Colt delivers

The checks are in the mailbox.
Colt Brennan’s wish was completed when the Koolauloa Red Raiders received money to pay cb-suitfor new uniforms for their four Pop Warner teams (ages 8-15).
Brennan and the NFL donated an equal share to the Hau‘ula program.
“They got both checks this week,” Brennan said. “Of all of the things I’ve done, this is something I’m most proud of and most stoked about.”
Brennan learned of the NFL’s matching-donation project from a Redskin teammate. He chose Koolauloa because of his friendship with Gerald Welch, a Hau‘ula resident and former UH slot. Brennan is a frequent visitor to the North Shore. He also noted that the area has one of the highest per-capita rates of developing NFL players.
“That’s awesome for a tiny community,” Brennan said. “Pop Warner is where I found my love for football. I wanted to help, and it was a place that could use the help.”
The only thing he wants in return?
“Updates,” he said. “And a picture of the teams.”

T.J. Alofipo will not play for UH this season. He will either grayshirt (joining the Warriors in January) or attend a junior college.

* * * * *

No list of top UH defensive players would be complete without Demetrius “Doe” Henderson, who started as a true freshman on the 1992 Holiday Bowl championship team. Henderson, who played both corner and safety, has spent doe-12the past decade in Las Vegas as a rap performer and producer. He is co-president of Dynasty Records.
From the set of “Lincoln Heights,” a show featuring his cousin and Dynasty star Mishon Ratliff, Henderson took a couple of minutes to talk story with the Warrior Beat.
Money player.
“I got the (nick)name when I was 2 years old. My mom was saying I loved money. I would always find money around the house.”
The magic number is 1992.
It was a good year, a good experience. The simple fact is we were a team. We had Mainland and local players, and we had camaraderie. We had Jason Elam and Junior Tagoai and Bryan (Addison) and Maa (Tanuvasa) and Darrick (Branch). They kept the camaraderie there. … We had a really good defense. It was just a good team overall. It was great to be part of that. I remember they wanted to redshirt me that year. I didn’t play in the first two games. Then coach (George) Lumpkin came up to me and said, ‘You’re starting.’ It was a shock to me.”
The beginning of the Dynasty …
“I was always into music, even when I was playing. Nobody even knew. I went and bought my first board when I was in Hawai‘i. I taught myself. I was actually rapping. Now I’m more on the business side.”
A family business.
“Mishon is my little cousin. He plays the son of a cop on Lincoln Heights on ABC Family. He’s a singer, also. On the TV show he also sings. He signed with Dynasty Records. Mishon is the main artist. He has a new single, ‘Just A Kiss.’ You can go to mishon.net.”
Best thing about Hawai‘i?
“My children. They were all born in Hawai‘i. I have three daughters in Kamehameha. … I never got to appreciate Hawai‘i like I do now. When I go back, I really appreciate Hawai‘i for what it is. My plans are to retire in Hawai‘i one day.”

  4. Justin July 15, 2009 4:31 am

Besides Fonoti, does UH have any guys who can rush the passer?

    UH seems thin at DE.

  6. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 4:33 am

I think Wadsworth plans on playing a year, then going on a mission.

  7. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 4:35 am

If Brashton sticks at DE, he’ll be a good perimeter rusher. Elliott Purcell also is pretty good. As you know, UH blitzes from everywhere, so even Richard Torres is considered a pass rusher.

  8. Garret July 15, 2009 4:38 am

    ST,

Thank you for the update on Doe Henderson! I love reading about how past players are doing.

  9. Garret July 15, 2009 4:40 am

Wadsworth might not be old enough to go on a mission right away–the age minimum makes a lot of people go to college for a year first before going on their mission.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Stephen-

Your “Couple of Minutes With…” series is becoming a classic. Interviews with Warriors past and present- excellent stuff.

In that 1992 season, I remember running away from work to watch the Holiday Bowl at the old TGIFriday’s on Ward, and feeling kind of irked at some of the other patrons there because they seemed oblivious to the game. That was a great game. Glad to see that Doe is doing well, three daughters at KS- nice.

I have a copy of the game on DVD courtesy of lurker, Dim Sum.

Currently working on the 1989 BYU game. I should have it done within a week.

wf2 probably meant to reference his online bitchslap by curveball- #217 yesterday

  33. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 7:18 am

I think because of the blog’s large readership, it tends to draw a lot of orators. It’s the byproduct of the adage: If a tree falls in a forest and nobody’s around …
I think some tend to “shout” their opinions because they feel it will get them noticed the most. I don’t think that should be the case. Like most of us, I read the posts that are the most interesting, entertaining or logical; I tune out the ones that don’t make any point.
Several lurkers tell me that’s the way they read the blog, too.

