Had a nice chat with Vorster

Sweet young woman

Said she hoped everyone knew that she was leaving because she was graduating and wanted to move on academically. Said she guessed she had always been more of a student than and athlete and the move will give her a chance to be closer to family and play with her sister, whom she considers her best friend.

Said she hopes to play 2 years and finsh her Master’s in public health around the same time her eligibility is up. The program is 3-4 semesters.

She was excited about playing with her sister. They had played one year in high school and said it had always been a dream for them to do it, that it was going to be so much fun and was happy it worked out.

told her someone had suggested Shoji schedule Liberty for 2015. She said that would be crazy.

She appreciates all the kind words on the blog and all the kindness shown during her time at Hawaii, which she loves.

I really appreciate that Jade enjoyed her time at Hawaii and wish her the best of luck. I think I might become a Liberty fan now.

  2. formerlywarriorfan March 20, 2014 12:36 pm

    She will be missed.
What Conference does Liberty play in? It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Jade becomes the top middle blocker there.

  3. Kazu March 20, 2014 12:43 pm

I guess that’s another team to follow, like i follow Arizona with Croson there. Alway nice to see former Wahine play no matter who they play for.

  4. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 12:45 pm

2 mentioned on previous thread it is the Big South

  5. Brandon. March 20, 2014 12:51 pm

Jade is so humble and kind. She appreciates the te she had at hawaii so much and her attitude is just amazing. Seeing her light up on points made matches fun. She will be greatly missed. Hope she has a great two years at liberty 🙂

  6. formerlywarriorfan March 20, 2014 1:09 pm

.4 thanks just looked it up, Liberty finished 4th in that conference last season, adding a player of Jade’s calibre (plus her sister Sirena), might catapult them to the top. We might be seeing them in the NCAA tourney next season.

  7. Setaone March 20, 2014 1:19 pm

The Hawaii Nebraska scores are ridiculous. Goes to show the difference in programs that are using sand only players vs programs that are using only indoor players.

  8. vballfreak808 March 20, 2014 1:19 pm

    Set One Scores Against Nebraska
    1. Tiegs/Cook win 21-7
    2. Spieler/Taylor win 21-7
    3. Longo/Long win 21-13
    4. Riggs/Rooks win 21-4

  9. Brandon. March 20, 2014 1:21 pm

Oh my lord this is a slaughter. Tbh I never thought that sand an indoor play would be so different. I assumed an AA indoor player would be great on sand still. But by the looks of these, I guess I was wrong.

  10. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 1:21 pm

Thank you for the info. I am not at the beach today.
it does … but remember that UH has a mixed team of sand only and indoor
UH one of the few that fully fund the sport with 5 scholarships, 6 cap next year.
Stanford has 0, Long Beach 1, SC not giving 5 yet,

  11. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 1:22 pm

    9. but Nebraska also played earlier in the day, following a flight in yesterday.
this is UH’s only match of the day

  12. Brandon. March 20, 2014 1:24 pm

    11. Ahh I see thanks! One question, what’s the scholorship rule for sand and indoor?

  13. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 1:26 pm

currently, indoor scholarship player can walk onto sand, Sand scholarship can’t go to indoor.
If you aren’t on scholarship in either, you could play both.
also, scholarships in sand can be divided up, say give 10 players half of one. indoor vb cannot be divvied up. Men with 4.5 can be divided.

  14. Brandon. March 20, 2014 1:29 pm

Ahh I see. So basically the only way kendra koelsch can play indoor next year is if shoji offers a scholarship. Well I hope he does because she would make a GREAT addition to the wahine

  15. formerlywarriorfan March 20, 2014 1:38 pm

    re .9

I am not surprised. Scott is doing a great job, after many questioned him last season, he is showing that he is a pretty great beach volleyball head coach. And UH should be even better next season.

  16. formerlywarriorfan March 20, 2014 1:39 pm

re. 14 I read something about Kendra being a walk on , so she could play both as a walk on, like Sarah Mendoza.

  17. WhyWhat March 20, 2014 1:40 pm

Are there future plans to have SV televised?

  18. Brandon. March 20, 2014 1:46 pm

Oh Scott’s doing an amazing job. But since I never followed sand till this year, I always thought a great indoor player would be great on sand. But I guess the sand game is that much different. Because to be fair, nebraska indoor would beat hawaii indoor. (This past year). But it goes to show hawaii has amazing players and amazing coaches

  19. islandman March 20, 2014 1:50 pm

So will there be a transfer in ? Was Dave’s anticipated news only about Jade transferring out ?

  20. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 1:54 pm

    19. YES, there is a transfer in. go back through earlier threads
    17. YES, but you’re have to talk to TV about it
    18. You can go to UH’s website and read the archived stories from the previous two seasons if you want to catchup.

