Veikune invited to Senior Bowl

David Veikune has been invited to play in the Jan. 24 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. By accepting, he had to drop out of the East West Shrine Game in Houston. He joins long-snapper Jake Ingram, who received a Senior Bowl  invitation the past week. Veikune projects to play defensive end in a 4-3 alignment or outside linebacker in a 3-4.

* * *

Word on the street is that Ray Hisatake is moving back to offensive tackle. He was there in spring ball, but during the first week of training camp, he moved to guard. UH is seeking a successor to right tackle Keoni Steinhoff. Brett Leonard, a JC transfer, is enrolled in school and will compete at tackle.

Leonard, Lacount, Hisatake, Kia, Letuli, Johnson, and Thomas, will all compete at tackle. I wonder if maybe Letuli should stay at guard? Well we’ll see what happens during the off season. I think it depends a lot on what kind of offseason Letuli has.

    d1,

If my mind serves me right, many years ago there were 2 post-bowl
games. Hula and Shrine. Senior came later. Hula was the better of
the 2 because in HAWAII ( a special place ). 3 bowls were OK at
the time until NFL endorsed the Senior Bowl. Then the pecking order
started. In the last few years, many of the invitations were declined by
players for various reasons and filled with UH seniors. Something had
to give. This is what we have now. Two is good. Competition would be
greater if only seniors could apply for the draft.

Been thinking…always dangerous heheh.., that while I feel that the o-line coaching was lacking this season, this influx/desire to recruit more OT’s does prove true that we DID NOT have the talent that we needed nor have ATM to run the R&S as intended.

This up-coming season (And off-season) will make or break B. Smith and the Warrior offense/coaches for the next couple of years. If they can get it together on the o-line, we have enough returning O players that I feel can gain back the respect that JJ garnered for the offense when he was here…minus the infamous Sugar Bowl.

  32. labrat January 10, 2009 10:46 am

UH has a lot of interior oline types. The quest is to find the freaks that can play OT. It takes a freak to counter a freak. I like Hisatake’s move to the outside. I was hoping that they would move Kia to the inside. It may help him with those false start penalties.

If we want to be truly fair to the coaches and the team, we must take 2009 as the first real season to assess where we are as a program.

Last year way too much was out of wack and off kilter to competently judge anything correctly.

In my mind, 2009 will be year one, last year I’ll write off as transition. I fully expect much better performances from everybody, how that will translate into wins and losses remains to be seen, but this year, we’ll be fully in every game and we’ll only lose to better teams, not because of our own failures.

There, I’ve said it and I’m sticking to it.

Smith was sent home Monday and suspended for the Allstate Sugar Bowl following an investigation by Alabama into improper dealings with an agent. The Alabama state attorney general also plans to look into the matter.

Saban confirmed that Mike Johnson would fill in for Smith at left tackle against Utah and David Ross would move into the starting lineup at left guard.

    Jason,
    You recall correctly.

Which bolsters the argument that a Guard-type would have a hard time playing in space…

I hope the Oline guys are working hard on their strength and agility. Hisatake IMO should have never switched over to the offensive line. Regardless I hope he has learned things quickly and can be a force this year. I still not to high on our Oline until they prove otherwise. If the Oline can come together and be somewhat solid, the offense will have taken another step forward.

    #33 Pride.: December 27th, 2008 at 12:32 pm

Screaming and yelling with today’s athletes only turns them off. I believe that if an athlete is out on the field then he or she is a motivated enough person and doesn’t need to be yelled at in order to perform. Pushed prodded yes but not yelled at. I agree that certain boundaries need to be set to establish discipline however yellers and screamers are not needed.

What the players need are tools to put into their toolbox. They need to add tools and they need a chance to sharpen those tools. Tools come in the form of teaching by coaches in the area of technique and basic fundamentals. Last year’s spring schedule was terrible. We needed an AD, and then we needed a head coach, we needed a coaching staff, and then we needed to recruit. After recruiting we had to put together a spring practice schedule, while getting to know each other as coaches, and then we had to put together offensive, defensive, and special teams schemes. Then we had conditioning, and fall practice, and six long road trips. In the meantime we hired a recruiting coordinator and had to iron out his responsibilities. Then we had problems with the returning QB qualifying for school, and the previous head coach had no one else with extensive playing experience. And did I mention six long road trips?

Find good athletes, give them tools, help them sharpen their tools, put them in position to make plays, and sit back watch and evaluate. Eventually, good recruiting will establish competition. Competition will be your best motivator.

