Defensive end Veni Manu will grayshirt, joining the Warriors in January.

Safety Spencer Smith invited slotback Kealoha Pilares to spend three weeks training in Georgia. Smith spent a couple of minutes with the Warrior Beat detailing the schedule:
Where they will train:
“My old high school has a really good weight room. My speed trainer has a nice gym where I work out. He has a lot of good machines for speed. He has a little track in the back, a little turf thing upstairs. He’s got pretty much everything you need for speed training. We’ll time on the 40 before we leave, probably laser time.”
skThe heat is on.
“People think it’s humid in Hawai‘i, but it’s nothing like it is down South. You stand outside and you sweat. I remember working, selling landscaping rocks, and I would sit in the A.C. and I would be sweating because it’s humid from outside. It’s pretty unbearable sometimes. It helps you feel in shape. I like it after, not during.”
The best place to eat?
“My mom’s cooking. She makes spaghetti, sesame chicken, fried rice and Indian curry. She has the recipe from one of our friends from India. It’s a family recipe. She gets the ingredients from an Indian store. It’s legit. It’s the real spices. It’s hot and spicy. Sometimes I’ve had to eat cereal for dinner because I wasn’t able to eat it because it was too hot.”
Favorite cereal?
“Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. Those are my cereals. I eat it with 2 percent milk. That’s my breakfast in the morning.”
Pilares will help out in the kitchen.
“Kealoha’s going to teach my mom how to make sticky rice so he can feel somewhat at home.”

Future Hall of Famer Junior Seau might replace Ray Lewis as one of the featured guests at Thursday’s fund-raiser at Luana Hills Country Club. Lewis was to appear at the dinner, which benefits UH’s football camps, and at the clinic on Kaua‘i this week. But he canceled after learning of the death of his best friend, Steve McNair.

Article in the Kauai paper mentions Colt will join the coaches for the free clinics on Kauai on Wednesday. They should get a great turnout!

Theresa Koki of the county’s anti-drug office said former UH quarterback Colt Brennan will be at both of the Wednesday football clinics.

He’ll join Hawai‘i coach Greg McMackin and the Warrior football coaching staff at the free clinics that start today.

The McNair story is starting to turn into a sad story. Not that any murder isn’t, but this is looking like one of those really pointless ones.

  26. Garret July 6, 2009 6:02 am

I didn’t realize that New England just got a new special teams coach and he has ties to the long snapper that is competing with Jake Ingram for the starting spot.

Scott O’Brien, who had worked for Belichick in Cleveland from 1991-95, was named the Patriots’ new special teams coach on Feb. 3. O’Brien enters his 19th NFL season in 2009, and spent the last two seasons as Denver’s special teams coordinator.

Current Patriots who have worked with O’Brien in the past swear by him and his approach, saying he inspires confidence and loyalty.

That group includes new long snapper Nathan Hodel, who worked with O’Brien briefly earlier in his career, and said he wouldn’t be in New England without O’Brien.

“Once I became available, he kind of got in contact with my agent and kind of set it up to come out here and talk to him,” Hodel said. “I’m real appreciative of that, because I just had knee surgery and thought it might be a few months before anybody called, and a day later I was on the phone and getting set up to come out here. I’m real appreciative of that.

“That just makes me work that much harder — that someone is going to put their word out there for you. That makes you want to not only succeed for yourself and the team, but for that coach as well.”

Although my dad was a professional photographer during my growing-up years, I did not like to have my picture taken. Too ugly and too fat – nothing has changed except that now I get to add too old to the list of reasons why I disappear or hide behind someone whenever someone calls for a group picture.

Ralph – mahalo for confirming the date of the Central Arkansas game. Since Myki was sitting about 15 feet away, there was no way I could have heard her response to your inquiry.

Once again, I have a computer problem, but this time it deals with software. Can anyone here recommend a local business or consultant who can help me out. Please send your recommendaiton to swwod at hokudotcom. Hopefully your e-mail will arrive since the problems I’m having are with my e-mail program. I do NOT use Microsoft Outlook and do not want to switch to it.

Meant to post this answer a few days ago about issues & concerns with UH ticket policies. Address your concerns directly to Virgina Hinshaw and Jim Donovan at the same time. Although e-mail is faster, a “real” letter will receive more attention. Don’t forget to include your direct contact information. And, of course, please offer some suggestions to address your concerns.

For example, here’s a couple of ours: Anyone who purchases a ticket for an afternoon baseball game in Murakami Stadium should be able to attend a men’s volleyball or women’s or men’s basketball game later that same day for free. Or how about allowing a 50% discount in either venue if you show a ticket stub from another sport from the previous two weeks.

Off to work – have a great day.

    Congratulations to Bob Wagner.

