A couple of minutes with … Ryan Henry

ryan-henry

Today is the last day of UH’s Summer Session I.
Many of the Mainland-raised players will be heading home for a three-week break before returning for the start of training camp.
Slotback Ryan Henry is going to SoCal. But if you’re in the neighborhood, look him up and he’ll show you:
The view:
“We like to go to a place near Kobe’s old house. It’s a secret hideout. We call it Top of the World. It’s about a five-minute drive from Palisades High School, my old high school. It’s a view we go to. We hang out there, talk story, and catch up, let everybody know what’s been going on here. It’s a great view. We can see downtown L.A., the ocean, everything. It’s peaceful. It’s very quiet.”
The workout:
“I like to go to the Sand Dunes. That’s in Manhattan Beach. It’s like a 150-yard steep hill of sand. A lot of the pro and college athletes like to go there and train. Last year, I saw Troy Polamalu train there. It’s a very popular training spot. If you walk up it one time, you’re already sore. I know some people who walk up it 10 times. That’s a crucial workout. I sprint, maybe, halfway. You get a good warmup that way. I walk up it about three times. I’m going to meet up with (teammate) Joe Avery. We’re going to train over there.”
The grinds:
“It’s in West L.A. It’s a place that makes waffles and chicken. If were to bring any local person back home with me, I’d take them there. I order a No. 9. It’s a waffle and three chicken wings. The waffle is from a secret recipe. It’s a special taste you can’t get anywhere else. I usually get one waffle. It’s filling. It’s a fat waffle. You pour the syrup on it, but you don’t need that much. I’ll go there after the Sand Dunes.”

John Estes was finalizing his travel plans. He leaves today to spend about a week with his family.

Not-so-good-day: I ran into the scariest Warrior ever — B.J. Fruean. He’s apparently taking classes at UH again.

  3. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:09 am

Ahhh Mei Ling you beat me, or else I would have been “FIRST”

  4. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:12 am

BTW, Keith AhSoon is now living in Northern Cal and keep in touch with the Estes Ohana up there in Stockton

  5. Jason July 2, 2009 12:16 am

Waffles and chicken sound good right now.

I shouldn’t have drank that green tea, I can’t sleep.

  6. MeiLing July 2, 2009 12:16 am

    BigWave,

It’s all of that typing that takes time. But you’re in the top 10!

  7. Jason July 2, 2009 12:17 am

That reminds me, I need to change the Web site my name links to. I finally got my own domain, so people who link to my site should probably change their bookmarks.

  8. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:19 am

    Wow. Jason.
You can’t sleep at night, but you’re tired during the day.
    Go back to school.

  9. will-i-am July 2, 2009 12:19 am

    Waffles and chicken! hmm.

I still can’t believe that the stadium is using green primer then gonna color it over with the brown and yellow again. I am starting to think that the people at the stadium don’t like U.H. football.

brown and yellow stadium color scheme and swap meet on game day?

  10. Committed Road Warrior July 2, 2009 12:20 am

    Top 10?

Jason stay up this late. What you up to?

  11. will-i-am July 2, 2009 12:20 am

Stephen, how many hours of sleep do you get a night?

  12. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:20 am

NCAA rules prohibit athletes from saying the name Roscoe’s

  13. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:21 am

BTW2, I just watched the Sep 26, 1998 Game vs Arkansas State.

They lost the game 0-20 and would be the FIRST shutout at Aloha Stadium since Nov 27, 1976 vs Oregon St.

Ironically the next week they got shut out again 0-28 vs SMU.

Since then then haven’t been shut out at home

  14. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:22 am

    will.i.am:
    About five.

  15. will-i-am July 2, 2009 12:23 am

I also think the stadium should charge people more if they park inside with only one person in the car.

They should do the opposite of swap meet 25 cents per person.
It should be $25 for one person, $15 for two people and $5 for 4 or more people in a car. That solves the parking problem.

  16. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:23 am

    will.i.am.
What’s up with those 1970s seats?

  17. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:24 am

Every notice on game day how many cars have those blue stickers?

  18. will-i-am July 2, 2009 12:25 am

Give the chairs 5 more years and they will be hip again. In green…

  19. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:27 am

Maybe UH and Aloha Stadium got the orders mixed up. UH is using a blue primer and green paint.

  20. will-i-am July 2, 2009 12:29 am

Imagine Boise with a brown and yellow stadium.

