ST: Regarding the picture that you posted yesterday of Garness and Leonard –

Garness is supposed to be about 6-4 & close to 300.

But Leonard looks so much bigger.

Question: Just how tall is Leonard, and what is his weight. He looks like a player !!!

    Thanks.

P.S – I hope to be able to attend a few Spring practices. And, like many others, can’t wait for Fall ’09 to roll around.

I think it was a bad angle because they’re both about the same height, roughly 6-4, 6-5ish, and maybe 300.
They’re both nice guys, although you can tell Leonard has a little more of that edginess.
What I like is they’re embraced by the team.

Man, I have to miss a day on the blog (except for a short posting break during lunch) and an interesting lurker (who mentioned that he’s posted here before under another name that he couldn’t remember) goes off on me. Convenient timing when I had already said the night before that I had to be off the blog.

I hope nobody minds if I respond to the posts directed towards me. I’ll try to limit my responses so that they are relevant to the Warrior program.

I always reserve judgment on a person as a football player until the pads are on and they’re tossed into game like conditions. Remember the old saying, “look like Tarzan, but play like Jane” , while other players, “look like Jane but play like Tarzan”.

  28. whitey March 5, 2009 7:36 am

Good morning Tsaikos. Weather here looks good, so got to get ready for game today. May my friend, sunshine, make you happy.

No disrespect to Jane of course, and Rob25. Who is strong enough to bear children where Tarzan would faint.

    Whew.

  32. Garret March 5, 2009 7:41 am

Regarding post 14, asking me for my measurables. Well, I gained 7.7 pounds between Friday night and Sunday brunch while I was in Vegas, so I don’t know my measurables now. When I was in graduate school I regularly did 36 reps (3 sets of 12) at 225 pounds, but that was on a machine–on free weights I only did 36 reps at 185 (this was for a strength class and we were monitored and graded, so it is recorded in some document somewhere). Considering I only weighed about 150 pounds then, that wasn’t bad.

The discussion Ralph and I had that you responded to was whether or not Samson was too small to play center in the NFL. I said that he was not too small, but that Parcell’s system that wants bigger centers and doesn’t care about mobility isn’t a good fit for him. Pride and Buffoman came to the same conclusion, and I know that Pride played OL for UH.

In addition, I don’t think that you need to have played OL to be able to come to the conclusion that I came to.

    1. At least five different reporters from Miami-area papers have apparently been told by Miami’s head coach and by Miami’s management that one of their top priorities this offseason was to get a bigger center to replace Samson. They have reported this and I’ve posted many of those things here.

    2. Miami’s head coach was an OL coach at Dallas under Parcells before Parcells chose him for Miami. He was specifically asked about Samson’s situation and his words made it clear that they were looking to for another center…he’s mentioned moving Samson to G.

    3. Miami gave Grove a $30 million contract to be their starting center. That is *not* money that an NFL team can afford to pay a backup player, especially when $14 mil is guaranteed so they cannot cut him. Miami also signed C/G Berger in February to provide them with depth at both positions.

    4. That isn’t a great situation for Samson because both starters at G also return this season, and one G was drafted by Miami’s current management while Samson was drafted by the previous management.

    5. I don’t know if you missed this, but Miami’s management mentioned being open to trading Samson a month or so ago. It was reported that Samson has trade value but doesn’t fit Miami’s system because they value size/power over mobility/athleticism. That isn’t *my* words, that was from published articles.

    6. Samson was my favorite player during the 2006 season. I have obsessively followed his pro career, from his first rookie camp to when he moved up in the depth chart and eventually became a starter, to what has been happening under the new management. I’ve even read chat transcripts, full-length interviews, watched podcasts, etc., to get even a single line of information about Samson. I worry that I post way too much about Samson on this blog, so sometimes I only post about 1/2 of the things that I find, just so that the basic information is out there.

I fail to see how my playing the game would change *Miami’s management’s* priorities for their OL. I fail to see how my playing the game would change the fact that 2 of the 3 free agents from other teams that Miami’s management has signed are players specifically chosen to fit their OL better than Samson. I fail to see how my playing the game would change the fact that some NFL teams want bigger, more physical OL and some NFL teams want smaller, more mobile OL…and Miami’s system changed from the latter (which fitted Samson very well!) to the former.

Whew Garret!…remind me never to piss you off!

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid March 5, 2009 8:15 am

BTW- Those were some great measurables in the bench. 🙂

  41. Garret March 5, 2009 8:15 am

You gotta be kidding me that no Texas recruit ever broke their verbal commitment to a school.

Either you purposely are going out of your way to attack me by distorting what I said or you have a problem with understanding what I said.

Here is some information for you:

    1. I’ve posted several examples here from Texas high school coaches who were upset about scholarship offers being pulled from their players because they shut the recruiting process down once the player made the verbal commit. I haven’t posted the countless statements by Texas high school football coaches about how they did not want ANY of their players to break their verbal commit, because the standard procedure is that a player keeps the commit…I specifically mentioned that there are a players that do break verbal commits, but that doesn’t seem to happen at schools with those coaches.