Six Wittenberg University greats will be inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Honor during 2009 Homecoming Weekend ceremonies, Oct. 23-25. Joe Govern ’80, Sarah Jurewicz ’98, Sarah Newlin ’96, Bob Wagner ’69, Tom Young ’70 and longtime statistician Joe Clayton will join 178 other Wittenberg greats who have previously been inducted into the university’s Athletics Hall of Honor.

Bob Wagner was a two-time first-team All-OAC selection for his work as an offensive tackle on the football field, and a two-time all-region selection for his work as a defenseman on the lacrosse team. The football Tigers posted a 28-7 record during Wagner’s four years in the Red & White, including a 14-5 OAC record with one conference title. A team captain as a senior, Wagner capped his collegiate football career with honorable mention Lutheran All-America honors in 1968. He went on to a successful coaching career, including five years as a college swimming and diving coach at Muskingum and Wooster and two years as a high school football and track and field coach. He moved on to the University of Hawaii, where was a member of the football coaching staff for 20 years, including eight as the program’s head coach. He led the Rainbow Warriors to their first-ever NCAA Division I top-20 finish and the program’s first-ever bowl appearance, earning Honolulu Advertiser Sportsman of the Year twice, Hula Bowl Sportsman of the Year and Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1989. A native of Newark, Ohio, Wagner earned his degree in management from Wittenberg in 1969. He currently resides in Honolulu, Hawaii.

McNair’s girlfriend apparently hoped to marry him.

It started about six months ago, when former Titans quarterback Steve McNair exchanged phone numbers with Sahel Kazemi, a then-19-year-old waitress working at Dave & Buster’s restaurant at Opry Mills. Saturday, the relationship ended in tragedy, as the couple was found shot to death in a downtown condominium.

For her 20th birthday in late May, McNair got her a black Cadillac Escalade. Her family met him over sushi dinner that same weekend. Before that, Kazemi zipped around in his Bentley, telling family and friends about the generosity of her new beau — a former professional athlete.

There were trips, dinners, a promise of living together and ultimately marriage, according to Abdi

McNair took Kazemi, known as Jenny to friends, on trips to Key West in Florida, Las Vegas, California, Hawaii and McNair’s farm in Mississippi, with the couple seeing each other often, Abdi said.

  36. Garret July 6, 2009 7:38 am

Salmani talked to her sister every day and said she was very happy in her relationship with McNair.

“That’s why she was like, ‘OK, now you’re divorcing. We can date,’ ” Salmani said. “He told her, it was going to be finished, the whole divorce was going to be done, two weeks from yesterday.”

Although a check of Davidson County’s court records shows there is no divorce pending — at least in Nashville — McNair’s house is for sale

    http://www.blatanthomerism.com/2009/06/thank-god-for-golden-nugget.html

According to this blog the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas has the early point spreads for the upcoming season. The author of this article mentions that the odds makers look at the UH-UNLV game as one of the season’s biggest games…hhmm.

“However, the Nugget will always hold a special place in Homerism’s heart for giving him a joyous reminder that the college football season isn’t nearly as far away as it seems. ***For, today, the casino’s oddsmakers blessed gamblers with early point spreads for 2009’s biggest games”.***

(I guess it’s their prerogative if they want to declare UNLV-Hawaii one of the season’s biggest games, so let’s ignore that for now.)

    Tigerslam:
Tiger Woods has won three tournaments this year in eight-stroke starts but the tournament victories were hosted by Arnold Palmer (Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bayhill), Jack Nicklaus (Memorial at Murfield) and Tiger himself (AT&T at the Congressional).

“I remember when I first won Byron’s tournament, to have Mr. Nelson there on the 1st tee to shake your hand, and then when you came off the green to have him shake your hand there, as well, I mean, that’s something that you’ll always remember….same thing with Arnold and Jack” Woods said.
Than with a wry smile Tiger added,
“….(and) it was great shaking my hand today.
    I thoroughly enjoyed that (laughter)”.

  40. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 8:12 am

  41. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 8:13 am

I think Veni Manu’s grayshirting means UH is quite loaded at defensive end.

  42. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 8:15 am

As for redshirts, UH won’t announce those. They will sort of happen naturally during the season.

  43. labrat July 6, 2009 8:18 am

When I saw Veni at one game last year I thought I was watching Mel Purcell. I hope he works hard. I think he will be a future starter.

Congrats Coach Wags. I am still pissed and think you got a raw deal.

  44. warriorfanny2 July 6, 2009 8:19 am

    Tiger salutes a young warrior:

Walking down the 18th fairway next to Anthony Kim with the AT&T trophy a couple of strokes away from being claimed officially, Tiger said to AK,
“I enjoyed it, and there will be many more to come.
Just keep working hard, and we’ll do this for many more years”.

