Now that “We Get ‘Em,” let’s feed ’em

The “We Get ‘Em” grassroots fundraising effort for University of Hawaii athletics is off to a fine start, with contributions coming in at wegetemhawaii.com to the tune of 46 donations for a total of $2,406 after less than one day.

It is a noble effort, spearheaded by honest, ardent UH supporters like Chris Hart, Don Murphy, Raymond Noh, Kurt Osaki, and “Mike from Waimanalo.”

But to keep the momentum going, the organizers of the “UH People’s Athletic Fund” and athletic director Ben Jay would be well-served to earmark the funds for something specific.

My suggestion is food.

With new NCAA rules allowing for expanded training tables for all sports, UH has been trying to figure out how to fund more meals for the student-athletes.

Proceeds from last month’s Pigskin Pigout at Murphy’s Bar & Grill are going toward the football training table, but the more the better, for all sports.

Instead of “drops in the bucket” to offset what many believe is an unfair on-paper debt of $3 million, fans are more likely to give and keep giving if it is for something tangible — and what is more real than nourishing the young athletes? … Especially in our Hawaii culture, where feeding our ‘ohana goes without being said.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Dave Reardon, earmark it and be transparent. Food is a step in the right direction, if I remember correctly, Stephen Tsai mentioned that Ben Jay had an initiative to raise $300 to pay for meals of athletes after their practices and games, but no mention if the money was raised, and which teams would benefit from his initiative.

Giving or donating money to a “black hole” to cover anticipated losses won’t drive me to reach for my check book, I’d rather donate to a specific sport like softball where I know that the money will be well spent to cover budget shortfalls for a non revenue sport.

the “we get em” webpage has incorrect information. to donate, it says to “click on donate above”. there isn’t any “donate” above.
