UH, Wade agree to 5-year deal

wade

Charlie Wade will receive a five-year contract to serve as the Warriors’ head volleyball coach.
The deal is worth more than $100,000 annually in base pay.
Because the deal falls within the position’s current salary range, the appointment only needs approval from UH president David McClain and Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw.
Wade succeeds MIke Wilton, who is retiring from the UH system after 17 seasons as the Warriors’ head coach. Wilton’s contract runs through June 30. He begins his job as the assistant coach for the Brigham Young women’s volleyball team July 1.
Wade officially starts June 15 as UH’s head coach.
Wade had an impressive in-person interview Wednesday, earning the widespread praise — and recommendation — from the six-member selection committee. AD Jim Donovan also attended the sessions, but did not take part in the post-interview discussions among committee members.
Wade was a long-time assistant under Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji. He currently is Pacific’s head coach.
Wade’s wife is from Hawai‘i, his children were born here, and he still owns a home in Kailua.
Tino Reyes, Mike Sealy and Scott Wong were the other finalists.

    Congratulations to Mr. Wade.

  2. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:06 am

It appears congratulations are in order.

  7. Jason May 22, 2009 12:20 am

    Congratulations Charlie!

Blah for the baseball Bows. That was hard. I did not sit around for nearly 12 hours at Les Murakami Stadium for THAT.

Well, see everyone at 11:00. Don’t be a stranger, come join us in upper section A.

  8. PowderPuff May 22, 2009 12:21 am

Still smarting from that bitter loss tonight. ARGH! Got some photos of Stretch and Karl Benson in the same shot…how ’bout that? Congratulations to Charlie Wade and his ohana.

  9. Long Time UH Fan May 22, 2009 12:24 am

Was hoping the BaseBows would hang on for the W but it was not to be. That one really hurt!

    Anyway, Go Bows! @ 11 a.m.

  10. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:24 am

I’m sorta ticked that UH is announcing it this morning.
First, Saturday readership and Friday evening viewership are the lowest.
Second, I’m going jet-skiing with my kid.

  11. Long Time UH Fan May 22, 2009 12:25 am

    Congrats to Mr. Wade!

  12. Jason May 22, 2009 12:26 am

Yeah, I don’t understand that either. You never announce anything of importance on a Friday. I learned that from The West Wing. 😀

  13. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:27 am

I guess that disproves the theory that Stretch and Karl Benson are the same person.

  14. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:29 am

Well, you’re supposed to announce bad news on a Friday.

  15. Jason May 22, 2009 12:33 am

Hence, “Take Out the Trash Day.” 😀

During the 11 a.m. game, I saw Karl Benson and John McNamara standing a few feet away from me. I had to control myself …

  16. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 22, 2009 12:33 am

Mahalo, Coach Wilton – and you DID win that National Championship… harrrumph.

Nitey nite and Sweet Warrior Dreams!

  17. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:34 am

And the big question: How did PowderPuff mix her kakimochi?

  18. PowderPuff May 22, 2009 12:36 am

No snacks tonight…just beverages. Thank goodness because we had to dull the pain. I’m trying to upload the pictures of Stretch and Karl Benson onto FB, but one of them is kind of NC17-rated.

  19. Pride. May 22, 2009 12:36 am

    I guess Stretch is #1.

  20. Jason May 22, 2009 12:37 am

PowderPuff: Time for your math test … 😀

  21. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:37 am

Hey, somebody took PowderPuff’s FB photo of Stretch and stuck it on the blog.

  22. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:38 am

Hey, Jason, isn’t it great to stay up late without it involving studying?

  23. Jason May 22, 2009 12:45 am

It is great. But I think all the Sierra Mist I drank today has more to do with why I’m still up than anything else. Plus the ultra rich, decadent chocolate/peanut butter/marshmallow brownies that midori7 had tonight. One bite and I couldn’t have anymore! But yeah, I’m amped on sugar.

  24. J May 22, 2009 1:25 am

    Morning…

  25. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:30 am

st….now i understand what you were saying the other day about the real prize being the women’s hc and how it is easier to transition from being an in house hc to another. although, i must admit i kind of caught on at that point.

  26. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:32 am

do you think that charlie would want someone like mike sealy on his staff? of course with dave’s blessing of course.

  27. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 1:34 am

    I feel badly for Tino.
He’s a good guy and a good coach, and he would have won a lot in 2010.

  28. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 1:35 am

No. The No. 2 women’s job is better than the No. 2 men’s job.

  29. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:41 am

is hinshaw going to get involved in the women’s bb hc job?
    wasn’t she pushing for gross?

will there be a surprise guest tomw…the mysterious fifth candidate since cooper-dyke has bowed out? dana?

is cooper-dyke dropping out cause there may be more dirty laundry in the locker room at prairie view? i am not buying her “its taken too long” excuse.

will the best candidate win the job? bonvicini for example. or is she too high profile(salary)? wasn’t there some whispers that vinnie is pushing for her hire?

is wolfe the token local boy candidate?
    where does harrington fit in?

logically, it would seem that hiring bonvicini makes sense. what with her experience, ability to recruit, and she is a proven speaker she also satisfies many gender issues on the lower campus. but, that fifth possible candidate just keeps throwing a monkey wrench into the wash that we can’t refute.

ah. life between the upper and lower campus never ceases to amaze in the lush valley of manoa.

    can i say…….
    …nuff said.