Indeed, AK came up a little short on the scorecard but scored bigtime in the minds and hearts of fans….he kept to his aggressive game plan for all 18 holes.

  45. J-Dog July 6, 2009 8:34 am

During yesterday’s golf they showed the military amputee who was being honored at the 18 tee. While walking to the 18th tee Tiger stopped and gave him a fist bump and a pat on the back, later they showed Anthony Kim and he just walked by as if they soldier wasn’t even there. I thought that was an oversight by AK and really bad camera timing. Jim Nantz even had to throw some commentary to cover AK.

  46. LutherVanDam July 6, 2009 8:35 am

Will there be an Aaron Brown sighting at the Warrior summer workouts today??

  47. warriorfanny2 July 6, 2009 8:36 am

the continuing flow of notable grayshirts are worthy stockpiles of inventory for future exchange.
The presumption, of course, is that these athletes will use their time wisely to prepare for the classroom AND to work hard on their diet, conditioning, agility, speed and weight training. It is a gift of time if properply utilized and as we have seen from others, can pay off in bigtime….but, we have also seen many flop!

The point being made is that there are no guarantees except for the character and discipline of the athlete himself.

For the overzealous fan, the expectation can only come after the grayshirts-redshirt year–two years down the road. This system takes time–it is the stock equivalent of the futures….however, if the young athlete is highly motivated, the return value will be more than worth the wait….be careful in your expectation and like all futures, keep a discerning eye on its appreciation, if any.

  48. labrat July 6, 2009 8:39 am

  50. warriorfanny2 July 6, 2009 8:50 am

Tiger Woods was the official host of the AT&T Tournament.
It was his tournament and that 18th tee moment that captured the fairway walk was scripted for TV to dramatize the profound thanks Tiger and sponsors have for our military for making sacrifices for our country.
It was for staged for Tiger to walk alongside the soldier in the wheel chair!

Moreover, in defense of AK, he was all over the course and club high-fiving and low-fiving every fan, military man and woman who reached for him….I would have to say, AK was the most congenial player on the course and club during the six-day event….he loves the attention, to the extent of acknowledging fans on the green before a crucial putt… when he made a bogey on the front-nine to lose the lead to Tiger, he reached into the gallery to sign a red-white-blue cap that a little girl stuck out from the crowd and patted her hair.

  51. warriorfanny2 July 6, 2009 9:31 am

difficult to spec on veni manu, but, tony t. would know cuz he meets w mac & staff to discuss these matters on an ongoing basis and micro manages the position depth charts to determine gaps and flows for current and future position charts….good organizational set-up and neccessary to prevent future position shortfalls in any given year….

    Re-Veni Manu Gray Shirting

I don’t like this decision at all. With 6 DE graduating next year wouldn’t it have been wiser to give the future DE player(s) reps, now, so the team has something to build on in the future. Come next year, gulp, what’ll the team’s depth chart look like at DE. Say, for example,if this were a baseball team and your team is overloaded with outfielders that are seniors, whereas some of the outfielders that are seniors aren’t going to see much playing time anyway–would you keep them all, or cut a few and make room for the younger underclassmen entering the program? Yes, cut them. I would have thought a healthier picture for the team would be, yes, cut a senior DE and make an opening for a newer player(s) so they are gaining the needed valuable reps and experience so they can fortify this position (DE) in the future. As a result, come next year the depth at DE will be very thin. And it wouldn’t surprise me to see the staff scurrying off in recruiting for 2-3 JC DE. Veni is a resource-there is a lot of upside to getting him into the picture quickly because of the lack of depth that UH is going to see next year. The staff has to recognize on how to individually cultivate each recruit. So there’s a harvest at the end of the road. They should also recognize that one shoe doesn’t fit to all new recruits, where they are automatically gray shirted. Potentially each gray shirt is giving up a minimum of 5 years. And maybe 6 years of their life to the football program if they incur any hardships (injuries) along the way, which I think is a steep sacrifice and where I think it can turn off recruits from coming into this program if they know the staff has a proclivity to gray shirt it’s incoming freshmen recruits.

    UH DEFENSE: DEPTH CHART

    Left end

    1. Brashton Satele (Sr.)

    2. Elliott Purcell (Jr.), Cameron Allen-Jones (Sr.)

    3. Victor Clore (Sr.)

    4. Tua Mahaley (Sr.)

    Right end

    1. Fetaiagogo Fonoti (Sr.)

    2. Alasi Toilolo (So.)

    3. Liko Satele (So.)

The gun that killed McNair was illegally purchased by his 20-year-old girlfriend (she didn’t have the permit required for those under 21) recently.

The gun recovered at the scene of the deaths of Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi was purchased by Kazemi recently, Metro police have confirmed.

Federal law prohibits anyone under 21 from purchasing a handgun from a licensed dealer.

