UH lands Kapa‘a lineman
Sean Michael Shigematsu, an offensive tackle who was impressive at last week’s All-Poly Camp, said he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
Shigematsu is 6 feet 5 and 230 pounds.
“I always wanted to be a Warrior,” said Shigematsu, who also plays volleyball and basketball.
His father, Delroy Shigematsu, was a standout multi-sport athete for Kapa‘a in the late 1970s.

Running back Chizzy Dimude has been on the run since arriving in town this week. He’s enrolled in Summer Session II, and is participating in the offseason conditioning program and 
unsupervised workouts. He’s even taking a yoga class (which Princess Leila will profile in a video tomorrow).
Dimude took a couple of minutes to talk story with the Warrior Beat.

“I came in Sunday. I slept the whole way on the flight. It was fast. I started school the next day.”

“It’s cool. I like it so far. I’m adjusting pretty fast. I can’t wait for the regular season to start.”

“I came out on the (recruiting) visit witih Lametrius (Davis), Aaron (Brown) and Zach (Masch). We didn’t really have a host. It was the week of the Cincinnati game. They were busy with the game. We talked amongst ourselves.”
The Warriors squandered a big lead in losing to Cincinnati.
“Man, I thought we had it. Damn. I was disappointed. It was a good game.”
In hindsight …
“They couldn’t run the ball consistently toward the end of the game. I hope I can make a diffrence. I’m here to make a difference.”

ah, another recruit that none of the recruit media learned of as one in the warriors sights.
i like his size.
we seem to recruit a lot of light weight players. 230 DT, 200 lb, 140 slot. an to think we don’t have enough money for extended training tables for the athletes. Wasn’t there an issue where the players were given one less meal a day with the training table to save money and the players had to fend for themselves out of pocket.

How heavy was that DE from Georgia that ran pass Ah Soon and Steinhoff, maybe UH wants speed, leverage and technique over brut size and strength..

Colt mentioned that he, Davone, GM and a few others stayed here after the first summer session to keep on working out and that really helped them. Lots of our athletes left Hawaii for a 3 week break before reporting for early camp. I know they will put in some time at home but nothing like working out with the people who will be playing along side them come Fall…

you know a guy like tua could actually latch on to an nfl team that employs a tight end. his having to go to the defense may have given him the chance to bulk up. if he can run a 4.7/40 and show he has good hands it just could happen for him.

Great to see Delroy’s son trying to become a Warrior. Delroy was actually the starting offensive tackle at UNLV in 1979. He inherited that position from another local product from Waianae by the name of Hansel Kane. The Rebels also had Brian Weisbarth(Roosevelt) starting at DT, Sao Vaefaga(Farrington) starting at DE, and Eliu Elisara(Roosevelt) starting at inside backer. I believe that Sao was Vince Manuwai’s uncle.
Hopefully Sean Michael is as good as his dad.

I wouldn’t focus on the weight of the recruits, as college athletes commonly gain weight after entering the conditioning programs. The important thing is to look at the frame of the player–at 6’5″, Shigematsu should have an excellent frame to gain weight…and being 6’5″ already means that he has a good height for an OL even if he doesn’t grow any taller.
6’5″, 230 pounds is actually quite reasonable for an OL recruit. It is rare that an OL plays right after high school, with a redshirt year quite common for the first year, so he’ll have time to increase his weight in a good manner (Cattle Calls are NOT the recommended technique!). I would expect a redshirt year no matter what his size because there has to be an adjustment to college competition after coming from Kapa’a.
All of this of course assumes that he’s 6’5″, or maybe 6’4″. If you were talking about a 6’0″ player, that would be a completely different story…but all the recruits at the All-Poly Camp could be measured against each other so I figure he has to be at or close to his listed height.

It’s true that when you go back almost a decade, UH does have several OL who are 6-4+ but in comparison, the current Gator line-up shows 12 of 17 OL are in the 6-4+ category…. 🙄
…and pity poor Freshman Travis Frederick at Wisconsin who, at 6-3, is the midget of the 17 member OL group as the lone player listed under 6-4.
In fact, 8 of the 17 are north of 6-5! 😯

I happen to be present at the All-Poly camp at Kapiolani park, did have opportunity to see Shigematsu in action, he wore green-silver uniform (Kapa’a high), may have been tallest lineman at camp, observed him in “inside drill” very good looking prospect, tall, moves well, competes, quick to hook ‘DEs. If he stays with his commitment to UH, the Warriors getting a potential steal!

The main reason that Purcell & Alama-Francis got up to 280+ in their Sr. year was the change to the 3-4 D with Glanville. Prior to that, they were 4-3 DE’s & played at <260 lbs. Of course, Alama-Francis probably was closer to 230 lbs & gained a ton of weight during that one off-season (if I remember correctly).
Was it a few weeks ago, some readers were wondering when UH would start recruiting linemen …. ?

