Cindy, how are the matches run? How many are played simultaneously and how do they determine the order of matches?

2. wouldn’t make too much out of beating Stanford in its first year of sand, using all indoor, no sand scholarships, which is the reason Cook transfered to UH when offered a scholarship so she could get her Master’s
Beach lost half its team from last year, 1 sand scholarship, that to the UCLA transfer, the rest indoor players.
win over the 49ers was big for the SandBows.
Must be kind of interesting to watch the coaches coach five matches at the same time…interesting.

5. Order of finish is the order which the five simultaneous matches finished.
5. as seta one said. UH knew that the match was tied at 2-2 when it went to Set 3 for Tiegs and Cook.
coaches roam the courts, except for Court 5 you can watch four at the same time sort of. UH had a head, assistant and a volunteer coach so that’s 3 sets of eyes to watch whats going on.
The sides also switch when the score hits increments of 7 points throughout i.e. 5-2, 17-11. when it goes to a third, sides switch at increments of 5 … 4-1, 6-4, 10-5 etc.
Congrats to the team and congrats to Nikki and Katie for defeating Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson who was a duo that never lost last season (21-0)
Yeah I think Jackson and Johnson is probably Long Beach’s best team, they tried to be savvy and play them down at number two but Nikki Taylor/ Katie Speiler is a nice surprise.
I am surprise Karlee Riggs isn’t in one of the top 3 pairs.
Does the beach really only have one scholarship player? I was for sure the Wagner twins were on scholarship I know they picked Long Beach over UH.
Thanks Setaone and Cindy..I need to make it out to one of these sand matches one day. Living in Haleiwa and pain in the butt parking in waikiki makes traveling to see one a bit of an undesire…but, I’m sure I will one day.
10. 49ers coach told me she only had one sand -specific scholarship this year. The indoor players are scholarship so they’re covered on sand.
11. Today not the day to come down to Waikiki with the Eikiden Relay festival. limited metered parking at Kapiolani Park. several lots are closed to accommodate the parade. Kalakaua closed for the parade.
9. They certainly were the best last season. Believe they played at No. 2 last season as well. could be wrong.
Riggs/Rooks beat Long Beach St. #1 team in 3
^ You said ‘it’, male-/kane-fan, the “best” was the 2nd ranked Nat’l team (repeat AA’s moreover from the 2012 year). Jackson & Johnson played @#3 last season and are STILL #3–even IF they’ve played @#2 this weekend. Brian is the most savvy with strategy/manipulation(s) in going for the team win versus individual pairs..some maintain “sand bagging” as a ‘leadership’ tradition.

16. No Jackson-Johnson are playing at No. 2 this year and may stay there. LBSU graduated half their team from last year. I said I thought they had played as No. 2 last year but that I could be wrong. And I was.Jackson and Johnson played No. 5 in last year’s avca championship

#9 & #16: Surprised too that Riggs isn’t paired in one of the top three flights. She and Rooks seem to be gelling in the court so could just be coaches strategy. R and R definitely prooves themselves when they beat LBSU #1 flight in a 3-set thriller. It was great to witness and even better with the outcome! R and R battled and held off 6 or 7 match points in set 3.
17. opening weekend. plenty of time to play with where the teams are placed. agree it was strategy, but all the coaches did it.
they’ll look at how last weekend went and adjust.
I think the 1-2 teams for UH may stay there but you never know.
I agree 100% Cindy. I didn’t mean it to look bad on the coaches … There is a strategy in placing pairs in the flights that’s for sure. I think there will possibly be movement in flights 3, 4 and 5. And that’s okay. These girls seem to be a “team” this year. Much more so than last season. They all have the same goal and that will make for a great season all around!! Looking forward to their next island tournament!
19. didn’t take it as a negative. Wong has said chemistry has played a big part in the pairings. he was pleasantly surprised by the Spieler-Taylor pairing. Taylor in her first year relies a lot on her natural athleticism and is so appreciative of Spieler’s instruction for playing on the beach.
wong said he likes the work ethic and chemistry this season. The players say they have really trained hard, the non-indoor players especially in the fall, and it is paying off.