    2. I’ll bet that I’ve followed Texas high school recruiting *much* closer than you have, ever since I lived in the same dorm with the Texas football players from 1985-1989. I also served as a recruiting host (not for football) for Texas from 1994-1998, which is a great gig to eat great food when you are a student. Recruiting has changed a lot since the 80s, with the biggest change occurring when Mack Brown came to Texas and started his early offer push.

    3. I have a zillion examples, but here is an easy one for you to verify: Texas and Oklahoma go after a similar pool of recruits. Name a single recruit over the past 5 years that committed to Texas and then went to Oklahoma or that committed to Oklahoma and then went to Texas. Texas’ biggest need in the 2009 class was at DT, and they went after McFarland for 2 years…but when he committed to Oklahoma they completely ended all contact, with their last conversation with him (a week or two before that NY Times article came out) saying that they wouldn’t bother him or his family anymore unless he notified them that he wanted to go to Texas. Texas has regularly backed off of players once they commit to Oklahoma, and Oklahoma does the same with Texas–the only QB that Oklahoma had offered for their 2010 class was Connor Wood, he was their #1 and #1a QB prospect this year, but once he committed to Texas they moved on to other recruits. You can also look up how *zero* verbal commits to Texas A&M have gone to Texas in years and *zero* verbal commits to Texas have switched to Texas A&M in years.

    4. USC and UCLA, on the other hand, regularly try to convince commits to the other school to switch to them. Then some USC coaches went to U-Dub and they showed the same zest for trying to get recruits to break their commits…and it worked on some. USC, UCLA, U-Dub, Cal, UH, Oregon State, and so on all either lost verbal commits or snagged verbal commits (in most cases both) from recruits from California or Hawaii.

    5. You really don’t know what you are talking about if you think that the Texas high school recruits break their verbal commits just as often as the California high school recruits, especially recently! Considering that the Texas recruits tend to commit earlier, something is fundamentally different in the recruiting environments in both states.

    6. Of course there are cases where recruits in any state break their verbal commits. I never said otherwise. Often there are specific reasons for that, like when JJ asked an OL to grayshirt at SMU and he took a scholarship to UTEP.

Again I fail to see how whether or not a person has played the game can change how Texas recruits in general commit earlier and keep their commits more regularly than recruits in California or Hawaii. Or how that affects the point in my post yesterday about how it is important that Mac is building relationships with all of Hawaii’s high school coaches and how that is important for UH’s long-term recruiting.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid March 5, 2009 8:22 am

Garret don’t get *pissed off*, he gets factual!

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid March 5, 2009 8:24 am

    Tsai,

What’s your take on things? Are we “stuck” with Bolla?

  44. Garret March 5, 2009 8:25 am

    DPK,

I kept up the bench press until I got married…then as a newlywed I somehow stopped going to the gym as much as before. I tried going back to the same weight levels that I had before and hurt something pretty bad. I kept ignoring it and going back to the gym, refusing Lori’s requests for me to see the doctor. Until one day I couldn’t turn my head at all in one direction and I couldn’t lift my arm to my shoulder level!

It turns out that I kept lifting even though the sharp pain I was feeling was trying to let me know that something serious was wrong with me. Next thing I know I was in the emergency room and I had to spend a year or so in a neck brace. Teaching in a neck brace was pretty weird, but my students got used to it I think.

Ever since then I had to take it easy in the gym, which is why I went up to the mid-170s. I’m in the mid-150s now (if you don’t count the Vegas weight I gained!), but I have to do mostly cardio now the only strength stuff I do now is 100 pushups and leg stuff.

  45. jm2375 March 5, 2009 8:30 am

Stretch – it was a Highlander.

  46. Just Saying March 5, 2009 8:30 am

    Garrett,

    stop posting so much spam.

  47. Garret March 5, 2009 8:30 am

I really hope that this process JD is going through would allow him to get rid of Bolla without having to pay off the rest of the contract. If he’s able to do that, he’ll save a LOT of money and give a huge boost to the women’s basketball program.

Some people were calling for Bolla to be fired earlier in the season and didn’t care if UH had to pay him off for his contract…but JD might be able to get rid of Bolla and keep the money, just by being patient and doing a proper investigation. If you want to terminate someone for cause, you have to go through all of these steps and you can’t rush it. If JD is forced to pay to settle the buyout, by waiting he’ll need to pay a much lower buyout number. One more reason why we should have faith in this AD, unlike the last one.

  48. Garret March 5, 2009 8:33 am

So, I know that when Just Saying and homey2shawty…DA BEAST YO! posted comments on my blog they came from the same IP address. I wonder how many other aliases Just Saying has here?

  49. Willie March 5, 2009 8:35 am

Garret, if you are an attorney I would want you to represent me.

On Texas football, a few years ago or more, I think a Texas college pulled a scholarship offer from a senior at a perenial Texas high school power. The coach at that high school said this college will never be able to set foot on its campus & recruit there. Do you remember this? If you can, please provide details.

