Leilehua DE to join UH in 2010
Defensive end Charles Tuaau, who will be a senior at Leilehua High this year, said he has accepted a UH football scholarship.
Tuaau said he is 6 feet 3 and 275 pounds.
He said he is capable of bench pressing 365 pounds, and running 40 yards in 4.93 seconds.

The more I think about it, doesn’t the new “Road Warrior” ticket plan seem a little … um, uh, what’s the word … greedy?
First, I’ve been to every road game but one the past 16 years, and UH fans aren’t being placed in what would be described as premium locations.
It would seem the goal would be to place as many of a team’s fans in one area as possible. This doesn’t help. And, inevitably, UH won’t sell out the Road Warrior plans. What do they do with the unbought seats? Keep them empty? Doubt it.
Face it. Many of the fans attending road games live on the Mainland. And many are related to or are friends of the players.
The goal should be to get as many fans to road games as possible. A tax — and that’s what it feels like when premium areas are based on a priority system — might not be the best attraction.
Am I misinformed? What do you guys think?

I’m thinking that I’ll get the “Road Warrior” membership this year even though I won’t be needing the tickets to UNLV and might only need them for SJSU. The only problem is that I’d prefer donating that money to Na Koa instead. Plus, the $10 surcharge per ticket seems high to me. And I’m worried about how smoothly things will run in the first year.
Maybe I’ll wait to see how the program works for others this year and then get it the following year when there is no UNLV road game and UH travels to Fresno St and BSU.

I do think that the Road Warrior plan is a “fundraising attempt”, raising funds from Warrior fans who want to support the team on the road. As you point out, UH doesn’t get great road seats anyway and won’t sell out of their ticket allotments…I guess that makes it seem more greedy than I had first thought when I read about it this morning in the *print* Advertiser.
By the way, I really enjoy reading the print versions of newspapers, and I’ve really enjoyed reading the Advertiser each morning before turning on my computer. The one thing that surprised me when I got home was that Momo and Mrs. Momo stopped subscribing to Brand X…as far as I know they have always subscribed to both papers, but they stopped the other Honolulu paper because they said it wasn’t necessary.
The one thing I couldn’t figure out from Ferd’s story is whether the non-Panda travel agencies have to pay the Road Warrior fee for premium-area seats. If so, that increases the cost of the travel package, no? And doesn’t that give Panda, as UH’s in-house travel agent, a great advantage?

Players want to be noticed by as many schools as possible, especially if they want to go to a mainland school. I’m not surprised that they went to Maui for a camp because of all of the coaches there.

Panda already gets priority over the Road Warrior people, but if they get a $10 advantage per person for the road packages, they will really benefit from this policy.

One of the things that intrigues me every year is that UH pushes season ticket sales, as it should. But then as the season progresses, they start offering heavily discounted packages or promos, usually for the North end zone.
If I were a season-ticket holder, I would feel that wasn’t fair.
I think the Road Warrior package is fine, but UH has to really hold the line. Or else a person who bought the package will feel resentful sitting next to someone who didn’t.
The slowly emerging storyline beneath the 2010 recruiting class is the success of the warrior summer camps for skilled and bigman high school ballers.
Only, in its second year, it has produced a windfall of verbal commits, not only from local fields but from the continential plain also.

In this class alone we have three from Kailua HS and the local harvest continues to reap crop from Kaimuki to Pearl City to Wahiawa.
The MAC strategy is becoming increasing effective and its subtle message to invading poachers clear–this is our house and we wake up early before the sun breaks light on the makapu’u horizon.

To Coach Mack,
I see you’re filling your recruiting shopping cart quickly. And who I am I to say if you’re a savvy shopper or not. But keep in mind, though, that the purchases you make define you as a coach. Because you know, all too well, that the products that go into your cart today yields either successes or failures on the field in the future. And it trickles down to the successes and failures the team will have. This is a given, and probably you would concede as being correct. But what gets me, and please pardon this liberty as I want to get this off my chest, is that I’m unhappy with how this year’s recruiting is going. For all I’m hearing are things like: “these players are technically sound”, “they performed well in camp” and “they’re under the radar types” and “they have a lot of upsides”. In other words a lot obscurity. I don’t know if this will bold well, for only time will tell… If I were the coach looking at recruits I would look at the ones that aren’t the pretty boys at camps, but instead with all things being equal (size, speed, explosiveness), I’d sought out after the players that have the meanest streaks in them. I would look in the ghettos and housings for these types instead of relying on a recruit’s performance at a big man’s camp.