DPK ~ D-1 has a way of mystifying us with his deep thoughts, quips & quotes. His ‘Peru’ comment is just one of his latest clues. I believe it may have something to do with earthquakes. I’m concerned that he may have a prediction hidden in that statement.
I’m leaving the crib soon to undertake a somber and serious mission- Sweety sez I am to acquire a “Jack Warrior” antenna ball no matter what the cost. RE: Murphy’s Meet The Coaches party next Thursday. The new Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Basketball coaches are coming. What other UH coaches are also going to be there?
Has a schedule/location been set yet for the post-game lunches and dinners during the football season?
It will be five weeks between the first and second home games this fall although only three games will be played during that time – September 12, 19 & 30.. Have any arrangements been made yet for Away-Gates at various locations?
Unfortunately, the September 30 game is on a Wednesday five time zones away so I assume that it will be very difficult for a lot of people to leave work at 2 pm. Perhaps that should be one of the Murphy’s games. Drop by for a late lunch and go back to work around 5 pm.
With respect to the Central Arkansas game which is on a Friday at 7 pm, that’s another one to shift worktime startnstops around – assuming that we all still have jobs.
OFF-SPORTS TOPIC #1:
Don’t forget that the Second Annual Family Promise Summer Barbecue is this Sunday, July 12, from 5 to 7 pm at Nu`uanu Congregational Church on the Pali Highway just beyond the first stoplight after the Wyllie Street Overpass.
Dinner will be served at 6 pm inside the gym which is located on the lower part of the church property close to Nu`uanu Stream while the grill will be set up just outside the side door. Playing basketball is a great way to work up an appetite if needed.

OFF-SPORTS TOPIC #2:
If eating is not your thing but drinking is, be sure to save your HI-5 cans & bottles and turn them in at RECYLING FOR CHANGE booth at the Kailua Relay For Life on Friday evening, July 31. RFC is providing recycling services for the event and will also be collecting bottles & cans from the larger community as well with the proceeds split between the two organizations.
RFC will also be collecting HI-5 containers at all home T-Gates in the cabana area so you can also bring them there throughout the fall.
Proceeds will be given to Alan Inaba’s cross-country program at Dole Middle School, Doris Sullivan’s PIAA organization, and Koa Anuenue’s athletic scholarship program on a rotating basis. The seventh home game proceeds will be given to the organization’s whose name is drawn by one of the Tsai-ko regulars.
COMPUTER UPDATE:
I’ve set up a file containing yesterday’s suggestions about computers and will ask for updates about 15 months from now. Hopefully, prices will be reduced by then.
I need a top-of-the-line Mac commercial laptop capable of of doing major multi-media tasks along with the standard office apps. When we closed down our media production company in late 2005, I didn’t really consider that I still needed the tools for the next two career shifts. Also by then I expect to be back in (real) school so maybe student discounts will still be available.
Then too things have changed so rapidly from a technological perspective that I’ll need to take some non-credit media workshops – will need to put aside money for training as well. .

Dean Wilson is 3-under after 7 in the John Deere Classic at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill, and T/13 in the first round.
Wilson got off to a great start with birdies on the 2nd and 3rd holes than sank a 7-footer on the 6th.
Wilson rolled a 11-foot birdie on the par 5 #2 and nearly aced the par 3 #3 for a 4″ birdie tap-in.
If Dean can scramble and avoid eratic play which has plaqued him on the tour– he has an opportunity to remain in the mix.
Wilson is attempting to gain an invite to the British Open at Turnberry, Scotland if he finishes in the top 5.
Officials at the Deere are flying qualified players on a chartered flight, direct to Turnberry after the final round of play.
Hoho wants to give a shout out to the UH womens cheerleading team. Come 4-5 years from now we’ll need all the cheer we can get.
The story I heard when Delroy Shigematsu came down with UNLV in 1981 was that he was adopted by a Japanese family. But should check with the Kapa’a peeps to confirm (since that story came from Lihue peeps).
someone on wsn is sayin that delroy is 1/2 african american 1/2 hawaiian and has zero japanese. so the adoption story might be true.
The 2010 recruiting class maybe a seminole moment for Hawaii’s summer camp if these early commits prove worthy by their 3rd year or earlier. It’s a gamble for sure, but the throw-down is made through the prism of MAC n staff.
Assuming redshirt status in their first year–a standard for good recruits is to contribute in their rs/frosh year and be
in-the-mix to start by their second year.
Its an adacious strategy and if our coaches are on the mark with their intuitive evaluation it will be a montrous score for warrior future recruiting fortunes….MAC is showing creativity

Every year, football referee George Gusman meets with the media, going over new rules, etc. He even puts on a video presentation.
I haven’t asked him yet, but would there be interest in George putting on a presentation for our readers? Lemme know, and if there is, we can try to set something up.