  50. edline March 5, 2009 8:36 am

this is kind of random but does anyone know who will go into spring ball as the starting WR’s and slot backs

  51. Garret March 5, 2009 8:38 am

    Kekoa,

I thought I could post something that would summarize posts I’ve made over the past few months (articles about Samson) and make some points of my own. I’m done now because I don’t think there is anything else I needed to respond to. Plus, I have a conference call thing starting 21 minutes and I need to go over the PowerPoint they just sent to me. I hate it when I get the PowerPoint right before a meeting is going to start!

jm – it was a co-worker’s wife who makes too much money so can send their kids to Punahou. Damn I need a raise….

    his response…..

Ask jm if the back bumper had a big dent that looks like someone’s husband tried to pull out w/ some tie-wire because he didn’t want to waste good money to pay to have it repaired since it was a brand new bumper that was less than 6 months old when she inadvertently reversed into another car in a parking lot and then it would probably have been my wife…

  54. jm2375 March 5, 2009 8:55 am

Rob25 – I no like get pulled by my ear again! So when Big C posts, I’m here!

Rascal? I swear it’s the 2 giri-giri’s! For those that don’t know what giri-giri’s are they are what the mainlanders call cowlicks. That’s why I have bad hair days. So what is jm####’s excuse? Notice I’m not picking on Big C…

  83. Garret March 5, 2009 10:41 am

    Al,

Your #58 was good advice, of course. I honestly don’t think that my blood pressure was raised at all while I was writing that. You should see me when I’m upset!

Next time I’ll just ignore it or respond like how Tom did yesterday. I did think that the information was relevant enough to the Warriors that I could make the post longer than a normal post. Plus, I was off the blog for so long and had some time to kill before my meeting began…

  84. Kekoa (iPhone) March 5, 2009 10:43 am

    G’day mih! Been chillin’ huh?

Greetings to da big ‘C’ from the ceded lands! (unless somebody sells it out from under me!)

  85. Jason March 5, 2009 10:46 am

I can just imagine if I had Garret as a professor — that would be frightening!

“No, you get a C, not a B, and here’s why! *shows pages of evidence* Now get out, before I throw this shot put at you!”

    😉

Nah, nah, he wouldn’t do that. But Garret indeed is Da Man. Contrast that to some other engineer named Garett … 😛

  86. Garret March 5, 2009 10:47 am

    Tom,

I saw your post and thank you for pointing out the distortion of what I was saying. One other example I could have given is that Texas didn’t bring in any recruit for an official visit who was verbally committed to another school. Many other schools in Texas and Oklahoma followed the same policy. We saw very publicly with a certain Long Beach Poly DE and with other recruits this year how Pac-10 schools would bring them in UH commits and other Pac-10 school commits on official visits.

Welcome back Colomaohana! I thought you were great on Esme’s site so I was so happy when you started posting here, then confused as to why someone would try to drive you away.

  89. Garret March 5, 2009 10:52 am

    Jason,

I always went over my grading policy with my students whenever they had a complaint about their grade. I had one of the highest professor evaluations at Santa Clara even though I gave out a lower grade average than the average for the school, which I took to mean that my students thought I was fair.

Both of my parents were public school teachers in Hawaii and I heard a lot about students (and their parents) complaining about grades. So, I made sure I could document everything in case a student complained!

  90. homey ℞ March 5, 2009 10:54 am

Loa – Looking at the above schedule, what day are you going to show up? I’m thinking of a couple of days because I have to check out the receivers, RB’s, LB’s, DB’s, O-line, and D-line. Figure I’ll see the QB’s while they are warming up with the receivers. Hmmmm, that’s about everyone.

curveball will probably be checking out the kicking game. He’ll give me the scoops in that area.

  91. Garret March 5, 2009 10:54 am

Congratulations to Tuika Tufaga, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane and Kahai Choy for their amazing bench press performance in team testing!

meet the scourge head on otherwise it pollinates, breeds is my philosophy

true life is short, blood pressure rises and there are worthwhile things to worry about…but preservation of what is right is worth enunciating and maintaining imo…this blog should be

impeaching the ill will of those that reign with such narrow mindedness, pettiness…and **garret** did it beautifully, rebuttaled…with **words** and it was great to witness how the other posters veiled interrogations were met with facts. It was such an undressing, embarrassingly to say the least, that hopefully russian doesn’t come back.

  94. Jason March 5, 2009 10:55 am

Uh oh, maybe the idea of earning a C from Professor Garret was a little cocky … 😀

  95. Garret March 5, 2009 10:56 am

    Jason,

Santa Clara also counted the “+” and “-” grades into the official GPA calculations, so the biggest arguments were also with students getting a “B+” or a “C+” would wanted an “A-” or “B-” instead. I used to agonize over those decisions, but could always explain it when questioned.

  96. Garret March 5, 2009 10:58 am

    Jason,

You are doing well at UH, which means that you could do well anywhere. I have no doubt about that.

One more post before my lunch break is over.

Best wishes to Travis Sims as he expands his coaching duties.

