The Bet

Here’s the deal: Leilehua and Kahuku meet in tomorrow’s playoffs.

The Warriors who attended those schools have a bet. The alumni from the losing team must wear a T-shirt representing the winning school.

“I’ve got Leilehua shirts for all of them,” said quarterback Bryant Moniz, a Leilehua graduate.

Safety Aulola Tonga, a Kahuku graduate, said: “I’ve got a red Kahuku shirt for Moniz. It has the years of our state championships.”

Game on.

Assistant coach Chris Tormey is in New York attending the funeral of his sister. Tormey left yesterday, but vowed to be back for tomorrow’s afternoon walk-through. Head coach Greg McMackin told Tormey to take as much time off as he wished, and that he did not have to return for Saturday’s game against Utah State. But Tormey decided to make the quick turnaround. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

* * * * *

• Richard Torres did some light workouts. He’s recovering from a pulled left hamstring. He believes he will be ready by Saturday.

• Kenny Estes has been playing a lot of free safety in place of Torres. Strong safety Spencer Smith has been at nickelback, and Mana Silva moved from free safety to strong safety.

Despite the Warriors’ struggles this year, NFL scouts remain interested in center John Estes, left tackle Aaron Kia, defensive end Fetaiagogo Fonoti and linebacker Blaze Soares.

Earlier in the year, there was strong interest in right tackle Laupepa Letuli. But he has not played in more than a month because of a knee injury. He has skills and the build to earn a look, but unfortunately, there just isn’t a lot of game video of him.

    Morning gang.
Speaking of the draft, while watching the last Monday night NFL game, I was having flashbacks of Nasti Ilaoa resembling Atlanta’s RB, Turner. He is 5’10” and 245lbs. Bulldozing over anything in his way. I still have hopes of Nate returning and securing an NFL job.

I also have hopes that Hawaii can get back into the groove of another RB that can block and be a Moose with the ball in his hands.

  6. protector November 5, 2009 7:02 am

I totally agree that Estes & Fonoti are slam dunks. Blaze should be there too if he can stay healthy. I don’t get the interest in Aaron Kia.

Utah will be a knockdown, drag out, street fight. I think the Warriors are tired of all the chet. Time to show the fans that they can climb back into the driver’s seat.

Can’t wait to see them come HOME!

Best of luck to all the draftee hopefuls. Seeing Kia get a look would be especially sweet considering what some have said about him.

    whitey-san,
I agree with what you say, and it is truly sad how Hawai’i is losing more and more of its old flavor.

Chopsuiboy: Tonight’s game is General Admission so people can sit wherever. I didn’t see anyone from the blog last night except Kazz who sat a couple of rows below us during the first half. He must have hooked up with The Rest of the Boyz for the second half.

There’ll be a big crowd tonight, but I suspect that you’ll find some friendly faces behind the basket next to the UH band. Other folks are likely to be in the section above and below the concourse by Honolulu Advertiser sign bear the opposite basket. Still others prefer to sit behind the teams.

Off to work – another busy week during the day plus all the sports – softball, volleyball, men’s basketball, and football.

    Wahine Basketball Notes (11/04/2009)

The mood was one of eager anticipation. I got there real early and as the doors opened there was a steady stream of fans coming in. Notably there were about 20-30 of Coach Dana’s former C&C co-workers there with custom “Dana” shirts with a tapa print. No Mufi to be found though. Amongst the dozens and dozens of well-wishers there greeting our new coach one by one and presenting many leis you could see the cautious optimism with the team themselves. They showed pretty good perimeter shooting during the pregame warm-ups.

The game itself started out nicely. I’m a sucker for big entrances, or at least semi-lavish ones. The ENITRE cheerleading squad was there as opposed to a fraction of what they usually bring out for basketball and volleyball games and of course the UH pep band. The team ran out of the tunnel to Hawaii Five O, of course, greeted by an explosion of confetti in what could be easily interpreted as a “celebration” of a new era about to take place.

Then the game was on…and in an instant we won the tip off leading to an easy lay-up by Galdones, however, reality of the situation of where this team is in Xs and Os set in as HPU went on to score 9 unanswered points. Deficit was about 10 points or even 12 early on, but the Wahine battled back. I was eager to see Kuehu in action, but she cannot be anywhere near 100% or even 80%. The tiser mentioned she was coming of surgery and it appears to be her left knee as she had a brace on. This visibly effected her lateral movement on defense as HPUers were able to get the ball around her easily and it effected her jumping abilities as well. She didn’t score her first basket until the second half in which you could see her physically let out a “sigh” of relief.

The officiating was HORRIBLE, just as Midori, Slugger, and Powderpuff as they had to listen to me, Chawan, and Stretch flip out on several occasions.

The game was very physical though and the Wahine never backed down and never fell behind again in the game for more than 3 points or so, however, towards the last 6 minutes of the second half we gave up a 12 point lead. Honestly, a Jim Bolla coached team would have not survived this or survived the last second 3 pointer from HPU to send it to OT. That was a huge momentum killer, but this new coaching staff was able to keep the Wahine’s composure grounded when it mattered.

Clearly, Coach Dana and her staff will never let this team get down on themselves and to be sure Coach Dana isn’t all, “pats on the back”, she was very vocal and at times very stern on her players from the bench to be sure though, her words were that of serious instruction and not just for the sake of volume.

The turnovers continued to be an issue for the team as well as working consistently on rebounds. The perimeter shooting isn’t that bad and I’d guess it was around 55-58%.