  21. MeiLing July 2, 2009 12:29 am

I just got through moving furniture around so I can fit a desk in here. I’m sitting on the floor in the hallway typing this. Am I nuts? Yeah, I’m a Tsai-ko.

I think ST made the point that we can’t drop mbb due to the NCAA requirements for x number of men/women/total sports. We need to get behind the team & Coach Nash & help raise the expectation level of their play. Like the little train that could, “I think I can, I think I can…” It’s uphill, but with attendance & support of the team, they start believing in themselves. Lots of practice, developing outside shooting, unselfish play. I watched NAU’s mbb team under Ben Howland improve over a few years to get to the Big Dance. NAU did it with 3-point shooting. I think UH’s mbb can improve.

Off the soapbox…going to bed. Although I agree with Jason, too much genmaicha.

  22. Jason July 2, 2009 12:29 am

I agree, there is something screwed up here. No appetite, very tired and drowsy at Tsukiji’s. Twelve hours later, I can’t sleep. I’m busy updating the prayer requests for my church Web site. And I have to wake up early to go to my sister’s house tomorrow. I might get less sleep than Stephen tonight. Things don’t make sense. 😛

  23. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:29 am

Why was Perez Hilton so mean to will.i.am last week?

  24. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:30 am

Only the roof will be Green….

  25. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:31 am

Don’t forget that Ben Howland was Jamie Dixon’s first mentor.

  26. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:32 am

I guess brown is suitable for Aloha Stadium because you can’t distinguish between the rust and the paint.

  27. will-i-am July 2, 2009 12:33 am

I didn’t know Perez Hilton was being mean to me. I guess I will have to lurk on this blog more often. I thought checking it three times a day was excessive.

  28. Jason July 2, 2009 12:33 am

Mei Ling: I’ll e-mail you those photos in a few minutes, once I’m done typing these prayer requests.

  29. MeiLing July 2, 2009 12:37 am

Thanks, Jason. I’m gonna go to bed soon. Will check pics tomorrow. HiFlyer’s gonna help me pick up the rest of this desk in the a.m. Then I need to work on beds & bookcases. Better than beds & broomsticks…k, time to get off this PC.

    Night!

  30. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:38 am

Jason are you sliding in some request for some 3-4 Star Recruits to commit?

  31. Ralph July 2, 2009 12:38 am

Jason I hope you don’t have swine flu! hopefully its the heat and humidity that’s draining you, drink a lot of water, hydrate youngin

  32. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:38 am

    MeiLing:
    You need a Mac.

  33. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:40 am

    Stephen,
    Coach is already Married

  34. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:42 am

Heard a bunch of the Fellas are going to be staying at the Estes pad this weekend…

  35. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:43 am

    Big Wave:
    LOL.

  36. Ralph July 2, 2009 12:44 am

isn’t the last qb we recruited from Palisades?

  37. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:44 am

I think Estes takes them fishing at a really gnarly spot.

  38. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:45 am

BTW3, I bet Austin’s wedding reception will have some killer Mexican Food… He’s still looking for a good Authentic Mexican place to eat near Manoa, which is reasonably priced. If you got suggestions, give big #61 a shout….

  39. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:46 am

    Paradise, no?

  40. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:47 am

John’s younger bro is said to be a pretty good golfer

  41. Ralph July 2, 2009 12:50 am

Jason you’re working on prayers and you’re feeling sick, find a prayer for yourself to self heal….the kalbi was just great, you missed out eating only sushi…maybe you’re spending too much time on the 49’er website, too depressing…no qb named after ota’s.

  42. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 12:54 am

    Jason:
If you’re going to stay up, you should watch Cold Case.

  43. Ralph July 2, 2009 12:59 am

Spain qb, paradise valley…well, at least it started with a P

  44. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 12:59 am

    Speaking of Jason, how’s GiGi?

  45. BigWave96744 July 2, 2009 1:01 am

Ralph, I think Pep Fonokalafi is from “P”alolo Valley

  46. Jason July 2, 2009 1:05 am

I mentioned myself in my prayer requests, of course. At least tomorrow (or today, I guess), if I’m tired, I can take a nap; kind of hard to do that at Tsukiji. Right now, I feel hungry, though. 😛

I’m going to go to sleep soon, but I’d probably tune into NCIS before Cold Case. I have the DVDs, I’m going through Season 3 now. 😀

  47. Ralph July 2, 2009 1:06 am

Big Wave my daughter is starting to surf, got a gash on her ankle from the fin of a longboard… a gal loss her longboard when her leash snapped, the board knocked her friend on his head and he let go of this board which hydroplaned across my daughter and her board cutting her.