  30. addahknowjoe May 22, 2009 1:42 am

    Alright!

Who squealed like an Anunenue student flushed with a fresh case of Swine Flu about Charlie Wade?

Rob25- At 11:25 we were still at Zippy’s. No was us!

  31. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:44 am

but, being no. 2 for the men’s could be a great position when dave does retire and charlie becomes the no. 1 women’s mentor. going from no.2 to no. 1 could happen for the right guy at the right time.

and yeah, do you think charlie would offer tino? or has he a staff in mind already?

  32. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:45 am

ajoe…i could hear you from my house.
and it was kekaula at 10:23 pm.

  33. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 1:49 am

Well, No. 2 didn’t become No. 1 for this men’s coaching opening.

  34. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:53 am

yup….but it did for mack and nash. that is why i am saying, “could happen for the right guy at the right time.”

  35. al ™ May 22, 2009 1:55 am

unfortunately for tino the past two seasons painted a program on the down swing, thus, guilt by association syndrome is in affect.

had wilton left, say, after the national championship, tino would have sailed through and be the head coach.

  36. wafan May 22, 2009 2:08 am

    beautiful Aloha Friday everyone!

Regular time for me. Just logged in earlier this morning.

  39. wafan May 22, 2009 2:40 am

Somehow my aloha shirt got stretched out a bit. If I could only get the rest of my clothes to do the same.

  40. wafan May 22, 2009 2:42 am

    Finally! Congratulations Coach Wade!!!

  41. oldie May 22, 2009 2:51 am

Too bad the BaseBows weren’t able to pull it out. So close and yet…

Thanks to LizK for the updates.

I hope their pride won’t let them go two and out. Not in our house!

    Good luck, BaseBows!

  42. mcTruck May 22, 2009 4:12 am

Maybe if the rest of the UH-sports teams were to transition to being called warriors instead of rainbows, maybe then they’d win games their supposed to win???…just a thought.

  43. chawan_cut May 22, 2009 4:49 am

can someone ask karl benson about my balloons again for basketball? i already talked to him once but i’m wondering if the wac will ease up on all these rules about indoor sports. they’ve seriously cut out the fun factor in going to basketball games.

  44. Stretch May 22, 2009 5:04 am

    good morning tsaikos!!

ST should feel thankful that I haven’t called him up yet to take that damn picture off.

  45. djmitcho May 22, 2009 5:05 am

Good Morning Everybody! TGIF! Hope everyone has a great Friday!

  46. d1島 May 22, 2009 5:36 am

    Great Morning All!

Gotta hope for a quick rebound for the BaseBows….of course, that would be a huge bounce from a deep low but gotta go in with a “Can Do” attitude!
If you can make it out to the Les, be there!

  47. d1島 May 22, 2009 5:37 am

I’m looking at PP’s photo album and thinking, “Why would Stephen boost the pic of Colt?”

Happy Friday! Start of a long weekend. 😀

Congrats to Charlie Wade. Welcome back to Hawaii and UH.

Good luck to the Bows. Gotta win today to keep up hopes of extending the season.

  52. Garret May 22, 2009 6:15 am

Congratulations to Coach Wade! I’m sure that he’ll do a great job and his team looks like it has a lot of talent for next season.

  53. Garret May 22, 2009 6:17 am

I wish that some local paper (hint, hint) could put together a database like this for UH football players.

    Ohio State football
    Player database, 1890-2008

Search a database of nearly 3,000 football players at Ohio State. Find out which players were letter-winners, All-Americans, All-Big Ten, academic All-Americans, academic All-Big Ten and captains.

  54. Annoddah Dave May 22, 2009 6:20 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Say, was that a one finger salute Stretch was giving Benson???

  55. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 6:22 am

I think it would be good if a recent but unemployed college graduate with a math degree (hint, hint) created such a data base.

  56. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 6:22 am

I thought Stretch was saying that the WAC is No. 1.

  57. jm2375 May 22, 2009 6:25 am

so, what happened to the pikcha?

  58. Stretch May 22, 2009 6:29 am

    Mahalo ST!!

I think the comment about how the umpire last night was just as bad as the WAC football referees must have ruffled a few feathers of the people on the box since right after that, we had an “observer” standing behind us for a little while.

  59. Kekoa May 22, 2009 6:30 am

    d1島: See ya there…

Jason: If you need a ride, let me know.

Stretch: Did you have a chance to ‘voice’ your opinions loud enuff to drive Benson Bonzo?

  60. el guapo May 22, 2009 6:37 am

I hate this 6-team elimination format. Always have trouble remembering where the #1 seed comes back into the loser’s bracket if Fresno beats SJSU.

WTH am I doing up so early?

    Stretch,

    No doubt.

Anything you want us to pass along to the WACommish today?

  68. lakesidegt May 22, 2009 7:26 am

Note to Jim Donavan – spend a few bucks and open the top exit. I was there last night with hundreds/thousands of other drivers trying to get out of the parking lot after the baseball game. All of us were in line for another half hour or so because the top exit of the parking structure was not manned. What a way to end the night!