  34. Stretch July 15, 2009 7:21 am

Jack Flash – how’s the back feeling??

  35. duffer July 15, 2009 7:25 am

    I read every post, even Stretch’s 🙂

  36. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 7:27 am

I think what was disappointing is that Brashton was supposed to be a feel-good story. He’s endured numerous ailments during his career. He then goes through an intense program, which he paid for himself, to ensure that he would be in great shape. And, yet, some used it to further their campaign of displeasure, for whatever reason, of the coaching staff or conditioning coaches. That’s just sad.
It’s even worse because Brashton’s parents are good friends and loyal blog readers.
I guess some people believe their misery needs company.

  41. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 7:33 am

I believe you’re right, although I’m not sure why the number reference was off because I didn’t delete any posts.

  42. Garret July 15, 2009 7:34 am

I’m glad that Bess, Mouton and Colt have talked on the WB show about how they are being good with their money. It is sad how so many athletes run through the huge amounts of money they earn. The latest example of this is Antoine Walker.

The district attorney’s office has filed a criminal complaint against former NBA all-star Antoine Walker alleging he failed to pay back $822,500 in gambling debts at three Las Vegas casinos.

The complaint charges Walker, 32, who wants to return to the NBA, with three felony counts in passing $1 million in bad checks while taking out the markers at Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood and Red Rock Resort. By law, gambling debts in Nevada are handled as bad check cases.

  43. Diogenes Sinope July 15, 2009 7:36 am

Some of our Bloggers have made good points that should be considered – but over and over again to emphasize them may be the shouting in the wilderness, so to speak. A little civility would also help.

That being said, good morning good people! I made the top 50!

A big hello (for no apparent reason) to the Kid, Al, Stretch, Pride, Myki, Midori, Princess (saw you heading to Oceanic on Saturday but I was in the next aisle heading the other way – alas!) et al.

    Howzit Diogenes!

  47. Garret July 15, 2009 7:39 am

I cannot understand how the NHL’s commissioner could get a 27% raise during tough economic times, pushing his compensation to $7.1 million. The league office did get more revenue, but $56 million of their $74.3 million was from membership dues paid by hockey teams, not revenue coming from outside sources.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman received a 27 percent raise during the 2007-08 season, pushing his salary with benefits to $7.1 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, according to league tax filings.

The salary is the highest Bettman has earned in his 16 years as commissioner and a major increase from his pre-lockout salary of $3.77 million.

  48. Garret July 15, 2009 7:41 am

I guess the strategy for pro hockey’s commissioner is to raise the dues each team has to pay, thus earning a BIG raise for himself due to increasing league office revenue. I sure hope that Karl Benson doesn’t get any ideas from that…

  49. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 7:43 am

    Walt:
Whoops. You’re correct. He’s either going to grayshirt or go to a junior college.

  50. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 7:46 am

    Diogenes’ point is correct.
Maybe the delivery negates the message.
One of our orators has interesting points but he delivers them in, if this is possible, a nasal tone. And I just can’t stand whining.

  51. Jack Flash July 15, 2009 7:49 am

  73. Kekoa July 15, 2009 8:45 am

WarriorFanny2 ~ Thinking of the Tsaiko’s as a brainless group of gluttons who gorge on endless Buffets is simply not fair. Along with pushing legislation thru – with people like W/Doc and K. Mark Takai leading the charge thru the State Legs – our testimonials managed to squeeze a few million out for UH athletics. (and push completion of Cooke/Ching field).

Like I said before, led by Stretch, Garret, Momo and many other deep pockets within the Tsaiko ohana, we have managed to do our part in fund raising. Is there any other Sports blog in Hawaii that does this?…I’m not sure. The point is, we can’t fix all the specific problems in the UHAD. We just do what we can to help. Your being critical only identifies the problem, it does not help to solve it.

I believe you touched a nerve center with Curveball when you pushed your view of wanting a program instituted that is not affordable at this time. Curveball is normally a very quiet individual. Being a retired PD person, he cuts to the chase when he is rankled. (Hang ’em!)

I’m sure there are others that have had the same sentiments, but chose to ignore your post. Most of us don’t hide behind our blog names. You know where to find us if you want to debate the issues toe-to-toe, nose-to-nose! It can be a lot more congenial over a tall cool one!

