With the controversy surrounding King James’ post-game behavior, reporters appreciate Greg Alexander and Inoke Funaki. Even after difficult losses, they answer questions. With leadership comes responsibility.

  1. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:19 am

    Interesting.

  2. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:21 am

Bryant Moniz looked real good at the spring game. Outstanding for someone who had very little reps in practice. He seems like a natural.

  3. Ralph June 3, 2009 12:23 am

    top five, hello pride

  4. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:26 am

    Hi Ralph.

  5. Ralph June 3, 2009 12:26 am

Pride are u coming to the cc tomorrow?

  6. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:28 am

I thought that Brett Leonard had a good spring. I’m surprised to see him at number three. I thought that Clayton Laurel had gotten hurt during the spring.

  7. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:28 am

Ralph, that will be a gametime decision.

  8. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:32 am

It was always my opinion that the offensive line would be a 100% better with a ten to fifteen pound loss per man across the board. Of course who am I to talk. I would be 100% better looking with a 195 to 200 pound loss per man.

  9. Pride. June 3, 2009 12:33 am

Maybe I should skip a cc or two.

  10. Ralph June 3, 2009 12:37 am

come to the cc, just don’t eat! 🙂

  11. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 1:31 am

Greg Alexander – Will we see another 4,000yd. passer this year?…I think yes, the weapons are loaded…we’ll see.

Receiving Corps – Is Rodney Bradley ready to continue the tradition of dominate wideouts? Will Malcolm Lane stay focused? Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares are going to destroy secondary’s. Will we see a tri-fecta of 1,000yds. receiving again?

Running Backs – LWJ, time to put the hype into reality, we know you can… No one will be ready for the wrath of Hurricane “Inoke”…nobody!

Oline – Stay humble, Stay disciplined, you will dominate, I have no doubt!

  12. Ralph June 3, 2009 1:42 am

ticket sales going down this season because of the recession and Central Arkansas as our opening day game, not a whole lot of excitement, the AD decides to move up Charleston Southern to 2010 and schedule another D1aa team for 2011…if JD wants more season ticket holders then he should schedule D1 teams…paying for D1aa plus WAC bottom feeders Idaho, Utah State and New Mexico State doesn’t make economic sense…

  13. Ralph June 3, 2009 1:44 am

moniz can also play the wildcat or Noke position. T formation or single with moniz, inoke and LWJ in the backfield in the red zone…

  14. Ralph June 3, 2009 1:45 am

    with=wing

  15. Ralph June 3, 2009 1:46 am

what time is it in Iraq?

  16. Ralph June 3, 2009 1:47 am

Al must be resting for the CC….where’s Hiflyer tonight?

  17. Jason June 3, 2009 2:02 am

Hmm, that depth chart looks right to me. We’ll have to see if anything changes in the fall, but it looks good. I still say Billy Ray should redshirt. I’d rather him give us four solid years after getting a little stronger. And we’ll have to see what happens at LT; Kia looks better now that he’s healthy, but Laurel and Leonard were improving.

  18. Ralph June 3, 2009 2:11 am

Jason you’re up late, how’s koa mahu treating you tonight….if you can make it to the CC in one piece, join us…

  19. Ralph June 3, 2009 2:14 am

I hope the incoming freshmen will add a fourth layer to the interior o line. Leru and Pepa have not been healthy the last few seasons…I hope these young players get to fulfill their dream of playing D1 fb this season injury free.

  20. Jason June 3, 2009 2:18 am

Koa Mahu?!?! There are plenty shadows around where s/he could be hiding. Geez, and I was about to go to bed. Now I don’t think I can fall asleep, I’m terrified!

BTW, it’s Ieru, not Leru. And yeah, I’ll be there at the CC. See you there, Ralph.

  21. NYUH June 3, 2009 2:18 am

    Seeing Green!

I’m impressed that the WAC kicked MWC’s ass in the ESPN poll as to who would make the BCS this year. Shows the value of the WAC brand.

  22. wafan June 3, 2009 3:02 am

    Good morning!

  23. wafan June 3, 2009 3:03 am

Thanks you, Mr. Tsai, for the O and D depth charts.

  24. Ralph June 3, 2009 3:26 am

good morning wafan…..we’ll eat a lot of kalbi for you at the cc today….and you won’t gain any weight….

  25. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 4:48 am

Ralph it’s almost 6 in the evening here so if bruddah Jason can do the math…I think it’s like 13 hours ahead or sumtin laddat…

  26. djmitcho June 3, 2009 5:13 am

Good Morning Tsaikos! Half way through the work week. It’s another beautiful day here in the inland northwest.

  27. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 5:13 am

Jason, I agree about Billy Ray, but bruddah is already mean and could be productive right now and help us out. He already better than Coach Craig lol. I think a year of learning, lifting, and gaining more speed and agility will make him a 4yr. beast at wideout. From what I’ve heard about him so far, he could be the next big time receiver for us… I could just see him scoring couple times on them Trojan boys…

  28. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 5:16 am

    Sawp djmitcho,
Eh so what, we going be starting up one Tsaiko Bowl Fantasy Football League this year? Gotta get all the boys involved and hold one draft again. I know early but frikk all this talk about football getting me amped for the season already…

  29. djmitcho June 3, 2009 6:03 am

    PB,
    Of course!

  30. whitey June 3, 2009 6:17 am

Good morning Tsaikos. Again the offense looks good, but the incoming will make it look better.

  31. d1島 June 3, 2009 6:18 am

    Great Morning All!

    Pauoa Boy,

Agree wicchu, LWJ gotta be a promise fulfilled this year and the O-line needs to adopt a workman-type attitude. If those two things happen, the passing game will soar again.

  32. d1島 June 3, 2009 6:19 am

Feels like the trades are back 🙂

    Erryboddy have a terrific day!

    HiHo…

  33. whitey June 3, 2009 6:20 am

The left wo position is overflowing w/speed and players.

  34. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 6:25 am

    Whitey:
LWO also is deeper when you consider that Salas can line up over there, too.

  35. Kekoa June 3, 2009 6:48 am

    wf2 ~ Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Re: #326 last night.