Also, when cars are entering the quarry – big signs indicating parking ticket booths are manned or not manned – this will help avoid unneeded ques; and on the other hand, this may prevent people zipping up to the front of one line and “cutting in the line” that others have been patiently waiting in.

OK, in 15 minutes it will be official: Wade will get a five-year deal.

  79. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 8:09 am

J-boy and Kevin Fujii are rugged bowboyz and u have to be proud of them if u r homegrown. Fujii is one tough kepane for sure. Luv this kid. He has made one huge, step-up.

Many thoughts run through my head about last nite but to keep it in perspective for those of u that know baseball–our hitters got behind in the pitch count and become victims.
We pitched well last nite and our hitters stranded more runners on the bases than the Brits left on the beaches of Dunkirk. Three times the inning ended with the bases loaded.
I thought Coach Ko and Trap were trying to make it happen on the basepaths and in the hit-and-run department, but bottomline, if you get 2 strikes on you, the LaT pitchers will tool you.
It was a demoralizing loss and Im Ok with with our boyz.
I like this year’s team, no matter.
That is a rare statement indeed, for those that know me.

Topped of the night with la capa and friends at the Monkey Bar and it was kickin on THURS.
So, I did my deed for the night and all is well that ends well.
    Ciao.

  80. Garret May 22, 2009 8:20 am

NMSU is changing their helmet–it seems like they have had a lot of helmet designs, as each coach tries something different.

The New Mexico State football team will sport a newly designed football helmet in 2009, as head coach DeWayne Walker has moved back to the all crimson helmet, which will feature the NM State logo on the side. The helmet will feature a white face mask. Also on the back of the helmet will be the logo of the 2nd Engineer Battalion out of White Sands, as the Aggies honor the battalion for their service to our country.

  81. vballfan1 May 22, 2009 8:44 am

Yay coach Wade. With all the incoming and returning talent the warriors are bringing. I think I smell 2010 MPSF coach of the year.

What are the chances that Scotty Wong will be his assistant?

  82. Diogenes Sinope May 22, 2009 8:46 am

    Go Michelle!!!

  83. d1島 May 22, 2009 8:47 am

    One ticket left!

    Heading out to UH soon…..

    Go Basebows!

  84. Dirty Commish May 22, 2009 8:48 am

So… Sig Hansen didn’t get the gig??? BAH!

Well, good luck to Mr. Wade. Commish hopes for good things to come. Heartbreaker for the Basebows. Was listening on the radio coming home from the gym up until the 7th inning and could sense that their luck would only hold up so long.

In the pros, NBA semi-finals turning out some great games, and this is coming from a non-basketball fan. Wow. Nobody at the gym was actually working out because everyone’s eyes were glued to the TV sets.

    TGIF! Long weekend! Hooah!

  85. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 9:14 am

Congradulations Coach Wade and welcome home to you & family. Best wishes and much success.

    Congratulations to Charlie Wade…

I’m glad the Men’s Volleyball Coach position has been settled. They were all great finalists. Too bad only one could be head coach. Let’s go bring home the national championship!!!

  88. XxFaithxX May 22, 2009 9:44 am

Congrats to Coach Wade…I feel that UH Men’s Volleyball needs a coach that wears his/her emotions on their sleeves…counteracts the laid-back lifestyle…

Last-nite, Trap left his pitchers in too long IMHO….its a tourney Trap, get the win and ride it…no sense saving arms…keeping a LHP in vs. right-handed hitter with the tying run on 2nd…ouch.

  89. madeinhawaii May 22, 2009 9:45 am

Now.. erm… ah.. maybe they can settle the Women’s BB Coach dilemna.

  90. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 9:46 am

Just a cursory thought about Coach Mike’s rollover.

Unless Jim Donovan has a certain former Kalani alumnus in mind, Im OK with Mike Trapasso. I dont trust slection committees to pick a baseball coach.

Coach Trapasso has shown growth and his current depth in the pitching department bodes well for the future.
He is a solid pitching coach.
I would like to see more local boyz on the roster and Im sure with Kolt’s success and the inspiring play of Kramer and Kevin Fujii we will see more in the future.
Hitting is still a problem and we need a h-coach like Kolt’s dad Kaha.
Kolt is aggressive at the plate, a first pitch swinger, yet has the lowest KO ratio.
His KO to BB ratio is at 1.0, truly a mark of a good hitter. He puts the ball in play and constantly is re-tooling his swing. I dont see that consistency with the rest of our batters with a few exceptions. I do see alot of ball topping and you wont hit linedrives consistently with those swings.
Smallball is OK, but not to the point of being predictable.
You cant bunt your way to a WAC championship.

LaT beat us on 2 HRs and their bunts produced zero runs.
    This conference bangs! Period.

  91. Kazz May 22, 2009 9:46 am

Last night, Koa Anuenue “big wig” Vince Baldemore and some other UH folk were sitting in the row behind me and my friends. They were getting a bit “rowdy” at times…

Well not really, but the couple three seats away from us to the left seemed “annoyed” at the amount of talking they were doing.

