Pete Jek wins pair of tickets

avis2

Once again, the lovely and wickedly humorous Avis Yasumura (Castle High grad) has selected the winner. And the pair of tickets go to … Pete Jek.

Thanks again for playing. We’ll have more drawings tomorrow.

All of the winners who haven’t contacted me, should e-mail: sstsai@hawaii.edu or call my cell at (808) 256-0223. Thanks.

From UH:

Approximately 1,000 University of Hawai‘i football supporters attended the Centennial Celebration Gala, Wednesday night at the Sheraton Waikīkī Hotel, which culminated the season-long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of UH’s inaugural football season.

The event raised $275,000, the largest amount for a single event in the University’s history. Proceeds benefit the UH football program with $100,000 going towards supporting the football program and the other $175,000 towards an endowment for football operational expenses.

One of the attendees was former UH receiver/returner Marco Johnson (pictured on the right, with Rich Miano). He and his wife own a college:

It would be great for Adam Leonard to be able to serve as a student manager–he was excellent in Mack’s system. Most importantly, it is great that he will get his degree!

I like how UH is mentioned in this article about Colorado’s schedule for next season.

It includes a September trip to California, followed by home games against resurgent Hawaii and Georgia.

    Welcome home Adam Leonard.

    Glad that you’re getting degree.

  8. Garret December 3, 2009 6:48 am

Notre Dame is 6-6, so they have limited bowl options. They wish for a spot in the Hawaii Bowl again but are out of luck. I seriously doubt they would choose the Humanitarian Bowl…

The Irish leapt at the chance to play in Hawaii last season, but there won’t be a spot open there this year, and their 6-6 record will probably limit them to one of four games with an empty slot due to an unfulfilled conference tie-in. The list: the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl against a Mid-American Conference team in Detroit on Dec. 26; the EagleBank Bowl, probably against Marshall, at RFK Stadium in Washington on Dec. 29; the Humanitarian Bowl against a Western Athletic Conference team in Boise, Idaho, on Dec. 30; and the GMAC Bowl, also against a MAC team, in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 6.

Remember – Wahine basketball tonight, tomorrow and Saturday plus men’s basketball on Sunday – with Dwain and Doug back in the lineup.

    “I wanna play.”

Once again, is anyone going to be attending Sunday’s Alex Waterhouse Football Awards luncheon at the Sheraton Waikiki? At $75 a ticket, it’s a real bargain, plus we get a chance to be in Waikiki on a Sunday and then watch the men’s basketball team play at 5 pm. What more can we ask for?

Well, how about a sweep for the Wahine in Los Angeles and Kamehameha Highway Road Kill on Saturday? Plus wins for the women’s basketball team tonight, tomorrow & Saturday.
    .
Don’t forget to bring your HI-5 cans and bottles from home to the last regular T-Gate/ This time the money goes to the Women’s Summer School Fund.

With regards to UH Mens Basketball,

They need to get healthy both mentally and physically quick because it looks like this season might end being a very long season and might even be Bob Nash’s last at the helm. I really hope not but so far there really has not been a change in play from last year.

We still have problems shooting the ball and our defense at times is none existent. Once again, I really hope they can turn it around and get back on track. We’ll just have to wait and see.

  55. Kazz December 3, 2009 9:02 am

Last night’s 100th Anniversary of UH Football Gala was not bad. Food was not the typical style as it was a set three course meal served to the tables. Salad was umm… well as RK put it last night: “Was it just me or did the salad look like sashimi when they served it to you?”. It was several slices of tomato and sweet potato garnished with what looked and tasted like alfalfa sprouts with goat cheese and dressing of some sort… Dinner itself was some pretty tender prime rib with coconut prawns, maui potato mash and greens and for dessert it was a like a chocolate soufflé/cake combination with macadamia nuts and pecans.

The ambiance was, well, not as festive as the Alex Waterhouse Banquets, no current football players represented at all, but in acknowledgement, one player from the 1940’s era of UH football was in attendance as well as many others along the way up until the most recent represented alumni with Coaches Rolo, Brian Smith, and Toni Tuioti.

As I posted yesterday, they “herded” all of us (about 1,200) through one entrance in which they set up the actual inflatable UH helmet they use at Aloha Stadium on gameday for all the attendees to enter the ballroom through, that was pretty awesome and the UH cheerleaders (in uniform) greeted us to add to the atmosphere.

