Continuing on from the last thread’s topic.
I know sand volleyball is trying hard to grow nationally, but I hope this school limitations by region for the championships doesn’t go on forever. How many years has 2 MPSF teams been denied a final four berth as one of the true top 4 teams in the county? About 10-15 years ago, that was not uncommon for Hawaii. Often the MPSF final 4 was tougher than the NCAA final 4. Regarding the interest of ‘growing the sport’ by awarding automatic spots to the Midwest and East, does the NCAA do likewise for East top-heavy sports, like say, lacrosse? Or is the tendency to “even things out” only skewed toward the East?
This is how the AVCA has set it up. there were fewer than 40 schools the first year. We’ll see what happens when the NCAA takes over in 2016.
women’s volleyball was very much a ‘regionalized’ sport back in the 80s and early 90s. All you have to do is remember how the PCAA/Big West with Hawaii and UOP were probably the best two teams for several years but only one got to go to the final four. and Hawaii went to the final four in 82 and 83 as an independent. you’ll never see that happen again.
as for the men’s volleyball, the expansion to 12 teams this year is a step in the right direction.

regarding lacrosse (men), not a lot of schools offer it on the west coast so the NCAA Tournament is skewed to the east. looking at this year’s tournament bracket, Denver is the only ‘west’ school in the 16 team field.
Women’s LAX also at 16 teams. There is only one conference from the West, that being the MPSF, pretty much the dumping ground for other west conferences who can’t be bothered to sponsor their own league such as the Pac-12 for certain sports.

Has the AVCA increased the number of participants in their Sand Championships since the first year, seeing that the number of teams available has increased.
3. no, same format for the third year. 6 teams. 12 at large pairs in addition to the 2 each from the participating 6 teams.
there may have been an increase in teams but it’s still pretty young. and not all the schools that added it seem fully committed to it, IMHO. Some seemed to be using it as alternative spring training for their indoor team.
Thanks Cindy. And yes, there does seem to be quite a bit using it as a way to get more training hours for the indoor team.
So is the “40 Participating Institution” rule to become NCAA eligible sport a black/white deal? Or does the NCAA have some discretion? For example, if the NCAA determines that 10 schools is just using it to supplement indoor training, so the real number of schools is 35, can the NCAA say no?
I don’t think schools are trying to back door their way into the sport. but some schools are taking it slowly. Case in point: UCLA. didn’t offer it initially because they wanted to see how it would go and would it be viable. The issue at this point is scholarship money. I don’t think that there is any differentiation between ‘real’ and not. The NCAA has said it will sponsor the sport if it has at least 40 teams for at least two years. so there are over 40 now and there should be even more than that in 2016 when it’s supposed to be a sponsored sport.
Today begins the new NLI period that runs to Aug 1st. Do we have anyone signing during this period ?
In sand there has been some talk between certain players on social media. Notre Dame senior Sammie Brown ( not Sam Brown her teammate ) announced that she is pursuing her masters at UH and committed to play for the SandBows.
Another reported exchange ( I didn’t actually see this one and didn’t go looking ) between Germany’s Lara Schreiber and a Hawai`i recruit talking about playing for UH.
Transfer Olivia Magill won’t be here until the fall so it may be a while before they officially announce her.

Magill won’t be announced because she isn’t signing an NLI. Likely it comes out before they start practice as a team prospectus.