Mahalo for the ‘Tube’ vid of Troy. Da Braddah can jam! Also, got to mention our own Tsaiko Ukulele Boi. Wouldn’t you know he is the son of Aunty Liz!

I got the rough translation of your message, and I concur. In return I would suggest that you consider this offer to join us. Mai kakou e pu ‘ai Cabana A. (09/04/09)

  36. jm2375 June 3, 2009 6:53 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Last day of work before vacation. 😀

Have a great time at the CC today. I know Jason will eat my share (and his and someone else’s)

Congrats to Stuzmanns and the Tsais.

    Off to work. bbl

  37. 808Chef June 3, 2009 7:03 am

Good morning all! Hey Stephen…you think you can 5-finger one of those strength and conditioning books for me? Preferbably a OL one? After my DR visit yesterday and needing testing for sleep apnea, I think I might need one. Seriously!

  38. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 7:13 am

    Nice chart…

Looks to me like the #4 and #5 guys are being given a chance to compete for one of the top 3 spots or redshirt for the season. I like that we are at least three layers deep in each position.

The names on offense pose little or no difficulty for non-local announcers. I believe that’s somewhat different from the names on defense.

  39. MeiLing June 3, 2009 7:17 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

Mahalo nui loa, Big Wave! I’ll probably share it w/ MsLiz.

  40. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! June 3, 2009 7:18 am

    Top 40!

  41. koakane™ June 3, 2009 7:18 am

quick good morn before heading out. what happened to dem trades man looking to be a scorcher already in the 80’s.

play nice and have a good day.

  42. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! June 3, 2009 7:21 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Tanks, wf2 – yup, we are proud of Jordon! Actually, Waimea fb has not quite been the same since Jordon and Kenny Estes graduated.

    MeiLing – mahalo!
I might get a copy if I can get myself to JJ’s soon.
BTW- hope Jett works out hard this summer and gets back on the roster…

  43. Jack Flash June 3, 2009 7:26 am

I won a mag yesterday? Auryte! Mahalos BigWave96744. Offense depth looks great. PLEASE- no injuries…

  44. jojo ® June 3, 2009 7:27 am

    Top 50!!!

    Good Morning!

Happy Birthday to my little girl, who is now taller than me.

  45. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 7:30 am

UH opens against USC in 2010, and possibly 2012, and 2013? Get the hard stuff out of the way early and the rest will be easy, huh? Sheesh.. I like it but now I know why McMackin and Company have offered 16, 3 to 4-star players already.

  46. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 7:36 am

I think it’s always great that USC wants to play UH.
But I find it puzzling that UCLA absolutely does not want to play UH. I think it probably would have helped UCLA in the Manti competition if it even pretended to want to play UH.

  47. MeiLing June 3, 2009 7:46 am

Happy birthday, joje! (Is that right, jojo?)

Pride. ~ Check out Shintani’s Wai’anae diet. My brother-in-law is losing weight, bringing his cholesterol & blood pressure down. Can eat all the poi you like.

    808Chef ~ C-PAP works for sleep apnea.

[Disclaimer: go see your doc; I’m not a kahuna lapaʻau.]

  48. MeiLing June 3, 2009 7:52 am

After watching the team last season, one thing stood out. The stamina of the O-line needs work. What kind of running workout would build that stamina? A-House – running uphill?

  49. 808Chef June 3, 2009 7:52 am

MeiLing…I heard about that. We’ll wait and see after my consult with the sleep DR. Thanks!

Stephen… so you think you can pull it off?? Serious.

  50. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 8:00 am

I dunno why UCLA scared for play us. I thought Norm Chow was the man and can have his offense run up the score on us. Wasn’t he the guy talking crap when he was OC for USC, saying we lucky he never run up the score. Saying that he could’ve had his offense score on every possession. Pulease brah, for one guy who grew up in the island, he get pilau style.

  51. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 8:01 am

    MeiLing,

Part of it may have been conditioning…but I also think a good part of it was inexperience and less than perfect techniques. Both make you work harder than you need to and adds to the frustration that exacerbates and wears you down. Another year under their belts with new coaches to help teach them the proper techniques hopefully will make a huge difference. Having three layers of backup in each position doesn’t hurt, too.

  52. MeiLing June 3, 2009 8:06 am

    mih,

I thought they had cut out one of the killer running drills last year. Was it to prevent leg/ankle injuries?

Off to the farmer’s market. Esme & out… laters.

  53. jm2375 June 3, 2009 8:11 am

OK, I’m in the office now.

Interesting stuff on the radio this am. First, so AM-1500 couldn’t find anyone to sub for Portnoy? I noticed it was a national(?) feed, so I went back to BC.

BC made comment that if the NFL labor contract not signed by next year, 2011 will be an uncapped year. What I didn’t realize is that the teams must spend a minimum amount ($80M?) under the cap. This would go away if no cap and teams like the Packers and Cards would probably spend way less, whereas owners like Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder 👿 would probably act like the Steinbrenners and go way overboard. I wouldn’t mind the Skins spending the money, but he never seems to spend it wisely…

  54. jm2375 June 3, 2009 8:14 am

re: running – need to get those guys doing the Mike Wilton test – running up Frank St (or Wilhemina Rise) 😆

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid June 3, 2009 8:19 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Go Big O!

Lotsa talent on that chart, lotsa depth. I think the offense will keep UH in the game while the defense jells in the first couple of games. Looking at the two depth charts, offense and defense, and it’s not hard to imagine that we could have a good team this year, definitely hella better than 5 or 6 in the WAC.

  56. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 8:23 am

    jm2375,

I always thought that sprints did more for stamina than long distance or resistance running in sports that needed sudden bursts of energy. Running uphill though would develop the muscles you need to thrust. So lunging up hill with three step bursts while practicing those sumo type open hand thrusts to one’s opponent’s chest and shoulders would probably be one heck of a workout.

