Lakers won’t train here in fall

Here’s another drawback to the delayed announcement of the WAC football schedule, which was released last week: the Los Angeles Lakers won’t have training camp in Hawai‘i this fall.
The Lakers needed to know the available dates to hold training camp and exhibition games here. But they couldn’t get a window in time because they had  to wait for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team to learn its schedule, and that was on hold while the  WAC football schedule was being crafted.
The Lakers now will train in California. There is a possibility they might train in Hawai‘i in 2010.

* * *

• Shane Austin continues to impress, and it would not be surprising if he exits spring training as at least the co-No. 2 quarterback.
• Inoke Funaki also had his most productive day as a running back. Funaki, who has never clocked faster than 4.6 seconds in the 40, is showing good burst to the outside. Leon Wright-Jackson also is having a good spring.
• Wideout Billy Ray Stutzmann showed quickness on a slant route today. His best play was when he made a tackle on an interception return.
• Lewis Walker was the No. 1 right cornerback, filling in for Jeramy Bryant, who had to take a test.

* * *

Here’s quarterback coach Nick Rolovich’s ring tone:

Give me back that fillet o’ fish, give me that fish /
Give me back that fillet o’ fish, give me that fish /
What if it were you hanging up on this wall /
if it were you in that sandwich /
you wouldn’t be laughing at all!

did the WAC hire Herman Frazier as their director of scheduling?

  3. bighilofan2 April 9, 2009 1:23 am

too bad for our State. Like WAC is doing us a favor all the time?
Good thing we got Gordy And Chris and Mike on board. at least they’re good news, and in the nick of time.

so what about GA and the quick release? can he do it? hopinf ao.

    Top 10!

    Yay.

  9. wafan April 9, 2009 4:09 am

Let us see if I got this right.

Boise wants to leave the WAC.

Hawai’i is the oldest continuing member of the WAC.

    hf screwed Hawai’i.

    Benson came to hf’s rescue.

    Benson graduated from Boise.

    The WAC screwed Hawai’i . . . again.

    See? It all makes sense!

  10. mctruck April 9, 2009 4:15 am

Well, atleast another of HF’s boy’s is out…..bye Bolla!!!

  11. NYUH April 9, 2009 4:55 am

I used to do the video for some of the Lakers’ practices in Klum Gym. Worthy, Vlady, Magic Johnson. Knick fan though.

I think LWJ is one of the most popular Warriors. Hope he can transcend the curse of potential this year.

  12. whitey April 9, 2009 5:44 am

good morning tsaikos. great evening with the quackers and as in the past came home with more framed waterfowl prints.

  13. whitey April 9, 2009 5:47 am

somewhere along in the future, it will be necessary for the uh president to urge the wac commissioner that the fb schedule for the year should be done by feb 1st. if he cannot comply, then he should resign.

  14. whitey April 9, 2009 5:49 am

wafan, is more winter weather on the forecast???

  15. whitey April 9, 2009 5:51 am

bighilof2, let me know if you need a ride for this weekend. are you staying at maui beach or seaside? most of the tsaikos attedning the scrimmage will be at maui beach. we got some things planned, so want to make sure you are there.

  16. roysan16 April 9, 2009 5:53 am

    Good Morning

Way to go UH. Clean up crew comes in takes care of the mess. And we move on. And this is the way it should be…and hopefully in the right direction. First HF, and now JB. When the big one departs, and the sooner the better, that in itself will complete the clean up. And that day arriving will be a coveted day, indeed, when we see DM leave. For IMO, UH will be in a better hands with somebody else. We’re already seeing that happen with HF replacement with JD doing a much better job…and likely with JB’s successor …so the next one would be DM’s, which I’m thinking we can’t be any worse off with whomever we hire as the next UH president–and I know that doesn’t speaks well of him, but he’s one that get’s my ire more so than HB and JB combined.

  17. whitey April 9, 2009 5:56 am

for our maui tsaikos, breakfast sat morning will be at Tasty Crust in Wailuku. time is 8:30 am. we will be using the room on the right when you enter the restaurant. there is another group in there, but they are scheduled to leave before that.

after the game, we are planning to go to Tiffany’s in Wailuku. it is on lower beach road.

hope to see our maui tsaikos on sat.

  18. whitey April 9, 2009 5:57 am

    good morning roysan16

  19. whitey April 9, 2009 5:58 am

roysan, do you live in the waimanalo area??