The Ailsa course at Turnberry is a an Open classic and was rebuilt and resurfaced around a WWII airfield which remains as a reminder of a tragic era, long past but not forgotten.
The runways still exist and serve as a monument of its history that transformed the Ailsa links into one of the best in Britian.
Long after the WWII era passed, the legend of Turnberry Point reappeared, as the rebuilding of a bunker on the second hole two years ago marked the discovery of a bomb deep below the surface.
A Memorial to the Great War and its fallen is perched above the 12th hole.
The clubhouse served as a hospital for the wounded during the campaign. Now, it will cost you $800 per night IF you are a PGA player. LOL.
The #4 to #11 holes run along Turnberry’s rugged west coast….here is a brief description:
“The first three holes suitably introduce the golfer to the test that’s to come, but it is standing on the fourth tee, 165 yards from a flagstick swaying violently in the wind atop a bluff, that the feeling of true seaside golf begins to take hold. Playing to one of the smallest greens on the course, the iron shot up the hill must be struck with authority. Irons played away from the falloff to the ocean left will often find the hillock flanking the green’s right edge, from where par is a tall order”.

Dean-o sank a 26-foot birdie on the 8th and follwed w a 11- foot birdie on the par 5 10th to go 5-under in the John Deere Classic, one back of the clubhouse leader and Tied for 3rd.
Wilson has 5 birdies and no bogeys, he is hitting close to 90% off the tee and is on the green over 80% in regulation.
Wilson has brought his putting game too, averaging over 32′ in hole proximity, yet drillin the 5 birds!

I’m a little skeptical about all these commitments so far. Most if not all of them are either one or two star players. I would think that we want more three stars and a couple four star players in the recruiting class. Not to say that these players will be good, but you have to say that based upon the Division IA caliber competition we want to upgrade the recruiting process. One of things that will portend how we will do, is how the 2009 class will do, and to some extent the 2008 class. Guys like Jevonte Taylor, Blount, etc in 08 and Brown, Masch, Leonard, Bradley, Dimude, etc in 09 and other freshman break into the depth chart will determine who well the evaluating process is doing. We will have to see in time. Good luck!

#148 has a valid point but as I mentioned at #133 MAC is takin a different tact to gain an advantage over an everpresent array of BCS and top mid-major recruiting poachers.
I suspect, the mailand and local blue-chippers will come later…it’s obvious that MAC is reaping his present crop from his recently installed summer camp field….if he hits–he has a bonaza and a great future to restock–if not, he floops….it’s a gamble, that simple.
Moreover, as #148 judiciousily warns, unheralded early signators are no cause for premature celebration….yet, still, as I have said, MAC is being creative and takin bold initiatives.

Good point, Derek. I can see maybe taking a chance or two on a guy like Sean Shigematsu who is 6’5″ and sounds like he has potential, but I agree that it sounds like we are going after a lot of “potential” players and not many proven players.
The only player that I see so far in recent weeks that will make an immediate impact for UH is Kaniela Tuipulotu, an NFL talent, starting DT from Univ. of Arizona, who played in the Pac-10 as a true freshman. Also, while all of these scholarship offers are readily being made, Jacob Barit, a former 6’3″ and 235 lb. first-team all-state middle linebacker, from St. Louis who is transferring from Arizona Western J.C. is having to walk-on and pay his own way. Now here is a local kid with talent who really wants to be a Warrior and the staff is making him jump through hoops. Go figure.

jacob barit is a JC LB w/ 2 years of eligibility. mack probably couldnt offer him bc he used up all his 2009 scholies, i mean look at how much guys are greyshirting. also, we rarely recruit JC LBs, coaches didnt even offer that guy akoni lasconia.

Reports have Bivens negotiating for a buy-out.
Multiple sources tell GolfDigest.com that Carolyn Bivens’ four-year tumultuous tenure as LPGA commissioner will end next week. “She’s gone. It’s just a question of whether it’s a firing or a resignation,” one veteran player says…..Bivens lost the Hawaii tour and that was the straw that broke the camels back.
Derek, I really wouldn’t put too much stock right now in the star-system. I think that the Hawaii coaches are professionals who are quite proficient at what they do. Most of the commitments that we have secured are under the radar guys who are not well known by the recruiting publications. Most of the youngsters from Hawaii do not have the luxury of attending camps like they do on the continental U.S. so as a result go unnoticed. If you look at the history of some of Hawaii’s greatest players, they were those under the radar types. We will do quite well with the players that Mac and company are bringing in. Your closing percentage on those 3 and 4 star athletes that are also being recruited by the BCS schools are not very high. So the Hawaii coaches in my opinion are doing it the right way. Jj never offered those types of athletes scholarships. At least Mac is making offers to them early and hoping that one or two of them may fall in his lap. With Jj’s way, no one ever fell in his lap because he never made the offer. But the majority of athletes that Hawaii gets will be the one and two star athletes who work hard, are coachable, and play with an attitude. Hawaii may secure smaller dogs, but those dogs will have bigger and more vicious bites. They will play like a pack of wild dogs. Ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff, grrrrrrrr, ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff.

