A couple of minutes with … Malcolm Lane

m41Right wideout Malcolm Lane, who attended an American high school in Germany, remembers what it was like to celebrate the 4th of July overseas.
“It was cool. There were a lot of Americans. Everybody did their thing. We always barbecued and invited a lot of people over. It was  no different from here, except the Germans weren’t celebrating. But you had thousands of Americans over there celebrating. But some of the Germans would shoot fireworks. Just because we were in Germany, it didn’t mean we couldn’t have an Independence Day party like everybody back home.”
Summer plans?
“I’m not going anywhere this summer. I’m going to work hard. Davone (Bess) and Colt (Brennan) will be out here. We’re going to throw the ball around. We’re going to have some fun.”
On catching Colt’s passes:
“It’s wonderful. He puts it on the money. The receivers like to go out and play catch with him. He’s so accurate, and he’s a very hard worker. He’ll help you get a lot better. He has a very good touch. If he needs to get a pass out fast, he’ll get it out fast. He puts the touch on it. He throws a great catchable pass. His passes are on point. He can pick out receivers very fast. He throws such a tight spiral. Everybody loves catching passes from Colt.”
Man cannot live on workouts alone.
“The best place to eat is on Ward (Avenue). I like the chicken lettuce wraps, and orange shrimp, and ginger chicken broccoli. I love the taste. The broccoli is so fresh. And the shrimp is so good. I love shrimp. I’m a seafood guy.”
Road thrill.
“In Florida, there are rivers running along the side of the road. You can throw your cage out there and catch crabs. The best way to prepare them is to steam them for, like, an hour.”

Ray Lewis, grieving the loss of his best friend, Steve McNair, has withdrawn as guest speaker for Thursday’s fund-raising dinner at Luana Hills Country Club. The event will help offset the cost of running UH’s summer camps.

The JC route is going to be tougher to navigate.
The NCAA is adding another math class and English course to the requirements for a junior-college student to transfer to a Division I school. JC students currently need to earn an associate degree and at least 48 transferrable credits.
One of the reasons many non-qualifiers — those who did not earn the NCAA’s corresponding qualifying  SAT score and grade-point average — decide to enroll in a JC is because they can play without redshirting or grayshirting.
But with the more demanding standards, it might take a JC an extra semester or two to amass enough credits. Instead of redshirting their first year, they will do it their third.

Malcolm Lane: Hope you have great year.

Get serious – quit hot-dogging in a game.

The refs are looking for any reason to throw a flag.

Good Luck to you and the team.

Call me lolo but looking at UH’s sked
I see a posb of going undefeated this reg season
Sure Wa st will be a stern test and LaTech will be a better team,
Nevada and Coach Tomey at home will be rough games but all are very winnable.
With FSU and Boise at home (with U st and NM st) we’ll have a real advantage over these teams and Navy.
My main concern will be CA, a bunch of big ol’ southern boys who just missed the cut at Arkansas or the other big southern schools.
Both lines at CA will bring a lot of Beef.
With the option, Navy will run our LBs ragged, gotta be ready for that.
Wisconson will prob come in needing a win to play in a bowl game, nuff said about that.
    my 2 cents

    Malcolm Lane,
Good luck this year… You are the lone Senior of the receiving corps this year, so I’m sure you will lead by example and take that pigskin to the house on numerous occasions. I have faith that you will do well, so believe in your abilities and screw everything else. It’s your time to shine so make it happen, captain! Au’ryte… Eh also, what place you talking about on Ward get that kine grinds?

  17. Pauoa Boy July 4, 2009 2:43 am

Glad to see Bruddah Colt and Davone back on the island helping out the rest of the boys. las vegas, I share in your optimism that our boys can go undefeated again. We have loads of potential and it’s just a matter of putting it all together on the field. I think Greg Alexander and the whole offense will put up Colt like numbers again. We got weapons all over the place, just gotta come up with a game plan to put em in the right places to score and score often! I’m sure Davone is giving the receivers loads of tips and pointers and Colt is working with Greg to be the next big time QB.

Happy Fourth of July to all!

    las vegas san-

Does the doghouse have wi-fi or broad band? Either way its good that you are able to post from there. I agree with your statement about the Warriors’ chances next season. Your wisdom is surpassed only by your ruggedly handsome skinny Kam Fongish good looks.

  25. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2009 6:35 am

The Fourth of July fire-bug strikes early on the slopes of beautiful Puowaena.