Keisha Kaneoka remains the heart of the team. Breanna Arbuckle had a big game, she was pounded several times to no calls, but to be sure she played hard and was fouled out late the game. I would have liked to see more of Jennifer Hamilton, as she proved to be a very strong player to the basket last season, however, the player to keep an eye on this season as a pleasant surprise was Ayabe (forgive me as I cannot recall her first name). She was tenacious last night, maybe our best 1-1 defender behind Kanekoa.

Overall it was a very exciting game, more exciting that what the Hawaii coaches wanted, but the team is a team this year from what I saw. The team knows who they play for and they play for themselves and their coaches. This team is well on it’s way to making an identity for itself and that is EXACTLY what this program needed. I think the ability to comeback from an early deficit and to win OT after a back-breaking 3 pointer at the end of regulation by HPU shows the kind of mental foundation being built by our new coaching staff. As I said earlier, past seasons, we could have lost the game last night, very badly too as HPU brought out all the trimmings to get a win on OUR home court.

My immediate concern is the upcoming road swing for the team. I hope Coach Dana and the leaders on this team can get through this road trip well on the and off the court (they need to remain healthy and injured players need to get healthier). To get the WAC season rolling, they need to enter it at full strength.

  21. madeinhawaii November 5, 2009 9:15 am

    Kazz,

Under Bolla, I think getting to 73 would have counted as a moral victory and a morale booster.

  29. Kazz November 5, 2009 9:41 am

    Made,

Under Jim Bolla, as a player, I think just running out the tunnel and not wanting to drive a screwdriver in between my fingers would have been a moral victory and a morale booster.

    Stephen-

Thanks for the EXCELLENT piece on Aaron Kia in this morning’s Advertiser sports section. The guy deserves MUCH more respect than he’s been getting lately and its great that you give the correct side of the story. Look at all the schools that were interested in Kia out of high school. Yet he chose to be a Warrior! Our team can use more like him!

Do you think he’ll be looked at as a tackle or guard at the next level?

    kia is still a prospect.
    at 6’5″ 290 lbs
    long arms
good feet inspite of a bad knee
    tenacity

he has actually done well. compare the number of times that we are in pass protect mode and sacks given up. he’ll probably project as a right tackle at first.

he has the measurables and the intangibles. don’t let all of the penalties fool you or stop you from looking beyond the trees so you can enjoy the forest.

  37. Aw Business November 5, 2009 10:43 am

i think blaze needs to either trim down and get faster to play lb.

    or

bulk up and become a rush end.

so what happened to the notion of him getting a medical redshirt????

  39. al November 5, 2009 10:45 am

malcolm lane would have been one.
    wait till next year.

so if letuli sits the rest of the year, is he a candidate for medical redshirt?

  40. al November 5, 2009 10:47 am

we could have a formidable oline next year if letuli returns.
hansen, thomas, lefiti, leonard, ginlack, could make for a good oline.

    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20091105/BREAKING01/91105038/WAC+suspends+Hawaii-based+football+official+for+missing+call+on+replay+

Honolulu-based football replay official Mike Goshima will be suspended for one game, the Western Athletic Conference announced today.

In a statement to WAC media, commissioner Karl Benson said the action stems from a call in last week’s San Jose State-Boise State game that should have been reversed by replay.

  42. letsgowarriors November 5, 2009 11:04 am

i doubt letuli gets a 6th year. he redshirted his freshman year and he basically played the same amount of games as alexander this year.

  43. A-House November 5, 2009 11:19 am

    AiYah:

Wonder who would have been the beneficiary of the “call”?

I must have missed something on the suspension, but I have yet to see a “game time official” suspended for greater MISSED calls which occur within 5 yards of an official and for seemingly more serious infractions.
But, suspension for a “missed first down”? How critical was that call when San Jose got blown away by Boise St? WTH. Oh, forgot that the official is from Hawaii.

If Boise St moves to the MWC, I REALLY, REALLY hope that the MWC commissioner has a job for Benny.

  44. A-House November 5, 2009 11:24 am

Howzit Tsaikos… long time no post.

Re: 41 – haven’t seen the play in question but as a replay official, it has to be 100% conclusive to overturn the on-field call.

Speaking of NCAA replay officials… If EVERY play is supposed to be reviewed, why would any coach have to challenge a call?? shouldn’t play be stopped to review any “close” plays when there is doubt?? If a coach does challenge a play and it is overturned, doesn’t it show that the replay official didn’t do their job because they should have already caught the on-field error in their own review of every play??

  50. Garret November 5, 2009 11:39 am

More bowl slots might open up for the WAC because the MWC might not be able to fill all of their bowl spots. However, if the Humanitarian Bowl picks last from the MWC, then the WAC will not get an extra spot and will have to scramble to convince a team to play Idaho in Boise. The MWC has 5 bowl spots reserved for just 9 teams, and if TCU makes a BCS bowl then they would need 6 bowl-eligible teams to fill the spots…and it looks like only 4 of their teams are likely to be bowl eligible.

With only one month remaining in the season, three Mountain West Conference teams are already bowl-eligible, while five others are fighting to become bowl-eligible.

The Utes and Cougars could end up in the Las Vegas Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl, respectively, though the Utes have a shot to knock TCU off its perch on Nov. 14 when they travel to Fort Worth. If Utah upsets the Frogs, it would shake up the bowl picture considerably.

