Wilton casts exit vote
For another week, by state law, UH must post the job opening for Mike Wilton’s successor. Wilton believes the answer is apparent.
“I could end that charade right now if they would let me,” said Wilton, who is not a member of the search/selection committee. “They should pick Tino (Reyes, the associate head coach). It’s a no-brainer. I’m adamant it should be Tino Reyes.”
Wilton noted that Reyes has been in the program for 17 seasons.
What’s more, Wilton said, “He’s a brilliant coach. He’s keiko o ka ‘aina. If Hawai‘i hires him, he’ll become the first Hawaiian-ancestry head coach (at UH), to my knowledge. He’s paid his dues. He’ll be a great ambassador for men’s volleyball and the state of Hawai‘i.”

It was a long day for Greg McMackin, who hosted a clinic for football coaches and then conducted a two-hour practice (including a 77-play scrimmage). But after all of that, he managed to attend last night’s volleyball match. Basketball coaches Pat Charity and Jackson Wheeler also were there. It’s always nice when coaches support other programs.

I’ve always felt the turnstile counts were under-counted at the Stan Sheriff Center. Most people I spoke with agreed there were at least 3,500 in the house last night, not the announced 2,300. It’s been that way for other arena sports, coo. Or maybe we were wrong all along: Maybe the seating capacity is really 8,000.

Although I personally enjoy watching the running game more than the passing, I’m glad they are committing to going the the air attack. A balanced attack last year gave us a, well, balanced win-loss record.

Actually, the intent of the running game last year wasn’t by choice.
The JC quarterbacks weren’t ready last year, and Tyler Graunke missed training camp and then got hurt early in the season. The offense was tailored for Funaki’s passing. Plus, they needed a way to keep the defensive ends from teeing off.

What an awesome Saturday of sports!! We sat with all the other Tsai-kos at the Ching field to watch FB. Then we trotted over to the Les and enjoyed the back end of the double header with Sac State, for a split. The rubber game will be this afternoon. The highlight of the day was the awesome show at SSC. The fellows would not give in and just played the way they could have all season and took three sets to one to the delight of the crowd. The arena was rocking like it used to several years ago. It really was chicken skin time again. Hope that this is a sign to things to come. We ended our day at Genjis for some nabeyake udon and a cold one. Enjoyed the singing but most of all the company of good friends!!

I always thought earlier men’s vb coach Alan Rosehill was part- Hawaiian. Maybe not, I guess, just a local boy.
Tino was on the UH Hilo basketball team one year.
He caused two forfeit losses because he wasn’t eligible. Of course they should have done a better job of checking his transcripts before he was allowed to play.

UH will only give two of the three: issued and turnstile.
That’s because it doesn’t want people to know how many tickets are given away.
What I thought was odd is how both newspapers failed to give an estimate of the crowd attending yesterday’s Warrior’s practice and scrimmage.
Was this a purposeful omission because the numbers were too low?
If the Maui scrimmage generated around 3000 fans as reported in the UH website, yesterday’s turnout at Manoa was disappointing. Honestly, I don’t think there was not more than 500 in attendance. And if I were a wagering man, I’d bet it was closer to 400.
I also think Mike Sealey will give it a shot, although he’s supposed to be heir (and hair) apparent to Dave Shoji.