Lord forbid people converse during a baseball game… 🙄

  92. Kazz May 22, 2009 9:48 am

We have a Michelle on the baseball team?

    Hmmm… must be French.

    WELCOME “HOME” CHARLIE!!!!!

  96. Kazz May 22, 2009 9:56 am

    A-Joe,

I was frozen in my seat until the BaseBOWS walked back to the dugout. Couldn’t help but give them a hand afterwards. So sad to see the disgusted look on their faces. Sometimes the best of us can forget that the players feel is 808% WORSE than the fans when they lose a game like that.

Afterwards I found out that the banners they had hanging out in the front of Murakami Stadium are not easily flammable, especially the LaTech one… or the Fresno State one… 😆

    😆

    😆

    Madness is a talent. 😈

  97. (Jesse)James May 22, 2009 9:59 am

Kazz…see if you can get those banners…than we can have a torch lighting ceremony at the next T-gate…MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  98. Kazz May 22, 2009 10:01 am

    Chicken-skin moment of the night:

When Kevin Fujii “blocked off” home plate to close the inning in the 6th or 8th (can’t remember).

The crowd was GREAT last night. For people that are able to come to games, BUT PREFER to stay at home they will never realize that there is no amount of “HD” that can truly capture the essence of being there LIVE.

  99. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 10:13 am

Keep in mind when discussing hitting we are talking at the college level which is akin to A-ball or instructional league…and they use the silver bats.
At this level you learn to make contact with different pitches and to recognize when to adjust your swing depending on pitch location. Later as you develop as a hitter you learn to be more selective and work the count to your favor. As the level of competition rises the pitching gets better.
Thus, at this level, I like to see more aggressive hitting becz the pitchers are fighting control and are more predictable early in the pitch count.

It just knaws at me to see a first pitch fastball split the middle of the plate without an attempt to swing.

  100. al May 22, 2009 10:16 am

fujii played well as he has all his life. always known as tough player with great instincts. he is never out of the game mentally whether it be on defense or on the bases or at the plate.

nice to see him get his due.

  101. al May 22, 2009 10:23 am

wf2….especially with your #3 batter. that one he looked at was right down the pipe.

i hope he wasn’t given the take sign.
many times the batter has the advantage but we are not using it to our advantage. i hope it is not the coaching philosophy.

one glaring notice. if you look at the rosters of utah v., la tech, and some of these teams that can hit, there average player is at least 4-5 inches taller and 20-25 lbs heavier. that equates to more power and if they can hit for average look out.

last night the pitchers did well. spangler to his credit was going on 3+ innings, he made one mistake and it cost him. i would have yanked him after the leadoff batter got on and gone righty – righty with ewing.

    oh well……….

  102. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 10:27 am

Nevada and Hawaii are teams playing with the same low-esteem image.
Both are cousins to WAC teams in which they have dropped 5 consecutive games.
Both are trying to pull out of late season nose-dives.
So, both Hawaii and Nevada will be scratchin like alley kats in their 11 am encounter today and the loser says,
    A-lo-ha means adios!

It will be a great one, be there, watch with Pops n uncle Pal or tune in and listen to the venerable Mr. Robbs….it’s a great way to begin a long week-end….enjoy and
    Go! bowboyz!!

  103. Kazz May 22, 2009 10:35 am

I might get some crap for this, but I must say, the tides really turned in the game last night when Midori came by and offered brownies to me and my friends…

The brownies must have been too ono that the collective MOJO from a few of us went off track because the brain was on a sugar rush!!! 😆

  104. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 10:36 am

al, u r right and i didnt want to critize any one player or coach, but suffice it to say, LaT’s coach outsmarted UH.
Our lineup is loaded with batters from the leftside and he brought in his southpaws at crucial moments and they were able to sneak their FB in on the first pitch as we were lookin at hit n run opportunities and wanting to get deep into the pitch count to play games. It backfired with Fujii on base and Morford, a hot hitter, taking pitches or swinging at bad pitches to protect the runner.

  105. Ralph May 22, 2009 10:42 am

when our players do swing, they are trying to pull everything thrown to them, none of them seem to go with the pitch and hit it to the opposite field…LaTech went opposite field often…even in the prior game, Fresno and New Mex St hit opposite field…tough to pull an outside pitch

  106. Ralph May 22, 2009 10:44 am

Congratulations Charlie Wade! bring in assistants who can recruit as well as teach the fine points of vb..let’s change the image of UH, no longer the shortest team with great vb IQ, we need size and power..

  107. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 10:46 am

Vinnie needs to graduate, get the palapala to fall back on and play another season at the LES.
His future is not at 3B and although uncle Pal has indicated he would recommend him for the draft I would be surprised to see him selected low enuff to motivate him $$-wise leave.
We shall see, I would luv to see my cuzz return along with McD.
    That would be awesome.

  108. Ralph May 22, 2009 10:49 am

Vinnie has been struggling at the plate in the last few series, he just needs to relax and not press, the hits will fall just keep on swinging

  109. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 22, 2009 10:53 am

    LET’S GO, BOWS!!!

