Malloe: 'My heart will never leave here'
In a tearful announcement, assistant coach Ikaika Malloe confirmed that he has accepted the defensive coordinator’s job at Yale.
“We’re going to miss having what we have here,” said Malloe, a Kamehameha Schools graduate. His wife also was raised in Hawai‘i.
“My heart will always be here,” he added. “My heart will never leave here. … It’s been a dream of mine to not only be a coordinator, but to one day be a head coach. You’ll never know if you’ll get another chance. I don’t want to regret not taking it.”
Malloe and Tom Williams, Yale’s new head coach and a former UH defensive coordinator, were on the same staff at Washington.
Malloe said he will work at UH through the recruiting period.
“I wish him well,” UH head coach Greg McMackin said. “He’s done everything the right away. He helped us through our first year, our transition year, and he did a good job.”
Malloe coached the defensive tackles and special teams.

Kimo Makaula Sr. said his son indeed has de-committed, and will accept a scholarship from Washington. He said it was a tough decision, but one agreed upon by the family. Let’s wish him the best.

Super Games II, the non-traditional competition among teams of UH football players, starts Feb. 4.
Last year’s events included tug-o-war, no-rules basketball and a visually unique exercise in which a player had to contort into a human chair.

LB is visiting UH this weekend, which surprises me because I thought that UH was pretty full at LB for this recruiting class. He hasn’t received an offer yet from Mac, so I’m guessing he’s a backup recruit for UH. If UH doesn’t make an offer this weekend, the recruit’s only other option is Saint Anselm College.
I think that this recruiting trip is an example of UH’s increased recruiting budget.

Utah named Roderick their co-offensive coordinator…and a few hours later he left them to take the WR job at Washington! Talking about assistant coaching salaries, does a co-offensive coordinator at Utah make less than a WR coach at Washington?

Since when does UH fly in walk-on candidates on official visits? That seems like quite an expense for a walk-on…but maybe the budget has been increased so significantly that potential walk-ons can be flown in and treated to a weekend visit.

It must be difficult for any 18 or 19 year old to commit to anything, much less where they’re going to spend the next 4 or 5 years as a student/athlete.
Are these decommits a result of a different generation?
Is it passe’ where your word was your bond. Or a handshake was your NLI.
Are these decommits following pro sports free agency where you take the best deal and play off one team over another?

This ESPN recruiting blog is a must-check each day for me…lots of good info. The latest news on Tepa is not good…he loved the facilities at Oregon and it appears that it is down to Oregon and UCLA for Tepa. He doesn’t even mention UH or his commit there! At least the ESPN writer mentions UH.

Garret…you should see the facilities they have at Oregon. With Nike founder Phil Knight poured millions into that facility. Some NFL people, including the late Bill Walsh, stated that the Oregon facility put some NFL facilities to shame….just awesome…..
i don’t think commits are dropping like flies because the coaching staff probably knew that those were not firm, so that is why we are getting recruits who wasn’t on the original list. i think the recent recruits appear to be potentially better players for the position the warriors need than some of the early commits.
I know most probably will not feel this way, but one way to maybe defuse this movement towards other D1 teams by our local HS athletes…and that is by peer pressure.
Instead of applauding his intent to attend another college on an ATHLETIC scholarship and saying things like ..”Right on brah!, USC is teh bomb!!”…maybe something along the lines of…”WHAT??!! you going to the mainland to play FB??!! Get UH right here and Brah!…you know they need you and that you would be ROYALTY y0!” or whatever, you get the it right?
Now if they HAD NO offer from UHM and did from another college for an ATHLETIC scholarship, then que sara sara……

I’m with ya on your sentiments. Just add my 2 cents of me feeling that the NCAA looks at UHM as their red-headed step-child and would like nothing better then to have UH not participate…in the meantime, slap them every now and then. Look at the Hawai`i exemption. We basically have no advantage in booking more of the marquee names on past the west-coast on a consistent basis because all D1 teams can now have a 12 game schedule. There was already vocal displeasure about extending the CFB season and then the NCAA screws UH again. Sorry if this was brought up earlier.

lava, don’t know why victorino signed, but know he was in arbitration. maybe he is not a free agent, but maybe next year he will be one, then going cost the phillies or any other team mucho bucks . he may have been better off waiting to see what arbitration will amount to, but then again, he just wanted to make sure he can report to spring training with no hassles.