    #39 Pride.: December 27th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

What you tell the potential O-line recruits is that we established an NCAA record for sacks in a season. Competition is wide open for all five starting slots. If you want to play right away, there is no place better than in Hawaii. Then be true to your word and give everyone a chance. Evaluate by atheleticism, and not how well they perform the techniques. You can teach technique. You have a more difficult time teaching quick feet and superior balance. Give the young athletic guys a chance to show their stuff. If they have quick feet and good balance, then teach them how to play.

    #62 Pride.: December 27th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Offensive line problems as I started awhile back started when the short bald headed guy left for Oregon State. It was compounded by poor recruiting at that position of our home state. I disagree with what some posters have said that we need to out-of-state to get good offensive linemen. In my opinion, we need to fight harder to keep the good in-state linemen home. We need to rally the troops and keep them home. We will never win the battle, but we need to be in the battle. We can’t just stand by and idly watch them go to the Pac-10, MWC, and WAC schools out west, or east or whatever. The last staff blew it with local recruiting. This staff will be way better.

    #72 Pride.: December 27th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

    Local offensive line recruits:

2004 – Keoni Steinhoff 6-2 295(walk-on? or recruit? not sure)
    2005 – Aaron Kia 6-4 275
    2006 – Bryson Ginlack 6-3 275
    2007 – John Manu-Olevao 6-3 312
    Levi Legay 6-3 270
    Drew Uperesa 6-2 245
    Clayton Laurel 6-2 270(walk-on?)
    2008 – Tui Tuiasosopo 6-2 300
    Kahai Choy 6-0 275

That’s seven recruits and two walk-ons in five years. That’s why I say that I saw this coming four years ago.

Compare the above to this list:

Loacl boys playing offensive line at other D-1 schools:

Max Unger 6-5 300 Sr. Oregon
Wilder McAndrews 6-4 290 So. Oregon State
Jeremy Perry 6-2 338 Sr. Oregon State
Ryan Pohl 6-3 285 So. Oregon State
Una Smiley 6-6 325 Jr. Oregon State
Tavita Thompson 6-6 308 Sr. Oregon State
Shane Lauvao 6-3 305 Jr. Arizona State
Kai Maiava 6-1 311 So. UCLA
Micah Kia 6-5 297 Jr. UCLA
Abe Markowitz 6-2 280 Fr. USC
Mykenna Ikehara 6-3 305 Fr. Washington
Reed Lesuma 6-3 302 Jr. Washington State
Vaughn Lesuma 6-5 329 Sr. Washington State
Sione Tau 6-5 325 Fr. Colorado
Mike Matamua 6-4 305 Fr. San Diego State
Trask Iosefa 6-1 315 So. San Diego State
Ikaika Aken-Moleta 6-2 305 Jr. San Diego State
    R.J. Willing 6-5 312 Jr. BYU
Tyler Williams 6-1 300 Jr. Utah
Sean Tesoro 6-2 295 Fr. UNLV
Ramsey Feagai 6-2 360 So. UNLV
Sunia Vaitai 6-4 345 Fr. New Mexico State
Steve Lightsy 6-4 370 Jr. San Jose State
Lawaia Naihe 6-2 305 Sr. Weber State

That’s too many guys that we are losing and is partly why we are hurting at that position.

It’s always a pleasure and learning experience to read, and in this case, reread information from a very knowledgeable person. Mahalo Prideperiod 😀 😯 😀

    Good morning everyone!

Whooo hooo … las vegas has just lite the 3rd burner to possibly cook up a FRIDAY NIGHT — Sept. 18, 2009 Las Vegas super Cattle Call! This Cattle Call, if feasible, will allow ALL Tsai-kos and lurkers to meet and party–regardless of where they go on game day!

Will be collecting numbers on the attendance for this one too. A lot of travel arrangements are pending, but please update when possible.

las vegas needs to know the numbers for the tailgate venue and buses. Rich2176 needs to know who and how many tickets are needed. Survey requests for tickets will be turned over to Rich2176 at the end of February.

I will continue to collect requests for an indefinite time via the survey at:
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2b0TEhRn0xTX82JQRdJ2gyQ_3d_3d

If you cannot get into the survey or have subsequent changes, please email me at: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

A summary of the data and plans are posted at:

I was lucky with sports betting in Reno…not so much in Vegas.

When A-Joe, A-sports, and I were walking through the a Fremont St. casino after the last game A-Joe pointed out how quiet it was…no one shouting excitedly about wins even though it was pretty crowded. We agreed then that those places are ‘traps’ compared to other Vegas venues when it comes to slots. I’d like to hear other Tsaiko opinions on that.

The National Football Post discussed the players in the East-West Shrine Game, so their article included 2 Warriors.