  20. jm2375 April 9, 2009 6:16 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

roysan – DM is still way better than his predecessor, ED. At least DM hired Chancellor Hinshaw.

  21. wafan April 9, 2009 6:17 am

    whitey . . .

Thank goodness, no! We are now in for the typical Spring weather. Cool with high clouds and some rain. The apple and cherry blossoms are beautiful!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TcLdJlA0Nc

It has been about five years since I was last on Maui. The Maui Beach and the Seaside are next to each other. Is that right? Beach on the left; Seaside on the right.

  22. whitey April 9, 2009 6:29 am

wafan, yes the 2 hotels are still there, except the cost went up like everything else. hard to believe, but at one time not long ago, room was under $15. hoo boy, getting old!!!!!

the blossoms must be fantastic. got to see the cherry blossoms in Japan back in the 80’s and they sure know how to celebrate. put a goza on the grass, turn on your radio, sip a few hot sake or cold brew, and enjoy the view. yeeeessssshhhh.

  23. wafan April 9, 2009 6:36 am

    whitey . . .

Do they still have the Maui Select Band Camp and performances? I used to work with the kids and Mr. E. Matsushita back in the ’70’s.

  24. Stephen Tsai April 9, 2009 6:42 am

The WAC’s schedule is mostly delayed because of ESPN.
ESPN decides which games and matchups it wants.
Then the WAC has to fill in the pukas. That’s not an easy thing.
But the importance of exposure — ESPN’s coverage for recruiting and credibility — means having to wait. Sometimes the collateral damage is something like the Lakers’ camp.

  25. bighilofan2 April 9, 2009 6:44 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    whitey,

    ahem ahem….

looking forward to this weekend. gotta make plans today. will let you know. i’ll get your cel from your sis.

envy you guyz watching the practices. i get mine this Sat.

btw, great idea whitey about our Pres and the WAC Commish. I do not know why the WAC gotta keep having the stereotype of last minute Charlie, like slow slow slow…. s…llll….oooooo….wwwwwww. 😀

  26. whitey April 9, 2009 6:45 am

holy mackeral!!! you know the “blind man”!! i don’t think they have that program anymore as ed in now retired along with many of the old band instructors. he is now into wood carving and making wood items. i don’t think he goes tako diving too often and that is where he got his name from because he could not see the tako. his daughter is a teacher at the local hs and teaches japanese.

  27. whitey April 9, 2009 6:47 am

    bhf2, sounds good.

  28. djmitcho April 9, 2009 6:54 am

Good Morning everybody! One more day closer da weekend.

    Whitey,
My dad is a member of DU and lives on Lana’i, so I’m wondering if you know him

  29. bighilofan2 April 9, 2009 6:57 am

    ST,

i do NOT understand that …. like, if WAC sets the schedule, and ESPN wants to move a game usually set for a Sat eve/day or a Fri eve/day, to say a Wed., why gotta hold up the rest of the show? In this day and age, gotta get the slo pokes on the job. The Commish gotta speak up for all us. ESPN always get the clout to move things to make/break us its sad dat year after year we gotta wait till late March to find out dat Fall WAC seaspm starts late Sept and ends in November.

    Jason,
    you do the math. 😀

    btw,
how much $$ ESPN giving us to hold things up? I might change my mind if we’re talking

  30. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER April 9, 2009 7:01 am

Not a Good Morning Tsaiko’s! I overslept this AM…missed going to fb practice! I feel bad ’cause Pops was all dressed and ready to go. Reselrazelfrats! Now I’ve given a certain celebratty Tsaiko reason to talk stink about me all day today.

Note to UKU: Enjoy da Warriors practice, safe journey to big island and beyond. See you in Vegas!

  37. djmitcho April 9, 2009 7:25 am

    whitey,
if you hunt on Lanai, you would have definitely known my uncle Kazu, he was game warden for a long time. he passed last fall.

  38. Kekoa April 9, 2009 7:32 am

BHF2 ~ Are you going to Maui without your body guard? The darkside tour in Whitey’s ride is for mature audiences only. Bring a note from Susan.

  39. whitey April 9, 2009 7:36 am

djmitcho, another holy mackeral!!!! i knew your uncle personally and he is the one that showed me what the hale was all about. you not going believe this, but his relative, d and b kato, have a house across the street from me. the old military jeep that he had used to belong to one of my breakfast gang. amazing how small the world is!!!!!! got to go.