  21. Brandon. March 20, 2014 1:55 pm

I think it’s crazy how nebraska was ranked 8, and they played Zero matches. They should be dropping out of the polls after this.

  22. Brandon. March 20, 2014 1:58 pm

    Hawaii sweeps nebraska
Long/Longo take second set 21-15 against Nebraska
Cook/Tiegs take second set 21-17 against Nebraska
Rooks/Riggs take second set 21-18 against Nebraska
    Chow/Higgins take set 2 against Nebraska 21-17
    Spieler/Taylor take second set 21-11

  23. vballfreak808 March 20, 2014 2:05 pm

Will they make an announcement on HawaiiAthletics about the transfer or will Shoji be telling you Cindy?

  24. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 3:17 pm

Don’t think it will be officially announced by UH until player enrolled in school.
it’s a little different with a transfer as opposed to an incoming freshman who signed an NLI

  25. Brandon. March 20, 2014 3:18 pm

So we may not get any info about who the player is today?

  26. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 3:20 pm

    21. not sure who is voting on the sand poll but they likely were looking at who Nebraska had on its team and went from there. looking like they could be overrated but it is a (meaningless) poll. And give Hawaii some credit. They have a very good team. As mentioned before, Nebraska just flew in yesterday, played USC in today’s earlier match. Tough way to get acclimated.

  27. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 3:24 pm

    25. When I know you’ll know ‘-)
Shoji can’t talk about the recruit other than to say there is one.
playing a little detective to get the story. .

  28. Marv March 20, 2014 4:27 pm

So Shoji brought up this whole “big time transfer” just to offset the bad news about Vorster transferring? That’s what it sounds like. I mean why even mention it if you can’t provide any details until they’ve enrolled. BTW, didn’t everyone know about Kastl before she enrolled?

  29. PurpleMaple March 20, 2014 4:44 pm

Will be interesting to see what Shoji does to adjust for Jade’s departure as there isn’t anyone on the current roster at MB/MH other than Kalei Adolpho.

  30. Brandon. March 20, 2014 4:49 pm

    29. Transfer coming in and they have huff and maglio next year as well.

  31. max13 March 20, 2014 4:51 pm

    28. Re: Kastl, we knew she was transferring to UH pretty early on because 1, it was made known that she was released from ASU and was looking to transfer. 2, She talked a lot about it on Twitter.. we even knew that her other option was UCSB. If I remember correctly, UH didn’t make an official announcement until she was enrolled. Chances are the player transferring to UH was only recently released from her program and it hasn’t been announced, hence there hasn’t been any realistic speculation as to who it might be. And she probably isn’t as.. vocal as Kastl is on Twitter.

  32. formerlywarriorfan March 20, 2014 5:05 pm

Plus Ashley actually made a recruiting visit and was at one of the sand tournaments.

  33. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 5:24 pm

28 Not how it happened if you had been following along. Saw Shoji at a men’s volleyball game over a month ago. Had heard he might get a transfer and some other stuff. He said yes. but he couldn’t talk about it. we played 20 questions, he said it would big …. through out big time.
every time i’d see him i’d ask. he said no news. Asked Wong. all he said was he was looking at the transcripts, that was over 2 weeks ago. he said to talk to Shoji. Yesterday, saw him at sand. asked again. He said he’d tell me something tomorrow. don’t think he was blowing me off since he also told me about Vorster yesterday.
haven’t heard from him or anyone else.
So perhaps what was supposed to happen didn’t
    That happens.
my mistake was in mentioning it since I felt sure it was going to happen today.

  34. Cubicle1126 March 20, 2014 5:31 pm

Cindy — no worries. if and when the announcement happens … then it’ll happen. i think a small group of loyalists on here just want the news to be instantaneous. that’s understandable from fans … but all in due time. 🙂

  35. Brandon. March 20, 2014 5:41 pm

Don’t apologize Cindy. You did nothing wrong. When the announcement comes it will. I think since usually we have info about who it will be, and since this one is so undercover that why were so anxious

  36. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 5:42 pm

LC said he/she knew yesterday via twitter.

  37. haleiwacrossfitter March 20, 2014 5:52 pm

Like I said before…this is the most undercover transfer sting operation ever. It’s like the entire volleyball community got together and decided to not tell anyone anything on this one…volleyball conspiracy!! I think it is actually hilarious how not a single word, or even a possibility on who it is, is being mentioned anywhere in the volleyball underground social world.