  48. Ralph July 2, 2009 1:09 am

channel 555 plays all the reruns of NCIS, just dvr them. sleuth also plays a rerun about 12 midnight..

  49. Jason July 2, 2009 1:15 am

That’s how I got hooked on NCIS, watching the reruns on USA Network (I think 555 is USA). But I’m a DVD guy, so I got the box sets from Amazon. Now I’m watching them in order. BTW, I don’t have a DVR. 😛

I’m off to bed. Good night, Ralph. BigWave. Stephen.

oops, mistake. leader is -6, inbee park, but she still on course. in house, final score leaders are at -4. mw has a chance to shoot her best 18 this year. on another note, the tournament, j farr, may lose it’s sponsor next year and might not return. the lpga has been on the downhill for a while and with this commissioner, bivens, i don’t expect them to improve. their tournaments will get less and less. fire the commissioner??? maybe.

  68. Nalani July 2, 2009 7:06 am

Hi Tsaiko’s – I haven’t posted for a while, but have been lurking a little here and there. I can’t believe how busy I’ve been. It’s harder representing artists than being one at times.

A funny correction…on 6/30 blog pix “Linebacker Josh Rice works on his breathing technique before going through his routine” just thought I’d mention that that’s my son Kaha’i. He is enjoying his afternoon naps, I mean Yoga.

Also, a shout out to my wonderful husband. He and I celebrate our 20th Anniversary today. All my love to him.

And if you’re on the Laie side of the island, KS Varsity football plays Kahuku in a pass league game next Friday. My son Pono is playing Free Safety/Strong Safety. He’s doing well and enjoyed himself at the All Poly camp this week. He’s c/o 2012.

  69. whitey July 2, 2009 7:14 am

i think i need some parts, maybe i’ll go southward.

  109. al July 2, 2009 11:16 am

they said at least four new ones, not including the ones who already committed or were previously offered.

i hope we have room for all.

it seems that this year will be a bumper crop for local recruits. if i were a mainland recruit who was offered by hawaii i’d commit as soon as possible.

we have ten in the fold and several greyshirts as well. i believe that we may less than a dozen more scholies available.

as they say, what a difference a year makes.

  115. Garret July 2, 2009 12:29 pm

The Examiner went over the 49ers schedule and mentioned Pisa in their preview of the Chicago game.

When looking at the Bears defense, you notice that linebackers spot immediately. With a history of great linebackers like Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary (current 49ers head coach), you can see the same intensity in Brian Urlacher. Alongside Lance Briggs, the Bears have a very strong presence in run stoppage. And the addition of Pisa Tinoisamoa makes the Bears linebacker group very dangerous.

  116. Garret July 2, 2009 12:31 pm

I’m sure that Pisa’s agent studied which teams have cap room, since Pisa signed just a 1-year contract at a big discount from his previous contract. It turns out that one of the teams with a lot of cap room is Chicago…now that he’s earned the starting spot and Chicago has a lot of cap room, he could be in line for a big contract extension sometime during the season.

A check on Wednesday afternoon of the most recent figures indicates that the Bears remain $17.67 million under their adjusted salary-cap figure of $135.9 million. That means the organization has committed 86.99 percent of its cap to this point and there is plenty of room left over for spending.

  117. Garret July 2, 2009 12:32 pm

I agree with this comment on the article.

Pisa Tinoisamoa (Age 27)- If he becomes the starting SSLB and plays well, why wouldn’t we retain him beyond his 1 year deal? The Bears have an opportunity to field the best 4-3 LB core in the NFL this season, and if it works, why not hang on to it? With Urlacher in his 30’s, I think it would be much easier to focus on “eventually” replacing one LB, instead of 2. There is something to be said for the young talent behind them in Williams and Roach, but I have to imagine Pisa could earn himself an extension/long term deal if he fits the bill well.

ESPN has an article about the All Poly Camp, going over many of the recruits there.

You could hear the pads banging throughout the island of Oahu, Hawaii, as the All Poly Football Camp concluded with a full-contact scrimmage on Wednesday. The final day epitomized the competition and intensity that was preached throughout the camp. Players flew around the football field at Kapiolani Park with tons of energy and high effort, while incorporating the basic fundamentals that were taught by a staff of highly regarded Division I coaches.