  40. jojo ® April 9, 2009 7:44 am

wafan, what a funny way to summarize it. But with ST’s explanation, it’s weird to think that it was the television’s screw up. Does that mean that TV is bad for you?

  41. Kekoa April 9, 2009 7:49 am

jojo ~ Too much TV gives you wrinkles around your eyes from squinting at all the reality shows like Da Braddahs!

  42. madeinhawaii April 9, 2009 7:55 am

  49. PowderPuff April 9, 2009 8:17 am

Good morning, Tsaikos! The Lakers not coming for training camp is a huge bummer, especially for a particular hotel. That’s okay…our Warriors will make us forget about the purple and gold this fall.

  50. addahknowjoe April 9, 2009 8:19 am

    Kekoa- Uhhh… no wuz me.

I just thought: didn’t everyone’s mom seem to be within arms reach of an orange Hot Wheels Track?

Or at least one guava stick.

    Aowee!

PowderPuff You ready fo represent this weekend? =)

You make me feel so old!

I remember playing with Tom Okino, Mustard, those guys on the front of the Lanai Inn and they taught me how to play piute!

mr. c like say you guy doing supa job keep the freeway safe. mahalo my bruddah

  55. Kekoa April 9, 2009 8:27 am

A-Joe ~ KK is soaking his head right now as he prepares to make a late appearance at his appointed place of employment. Reports of he and several assistants sampling drinking establishments in the Nu’uanu area have been confirmed.

As you know he is a certified EIS inspector and it is his duty to pull these unannounced inspections at these establishments from time to time. Kinda gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling all over, huh?!

  56. PowderPuff April 9, 2009 8:29 am

    A-Joe, YES! I ready…is it Saturday, yet?

  57. Stretch April 9, 2009 8:30 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

You guys talking about Saturday already?? Geez, we need to take one day at a time.

Here’s a link for Masters viewing on line.

    http://www.channelsurfing.net/

The above link shows a menu of NCAA baseball games, hopefully they’ll show the UH-Nevada series (keep an eye out for)

whitey, no, not from waimanalo. presently living in Kaneohe, but grew up in Kailua. My not so fondest memory of Waimanalo, though, was the time I was casually snorkeling out by Waimanalo Beach and I swam into a huge turtle that scared the living daylights out of me. Except from that one encounter with the turtle, I have but nothing but nice memories of Waimanalo….. reminiscing, I feel a deep sense of serenity looking up at the closeness of the koolaus and the surrounding ocean in Waimanalo– unlike anywhere else in the islands.

  61. addahknowjoe April 9, 2009 8:44 am

Good point Mr C. Get choke courts to choose from.

Kekoa I told James from now on if anyone asks how you today, jus say, “Ho- not good. I feelin’ all KK today.” (While saying that make the shaka sign, put your thumb by your lips and tilt your hand up couple times. Can close your eyes and raise your eye brows too if you like for da full effect)

  62. madeinhawaii April 9, 2009 8:52 am

    addahknowjoe,

For the full effect, in addition to the above you gotta try sign your name in the air with your butt at the same time.

  63. addahknowjoe April 9, 2009 9:03 am

MIH I think that’s what Bolla tried to do and ended up kicking his player. Think he ran into trouble while trying to sign that second L.

Double butt loops are tuff to sign if you don’t have the proper stance to begin with.

  64. Kazz April 9, 2009 9:22 am

Prayers to the teammates, friends, and family of Nick Adenhart, rookie pitcher for the Angels.

Proof positive that life can be unjust at times. Once my brother and mother were struck by someone that also ran a red light and had a suspended license. Luckily for our family nothing really came out of it other than a few hours in the hospital and the loss of a cherry 1982 mustang, but this kid Nick Adenhart was just a passenger, just started his 4th MLB game last night, and fell victim to some punk driving with a suspended license for a prior DUI.

    This is lame.

  65. SteveM April 9, 2009 9:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

Going to the 2009 LaTech, Idaho, Reno, or SJSU games this year? The Tsai-ko plans & logistics page for these road games is posted at…

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/away09.html

Please post here or email if you plan to attend any of these games. Names & number at this stage so everyone can see who else is going. Later, more details such as hotel, ETA, etc. as it develops so the attendees can plan cattle call/tailgate location and time.