Howzit Derek! Got your point and it’s certainly reasonable. However, got to remember that these are juniors (and below in hs) which means that the recruiting services probably don’t have any information on them yet…doubly so for the kids in Hawaii. Hence the one star rating. One star does not necessarily mean that’s the skill level, just that there’s no info.

No way anyone can dose these early signees with saccharin anymore than anyone can forecast doom because they are not star-stamped….characterizing the coaches as professionals and presumming infallability thereby is naive….it depends on which coach is pushin, even then, the proof is in the puddin….and reward is not redeemable until the athlete proves it on the field, not by supporters in cyber space.
Again #148 makes a cogent caveat and posts a legit concern.

Chances are by the end of this year, most of these early recruits that UH have offered will all be 3-stars and up. But, that will mean little if they don’t get the proper training and coaching to deal with the next level.

I remember Wagner talking about a highly recruited player who never progressed while he was here and compared him with another player who played at another school who ended up being drafted in the top 3 rounds (if I remember correctly). I have always liked the players who worked hard to be the best that they could.

wilson now has 7 birds and 2 bogeys on the round.
I don’t think characterizing the coaches as pros presumes infallability. Lots of pros fail. But presuming the coaches know what they are doing would be a safe bet in my book.
Suffice to say that Mac is playing the recruitment game the best way he can at this point. Offering underclassmen is still an emerging trend and UH needs to follow the rest of the country in this regard. He’s also gone after the so called “big stars” and many haven’t reciprocated at this point, so he’s hedging his bets, which is a prudent thing to do.
I totally agree with Pride’s assessment above. He’s played the game as a UH standout and knows the local recruitment scene as well as anybody. And, like anybody in the know, he only shares a fraction of what he really knows.

You got to like the way Wilson cat-bounced w 2 birds on the 16th and 17th after dropping 2 consecutive bogeys earlier.
Wilson does not strike big off the tee and is not ranked in the top pga-100 for driving distance @ 269, but his skill is chippin around the green and the use of his flat iron. He can roll the ball and drain ’em but needs more consistency in his accuracy off the Tee and to play steady.
The John Deere Classic is no backdoor tournament either as 4 of the top fedex players are in the field including #2 Kenny Perry and US Open Champ, Lucas Glover, to name a few.
The top 5 finishers, get an auto-invite (if not otherwise invited) to the Brit Open next week at Turnberry and a ride on a charted flight to Glasgow, Scotland.

I agree that high school recruits don’t really merit the description of a “proven” player, but at the same time, Manley is as proven as any local kid, we offered him, and he hasn’t accepted. I’m not knocking him, but just pointing out that the program and the recruiting effort can not afford to stand still while the “proven” players try and collect plane tickets to trip next fall and winter.
I applaud guys who look at themselves as Warriors and know this is where they want to be. It should be an easy choice just looking in the mirror, looking at family at meal time, looking at friends at the beach, looking at the success of the program, looking at the integrity of the coaches, looking at the success former players have had getting into camps at the next level.
Can we afford to wait on guys who haven’t yet figured out what it means to to play football for the home team?

I gotta agree with you. For the most part, these “proven” players that we have been discussing have had scholarship offers on the table for over a year now and none of them have committed. I don’t see anything wrong with the coaches saying, it’s time to move on. I like the prospects that the coaches are picking up because of the fact that they have a lot of upside and for me, I would rather have a player on my team that has upside rather than a player who has peaked. I think the strategy the coaches are using is a very analytical and systematic. They are watching a lot of film on these recruits and breaking down there every move. I feel that we are picking up some really good recruits and I just hope the bigger recruits figure out that if they want to come to Hawaii they need to make up their minds quickly before there are no more scholarships to offer.

At this point, it looks like the only road game I’ll be heading off to this season is the UNLV game and either the Nevada or San Jose game (but not both). I’ll be sure to let the gang know of my intentions as the time approaches.

I’ve got a job offer in DC on the table pending completion of a background investigation. They’ll officially bring me on once the background check clears, most likely in late Sept./early Oct. I’m still waiting to hear back from the folks in the Bay Area.
I guess one of the advantages of still staying young is that I don’t have that much to fill out, relatively speaking. Therefore, completing the SF-86 shouldn’t take very long.
That, and I have nothing to hide.