The VIPs included Dr. Edison Miyawaki (philanthropist extraordinaire and BIG time donor to UH athletics, OIA and ILH athletics as well, not to mention my mom’s long time boss), Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, JD, Coach Mack, Bob Wagner, UH President Marcy Greenwood, Linda Lingle, Mufi Hannemann, and Dick Vermeil. Saw Hugh Yoshida around also, but I don’t think he was at the head table. I didn’t see other UH coaches from other sports there though, then again Coaches Nash and Shoji are away on the road. When the VIPs came out the UH pep band played them out to our fight song and that got me going. Then they led us into “Hawaii Pono i” and then exited with “Hawaii Five O”.

Then came dinner, which I already mentioned.

Then came the speeches. For me I couldn’t get over Linda Lingle speaking so highly of the importance of football in relation to education… I’m not gonna get into more of what I think about her speech… 🙄

Items at the silent auction included vintage UH helmets (EVEN THE GOLD ONE) and current ones with one signed by Coach Mack, also there was a Steelers and Bengals helmet and a autographed bat and jersey from Benny Agbayani (sp? 😯 ), not to mention Vegas packages and a Super Bowl package, but I believe this was a live auction item along with a USC vs UH 2010 VIP package.

Dick Vermeil gave a detailed speech about his seven points of success. Honestly I cannot recall much of the speech as I kept getting phone calls and had to keep getting up to leave. Sufficed to say, the essence of his speech was that of “telling a young man he’s nothing, he’ll eventually believe it, but tell a young man or woman they are something, eventually they will become it”.

There were a lot of “BEAT WISCONSIN” sentiments shared by many of the guest speakers, the stuff you’d expect of course.

Then there was the video piece put together by KITV’s RK and Rob Demello. RK joked how excited he was to be given the assignment to put this together by JD, but then realized how hard it was to find footage preceding 1976. Needless to say the video started from the beginning of the College of Hawaii Fighting Deans to today’s Warriors. Notable parts of the video, was a somewhat detailed accounting of the 1941 team that joined in the fight in WWII and how members of the UH football team and the SJSU team in that year helped out the local police in maintaining order in Honolulu immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack. Considering the lack of really old footage I think they did an ok job. There was however, some good black and white FILM footage of the 1930’s and 1940’s squads I believe. Also, clips of TV interviews with Niko and Al Noga were placed into the video. I believe the video presentation was about 20 minutes long.

At the end, after Dick Vermeil’s speech, I don’t think too many people stuck around for the live auction as it was like an exodus to the exits. However, my brother stayed back and told me the check presented to Jim Donovan was about $227,000.00.

    Dinner Insider Update

Chevron and Na Koa hosted over 40 former Hawaii football players at a private reception. Room cost, heavy pupus (so we didn’t care what was for dinner), and Centennial limited edition polo shirts (issued to former players only) were provided by Chevron. Carina Tagupa coordinated the event from Chevron’s end.
Also provided for FB Alums was a hosted bar; Kelly McGill provided the wine and Na Koa provided the beer. Na Koa also provided players Warrior Football jerseys with the players former number on it. When former players opened those bags with the shirts and the jerseys the room lit up with their smiles.
Coach Wagner, Chancellor Hinshaw, and Jim Donovan were also in attendance.

I’ve got to go now Rock,
    it’s alright I’m not afraid.
    Some time Rock,
when the team is up against it,
and the breaks are beating the boys,
ask them to go in there with all they’ve got
and win just one for the Gipper.
I don’t know where I’ll be then Rock,

    al

Tickets and pre-game field passes were given by UHAD for fb alums only. This is a new tradition for the last game started by Jim Donovan in conjunction with Na Koa and the UH Letterwinners Club.

Regular season field passes are part of the benefits package for Na Koa donors

Jerseys were signed off UH inventory for alums only. My promise to UHAD was that all remaining jerseys go back to the Equipment Room with my updated inventory control list.

I believe that from time to time jerseys are on sale at Rainbowtique.

I believe that Na Koa will start its own promotional program next season utilizing our website at http://www.nakoa.org
Look for the future members only section where tickets, parking, and field pass promotions will be found

For you Colt fans- the cult of Colt on ExtremeSkins now has 440,440 views and 12,112 posts. the Flame for Colt in the NFL still burns brightly!