David Veikunne: Hawaii (6-3, 250) Projection: 5th Round

A natural athlete with good body control and the suddenness to shed blocks. Lacks the burst to consistently reach the edge, but uses his hands and power well to make his way into the backfield.

Ryan Mouton: Hawaii (5-10, 180) Projection: Free Agent

He has played well this year and displays the deep speed to consistently turn and run with receivers down the field. Lacks polish and gets too “long-legged’ out of his back pedal.

Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh interviewed for the Jets job.

Two days after Jim Harbaugh’s agent told the Mercury News the coach is committed to Stanford and “very close” to signing a three-year contract extension, Harbaugh met with the New York Jets about their coaching vacancy, nationalfootballpost.com reported Friday.

“Yesterday, after meeting with Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm in Phoenix, they met with Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh,” Michael Lombardi wrote. Lombardi, a former Raiders executive, is one founder of the site. Harbaugh’s agent, Jack Bechta, is another.

I’m even more impressed with Percy Harvin now…the NFL scouts will really like the toughness he showed in the BCS title game.

Percy Harvin’s performance in Florida’s 24-14 victory over Oklahoma on Thursday night was one of the most impressive in BCS national championship game history.

Is became even more so on Friday morning when UF coach Urban Meyer admitted that Harvin was suffering from a hairline fracture in his right lower leg in addition to a high ankle sprain.

Meyer said Harvin was playing at about 80 percent, but the 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior still rushed for 122 yards and one touchdown and caught five passes for 49 yards. The 122 rushing yards was the third-most in BCS title game history, trailing only Texas’ Vince Young (200 yards against USC in 2006) and Ohio State’s Chris Wells (146 against LSU in 2008).

“It all goes to the training staff people that helped me prepare to get to the game,” Harvin said. “It was a long shot to get here, and we got here. All the credit goes to them.”

Oregon and Oregon State are considering moving their Civil War game to Thursday to get an additional $300k from ESPN.

University of Oregon athletic officials want to move the 2009 Civil War football game to a Thursday night, and possibly move more games next season to Thursday. The reason: TV money.

If they didn’t move the game to Thursday, Oregon and Oregon State could get squeezed out and miss making $300,000, he said.

De Carolis said Friday that he wasn’t sure if Oregon State was second in the Pacific-10 Conference in TV revenue in 2008. But the Beavers did have their best year ever: about $3.7 million in TV payouts, $1 million more than in 2007, De Carolis said.

TV money has become increasingly important to athletic departments’ bottom lines. Thursday games are attractive to networks and schools because they face less competition from other games than in Saturday’s crowded schedule.

  85. Garret January 10, 2009 1:14 pm

Texas spent $6 million testing their high school athletes over the past 2 years…and only 4 athletes tested positive. They are thinking of cutting out the testing to save money.

By the tens of thousands, Texas student-athletes have been pulled out of class to urinate in a cup for the nation’s largest high school steroids testing program.

Boys and girls in all sports, from football to tennis to cross country, have been randomly selected.

The results so far have found little to confirm fears that steroid use is a rampant problem. When the first 10,000 tests found only four positive results, critics declared the two-year program a waste of time and money.

Now state lawmakers must decide whether to keep the $6 million program chugging along, scale it down or eliminate it. The 2009 legislative session starts Tuesday.

  86. Garret January 10, 2009 1:18 pm

Note that a published report estimated that UH will get between $300,000-$600,000 per year from the ESPN WAC deal. That is for *all* sports, not just football. By moving their football game to Thursday, Oregon and Oregon State can make an additional $300k for that game from TV.

    #273 Pride.: December 15th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

The problems with the 2008 offensive line actually is a very complex one. Our issues actually began in the 2005 season when June Jones appointed Wes Suan as the O-line coach. Again it isn’t Wes’ fault either. Wes was a running back coach for years at Linfield. Jones then had Mouse Davis help Suan. Mouse Davis had his own O-line philosophy and techniques that he established at Portland State.

The O-line during the 2005 an 2006 seasons possessed a few linemen with strong personalities, and leadership qualities. These individuals on their own stuck with what they were taught by their own line coach Cav. It worked out well during those two seasons because the line had a good base foundation that was taught by Cav.

When the 2006 season rolled around, coach McKnight was given the responsibilty by June Jones to whip up the O-line. Two things happened. First, I am not sure what kind of experience that Mcknight had coaching offensive lines. He was a good ball player, but in my opinion lacked experience at coaching the O-line. In time I am sure that he will be a great O-line coach. Luckily he had two Sateles, Esera, Uperesa, and a steady Estes. He was good for one season with the carryover of linemen that learned under coach Cavanaugh.