Interesting night and good to see so many stop by. Tina thanks everyone too. Now I can add 3 more names to the list of those who have closed Genji’s– ST, JaM and Brie. The other 6 closers already had that distinction. 🙂
It was great to see Kekoa and Pops. Pops sure looked wide awake and I hoped he enjoyed himself! He and Kekoa left a little after 0100, just missing Mei Ling?… 🙄
On my walk to yesterday’s Warrior’s football scrimmage, I crossed paths with the UH baseball fans attending yesterday’s baseball game, and I couldn’t help notice how impressive some of the fans look with their UH apparel on. In a split second I can see how wearing the UH colors and shirts with insignia and logos on speaks volumes of the type a person they are. This is really noticeable, and commendable to them. In other words,fans wearing the team colors and apparel are sending out a statement of support. And it’s perpetual. This is easily understood. But what’s not understood is to the ones that show up to the games, like myself, with any random color shirt I have on. And whom , like myself, are totally oblivious of wearing the team colors, and having a sense of pride in UH. So call it an epiphany moment and gaining a better perspective yesterday as I saw all the baseball fans up close in their green apparel. That was impressive seeing the ones wearing their green. And surely something I’ll be mindful and respectful of the next I show up at a sporting event.
What’s also noticeable as I walked the contours of athletic field complex (did I mention I walked thru Klum Gym for the first time) is that everywhere I looked I saw workers, administrators, concessionaires, athletic trainers in their official looking apparel, polos and jackets with the green and UH insignias.(I’m guessing the ones in the black polos are the administrators?) Even the coaches on the field had official looking jackets/shirts. And to an outsider this is really noticeable seeing this uniformity and cohessiveness because it say a statement about themselves and their school.
Since my last appearance at a UH practice was 5-6 yrs. ago, I was impressed this time more so than the last of how small little things like the workers in the maintenance carts driving around in apparel that was green with the UH name on it. Same with some person that was sweeping.
All of this positive visibility of the school colors and name I saw everywhere perpetuates such a wave of pride that hopefully it spills over onto the athletes, community and maybe perhaps a huge donor. The only disappointment I saw, same as the last time 5-6 years ago at a practice as I recall, is one of the coaches personnel leading calisthenics (yesterday it was it was short sprints, backpedals etc) in a seedy looking tank top thing. And now that looked ghetto imho,…. sorry not everything was perfect.

We still have the “Wahine” to deal with.. “Warrior Wahine”? “Rainbow Wahine”? Just “Wahine”?

Larry Price is Hawaiian and head coached UH Rainbow football decades ago.
Our family’s supported UH athletics since the late ’50s & early ’60s when we played Willamette & other like caliber teams & hardly consider ourselves ‘casual fans.’ I guess it’s been decided/accepted that the fb team’s going to be Warriors, & other men’s teams are ‘Bows…got no problem at all w/ Wahine.
Just trying to work for a unified identity, nothing else. You talk about Trojans, USC comes to mind at once; Huskies: UW or UConn; Bruins: UCLA, etc. UH?
Ultimately, whether or not they do or don’t win a lot of games, we will continue to be more than ‘casual fans’ & support the teams vigorously & financially, but still think we could be more unified in other ways.
We think identity does matter, but that’s only our opinion. You’ve brought up some reasonable points, we respect that.

I totally agree with your perspective, and while many others may also, I’m not certain all would agree on what that ‘unified’ identity should be. I like Rainbow Baseball.. those arches reflect the homers we’d all like to see. Rainbow Basketball.. again those 3 pointers arching from outside the paint zone into the bucket. On the flip side, I like Warrior Football.
So, in the end… maybe being a school with different identities will ‘identify’ and distinguish the University of Hawaii, “… Manoa … Rainbow…. Warrior… Wahine…” teams from all the rest.
I like em all… would have to abstain from voting.

Problem is… I believe men’s volleyball has proven that it can support itself and even add to the bottom line during a winning season. Not many of UH’s sports can claim that. I think having the National Title taken away from deflated the program considerably and it may take a different kind of coaching personality to fire up the crowds again.

Like MIH said, I doubt they would cancel the men’s volleyball program because it is one of the few sports that can actually make money–even now it loses much less than some other sports. The problem is that if they cancel too many sports then UH will lose its D-IA status. Plus, I *love* the conference UH is in and wish they could play some of those Pac-10 teams all of the time!
However, I’ve read rumblings from other schools that are looking at their Athletic Department deficits and their Title IX needs and a few of them might cancel their men’s volleyball program. If that happens, the sport could lose its status with the NCAA and UH wouldn’t have to be the “bad guy” responsible for ending the sport.

If, Cheeleading is now indeed a qualified sport under Title IX, then I should think UH is pretty close in terms of number of athletes of both genders. Where UH might be falling short is in the $$ available/expended for each. If a sport generates a considerably more money, more is naturally spent there. It’s pretty much a rule of thumb in business that you invest in your potential money makers and hope there is left over after expenses to support other programs. But that creates a problem when both genders play the same sport as in Basketball. Some sports probably require more per athlete just to sustain the sport. Doctors, nurses, therapists, coaches, trainers, number of other support staff, PR.. etc.

