Today is the last day of UH’s Summer Session I.
Many of the Mainland-raised players will be heading home for a three-week break before returning for the start of training camp.

The view:
“We like to go to a place near Kobe’s old house. It’s a secret hideout. We call it Top of the World. It’s about a five-minute drive from Palisades High School, my old high school. It’s a view we go to. We hang out there, talk story, and catch up, let everybody know what’s been going on here. It’s a great view. We can see downtown L.A., the ocean, everything. It’s peaceful. It’s very quiet.”
The workout:
“I like to go to the Sand Dunes. That’s in Manhattan Beach. It’s like a 150-yard steep hill of sand. A lot of the pro and college athletes like to go there and train. Last year, I saw Troy Polamalu train there. It’s a very popular training spot. If you walk up it one time, you’re already sore. I know some people who walk up it 10 times. That’s a crucial workout. I sprint, maybe, halfway. You get a good warmup that way. I walk up it about three times. I’m going to meet up with (teammate) Joe Avery. We’re going to train over there.”
The grinds:
“It’s in West L.A. It’s a place that makes waffles and chicken. If were to bring any local person back home with me, I’d take them there. I order a No. 9. It’s a waffle and three chicken wings. The waffle is from a secret recipe. It’s a special taste you can’t get anywhere else. I usually get one waffle. It’s filling. It’s a fat waffle. You pour the syrup on it, but you don’t need that much. I’ll go there after the Sand Dunes.”

They lost the game 0-20 and would be the FIRST shutout at Aloha Stadium since Nov 27, 1976 vs Oregon St.

I think ST made the point that we can’t drop mbb due to the NCAA requirements for x number of men/women/total sports. We need to get behind the team & Coach Nash & help raise the expectation level of their play. Like the little train that could, “I think I can, I think I can…” It’s uphill, but with attendance & support of the team, they start believing in themselves. Lots of practice, developing outside shooting, unselfish play. I watched NAU’s mbb team under Ben Howland improve over a few years to get to the Big Dance. NAU did it with 3-point shooting. I think UH’s mbb can improve.

I agree, there is something screwed up here. No appetite, very tired and drowsy at Tsukiji’s. Twelve hours later, I can’t sleep. I’m busy updating the prayer requests for my church Web site. don’t know if she is playing with jiyai shin (5 times winner this year), but if she is, she is playing even with her. both 4 under after 12.

Tuesday night’s fundraiser for the FALLS OF CLYDE was a great success both in terms of raising some $$$$ and making new friends to support our efforts to bring the ship back to its former glory.

The Friends of Falls of Clyde will be holding a potluck bbq and fireworks viewing on Friday, July 3m next to the ship. People will start to gather around 5 pm to decorate the ship to celebrate the Fourth of July and then we;ll eat around 6:30 or so. The fireworks show sponsored by the Aloha Tower Marketplace will light up shortly after 8:30 pm.
Free parking is available for people attending the bbq.
NOTE: This is a family-oriented function although people are welcome to bring beer or wine and drink discreetly

I’m sure that Pisa’s agent studied which teams have cap room, since Pisa signed just a 1-year contract at a big discount from his previous contract. It turns out that one of the teams with a lot of cap room is Chicago…now that he’s earned the starting spot and Chicago has a lot of cap room, he could be in line for a big contract extension sometime during the season.

ESPN has an article about the All Poly Camp, going over many of the recruits there.
Washington State’s season ticket sale totals are quite low and their ticket sales for the UH game in Seattle are very low. UH fans may not be outnumbered much at the Washington State game–especially considering that UH fans who bought tickets through Washington State (like some already have) are counted in Washington State’s ticket total.

Miano was finalizing plans for next week’s dinner.
And Dave Aranda was watching videos. That guy is always watching videos or drawing up plays. He’s going to either be a head coach or a guy who’ll need Lasik’s.

He’s super cut.
Even Blaze and Spencer Smith make comments about how fit Libre is.
It looks bleak for Libre to play this season, but you never know.