The problems with steady and good offensive line play started at the start of the 2007 season. The problems were hidden by really great play at the skilled positions, especially at quarterback. McKnight didn’t have the benefit of having Cav built linemen. He now had to deal with players that didn’t have the good base foundation that Cav’s line had. The players now had philosophies that originated from Linfield, Portland State, Drake, the Chargers, Lions, and Eagles.

Brian Smith was brought in this year to shore up the line but now had to start from scratch. Inexperience at the skill positions added to the problems. With the inability to go down the field with the QB’s this year, defenses could just pin their ears back and attack at the point.

Smith’s trying to build the line from the bottom up, but in the process has to have them ready to play games. He’s trying to teach basic fundamentals like A,B, and C, while at the same time trying to get them to play at level X, Y, and Z.

Another factor in the line play could be that Smith’s assistant Zerke hasn’t had the time to catch up with philisophies and style of offensive line play. That can put a strain on the kids if one coach is teaching something but the other coach can’t lend adequate support.

In time, I believe that Smith will be able to catch up and have the troops ready to perform at a high level. This year’s recruiting class will be a big help.

Even with all these problems, Hawaii was five minutes away from being 9 and 4. One minute against San Jose and four minutes against Cincy. Throw in the hiccup against Utah State and we are 10 and 3. What an awesome season if you look at it that way.

    Again … Mahalo to Prideperiod!!!

What was the reason Nash did not want or would not let him play for UH?

    Ostrowski: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri0lE2xMRDI

mens BB REALLY…no, I mean REALLY REALLY needs a PG…offense starts him and the defense too.

Ostrowski wouldn’t be the answer, I would rather have went after Derrick Low instead. No matter though cause until Coach Nash realizes he is hampering this team because of such a stagnant, slow as molasses, predictable offense, it’ll be a very uneventful and boring season for UH Basketball! You could have frikkin Steve Nash on this team and it wouldn’t help any. We don’t have a true point or a pure shooter, but we do have athletic guys who can get up and down the floor. How about running the frikkin court and pushing the ball up the floor Coach?

  135. labrat January 10, 2009 6:54 pm

Good post by pride on oline. I remember watching McKnight running oline going thru drills at the stadium during the spring. I sat close to where oline was so I could see what they were doing. All I can remember is that McKnight sure yelled a lot. After that I went over to watch Reinebold. I liked watching Jeff. He really had the dline fired up.

    Pauoa Boy,

There’s about 20 tons of potential on your lists.

  143. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 7:38 pm

I dunno if I missed anyone or have peeps that are on the list but may not sign but it’s what we got to work with right now for next year. I hope there are a few more surprises upcoming and all the committs sign the LOI.

  144. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 7:42 pm

    FloridaTed,

Howzit, they are in no particular order nor do I know if all these guys are solid yet. But from who is returning, walking on, redhirts, greyshirts, transfers, recruits, this is all who I know of. I’m hoping out of all this we have future All-WAC guys, All Americans, NFL prospects??? Can’t tell yet but there sure is a ton of talent to work with.

  145. roysan16 January 10, 2009 7:49 pm

    PB,

Of the incoming recruits I like QB- Shutter. Saw his tapes and was impressed with how he throws the ball. Poised. Great arm and mobility. And right off, I can see how he looks to be a leader on the field.I think he’ll open the coaches eyes. UCLA commit, WR Toma I saw tapes of him-he’s a very exciting player to watch.Definite playmaker.Seems to play bigger than his size. Reading the UCLA message boards: one I read where someone wrote in that he may be wavering on his decision. Could this be the surprise there talking about?
Of Venu Manu another freshmen recruit at 6’4″ 230 4.6 ( add another 50 lbs.) wouldn’t he be an intriguing prospect if he switched to the OL?

  146. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 7:53 pm

Nice win for the Arizona Cardinals, hope Travis Laboy can heal up for next game!

  147. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 8:01 pm

This year, we seem to have a lot of talent for every position, all the ducks are lining up, from coaching plans, training schedules, camp competition, off-season work outs, it’s all there from the start. All the BS is out of the way.

This year will tell us a whole lot of where we’re going.

  148. letsgowarriors January 10, 2009 8:03 pm

on paper, the talent is there at most positions. however, until they hit the field for a live, full game; it’s all hype. i hope the guys can be more discipline this year and are alreayd working hard to prepare for next season.

  149. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 8:03 pm

Always wanted to know who is that guy on the street who gives the “word’, lol.

  150. labrat January 10, 2009 8:05 pm

Kia, Ieru, LaCount and Fehoku. Looks like Brian Derby linemen camp reunion.