Travis Sims, former running back for the Denver Broncos, will take over as head coach of the fourth-grade Bulldogs. Sims will continue to be the position coach for running backs and linebackers of all age groups.

“The knowledge and experience Travis brings to the program is incomparable,” said Scott Cantu, the Bulldogs’ director of football. “Where else can your kid get a football mentor that has experience playing at the highest level?”

Sims also holds several rushing records from when he was a stand-out at the University of Hawaii. He was a prep athlete at Federal Way High School.

  105. Stephen Tsai March 5, 2009 11:18 am

    Starting receivers:
    It’s up in the air.
I think Salas and Lane are supposed to be the widouts; Pilares is a slot; the other slot is between Ryan Henry and Dustin Blount.
But then Rodney Bradley has been doing really well at right wideout.
And I saw Salas working out with the slots.
And Miah Ostrowski lost a bunch of weight and is kicking butt.
    So the answer is:
    I dunno.

for the author to write something like this, I would think, he must feel his 2 sources are creditable…where does freedom of the press allows authors to publically submit such a post if it turns out that manti teo didn’t throw a punch.

i’m not vilifying manti unless i hear the whole story, yet the author, scott wolf, seems to be in the know, acknowledging that the circumstance may be sketcy, however he feels a rush to disparage manti character if indeed this turns out to be untrue. this is not right, one way or the other…if there’s hard copy, police reports, eye witness reports then okay report it, not otherwise

note-i wonder if the author would have asperse a rumor, a dark cloud on a current usc player that wasn’t totally substantiated-i doubt it.

    Hi,
Just clear water or blue sky fan here. I am wondering if you guys are putting on two names from Waimea High School, Kauai? They are actually not known to myself, but others already know them. They are #37 Kenny Estes, #95 Vaughn Maetoga, trying to follow #57 Jordon Dizon, if he is still on the roster of Detroit Lions. Apperantly they want to represent Waimea High School athletics on Kauai. Any word on them if they will be playing football and/or graduating as they confessed in their respective degrees like whatever? Or was it Business or Economics?

  177. PONO March 5, 2009 2:31 pm

ST, Glad to hear that Ostrowski has lost some weight and has been working hard. I have been critical of him recently because during Xmas time he looked overweight and out of shape. If he can stay in shape and keep the grades up he’ll be a very productive player.

  178. warriorfanny March 5, 2009 2:37 pm

I was disappointed to see only three ballers benching over 400 lbs. and the conscipcuous absence of OLM challenging for starting roles.
The positive of course was Kahai Choy, and this kid is NO surprise as a neophyte strongman at Kamehameha and showed extremely well at the HS combines.
Today’s weight training methods do emphasize different lifts, mainly for speed, quickness and upward thrust motions.
Still the bench is seen as an unofficial barometer to measure your overall team strength.

Boise State, as an example has 2 digits representing the number of players benching over 400lbs.

The 225 lb bench is still employed in NFL combines as a measurement stick but that too has reps assigned to its meaning.

Anyway, thanx to ST for keeping us posted…Im sure there are more warriors that will break the 2.0 mach barrier before fall camp begins.

Pride, my Bro Kaipo lives on Maui and will be hanging w us that day.

Homey, #2 Son Pono is 9th grade. He recent rec’d invite from KS Varsity Football – one of 7 9th graders. He will be competing at Corner or Free Safety. He’s working on strength and speed this offseason, and also doing High Jump for KS JV Track. We are excited for the fall.

Glad the World Baseball Classic kicked off last night with the China vs. Japan game. Like many, I thought the initial inception of this tournament three years ago was well-intended but was going to be a big blunder and failure, but it caught on bigger than expected. Nothing like national pride on the line, and still a little oomphed that Mexico knocked the U.S. out of the tournament the last go around.

So when do the portagee field a baseball team? 👿 😈

  210. Kekoa March 5, 2009 4:34 pm

Nalani ~ Just to confirm what SteveM posted. Whitey & Duffer are working out some details for the Maui T-gate.

There are several individual plans being made to travel and stay over for day like you and return at night. Some are going as early as Thursday and staying until Sunday.

Others are taking their own vehicles via SF to carry T-gate gear. (And all the contraband TSA normally takes away from us). So like Steve says, post what plans you’ve made, and it’ll make it easy for us to hook up with the Maui Chaptah.

Oh and one other thing. Tell Kaha’i for me that his hard work will pay off for him I’m sure. Keep up that all out effort! I know he’s making mama very proud! I know his Papa is proud already, I seen his chest walk in da door before him!

  211. Kekoa March 5, 2009 4:38 pm

Big ‘C’ ~ I was careful to avoid all the gyms this afternoon so as not to disturb your workout on the bag. Lord help me if you mistook me for one!

    Peace my sistah!

Did UH test the 40 yard dash? If so, what were some of the notable times.
    thx

  213. Stephen Tsai March 5, 2009 5:09 pm

    No 40s.
All they did were the power cleans and max bench.