Errant fireworks set off by a couple of young neighborhood lads scorched nearly an acre or so not more than 50 yards from the nearest buildings, mine included. The blaze was in the grassy area just above the basketball courts. Many neighbors gathered on the courts to watch the fire and to see the heroic HFD arrive on the scene and quickly control the blaze. I took some very nice pictures of the whole episode and was going to send them to our blog host’s paper, only to be told there would be no room for the pics in today’s edition.

Two morals to this story: Pictures of fires aren’t such a “hot” item with the press around the Fourth of July. Also, it needs to be said, enjoy fireworks responsibly and have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2009 6:38 am

We’ll all look forward to “celebrating” many TD catches by young Mr. Lane this season. Nuff said.

    GO WARRIORS!

    Good Morning,

    Happy Fourth.

Taking a look at Michelle Wie. Currently she’s playing the third hole of the third round. On the first hole Michelle bogeyed. Second hole she parred. Her playing partner/ pairing-Suzann Pettersen is a very long hitter off the tees, about equal with Michelle. I hope Michelle’s ego isn’t affected, where she might try harder in out dueling Pettersen on the drives. My coaching to Michelle would be similar to what everyone else is thinking–stay within your game Michelle. At the start of the day she was -8 and 3 behind the leaders. She’ll need to shoot a 66-67 today to have a realistic shot of winning tomorrow.

A couple of minutes with … Malcolm Lane
July 4th, 2009 by Stephen Tsai

“In Florida, there are rivers running along the side of the road. You can throw your cage out there and catch crabs. The best way to prepare them is to steam them for, like, an hour.”

I must disagree Mr. Lane. The preferred method for me (and Rob25) is to eat those buggahs raw, slathered with Korean hot sauce! Wash it down with an ice cold Brewski, and life is Good!

  55. NoBackbone July 4, 2009 7:55 am

In a contest that Tsaikos can relate to, a record 68 ‘dogs in 10 minutes.

  56. FloridaTed July 4, 2009 7:56 am

Happy Fourth of July, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

We’re celebrating a Holiday that goes way beyond a simple reason to party.

The USA may have its faults, after all, it is populated by Humans, but one, huge, overiding fact remains, without the USA there would be no more democracy left in the world.

That alone is a huge reason to celebrate, at least for me.

  57. Kekoa July 4, 2009 7:59 am

wf2 ~ TC must begin to bounce back with some damage control. Rather than ducking into his cave, he should:

    1. Release an immediate statement to the press that offers a sincere apology to the young lady.

    2. This statement should acknowledge what the alledged incident was all about, and what his plans are to man up and do the responsible thing.

    3. Take whatever the consequences are and work harder to show by example his true colors. One of a hard working local boy who made an error in judgement during a moment of weakness, and is now doing his best to turn things around.

  58. FloridaTed July 4, 2009 8:00 am

    Tsai-Meister,

I love those “a few minutes with….” shortsels, nice way of bringing the Warriors closer to the Tsaikos.

  59. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 4, 2009 8:03 am

    Kekoa:

In response to your answer last night: I wasn’t even thinking about a “real” golf tournament but a fun event at the miniature course. Funds collected over & above the course’s entry fee could have gone either to the University’s Athletic Scholarship fund.or Doris Sullivan’s PIAA.

When I first brought up the idea up weeks ago, I asked if anyone else besides the two of us were interested; if so, I then offered to coordinate it. I think I did that three times. However, no one else indicated on the blog or in person any interest in a “tournament” so I put it aside.

Glad to hear that some sort of appetite-building activity will be taking place. We’ll play a couple of rounds at the mini-course and then stick our heads in the door to say “hi” to tolks before heading back to Kailua to check on our animals and walking on down to the beach to see the fireworks.

Time to go get ready for the Kailua Parade. DrDoc is riding with the donkeys while I’ll be walking with the Beach Access/Surfrider folks.

Where is Pauoa Boy now stationed? I gather from assorted statements here that he’s either in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Hope everyone has a safe & enjoyable holiday.

  60. MeiLing July 4, 2009 8:03 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Someone needs to tell Malcolm that he doesn’t have to steam crabs for an hour. Less than a half an hour will do. Wonder if they throw back the female crabs in FL? I miss eating the roe.

Sounds like a great QB camp at the Grand Wailea.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! Prayers out for all of those who serve to keep us independent.

  61. FloridaTed July 4, 2009 8:04 am

    Hi, Kekoa,

Are all the TC facts known? I haven’t seen many details.

  62. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2009 8:12 am

Whether TC did what was alleged will be a matter for the justice system.
But he’s a father, in his late 20s, and, yes, a role model.
People in their late 20s shouldn’t be around places where there are late-night fights.