The MWC also has bowl agreements with the New Mexico Bowl, the Armed Forces Bowl and the Humanitarian Bowl, though the league may not have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill those commitments, particularly if TCU goes to the BCS.

  51. Garret November 5, 2009 11:41 am

UCF lost their $3 million contract with Adiddas because they let Michael Jordan’s sons wear Nikes in their first basketball game this season.

Marcus Jordan stuck to his guns and wore his father’s iconic Nike Air Jordans, a decision that has cost the University of Central Florida its six-year, $3 million exclusive contract with adidas.

  52. Garret November 5, 2009 11:41 am

Aside from wearing Nikes, Marcus Jordan didn’t do much in the game.

Jordan, a freshman, finished with one point, one assist and three steals.

Bess’ stats have really gone down since Miami’s starting QB was injured.

Miami Dolphins receiver Davone Bess established himself as a key rookie contributor last season by becoming the team’s ultimate hustler.

It transformed him from an undrafted rookie receiver from Hawaii into a starter, and eventually Chad Pennington’s go-to receiver by the end of the season.

Bess caught 17 passes for 140 yards in the first three games, but his production has slowed down drastically over the past four. Since Chad Henne’s taken over as the starting quarterback Bess hasn’t contributed more than 18 receiving yards in any of the past four games.

What’s worse is that the Dolphins’ slot receiver has had a fumbling problem over the past two weeks. He’s fumbled three times, but fortunately one never counted because the Jets didn’t review the play courtesy of a great rush job by the Dolphins.

  55. Garret November 5, 2009 11:50 am

This article points out that BSU is correct to worry that they could be left out of a BCS game if TCU doesn’t lose a game. The BCS bowl will choose 1 team from a list that includes BSU, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, or Penn State…BSU would get a much lower TV rating than those other teams.

If the rest of the season plays out as expected, the Broncos will forfeit the lone automatic BCS bid for high-ranking non-“Big Six” teams to TCU; assuming the SEC runner-up is assured of landing in one of the other three at-large slots, that potentially leaves Boise to fend for one of the other two against heavyweights USC, Notre Dame and the winner of Saturday’s Ohio State-Penn State showdown, any of which is capable of overcoming the Broncos’ advantage in the polls with guarantees of big ticket sales and TV ratings (and the WAC’s history with at-large opportunities suggest the bowls will go for the sure thing). If TCU keeps winning, even the highest ranking in school history won’t guarantee Boise a berth.

SteveM aboard the M/S Pride of America

    Thursday Nov. 5, 2009
    Nawiliwili Harbor

Feeling lazy and sleepy looking out over the harbor and the Ha’upo ridge with the Hule’ia Stream at it’s base and feeding into the harbor. I vote this the most beautiful harbor scene, edging out the majestic view of Hilo Bay from a 164′ tall cruise ship.

Rode a shuttle with mom to the Harbor mall shopping center and to show some new friends the access to the Kalapaki Bay beach via the Anchor Cove shopping center (location of JJ’s Broiler). Seeing JJ’s brought back memories of watching the UH 2007 season opener there–and the first class treatment this UH football fan received there. This was on the Pride of Hawaii circuit, which sailed Sunday through Sunday back then.

Upon return to the pier, mom immediately jumped on a K-Mart shuttle. At this rate, we will have more hand-carry weight than luggage and might need a porter to the parking lot Saturday morning.

    If this was a Tsai-ko Cruise…
Resting up for the night–or finally getting some rest, period 😐 Usual fuud, darts, drinks in the Gold Rush Saloon. By now,Addahknowsports would be in charge of safekeeping the darts and the karaoke equipment would be permanently set up with pride. in charge of the mics. 😆

    [the following is fiction]
A certain beer-in-bulk drinking Tsai-ko would be pleased to know that Ship Security came to his cabin to personally check on his well-being and to ascertain whether his roomkey/shipboard charge card was lost or stolen (red-flagged due to the high bar charges). Not so pleased to learn that Guest Services department now asks for a second credit card or mortgage to guarantee the tab. On the plus side, he is given free cruises as comps (think “high roller” in Vegas). [the preceding was fiction]

    letsgowarriors

the medical hardship can be used when a player participates in no more than three games. a sixth year may be granted if a player only participated or was eligible to play in 3 years and no more than 3 games in a fourth season. the typical redshirt year is excluded.

two good examples of this exemption are nate ilaoa and leonard peters.

at this juncture, it would behoove letuli to comeback physically able and raring to go next year. he will be on the radar and then scouts can watch him over a full season to ensure his health and the like.

oh btw. i thought i heard that hauoli jamora committed to byu. i am sure that anything is still possible. he has nfl potential. wouldn’t it be nice he stayed home and also dragged his friend schwenke along at the same time.

from what i have seen the five best dline guys that i have seen are:

    hauoli jamora
    charles tuaau
    beau yap
    kona schwenke
    calen friel

i also caught fonokalafi. he is brute strong and is a raw specimen. coach him up he could anchor the middle dline.

  75. letsgowarriors November 5, 2009 2:04 pm

still got chance on jamora. we gotta go hard after lagafuaina and jamora. and do our due diligence on the current verbals.

  76. kama krab November 5, 2009 2:13 pm

    Al #73,

It would definitely be great if we could get both Hauoli and Kona but it looks like we have a log jam worth of DE recruits already for 2010 so it might be hard to get them to commit because of this depth.

  77. kama krab November 5, 2009 2:23 pm

I will say this about the list stated in #74.