Kazemi did not have a carry permit; Tennessee requires a person to be 21 to have carry permit.

    roysan16,

Thank you for posting the early Vegas lines. One thing to keep in mind is that the lines don’t necessarily reflect what the casino thinks will happen–they just reflect what the casino thinks that the gamblers are thinking. Fans tend to be biased towards their team, so UNLV fans would tend to favor their team.

I would expect that the betting line would shrink from that touchdown, barring injury or other problems at Washington State.

  70. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 11:00 am

    Rink is a junior.
The other DEs, for down the road, are Alema Tachibana and Waylon Lolotai. Jake Heun also could slide to defensive end.

  75. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 11:18 am

    I assume you can.

  76. Colomaohana July 6, 2009 11:20 am

    Morning, almost afternoon, gang!

  77. Slugger July 6, 2009 11:20 am

Good thing you’re coming to the dinner here, MsLiz, so you can see Colt.

Looking forward to the Princess’ video w/ Nasti expanding his repertoire.

Living in the Ozarks during the summer was brutal without A/C. 89% humidity. I’d be in the house in a bikini dripping sweat, not a nice picture. Hope the guys don’t lose too much weight training in Georgia. Mom’s home-cooking should help. If we were playing Central Arkansas in Arkansas, Spencer & Kealoha would have an edge.

Have a good day, everyone! Esme & out…

  78. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 11:22 am

Princess Leila also has a video interview with Colt that will post in about an hour.

Peanut butter Captn’ Crunch – hands down!!

That plate lunch reminded me of the one I had at L&L in Kona – Pig ‘n cabbage, lau lau, 2 scoops rice, 1 scoop mac salad – and terri burger! Hmm…not enough startch.

Hope Colt has a great pre-season and proves he can be the undisputed ‘skins back-up.

Great seeing Garret yesterday. He only lives about 15-20 minutes from the golf resort my tournament was at. Glad he didn’t mention the self-inflicted wound I received on Saturday from my lob wedge making friends with the bridge of my nose.

    UH vs UNLV TIX:

The clock is ticking. PLEASE get your payments to me by July 20. Go to SeveM’s site for mailing instructions. If I don’t have payment by the 20th, or haven’t heard from you of your intention of still wanting the tickets, they will be released and made available on a first-come, first-serve basis to those folks on the waiting list.

Also, I purchased these tickets for Tsai-kos and am charging face value. If you can’t attend the game, make the tickets available to others for face value. Not too cool if I see them on StubHub, Craig’s list, etc. for more than face value.

I can always be found at rich2176 at that yahoo place……..

I wish that the BC Lions’ QB had taken a little more of the blame on himself instead of pointing fingers at RGM and the OL. Others can make excuses for him (like his coach already has), but I like it when QBs take responsibility for losses (like Colt did) instead of point the finger at others.

“We can’t execute our offence with the quarterback on his back, and when we drop balls. We can’t make excuses because by the time the season’s over we’re going to make so many damn excuses we’re going to be out of the playoffs.

“We’re supposed to execute. This is professional football.”

It was what you’d expect for a regular season CFL opener, but a lot worse for the Lions. Nine sacks allowed. Seven turnovers. Six fumbles. And the amazing part was if not for a missed catch by Ryan Grice-Mullen behind coverage late in the circus, the Lions nearly went to overtime.

Colt watch part 2! From a certain 4-lettered sports network:

Will Colt Brennan start in this league?
    July 6, 2009 6:38 PM
    Posted by ESPN.com’s Matt Mosley

I’ve always been told that Colt Brennan’s a supremely confident guy, but I haven’t spent a lot (any) time around him to verify that. But in reading his quotes this offseason, it’s obvious that he’s not bringing a hat-in-hand approach to the quarterback competition. When Jake Luce of Redskins.com asked Brennan what he could do to help Jason Campbell “excel,” here’s what he said:

“It’s about pushing Jason to be a better quarterback,” said Brennan. “It’s about Jason knowing that other quarterbacks on the roster are ready to come in if there’s an injury.

“Considering all the things that have happened this offseason, I think you can see Jason is much more driven than he was last year. I think last year he was trying to get comfortable in this offense. This year, you can tell he’s got a lot more determination in what he wants to do and what he wants to become. In this league it all comes down to what happens on Sunday.

“For me, I don’t know how much Jason and Todd will play in the preseason, but I know I’m going to play a lot. I think if I can have another good preseason, it will put me in the driver’s seat for people to continue to recognize me as a starting quarterback in the NFL one day.”

Hmm. Am I the only one who didn’t realize Brennan was “in the driver’s seat” for people recognizing him as a potential NFL starter? I think he has a legitimate shot to beat out Todd Collins for the backup role, but it might not happen in training camp. If Brennan has an excellent preseason, then he could certainly push Collins. But if something happened to Campbell right now, I’d still be more comfortable with Collins at the helm.

