Not sure if we mentioned this, but former UH defensive lineman Josh Leonard signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s on their practice squad.

We learned today that Joey Lipp has been added to the Senior Night list. Lipp, actually, should have one more season. But he will earn his bachelor’s degree in May, and he wishes to begin a master’s program on the Mainland next fall.
Lipp has rarely played, but he’s one of those guys essential to a team. He was on scout team, playing almost all of the offensive line position. He practiced hurt; overcame meniscus surgery, and played some more. He even volunteered to move to defense.
Most of all, he was a good teammate. He never complained. And he embraced Hawai‘i. He moved to Kailua this past summer.
The Warriors will miss him.

Kenny Estes will miss the Wisconsin game because of a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The injury will not require surgery.

Gotta make sure they boys take care of them stinkin Badgers first and foremost, then can worry about the Christmas present game with the Pony Boys. I know the boys can do it, like I said before only they can beat themselves. Anyway, nice to see Moniz getting some recognition. Each game it seems he has progressed and gotten more comfortable with the offense. I don’t think anyone has been able to settle in as quick as Moniz in such a complicated offense. I think he is very deserving of a schollie. Also, as much as I love Inoke for being a team player, sometimes I feel like he need to be more selfish so we can see him on the field with the ball in his hands. He is one of the more exciting guys to watch on the field like Kealoha Pilares. Finally Kealoha was getting the football thrown his way again, WTF what took so long? Here’s a story that hopefully the folks in administration will read.
Yesterday I was at a local eatery and was somewhat amazed by the quantity of food three polynesian gentlemen were attempting to purchase. They were laughing and really having a great time with the woman taking their order. being curious, I asked one of them if they were ordering fro family and friends. The gentleman laughed and said “no, this is our lunch.” You can imagine the quantity being ordered.
This is the part of the story I want them to read and understand. These three large gentlemen were simply the most pleasant, well mannered folks in the room, in spite of their size. When asking for a can of juice of an older man behind the counter, there was an “excuse me”, “please” and “thank you” mentioned with each request.
I don’t think people there recognized these gentlemen but I did as they were members of the UH Warrior football team.
If this is what happens to young men who come from tough communities to the University of Hawaii on scholarship to get an education and play ball, and in the course of this experience learn to become contributing, responsible citizens of the community, it is well worth the expense to have an athletic program. I do not know what may happen to these gentlemen if they were not offered such a road, but look at the statistics of who are overrepresent in our penal system. The cost to warehouse juveniles and young adults is far more costly and less productive than what a good coach and a supportive system can do.
Education comes in many different forms and it does not only happen in a classroom. Sometimes the classroom of life via an athletic program is well worth being a part of one’s higher education.
These young men were my inspiration for the day. Terrific gentlemen and a credit to the University and our community.

Thanks for your post #56. I can remember some years before June (and a couple of his early years) when football players were in the news for other than exemplary behavior. Since then, I believe recruiting has brought in better talent and better citizens to establish a culture we can be proud of…just my opinion, of course.

Thanks too, bhf2, for #17. For all the internal storm of criticism that has blown through here in the past couple of months, it’s refreshing to see what other coaches have to say about Hawaii…”seeing how others see us”. Being a glass half full kind of guy, I like what we’ve done in dealing with key injuries (many teams fall apart after their #1 QB goes down for the season) and trusting in the leadership of a former 4th string QB who delivered pizzas not too long ago. Win or lose, I’ll gladly cheer for that kind of internal fortitude.

The most famous quote in sports is “down goes Frazier.!” Unfortunately, Tiger Woods went down a last couple of days. Hopefully, he gets up from the canvas and keeps fighting, and hopefully a lot smarter. As a public figure like him, everything is news and no matter he wants privacy he’s basically got no privacy. Everything he does will be news because he is Tiger Woods. He better be on his best behavior because he has a lot to lose. He’s still my favorite golfer and I root for him to win when he’s playing, but I think he took a big hit (punch) recently. He will be continued to be dogged by what was he doing at 2:25 a.m. in the morning and where was he going? The media will continue to bring it up.
Like I said, whatever Woods does, it’s big news. Everybody else, it’s not a story.