  215. Stephen Tsai March 5, 2009 5:12 pm

But we’re still going to Pro Day … I think.

  216. brew808 March 5, 2009 5:31 pm

😯 WHAT!!? 😯 That is ridiculous! Whitey/duffer – would you please set-up a trip for ST & PL to fly to Maui for the game, and stay-over for the post-game party? Trip for 2, 1-2 nights, 2 rooms. Please let us know what the per share cost are – and put me down for (at least) a share. Please….. 🙄 😀 😕

  227. brew808 March 5, 2009 5:52 pm

Re: #225 – duffer Was that a question or a statement (or a request)? 🙄 😆 It may be problematic for any “dark-side” activities that were planned. BTW – still looking for an explanation on wth is “dark-side”!

Hi duffer – Remember Jerome Williams? He’s trying to make the A’s roster as #5 starter. He has a slim chance. The A’s are stacked with quality young arms. It’ll be interesting how he performs during the Spring and what combination of youth vs. (some) experience they go with. He’s dropped 20-30# and seems to be doing well. 😀 Go A’s!!! 😆 😯 😀

  235. wafan March 5, 2009 6:10 pm

I thought buffets were about the only kinds of places Tsai-ko’s frequented?

  236. wafan March 5, 2009 6:12 pm

Buffets and, for some Tsai-ko’s in their younger days, places where women demonstrated how strong their muscles were.

  237. brew808 March 5, 2009 6:14 pm

Yeah… those Hostess cupcakes and twinkies aren’t the healthiest fuud to be gorging on…. I like the idea of p-sausage and kim-chee fried rice, or those pancakes…. 😀 😯

  251. SteveM March 5, 2009 6:48 pm

brew — I normally make an “Away Game” page–like you saw last year for the PDX gatherings for the OSU game and others. But since the SEA and LAS games are only separated by a week and the LAS one is a major gathering with it’s own page, I’ll probably leave it together for now.

…too bad, a cruise would be hard to schedule, especially if you have to book and pay for both adjacent cabins and the two opposite for the guys in suits and dark glasses. Tables for 10 at dinner could be awkward… 🙁

…just kidding. email me you SEA plans when ready.

    James Donovan,

I gotta get this off my chest, before the season starts, so we all can enjoy the most of our coming season.

I’m looking forward to having fun at the stadium, but I already know we’re gonna have a problem at Aloha Stadium. The problem is the cold water thrown on crowd participation at the end of the game. I can see it coming. who wants to go to a game because when its over, its over. there is no mass mood encouragement postgame, enjoying the nostalgia of the moment. Aloha Security is on your case, gotta get outta dare pronto. Compare to what I see on TV nowadays, Aloha is not Aloha.

I watched the Penn State-Illini basketball game tonight, saw PS come from behind, and saw the fans crash the floor, cheering, hugging the players. been watching that kind of stuff all week long, the post game cheer.

I watched the football games last season, the OSU Beaver fans crashing the field, the Ohio State fans, the Texas Tech fans, the fans on the mainland all crashing the fields, hugging their players.

The fans celebrating. The fans participating. The fans looking foward to the next week’s game..

And then I think about our Homeland Security at Aloha Stadium. At SSC. And I watch da security guards waiting for 10 minutes on the clock, and watch them come down the aisles to the bottom of the bleachers, just waiting for the chance to ruin a 8 year old’s evening, hold em off from asking for autographs, waiting to boss the kid’s around, ruin fan participation. all in the name of Homeland Security in Hawaii.

and you wonder why our crowd is not as great as it could be, and you’re thinking its because our team is not good enough to draw the crowds?

think again. the UH and Aloha Stadium’s security apparatus gotta review their head space. they’re great at telling the rest of us no can gamble, but we all love Vegas. we can buy tix to OSU game and crash the field over there, but not over here. same thing at all the big schools.

Go buss em up, JD. We need a Obama for us in Hawaii. Be my Obama.
you’re doing good. you can do better. make it happen, please.

    jmo.

  257. el guapo March 5, 2009 7:42 pm

    BigHilo,

So your take on the wording in Bolla’s contract is that going be hard to get rid of him? I no more the legal-kine mind so I not sure what Tom said.

  258. bighilofan2 March 5, 2009 8:03 pm

    howzit el guapo.

depends on if you get one republican judge or one democrat judge. 2 different guyz looking at da same language come to da different conclusions.

i wuz saying early this morning dat da contract not clear clear clear. think of Bobby Knight. gotta get him on videotape. i dunno if we get video, and day taking too long fo me to tink day get clearcut evidence. so at da end ah da day, gonna be arguing about what da AND means. does it mean he gotta be one punk AND one crook, or is it enough for him to just be a luuzah or one punk and da players no like him, bringin disrespect on da team.

and because we goin off like dis, da bugga no can just dig out, he tink gotta protect his name, honor, even tho he bringin the girls down, the team down, the State women’s pride down. so imo going take 2 years to turn dis bugga around. he going stay to da bitte (German) end. and if we fire him, which I think should happen, he going leave with a black mark but he gonna get his paycheck until da judge says its pau, so I’m looking at the other clauses in the contract about attorneyfees and costs, which I neva see yet.

den again, my specialty is stir fry, not contracts. 😀

  259. el guapo March 5, 2009 8:11 pm

    BHF2

Going be interesting to see what Mrs. Bolla going say, probably “I didn’t see what happened”.