Speaking of Colt- he has also been a musical inspiration!
    http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/music/article/732119–another-class-of-babylon
“But oppression is relative, explained the title track’s author, vocalist/guitarist Jacob Hemphill, who said the tune was born of artistic and athletic discrimination experienced by him and Washington Redskins quarterback pal Colt Brennan. “Everybody told him he wouldn’t go to the NFL because he’s a little too short and he throws sidearm,” said Hemphill by phone. “And it was kind of like me: as a white guy, I wasn’t supposed to get this far singing reggae.”

“Me and (Brennan) were sitting there talking one day like, `Dude, nobody wants us to f–king make it because of who we are, it’s so f–king Babylon.’ He said, `I came from a good family and good house, but because of who I was everybody says I can’t make it; so it’s like I might as well have come from nothing and pulled myself all the way up.'”

Thus, the lyrics of “Born in Babylon”: “I came from nothing/But not nothing, like nothing/Nothing like nobody thought I was something.”

It is great what you and JD has tried to do to get our Alumni more involved with the school. With both of you also being former Alumni it is great to know that both of you have the vision to give the school back to the Alumni and let these Alumni also give back to the school.

It is always nice to let the Alumni know that we still remember what they did for the school and that we thank them for there contribution.

To you as a Alumni and to the rest of the Alumni out there (JD and Pride definitely included) I thank you for what you all have done to shape the landscape of UH Football.

Mahalo Nui Loa and please keep up the great work.

To my Brother Pomai during this Christmas Holiday I dedicate my poem to you and “TITA” as I felt your heartfelt words and your hurt for your LOVE one during this caring season as I reach out to you my brother with my words of sincerity, compassion and rhymes that I wrote in 2003 in memory of my fallen Hawaii football friend Mike Stennis who lost his life at age 45 to colin cancer.

Don’t think of her as gone away, The journey’s just begun
Life holds so may simple facets, this earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting, from the sorrows and the tears
A place for warmth and comfort, where there are no days or years.

Think how she must be wishing, that we could no today
How nothing but our sadness can really pass away

And think of her as LIVING in the HEARTS of those she touched
For NOTHING love is ever lost, As SHE is LOVED SO MUCH !

In memory of Pomai’s Tita as I type it with love and sincerity as
you touched my HEART when you reached out to me as I kind sir
reached back and ask ALL of Tsaiko Nation to reach and HUG YOU
during this Christmas Time Of Year. “RIP Tita”

Don’t understand Oregon. Running plays with 8-10 seconds on the play clock.

  249. Momona December 3, 2009 6:58 pm

Last night’s event was one of the best – overheard Chancellor Hinshaw say this is how fundraisers need to be. Everyone got the video and a souvenier medallion. Coming out of the helmet was neat. Having Dr. Miyawaki as the guest of honor was fitting.

The only disappointment was the lack of Tsaikos participation. Besides Kazz, where were the rest of you???

  250. duffer (iPhone) December 3, 2009 6:59 pm

Going for it on 4th down at the 18. Sound familiar.

You put a chuck under the rollers before it builds up speed. Take the blockers out before they start rolling.

Could we dress Adam Leonard (incognito) for the game?
Coach Mac will come up with something innovative for this one.

Got a weird one for you.

My son just received a registered pouch from Mumbai, India containing pills. The pills were labled Pelosta-1. My wife got all wild thinking he was ordering drugs over the internet. We looked up the drug name and found a forum with people saying they have received unsolicited pills in the mail too. Turns out the pills are a cure for baldness. Might flush them down the toilet, or maybe I might give them to some bald person.

  297. Kona Girl December 3, 2009 9:07 pm

    OldDiver –
ITS A SCAM – Don’t throw them away, return them. My husband got the same thing and then found out his charge card was being charged every month for them….his were the Amazon Diet Pills. Anyway, the scam is once they know you have accepted the first delivery, they claim that you ordered them and accepted them and then charge your credit card EVERY month. They treat it like a “club” type thing and will keep sending them to you. We’re still battling it with AmEx, but my advice would be to return them so they can’t claim that you “accepted” them to begin with. Good Luck!

    thanks for the reply.

really though i was thinking that that kind of cross promo could go a long way for na koa to recruit new members. these fanatical tsaiko friends of mine might just need that little push to also make them na koa members.

there are a good number of tsaiko/na koans in our group. can get more to come along.

perhaps something simple like getting an invite from na koa to a function. eh, even a tsaiko table for the na koa luncheons might be a great starting point.