  74. Stephen Tsai July 15, 2009 8:47 am

I’m thinking it’s time for a breakfast CC at da Wessie clubhouse to welcome Bulla & Lynn into da ‘hood!

Anybody in for Saturday Morning, 07/18/09 at 10:00 AM at Nancy’s? (Sunday morning would be the alternate if need be). Drop a response on the blog.

The good thing about the Satele story is this: the more you work off the field and the more sacrifice you make in the off season, the better you’re going to play. All the hard work that Brashton has put in this summer and the sacrifices he and his family have made are gonna be felt by all the ball carriers he crushes this season. I feel that what Brashton did this summer will give him an edge on the field in both his mind and in his body. He and his family need to be applauded for their efforts.

I’m a lurker. I never comment but since everyone is adding their 2 cents, I’ll chip in. There are those that “shout”, I don’t care. I just skim the comments for those that make sense. What I don’t really care for is how this “blog” is used. Yeah, it may have a large readership but most lurk. Why? Because it isn’t a blog per se, it’s more of a forum and social community. The rest of us don’t care about hearing “good morning”, “good night”, ” I ate at so and so, etc., it’s dakine’s birthday. The group has been growing, but for the most part there is only a small loyal group of people (Tsaiko’s) that contribute to the blog. I don’t have anything against the community, what I have a problem with is that the community is utilizing the blog as its home rather than another site. Us lurkers have to sift through your non-sense comments. If you take a look at the 200+ comments per day, most of it doesn’t even pertain to the topic. I think I speak for the majority of people who read blogs or stuff online. Shout, good or bad comments are fine, so long as you write something legit. But hey it’s the internet and anyone can write anything unless the moderator wants to change it up, which I doubt will happen.

I was sent this very nice article about Farrington H.S. alumnus and starting Arizona State OL Shawn Lauvao. Shawn received his bachelor’s degree in 3 1/2 years, while starting 22 consecutive games as a LG in the Pac 10. He will be getting his master’s degree in December. He is the strongest player on the ASU team and will be moving to LT in his senior season. He performs a lot of charity/community service work and he states that hard work and strict parenting got him to where he is today. Now here is a local kid who has done well. I hope he will be recognized at some point by the Hawaii media.

BTW, when he made his recruiting trip to UH his senior year of high school, the coaches told him that they wanted him to play defensive line. He wanted to continue to play OL and the rest is history.

Joe Montana stood up in the huddle, looked to the sidelines and said, “hey look there’s John Candy”. Everyone in the huddle turned to look at John Candy, laughed for a second and then Montana called the play. Sometimes, you’ve got to relax and have fun.

Wasn’t there a big thing made about Max Unger out of Hawaii Prep by June Jones? He was an O-lineman and JJ wanted to move him to the defensive side, saying Unger was jeopardizing an NFL future by not following his switching advice. Well he did not listen, was all Pac-10 center at Oregon and one of the top center’s in this years NFL draft. Another “rest is history” story.

Willie – Max Unger went to Hawaii Prep, which has a *very* small team in terms of the number of players on the team. The line played both ways, so it wasn’t necessarily a big “switch”.

Colt was mentioned in this article about QB battles in training camp.

Washington — Jason Campbell vs. Todd Collins vs. Colt Brennan: Campbell is the frontrunner to be the Redskins’ No. 1 QB for the third season in a row. Still, Washington flirted with a Cutler deal and also considered drafting Mark Sanchez. Plus, Campbell is entering the final season of his contract. So, the brain trust doesn’t seem to have a ton of confidence in him. That’s why Collins and Brennan will get a chance to unseat Campbell.

  213. Garret July 15, 2009 12:57 pm

Bess was mentioned in this article because Miami’s 4th round pick just signed his contract…and he’s a receiver looking to play in special teams, just like Bess. It sounds like 4 WRs (including Bess) are ahead of Miami’s 4th round draft pick and NFL teams normally only keep 5 WRs, so there will be 4 or 5 WRs competing for the 5th spot. I think that Miami has 8 WRs competing for those 5 spots, with the 2 draft picks probably guaranteed roster spots because Miami couldn’t sneak them onto the practice squad.

On the outside, three receivers clearly have the upper hand on Hartline coming out of minicamp: Hartline’s former Ohio State teammate Ted Ginn Jr., 2009 third-round pick Patrick Turner out of Southern California and Greg Camarillo, who finished second on the team to Ginn in receptions by one catch in 2008 despite missing the last five regular-season games. Camarillo might not be at full strength as he continues recovering from the torn knee ligament that ended his season early. Anthony Armstrong, who spent last year on the practice squad, looked like a possible deep threat with the minimal contact of minicamp.