Looks like the San Jose game (Nov. 21) is going to be the 2nd largest road gathering this year.

  66. MeiLing April 9, 2009 9:29 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Kekoa,

I overslept, too, but it was from drinking kope last night keeping me up till 2:30 am. I had good intentions of getting to practice, since I’m not getting to Maui. Dang! Hi to Pops & Diana!

  67. wafan April 9, 2009 9:32 am

    whitey . . .

Yep. That is the guy! What an incredible teacher. I really tried to model my instructional techniques on his style of mixing the humor with high expectations. Sounds like you know the old directors well. Is Clyde still teaching?

  68. wafan April 9, 2009 9:33 am

    Liz . . .

Never smelled coffee blossoms. I like the smell of fresh coffee grounds, though. Opening the brand new #10 can and taking a hit of the aroma was one of my favorite things. I know, weird.

  69. wafan April 9, 2009 9:34 am

I watch the news. I guess that is bad for anyone.

  71. wafan April 9, 2009 9:37 am

Sad about the Angles’ pitcher. Prayers to his family. That fool that ran the light needs a lot of help, too. He will have to live with what he did to destroy the lives of so many.

  72. wafan April 9, 2009 9:45 am

UW’s Spring practices are open to the public. Sadly, not many, if any, are there watching. Well, except for Mike Holmgren.

  73. Mauiboy April 9, 2009 9:49 am

Damn, Mr Matsushita was my band teacher at Lihikai School.
I went to one of those band camps at Camp Maluhia.

  74. wafan April 9, 2009 9:51 am

The M’s and their brand new skipper (Wakamatsu) are 2-2. The guys are really playing hard for him. Wakamatsu is pretty low-key but appears to be able to motivate.

  75. who da guy April 9, 2009 9:55 am

GOOD!!!! The fakers should stay in LA.

  76. las vegas April 9, 2009 10:02 am

Help Wanted – UH Basketball Head Coach (Women)

Posted on the UH website yesterday, posting closes on April 24th:

    http://www.pers.hawaii.edu/wuh/nadvert.aspx?rn=8380

Advertiser article quoted Alika Smith saying that he was going to apply, but I don’t think he has the minimum 5 years experience coaching at the college or university level.

    Any applicants here?

  80. Mr Colomaohana April 9, 2009 10:31 am

    Howzit up in the northwest?
    Anything new or good?

  81. Kekoa April 9, 2009 10:41 am

LV ~ Feeling like it’s time to scratch that ‘itch’ and make a quick visit to glitter town. Closed a profitable position in Soybeans even as the trend is still to the upside!…(gotta leave sumting fo’ bait)…Should be ready to close the door on Jun T-Bonds soon, for a little more spending money.

I figure after the Easter Bunny leaves town, they’ll be some loose machines on the casino floor. Time to sweep those coins out…or am I jez dreaming?

  82. (Jesse)James April 9, 2009 11:12 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…busy day…have to esme…be back later though…

A-Joe…yeah, tried using that a couple times this week…only thing is, nobody in my office knows what KK means….LMAO

He’s just gotta watch what he says or how he says things. In the Advertiser article, he was quoted as saying “Even if its the women’s team[.]” It can be taken the wrong way.

Anyone go to fb practice today? How was it? Did they practice the 2-minute drill where Malcolm Lane catches the winning touchdown? Anyone? Bueller?

  90. Committed Road Warrior April 9, 2009 12:43 pm

    WAY OFF-TOPIC

Some of you might feel differently, but as one of the 8,000+ in Arizona State’s graduating class next month, I was enraged when I read this article in the local paper. So much for ethics:

With rights to six tickets and no desire to see President Barack Obama address Arizona State University’s commencement, Mike Rogers’ business schooling kicked in: He posted his tickets on Craigslist and planned to sell them to the highest bidder.

He isn’t the only graduate trying to sell or trade tickets to the May 13 ceremony. Craigslist and eBay have an assortment of ads offering tickets for up to $200 or as low as a 30-pack of beer apiece.

That’s drawn the ire of university officials, who say selling the tickets violates the school’s code of conduct. In responses to the ads, they’re threatening to revoke sellers’ tickets and subject them to administrative penalties.

“It sort of cheapens the dignity of the event to sell tickets,” said Sharon Keeler, an ASU spokeswoman.

According to school policy, tickets to event can’t be sold, traded, bartered, assigned or transferred in any way.