We already have Friel and Tuaau. We still have a chance at Hauoli. Kona is probably a solid to Byu but you never know and we have not heard very much about Beau. But to have 3 of the best d-linemen in the 2010 class will be very good for U.H. and will give very good depth for years to come.

  78. kama krab November 5, 2009 2:27 pm

    With regards to Lagafuaina,

I still think we have the inside track. I think we are the only school so far that he has set up a officail visit too.

I think that we will need to go after maybe one more DT and then we need to start focusing on the LB’s, CB’s, and Safety positions.

  79. kama krab November 5, 2009 2:41 pm

Oh and we need maybe two more for the offensive line and a running back.

  80. kama krab November 5, 2009 2:43 pm

    Eh on that thought,

Do we still have a chance at getting big John Cullen?

  81. al November 5, 2009 2:49 pm

i believe that kona and jamora will grow into nfl prospects at dtackle.

don’t forget we have london “bridges” sapolu committed. but will he play dtackle or switch to center like his pops?

that rb supposed to be coming to town next week. if we continue to run more like last week and throw some passes in flats to the rb get chance of landing him. in our favor is that he likes the fact that we have a strong poly community here.

  82. al November 5, 2009 2:54 pm

haven’t seen lagafuaina yet. but, i’ll take letsgo’s word that the kid is a stud.

aren’t we recruiting kekuewa and/or wave ryder?

what a natural for a wave ryder to stay in hawaii no?
then again he should have gone to kailua (surfriders) or waianae (searider) for high school.

while we talking warriors, i think we should take a long hard look at the diminutive, though tough running, ryan ho from kamehameha. he’ll end up in the championship game on tv i believe.

  83. al November 5, 2009 3:03 pm

kama…lagafuaina reportedly has offers from ucla, unlv, wash, wyoming, and i believe oregon st.

  84. kama krab November 5, 2009 3:09 pm

    Al #82,

I hope U.H. is looking at Wave Ryder. He looks like he’s got good size as a safety. Also I would like to see U.H. go strong for Marcus Umu, Jeremy Ioane, and maybe even Brain Suite.

Oh and of course Shaydon Akuna even though we probably might not have very much of a chance. But you never know because it looked like he was all ready to commit to Oregan State. He has already gone on his official and still no commit so we still might have a chance.

You never know so still gotta go hard for the best in the state.

  85. chawan_cut November 5, 2009 3:16 pm

    kekoa,
the balloons are not allowed at basketball games due to their classification as “Noise Makers” and not allowed by the WAC or NCAA. this came after complaints by other WAC teams to Mr Benson. he took action and warned UH that technical fouls would be called against the fans. UH did not want to risk this and thus there are no more balloons. and i believe that has led to a less than enthused student section.

  86. kama krab November 5, 2009 3:20 pm

    Al #83,

That is a pretty decent list of teams which are offering but I think U.H. is the place where Lagafuaina will commit to. I guess I just have a feeling.

  87. al November 5, 2009 3:34 pm

i would be concerned about umu’s 40 times.
i believe the sleeper of the bunch is brian suite unless he favors baseball as his college sport of choice.

and kama, i hope your feeling right.

  88. chopsueyboy November 5, 2009 3:43 pm

no balloons, it was fun to see the students waving them around…
I tried to get the band to play at men’s basketball games
“Aloha Oe” if a member of the other team fouled out
just trying to have some fun, all of us could wave and be
different from the na na na na, na na na na, he he he goodbye

it got shot down by the higher ups that it would be
    disrespectful to the Queen.

  89. kama krab November 5, 2009 3:46 pm

    Al #87,

If that is the case with Brian Suite, then maybe U.H. can offer him both sports and see what he does.

  90. al November 5, 2009 3:52 pm

if that should happen then it would be a football scholie since it is the major sport over baseball. so the scholie is with football. however, both coaches would need to agree with his playing both sports.

    oh well, just a dream.

  91. Stephen Tsai November 5, 2009 3:53 pm

Blaze Soares said the best QB in the state is the Castle guy.
    What do you guys think?

  92. Kekoa November 5, 2009 3:55 pm

I say take the technicals!…and stick a balloon in Benson’s Cauliflowah ear! We got plenny back up! Shoots!…Powderpuff can take him!

  93. Ralph November 5, 2009 3:56 pm

    Blaze is a homer.

  94. al November 5, 2009 4:05 pm

yah, that castle kid looks good. i like the way he gets rid of the ball quickly and decisvely.

  95. Da Punchbowl Kid November 5, 2009 4:12 pm

    Higgins?

  96. Da Punchbowl Kid November 5, 2009 4:12 pm

    Manley?

  97. Da Punchbowl Kid November 5, 2009 4:13 pm

    Bueller?
    Bueller…?

  98. Da Punchbowl Kid November 5, 2009 4:17 pm

Has Manley’s stock gone down any? There doesn’t seem to be as much buzz about him these days. He’s a terrific player.

He and Leileihua against Kahuku tomorrow night. Punahou vs Kamehameha tonight. Couple of big games, I think our D1 champs will one of those teams. Too bad the LIH doesn’t put regular season games on TV.

  99. Da Punchbowl Kid November 5, 2009 4:23 pm

I’ll be glued to the set tomorrow to watch Leileihua and Kahuku. Possibly the last time we see Manley.

IMHO, Kahuku’s Coach Torres is getting better and better in that program. Sure, he gets the players, but he works hard at developing student/athletes. He’s good for that program.