  57. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 8:23 am

Maybe the OLineman could do some interval type agility drills to build some stamina and help with there footwork. Have like couple agility/footwork stations set up and have the Olineman go all out for 2 minutes each drill and then rest 30 seconds while transitioning to the next station then 2 minutes again for a total of say 30 minutes. After that take 5 minute break and then back at it again for another 30 minutes. Garrans they going be dying at first but once they get used to the intensity they should be au’ryte. Then come game time the footwork going be good to go, and they not going get lazy cause they get stamina. I figure something like this would be better than just running cause it will help them be agile and teach them to move there feet and wall off defenders better. IMO

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid June 3, 2009 8:23 am

    jm@#$%-

That’s a great idea! But like pride, I’m not one to talk. I’d prolly manage 20 steps or so up that hill and then collapse, hopefully into a cooler of ice cold beers.

  59. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 8:33 am

At the end of the 2008 volleyball season, one of the redshirts came into Mike Wilton’s office, carrying a picture of a muscle man. The redshirt said that he would look like muscle man when he returned at the end of the summer.
Unfortunately, he came back looking like a volleyball reporter.
The player couldn’t pass the Frank Street test and ended up quitting the team.

  60. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! June 3, 2009 8:35 am

DPK- that would be 10 more steps than I could go!

    HAUOLI LAHANAU, JOJE!!!

    Who is king james???

    HIHO!

  61. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 8:41 am

Maybe they could build a sumo ring somewhere on the top of the practice summit and have contests where only the open handed thrust and slap down techniques can be employed. That would build stamina, good footwork, speed, and allow the fans and players to have fun while developing skills.

  62. Stretch June 3, 2009 8:41 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    Stephen Tsai:

he came back looking like you??!!?? No wonder he never pass the Frank St test.

  63. warriorfanny2 June 3, 2009 8:45 am

good to see this website chatin-it-up on what counts–conditioning.
its one thing 4 a team to beat u on the field w superior talent and its sad if we beat ourselves cuz we r not in shape….like last year….will continue later late pm, time permitin. im enjoying reading through all the thought processes and plz i mean that in a fraternal n positive sense. keep it kickin and an aunty liz whoo0000oosh to all.

  64. A-House June 3, 2009 8:53 am

    Mei Ling:

Your #48 – they got to run in the sand and I don’t mean only 1 lap – Ala Moana beach sand is good – nearly 3/4 mile one-way. Also, running up Wihlemina Rise or any steep hill is good.

Main thing is start small – maybe 1 lap and walk under the shade near Kewalo Basin and back to Magic Island – keep it up and they will run 6 full laps without stopping to rest in bewteen – takes a lot of discipline!

This is what the off-season training is for.

  65. homey ℞ June 3, 2009 8:56 am

    Good morning all.

Happy Birthday to jojo’s little girl.

Good to see names next to positions.

Time to head out to lunch.

  66. A-House June 3, 2009 8:59 am

“off to lunch”? not even mid-morning yet?

oh yea, forgot you start working real early!!

Ooooh good idea. Everybody knows doing anything in the sand is that much harder (hey get your mind out of the gutters. It’s too early for that). Better idea, make a hill out of sand and have them run that.

How about good ol fashioned stadium stairs? Does anybody watch 4th and Long? Those drills are BRUTAL.

  68. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 9:12 am

The players run the stairs every day.
They alternate. One day they’ll do the Cooke/Ching steps.
Another day they’ll do the stairs leading from the Lower Campus to Upper Campus. That’s about a five-story distance each way.
My brother, who climbs mountains around the world for fun, trained for treks in Argentina and Russia by running up stairs at a Waikiki condo.

  69. Kekoa (iPhone) June 3, 2009 9:14 am

Big Wave ~ I had my acceptance speech all written yesterday. The delete monster must have sent it off to never-never land. I’m humbled by your selection. Much Mahalo! I’ll be sure to share it with this sporty group of Tsaiko’s I know.

I would be in a more celebratory mood if I weren’t so stressed out over this root canal procedure in about an hour…Groan!

    Enemy Uni-watch alert:

As if we needed any more reasons to hate Boise State they roll out these atrocious uniforms…

Thereby making all Boise State home games completely unwatchable (is that a word? well it is now.) for fear of having your eyeballs melt from the combination of the blue turf and ugly uniforms:

    Happy Birthday JoJe…or is it Jeje…or jejo…or jojo…aiyaahhh…

  72. Pride. June 3, 2009 9:35 am

Boise got cool unis. I like them.

  73. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 9:38 am

    OK, stop the madness.
Those uniforms either should be banned or BSU should go back to having green turf.
Or maybe UH should unveil sun-faded green home uniforms (complete with little black dots to simulate the FieldTurf granules).

  74. Jack Flash June 3, 2009 9:46 am

I’ll bet on TV the Boise players will virtually disappear. Maybe espn will drop some of Boise’s home games.

  75. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 9:49 am

OK, OK. Let’s work on a compromise. Boise keeps the unis. UH gets to bring back the orange balloons.

  76. Stephen Tsai June 3, 2009 9:49 am

Hey, what time is the CC today?

  77. Jack Flash June 3, 2009 9:50 am

Jim Donovan is absolutely kicking A$$ in the football scheduling department.

  78. A-House June 3, 2009 9:52 am

Interesting that he BCS Buster writer does NOT even mention Boise State travelling to Hawaii as a stumbling block to an invite. HOW RUDE!!

Just gives the Warriors that much more incentive to whip their ass!

  79. al June 3, 2009 9:53 am

    noon.

  80. al June 3, 2009 9:53 am

    king james = lebron james

  81. al June 3, 2009 9:59 am

    pride.

i see your point that a 10-15lbs weight loss to increase their quickness, lateral movement, drop steps, etc. is more inducive towards our pass protection rather than heavy straight forward linemen.

  82. Dirty Commish June 3, 2009 10:00 am

    OK, stop the madness.
Those uniforms either should be banned or BSU should go back to having green turf.
Or maybe UH should unveil sun-faded green home uniforms (complete with little black dots to simulate the FieldTurf granules).

AND they should be able to add rolls of paper/newspaper/confetti to the home uniforms to really blend in when the paper rain starts.

It will be like the Aloha Stadium version of a Ghillie suit.

*Ghillie suits are specialty camouflage suits worn by hunters/snipers and REALLY blend in to the environment as seen here:

  83. Pride. June 3, 2009 10:01 am

    Good luck Kekoa.

  84. roysan16 June 3, 2009 10:04 am

Re-Why do we always “accommodate” ESPN??