What do you guys think? Would you like to read more about Larry Weisman? Do we think Campbell is pleased to hear that the young Brennan will be “pushing” him?

Mosley, you fool! Do not anger Colt! More importantly, do not anger Liz! You know not the wrath that will be unleashed upon you.

I don’t know why these folks are constantly questioning Colt when he has the numbers to prove what a great QB he is (not just yards which might be attributed to the offensive system, but the accuracy cannot be ignored)… and then they go bonkers for a one-year wonder like Mark Sanchez? Am I missing something here?

  102. PowderPuff July 6, 2009 1:25 pm

ST and Princess, nice work on the Colt trail. Can’t wait to tune in for an early lunch tomorrow.

Kekoa and team, thank you for the gathering on Saturday. It was nice to see everyone – and meeting Ronnie, too!

BTW – that photo of AJoe was AWESOME!

  103. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 1:47 pm

Too bad Colt entered the draft a year early. He would have been Mark Sanchez.

  104. Garret July 6, 2009 1:50 pm

The Arizona Daily Star has an article about Tuipulotu’s transfer to UH. There is a good reason why he was down on the depth chart (listed as 3rd team NT in some places)–he was injured so badly that he was planning to sit out this season.

“I missed just being able to look into the stands and see people I know personally, not just people that like me because I’m a football player,” Tuipulotu said today. “I missed playing in front of people that I know, people I appreciate. My parents couldn’t ever come out and see me play, and that (stunk).”

Tuipulotu batted shoulder problems in 2007 and “turf toe”, a hyperextension of his big toe’s metatarsophalangeal joint, in 2008.

He underwent shoulder surgery this spring, and is currently facing a yet—to-be diagnosed elbow problem.

Tuipulotu is so hurt that he was planning to redshirt at the UA this fall just to get healthy. Instead, he’ll join a Hawaii program that is two years removed from a Bowl Championship Series game.

  105. Garret July 6, 2009 1:52 pm

    ST,

Mom will be watching my sister’s 3 kids and my Dad will either be helping her out or working for free (again!) at Olomana school. I’m sure that they would love to attend your show someday, but for now I’m just happy that their computer is fixed up so that they can watch it.

  106. Garret July 6, 2009 1:54 pm

Skip Holtz calls out other schools who schedule weak nonconference opponents.

Skip Holtz, on the other hand, confident in East Carolina’s back-to-back upsets over Virginia Tech and West Virginia last year and an upcoming non-conference gauntlet including West Virginia, North Carolina and Virginia Tech, is not quite as conciliatory as his dad:

“There are a lot of people who play nobody and then beat their chest and go ‘Look at us, we’re 11-1,’” Holtz said.

  107. Garret July 6, 2009 1:55 pm

The Yahoo article of course mentions UH’s 2007 schedule.

Hawaii’s rise on top of a historically awful schedule in ’07 is the ultimate case of slumming your way to the top, but last year offered a less dramatic example of record trumping merit, when each of the following teams spent a healthy chunk of the season in the polls and finished with multiple votes at the end:Hawaii’s rise on top of a historically awful schedule in ’07 is the ultimate case of slumming your way to the top, but last year offered a less dramatic example of record trumping merit, when each of the following teams spent a healthy chunk of the season in the polls and finished with multiple votes at the end:

  108. Garret July 6, 2009 1:55 pm

The article slams BSU’s schedule last season.

Boise State. The Broncos earned their marquee win at Oregon (after the Ducks were reduced to a third-string, true freshman quarterback, but that’s no excuse for the implosion of the Oregon defense), but the rest of the Broncos’ schedule combined for all of three wins over “Big Six” conference opponents (Louisiana Tech over Mississippi State; Fresno State over UCLA and Rutgers, before the Bulldogs proceeded to drop four WAC games).

  109. Garret July 6, 2009 1:56 pm

The article slams BSU’s schedule this season and takes a shot at the WAC in the process.

Boise State. Actually, the Broncos deserve some credit for adding a competent non-conference game against Tulsa, but they’ll continue to top any list along these lines as long as they remain the WAC’s one-trick pony. Again, Boise gets Oregon, this time at home, but the question remains: Does any other team have so much riding on a single game?