Friday’s volleyball match against New Mexico starts at 3 pm with the second match scheduled at 5 pm. Both will be covered by K5. From what I understand, Murphy’s downtown is planning to hold a TV-Gate plus most sports bars and places like Big City Diner will also have their tv sets tuned to K5 from 3 pm on. It’s Saturday that bothers me..
the holes in the cheese, although primarily swiss cheese, are the result from some “gassy bacteria” that is incorporated into the cheese process. you know a bacteria that farts.
this also makes the taste as such as well as the “hole-y cheese”. some other cheeses have holes in them though not as profound.

i could see someone like the sec trying to fanagle two berths. perhaps splitting their conference in two or some other power move.
either way again someone will be left out and pissed. my guess is that 16 would be the most as it would take too long otherwise.

In the second half of the season..(the last 5 games) the Warriors are 4-1. The Badgers, 3-2. In the last six games the Badgers are 3-3. In the last quarter, the Warriors are 4-0, the Badgers, 3-1. In the last game, the Warriors won.. the Badgers came up short. The Badgers are 50% on the road. Hawaii is 80% at home.
I see great possibilities for our Warriors in this game.

#102…. i suppose you first need to figure out the maximum number of games that any team should be allowed to play (championship included.) Then, work backwards to see how many 2 – 4 – 8 – 16 – 32 <-5 games.
If 13 is the max number of games allowed… then each conference can only have 8 games. That would then require a realignment of most conferences. Most would shift to have 5 – 7 in conference games and the rest, out-of-conference.
32 teams would mean 16 conferences with 2 coming from each conference.
Maybe even get rid of the "conference" affiliation as the qualifying ticket and simply have teams ranked the BCS way with every one of the top 32 playing in the playoffs.
Problem is… 8 games is too short of a season for most so there will have to be consolation brackets and bowls… otherwise, schools would lose money big time.

It sounds like TCU’s Patterson believes football is just a game and not a religious ritual that consumes all of our time and energy. What’s wrong with that guy. Heh!
mih…..a maximum number of games should not apply to a championship tournament as it would not be equitable to the other 100+ teams.
afterall, only a handful will move on. they should take the example that is in place for d-1aa, etc.
this would mean though that the rich will get richer. although some kind of conference sharing would most definitely be in place. independents like notre dame could reap much from this format.
however, my guess is it will be light years before the ncaa creates a football champion tournament simply because those that “rule the bcs” will have nothing to gain and would lose all control of the monopoly that they now enjoy and would definitely pull out all the stops to prevent such a tournament.

You think UH will try the different “sets” for different offenses?
They had some success with the 4-3 this year, but kept tinkering with the alignment for each team; ie, no DL and 5-6 LBs who were constantly moving to upset the QB. Some times all 6 blitzed while other times only 4 rushed.
If a 3-5-3 or a 3-4-4, would you put a NT and 2 DEs or 3 DL?
How confusing would it be to “teach” this to the defense? How effective would this be against an opponent?

I wouldn’t put it pass McMackin to put all of his best players on the field in some innovative way if the team they are playing against warrants it. Next season’s starters will be a mixture of players that have had 1-3 years learning Mack’s Defense and assignments and vice-versa — meaning Mack will be very familiar with what each player brings to the table — their capabilities and limits. (Furthermore, if we have injuries going into the season, having equally talented backups won’t hurt.) One thing for sure, the coaching staff hasn’t been afraid of experimenting and keeping players in the game based on their knowledge of the schemes as well as their play on the field or in practice, rather than size.
It’s fun to be able to look forward to what the Defense might bring to each game, again. Reminiscent of the Tomey and Wagner years, but with the RnS on Offense.

Yes, the Warrior defense against Navy did “hint” of UH defenses decades ago when they were “swarming” to the ball carrier, hitting, and bringing down RBs and receivers.
That’s very exciting and hope the defensive coaches can maintain that spirit for Wisconsin.
In years past, Rainbow players were less talented, but able to sustain their play and stay with the likes of USC, Oklahoma, etc. late into the 4th quarter. A similar Navy effort against Wisconson could bring surprising results!!! Hope UH can use more players so the 1st teamers can get some needed rest.