Update on Warrior fb Jack in the Box antenna ball promotion. Spoke with the manager at the outlet at Tamarind Park (between Bishop and Alakea Streets downtown). He says they’re almost sold out for today, BUT expecting 9 cases tomorrow (9 x 100 = 9,000) available from tomorrow for the entire month or while supplies last. He claims the shipment totaled 180,000 of these little buggers, so there should be enough for everybody who wants one. No urgency at this time, but don’t wait too long. He invites everybody to come on down to the downtown outlet whether you want to get a free one with a big lunch meal deal or buy only the helmet for $1.49. BTW, I enjoyed the Jumbo Jack sandwich, large fries and gigantic drink (can’t remember the last time I ate there). Tasted better than those served at BK. ST, hope I’m not violating any “no free advertising” rules of this blog.

If someone where to pick an apple from a tree and observe it was green, than say, this is an apple, it is green, therefore all apples are green….. he would of course be wrong because his major premise was in error. His logic is smooth and probably everything that follows believeable.
Again, consider that UH coaches are paid and considered professional. Are we to presume that because they are professional by definition they are also proficient? And if so, that every recruit they select will therefore be successful?
The words flow and I feel the passion, but the logic is misplaced.
If that doesnt hit home than quiery the reasons for TARP bailouts.
Too many people pile up logic on faulty premises and when the shit hits the fan–as it id in the sub-prime market–the house of cards tumble.
To me, these early unheralded recruits have alot to prove and the proof will be on a D1A field–not in their selection by “professional and proficient” coaches….having said that, I would join Pride in welcoming all these commits to our warrior ohana and extend best wishes for their success.

Some of my students are refusing to leave college simply because they cannot find a position in their fields. They are working on their graduate diplomas. A few are working on their post-doc specialties.
Problem is they might be over qualified for entry level. I have been telling them to get hooked up with an internship or to start their own companies
Let me tell you good folks a thing or two. Admittingly, we as coaches at Boise State keep tabs of what the other teams are doing in regards to recruiting. The saying of knowing what your enemy is doing is true. And we have been watching your Warrior coaches closely this summer as they seemed to have an eye for the football recruits that are long shots or sleepers. At first there was serious discernment on all the pledges your Warrior team was getting. And we did our research to see what was going on. But in all candidness, we look at your Warrior recruits bemusingly. For they seem to be neither stars in their high school league or even the top stars on their high school team. Furthermore, we imputed data from their camp and combine appearances and we were even puzzled of what the alluring appeal these recruits have to the Warrior coaches. This coming WAC media day when I see the Warrior coaches I’ll ask them. But in the meantime tell your coaches that the secret to recruiting is to recruit proven playmakers.

Best of luck with your job search! If the DC company is doing a background check, that is very promising. There are a lot of positions available in DC right now, so that might be a good option if the Bay Area one and others fall through.
It would be easier to make UH games from the Bay Area, but at least you’d get to see all of Colt’s Redskins games on TV in DC.

If the Feds take as long as they say they’re gonna take to complete the background check, I should still be living on the west coast come the UNLV game. We’re looking at ~2 months to complete the background check.
They (in DC) currently have me slated for an October entry-on-duty date, but mentioned that that could be delayed to early/mid-November or beyond if the background check takes longer to complete.

The key element being illustrated is chronological or temporal and has nothing at all to do with inductive logic as demonstrated by the “this apple is green ergo all apples are green” example.

I don’t know who’s #231 of Boise State, but he’s got a good point, a very good point. Recruiting proven playmakers is a big key. Recruiting on the idea of projecting for the future is a 50/50 proposition, probably even less. Because recruiting is the life blood of the program, coaches cannot make a lot of mistakes. If they do, they will be out of a job real quick. I cannot in all honesty at this point trust the coaching staff yet because they have been on the job 2 years of recruiting and in some cases 1 season. The jury is still out and we won’t know for maybe 2 or 3 years from how to see how well they are doing. That’s why it’s very interesting. I, like everybody else want the Warrior Nation to be the very best and win the WAC every year. I wonder if one of the three QB (Neilson, Shutter, and the Calif. kid that escapes me) will emerge to be an eventual starter and be very good. If, if, if, if, etc. There are a lot of ifs. There are not guarantees in life. Manti Teo might come close. The coaches are professionals or at least you would think so. Doctors are professionals too. Some doctors do a lousy job too. Like anybody else, coaches are human beings and they make mistakes. I’m hoping for the best like I said and I hope this season will be a very good one. One thing I do know is that Boise State, year in and year out, is very, very good. Excellent in fact. When a Boise State coach says something I think their track record speak for itself. There’s nothing wrong w/ schools like Kapaa, Campbell, Kaimuki, Leilehua, Pearl City, Moanalua, and Kaimuki. Leilehua was State champion. The others are not exactly powerhouses perenially. There’s no private school recruit just yet. I’m sure there will be soon. I hope there are some proven playmakers in there someplace. Note. Colt Brennan was a 3 star player. I also trusted
June Jones judgment in a quarterback. I also trusted, because he was a proven coach, Mike Cavanaugh, but he’s at Oregon State now because he put OL in the pros. I hope Coach Shaw will show his mettle.
And I hope Rolo will improve after last year.

