No.3 Stanford 3, Hawaii 2

Looking like another late arriving crowd. Maybe Punahou Carnival conflict?

UH starters tonight Ramos, Sedore, Averill, Marks, Zarkovic, Cheape and Holt.

On the Stanford bench, former Warrior Daniel Rasay. only local players for the Cardinal are ‘Iolani products Scott Sakaida, a 5-9 L who is starting, and Gabriel Vega, a 6-7 Fr. who appears to be redshirting.

Something I hadn’t seen any other team do. Stanford is swapping liberos every other sideout. The other libero is sophomore Grant Delgado.

  2. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:37 pm

Great ace by Averill, puts the Warriors up 11-8. sort of a drop float sinker very misplayed by the Cardinal. Holt with a solo stuff makes it 12-8. TO Stanford. UH hitting 417 to Stanford’s 188

  3. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:42 pm

Warriors up 15-11 at the TTO. Warriors hitting 418 8-1-6. Stanford 200. Warriors with 4 blocks. Serving tough again.

  4. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:46 pm

And just like that, Marks shanks a ball and it’s 15-15. TO UH.

  5. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:50 pm

can we say bad rotation? Zarkovic stuffed giving Stanford a 17-15 lead. a 6-0 run by the Cardinal.

  6. setaone February 1, 2013 6:53 pm

Does Stanford use Sakaida when receiving serve and Delgado when serving?

  7. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:54 pm

Stanford has steadied out. shaky ballhandling by the Warriors and a missed lift call by the ref. Cardinal up 21-19. TO UH

  8. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:56 pm

Averill on the overpass, pulls the Warriors to 22-20. TO Stanford.

  9. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:59 pm

Cook has taking over the match. 7-1-12, a couple of aces and 2 blocks. it’s 23-21.

  10. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 6:59 pm

Another block by UH, their fifth, makes it 23-22. Irvin with his fourth kill gives Stanford set point.

  11. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:02 pm

    Stanford wins it 25-23, Irvin’s fifth kill. he’s 5-0-8. UH finished hitting 161, Stanford 278. UH with 6 blocks, SU 3. Sedore 2-2-10, Averill 2-1-4, Marks 1-0-5, Zarkovic 2-2-8, Holt 3-0-3.

  12. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:03 pm

Stanford 2 aces, 5 SE. UH 1 ace, 2 SE. Think Hawaii gave that one away during that 6-0 run by Stanford. Warriors led 15-11 at the TTO.

  13. LC February 1, 2013 7:05 pm

Nebraska’s John Cook is in the stands. Guess he’s here on vacation, been tweeting photos all week and tweeting from the SSC tonight. Do you think he’s related to Brian Cook ?

  14. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:09 pm

Was thinking that Zarkovic needed to become more involved. He as 2-2-8 in Set 1. He’s 2-0-3 in Set 3. Tied at 4-4.

  15. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:12 pm

Refs letting STanford whine for way too long after Shaw called for backrow blocker on the over pass.

  16. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:17 pm

Marks with an ace on the back line. UH up 13-9. TO Stanford.

  17. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:18 pm

UH hitting 583 in Set 2, 8-1-12, Stanford .300 5-2-10. 2 blocks for the Warriors so far this set.

  18. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:21 pm

UH up 15-11 at the TTO. same score as Set 1. we’ll see if the Warriors can hold on this time.

  19. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:25 pm

Cook with another ace that froze Cheape, making it 17-14. Averill with his sixth kill gives UH a 18-14. lead.

  20. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:26 pm

Averill with the set to Sedore. it’s 19-14. TO Stanford.

  21. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:31 pm

Brian Cook is from Santa Cruz, Calif. His bio doesn’t say anything about a relation to John Cook. Brian’s sister Karissa is on the Stanford women’s team. Stanford setter James Shaw son of former Cardinal coach Don.

  22. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:34 pm

Cardinal have rallied to 22-20. TO UH. Shaw doing a nice job at giving his hitters some 1-on-1s. Carney not happy about the commit blocking, which is leaving the left side pretty open. At least that’s what it looked like Sean was saying to Wade and Hall.

  23. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:38 pm

Sarkovic got away with that one I think. Linesman called a touch on Zarkovic on the block but it got waved off. UH wins 25-22.

  24. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 7:39 pm

Wow that was almost an epic meltdown, glad they pulled it out.