Although Hartline would have less competition if the Dolphins used him in the slot, there is one thick, muscular player who would seem hard to move out of a starting job: Davone Bess. Bess caught 54 passes, establishing himself as the Dolphins’ slot receiver, and played special teams becoming a coaching staff favorite. Hartline also has been pegged by the Dolphins as a special-teamer.

  214. Garret July 15, 2009 12:58 pm

Bess was mentioned in this USA Today article.

Wide receiver: Dolphins fans surely wonder how much better Miami would be if it had a show stopper at this position. The Dolphins instead have players who are, well, decent. Ted Ginn Jr. is a work in progress. Greg Camarillo, coming off knee surgery, is solid and efficient. Davone Bess will see plenty of snaps. Still, this position looms as the team’s biggest source of concern.

  215. Garret July 15, 2009 1:01 pm

The Browns are following their plan to sign their late-round draft picks first, so David Veikune’s agent has been waiting for the start of negotiations. Thankfully, it seems like contract talks have started or will start soon.

Only 2 players drafted in the 2nd round have been signed so far, but the guy drafted right after Veikune was one of them. So, the numbers from his contract will probably help set the parameters for Veikune’s contract.

But the four players taken in the first and second rounds might not be signed prior to the club’s early July 24 reporting date for rookies, said one source.

Of the top four Browns picks, talks with linebacker David Veikune (second round) might be more advanced because agent Ken Zuckerman also represented Maiava.

Sources said there has been little or no contact so far between the Browns and the representatives of center Alex Mack (first), receiver Brian Robiskie (second) and receiver Mohamed Massoquoi (second).

Only two players chosen in the second round have been signed by their teams — New England cornerback Darius Butler (41st overall pick) and Philadelphia running back LeSean McCoy (53rd overall).

Mack was the 21st overall pick of the draft, Robiskie 36th, Massoquoi 50th, Veikune 52nd.

  217. Garret July 15, 2009 1:02 pm

Montreal is 2-0 and has been very efficient passing the ball–adding Chad Owens should make them even more dangerous. I’m glad that Owens is playing for a passing team with such an excellent QB…that should help his numbers and he’ll have a lot of chances to be noticed running after the catch.

Calvillo, who was second in the league last season with an impressive 5,633 yards passing and led the way with 43 touchdowns through the air, will have another threat at his disposal this weekend after Montreal acquired the services of wideout Chad Owens, a former standout with a potent offense at the University of Hawaii.

Calvillo and the Als are averaging just under 300 ypg through the air, completing three-quarters of their passing attempts and suffering just a single interception along the way.

  218. Garret July 15, 2009 1:05 pm

RGM’s coach (who is also the General Manager so he has complete control of the team) said that he was building the whole offense around RGM…but after just two games RGM is being benched. I hope that the benching is only for one game like he says, but if the former SJSU WR who is replacing him has a big game…

Grice-Mullen, who had key drops in both B.C. losses, stays on the roster but is being replaced in the starting lineup by Rufus Skillern.

As for the speedy Grice-Mullen, Buono said: “Our expectations of Ryan are high. We want him to be a big player for us. Right now, it’s a one-week thing. We want to put on the field players we have confidence in.”

  229. Willie July 15, 2009 2:47 pm

jm2375, good point on having to play both ways at HPA. I did not mean it as a switch in positions per se. There was a big recruiting battle between Oregon & UH for Unger. Oregon wanted Unger as a center and UH projected him at an all american/future NFL d-lineman. Unger chose Oregon & June Jones made a statement that he was making a big mistake being an 0-lineman, risking a possible NFL future as JJ saw him as a defensive star in both college and pro ranks.

No one will ever know how he would have been defensively. Was all Pac-10 center & 1st day draft choice that will hopefully be playing on Sundays as either a center or guard.

This is what I recall, hope someone else remembers.

Alas… another poor by-product of the internet blogging age.

Leonard Peters update! It would be awesome if he could play for the US rugby team.

USA 7s coach Al Caravelli is still looking for that crossover athlete to jump into his team. Many have found it isn’t easy – rugby is a mental game, too. The latest candidate has a little background to help him out – American Samoa-born, rugby trained college football hero Leonard Peters.

Peters played football at Kahuku High School and later the University of Hawaii, but during his formative years also had some rugby experience. Kahuku was coached by the legendary Livai Siuaki, who is now heavily involved in Hawaii rugby.