I guess Andrew Manley’s not too keen on being a Warrior. According to one article, he’s been up and down the coast participating in football camps to show off his skills, but the only offer he’s received thus far is from UH. He states he will continue to try to put his name out there so he can get more offers. Do we really want someone who will choose UH by default? No thanks. We’ll take the ones who has the heart of a “true” Warrior.

mack, to his credit is a man of his word. he has stated on numerous occasions that he will not pull back an offer.
the timing is not good to pull an offer regardless of what he said before. we don’t want to send the wrong signal to the local boys.
the flood gates are wide open now. in this day and age the “snooze you lose” theory doth apply. it works both ways. every school is offering early and expecting early commits. once that has begun there is no turning back otherwise your program will be left behind.
the door swings both ways, if you don’t commit early you could be left behind with no scholie. only the legit 5 star players can afford to wait till the very end.
mack has claimed he wanted to recruit only one qb this year. manley was given that opportunity last year and he never committed. so, do you blame mack for offering and accepting a verbal from one (kevin spain) who has so much potential. so ball was in manley’s court, it still is, but now he is worried that he is not the only one with the marbles. it will be like that no matter where you go. the competition is tremendous every where, welcome to the real world.

Just wondering about why the lack of media coverage for the Game Plan Academy camp that wrapped up today at BYU-HI campus.
#2 son was out there for the first night helping out and said it was a very good camp but that there was talk about how the numbers were low because of the conflicting schedule with the All-Poly Camp.
That’s unfortunate…local players may have been short-changed a little with both programs going on simultaneously.
I met AM a few times. Seems like a good kid.
I think he wants to do his due diligence. If you’re a top quarterback, you want to explore all of your options.
Thing is, UH really only has one opening at quarterback for the 2010 year. (There’s a chart of all of the recruiting plans for the next four years.)
So Mack told four QBs that he needed an answer now. First one to accept gets the scholarship. I suppose Mack could have waited, but you don’t want to go down to the wire.
I imagine, though, down the road, if AM is still available, UH will find a way to make an offer.
… On the other hand, if you make an ultimatum and don’t live up to it, good luck on trying that the next time.

AK shoots a course record and leads Tiger by two, Jim Brown goes on record and slings an insult at Woods or two, but the news that has everybody reeling is that he is back, that is, two birdies on the first two.
Yep, TW can steal the spotlight in a flash and smoother a controversy with a simple smile or pooh…..when all clynders are pumping, so are his woods, irons and the flat metal that never bends.
Today, Woods rolled 7 birds and one bogey and sank 146′ in putts– 27 putts total, hit 12/14 fws,15/18 greens w an average proximity of 22′ to hole.
Moreover, Tiger is 12/16 in victories when he birdies the first 2 holes in the first round.
After he went 5 under in the the back nine a little voice said,
“this tournament is over” except for the fat lady singing.
You got to feel for AK, the defending champ, who has played w injury and went bogeyless and made eight-birds.
But in the world of Tiger, the clock ticks on the beat of his stick.

June Jones tweets that he made a connect while in Kona with Carl’s Jr fastfood chain to hire his fb players for jobs. Seems like the company is planning to open about 50 outlets in Dallas. Question is, are our coaches making any effort to get our guys jobs, especially the walkons to help with tuition, etc. seems like our guys were working wherever they could land a job on their own

I agree with others that UH shouldn’t take players that don’t want to be here, but no one could’ve predicted with 100% accuracy that Manley wasn’t interested. I also think Manley is indeed afraid of the competition, but I don’t want to malign the kid without knowing that for sure. Suffice it to say that I’m more jacked about Corey Medeiros than Manley or Spain if only for his enthusiasm about being a Warrior & his lack of fear about competing–that reminds me of Colt.
Maybe if you yell at someone, “Give me that camera!” and then snatch it, it’s robbery?

he was never a head coach but he was rated one of the top assistant coaches available when he was at Georgia Tech. So we gave him an opportunity, it didn’t work out, let’s move on…yes, he is a nice guy, but the program is in the red again..let’s move on again…
I think whether UH made the playoffs or not this year, it still would have ended up with the same deficit. There’s no profit in going to the NCAAs.