Seems to me UH isn’t organized in selling the road tickets. Its pretty sad when they are allotted tickets to the WSU and UNLV games that still haven’t been released for sale. Instead you have guys like Rich on the blog that has to drive to Vegas and buy the tickets for you hardcore fans in Hawaii. I’m still waiting to hear from my brother, who is a season ticket holder, for tickets to the WSU game. BTW, does anyone know what section UH has blocked for the WSU game?

Everytime I hear “Working Day and Night” takes me back to 7th grade, suntanning and listening to MJ’s Off the Wall album under the coconuts trees at Punalu’u beach on the Big Island with 3 senior girls at the time: Lynette Higashi, Zina Galapir and Dewani Lauro.

According to very reliable sources, as reliable as I can get….Whitley is TRYING to transfer to Weber State. If he is academically eligible he will be allowed to try out for the Wildcats, but that will be the determining factor, academic eligibility.
Weber State is still answering to sanctions from years past and is constantly improving it’s APR rating. The current staff is very adamant on working with full academic qualifiers, they have no ‘wiggle’ room like other programs. Best of luck to Whitley, and glad to hear that he has overcome his health issues that prevented him from coming home and playing for UH.

All I can say is that none of the published comments has come from UH coaches.
As for under-the-radar, I know that the coaches create their own list, with their own rankings. They’re going after the people they like the best.
Last year, a lot of the under-the-radar players suddenly became popular after verbaling to UH. That’s how rankings go. The more schools who proclaim to like you, the higher the ranking.

very good points, you have to remember, that at these camps it is only local kids vs. local kids….hmmmmm.
now, if it were at the Stanford Nike Camp, UCLA Adidas Elite Invitational, U.S. Army National Combine, or other venues of that nature, it would be more telling as far as skill level. I am not knocking any recruit whatsoever, however, if you’re talking apples to apples, you need to have more apples in your basket!
love the summer, time for Warriors to be and Warriors that be, to TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN……what you do in the off season will determine what you do in the season, nothing new, old school is the best school sometimes.

No offense to all of the national experts, but I think most people on this blog and other Hawai‘i sites know much more about football talent than the national guys. That’s just the way it is. Football is part of our culture. I mean, Phil Steele can crunch all the numbers he wants, but Pride, sjmacro, koakane, myki, Garret, wf2, roysan, etc., blow him away in terms of knowing Hawai‘i’s talent.

The only thing that worries me about UH recruiting right now is that it seems like the local players that UH offered first haven’t committed to UH. With UH rapidly filling out their recruiting class now, it appears that they have been moving on from their initial targets (Manley, Feheko, Hatchie, Rowley, etc.). They may keep recruiting them, but the numbers seem to indicate that the coaches don’t expect many or most of the early targets to commit.
I trust the UH coaches more than any recruiting service. So, the players they targeted first in recruiting (some of whom already had multiple Pac-10 offers before UH offered) would seem to be among the higher rated of the local recruits.

Regarding these early recruits, I think Mac and company with their combined 100+ years of coaching experience know what they are looking at and what they doing (strategically) when they make these early offers.
I think the Road Warrior program is kinda screwed up.
Most people in this category are not season ticket holders or people who sit in the non-PSC areas. I would assume most of them would go to only one road game this season, presumably UNLV. If you want priority over Travel Agents, you have to pay $50 and are limited to 4 tickets. That is $12.50 per ticket and that is on top of the $10 fee to UH. $22.50 EXTRA per ticket. It is a good theory but limiting them to only 4 tickets is rough. If they want 8 tickets, they will have to pay $100. It might be more worth it to just take your chances and save the money. The majority of the stadium is going to be UH fans anyway.

Yes, and it seems like the new rule prevents UH coaches from having camps on neighbor islands. This was the last year it would have been possible it seems.

As the only game in town… the PACIFIC… I hope Coach Mac and all the highschool coaches in Hawaii, Australia, Samoa are either protesting or requesting a waver.

We fans all have a budget. Why encourage fans to tap their limited budgets for airfares, hotels, meals, etc? Away games may leave fans cash-strapped, and may keep them from buying season tickets or keep them from putting more dollars here at home. Why should I spent $1,500 in related travel costs when I could catch the game on tv with some pupus, and donate $1,450 to UH?
I’d rather see the Athletic Department focus more on generating funds that will stay at home.