Well, I’ll stop talking to myself and go cook rice.

  100. Da Punchbowl Kid November 5, 2009 4:24 pm

    Okay before I go…. WUNHUNNERT!! 🙂

  101. kama krab November 5, 2009 4:42 pm

    DPK,

We will have a couple more chances to see young Manley develop since Leilehua is already in the states but I have a feeling that we might be seeing in the future also.

And yes it does seem that his stock has gone down. On Scout.com Manley went from a three star to a two star. Maybe they know something that we don’t. Could Manley be committed somewhere thus the drop in star rating. Heh don’t they also drop star rating when someone commits to Hawaii. Ah I think I’m just rambling but it would be nice to see much more from this young man because he has the heart and the will of a winner.

  102. kama krab November 5, 2009 4:46 pm

    Sorry,

But I gotta go with the Mules tomorrow. It will be one heck of a battle though with so much D-1 talent on the feild.

  103. kama krab November 5, 2009 4:49 pm

Speaking of Mules before I forget,

Someone has to get on the phone with Fraizer Taua (sp?). This boy has a major motor and causes alot of havoc in the back feild. The only thing I see wrong with him is his height. Besides that, this kid is a straight baller and will make someone very happy come LOI day.

TCU and Boise State are having great seasons.
Both are on course to run the table and finish the season undefeated. But, the BCS bias will may only allow one team to go BCS bowling. You have all heard the reasoning, week to week, Boise State’s SOS is not on par with the BCS conference teams. So for the second consecutive year, da donks look like a bridesmaid in waiting. Despite beating a very good Oregon team that demolished USC and has the star-power to finsh close to the top.
In order for BSU and TCU to be selected, there can only be 2 BCS conferences that will send 2 at-large teams. Meaning, 4 conferences would be restricted to their conference champs.

let’s look at the BCS roll call:

    SEC (2)–Florida, AlaB or LSU.
Best conference in college football. If rules permitted, an argument could be made to send these three teams BCS bowling, they lose only to their own kind.

Big Ten (2)–Iowa, Penn State. yep, JoePa’s kids must beat Ohio State so there only lost came at the hands of the hawkeyes…. the Buckeye’s loss to USC is OK, but Purdue–get a life. Ohio State is a no-show in the big SHOWs.

ACC (1)–Ga T c’mon, VT and Miami have 3 losses. there is no one else in the other divisions that wouldnt struggle with Navy.

Big East (1)–Cinn rules and is head-n-shouders above the rest…. once beaten Pitts will have 3 losses before seasons end–they have to play ND, WV and the mighty bearcats.

B12 (1)– The Longhorns will be unbeaten and go to Pasadena to play one of three SEC teams for the National Title, and Colt McCoy will have the distinction of out dueling two Heisman QBs in his career.
Oklahoma State is a pretender and it’s loss to Houston shuts the door on conversation–even with a loud Boone Pickens shout out.

Pac 10 (1). Oregon. Trojans losses to Washington and Oregon places Boise State ahead….they can afford a BCS snub it and will come back as usual to dominate in 2010.

(IND) ND. No way Jose. Irish played eight at home but must travel to Palo Alto and still have Pitts.

If this scenario plays out da donks are in w TCU and the WAC reaps a windfall. Possible?
maybe, but the odds are still better than Hawaii beating Navy at home……

  110. Kekoa November 5, 2009 6:11 pm

Sincere condolences to Coach Tormey and his ohana.

Prayers to my comrades at Ft. Hood, TX. Many have retired from active duty, settled in the area, and now work there in a civilian capacity.

    109- westsidesview:
I like how you broke that down! Let’s start are own BCS projections:

    Nat’l Championship: Florida vs Texas
    Rose Bowl: Oregon vs Iowa
    Orange: Cincy vs Georgia Tech
Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs Boise St
Fiesta Bowl: Penn St vs TCU

  113. RedZone November 5, 2009 7:33 pm

The best highschool qb I have seen this year has got to be Manley. He has just got sooo much better with less talent to support him. On defense those 2 DEs have really gotten better.

I also like that runningback from Waianae.

  114. al November 5, 2009 7:42 pm

i like the castle kid, but, i’ve known the higgins’ kid since he was wiping the hanabata from his nose.

    and manley is the mechanic.

yet, still, i think that the kahuku qb will be the knight in shining armor come friday night.

and not to mention that the kamehameha qb t.c. campbell calls me uncle.

hard to cheer for a favorite this year. just going to sit back and watch.

  115. Ralph November 5, 2009 8:43 pm

ESPN sportscenter showed highlights of the New Mexico vs BYU women soccer match..Don’t mess with the NM team, one took an elbow to the solar plexus early in the game, the rest of the game BYU took it to the body, every which way including a pull down by the pony tail. Futbol, lots of action but low scoring, got to watch it to enjoy it.

  121. al November 5, 2009 10:41 pm

    kamehameha 45-21.

okay so now i think tc campbell finally deserves some love. during the preseason and in to the early season three qb’s were rotating in each game. the offense stumbled and stuttered.

insert campbell and the ship was righted thereafter.

okay, it is in the genes as well, since, tc’s uncle is the one time chicago bears linebacker great gary campbell.

  122. al November 5, 2009 10:44 pm

all right so tc’s other uncle was a great athlete at kaimuki and his dad is not so bad either.

oh, and dial was the way to surf.