Early commits are like prom-dates, if a better one comes along, you may get dumped, lol.
That’s why I never get too excited until LOI day. We’ll find out then, that we’ve done a pretty darn good job, regardless of who decomitted or not.
I have full confidence in BigMack that he knows what he’s doing.
Normally, the news about coaches leaving doesn’t get out until *after* NLI day in order to not hurt recruiting. For example, any recruit that Ikaika Malloe was leading the UH efforts on might feel less strongly towards UH if he knew that Coach Malloe wouldn’t be there after NLI day. But the news is out now and I hope that Malloe wasn’t the lead on any of the big recruits for UH.
In years past Hawaii recruits could go unnoticed. And be obscure to the rest of the country. Now, it’s hard to conceal them because of the camps and all star game this past December. This is partly the reason. When mainland coaches saw how the talented Hawaii players fared against the best players in the country it convinces them to go after them with vigilance unlike years passed where they only evaluated Hawaii players by partly looking at the tapes of the Hawaii players playing against the local competition.Now with the all star game it gives the recruiters a better gauge of determining talent. Same thing with the camps. Numbers wise a lot of these athletes had numbers that were off the chart. Compared to other big cities, like Los Angeles, Hawaii’s athlete’s performances at these camps were right up there. And resultingly, word gets around about the numbers these kids are putting up at these camps, and the mainland coaches are taking notice.
A few days ago I wrote encourangingly because in the wake of perhaps missing out on the Cal Poly players, I thought the guys we had like Kimo, Chauncey and Benson were great players (to name a few, and others) that would be big stars for the Hawaii team. They were Hawaii commits and local boys that after looking at film of them I can see how there may be some other team’s recruiters that may be envious and try to persuade them to decommit from Hawaii. I hope, prayfully, there isn’t an avalanche of other decommits. Please don’t let this happen as I look upwardly as I continue typing.
I understand these things happen, and for myself I’m sadden that these at one time commits to our program are decommiting. But ,I hold no grudge towards these athetes. And truly I wish them much success in the future.
But what irks me, and what is the driving force and the purpose of why I’m writing this post is the ingratitude and derision shown from one paticular team’s supporters concerning Hawaii athletes. Wishfully, I would love to punch every single one of them. And also the ones that don’t speak out and condemn the ones that speak with ill will towards Hawaii athletes and recruits.
On the UCLA blog ,I read today, such inflammatory remarks about Hawaii athletes. And I’m angered. For it goes further than condescending, when you read things like in reference to the Kahuku player, Tonga, and the prospect of him going on an LDS mission, one poster writes that he wishes that the program would close the door on recruits going on LDS mission. Another one questioned why are the recruiters wasting their time in Hawaii when San Diego county has better athletes, and mentioning the fact that Hawaii has 0 Heismens (sp) winners and San Diego county has four. Another one says: close the Hawaii pipeline. A few weeks ago, I read a few comments questioning the coaches- why did they recruit a smallish WR from Hawaii (Toma).
I’ve been to many blogs, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Arizona State, USC, Utah, and Boise etc. and I’ve have yet to read anything as bad as what I’ve read at the UCLA site. The fact that such contempt is not challenged by others is bothersome because it needs to be. And I for one, do challenge and condemn the UCLA bloggers talking badly about UH recruits.
Garret, would kimo m have gotten an offer from udub if he did not have an early commit with uh?? would he have gotten any offers from the pac-10. maybe and maybe not, so before going any further, his dad should have said, we want to thank coach mc and uh for recruiting kimo and offering him a scholarship, but we have a change of heart and kimo wants to go to udub. somehow like duffer and (j)j said, people have forgotten about what you say and do is your word.
i’m assuming makaula wasn’t one of the surprises, right ST?