  63. Kekoa July 4, 2009 8:13 am

Aloha FT ~ Words to live by my friend! Hope you are having a good day today and a safe celebration in your part of America. Continued good health to you sir, and (((hugs))) to the Mrs!

The Tsaiko’s will strike fear in the heart of a few golfers (mainly themselves) today at Kaneohe Bay View driving range.

I’ve warned friends and family on the Windward side to detour around the club house if they happen to be in or near the area. Hehehehe!

A Paramedic will be standing by (JJ), ready to administer medical assistance, or a brewski on demand.

I always felt that as a player, TC often didn’t get the proper credit he deserved.
And as a top prospect who chose to stay home, you want to give him a lot of slack.
    But sometimes … sheesh.

  67. FloridaTed July 4, 2009 8:21 am

Good point and the only real point in this debacle.

    Kekoa,

ST: Your #66 and #62 – good points! I appreciate it that TC, one of the top prospects here in Hawaii did stay home. Wish other players wold follow his example. I still feel players that go to ND, USC, UCLA etc are playing for ND, USC, UCLA and represent those schools, and not representing Hawaii.

Florida Ted – glad to see you posting more often.

Happy Fourth – one and all! Wish I could be hitting balls (unintentionally) at people down in Kaneohe but have to wander over to Arcadia and joining people at lunch more my vintage!

We eat, then hit golf balls?
Or do we hit golf balls, then eat?
Or do we eat while hitting golf balls?
Or do we just keep hitting the buffet line?

Yes, even during drills, he’s thinking interception.

If I were the guy, I’d drop this one and go find another.

Similar situation in fb … If you offer a QB, and he doesn’t respond,

then go offer a QB who WANTS to be on your team.

    ST ~

Wie hit golf balls, then eat.

➡ BG is in charge of the Golf Challenge. Each entrant may purchase a bucket of balls from the range office.

➡ Put 3 in their pocket for later, and hit the rest of the bucket for practice.

➡ Then, report to the official tee spot for the rules briefing and use those 3 balls they saved to shoot for record. The ladies will have a tee to hit from, and the men will have another. Everyone will hit with the 7 iron provided.

➡ A shot chart will be recorded with the best of those 3 balls plotted closest to the pin.

Note to Koakane: Closest to the pin, not the Gin!

    ST & ai-eee-soos:

ST, your #78 – I know you posted several days ago that Coach Mack stands by his offers and one needs to recognize his integrity and moral courage for his position.

however, as ai-eee-soos says in post #86, there is a time and place where Coach Mack needs to “drop back” and ask himself, “is it time to call the prospect and tell him the offer in null and void”.

with so many offers out there, Coach Mack must keep in mind what his needs are and how best to secure the services of the young student-athlete he envisions as those who can best help him achieve his goals – I see nothing wrong in pulling an offer if Coach Mack has been more than generous in time and space for a response.

btw, was Manley one of the 4 QBs that Coach Mack said I need a response ASAP?

  91. A-House July 4, 2009 10:55 am

Someone posted several days ago about taking 2nd best for the QB that was referred to Coach Mack by Erikson at Arizona State.

Could not help, but remember, long ago, that the Oklahoma coach called UH HC and asked if could use a QB. Response was no as he already had a good QB. QB offered was Troy Aikman.

The Oklahoma HC also missed out as Aikman transferred to UCLA.

  92. Piper's Son July 4, 2009 10:55 am

AM may be the greatest QB coming out of Hawaii (debatable, of course), but if he were the “girl” waiting for a better offer to the prom, I would tell him now – good luck and the offer is withdrawn. He had time to fish or cut bait. And MAC has given him the time to accept or reject.

But the time has come to withdraw the offer and to use the scholarship to someone who is willing to be a Warrior!

    A-House re #91.

    Yeah, I remember.

The Hawaii head coach was Dick Tomey

Tomey also turned away Kurt Gouveia, by offering only “an opportunity to walk on”.

Yup, Tomey, and Hawaii, missed out on Aikman and Gouveia.

    What a shame.

  118. Pride. July 4, 2009 2:06 pm

Why would a local Hawaii product transfer out of Arizona’s football program when he’s penciled in to start at NT this fall. Doesn’t make any sense. Hope it isn’t true. You’d like to see young men make commitments and stick to it. Like I said, I’m hoping that it’s just a rumor.