  124. al November 5, 2009 10:53 pm

and the rainbow warriors did beat byuh 89-63.
    that is huge.

big loss may be amis getting hurt. hopefully it is minor and was precautionary measure to take him out.

this win once again proves that there is a huge separation between d-1 and d-1aa.

flemings did not play and not sure about williams.

    good sign though.

  125. chawan_cut November 5, 2009 11:24 pm

wow. what a difference a week, and one player makes.
lay is the real deal. he made a 3/4 court pass to a streaking guy for the easy lay up. he also had a few no look zip passes for dunks.
i don’t remember the last time i’ve seen so many dunks by our big guys.
yes, amis got hurt and was in a boot. didn’t see how. hope its not too serious and he can be back next week. rod didn’t play but we didn’t need him.
sure BYU-H didn’t have their best big guy, but we didn’t have rod. our other guys stepped up. you could tell byu-h lives and dies by the 3. they had everyone setting up on the outside. their guards were quick though and fearless. driving into our big guys.
can’t wait to see what dwain williams will bring to the court.
artie said we had 29 turnovers. thats way too much. it did get sloppy at times. we also had a ton of non normal lineups with amis hurt.
lutu also played a complete game.
can’t wait to see this team fully healthy.
i was really worried about this game with the highly touted seasiders. we shut them down for most of the game until they started hitting their 3s in the 2nd half. we were up by 20 at one point.
hope bill’s injury isn’t too serious.
    and tonight’s news

    and time to sleep.

Re UH-BYUH game, it wasn’t a total rout for the whole game, BYUH actually cut the lead down to two in the second half, so I give them a lot of credit. BYUH was a very entertaining team to watch, lots of speed and intensity, but UH eventually wore them down. The BYUH fans that came out, probably a couple of busloads, made a lot more noise than the rest of the crowd most of the time. UH has a couple of things to work on – 29 turnovers and lots of missed free throws, but they show a lot of promise. And waving at chawan_cut – saw you with the famous orange windbreaker!

Corey Nielsen’s younger brother took over for him at QB in high school and is doing very well.

Casey Nielsen was just supposed to follow in the footsteps of his brother Corey, but instead has matched every stride to also become one of the top passers in the nation.

Nielsen comes into tonight’s pivotal San Gabriel Valley League game against defending champion and front-running Warren with 3,076 yards passing, 30 touchdowns and a QB rating of 128. Those impressive numbers make him the No. 1 passer in the state and sixth-best in the nation, according to Maxpreps.

“He inspired me to play football,” Nielsen said of Corey, with whom Casey speaks almost daily.

Westsideview, good post with the BCS outlook.
Boise should learn from UH playing in the Sugar Bowl that how much of a negative set up that can be with venue and playing an SEC team with their dominating fan support.
The Fiesta should be the strongest based bowl for them for recruiting and fan support.

Hey, What is Lily doing now? Does she still play ball? Is she living back here in the islands?

Here’s the 4 major problems we face against Navy which makes Niumatalolo’s homecoming a success:

    1. Agree, Bryant Moniz is the second coming of malasadas w braids….he can move the ball brilliantly into the redzone, but MAC & Co cant push it into the endzone.
Wildcat formation or not–they will find a way to screw it up. Redzone-meltdown. Third-Q no show.

    2. Warriors are starting to run on , but cant stop Navy’s run on D.
The midshipmen have the best OL, pound for pound in college football when they run, and our lethargic DL will be watching in freeze frame mode.

    3. Discipline. Annapolis cadets epitomize the word on the gridiron. Aaron Kia hasnt found its definition in five years.

    4. Niumatalolo v MAC.
Ken has found a trade, apprenticed and applies it like a journeyman.
Whatever MAC has learned over the years he lost along the way and has formed search committees to find it….some committee members are too young and others–too old.
This story is the same and has been told.

    Navy 34-17.

    see ya, whooosh!

Tomorrow, we face the first version of the Aggies @ home.
Next week, Aggies2 return to Aloha.
Version one is better. Despite being 2-6, and losing to their namesakes (3-6) on the road. They beat LaT and their last three losses (NMSU, NEV and FSU), have been by a total of 13 points and two of those losses were on the road.

Utah State has hops and play an exciting brand of college ball. They can light up the board and put up 30 in a hurry if you are sleep walking.
Another thing, these Aggies have learned to scrap and gave Utah, Texas A&M and BYU all they could handle while playing in their houses. Ok, their lights went out in the 4th quarter against the heavies, so if our warriors are to take these Logan gun slingers down, we better go toe-to-toe for four, match ’em point-4-point and win hand-to-hand in the final minutes.

Im not makin a prediction on this game just tellin our players a win is possible if they come to play hard. No rah rah s***t, just hard-nose football with intellect, focus and execution.
Stick to being vanilla and no MACnutz please.
This is one game we can….but it wont be any easier than the ones we didnt!

    best wishes….go warriors!

#151–quit pouting like a gurlie–not everyone sees the world through your rose-tinted prism. Look, its one thing to be unconscience during a game–and it’s another to blame your A.D.D. on the ref.
Like Lou Holtz says to his OL, if we wanted you to move on your count you would be calling the snaps.

    Chawan,

Thanks for the use of your mini megaphonw last night! I’m now thinking of buying those large ones the cheerleaders use… Wonder if they’ll let me bring that into the SSC?

  159. dittohead November 6, 2009 8:25 am

“Guess we’ve learned that some people at HPD have no pride in the home team”.