you all know that today, it is very much “en vogue” to have a hawaiian and/or polynesian on your football team these days. if not, alumni, supporters, and the like will question the coach as to why they are not going after the hawaiians/polynesians.
hawaii’s high schools have been purged for years by many a mainland coach. some of the early noticeable ones was duffy dougherty of michigan state. it has been long known the hawaii football players “play tough”. every coach wants that kind of player. so it is not a new thing.
in the past we have struggled to compete for the top local boys because of our inept programs. however, much has changed in the past three decades. a lot of our successes can be attributed to the local boys who did stay home to make a difference.
however, now, it is hard for a local with potential to go unnoticed by all levels of football programs.
for the past decade, our staff pretty much fell asleep when it came to recruiting the local boys. now, we have arisen to the task.
small steps, i tell you, small steps. we apparently will secure a good number of local boys this year. hopefully, this will create a new trend for which we can build a new legacy.
so if a kimo makaula leaves, he leaves, let em go. there are many others who are willing to make a difference for his state of hawaii. these young men will be forever revered in our hearts.

I said on this blog last week that UW was humping hard on our recruits, with the promise of the Pac 10 and all that has to offer…. such is life. Interesting that Makaula is projected as a DE with little or none experience off of the edge, but time will tell. don’t hold your breath, i hear there is more fall out to come in the days ahead, time to go to the contingency plans……always have a back up.

Good news about David Veikune at the Senior Bowl. The practices are more important than the game for the Senior Bowl players, so this report could indicate that his draft stock has risen significantly. At least there is some good football news today.

I think that Makaula would have gotten the offer from U-Dub whether or not he committed to UH…the fact that UH offered him a scholarship was probably the independent verification that U-Dub looked for about his ability. It is easier to recruit an uncommitted player than someone who was said to be a “solid commit”, so his commitment to UH would discourage many schools.
I do agree with you that his Dad could have explained his decision better. There is a way to make the new school feel good without putting down the school being dumpted.

until the close of business on feb 4th, nothing means nothing. there is no code of honor with coaches, believe me…..too many are more worried about job security and w’s, than anything else….do you blame them?
the story of the student athlete is lost in the hustle and bustle of recruiting…it is a constant battle to secure the players you want, and if you’re a student athlete who is not getting any interest, you need to get on the phone, send your videos out and follow up with the coaches. it can be done.
even after LOI, there is still a TON of recruiting that goes on…..people have to graduate, they have to qualify, they have to meet their end of the deal for anything to happen……LOI is more of a big media day mandated by the NCAA
JMO, Kimo M is a big loss…move on…MAC aint on my top 60 list of DIA head coaches but he and his staff are perhaps the best recruiters Hawaii has seen at Manoa…on the field is a different matter….as for Ikaika–he wont be raiding the cupboard of island talent anytime soon if as he has told (some) friends–he is headed for New Haven.

Sarkisian is getting a very late start on recruiting. It’s not surprising he would target UH’s top recruits, he can always dangle the Pac-10/BCS carrot to them. UW was so bad last year that Sarkisian can sell the chance to come in and compete for a starting position immediately.

I just got back online and was about to answer your question…but momotaro at #194 basically said what I was going to say. U-Dub isn’t only going after UH’s commits…but they have the advantage of Pac 10 over WAC, playing time, facilities, being part of the new coach’s first class, etc.
Recruiting is *not* personal. Sarkisian needs to win and to do that he needs the best players he can get in a short period of time…so he’s got to go after the best recruits from schools that he has some advantages over. If you honestly think that a coach could recruit as a vendetta against any other school, you are reading too much into things.

The advantages U-Dub has over UH obviously worked for Sarkisian for Makaula, just like how other Pac-10 schools were able to swoop in on other players that UH has been recruiting for far longer. UH also has a lot of commits, so they have more to go after.
ST showed once again how he won’t stop until he gets the story. First, he talked with Malloe and got a denial, but then he got Mac to reveal the change and then Malloe had to admit he took the Yale job. That was a quick resolution, all played out in today’s blog.