  151. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 8:06 pm

    letsgowarriors,

I think ‘hope’ is a better word than ‘hype’. That’s what we have every year, lots of hope.

  152. labrat January 10, 2009 8:08 pm

I think Libre is trying for another year.

  153. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 8:13 pm

    roysan16,

Howzit, I’ve seen a few of Cayman’s games when I was home in the islands this past year cause I wanted to see Manti Te’o play. He stood out as well as Manti, Toma, Hilliard and Makaula. I thought he was a good QB but not great, sorry just my opinion. I actually think Andrew Manley from Leileihua is better than Cayman. Regardless he is going to be a Warrior and I hope he becomes a great QB for us. Here in SoCal, I’ve seen some good QB’s who are going off to big programs such as USC, etc… I watched Matt Barkley, Richard Brehault, Allan Bridgford, Josh Nunes, and even caught a game of our very own recruit Cory Nielsen. These guys are all going to PAC-10 schools except Cory of course. Boise State and Fresno State each have a Top QB recruit from SoCal too. BS = Joe Southwick, FS = Derek Carr (think he’s David Carr’s Bro)

  154. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 8:13 pm

    letsgowarriors,

Pride’s excellent analysis shed a lot of light on the O-line problems and the deeper reasons for them. It also cleared up most of the ‘perceived’ problems of Brian Smith. Most of these problems will be vastly diminished in 09 and that alone will make a better team.

  155. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 8:16 pm

Derek Carr will have a lot of pressure on him, going to Fresno.

  156. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 8:18 pm

I think by talent alone, Nielson and Graves will be the two best QB’s in camp, alas, talent alone is sometimes not enough.

  157. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 8:20 pm

    labrat,

I don’t think Libre has a chance cause his clock started when he was at Menlo College in 2004 an played. He redshirted in 2005, went to KCC in 2006, and then played 2 years as a walk on at UH in 2007 and 2008.

  158. labrat January 10, 2009 8:25 pm

Someone on another board said he talked to Libre who said his medical reshirt looks good. But I guess we can only hope.

  159. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 8:28 pm

Nielsen for his size has a pretty strong arm and is very mobile in the pocket. He has great vision seeing the field and can get the ball out quick. QB is a position I’m not going to be worried about now that Coach Mack has a firm handle recruiting guys he wants! Plus I think Coach Rolo although I still have some doubts did a pretty decent job with the QB’s this year. Greg played a good second half season of football, Inoke did decent for a few games. I’m sure with the kinks of a year past worked out, Alexander and Rausch will be much better and will run the offense a lot smoother. Coach Ron just needs to open up the playbook and teach these guys to score, score, and score more until the game is done. No such thing as playing conservative to hold a lead, just balls out and beat the crap out of everybody sounds better to me!

  160. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 8:30 pm

    labrat,

I hope so too, well he does have 6yrs. to play 4, so we shall see.

  171. brew808 January 10, 2009 9:15 pm

    Another question:

How can a group of four attend a UH men’s v-ball game, and only spend $19 total for tickets, parking, and refreshments?!? Even if all four somehow “claimed” to be school-kids, what – did they share a single soda? 😯 🙄 😯

  172. wafan January 10, 2009 9:19 pm

    LizK . . .

I learned on New Year’s Day that one need not know the melody to “sing” any of those songs on Guitar Hero.

While visiting my cousin’s home in LA her son-in-law “sang” while my niece played the drums. She impressed me with being able to keep a constant beat — piano for two years. On the other hand, Dave cannot carry a tune in a tarai. Dang. Sounded more like a melodious Sasquatsch — that is how his wife described it. HA! Had to agree.

Anyhow, as Dave said, with these songs does it really matter if you do not know the melody? Just have to follow the red “melody line” at the top. Heck, he could barely do that, either.

  177. jm2375 January 10, 2009 9:41 pm

Brew – a little jealous are we?

    $17 = $8 adult tix + 3 student tix @ $3 each.

Additional $ for parking ($3) and snacks (for them, not me, we ate dinner at Ezogiku prior to the game).

Finally was in the right place to get coupons from the “blimp”. No t-shirt just yet. There’s still time… 🙂

  178. BowsForever January 10, 2009 9:43 pm

Hm. I take it Penn State ended up winning 3-1? Well, better than the performance against USC.

Great analysis on the positions/players, Pauoa Boy. Sure seems like the talent’s there, but can we put it all together? The tremendous number of penalties (I can think of at least one player who got penalized pretty much every week) is a problem, the O-line was generally very porous, and the D was often surprising but not in a good way despite becoming more experienced in the 4-3. I can’t help but wonder how the ’07 Warrior D, who at least seemed to play more inspired, would’ve fared against Notre Dame.