    Hiya!

Just got back from a meeting @ my son’s halau. They had a very successful Hoike last Saturday- which I missed because of the Navy Game. I’m missing his 18th birthday this Saturday too… but they will be putting on a FREE show at the Waimea Theatre on Saturday, the 19th at 2pm before the Waimea Light Parade. So PLEASE COME if you are on Kauai!
The Ukuleleboi will actually play a ukelele again for that show!

    Ok.
Congrats Pete Jek who won the “good” tickets.
Looking forward to the next contest 😆

  307. uhwarriors December 3, 2009 9:27 pm

    Al,

Tsaikos do come to the lunches and sit at their “regular table” in the back left hand corner of the room. I’m not sure there is any significance but the table is right next to the start of the buffet line.

momona- I got a notice at work from another business – checking to see if we could attend the special event. But the $300 price tag, taking a day off work and spending another $200 for last minute plane tix was too much. Sorry to have missed it.

Kekoa- glad the ua passed swiftly by. Looks like the Maui folks are next in line!

  309. d1島 December 3, 2009 9:43 pm

I sat at the Tsaikos table the last time I was in Hawaii when a Na Koa lunch was held…the food was so good and the football discussion so interesting that I’d be at every lunch if I lived in Hawaii.

  312. Garret December 3, 2009 9:48 pm

Since I live on the mainland, I really appreciate the lunch reports that uhwarriors has done for years. Such a great memory and attention to detail!

  316. Garret December 3, 2009 9:51 pm

Interesting approach to fighting obesity…getting the body to generate brown fat cells instead of white fat cells. The whole purpose of brown fat cells are to burn fat (for example, to keep babies warm), so it is possible to use fat cells to “burn” unwanted excess fat! They can apparently regulate the brown fat in order to control exactly how much excess fat the body burns.

    Garret..

Well.. so much for the “honey” in ‘honeybee’, eh?

Brown fat… I was reading about that not too long ago. Sounds very promising. Wonder what food sources contain the PKG enzyme, eh? I wonder. Does that mean that if we stay in colder places instead of saunas, we stand a better chance of losing weight as our body will fight to generate heat and maybe activate some of these cells?

  320. Curt December 3, 2009 10:06 pm

It’s late and still I wanna play.

  321. madeinhawaii December 3, 2009 10:10 pm

    Garret,

I believe that same PKG or protein kinase G enzyme is also linked to cancer. Apparently PKG keeps certain cells from proliferating endlessly. When PKG is absent, these cells continue to proliferate out of control as cancer cells.

  322. jm2375 December 3, 2009 10:16 pm

Congrats to PeteJek. Have a great time at the game.

I’m still waiting for my tix. 😀

  323. Garret December 3, 2009 10:17 pm

    madeinhawaii,

It is interesting that infant honeybees can release that odor that will force their older sisters to serve them, enhancing the infant’s life but reducing the length of their older siblings. That is a survival mechanism that is pretty cold-blooded.

  324. Bulla December 3, 2009 10:18 pm

  325. madeinhawaii December 3, 2009 10:21 pm

  326. al December 3, 2009 10:22 pm

    uhwarriors….haha.
    good one.
yup, don’t get caught between the buffet and the tsaiko table they have been know to blindside an innocent bystander when the cow bell rings.

  327. Garret December 3, 2009 10:23 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I do not think that the brown fat is affected much by adults living in cold weather…other body mechanisms come into play then. There has been a lot of work into the study of being able to control the production of brown fat, because if they can do this the result would be amazing! Self-regulating bodies that burn the excess fat without requiring exercise could wipe out obesity and save millions of lives and billions in health care costs. Buffet owners would definitely rejoice!

Trouble is, I think when they figure out how this brown fat works it will be quite expensive to control it. So, it might end up being a way for rich people to get rid of their fat, but if the price cannot be brought down then it won’t have much effect on the general public.

  328. madeinhawaii December 3, 2009 10:24 pm

    Garret…

Hmmm… that honeybee pheremone bit sounds like a winning horror flick story line… some mad scientist developing the human version… enslaving women..( young man’s fantasy) only to have them all grow old on him too quickly.. (young man’s nightmare).