About the volleyball issue, I don’t see how UH could appeal the title being taken away. UH put HF in charge of the appeal process, and as AD he had the power to decide things on behalf of the University. So, this is the problem now:
1. HF said that UH violated that pro rule…that is the equivalent of pleading guilty in a criminal trial.
2. HF said that UH accepted the title being taken away…that is the equivalent of accepting a plea bargain or accepting the punishment by the court.
3. HF said that the issue was now being put behind UH, that it was settled. That is the equivalent of saying that UH was giving up all future appeals. In fact, HF *did* say that UH was not going to make any more appeals.
So, after all of that was said by UH, how does UH appeal to the NCAA? UH could try to say that the person in charge at the time made a mistake or was incompetent…but he was the person UH put in charge and UH even gave a contract extension to him a few years after he decided to give up on the appeals.
Like I said the other night you first brought this up, I don’t see how UH can appeal HF’s actions. To me, the problem is *not* the NCAA…the problem is that your “favorite” AD decided the men’s volleyball title wasn’t worth fighting for.

I told one of the coaches that it’s bearable for UH to lose a recruit to Washington or UCLA.
But I can’t imagine it plays well on the other side. I mean, UCLA should be competing against USC for players. Can you see UCLA telling its alumni: Hey, fist-bumps all around! We beat UH on a recruit!

For players like Tepa they can point to the number of stars. Plus, UCLA’s recruiting is fragmented this year because Walker left, which gives them an excuse this year.

San Diego is a great place to live, but San Diego State really isn’t a great place for a football player. No fan base, student apathy (though they probably get as many students at their games than UH gets at Aloha Stadium), horrible coaching turnover, etc. However, SDSU has hired a pretty impressive coaching staff, so they have a chance now.
If this coaching staff succeeds, SDSU will rise again and have a huge recruiting base to go after. If they don’t win in 2 years, I can’t see SDSU being able to stay in D-IA for football.

My point is that the NCAA, based on a complaint one year after UH won the title, amended the “pro rule” and went back 5 years to make if effective.
UH, unfortunately, placed the wrong person in charge who “admitted” that UH violated the “pro-rule” when the language did not exist at the time UH recruited Costas.
What I disagree with is that the NCAA amended the rule more than a year after the fact and made it retroactive with an effective date of 5 years before the fact.
Then, explain why the NCAA allowed BYU to retain its title and banner when they did the same thing ( using players who played with pro-athletes ) as UH. Also, why did the NCAA strip Lewis State of the title for the same reason? Seems like a total double standard of applying the same rule.
Further, why does the NCAA not go after the schools where their VB players (USA nationals) played in games with “pro” players in pick-up games or for charity? Is it discriminating against international players? Like, who gives a shit about them!!!
Its no wonder that many conutries look at the USA and say why don’t you clean up your own mis-deeds against your your people before telling us that we need to treat our people equally.
Like Garret, I don’t think UW is targeting UH specifically, but is looking to flip top recruits away from non-BCS schools. Sarkisian probably is also looking to establish recruiting ties to Hawaii for future classes.

BSU, Utah, and TCU have a lot better facilities than UH. They also are probably closer geographically to their recruits than UH is to the mainland recruits. TCU has a *very* impressive commit list right now (better than more than half of the Big 12 teams), and other BCS schools (mainly Big 12 schools) are openly trying to steal their recruits.
I thought that Tepa already had 3 stars? With the awards he has won and the stats he had last season, he deserves an upgrade to 4 stars…but he already has enough stars to point at for UCLA.
I know the UH coaches are peeved at Makaula because he accepted a U-Dub offer without visiting the school. UH’s point is that it was there from the beginning and, at the least, he should have visited the school before making a decision.
That makes sense.
I really don’t think kids should make any commitment unless they’re sure. People can say verbals aren’t binding, but in a way they are. UH was holding a scholarship for Makaula, a scholie that could have gone to someone else.
Back to the prom analogy. Yes, an acceptance isn’t binding, but if a guy rents the suit and the limo, he’s expecting a date.
Then again, I’m sure Nevada feels the same way about David Graves.

