It was a fun trip out to the space center. I tried to beat the buses back because there were problems with the hotel elevators this morning. One of the trainers was stuck for a bit, or so they say.

The know it all in me at times can’t resist to post my OPINIONS here. I try try to convey that I know these are just my opinions based on how I interpret what I see going on with the program. I try to keep my criticisms objective and not let my frustrations taint what I post.
This is how you should take my long winded posts. It’s like when you and your Hubby is watching the UH of your wide screen high def. The team is struggling to score TDs. At some point your Hubby will comment to you…”Chow should do…….” You should take my posts in that vein.

Many times, I have had to keep hubby from throwing his rubber slippah at the TV.
Anyway, we are UH alumni and we are still loyal to our team.
I wish so many of us weren’t fair weather fans.
In fact, hubby used to belong to the UH band and played his clarinet at all of the UH games in Aloha Stadium.
He did that at Roosevelt High games, too. That’s why he knows the Alma Mater and I don’t.

Today compared to several years ago, fans have access to a lot more information and video on teams and have more understanding of offenses than they did in the old days. Now a football fan is as knowledgeable as say a baseball fan is about strategy. And we can make simple comparisons between our offense, other offenses that perform better, and our offenses during previous coaches. We have access to statistics. We can see computer simulations, and we can use simulations to test offenses and defenses.
That is a long way from being even a tenth of a real offensive coordinator, but fans do have far more understanding behind their opinions than you might expect. A good example, is volleyball, where the average level of fan knowledge is much greater than in places where volleyball is not played so much at the club level.

15… They have been rolling him out, but he’s taking too long to pull the trigger and when he does, can’t hit the target.
You cannot expect to win a lot of games in today’s game if you don’t have a quality QB. PERIOD. END OF STORY. If your QB is not reliable, your punter will get a lot of playing time. UH could have Chip Kelly or June Jones as OC right now and their offense struggle also because the QB isn’t making the plays.
Look at USC last year, they had horrible QB play last year and barely made a bowl game, which is the USC equivalent to a 2 or 3 win UH team in their expectations.
Look at the struggles Fresno & San Jose St have had this year now that they have QB issues. Fresno only has wins over FCS member So. Utah, and a terrible UNM team. Fresno has been non-competitive vs quality teams. SJSU has only beaten FCS member North Dakota (not to be confused with FCS power N. Dakota St.). The QB threw a pick 6 put the game out of reach vs Nevada.
If not for an experienced Cody Fajardo, Nevada would likely be 1-3. Boise St has taken big steps backward on offense ever since Kellen Moore graduated. IMO Hedrick stinks.
Looking at the Top 25, there isn’t a single average or below average QB. They are all good to excellent. Some aren’t spectacular, but they keep the chains moving.

The UH QBs all know they need to play better and I have confidence they will get better. My 2 cents as arm chair OC is that UH needs more quick passes, 3 and 5 step dropbacks. The idea is to reduce the amount of time the QB holds the ball. Woosley’s biggest issue is that he seems to get happy-feet once he has the ball over 2.5 seconds, even when not under pressure. The longer he holds the ball the less accurate he gets because his feet aren’t set and shoulders don’t get square. As much as I like to watch QBs that are able to make reads and go through progressions quickly, that’s just not a viable option right now, so UH has to go to dink and dunk routes even if its only 3-7 yard gains. At this point its asking way too much for our inexperienced WRs to read zones and sit in the holes AND have the QB read and find the targets.