I’m sure a lot of you remember this too….but during the final quarter of the Navy game it was reminiscent of BYU games of old. When we stood up for the whole game and the house was LOUD!!!
I asked Pono if he thought that game would make a difference for a recruit who was watching from the sidelines and contemplating where he’d like to play ball….and he said TOTALLY! That’s a good sign for things to come. Coach Mac needs to keep the best players home.

Willie was the guy who crafted the defense against Colt & co. in the Sugah Bowl.
Guess coach richt is blaming others for his losses the past 2 years.
Good evening Tsaiko Nation, just got back from Irvine and saw the Bows lose a game of two different halves in which they got so far behind by 17 at halftime and made a better effort in the second half BUT too far a mountain to climb as they lost by 10 / 80 to 70 as Irvine will be tough this year in the Big West batteling Fullerton, Northridge, Long Beach, Santa Barbara and Pacific.
The MAIN problem with the Bows is that they don’t have no beef on the front line and their preperation before tip off leaves many questions that has to be address with focus, discipline and fundamentals as the key components in which they don’t pick up soon it is going to be a looooooooooong season.
The flex can only give you the cutter away from ball side as Irvine just clogged it up in the middle and many offensive sequences the Bows were left standing looking. Irvine played a tough match up zone defense as the staggart line with the guards bother the bows as they were quick and aggresive on the ball and covering the middle.
Adhar Mayen played terrific as well as Mr. Thompson who listened to me when I coached him from my seat “Bend and extend” !
If Jeremy Lay is the best player he had a HORRIBLE game with all shots off as he made no adjustment to try anything different. Roderick played BIG in the second half but no where to be found in the 1st half as miss free throws, turnovers and poor shooting caused them a big deficit in which their comeback noble as it was could not get over the top for various reasons.
Saw my good friend Mark Rodrigues and LONG time Hawaii buddy Leroy Lutu as we smiled with laughter upon seeing each other. Coach Jim Harrick MY BUDDY from way past gave me a reunion hug of good old times stake as it weas a pleasure to see him after being absence from the heart.
Long tough season as the Bows head back to Hawaii with anguish and dissapointment of a game they got down BIG and rally too late to over come the final lost that puts them at 2-4 with Lamar waiting to put their high flying skills to work !

saturday night is going to be a classic. on defense, it is going to be the “battle of the bull mooses”. the best part is both mooses are on our side and the dairy cows are on the other. the moon will be up and you know the nursery rhyme about the cow jumping over the moon except in this case, they going get thrown over the moon. ouch, ouch, ouch

Are there any formal gatherings for Tsai-kos to watch the Wahine play on Friday? I know it’s a junk time – 3 pm – for most people, but it might be fun to put something together at one of the usual joints.
As for Saturday, don’t forget that the Wahine take on Big BYU in a non-conference basketball game in Lai`e at 1 pm. As of now, it will not be on radio or tv so the only way to see it is in person.
Word on the street is that tvs will be set to K5 in Aloha Stadium shortly before 5 pm, but that has not yet been confirmed. If not, then remember to set the recorder before heading off to the game.
Will be giving away the extra ticket for tomorrow’s basketball game by the ticket window since no one here wanted it.
We have an extra ticket to next Wednesday’s men’s basketball game. This time, I have to attend a meeting so DrDoc will go on his own. Does anyone here want it?