Schools do *not* need to spend the same amount of money on men’s and women’s sports to satisfy Title IX. You could take a look at SEC schools and how much they spend on their football programs and basketball coaches to see how there is an even greater disparity between the male/female programs there. Title IX counts scholarships, not money spent.
I do not think that cheerleading is a qualified Title IX sport. UH would like to count it, but I do not think that the NCAA does.
Here is a position paper from the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors that is trying to get the NCAA to recognize cheerleading as a Title IX-qualified sport. So, it does NOT count towards that now. This part of the position paper seems to indicate that cheerleading probably will never be considered a sport by the NCAA.
ST has counted cheerleading several times when discussing Title IX. However, the NCAA doesn’t count it and the Office for Civil Rights pretty much has given the final word that backs up the NCAA’s position.

Men’s college volleyball as a whole is on shaky grounds. Even if our program makes money, doesn’t make sense to keep it with no competition. Especially if other schools end up downgrading their programs to club status.
In the end it all may be out of our hands. The NCAA could drop the axe themselves.
That was the reasoning that was told to me from the inside.

Donovan said cutting a sport would be a last resort if the economic picture doesn’t improve. Under questioning by UH President David McClain and board members, Donovan said that men’s swimming and diving, baseball, men’s tennis or men’s volleyball would be leading possibilities.
UH last cut a sport when it dropped women’s track and field in 1985 to add softball. The last men’s sports cuts were track and field and wrestling in 1977.
UH currently has 19 NCAA sports, 11 for women, seven for men and co-ed sailing.
Because of NCAA and Western Athletic Conference requirements, “Only one men’s program (can be cut) and it can’t be football or men’s basketball,” Donovan said.
The NCAA has a formula for a minimum number of sports a school must offer to retain Division I membership, and UH could not have fewer than six to meet it. UH can’t drop a women’s sport until it comes into compliance with Title IX, the federal law on equality in education.
The WAC requires members to field teams in football, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. Baseball and tennis are WAC sports but not required. Men’s volleyball and swimming and diving compete outside the WAC.

Actually it would be nice to add sports instead of talking about cutting them. But with no nearby division I schools those teams would have to live on the mainland during season.
If both Tennis and men’s volley go, women’s wrestling may be introduced.
There’s a local group with interest to bring back men’s wrestling to UH. Not happening without a women’s program first. Even so, no guarantee a men’s program will surface.

I agree that swimming and tennis would be the easiest sports to restart, but stopping and starting sports comes with extra expenses. I don’t see how UH could have a team and have it live on the mainland during the season. How do they attend classes at UH? What kind of revenue are they going to bring in? Travel expenses will really add up also, as you have to pay travel costs for UH basically traveling full-time.

The truth of the matter is, I have no idea. I just stating what was expressed to me what this local group wants to do.

Since you have taught at the college level, what’s your insight on this: with the increase in interactive and internet classes, what is a university going to look like in 25 years? Will undergrads even be on campus? Does the webcam allow you to attend a school on the other side of the world without leaving your home?
If those kinds of changes happen down the road we may not even have college sports.
I have never been to a high school class reunion, which is really sad. My class didn’t have the 5- or 10-year reunions and I think they actually have only held 1 reunion and I was on the mainland and had to miss it. The 15-year reunion was going to be perfectly timed for me because it was held while I was in Hawaii since I was going to Japan with my parents and the tour was leaving from Hawaii the day after the reunion ended. Sadly, they canceled the reunion on the day that the first reunion event was supposed to happen! Some people never got the notice and showed up at the gathering place and were told it was canceled…one of my friends was really upset about that!
I mention this because my older daughter has now attended her second reunion of her preschool class! We had one in the Fall and the Spring reunion was today, with plans to have them every Fall and Spring. The kids are so happy to see each other and play very well with each other, and the parents are all close and like talking story. Lori organizes the reunions and we have had almost 100% turnout each time.
We have this as a potluck and I’m glad to say that the parents bring a LOT of food! Between the sushi, pizza, noodles, chili, fruit, dessert, etc., everyone ate their fill and we had a lot of leftovers…and I *really* ate a Tsaiko-sized portion! We were there for over 3 hours so I had a lot of time to graze…
I can’t believe my 5-year-old has been to 2 class reunions and I haven’t been to any.

I *love* the idea of starting up women’s wrestling at UH! I think that it would be great for the women athletes and would be a nice addition to the sports offered by UH. However, who will they compete against? Travel will be expensive and the schools that offer it (smaller colleges with very small travel budgets) aren’t going to pay their own way to fly to Hawaii.