I picked Hawaii to win in three of their games and was wrong every time, but close on the points. This game, though, is hard for me. Either team could win this one without any big surprises. If we can control Rice’s offense and drop them from 35 points per game to 14, and we can jack the offense enough to score two TD’s and a field goal, we can win a defensive struggle. If however, Rice moves the ball and scores– even if below their average– then that would be a good defensive effort, but not enough for our offense to win the game. To boil it down– defense plays lights out and special game, we can squeak out a win with special tams and offense.
Wondering when Harding is going to take off and run on 4th down? I haven’t tracked if there’s been room to run or if the opponent has guys there to cover Harding. I do know Harding has taken some hits. Which from what I’ve heard are legal hits as Harding leaves the “pocket”.
Also, did anybody else see the Arizona QB pooch punch a perfect roller downed at the Oregon 1?
Artie Wilson this morning predicting a UH loss. He sounded pretty negative. Responding to a caller’s question, Artie emphatically said that “June Jones is not a quitter.” He reported that Jones is enjoying life playing golf and taking it easy. Jones had been thinking of resigning over the summer, according to Wilson.
Just reporting what was heard this morning.
I always wonder how WRs for other teams find a way to be open or to get open, while our WRs seem to be covered most, if not all of the time. Is it lack of player skills or a failure on the coaching staff to find ways to get them open? I think it is the latter. And yes, Ikaika holds on to the ball waaaay toooo long. Sean Schroeder was like that his junior year, but was really improved his senior year. Ikaika is on the early part of his learning curve. The question is whether we can or should wait till he shows improvement. Tomorrow’s game will tell us a lot about where he now is on the learning curve.

I think most teams expect Harding could take off and run, so I doubt it would be very effective because you lose that element of surprise when Harding is punting. Maybe if he passes but I never seen Harding throw.

Yeah that’s a huge gamble that Chow I’m sure has been thinking about. It would be nice stick with Woolsey for his development, but of course like everyone knows they have to perform and win now. If they wait too long, there will be a new staff instead. My big fear is that if things don’t improve (knock on wood) and there is a change in staff, how much will that change recruiting? I mean the new staff could be great at recruiting, but will the current signees like Zwahlen, etc decide that they want to go elsewhere? Plus we don’t know what style the new coach would bring in and how long it would take for the players to buy in on that new system, and for them to get their own recruits in to fit that system.
31… Pretty sure the leash will be short for Woosley in the event he struggles again. Schroeder learned the hard way that he needed to get the ball out quicker as his OLine wasn’t protecting at all. This year’s OLine has been much better and has improved to the point where it’s not an issue.
Part of the WR corps issues are that 2 probable starters are out for the year (Haynes & Stubblefield). Not only 2 probably starters, but also two only true deep threats UH has on roster. Add the Kirkwood transfer right before the season and that’s essentially 3 starters/high playing time WRs gone.
I think the WR situation has been a bit exaggerated because of the QBs having issues finding them. There have been drops, but I don’t think there have been any more that any other given year. Still think the 2012 season was much worse in terms of dropped balls. Just seems worse this year because the WRs have had fewer catchable balls their direction or the QB doesn’t find the WR that has gotten open.
#26 FUHA … USC was 9-4 in regular season, which gave them some margin on bowl eligibility. They fired the HC after his loss to Arizona State, when they were at 3-2. Without Kiffin, they did a lot better, including defeating Stanford.

33… Bishop Gormon is the real deal. They’re really good and very well funded. I’ve been to their campus in Las Vegas and it’s pretty awesome for a prep school. Much better facilities than UH Football.