Here are some of the highlight performances of the week and final scrimmage:

Washington State’s season ticket sale totals are quite low and their ticket sales for the UH game in Seattle are very low. UH fans may not be outnumbered much at the Washington State game–especially considering that UH fans who bought tickets through Washington State (like some already have) are counted in Washington State’s ticket total.

Dan Meyer, athletics ticket manager at WSU, said the Cougars have sold 11,000 football season tickets. That’s down about 1,700 from this point last year, when the Cougars wound up selling 13,232, fourth most in school history.

The Cougars have sold 12,300 tickets for their eighth annual “home” game at Seattle’s Qwest Field. Meyer said that’s one of the lowest totals at this time of year for the Qwest game.

WSU plays Hawaii at Qwest on Sept. 12.

Samoa News article about the Samoa Football Academy and Medical Mission…which for some reason the Samoa News calls the “JJ Football Academy”.

Scholarships totaling $10,000 and footballs to aid in the development of local football programs marked the closing of the two-day 2009 June Jones Football Academy, Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Ili’ili.

Awardees are: Leone High School 2009 Valedictorian Ulysses Hopkinson; Tafuna High School graduate Jin Min; Leone High School graduates Clint John Filoiali’i and Pat Lang and Fagaitua High School graduate Tauamanu Sega.

As four of the recipients are currently off-island, the only one present to personally accept his award was Ulysses, who finished at the top of his class from Leone this year with a 3.99 Grade-Point-Average (GPA).

Ulysses plans to major in engineering at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

University of Hawaii Head Coach Greg McMackin, UH Director of Player Personnel Tony Tuioti and UH Graduate Assistant Craig Stutzmann were among the coaches who traveled to American Samoa for the event.

Tuioti’s parents are from Tulaele and Aleipata, Samoa. He played at UH under both Jones and McMackin.

    Off-topic Alert

Yesterday at the cc some of us were wondering who it was that was attempting a Facebook friend request recently. We figured out that it must have been Pauoa Boy.

I notice that his last comment was posted at about 9:00 am on July 1 his local time.

I strongly suspect that he has been very “busy” since then.

Here is a link to some comments by Marine Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson to his marines before they headed off to begin the recent operation in Afghanistan
    http://tinyurl.com/nums7x

    Some excerpts of particular note:

We need to make sure we understand that the reason we’re here is not necessarily the enemy. The reason we’re here is the people. What won the war in al-Anbar province [Iraq] and what changed the war in al-Anbar was not that the enemy eventually got tired of fighting. It’s that the people chose a side, and they chose us. We offer the one thing the enemy can never offer, and that’s a future; that’s hope. The people are looking to you.

Bottom line, fellas, it’s hot. It’s gonna get hotter. Your packs are heavy. They’re gonna get heavier. Our resupply to you is going to be tough. We’re focused on getting you water. We’re focused on getting you ammo. Chow will come later. Anything else will come later. We’ll get you all the water and ammo you can use, but a lot of it may be by air drop, because the roads to get to you may not be open. And like I said, there is no cavalry. There is no reserve. You’re gonna fight. And you’re gonna stay there, and you’re gonna fight until you win.

Bottom line, fellas, is that this is the moment. This is the moment you’ve trained for. This is the moment you came into the Marine Corps for. This is the moment that all of us have been waiting for for a hell of a long time.

Godspeed Pauoa Boy. Come home safe. Go Warrior!

I guess Andrew Manley’s not too keen on being a Warrior. According to one article, he’s been up and down the coast participating in football camps to show off his skills, but the only offer he’s received thus far is from UH. He states he will continue to try to put his name out there so he can get more offers. Do we really want someone who will choose UH by default? No thanks. We’ll take the ones who has the heart of a “true” Warrior.

    Hoohiki and ai-eee-soos:

re: Manley – I had the same feeling, Hoohiki, as I read the article and silently said, “Coach Mack should pull the offer and award it to someone who REALLY wants to be a Warrior” – from what I have read, Manley is a very good QB, but ……………. we do not need his attitude on the team.