For the record, I believe this transfer is happening, and my educated guess is still Annie Mitchem. Yes, she was JC Player of the Year, but she was not a D1 AA. Her not coming from a D1 university is the only reason I can speculate on why NO ONE is talking about it. No one is tracking this possibility from a JC.

But it could not be her and my belief of a volleyball conspiracy is still in play!! Haha…I really do think this is hilarious. Volleyball conscpiracy??? Hahaha, come on, that is funny stuff.

  38. Curious March 20, 2014 5:54 pm

The few clues screamed one name to me and just checked it out:

    Established, probably:

    Middle blocker
    NOT an All-American last year
    BUT STILL “big-time” (somehow)

How? I’d guess injury. Who was injured?

    Haleigh Hampton

    Her twitter 23 hours ago:

“Having to keep exciting news is the worst I just wanna scream it off a rooftop so it stops burning the tip of my tongue trying to get out.”

    Thoughts?

  39. haleiwacrossfitter March 20, 2014 5:55 pm

Spill the beans, LC! Or are you a part of this conspiracy, too?? 🙂

  40. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 6:16 pm

interesting name. she’s had so many injuries it would be a big gamble.

  41. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 6:17 pm

have been told repeatedly that Mitchem is 2015.

  42. rayson March 20, 2014 6:26 pm

    38. Do you think Gimmillaro would give her a release to play for a rival Big West team? And even if he did isn’t there a Big West rule about intra-conference transfers having to sit out a year?

  43. haleiwacrossfitter March 20, 2014 6:29 pm

Hampton is interesting, but not worth the gamble. She could barely move last year. Plus, LBSU is our in conference rival not sure she would get released to play right away. Plus, yes, she was big time when she was not injured, but I think her injuries are so advanced at this stage that I just don’t think she would make an impact for any team anymore.

But that is an interesting name to pull out of the hat, Curious. Good job searching that out. That twitter is interesting….

  44. Brandon. March 20, 2014 6:29 pm

Haleigh was talking about oractice on twitter like 8 days ago so I doubt it’s her. Plus brian G wouldn’t release her to a rival program like that

  45. Curious March 20, 2014 6:30 pm

Great points, all. Just an interesting name, really. Maybe her exciting news is that’s she switching to libero.

  46. Brandon. March 20, 2014 7:11 pm

I’m thinking it’s going to be from a conference like the wcc or the sec. Not pac 12 or b1g level, but still good.

  47. formerlywarriorfan March 20, 2014 7:42 pm

    44. Hampton coaches at a high school now I am assuming she is talking about that practice.
    And seriously doubt it’s her.

  48. Ki March 20, 2014 8:48 pm

    Besides…Hampton was an all-American. Can’t be her.

  49. Curious March 20, 2014 9:04 pm

    48. Only the first three teams of the AVCA All-America list are deemed All-Americans. Athletes who receive Honorable Mention honors are not technically All-Americans.

  50. mainlandgal March 20, 2014 9:11 pm

Heard Mitchem has some issues with grades. Would make more sense that she would be 2015. Gives her some time to get her grades in order.

  51. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 9:36 pm

    44. Not that I think it’s her but HH has been at the Beach for four years. If she graduates, she doesn’t need a release.

  52. Cindy Luis March 20, 2014 9:42 pm

    50. this is her second year at IVC. she didn’t play indoor as a freshman but did play sand in 2012. played indoor 2013, playing sand in 2014. She’ll need to get her AA before going to a four-year school. Pestolesi will see that it happens if that’s what she wants.

  53. mauna March 20, 2014 10:56 pm

    Another guess, Olivia Magill.

  54. haleiwacrossfitter March 21, 2014 12:36 am

That’s a great guess, Mauna. And a real possibility.

  55. max13 March 21, 2014 6:04 am

Re: 45, what an announcement that would be. A 6’6″ Libero. That’d be a first. Plus, she could practically attack from the backrow without jumping and be more effective than most attackers.

  56. max13 March 21, 2014 6:04 am

    If only! ^^ 😉

  57. connor March 21, 2014 9:01 am

the interesting thing about Olivia Magill is that her mother appears to be polynesian, so there might be a local connection with her. Further she is a 6’2″ middle which will plug the hole left by the Vorster departure.

  58. mauna March 21, 2014 9:29 am

well, we’ll see. Olivia’s mom is Tongan, she’s not playing sand, 2014 roster is not up, she’s not an AA but Arizona’s best middle, and Daves Shoji and Rubio are really good friends.

  59. tako March 21, 2014 3:48 pm

By the way, just read Emily Hartong had surgery for a torn labrum in her shoulder on the 9th. Just sharing VB info…

  60. Cindy Luis March 22, 2014 6:10 pm

    59. yes, it was mentioned after she was seen at MVB in a sling.