broken record. i repeat again tweak the formations and play calling before you change the QB. it is still my opinion that Graham wouldn’t find much success either running the O as it’s presently set up.
it is still my opinion that Chow should spend more energy OCing and less time HCing. He’s a proven OC and an unproven HC as his record indicates. He should help himself out as a HC by taking ownership over the offense, for this season at least. his game planning by committee is not working. he is the one person on staff that can actually fix the O. that should be his only focus for now. adminstrative duties be damned or delegated.
Hodad… In all fairness to JJ, I think his “resignation” was forced. The good ole boy network that put the money together to take him away from UH was getting tired of JJ’s lack of progress the past two years and there was some speculation he was going to be forced our after last season.
I think the SMU boosters were expecting a Conference Titles and BCS Bowl berth after JJ got SMU back to the bowls quickly and annihilating Kaepernick’s UNR (2009) and Derek Carr’s Fresno St (2012) teams. JJ never got them over 8 wins and recruiting has been not so good. 2013 was a major disappointment with a lot of upperclassmen and 2014 has seen the bottom drop out.
I think JJ was fired, and was in the same situation as Mac except JJ announced it a resignation and Mac as a retirement.
30, 37…..Artie Wilson is June Jones’s friend so it is no surprise that he defends him. Artie is not a journalist writing editorials he’s just a local figure with a sports show. But JJ did “quit” whether by his own volition or by the strong arm of others. I a not sure if this makes him a “quitter” or not. My theory is that he saw a train wreck of a season and didn’t want to be associated with it. If I was a player on that team I think I would feel as if he did quit on me. He gets to leave and play golf while his players have to suffer through an awful season without him. He would have been fired after such a season and who else would be interested in him. He’s smart guy and knows how the coaching game is played.
FUHA: agree with you that JJ is not a quitter. After that ASU situation where he announced a move and got the rug pulled out from under him, I’m sure the boosters had it in for him. Also must have been hard for him to recruit when he himself was not fully vested in the program. He was forced out.
Again, Artie Wilson was also very emphatic in saying that June Jones “was not fired or forced to resign.” Again, just reporting what was heard this morning on the radio. I’m not a SMU fan, but I feel for his players, as they’re just getting killed every week.

39… A head coach can’t fully commit to being a coordinator because of all the duties he has as a HC. There’s a ton of off-field activities, meetings, media appearances that all head coaches are contractually obligated to do.
The way the coaching structure works, the HC doesn’t actually coach fundamentals to the players, even to the groups that are his specialty. HCs are like CEO/COO of companies. The COO organizes and oversees the directors, the directors oversee the managers, and the managers are the ones to train and oversee the employees.
Steve Jobs told Apple he wanted to create the iPhone. The R&D developed the product. Component manufacturers delivered parts to Apple and the workers assembled the parts. Steve Jobs never managed/oversaw assembly and delivery to retail. Steve Jobs might walk through the facilities and engage in small talk, but he doesn’t deal with daily operations. As the CEO of Apple, his work time is devoted to running the company, not putting iPhones together.
Similar analogy could be made with the military also. Generals aren’t the ones training the privates in boot camp.

It’s a shame neither OC nor HT stream the UH-Rice game. Presume it’s a business model thing vs a technical limitation since OC did it a few years ago. Radio and blog posts are good and free though.
Why our receivers are not getting open is a good question. According to our receivers coach it is partly lack of speed and partly lack of technique for getting open. Part of it is the scheme– Our scheme is not built to get receivers open all over the field– we sacrifice some of this for our power running attack with Joey and Lakalaka. For example, we use three receivers and a big hybrid or Tight end as an extra blocker for Joey (the TE can come across the field and block). Typically, losing one receiver, and giving the defense only 3 receivers to cover instead of 4, can be made up for by passing to a receiver that is “hidden” as a blocker– so the blocking Hybrid or TE “sneaks” out as a receiver (but this has not worked). You also make up for using only 3 receivers by using play action to get them open instead of sending out four receivers. With 3 receivers and a TE or Hybrid, we show run and power, QB fakes a handoff, draws the defense away from one or more of the 3 receivers and that should get someone open.. The play action, and the sneaking out have not been used much and have not been successful. So defense keeps the advantage of covering 3 receivers with 4 or 5 defenders.
I remember the Oceanic pay-for-stream for basketball was lot better than it was for football games on my end. Now that its free the quality went down…but I suppose the reason for that is because there are more people watching taxes their servers.
Lucky for me, the Rice game is going to be televised in HD on the MyNetworkTV which is a public access channel.
Just a point of fact, Steve Jobs was famous for being a control freak. When he wanted to create the iPhone he told the R&D what he wanted on it and what not to include. How it should look, the materials it would be made of, the colors of the icons, DRM, the fonts… He was deeply involved in the development in all things Apple and has been known to have scrapped or delay a project for not meeting his standards (i.e. Apple Watch, AppleTV, iPhone, the first OSX, MacPro, etc.).
Copy and paste, iPad Mini, iPhone camera flash, CD drive, were few of the things he thought users of his products didn’t need, right or not. He also hardly ever engaged in small talk, he liked to challenge his developers and has been known to blow up on those that didn’t impress him. And He always took the position that his way was better. The reason people accepted his ego was that he was a proven winner. He came up with shinny versions of already existing products and told everyone to buy them because it was a status symbol and made you cool.
#49 … this looks like the first season with UH Athletics listing coaches for Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers. Maybe I put too much emphasis on titles, but the coach titles for 2012 & 2013 don’t seem to put much emphasis on a passing offense. Maybe that lack of coaching emphasis in years 1 & 2 is why the passing game appears to still be struggling in year 3.

