Safety Spencer Smith invited slotback Kealoha Pilares to spend three weeks training in Georgia. Smith spent a couple of minutes with the Warrior Beat detailing the schedule:
Where they will train:
“My old high school has a really good weight room. My speed trainer has a nice gym where I work out. He has a lot of good machines for speed. He has a little track in the back, a little turf thing upstairs. He’s got pretty much everything you need for speed training. We’ll time on the 40 before we leave, probably laser time.”
The heat is on.
“People think it’s humid in Hawai‘i, but it’s nothing like it is down South. You stand outside and you sweat. I remember working, selling landscaping rocks, and I would sit in the A.C. and I would be sweating because it’s humid from outside. It’s pretty unbearable sometimes. It helps you feel in shape. I like it after, not during.”
The best place to eat?
“My mom’s cooking. She makes spaghetti, sesame chicken, fried rice and Indian curry. She has the recipe from one of our friends from India. It’s a family recipe. She gets the ingredients from an Indian store. It’s legit. It’s the real spices. It’s hot and spicy. Sometimes I’ve had to eat cereal for dinner because I wasn’t able to eat it because it was too hot.”
Favorite cereal?
“Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. Those are my cereals. I eat it with 2 percent milk. That’s my breakfast in the morning.”
Pilares will help out in the kitchen.
“Kealoha’s going to teach my mom how to make sticky rice so he can feel somewhat at home.”

Future Hall of Famer Junior Seau might replace Ray Lewis as one of the featured guests at Thursday’s fund-raiser at Luana Hills Country Club. Lewis was to appear at the dinner, which benefits UH’s football camps, and at the clinic on Kaua‘i this week. But he canceled after learning of the death of his best friend, Steve McNair.

Although my dad was a professional photographer during my growing-up years, I did not like to have my picture taken. Too ugly and too fat – nothing has changed except that now I get to add too old to the list of reasons why I disappear or hide behind someone whenever someone calls for a group picture.

Meant to post this answer a few days ago about issues & concerns with UH ticket policies. Address your concerns directly to Virgina Hinshaw and Jim Donovan at the same time. Although e-mail is faster, a “real” letter will receive more attention. Don’t forget to include your direct contact information. And, of course, please offer some suggestions to address your concerns.
For example, here’s a couple of ours: Anyone who purchases a ticket for an afternoon baseball game in Murakami Stadium should be able to attend a men’s volleyball or women’s or men’s basketball game later that same day for free. Or how about allowing a 50% discount in either venue if you show a ticket stub from another sport from the previous two weeks.

According to this blog the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas has the early point spreads for the upcoming season. The author of this article mentions that the odds makers look at the UH-UNLV game as one of the season’s biggest games…hhmm.

Tiger Woods has won three tournaments this year in eight-stroke starts but the tournament victories were hosted by Arnold Palmer (Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bayhill), Jack Nicklaus (Memorial at Murfield) and Tiger himself (AT&T at the Congressional).
“I remember when I first won Byron’s tournament, to have Mr. Nelson there on the 1st tee to shake your hand, and then when you came off the green to have him shake your hand there, as well, I mean, that’s something that you’ll always remember….same thing with Arnold and Jack” Woods said.
Than with a wry smile Tiger added,

I think Veni Manu’s grayshirting means UH is quite loaded at defensive end.
As for redshirts, UH won’t announce those. They will sort of happen naturally during the season.
When I saw Veni at one game last year I thought I was watching Mel Purcell. I hope he works hard. I think he will be a future starter.

Tiger salutes a young warrior:
Walking down the 18th fairway next to Anthony Kim with the AT&T trophy a couple of strokes away from being claimed officially, Tiger said to AK,
“I enjoyed it, and there will be many more to come.
Just keep working hard, and we’ll do this for many more years”.
Indeed, AK came up a little short on the scorecard but scored bigtime in the minds and hearts of fans….he kept to his aggressive game plan for all 18 holes.
During yesterday’s golf they showed the military amputee who was being honored at the 18 tee. While walking to the 18th tee Tiger stopped and gave him a fist bump and a pat on the back, later they showed Anthony Kim and he just walked by as if they soldier wasn’t even there. I thought that was an oversight by AK and really bad camera timing. Jim Nantz even had to throw some commentary to cover AK.

the continuing flow of notable grayshirts are worthy stockpiles of inventory for future exchange.
The presumption, of course, is that these athletes will use their time wisely to prepare for the classroom AND to work hard on their diet, conditioning, agility, speed and weight training. It is a gift of time if properply utilized and as we have seen from others, can pay off in bigtime….but, we have also seen many flop!
The point being made is that there are no guarantees except for the character and discipline of the athlete himself.
For the overzealous fan, the expectation can only come after the grayshirts-redshirt year–two years down the road. This system takes time–it is the stock equivalent of the futures….however, if the young athlete is highly motivated, the return value will be more than worth the wait….be careful in your expectation and like all futures, keep a discerning eye on its appreciation, if any.
Training in Georgia will be a killer. When I was there I can remember the wind coming from inland so it was hot. Not like the trades here.