true but if UH was in the hunt for the NCAA berth we would have had more people coming out to the games and therefore revenue would be up, what you say….we were just happy we qualified for the WAC, especially those of us who purchased WAC tournament tickets who were wondering if we’d be the host without our team in it, and to be ousted so easily is frustrating to say the least.
revenue was up this year in baseball, why, young arms that did very well against excellent non conference competition, top 10 rpi, and our hitters came through in the clutch to win games..winning against good competition will bring out the fans, start losing in a weak WAC then there is a drop off in attendance…
The desire to improve the status quo can be a good thing. Sometime you have something that is okay, you make a decision to change, and it gets better. That’s swinging for the fences and hitting a home run. And sometimes, Herman Frazier decides he can find someone better than Vince Goo, and he gets Jim Bolla. That’s striking out in all of your at-bats.
My point is this: It’s easy to want something better. It’s not so easy to make it happen. Dwelling only on what is wrong will always make things look bleak; lok at the big picture, study both the positives and the negatives of the situation. And in the end, recognize that any decision you make, whether to retain or release, go small-name or big-name — it’s all a gamble. But you need to make an educated gamble.
Maybe the 1-year extension was a way to encourage Coach Trap to look for another job? That way UH avoids a buyout and avoids having to fire a coach who increased revenue this year. That was the not-too-subliminal message I thought the 1-year extension sent.
If Coach Trap stays at UH and has a great season (which is possible with the pitching that returns), then he’ll have earned a nice extension. However, he could earn better offers with a huge season. If baseball struggles this season, then JD will be glad he only gave a 1 year extension.
eight years is not a gamble, it is a track record to make a judgment…but its JD’s call, Trap is now part of his legacy, along with his roll over of Nash’s contract and the hiring of CW and Dana…bottom line, UH loss 2.58 million, he wants a balanced budget or at least minimize the losses. His coaches got to win to help generate interest and revenue and not all sports have venue to generate revenue..
One thing I’ve thought about for a day (ever since Al posted that rivals link yesterday) but waited to post about Manley–he’s had an offer from UH for about a year and he’s trying to convince Idaho to offer him a scholarship? Is there any more proof needed that he really doesn’t want to go to UH?
Part of this could be that he wants to go to college on the mainland–lots of athletes want to do that, they are entitled to feel that way. We shouldn’t slam anyone’s character if they want to experience life on the mainland…it may be the right choice for some, while others may regret leaving Hawaii.
One thing to consider is that Manley *DOES* have a valid concern about the depth chart. I remember posting something about that last year when UH took 3 QBs, and now that UH has 1 committed QB for 2010 it is clear that there isn’t going to be enough playing time to go around. The 2009 recruits have the advantage of an extra year in the system and with 3 of them at UH we have to expect at least one will blossom in the system.
It isn’t an athlete’s responsibility to sacrifice his career for the fans of a team or for a state. An athlete has to look out for the best fit also.
As fans we cannot have it both ways–when UH is weak on the depth chart at a position (due to all the seniors the past few years), we’re happy when recruits choose to go to UH for a shot at early playing time. So, when a recruit looks at a depth chart and sees too much depth (anyone want to place a bet that all the 2008 and 2009 QB recruits will remain QBs at UH for their entire career?), we cannot say that isn’t a valid consideration.
I know that this blog looks at everything from an extremely UH-centric view, but even then I don’t see how it is fair to criticize an athlete’s character for taking the depth chart into consideration when picking a school.
that’s a good point in brought up Garret, without knowing the contract clause on buyout, termination, etc. his contract expired this year so the roll over only allows him next season to coach and then they got to seat down and negotiate if they want to continue, or UH can cut ties without a buyout penalty…
As Mac, Tony Tuioti, and others ramp up UH’s recruiting, this problem will get worse…especially when a position has an extremely high number of recruits in a year. To put things in perspective, it is extremely hard to name any schools that have taken 3 freshmen QBs in a recruiting class. When you add in Spain, UH is unusually loaded with young players at that position.
When Vince Young was at Texas, they had two recruiting classes where NO top QBs wanted to go to Texas. Even the 5-star, can’t-miss QBs refused to go to Texas because they wanted to play right away. Does that make them afraid of competition or does that make them smart for looking out for their future? Many of them went to star in SEC, Big 12, and Big 10 schools and some are playing in the NFL right now…would they have been better served by sitting on the bench for a couple of years to support the flagship school of their home state?

