MPSF tiebreaking procedure

What I had posted last night was based on something I had been told prior to Saturday’s match. It was not completely true.
UH only holds the tiebreaker over UCLA of the teams that could be in the mix (and BYU of course, but that won’t come into play), neither would Pepperdine, even if UH wins both).
the best Hawaii could finish is 15-9. USC is done playing for the regular season at 14-10.
outside of BYU 18-4 and Pepperdine 16-6, the next 6 teams have the potential also to finish 14-10 as they have two matches remaining. UCSB & UCI at 14-8, LBS, UH and UCLA at 13-9
of the teams at 13-9/14-10: UCLA holds the tiebreaker over USC on set differential. SC holds the tiebreaker on UH head-to-head.
Long Beach holds the tiebreak on UCLA in set differential, over Hawaii head to head, over SC set differential.
Someone also asked if a coin toss had ever been used. I believe it was 1990, don’t remember who UH was tied with but coin toss done over the phone. UH lost it. really good team, went 12-4 in the WIVA as it was called. if you remember, the league has gone through many changes, from its name WCVC, CIVA, WIVA, MPSF. two divisions, to playoff format where at one point the top team got a first round bye.
Anyway, From MPSF regulations, courtesy mpsfvbfan:
505.1.3.10 Tiebreakers
Ties affecting the selection or seeding for the MPSF Championship Tournament shall be broken by applying the following procedures in the order presented:
The tie shall be considered broken as soon as one procedure produces a difference between or among the
tied teams.
If a multiple tie has been broken and two or more teams remain tied the tiebreaker will revert back to #A:
head-to-head record comparison, then down the tiebreaker procedure until the remaining tie is broken.
If two or more teams remain tied, the process shall begin again with head-to-head and on down the list until
all ties are broken. (5/01).
A. Head-to-head record in MPSF match play between tied teams.
B. Highest percentage of MPSF sets won in the matches played between tied teams.
C. Points scored divided by points allowed in MPSF matches between tied teams.
D. Percentage of sets won in all MPSF matches.
E. Total points scored in all MPSF matches divided by total points allowed in all MPSF matches.
F. Coin toss.
Hypothetically, if LB, UH, UCLA, and USC all end up in a four-way tie, their ranking would be as follows (based on #A above)
6th place: USC 5-1 record (swept LB & UH, split with UCLA)
7th place: UH 3-3 record (swept UCLA, split with LB, and was swept by USC)
8th place: LB 2-4 record (split with UH & UCLA, was swept by USC)
9th place: UCLA 2-4 record (split with USC & LB, was swept by UH)
LB holds the head to head tiebreaker over UCLA having beaten UCLA 3-1, but losing last night 3-2, which would give them the 8th spot.
Interesting week ahead…
last night’s match was great to witness… hawaii was really clicking, maybe motivated by senior night.
so many scenarios for the mpsf tournament …. just gonna sit back and watch it all play out. here’s hoping hawaii ends up on the right side of any tie-breakers that are called into play. (or they take 2 from pepperdine next week, so that tie-breakers are not necessary.)
i was hoping hawaii would be competing well enough, and consistently enough this season to be secured of a playoff spot by this point in the season, rather than crunching the numbers on the possible scenarios.
but they seem to be peaking at the right time still though, they’ve shown they play better against the top mpsf teams at home rather than on the road (so despite their better play in recent weeks, it still puts next week’s matches on the road at pepperdine in doubt). perhaps they can catch a slightly-less-motivated pepperdine team that’s already qualified for the mpsf tournament.
1 agree it will be interesting.
If LB had beaten UCLA Saturday it would have made things less complicated.
This is not the first time it has come down to the last week. UH has had to sit back and hope for things to happen on the mainland in their favor to get in or for a better seed in a number of previous years.
I do think it is the first time that it is so jumbled liked this heading into the final week.
On a side note, I think that someone from UH should be this week’s national POW…Two wins over BYU, incl. six straight sets is pretty darned good by any standard…
Not sure who uh will nominate, siki was great saturday but so so friday and brook was good friday but so so saturday.
Maybe Averill or Ramos…
I would like to see either West or Ramos, with a preference for Ramos.
Siki wouldn’t be a bad choice…..his play on Friday and Saturday dictated how the Warriors played. When he was able to get out of his funk on Friday…..
Yep Siki’s numbers are pretty good when they are combined, but maybe not national POW good.
In this week’s AVCA poll: UH up to #9, UCLA down to #10. BYU fell to #3. A couple other teams switched here and there, but no dramatic movement.

7. I would think UH would have the MPSF POW, Ramos a good choice. Zarkovic had kills but not great hitting percentage, was negative until late but he did have big kills at the end. west very consistent when he got the ball: 10-1-16 Friday, 9-1-15 Saturday, 7 BA total.

If UH wins or splits, Pepperdine and they have a tie of 2 or more for the 8th spot, which would be UCLA and UH, BYU will still win over UH, due to head to head matches over Stanford, UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSB, LBSU, USC. Pepperdine #2 would decide UH’s faith in the MPSF seeds. Pepperdine would have head to head matches over USC, BYU, of which would be enough to oust UH, even if UH did have a split with Pepperdine. If they were going into a tie at 8th place MPSF. Is this correct? Head to head matches

on 4. already said, but the national tuck is set at 13. from the looks of it from UH and MPSF. Think about it.