  110. Garret July 6, 2009 1:57 pm

The article concludes by discussing UH’s schedule this season. I do like the projection that UH could be 10-1 to start the season, though…

Hawaii. The Warriors’ toughest non-conference date early on is at Washington State, opening the door to a possible 9-2 or 10-1 start with a split or better agains Louisiana Tech, Fresno State, Nevada and Boise State within the WAC. Wisconsin saves the non-con slate from complete embarrassment in December, but UH could be already be riding high on the wave of cupcakes by then.

good afternoon tsaikos. just talking last week about the lpga letting their commissioner go and voila!!!!!, they are asking her to resign. bivens has been a sore sport for the lpga, but the spot has now become cancerous and could be fatal for the lpga unless they cut her out. one of her biggest downfalls is that she had no knowledge of asian culture or how business is conducted by asians and she let her ego (stupidity) show when she made it mandatory that the lpga golfers be fluent in english. i don’t see the nba, major league bb, nhl, or any other pro sport requiring their players to be fluent in english.

  124. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 4:41 pm

    Re: Colt.
Meant he was born too early.
He would have fared better if he were eligible in this QB-thin draft .

besides that, my favorite lpga player mw, could use another course in public speaking, you know.

  126. whitey July 6, 2009 4:45 pm

this year the warriors will have a problem when they travel. who will be the 65 players going???? but next year, it will be a compound problem with a truly depthful of players. BUT, isn’t that a great problem to have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. whitey July 6, 2009 4:51 pm

ok, ST, is coach Mc back and will we see another one or two commits this week????

  128. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 4:52 pm

There isn’t an NCAA limit on non-conference trips, but I think economics will dictate otherwise.
The key is to make sure that they limit support staff, not players.

  129. djmitcho July 6, 2009 4:53 pm

Ok, just planting a seed into the minds of those who like to partake of fuud. I have about a 6 hour layover in HNL on Wednesday, August 5. My flight doesn’t get in til about noon, so would anyone be intrested in a late lunch CC?

But if Colt was a year later, with refining his talent, he would of missed the 2006 season with Nasti blocking for him and taking the hand off for ultimate yards. Plus the receivers. It all fell into place in his favor
My point. Colt was in the perfect set up for the NFL Draftan who chose him.
The Redskins will tune his mechanics for a needed long term NFL future

  134. Mad Dog July 6, 2009 5:06 pm

Sports Illustrated named Punahou as the top athletic program in the nation for the second year in a row. That speaks highly of not only Punahou, but Hawaii sports.

In his 11 years as athletic director at the Honolulu’s Punahou School Tom Holden never decorated his school’s gym walls or outfield fences with championship banners. State titles, of which there have been 61 over the last four years, hold a place in Buff ‘n Blue lore, but that’s in the trophy case. “We just congratulate among ourselves,” said Holden, who retired last Thursday. “Nothing public.”

Punahou’s 19 state titles during the 2008-09 school year were a nice retirement gift for Holden. Now he can add being named Sports Illustrated’s top high school program for the second consecutive year. To come up with our top 10, as well as our top programs in each state, we looked for state championships and Division-I scholarship athletes and success on and off the field. Punahou was at the head of the class.

On the mainland, Jesuit High (Portland, Ore.), won seven state titles to rank just behind Punahou. Throughout the country and the District of Columbia, SI.com found schools that exemplified excellence in athletics during all seasons. Here is our top 10:

    1. Punahou (Honolulu, Hawaii)

    Enrollment: 1,732
State titles in 2008-09: Baseball, football, tennis (boys and girls), air riflery (boys and girls), cross country (girls), canoe paddling (mixed), soccer (girls), swimming (girls and boys), wrestling (boys and girls), judo (boys and girls), track (girls), volleyball (boys), water polo (girls), golf (boys)

When he presented linebacker Manti Te’o with the first national linebacker award last fall, Chicago Bears legend Dick Butkus told the Notre Dame-bound bruiser, “You better show me something because a lot of people wanted me to give this trophy to an Ohio or Texas kid.” That night, Te’o ran over seven tacklers while playing tailback, and proved his case. By the end of the season, Te’o earned his first football title and the school had a national face to put on its parochial accomplishments. State titles were won in a number of sports, including baseball, basketball and wrestling (the school’s first). Tennis star Kristin Lim capped her career with a fourth consecutive girls singles title. The baseball team showed the most resilience. Mired in a slump and holding a record of 12-10 at midseason, the hardballers rallied to win a state title and exceed expectations.

  147. A-House July 6, 2009 7:00 pm

    ST:

    your #130 – “economics will dictate”……..

some posts on “bowl games”, especially the WAC, indicate that most teams participating are losing money.

are they losing money because the team takes too many “non-paying guests” in their official travel party? if so, then take only what is absolutely necessary for the game. the days of “I deserve to go because I am………..” should be over and the team and conference can become profitable.

also, is it necessary that “conference officials” travel higher than economy class on airlines? are they willing to “cut expenses” by not flying business or first class? or, staying in “upgraded” hotel rooms? basic question is how far are the conference officials willing to share the economic pain. same goes for game officials/referees who are flown all over the country and stay in “upscale” hotels. seems to me a lot of egos!!!

speaking of bowl games, clue me in on this – when the bowl game says payout is $750,000 – does this mean each team gets $750,000 or is this amount split evenly by the 2 teams?