Since leaving Hawaii I have had MANY opportunities to be Coach, Scout and Director of Basketball at the HS, AAU, College and NBA level. I have worked with the BEST from Pete Newel NBA Pro Camp in Playa Del Rey, Dr. Aaron Wilson of Philadelphia AAU Round Ball, League Director of Slam N Jam with Izzy Washington, Magic Johnson Basketball Camp in Azusa California and Erikk Aldridge Community Relations of the Los Angeles Lakers 1996-2000. My knowledge of basketball sets, formations, terminology, strategies and scouting individual talent is IMPECCABLE as when ever I go to ANY basketball game by the time I get comfortable in my seat I KNOW what both teams are doing offensively and defensively.
With Bob / Rainbows he NEEDS to go to a motion offense as the flex and high post are to known and GOOD Coaches on ANY level will make adjustments. 5 man passing game will be PERFECT for this talent as it has everyone MOVING with down screen action and piggy back screens on the base line. For any zone defense 1-3-1 high low offense as you can play Roderick at the post or on the block with Hiram at the point and Adhar at the wing as with any pass Roderick plays mid range triangler 3 with your shooters stepping in to flatten the zone. All Night Success !
Half Court Trap or the term I use 3.5 with the quickness he does have in Lay, Thompson, Roderick, Adams and Adhar they will cause HAVOC to the opposing team as when ball is in the corner, rotation from the corner and wing trap, middle drops to the block, opposite wing drops to baseline and PG plays the middle gaps and passing lanes. Steals and lay ups ALL day !
MOTIVATION can GO a long way as players today get HYPED with clapping, eye contact, fist pumping and inspiring your team to play hard with ALL out effort as Hawaii Coaches need to do this MORE often instead when a situation arises for them to “GET UP” !
Finally, my door has ALWAYS been open to help Hawaii as my contacts, knowledge and dedication goes a long way ALL over Southern California BUT if certain standards are SET and egos won’t open up then the results you will have to deal with and they won’t be pretty !

when I wanna see God’s country, i drive up the saddle road, take a right on the Mauna Kea Road, go up about 2 miles, take a right onto the old Mana Road, and drive the 40 miles through the back country to Waimea. a really breathtaking cowboy country trip, full of opening and closing gates. the only time you gotta go off road is when you get in 20 miles exactly, right by the bunkhouse, then you gotta go through the right side gates and drive about 2.5 miles through pasture cuz if you stayed on the dirt road you’d get stuck in two deep ravines unless you had 4 wheel drive.
I tell you that Rainbow Cliff because if you get back over here, you gotta give me da call so i can do dat hookup. da very best of the best. more than Kalalau, Nuloloaina, all doze good spots.
of course, the long road to the backside of Mauna Loa ain’t to shabby either.
I’m putting all this out there so maybe the Wisconsin guyz like go look…

bighilofan2: All I can do for Hawaii from my situation is advise and help BUT it has been going on deaf ears for quite some time as from listening to the insiders who knows both athletic teams I am a violation and booster alumnus only as I have NO affiliation with the basketball or football program BECAUSE I don’t fit in and am not ALLOWED to fit in regardless being an ex-player or can DEFINETLY help in terms of recruiting !
I have been told that I am wasting my time and leave Hawaii athletics to it’s TODAY coaches because NOTHING I have to say will be warranted or taken to advise !
So with that kind sir I offer my services to others who really APPRECIATE it and when all the Southern California Colleges who are NOW recruiting in my area because of the Al Wooten Center College Trak / SAT Prep Program is making a HUGHE difference in these young athletic leapers who are enrolled then Pete Carrol, Rick Neuheiser and South West JC will benefit from it and you will see the results as USC next year in Honolulu is going to be LOADED with a roster of leapers, roadrunners and assasins who will leave their mark as their DEFENSE will have 8 coming from South Central Los Angeles alone ! Good luck as my prayers will be with you as I am OFF to do my own damage athletically !

I especially like your defensive scheme since it calls for creating a steal and pushing the ball back down court for a quick 2! Problem is, you have to wake our guards first!

Kekoa, from looking at Bob’s roster Hiram is smart and condition enough to play the ONE on the trap as Roderick and Mayen will be AWESOME on the wings while Campbell and Adams can interchange the middle and back line area.
Once they have their hands up ( framing the face ) then the 1-3-1 becomes a HUGHE defensive spider web as the passing lanes and seams are covered with arms and limbs with deflections, errant passes and turnovers as OFF we go with steals, lay-ups and dunks. I LOVE the 3.5 because it dosen’t take to much away conditionally as it is half court instead of full and MAJORITY of Coaches do not know how to counter attack it. It was taught to me by Izzy Washington of Slam N Jam and I have kept it with me through out my life time !
An Awesome defensive scheme to cause up tempo and create havoc to the opposing team !