I *do* agree with you about how the NCAA amended their rule and retroactively applied it. However, the problem for UH now is that HF accepted that and declared that UH wouldn’t be appealing anymore! That is what I’ve been trying to point out to you…it would have been interesting to contest the NCAA’s retroactive application of the rule, but it had to be done back then and HF did not seem to try very hard to fight for the volleyball team. Now it is too late because UH officially declared it accepted the NCAA’s punishment.

I do think that you are looking to much into this, but I will say that if Sark whats to continue recruiting in Hawaii it will get harder and harder each year. I think once Coach Mac gets his foot set in Hawaii, I don’t thing very much schools will be able to come in and take our best.
The cool thing about Malloe is he called the three guys he recruited and told them he was leaving, just in case it made a difference. The three remain committed.

Yes, UH paid the expenses to bring in Graves on an official recruiting trip even though he was committed to Nevada for quite some time. I don’t see UH fans (except roysan16) speaking out against that…I guess it is only bad when other schools do that to UH commits.
Nevada could have gone after many other QBs, but they thought they had Graves so they did not.

Actually, I don’t think a flag or a trophy makes a difference.
You can’t replace the memory.
I was at that UH-Pepperdine match, and it was just an amazing experience. I can still see Costas jumping around, and then the UH players taking pieces of the floor as souvenirs. And then going into the locker room and seeing Tony Ching in tears, emotionally spent from the chase.
The next day I saw Pepperdine coach Marv Dunphy at the airport. He knew UH was the better team, and he had no complaints.
Costas was a great player not because he was a member of a team that had pros. He was great because he worked his okole off every day in practice while still maintaining good grades in business.
JJ said a lot of strange things, but what I’ll remember — and this applies to UH volleyball — is that in time you don’t remember scores, you remember teammates and special moments.
I don’t really follow UW recruiting but it looks like they flipped a DB from Boise. I’d imagine there will be more in the coming weeks, Sarkisian just got hired and he’s barely had time to put together his own staff.

Hey ST, I saw page B7 in yesterday’s Advertiser and it was awesome.
I met Sarkisian a few times.
We were at BYU, interviewing Norm Chow.
Chow told Sarkisian to fetch sodas for me and Ferd.
Every now and then, Ferd says: “Can you believe he was the guy who got us drinks?”
But, you know, he was a cool guy. Very humble, but excitable.
I’m going to stop discussing certain issues (like the volleyball title) because I think I’m writing too much about it. I’ve complained in the past about a lot of things the NCAA does, which is why sometimes I try to point out when I think things aren’t the NCAA’s fault. I’ll try to just let those things slide from now on, unless I’m at a Cattle Call and can say what I really think about some issues!
I’m probably going to be blogging a lot less soon anyway because I have a big contract about to start. It has been nice to have a little time to catch my breath between contracts, and I wouldn’t mind if this break lasted until after NLI day, but it sounds like things will start much sooner than that.

A-House: I don’t think it’s personal — I just think that Sarkisian wants to tap into the Hawai‘i pipeline, and so he has to go after Hawai‘i players. For the most part, Hawai‘i players are either going to UH or big-name Mainland schools that they compete against anyways, and so Sarkisian’s best shot is to go after the UH guys.

I understand the point you are trying to make but I think what hurt’s is he is a local boy and when we get local boys to stay and last minute they decide to do this. This is the same thing that the Perry kid did and do you think people in the no have forgotten what he did. I don’t think so.

Also, there’s always the possibility that Makaula can flip back. His verbal to UW is as non-binding as his verbal to UH.
i still say that the ncaa should ammend the recruiting rules and regulations to allow for an early signing period that is binding, complete with a letter of intent. this could be something like may to september of each year.
if the intentions of the ncaa is to reduce the blatant spending on redruiting and to reduce the amount of harassment on student/athletes then this could accomplish both.