  110. da princess' classmate May 22, 2009 10:58 am

a lineup in 2010 w/ vinnie, kmac, kolten, and Coach Almadova’s boy would be pretty nice. we’ll see what this june draft does to those pipe dreams…

  111. kama krab May 22, 2009 11:00 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Al I gotta agree with you. The boyz are taking themselves out of the at bat each time they look at first pitch strikes going down the middle. I feel that in order to be in an at bat the whole way you must be aggresive from the first pitch thus not taking any pitches that are hittable pitches. I feel that even if a pitcher is struggling to find the strike zone, as a hitter you must come up to bat looking to get a hit and once you come up to bat looking to take pitches you are already out of the at bat.

These boyz in my opinion need to be way more aggressive then they have shown in the past couple of games and forget the mind set of taking pitches. They need to go up there like Kolten Wong and put some good aggresive swing to these pitches.

It just fustrates the heck out of me when the batters are up there and it is three pitches and out. They really need to start going back to fundamentals, when it is see the ball hit the ball. The boyz are making this saying look really hard to do and it is a shame.

  112. kama krab May 22, 2009 11:06 am

I think Vinnie should stay for his senior year. As I see it right now, he is not ready for the big show and right about now, he is not even ready for Class-A. He needs to learn how to go opposite feild with his hits and also needs to work on his ability to adjust during an at bat. As I see it, Vinnie does none of this consistently enough to even merit a high draft pick. I think that one more year under his belt would do him much good.

  113. kama krab May 22, 2009 11:15 am

You no as I thinking of it, the whole team has trouble adjusting during an at bat. They do not adjust themselves in the batters box, they do not choke up on there bats during certain counts, they do not adjust there eye level, they do nothing to combat the pitching. In my time as a player we where always thought to adjust before, during, and after each at bat. While in the batters box you study the pitchers tendencies and his angle of release. You come up with a plan of attack, so that once you get into the batters box you know what you are looking to hit and where. You also must look at your fielders after every pitch to see what they are doing because most of the time the way they are set up is the way a pitcher is going to pitch you during the at bat.

These are just some of the simple stufff that I do not see utilized during a U.H. baseball game. It is things as simple as this that can help be ahead of the pitcher and thus help you to get hits. JMHO

  114. kama krab May 22, 2009 11:17 am

    Sorry,

While in the batters box=While in the on deck circle

  115. letsgowarriors May 22, 2009 11:29 am

ill be really excited if we can land carmichael, i think he can turn out to be a Kurt Suzuki-type catcher for UH.

  116. Kazz May 22, 2009 11:32 am

    ST,

How was the mood at UH today with the official announcement of Charlie Wade as the new man in charge?

I can imagine the players must be excited. Did Coach Wade get a chance to meet his new players before he left?

This alone will draw another 400 (at least) to the Stanley for the first home game of the season.

I think if they can get to the MPSF playoffs this season and continue to roll, it will be no time before Warrior Volleyball joins Wahine Volleyball and Warrior Football as the money makers for UH!!!

THERE IS OPTIMISM AND IT’S HARD TO DENY IT!!!

  117. letsgowarriors May 22, 2009 11:40 am

who has more range? kolten or almadova?

i know im getting a little ahead of myself, but w/ these 2, i think they can be the building blocks for UH’s future success.

building out strength through the middle in future years, hopefully w/ carmichael at catcher, kitamura at SS, and KW in center w/ BA flanking him somewhere. sounds good to me, pending the draft of course…

  121. PONO May 22, 2009 12:03 pm

I’m not familiar with Carmichael, can someone shine more light on this prospect. I know Kitamura is a good catch and has more upside as he fills out. Comes from a great family line as his uncle was an All American and his dad is a fine coach.

  122. Garret May 22, 2009 12:07 pm

David Veikune made this list of rookies who have already impressed their NFL teams.

David Veikune, ILB, Cleveland Browns: Like Orakpo, Veikune is making the transition from defensive end to linebacker with Cleveland. Unlike Orakpo, however, Veikune was asked to move to the inside linebacker position — a transition he showcased surprising comfort with during rookie camp May 1-3. Veikune showed better-than-advertised agility at the position and impressed coaches with his instincts and understanding of the defense in his first days at the position.

  123. Garret May 22, 2009 12:07 pm

Jeff Ulbrich had a good reason for missing practice yesterday.

Linebacker Jeff Ulbrich missed yesterday’s session because he’s going to school at San Jose State and was finishing a final in Social Problems.

  124. letsgowarriors May 22, 2009 12:08 pm

idk kitamura is already pretty thick. he does have good height though, so he might fill out a bit more. he needs to work on his hitting to succeed at D1.

carmichael is only a JR at kapalama. verbally committed to hawaii a month ago. he is a good hitting catcher with some pop. i think his arm is strong and quick enough to keep runners honest.

  125. Garret May 22, 2009 12:08 pm

I really enjoyed reading this feature article on Ulbrich. 10 years with the NFL team he grew up cheering for is an amazing accomplishment!

As a kid growing up in nearby Morgan Hill, Jeff Ulbrich idolized the 49ers defensive units of the 80s and 90s with linebackers like Hacksaw Reynolds, Matt Millen and his favorite player of all, Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott.