After being cut by the Bears he was contacted by Andy Katoa of the Aspen 7s team. Katoa had his own NFL shot in the 1990s and asked Peters if he wanted to return to rugby. Peters was highly enthusiastic.

Suddenly Caravelli has in his pool a hard-hitting defensive player with some basic rugby knowledge and a 4.43 time in the 40-yard dash.

Article the Browns’ outside LBs mentions David Veikune.

On paper, there’s a way you could spin it where you’re asking, “shouldn’t Veikune be the favorite to win the competition?” Second-round picks aren’t a longshot to start, and he’s competing against a veteran who isn’t elite and an unproven player in Hall, right?

Here is how I look at it — outside linebacker or a defensive end/linebacker hybrid was a position many of us felt the Browns were in desperate need of when the draft came around. And yet, with several big-name linebackers on the board in several instances, the Browns just passed right by them until their fourth pick in the draft. If Mangini felt he needed a starting linebacker for this season in the draft, wouldn’t that have been our No. 1 priority? Based on where Veikune was selected, I smell a one-two year developmental process before he becomes a starter.

What more can I add. In my post #53 “To who ever I offended I’m sorry”. I was contrite. But you..why the pot shots? Makes you feel good?

  304. wafan July 15, 2009 9:08 pm

    Slugger . . .

Thanks for the tip! The trick will be convincing Mom to try it. At the very least, the house will smell pepperminty (is that a word?) for a bit.

  305. koakane™ July 15, 2009 9:18 pm

  309. Ralph July 15, 2009 9:29 pm

thank you colt, the Hauula pop warner players will enjoy your gift and thanks to the NFL for the matching funds…

  310. Kekoa July 15, 2009 9:31 pm

Just to clarify a bit and not put too much pressure on Bulla or Lynn. Us guys were going to meet for coffee and a little breakfast anyway. Come what may, we will be there.

Bulla and Lynn are still in the process of moving into there new digs, so if it so happens that they are unable to make it, please understand this. We always have a good time enjoying a little fellowship and fuud at Nancy’s Kitchen.

Bulla will be announcing his plans for a luncheon cc, sometime very soon.

  311. Ralph July 15, 2009 9:31 pm

Koakane I asked several people if they were going, no one committed, game day decision. Please file a report, thank you. take a picture of coach Dana and you and put it on your facebook wall.

  312. Garret July 15, 2009 9:40 pm

Now it makes sense why Colt had to wait for word from the NFL before doing the donation. The way it was worded in a past blog it made it seem like Colt was waiting to get permission to donate money for the uniforms…but what he was waiting for was the matching funds to be processed by the NFL.

Kudos to Colt and the NFL for the uniforms for the Koolauloa Red Raiders!

  313. al July 15, 2009 9:47 pm

    i’m in.

  314. wafan July 15, 2009 9:48 pm

    Bravo to Colt!

  315. whitey July 15, 2009 9:52 pm

Garret, Goldman Sachs is an interesting story cause the company made $2 billion in profit and never paid income taxes on it and their boss was paid $43 million without paying income taxes too. And they needed a bailout???????????

  316. mana alohi July 15, 2009 9:54 pm

Colt, keep it up and you’ll be a shoo-in for guv when your playing days are over, for sure.

  317. d1島 July 15, 2009 9:55 pm

    Way to go Colt!

  318. d1島 July 15, 2009 9:58 pm

  326. Slugger July 15, 2009 10:17 pm

Colt is da man! What a heart! His parents raised him right.

I might have to go to Murphy’s tomorrow. Shoots, I wanted to go the Aquarium to listen to music. Hmmmm…

  339. myki July 15, 2009 10:40 pm

kk how are you enjoying your retirement? Don’t overdo it ! Take it slow and enjoy every minute of it.

Kekoa, glad to hear that Pops is home and doing well. Looking forward to seeing him on Saturday.

  340. PowderPuff July 15, 2009 10:41 pm

BIG “Kampai!” to Colt for his donation to the Koolauloa Red Raiders. It’s easy to see why so many still have fond feelings for Colt.

Talk about “kampai,” His Majesty, Emperor Akihito did a toast tonight and everyone in the house had sake in a shot-sized glass for the toast. I think there have been too many Tsaiko outings with CR shots lately…downed the “kampai” like a Tsaiko CR shot. 🙂

  341. al July 15, 2009 10:42 pm

whitey, duffer….thanks. the food’s still tops at tiffany’s.

noticed how the young waitress was taken aback by what we all consumed tonight. (burp)