Isnt there a poster called Pride on this blog,
that predicts Hawaii will score 70 or more every game?
    What more can you ask?

  160. believer November 6, 2009 8:26 am

Mack has some horses comin in next year. Da continuity and one more year of experience for his young playahs, plus (cross fingahs) less injurys will mean a third straight bowl appearance.

  161. tattoo November 6, 2009 8:32 am

3 straight bowl appearances for MAC–dude, you just earned a free trip to my island…..and the koolaid maitais are on the house.

  165. Bubba November 6, 2009 8:45 am

Suite will not be offered a UH baseball schollie by Trap! He doesn’t even start for the Puns baseball team. Designated courtesy runner or pinch runner is all he does. Maybe this year he’ll get more reps on the field as Puns talent level will severely drop. No horses this year to carry on the tradition of the last 6 years!

  166. believer November 6, 2009 8:49 am

Da program is in good hands. great coachin, great recruitin, and great fans. Coach Mack luvs Hawaii and tank god won’t be goin anyplace else anytime soon. continuity is key.

  167. Jack Flash November 6, 2009 8:50 am

Looking forward to watching the Ohio St vs Penn St game this weekend. Big 10 champ implications. And of course, i’m really looking forward to a Warrior Win. See you all at the stadium!

  168. dittohead November 6, 2009 9:19 am

“Coach Mack luvs Hawaii and tank god won’t be goin anyplace else anytime soon”.

Doesnt MAC own a home in Vegas?

Beware of the pulver bird and the Hawaiian legacy of Papakolea.

  169. Kazz November 6, 2009 9:22 am

Homecoming week lookin’ good so far.

-The Wahine finally got a coach that is invested in the success of the program and actually gives a rip and won’t use the “they’re not my girls” attitude… especially on senior night… My God Bolla was a horrible person… 🙄

-The Bows got a decent showing against BYUH last night with some new guys getting the glory.

-Wahine Volleyball will continue to roll tonight.

-Wahine softball presents us with a very early preview of things to come. Hope they all remain healthy entering their 2010 spring season.

The story will continue to be written tomorrow night at Halawa…

RULE #808: YOU DON’T LOSE AT HOMECOMING!

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Lookin forward to a Warrior win tomorrow. Happy to see the other Warriors from KS clinching a championship last night. That made my football season! Now if we can only have the big boys win out and go to the bowl game, I couldn’t ask for more. 🙂

Who do you guys like in the big OIA game tonight? My first instinct is Kahuku, but Leileihua is capable too.

  175. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 6, 2009 10:32 am

Interesting to read the comments about the comments. Is it better to be hassled than ignored altogether?

My mid-afternoon meeting has been moved to tomorrow afternoon so I’ll be able to see the Wahine softball preview at 5 pm before the volleyball match at 7 pm.

Interesting crowd response by UH supporters at last night’s basketball game. Not much noise compared to BYUH fans except when dunks or three-pointers bumped the score up.

This post should bring up the new one.

  176. SteveM November 6, 2009 10:32 am

    Good morning everyone!

    > > > skip if not interested in Hawaii Cruising

SteveM aboard the M/S Pride of America

    Friday Nov. 6, 2009
Nawiliwili Harbor, departing 1400 for Na Pali Coast

This might be my last post from the ship, although I have a few internet minutes left. Lots to do–maybe the same stuff–eat, nap, eat, hot tub, eat, shows, but the time flies. Tonight add: “pack suitcase and put outside door for bag pull by midnight”.

Then the realization that this week long party has ended. 🙁
But this week, it moves to the land tomorrow at the tailgate! 🙂

    GO WARRIORS!

Mom has made friends on the ship (as usual) and has spent all week with an elderly couple and daughter. She wants us to take them to the airport for an afternoon flight and maybe take them to lunch first. Logistics pend, but if so, we will be very late to the tailgate, if we make it.

We depart Nawiliwili today at 1400 and cruise around the island to view the Na Pali Coast at around 1700. Captain plans to swing the ship 360º so the outside/balcony cabins on both sides of the ship can see the famous landmark beach with the hole in the rock. Then we usually continue around to pass between Kauai and Niihau near sunset. Sunset at sea sight is awesome if there are a few isolated clouds the sun can peek around.

Back at Pier 2 Honolulu Saturday. Disembarkation between 0815 and 1000. Your choice to some extent, but the luggage comes off the ship in color tagged lots and you pick them up in the terminal. Other arrangements can be made. I see that main dining and buffet is open for breakfast until 0900 (as usual) and even the pools and hot tubs until 1000…hmmm, I can see disembarking in swim shorts and slippahs…hey, this is Hawaii and we’re home….

    If this was a Tsai-ko Cruise…
On this particular cruise (with the land Tsai-ko tailgate on Saturday), we’ll have to get the early tailgate crew off the ship first. No problem provided someone will pick them up at Pier 2.

Upon further review, if LizKauai and KymryKauai were aboard, they should just take the bulk of her suitcase off the ship on Thursday or Friday and stay aboard for Na Pali Coast, the football game in Hono, and fly home as usual. If no game/event in Hono on Saturday, then optionally disembark Friday noon in Nawiliwili.
Tossup: cost of a flight versus Napali Coast and one more night aboard?

    GO WARRIORS!

  177. Jason November 6, 2009 10:37 am

Who cares about Kahuku and Leilehua, it’s all about Moanalua crushing ʻAiea. 😛

I read a great article from a R&S “guru” that really explains the mentality of a spread/R&S coach:

    http://smartfootball.com/dialogue/thoughts-on-the-spread-offense-hemlocks-comment

  178. westsidesview November 6, 2009 10:38 am

    “Trap Game du jour”

    good one, agree. lol.