  25. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 7:40 pm

I remember hearing that Karissa Cook and Lauren Cook were cousins. So I guess that makes Brian Cook, John Cook’s nephew.

  26. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:43 pm

    UH hit 273 in Set 2 to Stanford’s 241. Warriors 1 ace, 3 SEs, Cardinal 1 aces, 4 SE, Ramos with 10 of UH’s 22 digs (not good), Kneller with 12 of Stanford’s 27. Totals: Sedore 5-4-20, Averill 7-1-10, Marks 1-1-9, Zarkovic 6-3-18, Holt 5-1-6. Cook 13-3-25 for Stanford, Irvin 8-2-16. Kneller 3-3-12, Mochalski 2-3-6 (a bit of a surprise there).
    UH 9 blocks (3 in set 2), SU 6 blocks (3 in Set 2).

  27. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:47 pm

Thanks WF, just did some more research. although Stanford bio says nothing, found a story online that says Brian and Karissa’s cousin was Lauren. Which makes John Brian’s uncle.

  28. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:51 pm

Setaone, yes, although it wasn’t used as much in Set 2, Sakaida is the libero on serve-receive, Delgado when Stanford is serving.

  29. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:55 pm

More I look at Cook, see the family resemblance, particularly the hair line

  30. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 7:57 pm

Lift on Averill puts Stanford ahead at 8-6. Kneller with a kill and Marks hits wide. Stanford up 10-6. TO UH.

  31. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:01 pm

Averill without an attempt in this set. Stanford up 13-8.

  32. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:04 pm

For the third straight set, it’s 15-11 at the TTO. This time, Stanford leads. Stanford hitting .500 8-1-14, UH .200. 8-4-20.

  33. jmy February 1, 2013 8:06 pm

Watching the rebroadcast of BYU-Beach…Beach is impressive…Says a lot for UH that they almost beat the Beach at the Pyramid…

  34. why... February 1, 2013 8:07 pm

I cringe every time Holt serves. He has one of the easiest serves yet he’s so error prone.

  35. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:07 pm

Marks blocked on the service overpass by Shaw. Sedore with a kill. It’s 16-13.

  36. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 8:07 pm

don’t feel so confident with Jp struggling as much as he is.

  37. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:12 pm

Cook blocked to make it 20-17. TO Stanford.

  38. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:16 pm

Cook blocked again. 20-19. Timmer still serving. Averill finall with a real swing. ties it at 20- TO Stanford.

  39. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:20 pm

Zarkovic has kept his cool. His attempt should have been called down. then he got blocked and Stanford should have been yellow carded. Zarkovic with his 10th kills gives UH the 22-21 lead. Cardinal tie it only to have Cook’s service error give UH a 23-22 lead.

  40. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:21 pm

Marks with an angle that Stanford not happy about being called in. Zarkovic serving for the set at 24=22. Cook’s kill blocked back just long. UH up 24-23. Warriors call timeout.

  41. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:25 pm

nice dump shot by Ramos. UH up 26=25.

  42. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:27 pm

Stanford has held off seven set points. it’s now tied at 28 on Holt’s service erro.

  43. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:28 pm

Cook a bit of a punk. should be carded again. Stanford with its first set point at 29-28

  44. Alohilani February 1, 2013 8:29 pm

Don’t understand this. Holt has a simple serve yet has four service errors. Kind of erases all the blocks, doesn’t it.

  45. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:30 pm

Sedore with an ace that caught the back corner. good call by both the linesman and up ref. Think up really wants to card Cook. Made it 30-29. but Sedore with a net serve another tie. Zarkovic with his 12th kill. 31-30

  46. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:33 pm

Irvin gives Cardinal the set point at 32-31. Sedore takes off too early and hits into the net. Stanford wins 33-31. it’s 915.

  47. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:34 pm

It’s not like Wade is subbing a lot. nor is he using Holt for a 3-meter attack. kind of surprised there aren’t more serving subs.

  48. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:37 pm

    Hawaii Set 4. hit .235. Sedore 11-6-32, Averill 9-2-14, Marks 5-3-24, Zarkovic 12-6-32, Holt 6-2-9. Uh with 4 aces, 9 SEs. 2 aces and 4 SEs in Set 3. 37 digs, 12 by Ramos. 12.5 blocks.
Stanford hit .318. Kneller 7-5-23, Shaw 3-0-3 on dumps and UH has to respect that. Cook 15-5-35, Irvin 17-4-27. 11 blocks. UH was outblocked 6-3.5.