  142. Bulla July 2, 2009 2:51 pm

    A-House,

I agree, the kid is trying to shop a deal. there are reasons why NO ONE ELSE has offered him, so i don’t know what he thinks. he’s reading his hype, and beginning to buy it also.

look at the QB Roper leaving Oregon to go to Montana, Div IA to Div IAA; The Beast is going to personally introduce himself on October 31st with a ka-toosh. Weber State travels to the lovely town of Missoula for an epic rematch.

    GO WARRIORS

From what I have read, looks like Weber St is really taking BIG steps to upgrade their football team and make their presence felt in their league with all the Hawaii transplants. Can they go “perfect”?

Looking for Ryan to have an impact year with many big plays this year!!

Looks like we will miss you guys at most of our tailgates, but that’s ok.

  144. al July 2, 2009 3:15 pm

mack, to his credit is a man of his word. he has stated on numerous occasions that he will not pull back an offer.

the timing is not good to pull an offer regardless of what he said before. we don’t want to send the wrong signal to the local boys.

the flood gates are wide open now. in this day and age the “snooze you lose” theory doth apply. it works both ways. every school is offering early and expecting early commits. once that has begun there is no turning back otherwise your program will be left behind.

the door swings both ways, if you don’t commit early you could be left behind with no scholie. only the legit 5 star players can afford to wait till the very end.

mack has claimed he wanted to recruit only one qb this year. manley was given that opportunity last year and he never committed. so, do you blame mack for offering and accepting a verbal from one (kevin spain) who has so much potential. so ball was in manley’s court, it still is, but now he is worried that he is not the only one with the marbles. it will be like that no matter where you go. the competition is tremendous every where, welcome to the real world.

time to man up. do want to be a hometown hero or not?

Just wondering about why the lack of media coverage for the Game Plan Academy camp that wrapped up today at BYU-HI campus.
#2 son was out there for the first night helping out and said it was a very good camp but that there was talk about how the numbers were low because of the conflicting schedule with the All-Poly Camp.
That’s unfortunate…local players may have been short-changed a little with both programs going on simultaneously.

  147. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 3:38 pm

I met AM a few times. Seems like a good kid.
I think he wants to do his due diligence. If you’re a top quarterback, you want to explore all of your options.
Thing is, UH really only has one opening at quarterback for the 2010 year. (There’s a chart of all of the recruiting plans for the next four years.)
So Mack told four QBs that he needed an answer now. First one to accept gets the scholarship. I suppose Mack could have waited, but you don’t want to go down to the wire.
I imagine, though, down the road, if AM is still available, UH will find a way to make an offer.

  148. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 3:40 pm

… On the other hand, if you make an ultimatum and don’t live up to it, good luck on trying that the next time.

AK shoots a course record and leads Tiger by two, Jim Brown goes on record and slings an insult at Woods or two, but the news that has everybody reeling is that he is back, that is, two birdies on the first two.
Yep, TW can steal the spotlight in a flash and smoother a controversy with a simple smile or pooh…..when all clynders are pumping, so are his woods, irons and the flat metal that never bends.
Today, Woods rolled 7 birds and one bogey and sank 146′ in putts– 27 putts total, hit 12/14 fws,15/18 greens w an average proximity of 22′ to hole.
Moreover, Tiger is 12/16 in victories when he birdies the first 2 holes in the first round.

After he went 5 under in the the back nine a little voice said,
“this tournament is over” except for the fat lady singing.

You got to feel for AK, the defending champ, who has played w injury and went bogeyless and made eight-birds.
But in the world of Tiger, the clock ticks on the beat of his stick.

I sure hope that Weber State can upgrade their FB program to D-1.

The WAC will be needing another member, as BSU keeps looking
for greener pastures. Also, we have say aloha oe to LaTech.

I was hoping that Portland State and Sacramento State would upgrade, but they don’t seem to be in a hurry. The WAC will be hard pressed to find another member. That member has to come from the Big Sky, there are no other prospects.

I can’t blame Trapasso for looking around.
Like we said, a one-year extension — coming off the final year of his multi-year contract — just doesn’t say: Man, we love you.
JD the AD should have cut him loose or given him at least two years.

  175. Richie July 2, 2009 6:58 pm

You are right about Trap. We are not talking about a guy like Bob Nash who would probably never leave Hawaii. If after all of these years, the program is not where it should be, then JD should have just let him go.