  260. bighilofan2 March 5, 2009 8:12 pm

i think we should pay ebolla a year’s salary, cut our losses to 1 instead of 2, and let him go his way.

if we fight him, we gonna have to go outside counsel, probably, and spend money over there. bad publicity = bad recruting effect. but we’re already in a lose situation, so the sooner we get rid of him, the better. thats my opinion.

it also depends on if JD’s paperwork from last year is good enough to have warned him clearly, or was it one of those “you gotta do better” but there was no finding of wrongdoing before and a clear warning of consequences in the letter.

but I haven’t seen the evidence so the truth is I’m only guessing.
but I’m backing JD and da ceded lands security team on dis one.

  265. TOM March 5, 2009 9:06 pm

el guapo: In the Bolla situation, if he indeed kicked the girl, there is perfect grounds to fire him. What BHF2 says has validity. If there are grounds to fire him, and he fights the dismissal, you do have all kinds of legal costs to worry about.

Like the HF episode, the UH legal people apparently like to take the easy way out and just pay him off rather than fight. With $125,000 per year salary, if the violation – i.e. kicking a player is clear, if he had a habit of doing this sort of behavior before and was counseled, I would fight him tooth and nail – $250,000 for defense but not one cent for tribute!

  266. al ™ March 5, 2009 9:15 pm

    i agree tom.
if they have proof beyond a reasonable doubt and if he was counseled regarding abusive behavior then challenge it. fire him for just cause. heck they even have a case for sexual harassment which could result in some damages against the coach.

but, yah go for it. make em pay.

and even if as you say, the legal fees cost more than the salary, i would still take em to court if need be rather than give him a single red cent.

  267. Kekoa March 5, 2009 9:17 pm

Tom ~ The one other way would be to get him to resign, correct?

  268. Ralph March 5, 2009 9:24 pm

yep if UH has a case against Bolla by all means take him to court….should UH prevail Bolla will have a judgment against him that will forever follow him. If the court goes to court, Bolla has to be thinking, if I lose what happens to my reputation with a court verdict as opposed to resigning with a stigma but not a court judgment…deal the cards, hold’em, which lawyer will blink first….Big Hilo you’re out, you giggle too much

  269. Ralph March 5, 2009 9:26 pm

I’m hoping the first letter of reprimand was explicit and a very stern warning of consequences…but I think it wasn’t, otherwise why would the UH hire his wife and complicate matters…did UH think by having his wife around he would calm down or she could control his temper…bad judgment and choice by the selection committee…

  274. Garret March 5, 2009 9:38 pm

What if UH come to some number that it can live with to avoid trial costs and a lengthy process that could hurt the program and end up offering $50k or $100k to Bolla? Although I agree with Tom and Al about not wanting to give Bolla a dime, there could be a number much smaller than $250k that UH could live with.

UH does have a lot of supporter who are lawyers (both on this blog and among the people I met in New Orleans before the Sugar Bowl)…would any of them take the case for free, to support the program that way? It would be good publicity and generate goodwill for that person’s practice.

  275. Garret March 5, 2009 9:45 pm

Has UH looked into using this recruiting service? I was surprised that 11 of the 12 Big 12 teams subscribe (only Texas Tech doesn’t), 7 Pac-10 teams, Notre Dame, Portland State (Glanville) and BSU. Rogers serves as a recruiting consultant to 50 D-IA programs…is UH missing out here or is there no need for his services?

    Jason,

I’d agree with you if his expertise is only about Texas players. That is what I thought was the case when I first read about him, as I remember him when he was Texas’ recruiting coordinator. However, I was surprised at the long list of schools that are his clients, some of which have little or no players from the state of Texas. That is why I’m curious about the schools who don’t go after Texas players too often who are clients of his service.

Garret: Just looking at his schedule of events, I found one in Missouri, one in Tennessee. Everything else was Texas.

I agree that some of those schools probably won’t go after too many Texas players. Or at the very least, they might go after them, but not get any/many. But you know as well as anyone how talent-rich Texas is. Some schools might say, “Let’s put a little money into it, maybe we get something that’ll make it worth it.” Not to mention, maybe some of those schools have coaches with ties to this guy from before.

    Nalani,

I’m so impressed by how Kahai did today…that was the result of a lot of hard work and shows his dedication. You mention that he also works hard in the classroom and on the practice field, so I have great hopes for his Warrior future!

  294. Garret March 5, 2009 10:22 pm

I can’t believe that the Advertiser wouldn’t send ST and the Princess to *Maui* to cover the event there! That will be huge news in Maui and anything with the Warriors is huge news in Hawaii! It doesn’t cost much to go to Maui…considering the amount of stories ST would generate and the amount of hits that the videos from the Princess would generate, this is such an odd decision.