No one has tickets yet; they’ll be distributed later this month. Graduating students can request up to six, including one for themselves, by submitting names to the university.

If anything, I’m probably not even going to go to see the President’s commencement speech because:

    1. I still gotta go to work that night.
    2. I don’t want to deal with the traffic, parking, and security search hassles, and odds are they’ll probably shut down the area’s light-rail system during that time since it runs right next to the commencement site.

  102. homey ℞ April 9, 2009 1:27 pm

Kekoa – I was? Well if I was then I’d tell you that the o-line tackles did some good run blocking today. Pass protection was good in spots but needs to be more consistent. Correa was a beast in the trenches. The secondary had many bright moments. Stutzmann is the real deal. Avery ate some rubber pellets. Pilares and Salas in the slot is a deadly combination. Considering the weather elements, the QB’s did okay. There were a few picks and deflected passes. LWJ looks good. The field definitely makes a big difference because the Warriors can practice at game speed.

That’s what I would say if I went to practice today.

  106. Kekoa April 9, 2009 2:05 pm

Homey ~ Tell ‘Mo’ to look out for curveball…he wants to petition coach Mack for Bryant to become the #2 QB

  107. homey ℞ April 9, 2009 2:12 pm

Hopefully I get to talk to Mo at the 4/25 post game. Haven’t seen that buggah in years.

    wafan,

One of the conditions of requesting commencement tickets is that they NOT be sold, traded, bartered, etc. It is explicitly stated right there (when you put in your request)!

The University wants to impose administrative penalties on the sellers, but it’s gonna be hard for them to track down some of them, especially with the anonymity of the Internet impeding the school’s efforts. I bet the school would prefer to withhold their diplomas, but that’s not gonna happen unless they like end up in court.

Sadly, I agree with your last sentence.

with a 4 game series using 6 pitchers putting some heavy pressure on the remaining throwers to go at least nine. just hope the bats continue to bang out the hits and come up with 5 or more runs each per next 3 games.

  193. Garret April 9, 2009 7:47 pm

Too bad about the baseball game, especially with using so many pitchers with 3 games to go. However, I’m guessing that Nevada’s staff is also pretty used up, so pitching depth will be crucial if the starters cannot go long each game.

  194. Garret April 9, 2009 7:50 pm

It would be impressive if Shane Austin exits the spring as the #2 QB, especially considering how high Rausch was on the depth chart at one point last Fall camp. On the flip side, this would indicate that Rausch hasn’t progressed like the coaches had been hoping, which would really be too bad.

I don’t think you can say a player is a sleeper if they’re selected in the second or third round, but a player I really like is Hawaii DE David Veikune. He plays with a high motor and possesses elite athleticism and strength

  198. Garret April 9, 2009 7:58 pm

This article mentions Veikune as a potential draft pick for the Cowboys.

How is this for life’s travel log? David Veikune, considered a 3-4 outside linebacker, was born in Alaska, spent four years in New Mexico and then went to high school in Hawaii. He was red-shirt at Colorado, transferred to Fresno (Calif.) City College and ended up playing the remainder of his college career back in Hawaii. Can Texas be far off?

So, getting rid of their print copy of the newspaper and forcing their subscribers to read the paper online resulted in *less* people reading the newspaper online!

RE our QBs….dont bother–it’s all about our system until we get another Colt. So, look at Coach Ron and Gordie.
If they can create their system, everything should follow…. than look at our record.
I dont want to hear about this hero n dat hero—i just know 6-2 with our WAC schedule is solid given our talent and tough road games against Nevada, SJSU and LaT.

In OC, we should beat Central Arkansas, UNLV and a very good travel team in Navy. Dont forget, Vegas is prolly a home game for Hawaii.
That means, 8-5 is good and live to play another season and another Hawaii Bowl.
Of course this also falls on Tormey and MAC on D–we will face tough running teams and our safety play has to improve, especially against Navy’s spread run option.
If you think Boise State’s OL is disciplined wait till you see Navy’s OL–pound for pound, the best OL in D1A football.

To Coach Miano I had wished I had forwarded these questions concerning David Veikune’s play when he was here for the video chat.

First I agree with everyone’s observation saying DV has a good motor. However, I agree with the Sporting News evaluation saying DV doesn’t have elite athleticism, although other scouting services says he does. I don’t see him as in the same caliber as a Travis Laboy, who I would describe as the most instinctive defensive player I’ve seen, with a nose for the football, and who aptly possesses elite type athleticism more so than DV.