    (From the UH site)
“In addition, the 2010 contest at Aloha Stadium originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 4, will be moved to Thursday, Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. HT to accommodate ESPN, which will pick up the game on one of its stations”.

Why does the UH sell the UH fans short? Do you think if the shoe was on the other foot USC would opt scheduling a Saturday game for a Thursday matchup? No, probably never because they (athletic administrators) probably thinking there comes a time where that fan’s entrusted loyalty for the team should suppercede monies that ESPN gives to the team. A Thursday matchup, IMO, is like they the UH athletic admin, is pimping the team.. I don’t like this at all. I mean what could have been a enjoyable Saturday tailgating for the game in exchanged for a Thursday matchup, where there be less excitement in the air because fans and working families having a harder time getting out to the stadium for the 530 start.. Not good.

  85. COPO June 3, 2009 10:04 am

Boise State Unif’s are cool I agree with Pride.

  86. ai-eee-soos June 3, 2009 10:11 am

Congrats to Kolt Wong – Frosh All-American. (Louisville Slugger Poll)

  87. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 10:14 am

    Roysan16,

While I can appreciate where you are coming from, consider this. There will be no swapmeet so fans can show up earlier, our players get additional national exposure at a time that people will still be up and watching, AND you have over one year to figure out how you’re going to get that day off.

Weren’t there a number of top teams that played on Thursdays or Wednesdays last season that got upset? Like it was a curse?

Imagine if UH wins?!? ESPN would be scrambling all over the place and bending over to give Hawaii more exposure for the remaining 13 games.

  89. al June 3, 2009 10:24 am

what price espn, national exposure, tv bucks?

the real fans will attend the game no matter.

playing in the hot confines of aloha stadium on a sunny afternoon would be an advantage i always thought.

plus, the commercial that is the game is priceless for the state’s wounded tourist industry.

being on espn just makes sense for the sport and the economics are immense.

  90. al June 3, 2009 10:26 am

    Defensive observation and analysis:
    CB:
Melvin Hopkins – Strengths: Quick feet, athletic, demonstrated consistent tackling ability during Spring drills, quick study – transitioned well from JC to UH coaching of RM. / Weakness: Hasn’t started D1 game, discipline to not jump short routes and allow WO to get behind him, size.

Jeremy Bryant – Strengths: Aggressive, competitive, athletic, plays fast, smart. / weakness: Because of aggressive play can be susceptible to double moves and play-action passes, size.

..go for the trifecta JD in the 2011 season, too, while you’re at it.

Kicking off the season this coming year and the next on a weekday not many fans relish–it’s not the way to kickoff the season, where the fans are bemoaning the fact the games are on weekdays.

The trade off of having these game on the weekday puts monies in the UH pocket from ESPN–agreed. But I also think it turns off people, too. And the trickle down effect of fans turned off by these weekday game–takes monies out of the UH pocket.

But what UH should realize from their gains from ESPN is short lived. Whereas coveting the fans and supporters should be long lived.

    Pauoa Boy,

  107. Krebs June 3, 2009 11:22 am

I’ve been starting to like Boise St. a lot. At first, I didn’t like them because they started beating UH a lot. But then, I realized that over the years that the Broncos were really, really good for a sustained period. Considering they don’t get a lot of pub because they’re in the WAC and they don’t get hardly any 4 or 5 star players, they have something in their system that works. I don’t know what it is, but considering that they are a powerhouse from Idaho can you imagine is very, very impressive.
Heck, I like their new uniforms by Nike. Nike is the best. And, gray is one of my favorite colors. It complements the dark colors very well.
Hawaii will always be my favorite team, but I admire Boise St. for what they do. Shoot, they beat up the Mountain West too. Boise St. is too good for the WAC. They should leave the WAC and join the Mountain West. Don’t laugh. That could very well happen in a year or two. If Boise St. joins the MWC that conference would be strong enough to be BCS worthy. I’m telling you, it’s coming and very soon. And another thing, La Tech should not be in the WAC. It doesn’t make any sense.
Let the debate open up again. New Mexico St. is a joke. Idaho is almost a joke. Utah St. was a joke until they beat Hawaii last year. For the future, I don’t know what Hawaii will be doing, but I see the WAC getting less and less respect especially when Boise St. joins the MWC. It’s going to happen. Heck, Karl Benson doesn’t care. He’s an alumni of Boise State!!!!!! P.S. I would love to see Hawaii play UCLA, but I don’t know why they won’t play us. We’ve played every other team in the PAC 10 a least once before….even Stanford and Cal. I don’t know what’s UCLA’s problem. Its not like they’re Top 25.

  108. SteveM June 3, 2009 11:27 am

    Kazz & Florida Ted:

As much as I dislike Boise State, one must admire they record over the past 8 years.

Does not matter who the coach or players are, they just keep winning! Unlike, UH which goes into many valleys and up steep mountains – no consistency!

Like Kazz says, what are they doing that keeps their football program so “top shape”? Could it be that there is NOTHING to do in Boise, ID so players can concentrate on football? LIke many “inner city kids”, playing basket ball is their major outlet.

  113. A-House June 3, 2009 12:07 pm

    RE: Boise State

By no means do I look forward to cheering for them anytime soon, but I have no ill feelings towards them. I respect what they have accomplished and I respect the BSU fans that I have met over the past 4 seasons at Aloha Stadium. A lot of them were gracious in defeat in 2007 and made the night for us even more “special” when a lot of them waited outside the gates in the North end zone to shake the hands of us Hawaii fans walking out.

That’s a hard thing to do as a conference foe.

  115. Kazz June 3, 2009 12:10 pm

    A-house,

It was fun “booing” him during the 2008 WAC Volleyball Tournament. I got a lot of dirty looks though.

I sat about a section away from where he was sitting with Jim Donovan. Was tempting to throw popcorn at him but I didn’t want to hit JD in the process. 😆

Good thing Chawan wasn’t sitting near me. It would have gotten nasty and personal!

  116. Kazz June 3, 2009 12:16 pm

    RE: Balloons

I know a lot of people were annoyed at the sound they made when people, especially little kids, starting rubbing them.

On one hand I can see how they can be construed as “artificial noise makers”, but unless people start bringing in horns OR COWBELLS, whistles, or air horns, I don’t get what the problem is.