  295. Nalani March 5, 2009 10:29 pm

Thx Garret, Kekoa, Homey, and all the Tsaikos….you guyz r truly Ohana to us.

Ref classroom, Kahai is an EE major, took 16 credits his first fall semester, and earned a 3.0+ with classes such as Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering 101. Now taking Adv Calculus, Physics, and Chem w a couple labs.

Of course, not just to brag about my son (which all parents are entitled to do!), but to bring to light that these young men have to make extreme commitments to training, studying, giving up free time, eating right, working out, studying film, travelling, budgeting their finances…I have a new appreciation for the life of a D1 Student/Athlete and am inclined to support them vehemently from the sidelines should anyone boo or jeer. These young men…my son included but not the only one by any means….are fine examples to aspiring athletes and are deserving of our support.

The Tsaikos have always been strong and positive supporters of UH Athletics. I’m very proud to be a Tsaiko. Thank you all.

BTW, not sure if anyone is out there cause it seems like a slow night on the blog, but Na Leo got to sing tonight at the OIA banquet. At $125/tix I was surprised at the turnout. I’m guessing 1000 people. OC16 produced the event and honored Mitzi Lehano, the visionary who brought high school sports to local cable TV.

Aulani got to hang out w me backstage while she did homework…she watched Tony Silva transform into Linda Lingle. Also backstage awaiting their performance were Makaha Sons and C&K. A stellar lineup. We were all volunteers, FYI, just in case anyone is wondering if state tax $$s were spent.

    Nolan Tokuda was feature speaker.

  304. Garret March 5, 2009 10:45 pm

    homey,

I programmed using Lisp back when I worked at JPL, one of the 6 computer languages I learned when I worked there. But that was awhile ago and I think that you probably could do a better job than me as a programmer now…I’ve seen your html ability. Right now I live in MATLAB and math.

But the asterisks were just because I wanted that they weren’t sending ST and the Princess to Maui. It isn’t like they were going to the mainland, I can’t imagine a Warrior event in Hawaii with thousands of fans attending where the Advertiser wouldn’t send their key people to cover it. Maybe they are going to use a reporter in Maui (or even just reprint the Maui News articles) to save money, but that would be a big mistake in my opinion because the events on Maui could influence stories for days afterwards.

  305. Nalani March 5, 2009 10:46 pm

Al….New album has been sidelined for a few months….we are SO busy with scheduling tours for 2009. We are planning to do 14 – 16 shows in Japan this year, 9 shows in Mexico, 10 mainland shows, and some very exciting but still secret stuff that may be announced later. Geez, I’m glad that we’re not celebrating our 25th Anniversary every year – couldn’t handle!

  306. Jason March 5, 2009 10:47 pm

Kaha‘i is the next Garret! Wow, that’s amazing. No one can say those classes are easy at UH. Especially the calculus classes; I still remember how hard my first (and only) calculus class (at UH) was. Although I do have to be a little nitpicky and say “advanced calculus” is different from what I think you’re talking about, Nalani; I think you’re talking about 2nd or 3rd semester calc in the four-semester sequence. We have a Math 431-432 Advanced Calculus series, which I would never take. Hard enough taking the pre-requisite for that sequence, Math 331, Intro to Real Analysis. 😀

But anyways, for any student to have a 3.0+ GPA while studying these courses is pretty great; to do this while playing a sport is amazing.

    http://www.sportshawaii.com/madison/

Many have said that cancer is something that already has or someday will affect you and your loved ones. Hopefully, you have not yet had to face this challenge. If so, it might be useful to put yourself into Scott and Maddie’s shoes for a little while. In fact, I did that earlier today, and I was touched by what they’ve had to go through. Something “normal” for a little kid like a fever (kids get sick, after all) is something that requires close monitoring for her. Check out their blog, see what life is like for a little girl with cancer. And please consider giving a gift to help support her and all the others who have to fight this dreaded disease.

  316. Jason March 5, 2009 10:55 pm

The four-semester sequence runs 241-244. There’s also an accelerated sequence 251A-253A, and an applied calc sequence, 215-216 (although I think engineers need to go with 241-244 or 251A-253A).

I had AP Calc credit, so I was credited for 241-242, and then I took 253A to finish that requirement off. I thought I was so brilliant entering my first semester at UH, I’d breeze through 253A like I breezed through AP Calc in high school. Um, that C+ on the first midterm was very humbling … 😀

if we had a clear cut case, or a almost clear cut case, garanz wudda had sum kinda leak already. so readin between da lines, imo gotta cut some kinda deal.

but if you knew me, you’d know dat, jus like Punchy Pilot, yu gotta wash yur hands and make nice nice befo yu give cracks! 😆

and yes, I giggle alot. keeps da rest ah my lifes sane and mo manageable.

    hiya Flyer.