What I see DV doing wrong this past year, and I think it really handicaps his play (IMO) is that he comes out of his stance too high. His initial charge should be lower. By quickly coming up out of his stance too high he gives away too much leverage to the OL.
This is a really noticeable flaw, which surprises me that his position coach didn’t correct. Or pick up on this.

So my question to Coach Miano would have been-Do you think DV was devoid of good coaching from his position coach this past year? Looking at the game film this past season does DV technique need working on, especially how comes out of his stance too high on his initial charge? Does he hesitate too much instead of reacting to the ball?

In conclusion, I’m not disputing that DV is a talented player. Or that he might not go in the earlier rounds of the upcoming NFL draft.. What I am disputing is that if his position coach or any coach had worked closely on his technique of coming off the ball lower, instead, at times, too high, and with too much hesitation–he would have been helluva a lot better player IMO.

Travis is athletic, no doubt, but is known as a cowboy.
DV can play assignment football and do it well.
It just depends on the system and whether it fits.

roysan16- in spite of being an admitted newbie to all of this high school-college-pro football transition/translation, what I have observed is that everything DEPENDS on the chemistry of the player and the team.

My main man from Kauai – whom we watched intently in high school- Jordon- had a great matchup in college and was able to overcome a LOT of social adjustments to play well. High draft put him in a do or die situation with his struggling pro team. He did not have the luxury of time to learn the complicated NFL playbook and seems to be having his own struggles there.

Colt – lessons learned early- got JJ and crew and learned how to BELIEVE. Heck, we ALL BELIEVE and some of us STILL BELIEVE that Colt has the MOJO that can help his NFL team. The team (owners, coaches, whatever) has given him LOTS of time to learn the playbook. Too much time, in some opinions. People want to see him PLAY.

Flacco- got put into an NFL system that let him learn as he went and did not ask too much of him his rookie year- but gave him the playing time. I like that moderate approach and it seems to be working.

So it may be with our Warriors. And with Veikune in the NFL. I am praying that ALL of our guys get a CHANCE to SHINE- in systems that are suited to them.

As for this season- I am not waiting for the second coming of Colt. What we get will not be a JJ team, it will be a GM team. The role of the QB is different. From my perch very far away, the vibe I get is that our Warriors could be a better BALANCED team than a JJ team.

I’m looking forward to this season!

  219. Jason April 9, 2009 9:40 pm

roysan16: I think Aranda is a heck of a coach. And I think Veikune is a guy who responds to coaching. But at the same time, it’s hard for 18-22 year olds to be perfectly disciplined. Especially when you are a good athlete, you take advantage of your abilities. As Veikune gets older and wiser, I think you’ll see that cleaned up. I mean, it’s that way for all of us in life, isn’t it?

(And yeah, I don’t think Veikune is an “elite” athlete too. But he’s a good athlete; that’s why I have him as a 3rd round grade. I actually like him more as a DE than a hybrid. But not sure if that frame of his can bulk up to 275-280.)

curveball: From what I saw last year, Austin’s okay. Good live arm, just like Rausch and Alexander. All three need to clean up some things mechanically. It’s all knowledge of the offense now. I’d like to see those three battle it out. They all bring something good to the table. This is the kind of problem I like to have. 🙂

I think it’s been too long a day for me. My sentences are starting to lack a certain rhythm. They are all carbon copies of each other structurally. I can see Mike cringing as he reads this. 😛

warriorfanny2, you really think Colt is in the wrong system? I thought the WCO was something he could do. I am not convinced that the team setup we saw last year was Zorn’s true vision. It seemed more like an attempt to modify the system around a few odd players.

The San Francisco Examiner thinks that Oakland will win their division, but they wonder about the trade with Miami for Samson.

The one puzzling move was the trade for third-year Miami Dolphins center Samson Satele.

The Raiders had let Jake Grove go, which was sensible; Grove is a stiff. Then, the Dolphins signed Grove and traded Satele to the Raiders, who gave up a fifth-round draft choice. Giving up a young player to sign an overpriced veteran seems strange, especially with Bill Parcells in charge in Miami. We’ll see.

Another feature on Jim Mills getting to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. I didn’t realize he was on the Doug Flutie-led team in 1991.