Not having them just makes the Stanley even MORE lifeless as it already is. God-bless the pep band and the UH cheerleaders and the few students who try to have fun, but it’s just a drab place a lot of the time.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOJE!!!

  118. roysan16 June 3, 2009 12:31 pm

For USC these are the pluses to playing UH

    1. One extra game on their schedule
    2. Tune up to their season
    3. Gives reserves a chance to play in a lopsided game
    4. Gives their fans a chance to travel with the team out here to Hawaii
    5. Gives the DC prep work on defending the run and shoot.
    6. Gives the OC prep work with the 4-3 look and nickel packages
    7. Gives the team acclimated to traveling long distances away from home, where maybe later in the season when USC travels afar this experience and preparation maybe prove valuable
    8. Allows the players to see Hawaii
    9. A recruiting incentive
    10. Allows the USC players with ties to Polynesia or to Hawaii enjoy the pageantry of the game. And visiting Hawaii and friends.

  119. Jack Flash June 3, 2009 12:34 pm

    roysan16-
What are the pluses for UH?

  120. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 12:36 pm

Boise has a storied history in football dating back to their Div II days. They have put more into football than any other sport and the records show it. They have the history and therefore the fans.

Hawaii has always been lukewarm in their approach to UH and the football program. Had the State invested the monies necessary to bring this program to the highest possible level, I’m convinced that we’d have luxury boxes, three times the die hard fans and bigger donors for the program. Of course, as a result many of us would be priced out of the ‘live’ seats and have to settle for watching on bigscreens elsewhere but the program would be leaps and bounds ahead of where it is and the rest of the athletic department would have reaped the benefits.

  121. Jack Flash June 3, 2009 12:39 pm

    ST-
Just curious, but what are the payouts for the UH vs USC games?

  122. roysan16 June 3, 2009 12:41 pm

    Jack,

There are a lot of pluses for UH, too. The quick answer because I’m in a hurry is that I’m of the belief that the next generation of kids watching UH playing the best teams in the nation–and maybe taking it in the chin–will inspire them to be better.

  123. jonj June 3, 2009 12:43 pm

what happened to the warrior beat show yesterday??

  124. Da Punchbowl Kid June 3, 2009 12:48 pm

There are many reasons to admire and respect Boise State’s football program. Blue turf which hides blue uniforms is not one of them. I would love to know if our players think this gives Boise an unfair advantage at home. What have you heard, Mr. Tsai?

  125. Jack Flash June 3, 2009 12:51 pm

    roysan,
Agreed. Plus with football… you never know right? USC always seems to lose a game each season that they should’ve won, so maybe our turn comes one of these years. I’m just happy to see smart/challenging schedules emerging for the coming years- Service Academies, National Powerhouses, the resurrection of the old BYU rivalry, etc.

  126. Kazz June 3, 2009 12:53 pm

    JackFlash,

I’ll try to explain it in the same way USC supposedly pitched their case for a local recruit to sign with them:

(Imagine me looking down at you with my eyes closing from time to time to emphasize the smugness of my approach)

It is a privilege to play the almighty USC. To even be considered as an opponent, we should only be so lucky. To share the same field with the cream of the crop in college football and in life is a right only shared by a select few.

Sorry Coach Carrol cannot make it today, he sent me instead.

    😎

  127. A-House June 3, 2009 12:55 pm

perhaps some time in the near future, you and I and chawan can sit together to heckle Benson, if he is still around – that should be very noisey – don’t care if we get “dirty looks” – hey, it’s our way fo telling him that he is all not that good of a Commish!

Commish must admit that was a classy move for them to do. Commish knows how they feel since he had to turn around and congratulate the Redskins fan he was jawing back and forth with when he went to Dallas to catch a game, the last Cowboys vs. Redskins game at Texas Stadium ever. That one stung.

But he got to see Colt running out of the tunnel and back in and back out and back in. So that was cool.

Still… grrrrrrrrr!!! The blue field is the focus of the Commish’s ire. Literally hurts the eyes when you try to watch them on TV. Add the fact that the uniform is almost the same hue… that HAS to give them some kind of advantage.

Well I said that in jest as I love to take shots at SC any chance I get.

However, the approach isn’t a joke, well according to those in the “know” when it came to USC’s approach of recruiting a local prospect last season.

Sure I exaggerated it, but the general feeling was probably just as pilau.

  148. Committed Road Warrior June 3, 2009 2:00 pm

So if my senses are correct, the 2010 out-of-conference schedule is:

    9/2—–USC
    9/11—@ Army
    9/18—@ Colorado
    9/25—Charleston Southern (I-AA/FCS)
    12/4—UNLV

Looks like our string of consecutive nationally-televised season finales might come to an end in 2010…..or not. Unless UNLV stay really good in 2010, it just doesn’t seem to be as appeasing a matchup as we’ve had in previous season finales…..appeasing enough for ESPN to pick up.

Considering that 4 of the last 5 season finales were against Bull Crap Series teams, not too shabby.

Great… wonder how much athletics is gonna suffer from this.

The University of Hawaii system faces some $50 million in additional restrictions per year for the next two years under Gov. Linda Lingle’s plan to furlough state workers and cut education budgets, UH President David McClain wrote in an e-mail statement.

“There are various scenarios and several uncertainties as to how this situation may play out at the state level. As we monitor ongoing developments, my leadership team and I are working to craft an appropriate response for the university,” read McClain’s e-mail. “In this process we will be in discussion with our Board of Regents, campus chancellors and other constituencies within and external to the university, including of course the unions who represent our employees,” he wrote. The governor said she intends to restrict UH and Department of Education general funds expenditures in an amount equivalent to the three-day-per-month furlough she announced for other state employees. While UH has not received official notification of the dollar amount, McClain estimated it to be more than $50 million per year in fiscal year 2010 and fiscal year 2011.

  169. al June 3, 2009 2:43 pm

there was a karaoke star who wandered in, in search of some car wash parts (in a korean bbq buffet restaurant, i ask you?)

a scholarly young man walked and just sat down besides us. somebody find him a summer job. please.

a scholarly young man walked and just sat down besides us. somebody find him a summer job. please.