Feels good to be back in the office. 6 days in the islands and 6 rounds of golf. Finally caught up w/ my rest yesterday.
Many, many thanks to everyone who has generously donated extra $$ to cover my expenses of flying to Vegas and Oahu to distribute the UNLV tix. AND another big thanks to Mrs. A-House for keeping everything orderly at Genji’s.
$10 per ticket fee from UH is a bit stiff, but if you go to StubHub or Razorgator, the ticket prices are really jacked up. For example, SH has $35 tix in Section 108 going for $177 each, before fees. Sect. 108 is still reserved for Season Ticket Holders. I think a sideline season ticket at UNLV is $185. So, whoever has these tickets are getting their “investment” returned with one game, and 5 remaining home games to unload the rest and make a profit. Whatever…..

roysan16, i understand the basis of your lament and feel somewhat miffed too and have, like many, so much more expectation.
And while most on this website pledge endless loyalty and faith to coaching selection–it is the fan, that sets the standard of appreciation through attendance and no sugar coating can surmount mediocrity or losing seasons.
However, the process and road to V is much more complex than 5-star googles or ESPN top 150’s.
There is a lot more that goes into it.
For one, an upgraded training program is worth as much as a red-hot Urban Meyer. Ask Rich Rodriquez of Michigan.
Before he bought a house in A2 he secured his trainer and they both toured the weight facilities and asked for millions in renovations.
A simple training manual is not enuff.
That’s like having a constitution without a govt or military.
No way to effectuate or enforce its meaning.
Words without the ability to implement full scale is worthless.
It’s Plato’s Republic written in intergalactic brail.
You need diet formula and supervision, a certified training staff and constant monitoring.
Michigan and Ohio State have 6 fulltime trainers for football alone. Not including certified nutritionists.
While the NCAA places a limitation on coaches during the calendar year–trainers do not fall within this restriction and have daily access to athletes and have a dominating role in athlete development and discipline. They can make or break a college football player’s chances on the totem pole for playing time.
eh, what good is a 4-star recruit if he has to scale 12′ fence to work out?

Secondly, coaching can bring out the best in players–or contribute to a dismal subpar performance….as individuals or collectively as a unit or both.
Take a look at Boise State last year–no draftees, yet WAC champs!

Or are they managed efficienctly and taught well by solid coaching?

After one year, we have cause to expect better performance from Ron Lee n his staff.
Ditto on D with MAC n staff.
In the meantime, Im feeling more confidence with Mac’s system of recruiting than his actual recruits.
A good tree will ultimately bear good fruit.
I believe MAC has planted an excellent seed.
It will come and in the meanwhile, we shoud focus on the factory and its management that produces the winners….esp the guyz that hold the gate keys!

tsaimaster I am glad you posted your comments regarding seating, tickets, and fans going to away game. like many supporters, myself incIuded, we have called, posted or requested info about getting tickets. we have been put off or given at times second class citizen treatment. in times like these UH seems to not understand the fan base, their needs and how to treat them. UH will loose out. case in point rich bring in 200 tics for the UNLV game. we will be seated together enjoying the game, rooting for UH and most importantly have a guarentee that we will not worry about not getting tickets in a timely manner. I am sure you are aware of this and I must be preaching to the choir but I feel UH just doesn’t get it or our monies that should be supporting the warrior’s program is not wanted.

UH should have open air viewing of away games at the parks. Rent booths out to vendors, make it a carnival like atmosphere and sell “reserved seating” in front of an oversized projector screen. Somewhat like the ‘Sunset on the Beach’ venues.
Nakoa could also solicit donations and memberships at such venues.

I’m going to the San Jose game (and have seen UH play on the road before at San Jose, Alabama and the Sugar Bowl).
I agree with ST – unless it’s a BCS type game, this is a little too much.
I just clicked on to the San Jose site and individual tickets are not yet on sale. Two years ago I was able to get my ticket, next to the “Hawaii section” a lot quicker than I could through UH; also without going through all these hoops.
San Jose offers a discount for “group” sales, so this might be worth considering if there’s enough interest.
Also, SteveM mahalos for setting up the cruisers lunch – I learned a lot; and it was great to personally meet the rest of you (jm2375, Myki & sj-macro, Tom Mui, and Mei Ling).

The issues surrounding Aloha Stadium are not that complex. The Stadium is owned by the State of Hawai`i, not the University of Hawai`i – although a number of folks have been trying to transfer the ownership over the past several years. Specifically, the Stadium is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Accounting & General Services (DAGS). All revenues currently go into the General Fund
However, that is in the process of being discussed.
UH-M is a tenant just the same way that Swap Meet is. Both have representatives at the monthly Authority meetings and both make reports and take part in discussions pertinent to their interests.
Still, the decision under the existing laws to make changes lies solely in the hands of the Stadium Authority. Neither the Governor nor the Legislature can intervene directly except under very limited circumstances.
However, because of complaints lodged with a couple of key legislators about public participation, the Authority has made changes to how they conduct their business.
If there is any interest in finding out ways to be effective in making changes as to How Things Are Done out in Aiea/Pearl City, then please send me your contact information over the next couple of days. Once I get past the Tuesday night fundraiser for the Falls of Clyde – it’s pretty much all in my hands – I’ll give those of you who are interested some suggestions via e-mail. In addition to its first fund-raiser this Tuesday, the Friends of Falls of Clyde will be holding a potluck bbq and fireworks viewing on Friday, July 3 on land next to the ship. People will start to gather around 5 pm and eat starting around 6:30 or so. The fireworks show sponsored by the Aloha Tower Marketplace will start shortly after 8:30 pm.