This list is so tedious these days with all these “experts” telling people how to think.

Derek, if your point is that we would be better off if all our recruits were consensus five star players, no one would argue against that. Of course even that is no indicator of success. Look at Notre Dame. All that money and publicity for what?
But, the point is that five star and even four star recruits are not knocking down our doors right now. Part of that has to do with the ranking system and part of that has to do with the fact that we do not play in a BCS conference. It is what it is. But if we had gotten a commitment from Vehikite a year ago, the critics would have been against that too. It was only after sc offered that most of the message board geeks sang up.
Colt and Chase Daniel sure have bonded at Washington…both of them hope that Colt can beat out Todd Collins for the #2 spot and Chase hopes that he can beat out Todd Collins for the #3 spot.
It is just like Colt to welcome a QB to Washington right after he signed with them.

Excellent points of course. I think that the Warriors would have in the best shape if the local players they first offered (I’m talking about a lot more players than Manley) had committed…but since they don’t seem to interested in taking UH’s offer right now, I’m glad the coaches had their camps to evaluate the other recruits as early as possible and choose the players that best fit their needs.
Did you see that video (I think on rivals) where one Kapolei recruit UH offered says that it is his teammate (which UH also offered I believe) and his dream to go to Oregon State together. Given that environment, the UH coaches are correct to move on. Sitting around a hoping for the top recruits to commit could leave a huge hole in the recruiting class and really be a big problem.
Mac and the rest of the coaches have gotten commits for a good number of players that can fit their system, and they still have scholarships left over to try to convince the other players they offered to commit. It also creates a limited supply of scholarships that encourages recruits not to just think of UH as a safety school and to end their recruiting process and commit to UH if they want to stay home.
I think that it is a great idea that Texas brought in this motivational speaker…
Good recruiting is greatly influenced by your location, i.e University of Oregon. Oregon has all the money it needs to out recruit anyone in the country, what prevents this from happening is that the U of Oregon is in Oregon. The challenges that UH faces is many time greater than U of Oregon. Trying to out recruit USC will mean a quick departure for Coach Mack. Mack’s job is to find the unpolished diamonds. Not easy, but I know he can do it.
UH has a long way to go before it becomes a place where there are more good (3-star or better) players knocking than scholies available. But it they can build a program that wins the WAC conference with consistent regularity, I believe the very nature of this being Hawaii and Hawaii’s only game in town, will make prospects start to line up long before the coaches get a chance to approach them. ((The success of Colt, Bess, Satele, Ryan, etc. will also help tremendously.)
Are we all talking about the Big XII’s Top Recruiter after his first year in the conference? (2001)
Does anyone believe for a second a Boise State coach is going to come on this forum and tell us our recruits to date are all projects in the making and if we want to remain competitive we better get blue chippers from here on out? Could it be that someone is frustrated with what he or she views as projects and throws a coach in their name to gain credibility. If you want credibility you loser then don’t camouflage your team’s uniforms with the field.
As for recruiting, the guys on the radar screen were offered long ago. It was time to move on to the guys likely to be on the radar screen by the end of the season. We jumped on some of those guys that long to be Warriors and play for the home team. I doubt any kid has aspirations to grow up and play college football in a state best known for tater tots, but UH has a rich tradition, and the local papers have been featuring on many of those stars. So maybe these recruits aren’t being offered by Notre Dame, when those mama buys from Boise play us, you can bet our boys will give them a face full of elbow. [gotta love football talk in July]
It bears repeating, the coaches have seen these guys in action, up close and personal, doing combine type stuff, but also doing game situation reps against known talent. They got to measure the heart and soul of some of these kids, and measure how they respond to coaching. This is a lot more info than they could discern from just a 40 time and a tape of clips man-powering weaker opponents.
…..and the guy who was constantly being accused of “recruiting” kids from all over Hawaii to build the greatest HS program in the State?

I agree about the importance of camps and the edge that provides UH’s coaches…I’m been hoping that UH would have an extensive use of camps for years. UH is in an ideal situation for camps because most recruits from Hawaii can only attend their camp (plus the unaffiliated camps like All Poly and Just Win)–in places like Texas and California recruits can easily attend camps from 5+ schools and see their facilities…but for most recruits from Hawaii, the only campus they will attend a camp at will be UH’s campus.