I have to believe Alexander will more or less get the offense down over the offseason, with the coaches teaching him the finer points of sliding, getting rid of the ball if there’s nothing there, making quicker reads, and honing his Inoke-like scrambling instinct. And our receiving corps should improve overall, and if our RBs can stay healthy I think that aspect of the offense should also get better. The rest seems hazy to me, though…

  179. Pauoa Boy January 10, 2009 10:01 pm

    BowsForever,

I think alot of the JC’s that sat out this past year need to have a huge impact this season, especially on defense. The secondary is my biggest concern as everyone is gone… Mouton, Roberts, Dowling, Monteilh, Robinson, Thomas. I think that was pretty much the rotation all year and they were prone to giving up huge plays even with the experience. JoPierre I think is ready to step into a starter role. Jeramy Bryant will most likely fill the void on the other side unless someone else steps up or an incoming JC is ready to go.

The Oline can only get better and I’m sure it will. Estes is a lock, Pepa needs to stay injury free, Kia needs to keep his head in the dayum game, Ginlack, Histake, Ieru are decent. I think Fehoko could come in and start with his experience already. LaCount and Leonard if they are better in person than on paper would help dramatically!

  180. FloridaTed January 10, 2009 10:18 pm

In a strange way I actually like all the unknowns for this season. With as many weaknesses as we’ve had, I’m ready for a few real nice surprises and possible some fresh break-out players.

We have a lot of new young bloods coming in and I wouldn’t mind a few jewels falling out of the bag and give us a good jolt.

  181. BowsForever January 10, 2009 10:19 pm

Wouldn’t it be great if we had another Mouton amongst the JCs. The depleted secondary is definitely a concern…the sooner Coach Mack can establish a more even distribution of freshmen/sophs/juniors/seniors, the better.

  182. Garret January 10, 2009 10:19 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I think that the OL keys for personnel is Pepa being 100% healthy and Hisatake’s development into a solid OT. Hisatake has the physical tools, but was raw when shifted to the OL…hopefully he’ll be ready after the past 2 years of development. I don’t think that Letuli has every had a year where he was 100% for the Spring Practice and Fall Camp…having him healthy will either result in him being a starter or the increased competition will make whoever earns the starting role that much better.

  183. Garret January 10, 2009 10:21 pm

Tepa is the LA Times’ Lineman of the Year. Congratulations to him and I hope that he’s having an awesome time in Hawaii!

In helping Long Beach Poly win its 18th Southern Section championship, defensive end Iuta Tepa proved to be a nonstop tackling machine, running down ballcarriers and pressuring quarterbacks with a level of intensity that inspired teammates and unnerved opponents.

The Times’ lineman of the year recorded 14 sacks and contributed more than 100 tackles for a defense that was considered the best in Southern California.

His skills as a volleyball player could be seen on the football field, whether leaping to deflect a pass or crashing through a blocker to drag down a ballcarrier.

Opponents always tried to know where No. 99 was on the field, but Tepa still found ways to become involved in the play. He was relentless in his pursuit and displayed constant energy, which encouraged teammates to match him in effort.

  184. al ™ January 10, 2009 10:22 pm

    pboy…

my guess is that eventually in two years that david graves will be the qb. he won’t be switching, he is the future.

i can see sula (who no longer has a redshirt) becoming the big back and chizzy running around making the opposition dizzy. no forget libre if granted his 6th year.

  185. Pride. January 10, 2009 10:22 pm

Although we now possess the record for sacks, we need to all remember a few things. Football is the ultimate team game. While I agree that the line sometimes whiffed on the outside and got shoved back up the middle, the QB’s also held the ball too long at times, and the receivers failed to get open at other times. Everyone has a responsibility to do their job. Sacks are evryone’s responsibilty. Line has to block, receivers need to get open, quarterback needs to get rid of the ball, running back needs to hear the line call and block the right man.

Offensive coordinator can also help by keeping the defense honest. What I mean by that is you’ve got to run the ball once in awhile to make sure that the defense knows that they need to defend against the run also and can’t just pin their ears back and go for the quarterback.

When you’ve got those speed rush specialists on the outside, it’s usually a mismatch. You’ve got a three-hundred pound tackle trying to back pedal and block a two-hundred-fifty pound speedster who’s sprinting upfield. That’s a mismatch.

As a defensive coordinator I need to make a decision, do I put in a speed guy at defensive end to rush the QB, or do I put in a strong stout guy to stop the run. You can’t have both. What you’ll get is a guy who can usually do both to varying degrees. Most defensive ends will be better at one or the other, but not both. Vary rarely do you get a guy who will be great at both. Those guys are usually work on Sundays.