If Coach Trap’s contract expires after the coming season, there would be no buyout penalty. If he was given a 3-year extension and UH wanted to fire him after 1 season, that would be expensive.
If next season goes well, they can talk about an extension before the end of the season (before any other school could approach him). If the team struggles, they can quietly begin a search before the season ends.
If it is looked upon as strictly a bottom-line business decision, the 1-year extension makes sense.

When Vince Young left Texas after his Junior season, Texas had one redshirt freshman and one true freshman compete for the starting spot. Colt McCoy won the battle and instead of being a backup Jevon Snead transferred out.
Does that make Snead selfish, especially when Texas had no quality backup for their bowl game? Of course every player has to look out for himself! Snead is now starting and doing very well for an SEC team and he’ll get a shot at the NFL. If he stayed at Texas he wouldn’t have seen the field and would have had zero chance at the NFL.

Given the cutbacks for UC funding and the setbacks in the Davis economy, I do not think that UC-Davis will be able to get to D-IA football for at least 10 years. The UC funding isn’t going to get back to earlier levels for many years and the deep pockets in Davis aren’t as deep as 2 years ago.

JD the AD allowed Trap’s contract to dwindle to a final season, in 2009. Basically, Trap was told what he needed to do to get an extension. He met most of the goals, but not all, the biggest being qualifying for the NCAAs. So 2009 was Trap’s probation year.
But because of the problems with the women’s basketball search, it was decided to just give Trap, esentially, another probation year. I don’t think that’s right. Either he’s your guy or he’s not your guy. If he is, give him and the program security. If not, move on. But a one-year deal creates more headaches.

liz bursitis in the shoulder is common from lack of activity, we all lose strength and muscle mass as we age and our joints start to hurt. spend less time traveling and more time doing yard work to strengthen your upper body.. lifting udon with your chopstick and spooning nabeyaki isn’t enough, need more intense sweating…
The biggest reason why we should try not to attack recruits who choose a mainland school…some of them eventually decide to transfer to UH later on (David Veikune, etc.). I’d hate for a player to feel rejected by the local fans and cross UH off the list if he looks around for somewhere to transfer later.

cars are pushed to the shoulder of the the H3 Tunnel… There was plenty room for cars to U-Turn inside the tunnel. Right before 6pm the traffic started moving… Weirdly there was only the overturned SUV and a cop left… Just minutes earlier there was 2 firetrucks, 2 or 3 ambulances, and maybe 5-6 cop cars…. I don’t know how the heck an SUV overturned in the H3 during rush hour and no other car was involved… AMAZING….
Also about the same time at the bottom of the H3 (Honolulu bound) was a motorcycle accident, slowing down cars exiting the H3… What a mess.
Missed the H-3 accident, but had gone that way about 415 pm. Had noticed at that time there was a down pour of rain. If anyone travels this road note the slow moving vehicles, like the regular cement truck, or some heavy duty Marine vehicle, in the far right lane going about 30 mph (or sometimes less)..and then envision cars behind the slow moving vehicles merging into the fast lane. Not to say that this could have happened in the tunnel. But it’s possible, where the person in the SUV swerved and overturned to avoid hitting the car that crossed into the SUV lane, where the car crossing into the SUV lane could have been behind a slow moving vehicle. Does what I say make sense, too? I do know that cars, in general, drive faster than the posted speed limit on the H-3..a good majority do, and especially through the tunnel.
About Hawaii kids going away to play football at a mainland school, I think, allows them their freedom. This is a given. But it also allows them to escape being under the microscope, where they are continuously being judged (if they opted for UH) by their relatives, peers and even the media. For the Hawaii athletes opting for a mainland school filtering out this scrutiny relieves them of a little pressure. I think current UH athletes from Hawaii would tell you there’s a huge weight on their shoulders to do well here.