P.S. I wasn’t a big MJ fan, but no question about his talent. Unfortunately, his personal side was all screwed up. All those plastic surgeries. I liked him being himself when he was young, like his other brothers. Sadly, for all that money he had, exclamation “had”, he was in debt over half a billion dollars. Hopefully, his royalties and his estate can payoff some or all of his creditors. When you think about it, it’s a really sad story. Too much fame and money is not too good. You gotta stay grounded. Look at all these pro football players, who after their playing days were over…bankrupt. I think the only people making money are the agents.
Apparently, all you need to do is be an early round draft pick to set yourself for life. If I were a veteran, I would be bitter about it. I’m surprised that the players’ union hasn’t done something about it.

I like to think that there are several traits that make up a person’s character and not all of them are always redeeming.
Michael certainly had many faults, whether or not they were of his own doing or experiences in his life molded them. Looking at the positive influence he had to motivate celebrities to get involved with helping those less fortunate, is what I will remember. Whether or not, the accusations were legitimate is for some higher authority to deal with now. His music crossed many boundaries and is relevant today, even among our youth.
I’m not a Michael Jackson loyalist, but I also wasn’t an Elvis groupie (a little before my time, although my daughter is). Michael’s death reminds me of Elvis’, with many of the same questions surrounding it, the prescription drugs and mystery surrounding their individual lives.
Just my thoughts!
When you get down to the meat and potatoes of the entire deal of the Road Warrior gameplan it is greedy. Personally not sure if the word “greed” is completely accurate as opposed to “misguided”. We know Koa Anuenue is non-profit, but either they had too much faith in UH fans for road games or they have no clue as to the repercussions of their plan for away games and how it would negatively effect fans or WORSE… how other schools would profit off of UH fans.
I for one have never had the privilege to go on a road game YET, so I cannot fully understand the frustration a lot of the Tsaikos feel when trying to organize their trips accordingly.
However I will not make apologies when I say that I think it 😡 SUCKS 😡 that more fans will have to resort to buying tickets from another university for UH away games and having OTHER schools profit off of UH fans, especially when Koa Anuenue’s supposed plan for this is to “keep the cupboard full” for scholarship funds for UH athletes. Ultimately it’s no one’s fault other than those making the decisions.
In the end it will hurt UH athletics more than helping UH athletics and AGAIN the decision makers are going to have to learn from mistakes.

The good news in all this was that I was able to get Ronnie’s three seats moved next to my three seats without going through the same stupid communication as d1!

RE: UH ticket office organization.
Past issues reported by others is what causes me to literally keep a file at my desk for my football season ticket purchases.
I always keep a photocopy of my receipt and seat requests in a folder along with the carbon copy of the check I wrote along with a printed page of my checking account statement indicating the check cleared.
Not to mention noting the names of the ticket office people I speak with and the time in which I called.

As I understand it (and maybe I am wrong), if I buy x amount of tickets at the opponent’s ticket office which has a handling fee of say $5.00 and say we are talking about 1000 tickets, it means we are giving the opponents $5,000 to support their team.
Now, if the UH box office people get on the stick and service our people promptly, efficiently and timely, the “service” fee (assuming it goes to the athletic office) means we are “donating” $5,000 to our team.
And I would think it would be better to give the money to our team than to theirs!
Of course this presupposes that the UH box office will service our people promptly, efficiently and timely – but maybe that is presupposing too much!

Like i said yesterday, I think the UH people have come to believe they are diong the right thing just because people do not have any other choice in Hawai’i. With only one ticket source what are the alternatives?
Anywhere else (UH away games) there are multiple ticket sources that are extremely organized and communicate well. In fact, they usually charge less than what the UH is trying to extort. $50 for the right to purchase four tickets? Then add a $10 fee/ticket plus the price of the ticket. Are these people crazy?
While I am all for supporting the Warriors with a donation I do not respond well to extortion. The Road Warrior plan is extortion that would work IF there were only one ticket source. They made a big mistake. There are at least four other ticket sources available for the WSU game and who knows how many for the UNLV game.