Would that be the one and only Jason?

  171. al June 3, 2009 2:49 pm

then when we were all done “a lady in red” asked to join our already full table. so naturally the bachelor “long haired leaping gnome” leapfrogged us all and sat with her on a side table.

tsaikos are not rude (well most of us are civil, really) so we all got up and went for more food (again, fifth trip). oh yah, much to the chagrin of the korean man.

i swear i saw him reach up and change the buffet prices before we left. then again sj/macro and his sidekick mavis (or is she the one who kicks his sides?) weren’t there for the first time ever so we couldn’t take advantage of those 10% coupons that they always bring. (korean man was happy. very happy).

  172. al June 3, 2009 2:50 pm

crw…you are getting good at this. should we make a game of it?

  173. SteveM June 3, 2009 2:51 pm

Sorry Al, I don’t mean to include jojo in with the others in driveways…

Say, did I accidentally put out another Cattle Call request in post #108? 👿

  174. al June 3, 2009 2:52 pm

sorry i busted your identity mavis, er, i mean myki. oh heck. should i just tell everybody your last name too?

  175. al June 3, 2009 2:55 pm

actually you should hold off since we are planning a secret one in two weeks for the young scholar of the blog. shhhh. don’t tell.

and i don’t know why you are thanking jojo. she didn’t save any for you.

  176. al June 3, 2009 2:56 pm

    know what i mean?

Ate some egg drop soup for lunch. Having Poi and lomi O’io for dinner. Feeling pretty good actually. I still wouldn’t want it to ruin my next CC opportunity.

SteveM ~ Actually, I heard the assistant ask if I was doing ok since I was scrunched ALL the way down in the chair. Doc had stuck that novocaine needle in and just left it there for awhile. I thought maybe ‘waterboarding’ was next! Kinda reminded me of mock POW training, only they weren’t supposed to make it that realistic!

Imagine… the redshirt-freshman of this coming season will have three opportunties to knock off USC. All at the start of the season. All the more reason to kick it into a different gear at the end of each season, through spring and summer and come back better than ever.

Games like these can only help Hawaii’s recruiting.

Figure that if you play an opponent enough times eventually you will beat ’em once. Just waiting for that time against USC.

The task is getting them while they are still on top of the college football landscape, and not when they are horrifically bad, a la 2008 Washington State.

  205. Committed Road Warrior June 3, 2009 4:14 pm

We had an afterschool luncheon for staff today to prepare for next school year. The theme was Hawai’ian. The career and technical education staff were in charge of bringing salads. So, I took in some lomi salmon, IZ cd’s, and for a treat some haupia.

I have lomi salmon and haupia for dinner tonight. HA!

The others brought in fried chicken, “Hawai’ian” and pepperoni pizza (how is that Hawai’ian when the pineapples probably came from Costa Rica?), and some other interesting foods containing pineapple.

Oh well, at least they tried.

Not to take anything away from Jim Donovan’s efforts, but we also don’t have an obvious and advertised threat like a Colt Brennan or Davone Bess right now.

When things start picking up with incoming or future recruits and we start really getting dangerous again, we’ll look unattractive to the bigger schools again.

  214. Kazz June 3, 2009 5:01 pm

    LizK,

That’s a good idea. I could sworn I remember Jim Donovan saying he’d look into offering the Stanley as a venue for concerts and shows.

It would be more revenue for UH.

  215. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] June 3, 2009 5:04 pm

Kazz- JD’s efforts could be demonstrating his commitment to taking UH to that “next level” we all were envisioning after the Washington game and before the Sugar Bowl.

  218. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] June 3, 2009 5:33 pm

Kazz- yup. UH has a LOT of “out of the box” opportunities to become more solvent and less dependent on the State for $$$.

It’s facilities, its resources, and especially its students can turn talent into assets with outward thinking.
Gone the “ivory tower” attitude, welcome the BEST gol-durn RESEARCH and DEVELOPMENT facility in the Pacific region.

    Think WESTWARD, not eastward.

THE DOE is thinking about standardizing the schools to match the rest of the US. Good idea if every child in Hawaii grows up in a household that speaks standard English at home and in the streets.

How about looking at what places like New Zealand, especially Auckland does for success. They have 2M people living in the largest Polynesian city in the world. A city that is spread out in low-rise communities like Oahu. To me, Auckland is a better example than our eastern-bordered neighbors.

    Did you guys see this?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9CE55wbtY

What is the goal of the education of our children? What can we do in our educational institutions that will address the needs of our future? Is the end result to produce more university professors? Or more specifically- if the public educational systems around the world (which have been in existence since the 19th century) were created to meet the needs of industrialism – is that still what need most in today’s world???

I dare say that if UH were to reinvent itself as an entity whose students learned by DOING (with the proper preparation in high, middle and elementary schools) – an unprecedented number of collaborative relationship could be developed with the companies, practitioners, and artists of the world that would revolutionize education. And make it viable economically.

    😆

Time to go home and make spicy pork!

I hear some folks saying that playing the USCs will hinder UH’s chances of getting into a bowl game.
    True.
    Maybe.
But think of it this way: the goal is to get to the Hawaii Bowl and play a Pac-10 team. This way, UH is guaranteed of playing a Pac-10 team during the season.

  227. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] June 3, 2009 6:38 pm

    Kazz- notchet.
    I gotta get home too.

  228. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] June 3, 2009 6:40 pm

    GO WARRIORS!

  229. madeinhawaii June 3, 2009 6:53 pm

What??? USC hinder the Warrior from getting to a bowl game?

    USC IS a bowl game…

Maybe we’ll see the debut of another superstar… who knows?

It’s all good. I figure USC will keep our players focused in the off season and they will work their tails off from January to August for the opportunity to line up against and play a top 10 team. And that can’t hurt.

Just put up a big banner in the locker room and weight lifting room at the end of next season… “Next Opponent… USC. Who’s gonna play?”

    What’s the occasion?

  232. Kazz June 3, 2009 7:26 pm

I’ve always favored a team being ready for the entire season as a whole rather than just one game.