  49. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 8:43 pm

UH needs to win this , come on stanford is turning me off big time.. not the classy guys from a few years ago..

  50. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:45 pm

That is a really bad call. They call UH for a ball interference when the ball pushed the net into one of the Warriors. Sedore with an ace makes it 7-4. Marks with a kill, it’s 8-4. TO Stanford.

  51. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:48 pm

Agree with you WF. Stanford’s attitude very surprising. Sedore with three straight aces. it’s 10-4

  52. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:50 pm

Ace by Zarkovic (did you catch his little signal after it dropped?) Cook hits the antenna. it’s 13-5. TO Stanford.

  53. Alohilani February 1, 2013 8:51 pm

Could it be that not having a Shoji brother and all the respect they bring to the game that now the Stanford guys can act very cocky?

  54. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 8:55 pm

I agree with that Alohilani but not just about one of the Shojis. Just the respect all the Hawaii kids have for the game with Lawson, McLachlin, etc on the team. Stanford was very humble. think they overdid the “worst to first’ when winning the NCAA title a few years. ago.
UH up 15-7 at the TTO.

  55. Alohilani February 1, 2013 8:58 pm

Sorry didn’t mean to exclude the other local boys.

  56. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:00 pm

Ace by Timmer makes it 19-10. it’s now 20-11. Sedore to serve.

  57. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:02 pm

Kill by Averill makes it 21-12. Stanford still whining there was no touch. New setter in for Stanford. Probably to give Shaw a rest and prepare for Set 5. It’s 21-14.

  58. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:04 pm

Warriors just can’t seem to keep a lead. Stanford with 4 straight. It’s 21-16. TO UH

  59. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:08 pm

Stanford has closed to 23-18. Olsen in for Marks. Olsen not wearing his knee brace from last week.

  60. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:09 pm

Stanford holding off 2 set points, have closed to 24-20.

  61. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:10 pm

Sedore ends it with his 14th kills. 25-20

  62. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:12 pm

well for the fifth time in six home matches, it’s going 5. UH is 2-3 in 5-setters, Stanford is 1-0, that was against Pacific.

  63. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:15 pm

    Set 4 UH hit 256, STanford 257. Sedore 14-6-39, Averill 12-2-20, Marks 10-7-39, Zarkovic 14-7-40.
for Stanford Irvin 23-4-37, Cook 17-7-43.
UH 9 aces, 11 SEs. Warriors had 5 aces, 2 SEs in Set 4. Stanford 3 aces, 13 SEs.

  64. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:20 pm

Think Wade waited too long to call a timeout. Stanford up 7-4. UH seemed to lose a bit of momentum with Sedore’s net serve that made it 6-4.

  65. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:22 pm

Stanford taking advantage of Ramos on the outside blocking. Irvine tools it off the block. it’s 8-4 at the changeover.

  66. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:24 pm

should have been a double contact by Stanford. not called. Marks with the kill makes it 9-5.

  67. volleyball fan February 1, 2013 9:27 pm

Hawaii can’t seem to come back once they fall behind. Only when they’re ahead, the fly ahead. They need to learn to make consecutive points during crunch time, not just when they’re ahead. They need more mental strength.

  68. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:28 pm

Irvin aces Zarkovic. it’s 13-8. TO UH.

  69. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:31 pm

Stanford wins it 15-9. Holt nets on the service overpass putback attempt.

  70. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 9:32 pm

That was really disappointing, the warriors showed no fight at all in the fifth, it was soo strange.

  71. Alohilani February 1, 2013 9:36 pm

The guys really didn’t play well all night. To me, it’s not really a surprising loss.

  72. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 9:39 pm

I really like Ramos defensively it’s like having a nother libero out there, , but Irvin just had it way to easy hitting against his block. I hope Max gets another shot , at 6′ 6 he won’t get tooled as much.

  73. Warriorfan February 1, 2013 9:41 pm

Agreed the outsides just weren’t terminating like the last match, but setting was not as strong either.
It really hurts because stanford is not a good road team and this was so winnable, that third set should have been won 🙁

  74. Cindy Luis February 1, 2013 9:54 pm

It was a very winnable match. they could have won it in 3 if they didn’t have those let downs, especially in Set 1.
Starting a new thread in a minute. But agree that they had no fight in Set 5.

  75. karmady February 2, 2013 9:44 am

They’ll make adjustments and get them tonight. Go Warriors!