Actually the reason why Apple is a success is because Jobs made his products USABLE. Look at the iPod: it has 1 button.
It’s not just about having a shiny product. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is bigger (iphone 6 still hasn’t caught up), and Android is more powerful.
But Apple has learned how to make fans, something that UH needs to do. We can talk about a weak economy, or a bad football team causing a drop in attendance. But that is not the ultimate reason.
Look at Apple: they sell $400+ smartphones with no problem, to the masses. UH wishes they could get 10% of the island to come to their football games.
Apple products are expensive, but they are USABLE. Look at all the things you can do with a smartphone. The UH football experience is not quite so expensive, but it’s a huge hassle. Remember the first game traffic problems? That wasn’t even a full stadium and Hawaii couldn’t handle that situation.
Hint UH football: Make your product something that people want. Don’t just rely on old-school fans who go to the games out of habit.
#46. I understand the duties of a head coach. What I’m saying is Chow hasn’t found a balance that other coaches have. To list a few college HCs that are/were De facto OCs. JJ, P. Johnson, C. Kelly, M.Leach, K Sumlin. These HCs made their bones as OCs and developed Os that were distinctly their own. They are HCs that still have ownership of their offenses.
Chow made his bones as an OC but has not kept a tight rein on his offense. I don’t know why. I’m guessing there’s an imbalance between his admin duties and what should be his primary objective of winning. ST mentioned that Chow game plans by committee. The committee is made up of one veteran RB coach, a 2nd year Oline coach, a 1st year WR coach and a 1st year QB coach. He said Chow scripts the first 12 plays and an alternate 12 plays depending on the situation. It is my opinion he should do more.

A football game at Aloha Stadium needs to be about more than just football. If you’re a UH football fan, this is the most important thing you need to realize: Just because you have a bad football team, does not mean you can’t draw people to the stadium.
Think about it, how often does UH have a good football team (I mean good as in able to get the less diehard fans to come to the stadium)? Maybe one every 10 years. Are you willing to draw poorly for 9 out of every 10 years? And then you’ll wonder why UH is bad.
Make a better football experience, and you’ll start seeing better QBs and WRs. If fans here are representative of Warrior Nation, then everyone is too caught up trying to diminish the symptoms of the disease, rather than curing the disease itself.
For the most part, aside from the iphone, steve jobs copied or ripped off all of his other technological ideas. However, Steve jobs was visionary in how he marketed his products. That’s why people flocked to the ipod even though there were better mp3 player choices out there and why the iphone still has a big marketshare even though there are other smartphone products and tablets that are superior to their apple counterparts.
It’s all about the marketing, and Steve Jobs was BRILLIANT at it.