During spring and fall practices last season I saw A LOT of the same routes and plays over and over again and when the Florida game came, it was like clockwork … well for the 1st quarter and it looked like all that focus was paying off as we were 0-0 with the ALMIGHTY TIM TEBOW with the florida gators after one quarter… but we know how that ended up.

The rest of the way… well we all know how the season went up and down at times.

If the one loss in 2010 was against USC, it will be an awesome year. 😛

  233. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 7:26 pm

I actually like the scheduling of USC and the rekindling of good ol BYU kitty cats. I’m not worried about our bowl chances being spoiled by a team like USC…more like they should be worried about us spoiling there bowl chances. They may have the big names, the athletes, money…but no mean nothing. Any team can win and I’m sure our Warrior Boys will prepare accordingly. It’s also good we play em first game of the season. Both teams will be raw and untested, but will leave the game with a better understanding of what to work on to progress through the season. Next season’s opener might be rough with a new QB, RB, OLineman, etc… but I have faith in our team that we’ll be au’ryte. I rather have a team who’s not afraid to face the big dog and compete, rather than a team that beats up on puppies to make themselves look good.

  234. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 7:30 pm

I also like the thought of bringing back Notre Dame for a little payback. Maybe that one linebacker guy might rethink his decision and come play for the team he should’ve chose in the first place. 🙂

(BTW, since Ching only provided half the moolah, they have to share the name.)

  237. FloridaTed June 3, 2009 7:37 pm

Playing up has never hurt anyone, that’s how Schools like FST, Florida and Miami came to prominence.

Little by little, who is to say that the Warriors can’t be one of the big boys? Keep up the recruiting every year with mostly 3 & 4 star freshmen and we’ll see where it takes us.

I’m glad we’re underdogs again, we’re always seem to play better that way, plus very little room for disappointment, lol.

Anybody who picks the Warriors low but is disappointed when they do, is a liar, 11 – 3.

  238. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 7:37 pm

Boise State uniforms is alright, at least it’ll make them feel good about something after we whoop that arse. I agree that Smurf Turf needs to go. I know someone posted previously about it, but the NCAA should make them change it to green like everyone else. To me how can you focus when all you see is blue on the field, and what makes them so special anyway?

  239. Garret June 3, 2009 7:42 pm

JD is showing how big of a contrast there is between his ability to schedule and the previous AD. Getting schedules made years in advance with USC and Army is awesome! I’m so glad that UH is no longer waiting to schedule games at the last minute, when teams already have their schedules filled.

  240. Garret June 3, 2009 7:44 pm

If nothing else, USC will insure great attendance at Aloha Stadium, which will be great for UH’s revenue. Home games like that will also drive season ticket sales and PPV.

  241. Garret June 3, 2009 7:45 pm

Samson was healthy enough to have his first practice with Oakland.

Raiders C Samson Satele has resumed practicing following offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum.
He’s lining up behind holdover John Wade, but that won’t last long. Satele, acquired via trade in March, has the athleticism to excel in Oakland’s zone blocking scheme, though he tends to struggle with massive nose tackles.

  242. Garret June 3, 2009 7:46 pm

RGM is back with the BC Lions.

Geroy Simon, Paris Jackson, Ryan Grice-Mullen and O’Neil Wilson are a reprise of the receiving corps, minus the popular and redoubtable Clermont, and Cory Rodgers is back after a year on the shelf.

  243. Garret June 3, 2009 7:47 pm

This will be a *long* bus ride…Cal will bus to their game at the Rose Bowl!

Because of the poor economy, coach Jeff Tedford has agreed to have the team bus to the UCLA game this season rather than fly. The Bears usually take charter flights to all road games, but the UCLA game is close enough that the team will travel by bus and save the athletic department a good chunk of change.

Feature on Colt and Chase Daniel.

In college, they combined to pass for more than 26,000 yards and 232 touchdowns, collegiate numbers that dwarf those of the Redskins’ top two quarterbacks, Jason Campbell and Todd Collins. In the NFL, both have been forced to fight for a job.

“We barely made it here, huh?” Brennan joked. “I was such a late draft pick, he was a free agent. You’d think for two guys that had that kind of success . . . but that’s just football.”

“They were two of the best quarterbacks in college football history,” said Redskins offensive assistant Chris Meidt, who works with the team’s quarterbacks. “You’re dealing with guys who know how to play the game. Colt is awesome — everyone saw him in preseason last year, Colt can really play the game. His fundamentals aren’t always where you’d like, so at least for him, we know what we have to work on. But he’s getting better; if you watch him and his fundamentals, he’s improving dramatically. So with him it’s a defined set that we have to improve on, because we know he can play the game.

  246. Garret June 3, 2009 7:51 pm

    Feature on Pisa.

Tinoisamoa said he could have signed with a few other teams that promised him a starting position, but would have felt awkward because he would have instantly been ahead of players experienced in the system who had been starters.

“I wouldn’t appreciate that (myself),” he said. “So I didn’t want to go into a situation like that, and the fact that I have to come and earn a job it definitely makes me more hungry because now I know I have to earn my job; it’s not just given to me.”

St. Louis hasn’t had a winning season since Smith left following the 2003 season to become head coach in Chicago. Tinoisamoa said the losing had a lot to do with his decision to sign with the Bears.

“The opportunity to win again; I miss that so much,” he said. “I want to get back to that.

“I feel like I’ve been putting in so much work for so long. I feel like I deserve a good chance to win and a good chance at the championship.”

Not Manti’s fault. However, had Coach Mack been in charge of recruiting for UH say oh… about at least 4 or 3 years ago we might of had a better shot at landing Te’o.

I think he was already getting a lot of attention when he was a sophomore in high school.

Had Coach Mack been here back then, UH may have been in Teo’s final cut.

    Pauoa Boy,

The thing that bothers me is the elite NTs get double-teamed by almost every team…so why should Samson be singled out for criticism when he had a serious injury? Is it a coincidence that the new management and coaching staff got rid of almost all the draft picks made by the previous management?

Miami drafted Beck earlier in the 2nd round the year they drafted Samson. Beck is so far buried on the depth chart that he’s just waiting to get cut…at least Samson had value on the trade market so he’ll get a chance to show what he can do.