  176. protector July 2, 2009 7:00 pm

I agree with others that UH shouldn’t take players that don’t want to be here, but no one could’ve predicted with 100% accuracy that Manley wasn’t interested. I also think Manley is indeed afraid of the competition, but I don’t want to malign the kid without knowing that for sure. Suffice it to say that I’m more jacked about Corey Medeiros than Manley or Spain if only for his enthusiasm about being a Warrior & his lack of fear about competing–that reminds me of Colt.

D1 sending an email endorsement to the UDub AD letting him know that Trap would be an excellent hire, seen him coach for 8 years…look no further than at UH, no buy out contract to worry about….

  186. Ralph July 2, 2009 7:28 pm

D1 all you need to do is go up to someone’s car and put your finger beyond the plane of the window and you’re breaking the law…you don’t have to grab the person in the car to be charged….where’s mr. c, colomaohana making him do too many chores, we need an hpd perspective

  187. Jason July 2, 2009 7:59 pm

Ralph: At the same time, I hope you are sending an e-mail to JD with your recommendations for Trap’s replacement, should he leave. It’s easy to say goodbye and good riddance to a coach, the challenge is in lining up someone better to replace him. Sometimes, you don’t realize how good you had things until that person is gone.

  188. Ralph July 2, 2009 8:04 pm

winning 53% of the games is not a good thing to have especially when it can be a revenue generating sport in a city that loves baseball.

  189. Ralph July 2, 2009 8:07 pm

he was never a head coach but he was rated one of the top assistant coaches available when he was at Georgia Tech. So we gave him an opportunity, it didn’t work out, let’s move on…yes, he is a nice guy, but the program is in the red again..let’s move on again…

  190. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 8:12 pm

I think whether UH made the playoffs or not this year, it still would have ended up with the same deficit. There’s no profit in going to the NCAAs.

  191. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2009 8:13 pm

    That’s for baseball, I meant.

  192. Ralph July 2, 2009 8:19 pm

true but if UH was in the hunt for the NCAA berth we would have had more people coming out to the games and therefore revenue would be up, what you say….we were just happy we qualified for the WAC, especially those of us who purchased WAC tournament tickets who were wondering if we’d be the host without our team in it, and to be ousted so easily is frustrating to say the least.

  193. Ralph July 2, 2009 8:25 pm

revenue was up this year in baseball, why, young arms that did very well against excellent non conference competition, top 10 rpi, and our hitters came through in the clutch to win games..winning against good competition will bring out the fans, start losing in a weak WAC then there is a drop off in attendance…

  194. Jason July 2, 2009 8:30 pm

The desire to improve the status quo can be a good thing. Sometime you have something that is okay, you make a decision to change, and it gets better. That’s swinging for the fences and hitting a home run. And sometimes, Herman Frazier decides he can find someone better than Vince Goo, and he gets Jim Bolla. That’s striking out in all of your at-bats.

My point is this: It’s easy to want something better. It’s not so easy to make it happen. Dwelling only on what is wrong will always make things look bleak; lok at the big picture, study both the positives and the negatives of the situation. And in the end, recognize that any decision you make, whether to retain or release, go small-name or big-name — it’s all a gamble. But you need to make an educated gamble.

  195. Garret July 2, 2009 8:32 pm

Maybe the 1-year extension was a way to encourage Coach Trap to look for another job? That way UH avoids a buyout and avoids having to fire a coach who increased revenue this year. That was the not-too-subliminal message I thought the 1-year extension sent.

If Coach Trap stays at UH and has a great season (which is possible with the pitching that returns), then he’ll have earned a nice extension. However, he could earn better offers with a huge season. If baseball struggles this season, then JD will be glad he only gave a 1 year extension.

  196. Ralph July 2, 2009 8:41 pm

eight years is not a gamble, it is a track record to make a judgment…but its JD’s call, Trap is now part of his legacy, along with his roll over of Nash’s contract and the hiring of CW and Dana…bottom line, UH loss 2.58 million, he wants a balanced budget or at least minimize the losses. His coaches got to win to help generate interest and revenue and not all sports have venue to generate revenue..

  197. Garret July 2, 2009 8:42 pm

One thing I’ve thought about for a day (ever since Al posted that rivals link yesterday) but waited to post about Manley–he’s had an offer from UH for about a year and he’s trying to convince Idaho to offer him a scholarship? Is there any more proof needed that he really doesn’t want to go to UH?

Part of this could be that he wants to go to college on the mainland–lots of athletes want to do that, they are entitled to feel that way. We shouldn’t slam anyone’s character if they want to experience life on the mainland…it may be the right choice for some, while others may regret leaving Hawaii.