  119. WarriorBasketball July 4, 2009 2:07 pm

Read on (2) other Hawaii sports blogs that Kaniela Tuipolutu is considering transferring back to UH from Arizona. A blogger attached Kaniela’s MySpace profile and comments indicated that he intends to transfer back home to play for Hawaii. Kaniela was a former Defensive POY from Kahuku who played defensive tackle.

  120. Garret July 4, 2009 2:24 pm

I’ve just read through through 8+ stories on RGM’s game last night and only one mentioned RGM…but the article isn’t very complimentary, unfortunately.

But after cutting the Roughriders’ lead to 25-20, Pierce failed to connect with Ryan Grice-Mullen in the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Grice-Mullen was also guilty of not coming back to the ball when Omarr Morgan picked off a Pierce offering and rambled 32 yards to the Lions’ two-yard line. Running back Hugh Charles scored on the next play.

  121. Garret July 4, 2009 2:26 pm

Not much in terms of UH articles to post on this Holiday. A UH-BYU moment turned up as #1 on the list of top moments in BYU sports. As a UH fan I have a very different reaction to that moment…

Recently, Vai Sikahema, former BYU kick returner for the 1984 national champion football team, gave me his top three moments in BYU sports. In order:

    1. Kyle Morrell’s hit on Hawaii’s Raphael Cherry at the goal line to save the game for the Cougars during their national title run in 1984.

  122. Garret July 4, 2009 2:31 pm

Kaniela Tuipolutu was 4-star recruit from 2007, so if he transferred to UH he would have 2 years to play. He’s earned 2 letters at Arizona and is listed as 6’2″, 300 pounds.

  123. Garret July 4, 2009 2:33 pm

    Hoohiki,

I’m glad that you enjoyed the free play link last night about the homeless girl who is going to Harvard. For anyone who doesn’t know (though I think you already knew), you can click on my name to get the articles for any of the free play links.

  124. Garret July 4, 2009 2:35 pm

I hope that everyone has a great time tonight! Thank you to all who are currently serving our country or who has served our country in the past.

I wish that I could be there at the Tsaiko gathering. We’ll see the fireworks at Legoland–free and no problems parking, plus lots of entertainment for the kids before the fireworks.

  125. Hoohiki July 4, 2009 2:37 pm

    RE#78:
Manti did it right….UH offered but he politely declined, stated his reasons and moved on, and allowed UH to also move on. Didn’t keep UH hanging. But then again, UH wasn’t the first to offer and he had the “goods” not to be left “dateless” for the prom.

How long are any offers good for? For example if a recruit waited to accept, but the scholarships wasn’t available anymore, can he sue for not getting the spot that was promised? An offer is a promise that there’s a spot for him on the team right?

  126. Ralph July 4, 2009 2:55 pm

Tuipolutu came out third team after Arizona Spring workout. Mikaele is no. 1 NT. Beirne is also 3rd team at qb…Koehler is not part of the two deep depth chart out of Spring

  127. Ralph July 4, 2009 3:07 pm

Oops! Mikaele no longer #1, Horton is top dog at NT, then Mikaele, followed by Tuipoluto at 3rd team…

  128. Ralph July 4, 2009 3:10 pm

if the rumor is true and Kaniela transfers this fall to UH and redshirts, can he be given a scholarship that doesn’t count towards ’09 total but added to 2010 or does he pay his own way this fall and earns a scholarship in the spring if at all.

  129. A-House July 4, 2009 3:11 pm

On this Independence Day, to all of us who have served, to all that are now serving, and to all that will serve in the future, Bless the USA.

Many made the ultimate sacrifice, many came home with severe injuries and to this day have to live with them, many came home with “shadows” that will forever remain in their memories, and many came home with no physical injuries, but memories which will haunt them forever.

To all of us, thank you for the privilege and Bless the USA!

  130. Ralph July 4, 2009 3:11 pm

any word on what Koehler is doing? remaining at Arizona or transferring back to UH?

  131. Ralph July 4, 2009 3:13 pm

Shannon Smith left Arizona too, I forgot where Pride mentioned that he transferred to…why are our Hawaii talent bailing out of Arizona…Stoops? his assistant coaches? too hot, no beaches, poi better than tacos?

  132. Ralph July 4, 2009 3:16 pm

Kekoa what is on the buffet menu, ate a late lunch, may regret it if i am not hungry at 6:30 knowing the tsaikos don’t leave leftovers after the first pass in the buffet line.

  133. BowsForever July 4, 2009 3:19 pm

    Happy 4th, everyone!

As long as Lane can focus on the game and cut out the “celebratory” stuff, he’ll be all set for a standout senior season.