Another example of the “my guy” syndrome…

Auloa Tonga was at practice today.
    The guy is huge.
He looks like a big-hitting safety or maybe an outside linebacker.
    He has really good footwork.
Only one downside: on one play, he was matched, one on one, against Rodney Bradley. You can imagine how that went.

  262. Pauoa Boy June 3, 2009 8:10 pm

    Garret,
True, and that’s a syndrome that will bite them in the rear and allow them the opportunity to never win a Super Bowl. I never liked that “my guy” attitude but we see it all the time. Especially people who play pick-up basketball games at the local gyms. Always have the regulars who always want to have there boys and stack teams or whatever. For me I always observed who the guys were that went all out and hustled. I would make sure they were on my team cause I wouldn’t have to worry about the lazy syndrome that happens when guys think they’re Lebron James. Cause they always tend to make excuses when they lose or call BS crap all the time…like who the heo would call 3 seconds or backcourt in a pickup game type of BSish…

    Washington State

PULLMAN — With the severe economic slump, the popular perception of Washington State’s proposed, dramatic “Phase 3” remodel to its football facility is that it might be deader than the Cougars’ prospects when USC came to town last fall.

As recently as September, all systems were go on the project, which was to have begun in the first half of 2009 and been completed by the 2010 football season. In fact, artist’s renderings of the remodel were prominent in the 2008 football media guide and recruits were wooed partly on the basis of that vision.

Barely more than two months later, however, WSU had scuttled the time frame because of the looming recession and what Sterk called a “nonexistent” bond market.

Now WSU might not wait until the recession subsides before moving ahead with its renovation.

Late last year, what was viewed as a $40 million project was to be financed with $16 million in donations and pledges, plus revenue bonds. WSU is now reassessing what funding model might fit if it built the facility at a reduced cost.

The project would have 18 luxury suites priced at $35,000 to $50,000 annually. Loge boxes — clusters of four or six semiprivate seats — are $9,000 to $15,000 a year. Club seats would go for $1,700 to $2,000 annually.

Sterk issued a cautionary note, saying, “There are a lot of ifs in there.” But the project is seen as necessary for WSU’s economic stability, especially with two other Northwest schools, Oregon and Oregon State, having done major upgrades in recent years to their stadiums.

From the “There’s one in every crowd” Dept.

    From wsufootballblog.com

You wonder if this cat has just used up his 9th and final life as a member of the WSU program. Xavier Hicks JR (yes, that Xavier Hicks Jr) was arrested on Monday afternoon while driving with a suspended license. If you are scoring at home, that’s now strike number four for the guy who just can’t seem to stay out of the way of the law.

But even though the latest mistake isn’t that big of a deal, maybe it’s time to look at the entire body of work and see someone making poor decision after poor decision? Remember:

    1) Credit-card theft and rubbing alcohol in a teammate’s contacts holder, which could have been extremely dangerous. Assault, 45 days in jail.
    2) Arrested for leaving jail by driving with a suspended license.
    3) Failed to show up for a work release program, and put back in jail as a consequence.

  278. d1島 June 3, 2009 8:56 pm

    …and for the Tsaiko gamers.

    also from the same blog

Hmmm. Seems as though EA Sports has launched their new “teambuilder” feature for the upcoming NCAA Football game, NCAA Football 10. You can check it out here (there is a quick registration, but it’s painless). A big tip of the hat to the Cougfan forums for finding this.

Why does this matter? Well, basically the feature of teambuilder added to this year’s game allows you, the user, to create a team online and then import it and play it in NCAA Football 10. Fair enough. A pretty cool little feature for getting your videogame geek on.

But one of the features is that in creating a team, you can choose EXISTING team uniforms, stadiums, logos, etc, and play them in the game. So, for example, say you wanted to recreate the 1997 WSU Cougar team, complete with stadium, uniforms, logo, etc. You can do that with the game.

One thing though. Because the game lets you choose existing uni’s? That means that the new WSU uniform is available as an option to choose from! That’s right, the new Nike uni’s are on the EA Sports website. Check it out.

  279. roysan16 June 3, 2009 8:58 pm

    Kazz,

Each of us take one orbit in life. For the players and fans, win or lose, having these games is something that all can relish. Take this once in a life time experience of playing the best team in the Nation and savor this opportunity as setting the ground work for the future UH teams that play USC. Take your one orbit in life and extract as much as you can. And playing the USC game certainly fills this void for the players, coaches and the fans.

A watered down schedule, playing cupcakes, and maybe cinching a bowl invite has it’s perks for the school. But it doesn’t define one as a player, a competitor, and as a man–as compared to having the chance of playing the USC’s…at least that’s the way I’d look at it if I were a player.

The dividends of taking your shots with the best can be immeasurable.Games, like this, you want seeds planted for the future. And you want them to someday germinate and pollinate in the minds of the Hawaii youngsters watching on.

Games against USC perpetuates a spirit that leaves the players endowed with the feeling they’re blazing the trails for the next. This, for the players, is so encompassing. And more of a greater feeling for themselves as a person and player than if they played cupcakes and limped into the bowl game (IMO).

Looks like BYU got the #1 rated QB recruit in the country.

Washington prep star Jake Heaps, who is rated by some recruiting Web sites as the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the country, has chosen BYU and will make the announcement this afternoon, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

According to the release, Heaps had offers from 26 programs as of June 1. He recently narrowed his list of favorites to BYU, Washington, LSU, California and Tennessee.

BYU and Washington have been considered the front-runners for the past few weeks.

Heaps is 28-0 as a starter for Skyline High in Sammamish, Wash., leading his team to state championships as a sophomore and a junior.

  319. Garret June 4, 2009 5:13 am

NY Times has SJSU as the #90 team in the country. I don’t really like their high point from last season, but it was SJSU’s best win.

High point: San Jose State’s only victory over an F.B.S. team with a winning record was a 20-17 win at Hawaii. As WAC fans will tell you, it is not easy to win in Honolulu. A 31-14 victory over New Mexico State put the Spartans at 3-0 in conference play, and a 30-24 win over Idaho two weeks put them at 4-1.

San Jose State opens its season with U.S.C. and Utah, two of the five B.C.S. game winners from a season ago. They are the only program in the F.B.S. to feature such a daunting first two weeks.