One thing to consider is that Manley *DOES* have a valid concern about the depth chart. I remember posting something about that last year when UH took 3 QBs, and now that UH has 1 committed QB for 2010 it is clear that there isn’t going to be enough playing time to go around. The 2009 recruits have the advantage of an extra year in the system and with 3 of them at UH we have to expect at least one will blossom in the system.

  198. Garret July 2, 2009 8:46 pm

It isn’t an athlete’s responsibility to sacrifice his career for the fans of a team or for a state. An athlete has to look out for the best fit also.

As fans we cannot have it both ways–when UH is weak on the depth chart at a position (due to all the seniors the past few years), we’re happy when recruits choose to go to UH for a shot at early playing time. So, when a recruit looks at a depth chart and sees too much depth (anyone want to place a bet that all the 2008 and 2009 QB recruits will remain QBs at UH for their entire career?), we cannot say that isn’t a valid consideration.

I know that this blog looks at everything from an extremely UH-centric view, but even then I don’t see how it is fair to criticize an athlete’s character for taking the depth chart into consideration when picking a school.

  199. Ralph July 2, 2009 8:49 pm

that’s a good point in brought up Garret, without knowing the contract clause on buyout, termination, etc. his contract expired this year so the roll over only allows him next season to coach and then they got to seat down and negotiate if they want to continue, or UH can cut ties without a buyout penalty…

  200. Garret July 2, 2009 8:53 pm

As Mac, Tony Tuioti, and others ramp up UH’s recruiting, this problem will get worse…especially when a position has an extremely high number of recruits in a year. To put things in perspective, it is extremely hard to name any schools that have taken 3 freshmen QBs in a recruiting class. When you add in Spain, UH is unusually loaded with young players at that position.

When Vince Young was at Texas, they had two recruiting classes where NO top QBs wanted to go to Texas. Even the 5-star, can’t-miss QBs refused to go to Texas because they wanted to play right away. Does that make them afraid of competition or does that make them smart for looking out for their future? Many of them went to star in SEC, Big 12, and Big 10 schools and some are playing in the NFL right now…would they have been better served by sitting on the bench for a couple of years to support the flagship school of their home state?

  203. Garret July 2, 2009 8:58 pm

    Ralph,

If Coach Trap’s contract expires after the coming season, there would be no buyout penalty. If he was given a 3-year extension and UH wanted to fire him after 1 season, that would be expensive.

If next season goes well, they can talk about an extension before the end of the season (before any other school could approach him). If the team struggles, they can quietly begin a search before the season ends.

If it is looked upon as strictly a bottom-line business decision, the 1-year extension makes sense.

  204. MeiLing July 2, 2009 8:58 pm

    Jason,

#194 ~ You have a very mature thought process. Bravo!

  205. Garret July 2, 2009 9:01 pm

When Vince Young left Texas after his Junior season, Texas had one redshirt freshman and one true freshman compete for the starting spot. Colt McCoy won the battle and instead of being a backup Jevon Snead transferred out.

Does that make Snead selfish, especially when Texas had no quality backup for their bowl game? Of course every player has to look out for himself! Snead is now starting and doing very well for an SEC team and he’ll get a shot at the NFL. If he stayed at Texas he wouldn’t have seen the field and would have had zero chance at the NFL.

The LA Times has an article about the coaches trip to Iraq.

In Germany, Neuheisel is at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center talking to injured soldiers, meeting one who was badly wounded after an explosive hit his truck, killing everyone aboard but him. Outside the room, people are concerned that the excitement caused by the coaches’ presence might somehow dampen this soldier’s spirits.

“But when you got into the room, it was anything but,” Neuheisel says. “He was excited. He was aware of what happened, but he wanted back in the fight.”

    Nutt too was amazed.

“I’m thinking, ‘You’re leg’s blown up. You’re talking about going home?’ ” the Arkansas coach recalls.

“No, no, no,” the soldiers would say. “I’ve got to get back out there.”

  207. Garret July 2, 2009 9:17 pm

In Iraq, a flag football game is scheduled, Army versus Air Force, the coaches split on each team. At lunch, a soldier comes up to Nutt, begging him not to cancel the game because a dust storm is to arrive that afternoon.

“Whatever you do, Coach, don’t cancel the game.”

