choking.

  65. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:37 pm

hmmm, just when you thought it would go 5 … Sedore stuffed. 23-21

  66. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:38 pm

Gauchos win 25-22. I’d like to see that dig again. Looked like it landed in.

  67. Cubicle1126 March 29, 2013 8:39 pm

    damn.

hawaii had this set. but that’s been the story of the season.

  68. volleyball fan March 29, 2013 8:41 pm

No, it did land outside according to the replay. Well, let’s hope that UH can win on senior night and go out on a win.

  69. Warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:45 pm

I just don’t see this team going 3-0 the rest of the way. they have done nothing (except the ucla win) on the road this year and UCSD always gets up for matches against UH.

I am ready for a new head coach. I like Wade and wouldn’t mind having him back on the wahine staff as an assistant though.

  70. vlimafan March 29, 2013 8:45 pm

    (#65) Cindy,

Yep, I really thought there was going to be a 5th game too. I think UCSB smelled victory once they got the momentum at the end. They seemed to have come alive big time. We’ll see how this will affect the Warriors tomorrow. Hopefully they’ll come out with a win.

  71. Warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:47 pm

    71. UH just made crucial hitting errors late (again) mostly on tight sets (again)
I don’t think UCSB did anything special.

  72. volleyball fan March 29, 2013 8:51 pm

Warriorfan, if you still read this, whom would you like to see as the men’s head coach? And how could he become women’s assistant coach again? The roster is full there.

  73. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:52 pm

WF. agree, crucial hitting errors again late. Don’t think the sets were all that bad. both times Warriors went line and went wide.
And thanks VBF for letting me know how the replay was. They didn’t show it in the arena.
As for Wade going back to the Wahine … not going to happen.

  74. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 8:52 pm

going to start a new thread with stats. will have it up in a bit

  75. Warriorfan March 29, 2013 8:54 pm

Well not for next season, obviously but in the future.

New head coach, I say former warrior great Mark Presho for now.

  76. vlimafan March 29, 2013 9:00 pm

    (#71) Warriorfan,

Yeahhhh, I agree… Those hitting errors in the end… Oooh. Ouch. It still hurts inside. lol.

As for the setting, I am a fan of Ramos but I do agree that a lot of his sets were so tight and close to the net. I hope he has a much better performance tomorrow. Go Joby! 🙂

  77. volleyball fan March 29, 2013 9:01 pm

In reply to 73 and 75: If Charlie Wade has one more year on the contract, let him finish it out. If next year he can lead his team to the playoffs, let him keep his job. If he fails again and Shoji retires next year, a spot may open up for him (Wade) to get the assistant coach job again. Even though it’s a demotion, at least he could stay in Hawaii. Hope for the best.

  78. Cindy Luis March 29, 2013 9:21 pm

Wade has a year left, they aren’t going to buy him out.
He will not be back as a Wahine assistant.
And I don’t know if Presho’s family situation has changed. He pulled out of consideration the last time because of wanting to stay in California near his kids after a divorce.