  148. roysan16 July 6, 2009 7:02 pm

    Re-LPGA

No LPGA tour events in Hawaii for 2010. Read recently that they were all canceled. This is a shame. It reflects on how the sponsors of these tournaments are also burdened with the downward trend in the economy.

On another note: The LPGA requiring it’s members to play every golf tournament at least once in every two years is a rule I wish the PGA would adopt. What this would mean if the PGA had this rule is that the Sony Open would have the best golfers, like Tiger Woods, competing at least once every two years.

you still going be in Hawaii? wow, thats a long vacation.

  151. whitey July 6, 2009 7:17 pm

col a house, not sure about how expenditures are for bowls, but i think each team is alloted so much for expenses for that bowl game. i don’t know if the team gets to keep all the money allotted for expenses and if there is a savings, then the team keeps the extra. to me this makes sense for a bowl bound team. they get to use and save the expense money at their discretion, not the bowl or conference

  152. whitey July 6, 2009 7:19 pm

be interesting to see how much the “freebies to nola” donated back to uh foundation, na koa

    A-House: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/bowl-schools-last-1949560-bcs-games

Bowl payout figures can be deceiving. Not only are most payouts split with other conference schools after the participant’s expense allowance, but most bowl deals require schools to buy thousands of tickets to resell to their fans. Selling those tickets isn’t a problem if your team is in one of the five BCS games. But schools in other games usually end up eating thousands of dollars, often hundreds of thousands, worth of tickets.

“The ticket allocating is killing us,” said Georgia Tech’s Mayfield. The Yellow Jackets ate $400,180 in unsold tickets for last year’s Gator Bowl. “When you have a season-ticket base of 25,000 and the bowl is making you sell 10,000 to 13,000 tickets, getting 50 percent of those season-ticket holders to go to a bowl can be unrealistic.”

Shawn Withy-Allen’s team unfortunately lost in the playoffs tonight and their season is over.

The Southern Division Champion Columbus Lions (12-3) of the American Indoor Football Association defeated the Fayetteville Guard 45-36 on Monday night to advance into Conference Championship where they will take on the Reading Express.

With key interceptions and fumbles, the Columbus defense managed Fayetteville to only 185 yards of total offense while running 52 plays. Comprised of an interception by defensive back Jason Perry and fumble recoveries by Darin Damron and Justen Rivers, the Guard was held to only converting four of seven red-zone trips into scores. The defense got after Guard QB Shawn Withy-Allen with four sacks holding him to 15 of 27 passing for 154 yards and three touchdowns.

  171. LutherVanDam July 6, 2009 8:36 pm

I don’t get it…most conference comissioners and university presidents are on record in opposition of a college football playoff system so they can uphold the tradition of rewarding a 6-6 team by sending them to a bowl game AND to lose $money$? You lose that bowl game, you’re now 6-7 and thousands of $$ in the hole. Yeah, lovely reward.

JD gave an update on season ticket sales in the SportsHawaii chat today.

Last year we had about 27,700 season tickets sold when we kicked off our first game. Based on the renewals as of the end of June, we are about 80% of the accounts renewed and 81% of the tickets renewed (not counting the student tickets). Prior to today — the first day of sales for new season tickets — we had deposits from about 200 individuals for new season tickets (this should translate roughly into about 500 new season tickets being sold). My best guess at this point will be that we end up selling between 23,000-24,000 season tickets for this year.

  181. Garret July 6, 2009 8:43 pm

I agree with JD that ticket sales should be helped as the season goes along because both BSU and Fresno State visit Aloha Stadium. That is a much better WAC home schedule for ticket sales than the alternate year.

While this decline is not unexpected because of the downturn in the economy, I’m still hopeful that individual game ticket sales will be better than average because we have Boise State, Fresno State, Navy and Wisconsin on our home schedule. Overall, having good single game and walk-up sales can raise our revenue substantially especially in light of the fact that season ticket holders receive about a 20% discount per game when they purchase a season ticket package.

I have seen pics of OLM doing kooling down stretches and technique drills and have reports of the weight training. But with the exception of the waikiki beach am sprints (which didnt ID any OLM) supervised by tommy h. I havent seen OLM partaking in agility drills, run endurance or sprints….but than again, I have been on and off the rock in the past 2 mos ….please advise if anyone can furnish info on the run-conditioning efforts for OLM this summer training cycle….thanx.

  189. Garret July 6, 2009 9:12 pm

    whitey,

For some reason, the In-N-Out burgers never seem to make it to Hawaii…they wouldn’t be the same after a long flight so it best that Lori and I polish them off quickly. Momo can get the burgers anytime when he can visit San Diego.