Tiger Woods was the official host of the AT&T Tournament.
It was his tournament and that 18th tee moment that captured the fairway walk was scripted for TV to dramatize the profound thanks Tiger and sponsors have for our military for making sacrifices for our country.
It was for staged for Tiger to walk alongside the soldier in the wheel chair!
Moreover, in defense of AK, he was all over the course and club high-fiving and low-fiving every fan, military man and woman who reached for him….I would have to say, AK was the most congenial player on the course and club during the six-day event….he loves the attention, to the extent of acknowledging fans on the green before a crucial putt… when he made a bogey on the front-nine to lose the lead to Tiger, he reached into the gallery to sign a red-white-blue cap that a little girl stuck out from the crowd and patted her hair.
difficult to spec on veni manu, but, tony t. would know cuz he meets w mac & staff to discuss these matters on an ongoing basis and micro manages the position depth charts to determine gaps and flows for current and future position charts….good organizational set-up and neccessary to prevent future position shortfalls in any given year….

Re-Veni Manu Gray Shirting
I don’t like this decision at all. With 6 DE graduating next year wouldn’t it have been wiser to give the future DE player(s) reps, now, so the team has something to build on in the future. Come next year, gulp, what’ll the team’s depth chart look like at DE. Say, for example,if this were a baseball team and your team is overloaded with outfielders that are seniors, whereas some of the outfielders that are seniors aren’t going to see much playing time anyway–would you keep them all, or cut a few and make room for the younger underclassmen entering the program? Yes, cut them. I would have thought a healthier picture for the team would be, yes, cut a senior DE and make an opening for a newer player(s) so they are gaining the needed valuable reps and experience so they can fortify this position (DE) in the future. As a result, come next year the depth at DE will be very thin. And it wouldn’t surprise me to see the staff scurrying off in recruiting for 2-3 JC DE. Veni is a resource-there is a lot of upside to getting him into the picture quickly because of the lack of depth that UH is going to see next year. The staff has to recognize on how to individually cultivate each recruit. So there’s a harvest at the end of the road. They should also recognize that one shoe doesn’t fit to all new recruits, where they are automatically gray shirted. Potentially each gray shirt is giving up a minimum of 5 years. And maybe 6 years of their life to the football program if they incur any hardships (injuries) along the way, which I think is a steep sacrifice and where I think it can turn off recruits from coming into this program if they know the staff has a proclivity to gray shirt it’s incoming freshmen recruits.

Thank you for posting the early Vegas lines. One thing to keep in mind is that the lines don’t necessarily reflect what the casino thinks will happen–they just reflect what the casino thinks that the gamblers are thinking. Fans tend to be biased towards their team, so UNLV fans would tend to favor their team.
I would expect that the betting line would shrink from that touchdown, barring injury or other problems at Washington State.

The Arizona Daily Star has an article about Tuipulotu’s transfer to UH. There is a good reason why he was down on the depth chart (listed as 3rd team NT in some places)–he was injured so badly that he was planning to sit out this season.

good afternoon tsaikos. just talking last week about the lpga letting their commissioner go and voila!!!!!, they are asking her to resign. bivens has been a sore sport for the lpga, but the spot has now become cancerous and could be fatal for the lpga unless they cut her out. one of her biggest downfalls is that she had no knowledge of asian culture or how business is conducted by asians and she let her ego (stupidity) show when she made it mandatory that the lpga golfers be fluent in english. i don’t see the nba, major league bb, nhl, or any other pro sport requiring their players to be fluent in english.

He would have fared better if he were eligible in this QB-thin draft .
besides that, my favorite lpga player mw, could use another course in public speaking, you know.
this year the warriors will have a problem when they travel. who will be the 65 players going???? but next year, it will be a compound problem with a truly depthful of players. BUT, isn’t that a great problem to have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There isn’t an NCAA limit on non-conference trips, but I think economics will dictate otherwise.
The key is to make sure that they limit support staff, not players.

some posts on “bowl games”, especially the WAC, indicate that most teams participating are losing money.
are they losing money because the team takes too many “non-paying guests” in their official travel party? if so, then take only what is absolutely necessary for the game. the days of “I deserve to go because I am………..” should be over and the team and conference can become profitable.
also, is it necessary that “conference officials” travel higher than economy class on airlines? are they willing to “cut expenses” by not flying business or first class? or, staying in “upgraded” hotel rooms? basic question is how far are the conference officials willing to share the economic pain. same goes for game officials/referees who are flown all over the country and stay in “upscale” hotels. seems to me a lot of egos!!!
speaking of bowl games, clue me in on this – when the bowl game says payout is $750,000 – does this mean each team gets $750,000 or is this amount split evenly by the 2 teams?