Wishing to follow in their footsteps, he played at the University of Hawaii to pursue his dream of playing professional football and soon after, he was selected in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the late Bill Walsh, the team’s vice president and general manager at the time.

Presently, he’s coming into his tenth season with his beloved 49ers and will soon earn a spot at the conclusion of the ’09 season amongst the players he grew up idolizing, as a member of the 49ers 10-Year Wall.

  126. Garret May 22, 2009 12:09 pm

The 49ers special teams coach praised Ulbrich. Ulbrich’s role on special teams is a great way for him to extend his career.

“For a guy to be going into his tenth season with the same team, going through free agency with him making the decision to stay and for the Niners to keep him is a great tribute to him,” 49ers special teams coordinator Al Everest said. “He is what football is all about. He prepares well, he has fun, and he’s a great learner. He learns his techniques and plays with those techniques. He knows his assignments and has fun doing it. He’s a real pleasure to coach.”

Everest has had no problem relying on Ulbrich over the last few seasons to be a standout on his special teams units. Last season after he started the first two games on defense, Ulbrich was a starter on five of the 49ers special teams units and was named “Top Gun,” an honor bestowed upon the Most Valuable Player on special teams.

  127. A-House May 22, 2009 12:10 pm

    Congrats to Coach Wade!!

    Welcome home!

  128. Garret May 22, 2009 12:10 pm

I’m impressed that Ulbrich could pass the 500 tackle mark this season…500 tackles in the NFL is a great milestone!

“I think when coach Al (Everest) came here, he breathed new life into me and it has just been a blast playing for him,” Ulbrich said. “Some guys unfortunately look at special teams as an after-thought, but he keeps it competitive with the Top Gun award. He also demands that you play with the same sort of fire and competitiveness as a special teamer as you would play at offensive and defensive positions.”

Prior to being a standout on Everest’s units, Ulbrich had a number of responsibilities over the past nine seasons and has totaled 486 tackles (357 solo), 5.5 sacks and two interceptions as a starter and as a key figure on special teams.

“My role has definitely changed,” he said with a content look on his face. “When I came in I was just a first and second-down inside backer – a run ‘backer. And then that progressed into becoming an every down ‘backer.

“Then I became just a third-down backer, suddenly I turned into a cover guy,” he said sarcastically. “From there, I transitioned to a special teams guy. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I’ve enjoyed every role that I’ve been given.”

Ulbrich excelled with each role bestowed upon him.

  129. Garret May 22, 2009 12:11 pm

Ulbrich does some MMA training in the offseason.

Besides using the 49ers offseason program to keep his body in top shape which has been a big factor in his longevity, Ulbrich has been doing specialized training at Train For Life, a gym in Morgan Hill owned and operated by his friends.

At TFL, Ulbrich is able to have fun with one of his other passions, mixed martial arts.

“I’m a huge fan and I was always into wrestling growing up,” he said of his love of MMA. “You can only do so many 40-yard dashes and so many linebacker drops. MMA training is just a way to stay in shape and keep things interesting. At TFL, we do some MMA stuff, we do judo and wrestling and they have the old-school training which I’m a big fan of. They do the tractor tire flipping and some work with sledgehammers.”

I was very disappointed when someone on the selection committee said that cetrain “kalani grad” was ineligible because he did not have a college degree.

How stupid can you be!!! All they had to do was give him credit for all his 15 years in the “bigs” and coaching experience as an “off-set” to the degree. I would have fought for a complete swap or at the very least allow him XX years do get the degree – don’t remember how many credits he lacked, but it was not very many.

I still would like to see him as HC for Rainbow BB. It would be nice to see Mike Lum as the hitting coach. Now, how could he round out his staff for a pitching coach, local boy, who has major league experience?

That would be a strong staff!!!

my short and long term memory is taking a beating!! anyone kind enough to post a list for guys like me? us old timers, and I do not speak for all, need constant reminders of who, what, where, when, how.

wonder the impact on commits and those uncommited to continue to see the names of committed players being in the sports section during league play and tournaments – would it be a “good time feeling”? – I think so – continue to give recognition does not cost a penny, but it can have dramatic positive effects for the program.

perhaps an interview with Kolton, after the season, to discuss his decison to play for UH rather than turn pro out of high school can impact players who are committed, but drafted in June.

  181. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 2:21 pm

We have hitting issues….we have a lineup with 5 hitters batting from the left-side. Naturally our opponents are throwing southpaws and they are dropping charlie-balls which break away from our left swinging batters.
By this time of the season our boyz shouldnt be looking at curves like a deer caught looking into the headlights….but they do.
Our pitching is holding out and except for a some bad throwing decisions we have performed well on the diamond.

Coach Mike is going to have to do something in the future about hitting instruction–coaching can make a difference even with average hitters.

Nevada is not a good hitting team and as the tournament continues to go deeper, pitchers become scarce, its quality diminishes, games will turn on hitting…. so, we will have to score more runs to remain competitive.

  182. kama krab May 22, 2009 2:35 pm

    wf2,

    Totally agree with 183.

First of all we do have to many left hand batters in the line up. This has been a problem because these left hand batters have a hard time hitting left handed pitchers. They are swinging against lefties not to hit the ball but to start a new dance move at the batters box. They need to learn how to stay in there and go the other way with the ball. This is the only way they are going to succeed against left handed pitchers.