The plan is good only if UH takes a firm stand. If there are 2,500 tickets, and 1,200 are purchased through the plan, then they should return the 1,300. Either everybody pays a fee — through the plan or by being a sponsor or by joining a booster club — or nobody pays.

I never understood the whole “fainting” thing when Michael Jackson was at the peak of his world-wide popularity.
Then again, I was never a 12 year-old girl.
I share everyone’s feelings about the new UH Road Warrior Package ticket plan thingy. As was previously noted, this is simply a fee on top of a fee and is something that even I will not subscribe to.
Last season I went to four of the six UH road games. The Road Warrior ticket plan would work out well if UH actually sold out their entire allotment of road game tickets on a regular basis…..but as it stands right now we don’t even get half of them sold unless it’s Vegas or a big-time BCS venue.
There are some venues in the WAC where attendance is so bad that you can literally walk up and buy your tickets near (or even in) the UH section 10-20 minutes before kickoff. This is what I did for last year’s NMSU game in Las Cruces. What’s the use of the Road Warrior plan if the road team will still have good kine seats near the UH section in the hours/minutes leading to kickoff?

Thank you for your post #67. We had a great time and learned a lot. It was really nice that our tour guide was someone who lived on the plantations at Lapahoehoe (and even went to school with) my Mom and the rest of her siblings.
My only complaint is that we had to get there at 10:45am and the tour ended after 1pm and no food was provided! Luckily, my Mom made spam musubi for my family…I don’t know how I could have walked and listened to the tour guide for 2+ hours without any food during lunch time!

Regarding your post #73, I think that the Road Warrior program is mainly for Warrior fans who live on the mainland. They are the ones that mainly travel to UH’s road games in San Jose and other places. This is not to discourage people from going to games at Aloha Stadium, the mainland Warrior fans want to be able to get tickets to support the team at their road games!
It would be really sad if Warrior fans on the mainland have to go through the other school’s ticket office to get tickets, giving them the extra money instead of UH.
Thinking about it, the timing for the Road Warrior program is off. If they did this in some year that UH played a Florida or USC on the road, the package would be more attractive because UH fans would know that those ticket allotments would sell out!
Also, if UH didn’t sell out of the tickets to games like that, the fans of the other team would happily pay the $50 and $10 per ticket fees to be able to get seats at Florida or USC. That would rack up some big $$$ for UH.
I’ll bet there’s a back room dart tournament going on… :))

since Meiling mentioned basketball, Ferd posted that Dana is about 5’4, ST and I had a different perception of her height – 5’3 or 5’7….coach Dana needs a post coach period, teaching footwork, the #4 and #5 learning to work with their back to the basket, getting physical with the post player to give them a good work out, etc..hard to do with a munchkin…maybe Mufi and volunteer his time

K-State announced its non conference basketball schedule, how close is the UH at completing its schedule…aware of the Diamond Head Classic but that was done through ESPN…early scheduling allows time to market and sell tickets over a longer haul, especially for road games to book transportation, hotel, etc…
Al i’ll be there on wednesday, i just hope i can find something i can eat- not into japanese food…

UH football team beach workouts
Excellent video Leila. In a on camera interview UH strength coach Heffernan explains how having a workout at the beach breaks the monotony. I watched the players as they were going thru drills that they would normally do back at campus. And it was all out efforts, which really surprised me. I noticed how each player exerted a lot of enthusiasm and energy into their workout. I would have thought the workout, especially at the beach would be mixed with RR. But no… noticed how the players were working up a sweat. Good job team. A deserved red plum for you guys. About the girl practicing with the team, the one with the red top and black shorts…now she had some moves…wow… a deserved red plum to her, too.

Pete Newell was about 6-2
6’2 is a lot better than 5’3, but everything is relative…the men he worked with were a lot taller and were truly big men..from what I remember, Newell spent a lot of time working on footwork and movement…not much mentioned about teaching shooting skills.

Awesome video once again! I really enjoyed watching the beach workout, and that is something that should especially resonate with recruits due to the unique nature of the workout. Getting variety in their routine is a great way to keep motivation high and should pay off on the field this season.

Good night Liz! I can go to sleep after finishing the goal I set for today on my proposal. Societal Impact and Commercialization Strategy sections…not the most fun things to write!
Re Tsukiji’s – is there any other option other than the buffet? If not, what’s the cost? The only time I ever ate there was before I got religion so I don’t remember if there were any vegetarian options. Since I’m already committed to paying for food I’m not going to eat on the Fourth of July – more for the rest of you – doing the same thing four days earlier is not good for the pocketbook.
Hopefully both buffets will have plenty desserts.