No LPGA tour events in Hawaii for 2010. Read recently that they were all canceled. This is a shame. It reflects on how the sponsors of these tournaments are also burdened with the downward trend in the economy.
On another note: The LPGA requiring it’s members to play every golf tournament at least once in every two years is a rule I wish the PGA would adopt. What this would mean if the PGA had this rule is that the Sony Open would have the best golfers, like Tiger Woods, competing at least once every two years.

col a house, not sure about how expenditures are for bowls, but i think each team is alloted so much for expenses for that bowl game. i don’t know if the team gets to keep all the money allotted for expenses and if there is a savings, then the team keeps the extra. to me this makes sense for a bowl bound team. they get to use and save the expense money at their discretion, not the bowl or conference

I have seen pics of OLM doing kooling down stretches and technique drills and have reports of the weight training. But with the exception of the waikiki beach am sprints (which didnt ID any OLM) supervised by tommy h. I havent seen OLM partaking in agility drills, run endurance or sprints….but than again, I have been on and off the rock in the past 2 mos ….please advise if anyone can furnish info on the run-conditioning efforts for OLM this summer training cycle….thanx.

For some reason, the In-N-Out burgers never seem to make it to Hawaii…they wouldn’t be the same after a long flight so it best that Lori and I polish them off quickly. Momo can get the burgers anytime when he can visit San Diego.

Tiger has won all three pga tournaments sponsored by players–the Arnold Palmer Invitational in April, The Jack Nicklaus memorial and the Tiger Woods At&T at Congressional.
Each time, these tournaments have been succeeded by a Major Championship in which Woods has lost–the Masters and US Open….and now, the British Open at Turnberry, Scotland.
Tiger has never played at Turnberry and the course is unfriendly to inaccurate drives off the Tee and littered with moon-size sand bunkers that are more reminiscent of B-52 bomb craters. The course is laid out along the rugged west coast of Scotland without a tree in sight except for these montrous no-slope bunkers and nasty thick-textured dry rough. Yes, there is an actual lighthouse on the course and the lanscape is more suited for a Stephen King set than it is for Steve Spielberg.
Whatever the view at ground zero and horror that awaits the field, the first to Tee begins in 8 days, 20 hours and 56 minutes from now….stay tuned–the hunt for the Claret Jug may be turn into another Tiger Quest….

school officials who complain about increased expenses can reduce it by decreasing the number of “official party members” – as for the bowl commitments, complain the to bowl committee who are making the ludicrous requirements of number of hotel rooms each team must purchase, etc.
What “official” functions must be attended and why spouses must be there?
as I see it, part of the problem is the actual bowl committee who place unreasonable requirements on participating teams, hotels who jack up the prices just because they know that schools must stay at their hotel, teams that bring along a lot of “garbage” to the game, etc.
further, what about the NCAA deleting bowl games that are consistently loss leaders? is this not what priviate business do?

Why is it so important to be selected to a bowl game ( other than a BCS game ) if the school will lose thousands of dollars by participating? Big whoopty do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For a bowl like the Hawai‘i Bowl, the payout is supposed to be $750,000. From that, the hotel (there’s a minimum stay of five or six days), meals, ground transportation and tickets are deducted. Then the school has to pay out bonuses and gifts, etc. UH doesn’t get stuck with airfare, so it does a lot better than visiting team, which can only hope to break even.
For non-BCS bowls, the experience is the reward. Well, that and the recruiting pitch. It’s not supposed to be a money-maker.

Only the bowls with BIG payouts (like the BCS bowls) do things like require spouses to attend. Do you even hear about the Hawaii Bowl or other lesser paying bowls requiring those types of things?
If the NCAA is going to delete bowl games, it will look for the bowls paying the least amount of money that requires the most in travel costs for visiting teams. That means that the Hawaii Bowl will be one of the first to go!
Attending a bowl game is VERY important for recruiting, for future season ticket sales, and too keep boosters (especially the big money donors) happy.

Doesn’t even UH claim a loss when attending the Hawaii Bowl? If that is the case, how could a C-USA team do anything but lose a huge amount of money by attending? The Pac-10 won’t give the Hawaii Bowl a higher pick because of the payout–they will support the bowls that actually help them make a profit first.