“Making the Grey Cup in 1988 was great but it sure was a letdown losing a game we should have won. I’d have to say my best memory would be the ’91 season with Flutie as our quarterback. We were getting over 40,000 in the dome and I think we had seven games that went to overtime.”

Mills collected three CFL All-Star honours (1988, 1990, 1991) and was named a Western All-Star five times (1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993) over nine seasons in Black and Orange. The Vancouver native also received the nod as the league’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in two consecutive seasons (1990, 1991).

He played tight end for the Richmond Colts and shifted to lineman at the University of Hawaii where he earned a full-ride scholarship.

    Liz,

Sadly, I made a deposit in my last gambling run. I’m still ahead for the trip, but that was the first time I actually lost money on a table this whole trip! It was also the first time I spent less than 90 minutes on a table…

This whole trip my bad luck has been smokers. Every time I was on a roll and someone lit up at my table (normally the person right next to me) I would immediately start to lose. So, not only was it unpleasant to have the smoke right near me, I would get bad luck too! It happened again on my last gambling run, but this time I wasn’t ahead enough to quit ahead after my luck changed.

This report is pretty negative for those people who hope that an anti-trust lawsuit could topple the BCS.

Utah attorney general Mark Shurtleff might have made the most progress this year. He expects to file an anti-trust lawsuit against the BCS as soon as June. Don’t hold your breath, playoff lovers. Rhodes has read the reports. If — and it’s a big if — the case ever came to trial, he says it could last as long as five years.

“At least three years and probably five years,” Rhodes explained.

Five years? We’re more likely to have some kind of playoff in that time span than a fully litigated court case.

If a trial started today, in five years it would end in the spring of 2014. The next BCS contract runs through the 2013 season (January 2014 bowls).

For now, all the legal wrangling seems like a lot of bluster. Maybe that’s why the BCS has been so quiet. Aside from a couple of statements by BCS coordinator John Swofford, there has been little reaction from the game’s power brokers.

Maybe it’s because they are confident in their own legal standing. In addition to using a powerful law firm, the BCS’ presidential oversight committee has some legal clout of its own. Oregon president Dave Frohnmayer is the state’s former attorney general.

“It’s not like we’re without legal expertise,” Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said.

Rhodes is neutral, not affiliated with either side. He is merely intrigued about a possible legal clash.

“I do have some perspective on it,” Rhodes said. “Basically what you’re watching is a three-round bout with the Utah attorney general. The first round of anti-trust is press releases and political grandstanding and people with spears hopping up and down. The second round is the trial court and third round is the court of appeals.

“Whoever’s left standing at the end of the third round wins. It would be unusual for the attorney general to be standing at the end of the third round.”

Garret- the other night at Rotary, I heard a great comment by an attorney. He said something that I understood like this: the best deals are made when interested stakeholders hash it out and come to a satisfied handshake. Then let the lawyers in to work out the details supporting the agreement.
If you let the lawyers do the deal, no deal will be made because they are always looking for liabilities.

Maybe the BCS will experience something over the next few years that will inspire them to come to the table and do what’s best for all, not just themselves.
    Who knows?

And good luck on a smokeless investment of time next time! 😉

    Garret . . .

About a week ago on the Discovery Channel, I think, there was a program about a guy in Hawai’i listening to the sounds produced by the magma moving underground. He was connected with the UH.

Anyhow, his theory was that as the gases were compressed by the moving magma it would produce these sounds at very low frequencies. On several of his ‘scopes the wave lengths were so long that it was almost unnoticeable. But, as he compresed the waves and sped up the payback the waves and sounds were very obvious.

I wonder if this program and the UH guy are connected with the research being done by those in your article?

Dan Hawkins is closing practices because he says that too much information is getting out from blogs, message boards and the regular media.

Coach Dan Hawkins decided to close practices to the public beginning with Thursday’s session because he said too much detailed information about schemes, players’ roles and injuries was being published in blogs, on message boards and in the mainstream media through the first 10 days of practice.

“I’d love to have fans come,” he said. “It’s great. We want fans to come. We want fans to be a part of it and all that, but I don’t think we should be scouted in the spring. I’m the kind of guy who is a trusting guy. Unfortunately that trust doesn’t always go very far.”

“You’ve got an ambulance coming for a player,” Plati said. “Do his parents know an ambulance is coming for him, or is somebody going to Twitter it out there and his parents find out that way? That’s why it should be released through us,” he said.