You look at the venue, this message board, and you see debate. And what comes with debate are two sides of every argument, and if the argument is with sarcasm, cynicism and objectivity then it’s abnormal because everyone else here conforms the other way, mostly with biases and always pro-UH. This is a given, and will never change. So if I’m cynical get use to it. Or move on.
My statements. Or anyone elses statement looking at Coach Mack’s recruiting this summer does pique curiosity. This isn’t wrong. This isn’t being not loyal to the Warriors, either.
When you look at football recruits, in general, you want to look for size, speed, athleticism and how they perform in camps and games. A lot of the recruits the Warriors have gotten have less then desirable size, speed and athleticism. And if you look further the recruits aren’t even stars in their high school leagues. Is this wrong to say this? I don’t think so.
When you look at the recruits, individually, the coaching staff is propagating the idea that some of the recruits are hidden gems and did well in camps. Okay, fine… then I try to look at what makes them so appealing. A check of their combine numbers are sub par. A check to see what honors they’ve received in their league play is minimal. And it does make me wonder. It makes wonder a lot, especially when I know that how the recruit performs at the high school level-on the field, how fast and athletic they are.. it all transcends onto the next level with UH.
And conversely if the Warriors are signing up recruits that are slow, not as athletic as you would like them to be and not the playmaker types then it is my belief that the team’s play in the future will be vulnerable to successes.
The two most important things to get the top local players to stay home: win and upgrade the facilities. The facilities are being upgraded now but are still behind in many areas…and the greatest facilities in the world would be less of a draw if things like forcing the players to scale a fence to work out continue.
All the studies I’ve seen have shown that winning normally has a year or two delayed effect on recruits–the seniors may already be committed, but the junior and sophomores can think more highly of a team that is winning then. The state was behind the Warriors at the end of the 2006 season and especially during the 2007 season, and I have to think that helped with the 2009 class (and partially with 2008, but much of the late-recruiting success there was goodwill for Mac and some excellent scrambling job by the coaches).
Last season didn’t go as well as it could have, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the top local 2010 players aren’t jumping on the bandwagon now. However, winning this season can change that for this class and especially for the 2011 class. Winning big *is* possible this year, with BSU and Fresno State coming to Hawaii and with the Pac-10 team being played on the road picked to finish last in their conference. There are a lot of winnable games, but there are a lot of games that could be quite tough…the outcome of those games will very important for years to come for the Warrior program.

Seems like the root of the animosity is that the scouting services didn’t have on their radar many of the UH commitments.
So here’s the debate: Is UH at fault for recruiting players not on the scouting services’ lists, or are the scouting services at fault for not having the UH recruits on their list?
#285 – I think it’s the latter. Like people say, once the recruit starts getting offers, the star rating goes up… reaaaaaaal objective systems. 🙄
By the way, you all know how a scouting service determines stars, right?
They send out questionnaire forms to coaches, players, combine administrators, etc.
The respondents then list the number of offers and interests. The more schools listed, the higher the ranking. The services don’t actually go through game tapes or interview family members.
It’s a mathematical thing. There are too many schools and too many programs for scouts to track everyone.
But like I said before, all coaches — including UH’s — like who they like. They have their own rating system.
I totally agree with ‘lava’ & ‘kama crab’ on their take about “proven” players & recruits–although obviously the jury will be out for at least a couple of years, i’m optimistic about the currrent recruits & the direction & progress that the program is making. I share others’ skeptical/cynical view about Boise State Coach’s posting. A genuine Boise State Coach would acknowledge more than anyone the merits of developing players who were not necessarily highly-touted or highly-rated. How many 3 or 4 star players have been signed by Boise in the last 5 years?? It’s a tribute to the magnificent job that their coaches are doing along with getting kids with the right attitude who buy into a program–it also doesn;t hurt that in Boise you just don’t have the same kind of distractions that there are in Hawaii. If Boise State “Coach” is reading my posting, I’d say to him that regardless of the philosophy in recruiting, UH is going to kick your team’s butt this year and then you can comment because Hawaii’s players will have “proven” it on the college field rather than the high school one!
Boise State, the subject of today’s side discussions, hardly has any high-ranking recruits. First, it’s difficult to recruit to WAC schools in general and Idaho in particular.
But they have a great system, and they go after the players they believe will fit in the system.
It seems to work.

I never heard about this fundraiser until a few hours ago – not that I could afford $150 for a ticket even if I’d heard about it six days or six weeks ago. Doesn’t look like the recession has hit die-hard UH football fans very hard. What’s Na Koa raising the money for?
Speaking of which – raising money, that is – if you’re interested in Hawaiian culture, music, crafts, and food as well as hands-on educational and environmental exhibits – do attend the Ulupo Heiau Ho`ike this Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm at the southern edge of Kawainui Marsh just below the Windward YMCA on Kailua Road. Great family experience – free parking and no admission charge. All proceeds from selling the Hawaiian Plate Lunches will go towards the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club’s scholarship program.
Back to football: When is the Second Annual Football Clinic for Women going to be held? Or did I miss hearing/reading about it as well?
I think it is weird how some worry so much about recruiting. The coaches are going to recruit who they want. Why worry about something you have no control over? I would never call a recruit sub par.