They don’t, but the dust storm comes, like an enormous dark cloud, shadowing the makeshift field — “We were shocked they were going to play,” Neuheisel remembers — but the troops pay it little mind, the Air Force eventually winning, 21-0.

“Those kids played their guts out, and it was just unbelievable,” Nutt says.

On the sideline, Neuheisel is standing next to Texas’ Brown, and a soldier comes up and says, “Oh, it’s coming tonight.”

    “What’s coming tonight?” Neuheisel asks.

“They’re going to throw a mortar in here tonight,” the soldier says, explaining that the enemy likes to fire mortars during a dust storm, when poor visibility is an advantage.

Brown and Neuheisel turn to each other and, only half-joking, Neuheisel says, “OK, this game should be just about over. . . .”

Nine-mile-high inflatable tower could cut the cost to launch spacecraft, reduce the need for GEO satellites, and improve cell phone signals. Tethered to a mountain 3.1 miles high, it would initially be 12.4 miles high–where the view is similar to an astronaut (black sky instead of blue), allowing a communications array to see 373 miles in all directions. Eventually they hope to get the towers to rise 124 miles high!

  223. Garret July 2, 2009 10:20 pm

I think that UH made a good hire with Chancellor Hinshaw.

Given the cutbacks for UC funding and the setbacks in the Davis economy, I do not think that UC-Davis will be able to get to D-IA football for at least 10 years. The UC funding isn’t going to get back to earlier levels for many years and the deep pockets in Davis aren’t as deep as 2 years ago.

    Re: Trap
JD the AD allowed Trap’s contract to dwindle to a final season, in 2009. Basically, Trap was told what he needed to do to get an extension. He met most of the goals, but not all, the biggest being qualifying for the NCAAs. So 2009 was Trap’s probation year.
But because of the problems with the women’s basketball search, it was decided to just give Trap, esentially, another probation year. I don’t think that’s right. Either he’s your guy or he’s not your guy. If he is, give him and the program security. If not, move on. But a one-year deal creates more headaches.

liz bursitis in the shoulder is common from lack of activity, we all lose strength and muscle mass as we age and our joints start to hurt. spend less time traveling and more time doing yard work to strengthen your upper body.. lifting udon with your chopstick and spooning nabeyaki isn’t enough, need more intense sweating…

  231. Garret July 2, 2009 10:32 pm

The biggest reason why we should try not to attack recruits who choose a mainland school…some of them eventually decide to transfer to UH later on (David Veikune, etc.). I’d hate for a player to feel rejected by the local fans and cross UH off the list if he looks around for somewhere to transfer later.

    Kekoa,
cars are pushed to the shoulder of the the H3 Tunnel… There was plenty room for cars to U-Turn inside the tunnel. Right before 6pm the traffic started moving… Weirdly there was only the overturned SUV and a cop left… Just minutes earlier there was 2 firetrucks, 2 or 3 ambulances, and maybe 5-6 cop cars…. I don’t know how the heck an SUV overturned in the H3 during rush hour and no other car was involved… AMAZING….

Also about the same time at the bottom of the H3 (Honolulu bound) was a motorcycle accident, slowing down cars exiting the H3… What a mess.

  238. roysan16 July 3, 2009 12:12 am

Missed the H-3 accident, but had gone that way about 415 pm. Had noticed at that time there was a down pour of rain. If anyone travels this road note the slow moving vehicles, like the regular cement truck, or some heavy duty Marine vehicle, in the far right lane going about 30 mph (or sometimes less)..and then envision cars behind the slow moving vehicles merging into the fast lane. Not to say that this could have happened in the tunnel. But it’s possible, where the person in the SUV swerved and overturned to avoid hitting the car that crossed into the SUV lane, where the car crossing into the SUV lane could have been behind a slow moving vehicle. Does what I say make sense, too? I do know that cars, in general, drive faster than the posted speed limit on the H-3..a good majority do, and especially through the tunnel.

  239. roysan16 July 3, 2009 12:24 am

About Hawaii kids going away to play football at a mainland school, I think, allows them their freedom. This is a given. But it also allows them to escape being under the microscope, where they are continuously being judged (if they opted for UH) by their relatives, peers and even the media. For the Hawaii athletes opting for a mainland school filtering out this scrutiny relieves them of a little pressure. I think current UH athletes from Hawaii would tell you there’s a huge weight on their shoulders to do well here.