I agree that things are changing with Universities. Did you know that MIT actually plans to make its lectures and course material available for free over the internet? Stanford lectures are available via streaming video, which allows working people to watch the lectures when they have time after work. Even high schools are experimenting with distance learning–I know that Castle had students take Calculus by watching a televised lecture, but that didn’t work out the year I got a report on it.
I have first-hand experience with distance learning since I took USC graduate classes while I worked for JPL (we watched the lectures at a building at JPL and I actually ended up dating one of the women who watched the lectures with me) and I watched a lot of lectures on tape while I was at Stanford (I took 5 classes that had time conflicts, so I watched 2 live and 3 on tape). My personal experience makes me feel that there is nothing better to being in the lecture hall and being able to ask the instructor questions. Plus, office hours and hands-on labs and exercises are essential parts of the learning process. So, I think you lose something when you have too many classes without an instructor there in person.
Kids today process things differently, so maybe they will like distance learning better. However, for things like Engineering, I don’t see how people can do their labs and get tutoring to properly learn things.

Garret- understood. The local group wanting to start up a wrestling program seems to have access to solid funds to offset costs.
Still, I do know the group prefers to see men’s wrestling resurrected. I’m not sure how long they’d support a women’s program knowing no guarantee of a men’s program would follow.
Even still, I share your interest. It would be cool to see a women’s program start up. We trully do have some really incredible women’s talent from the islands.
I think that the information on SportsHawaii about Ana Tuiasosopo, Jr. might be a little outdated and he might not be getting back from his mission in time for 2010…

Sadly, men’s wrestling might die out on the NCAA level due to budget problems with Athletic Departments. So, if the local group wants to start a women’s program just to get a men’s program in the future, then that might be a problem.
I agree, there would be a LOT of talent for a women’s wrestling program at UH! When you factor in that it would include a *scholarship*, can you imagine how motivated the high school students would be to earn those spots?
It might make them start clawing and grappling with each other trying to gain an advantage! 😯

ST actually provided a lot of the information to us, just not in an easily summarized manner. Many of the recruits I listed above have already been mentioned by ST. Other news has come from other sources–like the Utah papers reported UH’s offer to Rowley when he committed to BYU…but we already knew about the offers to Rowley and Hatchie from this blog.
I think that news on offers to local recruits can come out in a variety of ways–Doris (PIAA), coaches, player’s families, etc. Al, pride, and a lot of others have a lot of little birdies. However, information on mainland recruits is harder to come by, which is exactly the information that ST provided to us.

would have loved to have wade k as a warrior, however HE choose to de-commit. if he changes his mind in the future, i/uh would welcome him with open arms.

I love going to pot luck with people who bring WAY more food than expected! And the kids from Faith’s class really are growing up appreciating reunions and parties…it is great for all of the adults to see. Almost all go to different Elementary Schools, but they will go to the same Intermediate and High schools so hopefully they can keep up the bonds while they are at different schools.
Did I mention that my kids (and Faith’s best friend and her little sister who is in Mika’s preschool class) are all taking a sports class together? They spend several weeks learning a sport–yesterday it was soccer and they had a great time. In a few weeks they will learn how to play FOOTBALL for several weeks, I’m really looking forward to that!

Obviousily Coach Mike wants more production from 5 spots in the BA order. While, vinnie, MCD, Kolt are keeping this team afloat–the other five are more than due and struggling.

So, Roquemore, despite his D skills in the OF, took the day-off. If Josh catches fire, he will be playing daily.
Morford, garcia, Roguemore, Montplaisir and VanDoornum are well below the mendoza line and struggling.

evening tsai-ko country, was supposed to be a slow enjoyable day for me but nooooooooooooooot. started off with one beeg bfast and not the mikey d kine. nice cc with lizk, mei ling, jerry, myki, pride, rob25 and curvball at pagoda. plenty lunch/bfast fuuud stuffs, the omelet station was ono, roast beef end cut was good along with da oddah stuffs. plus ice machine working. whooootahhhhhhhhh.
next stopped off at Murakami stadium to help stretch cheer (yell) at Sac State. even betta when the beeeet um up. 🙁 fell bad for midori cause favorite player hit homie. McDonalds new name is now Burger King because of his two homers. congrads to bballers on win and co leaders in WAC.