Al ~ Our newest Tsaiko scolded a lady in the buffet line for taking the last serving of salad! Then, she ended up sitting right next to him. She continued to take a verbal pounding from him for eating the last of the salad – even tho she offered to share.

Then, she told him they brought out a fresh bowl! The dye was cast. Mea Culpas were not acceptable, as she continued to plead her case.

Life’s lesson learned by this miscreant…DO NOT cross a Tsaiko in any food line. She left very humbled by the experience.

  332. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 3, 2009 10:39 pm

The reason we didn’t attend the dinner last night is simply $$$$. For the two of us, we would have paid $700 ($350 each). Since I took a major hit in income this year because of funding cutbacks plus I’ve got two surgical co-pays coming up later this month, we had to make decisions about what we wanted to spend on nice-2-haves so we went with season tickets for all UH winter & spring sports – men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball – rather than attend the dinner.

Very few mistakes made this evening by the Wahine basketball team – but the real test of how good they are – or even could be – comes this Saturday when they play the Big BYU in Lai`e at 1 pm.

  333. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 3, 2009 10:43 pm

This press releast came in while I was at tonight’s game”

Bess Press, an independent Honolulu book publishing company,
offered a generous donation today of recent “Top 20 Bestsellers” – “Hawaii Warrior Football: A Story of Faith, Hope and Redemption” and “IZ: Voice of the People” – to the Hawaii State Public Library System.

“Hawaii Warrior Football,” written by J. David Miller features a Forward by former UH Head Football Coach June Jones. Author Rick Carroll’s “IZ: Voice of the People” includes a Forward by Marlene Kuupua Kamakawiwoole (wife of the late musician Israel Kamakawiwoole).

Benjamin “Buddy” Bess, Publisher of Bess Press, presented 3,000 copies of each book worth a combined total of more than $100,000 to State Librarian Richard Burns and Carol Mon Lee, Chairperson of the Board of Education’s Committee on Legislation, Public Charter Schools & Public Libraries.

“We are very grateful to Buddy Bess and Bess Press for their overwhelming generosity and sincere aloha for Hawaii’s public libraries during this holiday season,” said Burns. “Hawaii Warrior Football,” the most authoritative and significant book in the history of University of Hawaii football, and “IZ: Voice of the People,” which presents the life and times of Israel Kamakawiwoole, one of Hawaii’s greatest musicians, will be added to enhance our sports and music collections, respectively, and are scheduled to be part of various library promotions in the near future.”

    Marco Johnson

is a role model and class act from Hawaii.

founder and owner of Antelope Valley Medical College, Johnson, 37, teaches skills needed to save lives. The school offers extensive classes and vocational training in various aspects of healthcare. The facility, with 10 full-time teachers, provides cardiopulmonary resuscitation cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency procedure used to treat victims of cardiac and respiratory arrest. CPR can be done in a hospital with drugs and special equipment or as a first-aid technique.

A person trained and certified to appraise and initiate the administration of emergency care for victims of trauma or acute illness before or during transportation of victims to a health care (EMT See Efficient markets theory. ) training and certification, and re-certification to individuals and businesses throughout the state of California. Corporate clients include Boeing Co., Burger King, nearby Antelope Valley Hospital, and employees of the city of Lancaster in Lancashire, England.
Throughout his career, Johnson says he has witnessed hundreds of unnecessary civilian causalities due to a lack of civilian CPR and first-aid training. The most disturbing event for him occurred on Christmas Eve 1996. Johnson and his colleagues were battling a raging blaze in Los Angeles; a single mother and her three children were trapped inside a burning apartment building. While firefighters were successful in rescuing the family from the inferno, two of the children suffered respiratory failure. The third child died in the rescue unit.

Johnson believes that if onlookers and passers-by had been trained in even the most basic methods of CPR and emergency assistance, one or perhaps all of the children would have survived. “Instead, the lives of three innocent children expired and a mother lost her family,” he says. “I will never forget that night and seeing the bodies of those children.”

It was this tragic event that prompted him to start the school, initially as a side business with his wife, Sandra, helping out. “My wife would schedule appointments and I would teach classes between shifts and on my days off from the fire department,” he says. Using borrowed mannequins, Johnson held free CPR and first-aid training seminars from home and taught only a handful of students. After a few months, as his classes started to grow, he was able to buy his own teaching equipment, rent office space, and reap a small profit.