Watch NW @ Iowa, 7am, espn.
The Hawkeyes always find a way to make it cardiaclike…..no matter who they play.

It’s like watching Casey Stengel’s Mets, except they win.

This team aint Cinderella, they are Peter Pan n Mary Poppins in helmet and pads.

If you believe in the Sound of Music you’ll be humming #4 goin on #1 all the way to Pasadena.
I starting singing when they were at #12.

The Hawks arent fantasy, but the results are strickly Disney.

Interesting that the geeks have Iowa placed at #1 and far higher than the humans in one of the three polls that makeup the BCS Standings, otherwise Boise State would be ahead of them.
For once the geeks are proving computers have an X factor, that humans dont.
Its simular to the Bermuda Triangle mystery.
Teams play Iowa and suddenly, they enigmatically lose.

Iowa has used all nine lives and have comeback in every way a Hollywood script writer would dare to create.
Last week they were behind an inspired Indiana team at half without a prayer. They won bc the wind shifted on Indiana in the second half.

Against MSU they marched down the field in 55 seconds and scored the winning TD on the last play of the game with a 8 yard catch on a blown coverage.

This team is fun to watch.

I turned them off and penciled in Penn State w a win at College Station–guess what?

    Trap door.
    You bet.
    But not what you expect.
The fleece is in thinking Iowa will be upset for 59 minutes and 59 seconds of the game. LOL!

  179. dittohead November 6, 2009 10:54 am

“Is it better to be hassled than ignored altogether?”

    You should be counseling Kia.

    Lol@Jason-

How’s the new teacher holding up?

  181. Jack Flash November 6, 2009 11:12 am

    westsidesview:
I’m pulling for Ohio St to beat Penn St to get the showdown at the ‘shoe next weekend. How many more miracles does Iowa have left? We shall see. Reminds me of us in 2007. Who do you like- Bama or LSU? I’m rooting Bama for no other reason than a BCS shakeup later on. What happens if Cincy and Iowa go undefeated, but still get left out of the Nat’l Championship in favor of Texas and Florida or Bama? LOL! All of a sudden, the BCS has to start screwing its OWN members. I would love to see that.

  182. Jason November 6, 2009 11:14 am

Got to sleep in for once. I appreciate the rest, although it comes at a hefty price. Later on I’m going to get some work done, then get ready to watch Moanalua take on ʻAiea. The campus is buzzing with Nā Menehune pride. All my students (especially the student-athletes) have been asking if I’m going to the game. 🙂

  183. tommui November 6, 2009 11:15 am

    JASON:

Before you were born, “Dutch” Meyers was running a spread formation at TCU except his spread really was almost sideline to sideline – and I mean really sideline to sideline. That also included very wide spreads in the O-line as well.

  184. Da Punchbowl Kid November 6, 2009 11:22 am

    Where’s the game at Jay?

  185. Derek November 6, 2009 11:36 am

    Some thoughts:
    1) If we beat the Aggies this week, we’ll have to beat the Aggies again next week!!!!! Huh!
    2) Derek Jeter is my favorite player. I cherish his rookie card. Yet, I was rooting for the Phillies because of Shane Victorino. Chase Utley is unreal too. Victorino will get a big raise in his contract. He’s either eligible for arbitration or will get a long term contract. Either way, he’s going to make a lot of money, and well earned too.
    3) Are Shoji and Sealy looking to recruit Taylor Akana, MOP of the recent State tournament? I think they should.
    4) If Idaho beats Fresno this week, they be in a bowl for sure, probably the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise. Nevada has the inside track for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. Boise St. is deserving for a BCS berth if they are undefeated. If not, maybe the Poinsetta Bowl. Hawaii? 1 million to 1 odds to win the last 5 games…which is to say, I don’t think so.
    5) When was the last time Hawaii was an underdog for 7 consecutive games? Just goes to show how far our team has fallen.

  186. westsidesview November 6, 2009 11:41 am

    JFlash,
    I like your thinking.
Agree, a Buckeye V over JoePa may knock out hopes for a dynamic BTen duo in the BCS Bowls and pave the way for da Donks. As I said, Ohio State’s loss to Purdue was a downer, even for the smugies @ Bristol.

ALAB has the best D in college football and if you dont believe me watch their 325# DT who moves quicker than a NY City pickpocket. Dude was recruited when he weighed 400#s and went on a diet that covinced Saban he was serious about starting…..ALAB has an NFL D and mediocre O. Still, you have to beat them at home. LSU has a young and fast improving QB. Tough to call–in the SEC, homefield is worth 2 points, max. Gotta go with Vegas.

Boise State, Texas, TCU and Cinn are good to go undefeated, in that order.
Alabama, Iowa and Florida are likely to lose one in that order.

The BCS is still in control.
The Marquee for the Big Show has been set for a SEC v B12 confrontation.
A one loss SEC team will go to Pasadena to play an undefeated Longhorn team come hell or high water.
Cinn, Iowa, TCU, Boise State notwithstanding.

As Walter Cronkike would say as he closed every evening,
    “….and that’s the way it is….goodnight”.

  187. dittohead November 6, 2009 11:52 am

“Hawaii? 1 million to 1 odds to win the last 5 games…which is to say, I don’t think so”.