4 Prong, I read some recent reviews by tech websites that say the Iphone6 and 6 Plus are the best of their category and better than the closest competitor in Samsung. Best design, fastest processing, best screens, best camera, best operating system, etc. I am certainly not a tech guy, but it looks like the Apple stuff is not only marketed well, but designed well too. Our office tech guys have some samsung phones, but they recommend only apple for use on our system (along with microsoft surface), and no Samsung or Android. I never understood the advantages or disadvantages, just stuck with apple given what works best for my business. There may be some technical advantages vs real world advantages of other phones over apple.
Boola: One thing to back up a close friend, but a true friend will call it like he/she sees it. I know from experience that the people whose opinions I really value may not always tell me things that I want to hear (sometimes I get huhu, too). I just hope that those SMU players can make it through the remainder of the season in one piece.

well i didn’t mean to say that apple makes CRAPPY products (aside from the iphone 6 having the ibend problem), just that they tend to make very expensive products (their laptops are a really good example) that don’t have as much bang for their buck, with other competitors having comparable or better products on the market. and the reason why people flock to them is the marketing and the apple branding.
as far as computer products for the business your’e at, those kind of technical solutions really depend on what the needs of the business are and the costs in integrating those solutions with the existing IT infrastructure. personally, i’m not a very big fan of apple products, because for phones, i like to be able to customize things and i don’t want to have to jailbreak my phone all the time or SSH into it to change my text ringtone. As far as their laptops go, i’m also not a fan because for a comparable PC, i could get the PC for much cheaper and have more functionality. i hate the ipad, though. the surface is much more functional for what i like to do with it.
but for phones, i’ve used both iphone and android products. i’m curious about the windows phone, though. it all depends on what your tech needs are.
Regarding the Warrior’s haka.
If a player can be penalized for bowing-like in a prayer gesture (like the Oregon player in last night’s Arizona game) then why should yelling, shouting , threatening and intimidation be tolerated in the form of the Warrior’s haka before the game?
The haka should be banned from the Warrior’s on the field pregame festivities .
If a throat slitting gesture by a player during the game results in a yellow flag then surely why isn’t the haka flagged during pregame.
People that argue for the haka are going to say it’s custom, tradition, belief. Fine.
People that argue against the performing of the haka are going to say why aren’t the rules enforced (the refs can surely penalize a team for this infraction before the start of the game)? See.
People that are neutral are going to ask if performing the haka tradition is nonsecular (school has to separate itself from religion, customs, traditions, spiritual). Hmm.
Personally I ask what does the performance of the haka do to the team, besides sapping the players strength, drawing the ire of the opponents and looking ridiculous. Furthermore, I cringe at seeing all the non poly’s on the Warriors being forced into doing the haka.
Football continues to clean it’s act. It looks to preserve an image of sportsmanship…no excessive celebration, no drawing attention to one selves, no personal message on the helmets and uniforms. This is all good. Footballs also needs to take a look at banning the performance of the haka by teams during pregame.

I base my opinion on Chow not having found a balance of being a head coach and keeping ownership of his offense first off by the results he’s achieved so far. And secondly by the success other offensive gurus have in being the head coach coaches while maintaining control over their offenses.
pollypicador: doing the haka is a 15 yard penalty if it’s done in the presence of the other team (june jones’ team was flagged for this several times in 2010, most notably san jose state game) . It’s not a penalty if they do it while the other team is not on the field.

Why would the team consume so much time with the haka. The team should go over plays, mental checklists, whatever. Why would the team stand in the middle of the field/center stage with their tongues sticking out and doing the throat slitting gesture. It looks ridiculous. It’s getting old. The team should concentrate, focus, prepare on the game instead of doing the haka.
pollypicador: idk. you’re making a values based argument. some people probably agree with you. other people probably thinks it looks cool. who knows? the players might enjoy doing it, it hypes them up, and makes the football team unique. builds comradery, esprit de corps, whatever. i don’t necessarily think that the haka makes the team LESS focused or prepared. I suspect even if they didn’t do the haka, the offense would still be terrible.

Utah State is a prime example of how a program can improve with support from their administration, aggressive fundraising, improved facilities, resulting in getting better athletes and coaches. Just 4 years ago USU was a downtrodden program. Their weight room today is double the size of UH’s at 21,000 sq feet.