  134. Garret July 4, 2009 3:33 pm

According to Tuipulotu’s Myspace page, Arizona wouldn’t give him a release to play for Utah so he is going to UH instead.

  135. Garret July 4, 2009 3:34 pm

    Ralph,

Regarding your #128 post, transfers don’t count towards the limit of 25 for the recruiting year. They do count towards the 85 maximum.

  136. Garret July 4, 2009 3:40 pm

    Hoohiki,

I agree that it is best if recruits let UH know as soon as possible if they aren’t interested. I hate it when recruits take their visit and then say they aren’t interested…waste of time and money for UH and they could have used that time to recruit another player.

Offers to recruits often come with an expiration date or limits. For example, Mac can let the 4 QB recruits know that UH has room for 1 QB and the first to commit (Spain) will get the scholarship. Mack Brown at Texas one year offered 4 DBs scholarships and told them the first 3 to commit would get them. Often, a recruit gets an offer pulled (sometimes *after* they gave a verbal commit) after a higher-rated player at the same position commits.

Some players want to wait until they take their visits and do all of their due diligence. Those players most of the time are the top recruits, as they can afford to wait and they are often assured that the schools recruiting them will reserve a space for them even if the decision comes down to NLI day.

  137. madeinhawaii July 4, 2009 3:57 pm

Rumor mills says that Kaniela Tuipulotu is transferring to Hawaii. Looks like more and more of the boys just wanna come home to play.

One of Destin Stewart’s coaches found my blog entry about Destin committing to the Warriors and left this comment. I thought I should pass this along…I hope that Destin sees this, as he’d probably like to read this.

    Destin,

As your former little league coach of the OKC Maroon Panthers, I just want to let you know how proud I am of you. I still remember that little six year old that I would press hard to make mad so I could bring out your attitude and best potential. After being your coach for 7 years, I’m proud of the hard work that you continued to carry out through the conclusion of high school. Keep up the great work at Hawaii…Otherwise, I will bring you back and you will be running to the “Tree” for old times sakes. You used to hate the “Tree”.

    Sincerely,

    Coach Robbie

Police are treating McNair’s death as a murder-suicide…he apparently was involved with a 20-year-old woman. Police think she killed them and then killed herself. McNair’s wife is understandably shocked.

Police said McNair, 36, a retired Tennessee Titans star, was found on a sofa and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, whereas 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi had one to the head. A pistol was found near her body.

According to the Tennessean newspaper’s website, police are treating the case as a possible murder-suicide.

The website also said authorities towed away a black Cadillac Escalade that likely was involved in a traffic incident two days earlier. Kazemi was behind the wheel of an SUV of that description two days earlier, when she was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to take a breath test. McNair and Kazemi were registered as co-owners of the vehicle.

Police spokesman Don Aaron told the Associated Press that McNair’s wife, Mechelle, is “very distraught” and authorities do not believe she was involved.

  150. warriorfanny2 July 4, 2009 9:23 pm

Last year when Anthony Kim sank his last putt in the final round to go 65 and win the Congressional, Tiger Woods was watching at home on his couch.

This year, the host and defending champ will be squaring off, toe-toe, mano y mano as they both are knotted at 10-under and are paired together in the last group of the fourth and championship round.

    “I’m excited to be there,”
AK said, and it was evident the way he leaned into the microphone and smiled.
“I’m excited for the opportunity. There’s not too many chances you get to play against the best in the world at his golf tournament. I’ve won this tournament before, and I don’t see why I won’t have a good opportunity tomorrow.”

The 24-year old Kim is regarded as a future American star.
Something Tiger has acknowledged in his press conferences during tournament week.
“No doubt, AK will make an impact on the tour….he is one of the bright, young and coming talents”, Woods said.

Kim won at Quail Hollow and Congressional last year and was a force in the Ryder Cup victory.

For AK, this is a dream he has imagined from youth to be paired with Woods in the final round and to drain the winning putt while Tiger watched.

“Man, they were going in a lot,” Kim said, laughing.

Tiger himself had the same dreams as a kid but instead imagined he was playing against Nicklaus, Palmer, Hogan and Snead.
When Woods was asked about the meaning of different heroes between the two, he chuckled and said,
    “Im aging….that’s what it means”.

AK sounded every bit as confident as Tiger was in the 1997 Master’s when he was paired with defending champ Nick Faldo.

“I expect he’s going to be wearing a red shirt and be out there ready to go,” Kim said.
“And I’ll be ready, as well.”