Johnson is very passionate when discussing the importance of CPR training. “Knowing the basics of CPR and first aid saves lives,” he says. “Knowing how to take someone’s pulse and heart rate and do chest compressions can mean the difference between life and death.”

Antelope Valley Medical College is his college.

Good job, Marco Johnson. Enjoy your success. Warrior Nation is Proud of you and your accomplishments both at UH and in the pros in Texas.

    ..Game facts: Wisconsin at Hawaii

What: Wisconsin (8-3) at Hawaii (6-6) in a nonconference college football game

When: Saturday, 10:30 p.m. Central time

    Where: Aloha Stadium, Honolulu

TV: ESPN2 with Terry Gannon and David Norrie

Radio: WIBA-FM/101.5 and AM/1310 with Matt Lepay and Mike Lucas

Schedules, rosters, stats: Wisconsin | Hawaii
HONOLULU — In one breath, Kerry Cooks says he believes the University of Wisconsin football team’s cornerbacks will bounce back from a poor performance two weeks ago against Northwestern.

In the next, the Badgers’ secondary coach admits he never knows quite what he’s going to get from a young group that includes starters Devin Smith and Niles Brinkley.

So Cooks will hope for the best but knows he’ll ultimately have to wait and see until the Badgers take the field Saturday night against pass-happy Hawaii at Aloha Stadium.

“As soon as you feel pretty good about a game or two games, about the kids understanding the concepts and practicing hard and moving forward and being ready to take that next step, then you face a game to where they take another step back,” Cooks said. “Now you’re back to square one.”

That’s where Cooks’ players find themselves after the Badgers’ 33-31 loss to Northwestern on Nov. 21. The Wildcats had 364 passing yards and became the fourth team this season to have at least three passing touchdowns against UW, which ranks 76th nationally in pass efficiency defense.

The cornerbacks aren’t solely to blame for those issues, but they’re clearly the weakest link on the team.

Cooks’ biggest issue with Smith, Brinkley and backup Antonio Fenelus has been a lack of consistency. The young corners – Smith and Fenelus – are sophomores, Brinkley – a junior – will be good in one game and bad in the next.

Case in point: On Oct. 31, UW held Purdue, which is third in the Big Ten Conference in passing offense, to 81 yards through the air. The next week, Indiana passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns and nearly pulled off an upset.

Sometimes, as was the case against Northwestern, UW’s Jekyll and Hyde act will appear in the same game. The Wildcats produced 248 passing yards, 27 points and all three of their passing touchdowns during a first half that saw them build a 13-point lead.

In the second half, Northwestern had 116 passing yards and scored its only points on field goals.

Had it not been for the fact Cooks shaves his head, he would have plucked every last hair out by hand this season.

“You can’t begin to understand how frustrating that is,” Cooks said. “You go out there in the first half and you give up (27) points, then you come back and give up six points. It’s like, ‘Go play that way in the first half.’

“And all it is is just focus and paying attention to the details.”

UW (8-3) will need to do both well to contain Hawaii (6-6), which features a run-and-shoot offense that uses four wide receivers and ranks third nationally with 348.7 passing yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Bryant Moniz’s favorite target is Greg Salas, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior who has 103 receptions for 1,559 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

Preventing the big play is something the Badgers have struggled with this season. It could be an issue again against Salas, who averages 15.1 yards per catch, and the Warriors.

UW has allowed 41 pass plays of 20 or more yards this season, including 15 completions of 30 or more yards.

Northwestern had seven plays of 20 or more yards through the air against UW – including six in the first half – while Michigan State, Iowa and Indiana each had six apiece.

“It has to be every play, every game,” Cooks said. “It can’t be every 10 plays are great and then have one (bad) play, because that one play is the one that hurts us.”

While going against an excellent passing attack such as Hawaii’s might not seem like an ideal scenario after the way things played out for the UW secondary at Northwestern, coach Bret Bielema sees it as an opportunity for the group to prove itself.

“The only way you get it off your chest is to go out and play,” Bielema said. “I like the fact that they know that they’re a focal point of our success.”

Cooks might not know exactly what he’ll get from his group Saturday, but he’s confident effort won’t be an issue.

“They definitely won’t back down,” Cooks said. “They’ll be excited. They’ve got a bad taste in their mouth right now that they want to get out. As a DB, these are the type of games that you want to play in

    day yu go!

Coach Rolo! Moniz! Medeiros! Salas. You Go Go Go!