  183. Rob25 May 22, 2009 2:38 pm

    Congratulations to Charlie Wade!

Thanks to Robert Kekaula for the breaking news last night!!

wf2….we are hampered by having two pitching coaches, a former shortsop instructing outfielders, a former catcher not known for his bat coaching the catchers and batting.

    egads.

  189. Curt May 22, 2009 3:03 pm

Can’t wait to see what we do for our next big hire (for wahine BB). Bonvicini appears to have the highest profile. Anybody know what happened with her last job at Arizona State?

  190. al May 22, 2009 3:04 pm

maybe they are drinking that old quarry water….?

i wonder if some folks know that kaha still plays aja ball?
and is still tearing it up?

    break’s over…back to work.

  191. whitey May 22, 2009 3:09 pm

congrats to Coach Wade and the bb team for their win.

  192. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 3:11 pm

I know this goes against Hawaii genetics, but root for the fresnecks, the sparts go deep in pitching and if they lose, will need to play an extra game like Haw to take the T. having one loss in the winners bracket makes this T wide open….saying that, Sparts did not score in top of 1, 0-0, bottom 1, fresnecks batting.

  193. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 3:17 pm

Bonvicini got dumped in-season and her last payday was in MARCH. She goes through assistants like Elizabeth Taylor went through hubbies. A real gem that doesnt bend like bamboo–her better dayz were when Reagan was President and Obama was a community organizer.

  194. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 3:25 pm

SJSU 1 FSU 0, sparts clutch hit and score a run with 2 hits after 2 outs in 2nd. bottom 2.

  195. kama krab May 22, 2009 3:29 pm

If Fresno doesn’t win then Hawaii must go 4 games in two days to win the tournament. If Fresno win’s then it gets alot easier because everyone has one loss.

    We’ll see.

  196. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 3:38 pm

If SJSU wins hawaii will have to 5-6 games to win.

  197. Curt May 22, 2009 3:39 pm

    warriorfanny2,

Thanks for the info. You so funny.

  198. kama krab May 22, 2009 3:46 pm

    wf2,

I think that’s a bit to much games for them to playing when the tournament ends on Sunday.

I said what I said in 197 based on CRW’s braket that he had posted.

It’s kind of a funny braket but like I said if Fresno can post a win it will get alot better for the Bowz.

  199. kama krab May 22, 2009 3:48 pm

my couz Vinnie hit his HR 16 hours too late–last nite the diletantes had 15 floribunda roses to toss to Signore Catricala as he circled the loop…..shucks, his loss was my gain, I slept with the roses last nite 🙂

  206. madeinhawaii May 22, 2009 4:21 pm

Bonvicini went through a extremely low period in her life when her All-American star players, Shawntinice Polk, was misdiagnosed and died as a result of that misdiagnosis — Shawntinice died from a lung clot in 2005.

That was followed by disciplinary suspensions of several key players and the departure of 7 assistants in the past four years that really hurt her team’s peformance (some because of the atmosphere following Shawntinice’s death, and the rest as a matter of normal attrition.). The last one to leave was one that had stuck besides her for many many years.

A change of scenery may be all that Bonvicini needs to get back to her winning ways. As a long-time friend of Vince Goo, she comes with his blessings, I’m sure.

We have always prided ourselves as a place for second chances and for healing. Maybe it’s time to give a good coach like Bonvicini that second change and embrace her with a warm aloha and healing touch.

  207. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 4:23 pm

All WAC fresnecks, Robinson and Mendonca go yard in bottom 6.
    FSU 4 SJSU 3.

  208. madeinhawaii May 22, 2009 4:25 pm

Bonvicini has always been a strict on academics and rules. As a result, she suspended a number of key players including one on indefinite suspension that just so happens to be a twin of another key player on the team. These suspensions and recent losing seasons have seen her popularity drop with fans and possibly some ex-assistant coaches.

I kind of see her as the other sex mirror image of Vince Goo and I believe she can take our Wahine program to where it was and possibly more.

  209. Committed Road Warrior May 22, 2009 4:28 pm

So if I’m reading the tournament bracket correctly:

If SJSU beats Fresno, UH will play the loser of tonight’s game between La Tech and NMSU. Fresno would be eliminated.

If Fresno beats SJSU, UH will play Fresno in what would be an elimination game.

Which opponent would you like to see?

  210. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 4:32 pm

Our basketball program is on life support and another heart attack will be fatal. Im for saving the program.
We gave MAC, Nash first chances. We gave Bolla a rebirth.
It’s time to get serious about saving ourselves–select someone that is solid, not shaky; select someone that is rising, not falling; select someone that doesnt bring baggage we are ill-equiped to handle. We have used up our nine lives.

  211. madeinhawaii May 22, 2009 4:35 pm

What I wrote sometime back in the SH forum.

I’ve been doing some reading of old articles and maybe.. just maybe along with the death of Polk (Sept. 2006), there were a number of bad recruits. Kaylee (the recruiting coach) left just before Joan was fired. The number of suspensions and transfers seem to point to disciplinary problems with players. Half of set of twins that were supposed to make a huge impact on the team was suspended for a year. You know that’s going to cause some discord. The sister and a friend were suspended from the final tournament game when they walked out of a meeting because Bonvicini announced that the till then suspended twin was not going on the trip to the tournament.