Most of the DE’s that Hawaii faces are speed guys who are trying to shake up our quarterback. What we all need to understand is that blocking these guys is really not an easy thing to do. That’s why left tackles in the NFL are among the highest paid players in the game.

Yes of course our tackles do need to be athletic with great balance and quick feet. They also have to be technically very sound. But they still need help. The way to help them is to slow down that speed rusher. How? Run right at him. Pound on him, pound on him, and pound on him some more. You hit him straight on with your tackle, you trap him with your backside guard, you seal him inside with a slot, you run a screen to the area that he vacted when he rushes the quarterback. Pounding a speed guy is the only way to slow him down.

You can also run that inside shovel pass, where you don’t even have to block the end, because he take himself out of the play with that hard upfield rush. Tackle takes a an “influence” step to pretend like he’s trying to block the end and then seals down inside on the Mac or Mike, block the center on the backside defensive tackle and pull the backside guard to kickout the playside Sam or Will. Send the slot and wideout hard upfield in a pass pattern to occupy the safety and corner respectively.

Sugar Bowl would have been a different story with that “one” play. I don’t care how fast their defense was.

  186. Garret January 10, 2009 10:24 pm

There are some bad rumblings going on in Miami. When Samson was drafted Miami had more of a wide-open offense, where his quickness and pass blocking ability were important. However, the new management brought in a power running game and that isn’t his strength.

There’s sentiment inside the Dolphins that they need a bigger center than Samson Satele (295-300 pounds), and a Satele trade wouldn’t surprise anyone. If Miami moves him to right guard, it would create an intriguing battle among Satele, Donald Thomas (who will be ready for minicamp) and underdog Andy Alleman.

  187. Garret January 10, 2009 10:29 pm

    pride,

That was well said. I’d like to add that the WRs need to recognize the blitz quicker and cut their routes short or adjust to get open for a pass quicker. There were times that the QB held the ball too long and there were times that the WRs weren’t adjusting quick enough (or at all)…but all the fan might see is the QB being sacked and they might feel that it is all the OL’s fault.

The whole offense should be quicker next season, which will make the OL look better automatically. There are improvements that need to be made–but, like I said during the season, continuity and chemistry are important for the OL and all the injuries forced a lot of shuffling around there.

  188. al ™ January 10, 2009 10:31 pm

pboy….agree with your wr assesment. although one will be an academic casualty. my breakout guys are rodney bradley and ryan henry. expect great things from blount and taylor as well.

oline, yup. 10-4 on that too. no forget the surprise.

dline….scary thought how thin that we are. hafoka will be the next sopoaga and will make millions too.

  189. BowsForever January 10, 2009 10:31 pm

The funny thing about the D is, it really didn’t do too badly if you only look at certain NCAA statistics. Oftentimes I thought the D just couldn’t get enough pressure on the QB, but lo and behold they actually ranked 23rd in sacks (of course, Veikune had a lot to do with it). Same with 3rd down situations…I would scream at the radio about a 3rd-and-long that the D seemed to “give away”, but they ended up 24th in the nation. I guess one big problem was that the D wasn’t quite as clutch as the ’07 edition, which partly explains why they ultimately ended the season 62nd in total defense (granted, with a much tougher schedule).

  190. Garret January 10, 2009 10:34 pm

The shovel pass was much less effective in 2007 after Nate did such an awesome job with it in 2006, as the new RBs in 2007 weren’t on the same page with Colt. Plus, the defenses adjusted to the threat and the WRs Colt had made throwing to the RB less important.

The shovel pass was even less effective in 2008, with deflections and interceptions early in the season. The coaches adjusted as the season went on to at least reduce the turnovers on the play, but they definitely need some work on the shovel pass in Spring Practice. I hope that they avoid spending a week or two on having the QB under center (which provides a lot of other options for dealing with the pass rush) and work on core plays like the shovel pass and WR screen until those plays are second nature to the QBs, RBs, and WRs.

    al,

Maybe, but when I was in Sacramento, I didn’t hear much about Graves coming out of Folsom High. He was overshadowed by some bigger name guys in the Area. I hope there is a pipeline in the SacTown area cause they got some ballers. Grant High always has a couple of D1 caliber players every year. When I was recruiting in that area, there were a couple names I still remember who I had a chance to talk to over the phone that mentioned they were going away to play ball. Ryan Anderson – played BBall for Cal currently in the NBA. Dallin Rodgers – Playing Football for University of Utah. James Montgomery – played football at Cal transferred to Washington State, will be a threat when we play WSU this year.