I had referred to a November milestone for my company and I never got to tell you about what happened. I got my work done and exceeded what we promised our customer, which is why my company got some good attention at the November conference (MILCOM) and got an article in the current issue of National Defense Magazine.
My co-founder was sure that his stuff would be done by November so that we could show it off at MILCOM and we had offers for our company contingent on his stuff and my stuff working. Unfortunately, his stuff wasn’t done in time…and it still isn’t done. He’s had other stuff going on in his life so the “1 or 2 months” of work he had since last July still hasn’t been done as of today. If I knew that was going to happen, I probably would have taken the offer for the company 6 months ago.
Anyway, my company is doing fine but we missed the optimal window to sell so we won’t be selling for awhile.

The contract is nice, but November would have been much, much nicer if things had gone as planned.
Actually as I have stated before recruiting athletes whom have verbed is easier becz the field of competition has been reduced and recruiters can focus on a particular rival school. Especially a program such as UDUB which has a lot to offer over midmajor Hawaii.
Hawaii did a good job in their initial push but their grip was not firm, even in our backyard–Im surprised some of our prized mainland recruits havent decommited yet–we dont have the long arm.
Penn State is one of the best at it and their bird dog has been named recruiter of the year at least once.

Sarkisian was making $700,000 as USC’s offensive coordinator before being hired as UW’s head coach.
You might want to sit down before you find out how much Norm Chow is making as UCLA’s offensive coordinator. Most of it is being paid by the Tennessee Titans.
One last thing before I go to sleep…I probably have a different perspective on the U-Dub vs. UH thing with Makaula because I’ve been to Seattle 5 or 6 times. My sister went to UH for 2 years and then U-Dub for the rest of her accounting degree. From her perspective, the education at Washington was worth the extra expense and the hassle of transferring. She has done quite well at work (first in Seattle and then in Hawaii) since she got her degree. Her husband is from Maui but they met at U-Dub and he’s done very well in his career also.

why, if all the early verbal commits stayed true to their word we would have nothing to discuss at the moment.
recruiting is a major tool to help insure our team or any team remains competitive. i have no problems with every school giving it’s best shot at a recruit even tho he/she has verbally committed. no binding contract was signed and no blood affixed to the paper. main thing to remember with recruits, give it your best shot, if he/she does not sign, wish them well and no look back. if they sign, love em and show them what aloha is all about. irregardless, treat the recruits like how you want to be treated. in kimo’s case let him go and find another player or hold the scholie for a future player.

at first, whenever we have local boys turn 180 degrees on us there is a feeling of anger. because we are such hardcore warrior fans, we take it personally. after all most of us have been bred to keep our word.

When I hear about BCS schools exploiting mid major schools with pay for their assistant coaches, because of the money disparity, I think lawsuit and Congress inquiry.
I also think that Makaula changing his mind in the manner that he has is a good thing for our puritan coaching staff.. it will make our coaches smarter, work harder, stay committed to the goal: a top quality program. also, it gets my blood boiling.
back in the day, when duffy was getting Hawaii’s best to go to Mich St., UH was playing Marines Camp Pendelton, San Diego St., etc. our band had 2 tubas, and da cheerleaders weren’t winning any Paula Abdul contests. we’ve come a long way since those days. we’ve got a long more ways to go.
coaches, suck it up and present yourselves and UH in a very positive way to our commits, point to the schedules coming, and do a great job with what we got now. I don’t want to hear about “we’re rebuilding.” show me. i’ve got a list of the commits we had 2 weeks ago. lets see what you show up with on 2/4.

first, good morning. in the past, we scheduled top teams to compete against. USC, Wash, Wash St., OSU, Oregon, Alabama, Florida. Nebraska, Notre Dame. Sometimes we got killed. Sometimes we had hope. Once in a great while, we won.
I do understand the logic of playing Central Arkansas for the first game.
But is that good for our program, to build a top tier program? Does that kind of scheduling help load the coach’s tool box for recruiting?
c’mon Jim, schedule schools we can be proud to compete against before the game begins. dreams of glory start now.