When you have a successful program you know your assistant coaches will be lured away, and her staff was no exception but the death of Polk and suspension on players accelerated that, as well.

Regardless of her loss records in the last three years at Az, with a 287-223 record, she was still their winningest coach ever. So that tells you a little more about the Az program, as well.

Bonvicini holds a career mark of 612-294 as a head coach. This is on par with Vince Goo. She staunch in disciplining and generous when praise is due. I believe that with the right atmosphere and recruiting team, she could do wonders for UH.

  212. Kekoa (iPhone) May 22, 2009 4:37 pm

Top 7 and dogs lead 4 to 3, but SJ has loaded da bases!

  213. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 4:43 pm

CRW, we play the loser tomorrow at 3pm betw NMSU and LaT ( I would rather play NMSU). If we win, we play the loser among 4 teams at 7pm…and at that point it doesnt matter.
If we dont hit we are gone. 4 games deep into T-play and pitching is as rare as a $2 beer.
    FSU (h) 4 SJSU (v) 3, bottom 7, 2 outs, none on.

  214. Kekoa (iPhone) May 22, 2009 4:45 pm

Mr C – are they evacuating Kapolei? Chem spill at Campbell park is what I heard!

  215. Jason May 22, 2009 4:47 pm

warriorfanny2: No, CRW is right. We face Fresno State if they win; otherwise, we face the loser of NMSU and LaTech. What you are describing will only happen if Fresno State loses (and thus, is eliminated). Then there will be four teams entering tomorrow. If Fresno State survives, then you look at the alternate brackets.

Yes, it is quite confusing. We spent quite a while to figure it out at today’s game. You need a Ph.D. in quantum physics to figure this thing out.

  216. curveball May 22, 2009 4:50 pm

  217. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 4:51 pm

It’s good when Fresno State looses in ANY thing.

Time for UH fans to worry about da BOWS and nobody else. If we’re good enough, we’ll beat whoever may come.

CRW, assuming we w tomorrow, we play a DH SUN if an undefeated team or 3 teams advance.

If an undefeated team enters SUN we still need to win two.
Either way we need to play 5 games to win this 4-day T.
But no team will have a one game-less advantage.

  239. d1島 May 22, 2009 5:58 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Thanks for the info on Bonvicini. She’ll bounce back somewhere…maybe here even. It’ll be interesting to see who we select for the wahine BB head coach. One thing for sure, the 2009 recruiting took a big hit.

  251. A-House May 22, 2009 7:22 pm

anyone, who has the UH wahine BB team recruited for 2009?

are there any ex-hawaii players on the mainland or already in Hawaii ready to play for the “home team”?

for whatever reason, I’m totally out of it when in comes for 2009 recruits for BB or VB or Baseball.

I, for one, would like to see the SID’s office take a higher interest in publicizing other UH sports/winners. What is put out by that office to make people on the mainland or Hawaii or international interests seriously consider UH as a “prime” location to get an education and excel in a sport? or, are they soley focused on football? Mr. SID, care to comment and put me in my place? Am I missing something?

  252. warriorfanny2 May 22, 2009 7:34 pm

    aggies (h) hammerin LaT (v), 3-1, after 2.
NMSU has 6 hits in 2 innings.
One thing for sure–SJSU overwhelmed both teams this year. Sweeping LaT @ home and takin the series at NMS and scoring over 60 runs. Sparts will need to beat both teams tomorrow to advance to SUN.

  253. Curt May 22, 2009 7:36 pm

    Hi A-House,

How’s da mrs. doing? Regarding wahine BB recruiting, I don’t think anyone was signed this year. No coach, no players. Not good. Maybe Mrs A-House would like to play for the home team. She could play center as she’s a natural center of attention. I can see her defending those 6’3″ post players. 🙂

The only player I heard about was the Punahou twin who was playing for Idaho and was contemplating transferring to UH. Don’t know what the situation is now.

  254. madeinhawaii May 22, 2009 7:50 pm

  256. Curt May 22, 2009 8:13 pm

Thanks madeinhawaii. Hopefully, Shawna joins the wahine. Whatever the case, the new coach will have a challenging job to say the least. I hope we hire a good one.

Have you check Southwest Air? They have fares at $99 (web only) in a couple of weeks.

    D1,

Were you able to give away that ticket? See you guys there tomorrow.

    Night!

  276. Committed Road Warrior May 22, 2009 10:15 pm

    MeiLing:

Yep. Checked Southwest. I’ve got the hotel room booked, now I need the plane ticket booked.

The fare for my return date is within the $99 bracket, so I’ll likely book that right now. OTOH, the fare going there is higher at $138+ one-way since my departing date is now 13 days away, therefore the airline revenue management systems reverted to their 7-day advance fares, which are higher than the 14-day and 21-day advance fares.

I’m departing PHX for the Bay Area on June 5th, returning on the 7th. The only important stuff is on the morning of the 6th. The rest of my time up there is filler. Any suggestions?