Nalani, great job your son doing at UH! just supah supah!!!

and thank you and your crew from all of us kanaks in da State for being a good role model for us too. 😀

  356. HiFlyer March 6, 2009 3:39 am

BHF2, I think if the UHAD has something on Ebolla he would definitely be gone by now, since he has already stated that he will not resign from his position. I hope that whatever the findings are that the UH will fight this case instead of paying him off like we did with you know who (HF).

  357. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 3:40 am

    Ralph,

okay, you wen suckup to my brightside, so i going giggle jiggle wit yu. 😀

i tink no mo clear cut case cuz UH askin one young lady fo squeal on da coach, and we all know from experience dat da whistle blower fallout not good no matta da cause. tough to put her on da spot, and makes it the more reason why sooO many ah us tink dis guy is a jerk for putting the girls through his crapooloa. if had mo witnesses, ok.

but i also think gotta be mo like Al and Garrett and Momo. stay cool, because when you get emotional sumtimez yu luuz da perspective an yu fight to da debt. den yu all pew an wat yu wen accomplish? still a luuza situation.

but da bugga has put us into dat spot so i can understand why so many like fight fight fight! me, i like to jiggle and fight.

  358. Ralph March 6, 2009 3:42 am

I wonder who wrote ebolla’s contract….UH has a legal counsel…used to be Kirimitsu who is now at St. Louis as president….I believe the legal counsel is a political appointee, like former BOR Kitty Lagareta, may not have the it factor to make a difference in an important position at the University.

  359. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 3:42 am

    HiFlyer.

did you see da Quest Crew? dem buggaz are GUUUUUUDDD!

i wuz mentioning to ST last week about dem. wasn’t he a dancer too in da day?

  360. Ralph March 6, 2009 3:45 am

Homey watched the quest crew, but i never heard of them…must be before my time…

  361. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 3:46 am

    Ralph

i wuz tinkin da same ting. but da economy is gonna change da contract writing practice, no doubt about it. but that is forward looking. dealing with the current situation, kinda exasperating for JD to have to go to work and look at a program that is part of his program and know that the guy is dragging down your pants. what a loser!

  362. Ralph March 6, 2009 3:48 am

Wafan it’s about time you get up and shovel the snow off of your drive way….in a couple of hours the kids will be eagerly waiting for you to open your classroom door.

  363. HiFlyer March 6, 2009 3:48 am

Missed the show, to much work last night.

  364. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 3:48 am

they are current stuff. and very good dancing choreography. betta dan da choreography in High Plains Drifter or da Outlaw Josey Wales. 😀

  365. Ralph March 6, 2009 3:54 am

Big Hilo Ferd reported that the player initiated the contact with the UH and other players were interviewed and confirmed the incident…how much of a contact (kick) justifies a case (complaint) for harassment, abuse, or whatever legal jargon to make a case. Same with the first incident, it was the player who approached the UH admin and UH followed after the complaint….

  366. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 3:54 am

try google quest crew. da best mooo wuz at da end ah last week’s show when da guy in da middle jumped up and wuz pushed to da outside ova 2 odda members and day all did da final muuuv togedda. wuz one chicken skin moment.

  367. Ralph March 6, 2009 3:57 am

I saw high plains drifter and outlaw josey wales but I don’t remember any dancing, not even line dancing

  368. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 3:59 am

    Ralph,
you telling me stuff i neva read so i neva no. wuz tinkin day never have playerSS reporting. if you get witnessESS, plural, you got a betta case. gotta have witnesses, right? i mean, its a team so gotta have witnesses. JD prolly like me, tinkin ah da fallout on UH and da team.

  369. Ralph March 6, 2009 4:01 am

found a you tube of quest crew, rainbow dancers are better.

  370. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 4:03 am

High Plains – da punk sherriff and his crew wen shoot at da guy wit da rock, make him dance.

Josey – afta his showdown wit 10 Beers and he got da guy outta da ground, day had da celebration back at da cabin, dancin to Rose ah Alabama…

yu no rememba da good pahtz. sheeshh! 😆

  371. bighilofan2 March 6, 2009 4:05 am

Rainbow Dancers won Paula Abdul contess lass month. so yu right on dat one.
just saying da new Quest Crew video is betta dan da old.

  374. rage777 March 6, 2009 6:28 am

Wow! That is very impressive that a student athlete can be an engineer major. I remember when a volleyball player was majoring in civil engineering, I was impressed with that. But us EE majors tease those CE majors all the time. When I went to UH the Calc classes were 205, 206, 231, and 232 or something like that. Wonder why they changed the numbers?
Nalani, tell Kahai that if he loves electronics and bread boards, the classes will get a lot easier. You also realize that there aren’t too many jobs in Hawaii for an EE major, which is why most of us are on the mainland now.

  375. d1島 March 6, 2009 6:37 am

    Great Morning All!

    chawan_cut,
    You’re right, that was inappropriate.
….I shoulda left it out. Right?

    heheheh

Hmmm…I wonder if the parking office at UH needs some help nowadays? It’s been a while since the UHAD sent some manpower over that way.

    Have a great day erryboddy!

    HiHo….

  376. koakane iphone March 6, 2009 7:05 am