Barry M reminded the listeners that dennis mcknight was also the OL coach of the offensive line that got kicked around in the sugarbowl. I don’t know if the last remark was a subtle hint of a non endorsement of mcknight coming back personally i rather have a new blood coming in.

but the best moves Hawaii can make is getting dat Language (Rosetta Stone) class on TV in da high schools. da second language requirement slows many a good player and forces them to think about a JUCO.

Why did Markovitz (Sp?) say that UH never tried to recruit Maiava?? I believe that he was approached, but already made it known that he was going to the mainland, so UH backed off, as what was JJ’s recruiting policy with local players.
Thats the kind of stuff that needs to be cleared up because if its spoken in a public forum, it will be considered the “Truth”

C. Stuz should be like ST coach…he has the passion I feel that would be great for the ST….he can moonlight with receivers every now and then. Ron Lee should take up coaching the receivers again….he did a good job, albiet the past WR’s were skilled out of HS and had a crazy work ethic.
If Dennis McKnight really is going to be brought back, it should be as special teams coach; not OL coach.
On Maiava, he was on AM1500 yesterday talking about the E-W Shrine game. They asked him about which decals from other teams he had. He said definitely PAC-10 team and other tough teams he respected like Texas.
Was asked about a Hawaii sticker and his reply was “NOPE”. Asked how come and he said “UH never recruited me” so he was NOT going to put an “H” on his helmet. Maiava was emphatic about this and confirms that Markowitz (sp?) was right, re: XxFaithxX #334. Straight from the “horses mouth”, UH DID NOT recruit Maiava.
Same as they did not recruit Tatupu, even though he wanted to come here after leaving Maine. How good was he, he is the starting MLB for the Seattle Seahawks.

you’re right…that’s why this year GM went ‘all out’ to get local recruits. my fear is that we need balance or we’ll revert to Coach Price and the Hula T….we need skilled people in skilled positions and i’ll leave it at that with no reference to jimmy the greek and the termination of his employment with CBS

i think athletes get caught up in the moment and regret what they say sometimes. they read literature and watch video teaching them of how to rep presenting themselves favorable in public. they are constantly reminded. even colt last year going to the media about the facilities was wrong as far as far as what you are taught of always putting your school in the favorable light

Sarkisian is an ambitious man. He is striking while he is hot. I hope the local recruits realize he may not be there long. He considers UW a stepping stone on his way to larger, greener pastures. Leave Maiava and Tatupu alone. Maiava will be taking over for Rey “The Beast” Maualuga (top 5 pick in this years NFL draft) come next year, and nothing more needs to be said about Tatupu and who he is – his record, not sissy words, speak volumes about who he is and what he can do. Maiava is still a young man and he is speaking as young do at this age.
UH coaches do not recruit young men like Maiava and Tatupu because UH coaches are not winners. Until UH hires coaches who are not afraid of dominant Samoans and Tongans, the UH will continue to lose the best that Hawaii has to offer.
Is it any mystery to anyone here why the president of SHOPO (a male dominated, macho organization) is Samoan, why the mayor of Honolulu is Samoan, why so many command sergeant majors in the military are Samoan, why so many drill sergeants in the military are Samoan, why football in the islands is dominated by Samoans?
All dogs, and most human males, are pack animals. Nothing makes a dog more uncomfortable than not knowing where it stands relative to all the other dogs in the pack. Dogs in a pack want order, they want to establish early who is the Alpha Male. Once this issue is decided, the pack settles in and starts to follow the lead of the Alpha. The problem with the UH is that the UH does not have an Alpha Male. The rest of the pack – coaches and players – understand this. This is why the coaching staff and the team has not gelled behind the appointed Alpha Male placeholder know as Mack.
David Tanuvasa, the winningest coach in McKinley High School football history and a current vice principal some where in Hawaii, is the kind of Alpha Male the UH needs to lead the team. He is bright and talented, is highly educated, has a winning record after 10 seasons as head coach of McKinley, and would be the kind of person the UH needs to have at the head of the pack.
JJ understood this about the animal world, of which we are all a part. This is why he was able to command the respect of the pack. Niners head coach understands this too. The players there and under JJ understood this too.
