UH-BYU rewind NIght 2
It does make things very interesting in the standings.
Hawaii now in a there-way tie for sixth with Long Beach State and UCLA. USC is sitting in ninth and done for the regular season at 14-10. UCSB and UCI tied for fourth.
Warriors finish out with 2 at Pepperdine. UCLA hosts Cal Baptist and BYU. Scheduling quirk has Long Beach State at home Thursday against CSUN then at CSUN Saturday. Northridge is playing well at the moment, the 49ers have lost 3 straight and 5 of 6.
Way too many scenarios still in play to say who is at who and who other than BYU has the No. 1 seed and will host quarterfinal vs. No. 8.
Pepperdine at 16-6, Stanford at 15-7. Both are in but who where they will end up. Waves host the Warriors for 2 and the Cardinal, probably the hottest team in the MPSF at the moment, finishes at UC Irvine and UC San Diego.
Thougth Hawaii adjusted its rotation, got some good match ups, served well when they needed to.
Zarkovic is such a streaky player. BYU coach had said that the game plan, at least Friday, was to concentrate on Sedore. Don’t think he thought Hawaii could pass well enough to run the middle, which the Warriors did.
Zarkovic came on Friday to finish 12-7-29 after hitting negative most of the match. UH used him very effectively on the 3-meter attack. Siki finished 22-6-39, hit 410. West hit .533, Averill 667, Olsen 471. only Sedore under .300, at 240.
Cougars got 17 from Sander, 9 from Rivera, who had 12 Friday, 7 for Dobbert, who had 11 Friday.
UH finished hitting 419 to BYU’s 271. both teams had 9.5 blocks, UH with 4 in Set 3. Averill had 4 solo.

I am wondering what happens if USC, UCLA and UH all end up tied? like if UH splits at Pepperdine and UCLA beats Cal Baptist but loses to BYU.
I know UH gets in over UCLA, and USC gets in over UH,
but UCLA has the tiebreaker over USC.
of course UCLA and UH could both win out and that would mean USC is out. If UCLA wins out and UH splits, USC gets in over UH 🙁 hope that does not happen.
and Northridge has really been on a roll and could upset Long Beach twice, then USC, and UCLA and UH would all get in if both UCLA and UH win out and Long beach out.
Irvine is a guaranteed in because they have Pacific at home and that should be an easy win, but I think that’s there last match in their history so maybe some motivation.
My understanding is if there is a three-way tie, they then look at performance against the top team and so on down the standings.
for example, as you say, the three end up tied Hawaii the only one with that tiebreak with 2 wins over the Cougars. so they would be No. 7. Should UCLA beat BYU, they would own that tiebreak and be ahead of USC. USC and UCLA split during the season and if they were tied, I believe it goes to UCLA on set differential 4-3.
at least that is my understanding.

505.1.3.10 Tiebreakers
Ties affecting the selection or seeding for the MPSF Championship Tournament shall be broken by applying the following procedures in the order presented:
The tie shall be considered broken as soon as one procedure produces a difference between or among the
tied teams.
If a multiple tie has been broken and two or more teams remain tied the tiebreaker will revert back to #A:
head-to-head record comparison, then down the tiebreaker procedure until the remaining tie is broken.
If two or more teams remain tied, the process shall begin again with head-to-head and on down the list until
all ties are broken. (5/01).
A. Head-to-head record in MPSF match play between tied teams.
B. Highest percentage of MPSF sets won in the matches played between tied teams.
C. Points scored divided by points allowed in MPSF matches between tied teams.
D. Percentage of sets won in all MPSF matches.
E. Total points scored in all MPSF matches divided by total points allowed in all MPSF matches.
F. Coin toss.
Another great win. The warriors looked sharp tonight. Siki had his best match of the season.
Anyone know if the coin toss has ever been used? I understand why it’s ultimately needed but it would suck that after all the hard work all these players put into the season that their post season survival ended up being determined by the toss of a coin.
How come in today’s newspaper, the standings show a “y” next to Long Beach St. and USC ? A y means they have clinched a berth in the playoffs.

Yes, it did happen once that I know of, when it involved Hawaii back when it was the WIVA
it was 1990. UH 18-9, 12-4 WIVA. coin toss done over the phone. don’t remember who they were tied with. Alan Rosehill as the coach that year.

5. If 4 ? way tie, it seems UH would only win a tiebreaker with UCLA.
Too bad Etim-Thomas couldn’t get into the game last night. Was the last set too close for him to get in some ?
11. yes, that is the case. UH only has the tiebreak on UCLA … and BYU.
as for Etim-Thomas … sometimes it goes so quickly that there isn’t time to figure out the sub. Plus it may have looked well in hand but BYU still had the capability of coming back, especially if Sander went off from the service line.
re. 11. Im upset with Wade over that, Aniefre’s parents flew over and it was his last match here, He should have gotten in as a blocking sub at least instead of Hartley.
13. I agree…I forget how many points UH lead by when we had our first match point, but I felt Fre could’ve been subbed in for whichever MB was in the front row. If it was West, the crowd could have given him a standing O.
That reminds me of Glenny Adams several years ago, when she was at Chaminade. She had a local talent who started as a freshman and sophomore, then as a junior saw her time completely reduced to nothing as a senior. Many of this player’s family and friends came to her senior night and I was just shocked and appalled that Glenny did not get this senior in for even one point on her senior night. I definitely don’t remember the specifics of how the match went, but I do remember it was definitely possible to get her in which made everyone bewildered and upset. I lost all respect for her after that.
I definitely felt bad for Fre and his family. The Warriors definitely came out to play so much kudos to the guys and coaching staff. Charlie, however, dropped the ball when it came to honoring his player. I’m sure that one chance would have meant so much to him.
11. and 14. Yes, it may have been a little different as to the match’s importance, but in basketball, Coaches Beeman and Gib try to start their seniors in the last home games. Dave got all his seniors in this past season’s final home match.
But whenever the TV camera showed Aniefre during the season, he always had an upbeat, positive expression.