We also got 4 tickets to the Mets game in San Diego when they are doing some San Diego Hall of Fame event at the Padres game…my kids only cared that a sticker (that probably cost less than a penny) also was in the bag of prizes they got today for reading 20+ books recently.

Tiger has won all three pga tournaments sponsored by players–the Arnold Palmer Invitational in April, The Jack Nicklaus memorial and the Tiger Woods At&T at Congressional.
Each time, these tournaments have been succeeded by a Major Championship in which Woods has lost–the Masters and US Open….and now, the British Open at Turnberry, Scotland.
Tiger has never played at Turnberry and the course is unfriendly to inaccurate drives off the Tee and littered with moon-size sand bunkers that are more reminiscent of B-52 bomb craters. The course is laid out along the rugged west coast of Scotland without a tree in sight except for these montrous no-slope bunkers and nasty thick-textured dry rough. Yes, there is an actual lighthouse on the course and the lanscape is more suited for a Stephen King set than it is for Steve Spielberg.
Whatever the view at ground zero and horror that awaits the field, the first to Tee begins in 8 days, 20 hours and 56 minutes from now….stay tuned–the hunt for the Claret Jug may be turn into another Tiger Quest….

  194. A-House July 6, 2009 9:37 pm

    Jason or any one:

back to my basic question, if the bowl payout is $750,000 does each team get half of $750,000 or each team/confernce gets $750,000?

school officials who complain about increased expenses can reduce it by decreasing the number of “official party members” – as for the bowl commitments, complain the to bowl committee who are making the ludicrous requirements of number of hotel rooms each team must purchase, etc.

What “official” functions must be attended and why spouses must be there?

as I see it, part of the problem is the actual bowl committee who place unreasonable requirements on participating teams, hotels who jack up the prices just because they know that schools must stay at their hotel, teams that bring along a lot of “garbage” to the game, etc.

further, what about the NCAA deleting bowl games that are consistently loss leaders? is this not what priviate business do?

monku, monku, monku but who seeks to change the system? is not the NCAA made up of members of certain schools? why can’t they change the requirements? is “ego” that big??????????

Why is it so important to be selected to a bowl game ( other than a BCS game ) if the school will lose thousands of dollars by participating? Big whoopty do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  195. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 9:42 pm

For a bowl like the Hawai‘i Bowl, the payout is supposed to be $750,000. From that, the hotel (there’s a minimum stay of five or six days), meals, ground transportation and tickets are deducted. Then the school has to pay out bonuses and gifts, etc. UH doesn’t get stuck with airfare, so it does a lot better than visiting team, which can only hope to break even.

  196. Stephen Tsai July 6, 2009 9:43 pm

For non-BCS bowls, the experience is the reward. Well, that and the recruiting pitch. It’s not supposed to be a money-maker.

  197. Garret July 6, 2009 9:44 pm

    A-House,

Only the bowls with BIG payouts (like the BCS bowls) do things like require spouses to attend. Do you even hear about the Hawaii Bowl or other lesser paying bowls requiring those types of things?

If the NCAA is going to delete bowl games, it will look for the bowls paying the least amount of money that requires the most in travel costs for visiting teams. That means that the Hawaii Bowl will be one of the first to go!

Attending a bowl game is VERY important for recruiting, for future season ticket sales, and too keep boosters (especially the big money donors) happy.

  198. Garret July 6, 2009 9:46 pm

    ST,

Doesn’t even UH claim a loss when attending the Hawaii Bowl? If that is the case, how could a C-USA team do anything but lose a huge amount of money by attending? The Pac-10 won’t give the Hawaii Bowl a higher pick because of the payout–they will support the bowls that actually help them make a profit first.

The LPGA and the PGA are two seperate animus.

The PGA, USGA and WGC is now directed by the fedex standings and year ending playoffs in august and september……anything in the middle is directed by a player named tiger. quite frankly, tw calls the shot.
His name is on the marquee. Period. The rest follow.
Woods is consumed w other busy activities, such as his foundation work and activities which reach 10 million kids; sponsorship commits and other personal obligations–his schedule is tighter than a ticks a__ and very demanding, well, hopefully, you get the picture.
Woods has already said, if he plays in Hawaii, he will play only one tournament. eh, Kapalua is a grasshopper flight from O’ahu to see the great one and well worth the effort if u truly are a golf-packrat. trust me on this one, feel fortunate if tiger plays kapalua next JANUARY!

The LPGA is boring and lacks a big name card and is dropping in sponsorship.
In case you havent purused and noticed the players list, many r mono-syllabic and dominated by players south of the 38th parallel.
Colorful from a global perspective but it dont sell hotdogs and nike attire and accessories…..