The caller wanted me to relay the message to the UH coaches.
So I called a coach, and relayed the message.
A day later, UH offered a scholarship, and the player accepted.
And that’s how David Veikune became a Warrior.
but, i haven’t missed a tailgate or a home game in two years now.

but when you read how the Warriors sign up rush ends and they’re doing times like 4.9 and 5.06 you begin to wonder.
when they recruit players less than 150 you begin to wonder

I’m often puzzled when I see some arguing what they believe is a dissenting point rather than stating an opinon. The assumption is that all readers think the same way, and so they are debating against the majority. But, in fact, they are debating against themselves.
Missed the drawing – we left right after the “food drawings” because we wanted to get dessert from the new frozen yogurt store across from Zippy’s in Kailua. We barely beat the madding crowd of fireworks watchers as it was.
Congratulations to LizK on winning the ticket. By my calculations, in 37 years, four months, and thirteen days I’ll be debt-free and can spend my money on whatever – assuming, of course, that I haven’t shuffed off this mortal coil by then.
Hmmm – wonder where Aloha Stadium will be located in 2046? Unless we change our wicked ways, UH Manoa will be waterfront property so the lower campus facilities will have to be relocated as well.

Al — no torch to pass for a medium size (25-40 pax) Genji party anyway. We’ve been often and half the Tsai-kos know the owners, so getting a room or the lounge is almost automatic for them. But there are larger venues to consider and “strangers” to deal with…
BTW, the Garret & Rich2176 reservation was on the wall for 2 months. One week before, Art calls me and says he doesn’t know anything about it. What? Actually, he wanted to know if we wanted a buffet (all-you-can-eat type now–he decided that after seeing us eat the one and only time). But I thought the $25 dnner/tax/tip total was a little high and not conducive to people passing through mainly to pick up tickets.
No, see, here is where you go astray. Being cynical does not mean you are objective anymore than being optimistic means you are deluded. Reality can SMACK a cynic upside the head just as easily as it can smack an optimist. Didn’t you learn ANYTHING from the 2007 season? Don’t you remember “Believe”? By definition, you cannot be a cynic and “Believe”. Belief demands faith. If you are a cynic, you have faith only in failure.
I don’t know how these recruits will turn out in the next three or four years. Neither do you. Neither does the fool on the hill no matter how much he brays. Yes, these kids are not 6′ 5″, 300 lbs with a 4.8 40 and a 99 inch reach. Guess what? Those kids aren’t lining up to come to UH just yet. We are not yet attracting the leading edge of the bell-shaped curve. That’s the present reality.
BUT, I have full confidence that Mack and staff can recognize and develop talent. These kids that you are dismissing are high school juniors. They have another year of high school to develop and then a red shirt year (and even a gray shirt year) before they have to see the field for UH. That is two or three years in the future. How can you even begin to think that you can accurately predict their future talents when you have never seen them play, never coached them, never even talked to them? And if you cannot accurately predict the future, why say something negative now?
What I like most about these recruits is that Mack is picking kids who seem to be solid citizens, who are appreciative of this opportunity, and who will work to become the best players they can be. The scouts have yet to find a way to measure heart and desire and dedication. I will take a two star athlete with the heart of a champion and a limitless desire for greatness over ANY lazy ass, self-entitled five star athlete every day of the week. In fact, isn’t that the exact recipe that — irony of ironies — boise has followed?
So, my advice to you and all the other haters? Get over your hate. There is nothing EASIER in a time of crisis than to biotch and moan about how the future sucks and we’re all going to die. That is the path of least resistance. That is the LAZY way out. No emotional investment, no effort, no hope, no faith. Then, if things actually go that way, you can tell others “I told you so” to feel good about yourself. How sad.
Instead of all that, just give these kids a chance. Give them time to grow into something, whatever that might be. Stop forcing them to have to deal with negativity from their “fans” before they ever have to deal with the “enemy”. Because the future is not yours. It’s not mine. It’s THEIRS. Let them fulfill it. Let them seize it. And for heaven’s sake, if you won’t help their efforts, just get out of the damn way. Because you don’t know the future any more than I do. THAT’S reality.

In the scene from The West Wing, C.J. supposes that they lost the primary and general elections in Texas because of the aftermath that followed a bad joke. The falsehood in that was the idea that the joke led to the loss in Texas. What made more sense (but wasn’t said) was that it would be hard for a liberal Ivy League economics professor turned Massachusetts governor to win in a state like Texas.