Question for you UH baseball junkies – what are the differences between this year’s team and the team that went to the NCAA regional a few years ago. I don’t remember them getting the fan support (ie attendance) back then that they’re getting today. Is it the way team plays, the renovations to the stadium, the lower ticket and fuuud prices or a combination of all the above? Just curious.

what separates this team from that team you refer to is:
one, come from behind wins.
two, long ball. something we have lacked for too long.
three, a very good pitching staff that is deep.
four, a local boy hero on the team.
not too mention jayson kramer whom i have watched since he was 8.

Has he ever been to Wyoming? Those far-away places with strange sounding names have horrible winters with the cold winds coming whipping down the plains.
This year’s bb team also have an incredible untapped potential. They are still not hitting anywhere they should be. They are still developing and perfecting their defense. Yet, they are already winning BIG games. That gives this team a certain swagger that fans like. A raw yet talented team that might get beaten but will in all likelihood bounce back, and bounce back stronger. It’s that ‘Dragon Ball’ phenomena.

It is not precisely the same but in trying to keep my mind from turning into mush, I get a lot of the lectures that The Teaching Company produces. If you are not familiar with the company, you can Google it. The lectures on a particular subject usually are 24-36 lectures of about 30 minutes each ranging from pre-history, science, literature, music etc.
“distance learning” is that similar to the situation between my ex-wife and me? After seven years, we learned to keep a good distance between us. She’s in Japan and I’m in Hawaii. 😉

I cant or wont speak for the 2006 team that went 45-17 and had a venerable local boy on its roster named Matt Inouye.
That team hit .297.
They had there own mantra.
I will say this about our 2009 team–it is defined by Coach Mike.
Perhaps, the much maligned HC is in his finest and most defining season.
He has done an incredible job in bringing along his young pitchers.
He recruited his pitchers well too–Matt Sisto, Jesse Moore, Lenny Linsky and Conner Little are frosh that have contributed.
Josh Slaats, Sam Spangler and Alex Capaul are sophs, who are solid.
Im especially impressed with his gut in keeping Jared Alexander in the mix, when most coaches would delegated him to a desolate section of the bullpen.
We saw his patience pay-off today as Alexander mixed his pitches well, stayed ahead in the count and it breaking 12-6.
Next, the character of this team is clutch.
To be sure, this 2009 team is not a come-from-behind bunch. They have only scored 9 runs in the 9th awhile our opponents have doubled that total.
But what they do, is score in the clutch.
That has to scream out a sense of resilience, tenacity and short memory.
This team is hitting a pathetic .261, the worst in the WAC.
They have 5 starters hitting below .250 and only two hitting above .300.
There are five WAC teams hitting better as a team than our entire roster, save young kolt and my cuz vinnie.
So what is it?
Chemistry and an odd combination of seniors and youth.
We shall see what happens at Las Cruces this week.
By now, we all know the aggies are contenders not pretenders.
On the road they went 4-4 against Fresno and Nev.
eh, dont try to figure the who-doo-vodoo, but what u can do–is bring da cigar, rum and chiken blud.
Jobu is around, you can bet on it and Pedro is a member of this 2009 team…bank on it!

“Warrior Bowl” Schedule
1:00 p.m. Stadium Gate Opens (Gate 4 only)
1:00-2:30 p.m. Autograph & Photo Session (south concourse)
3:00 p.m. Scrimmage (fan seating on Makai side)
Last year the autograph session was at 5-630 PM. Game was later, and I’m thinking around 7 p.m.
This year it conflicts with the swap meet. Not too bright thinking by someone IMO. IDK if finding parking is an issue, but the times I’ve gone to the swap meets on a Saturday parking wasn’t easy to come by. Now, can you imagine merging the swap meet people and the ones attending the scrimmage and how there might be a shortage of parking spaces. But the biggest detriment and damage is that the knowledge that fans knowing in advance that the swap meet is taking place the same time as the gates open for the scrimmage, and that will probably deter those people from showing up all together, knowing that it’ll probably be too chaotic out at the stadium, especially with the presence of the swap meet.
One logical explanation for this earlier time would be appreciated.
Another reason is the lack of media attention (so far) compared to last year.
Remembering correctly last year I heard numerous times commercials on the radio, 1420, building up the game. So far this year, not to much.