    BowsForever,

If the D stops the O on 99 out of 100 situations with 3rd-and-long, all us fans will remember is the one time the other team converted! The 3rd down conversion stat is a much better barometer of the situation than relying on memory…at least in my case!

  194. BowsForever January 10, 2009 10:37 pm

After this season, I almost want the shovel pass abolished. Or at least, incorporated into something different, like the Pistol formation that JJ ran for the first time in ’07, and with a good deal of success. I remember hearing a little while back that LWJ might do much better in the Pistol.

  195. Garret January 10, 2009 10:40 pm

    BowsForever,

LWJ did a *great* job in the game that UH used the pistol offense in 2007…and he hasn’t come close to that production ever since. That formation seemed to suit him better, letting him run downhill like he was back in the I formation.

Irvine family bought a box of crackers from the Whole Foods store in Tustin…and found $10,000 in cash inside! They gave the money back and it turns out an elderly woman had stored her life savings in the box and then accidentally returned the cracker box! Normally Whole Foods would have sent the box to a composting facility, but some worker messed up and the box went back to the store shelves so the money was not lost! This report mentions how the family that turned in the money didn’t get a thank you from the elderly woman or from the store–they didn’t even get a replacement box of crackers until they asked for one a couple of weeks later!

When the news got out about what that family had did, all the TV networks wanted interviews…which the family declined. It is nice that the elderly woman’s family at least left a voicemail for them. The company that makes those crackers donated $10,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County at the family’s request, which is just awesome:

A 6-year-old’s pants were sagging because he didn’t wear a belt to school that day. When someone helped him pull up his pants, a *loaded gun* fell out of his pants! He found it in the trunk of his Dad’s car and brought it to show off at school. It turns out the gun was stolen and when police searched his home, they found a lot more stolen items. So, the first grader is expelled from school and his Dad has been arrested.

BusinessWeek has an interesting analysis that seems to indicate that we should only see modest price increases for gas in 2009. Of course, political events could cause the price to skyrocket, but other than that it looks like supply can meet or exceed demand.

Garret, I think you know what I mean. The D really did seem less “clutch” than last year’s, and the 7-7 record does say something, struggling offense aside. Memory isn’t reliable, sure, but note that the NCAA doesn’t have “3rd-and-long efficiency” stats. Also, Hawaii generally had a better run defense than a pass defense this season. I’m hardly the best reader of tea leaves out there, but I came away with the impression that while the D had good 3rd down defense, it didn’t always have it when it really counted.

I don’t think Jack Sula burned his redshirt year. He was binded by LOI contract to BSU but never enrolled there. So with that being said he still should have all his years to play and should be able to redshirt. His clock hasn’t started if he hasn’t enrolled into college yet.

    well, it was proven tonight.

  213. roysan16 January 11, 2009 1:17 am

I was just laying in bed thinking, and the one thing I remember differently this year compared to when colt and timmy were QBs was the *spot pass*.You remember how they would throw and time the pass to the receivers. And how the ball would be in flight before the reciever makes his break. definition-
A pass directed to a predetermined place on a playing area so that the receiving player arrives at the same time as the pass.

usually I remember cb and tc throwing out into the flats. and sometimes straight down the field.

i can visualize that the ability of the QB doing this type of pass against a strong pass rush would allow him to get rid of the ball sooner thus avoiding some sacks. and cb and tc were seasoned to throw the spot pass. Does anyone else notice that the spot pass was missing this year? And can you see how if the QB throws to a spot instead waiting for the receiver to get there that the spot pass saves time from a strong rush.

“It (playing a national championship pick on the road in front of a huge and hostile crowd), isn’t anything we want to do,” Donovan said the other day. “It could happen if somebody takes off and has a great season. But it won’t be because we want it to.”

I guess that UH won’t be trying to schedule home-and-home games with teams like Florida or USC in the future.

  217. Garret January 11, 2009 5:53 am

    BowsForever,

I understand what you are saying in #201. There were problems with the D, specifically the secondary, in a number of games this past season. The Utah State game comes to mind as the biggest example of what you were talking about.

The weird thing was that the secondary was very experienced and almost all of them had played in Mac’s system in 2007. Anyway, the coaching staff will fix the problems–I trust Mac to make sure the D is solid.

  223. mctruck January 11, 2009 8:15 am

So, is this “wild-cat” formation a version of the pistol, o-what??

  224. Jason January 11, 2009 8:15 am

You know, about the shovel pass … Everyone says part of the drop-off in its success was due to losing Nate, and I think that’s true. But don’t ignore the fact that, as Pride has mentioned before, we lost all of our Cav-coached linemen, too. Can’t run a shovel pass if the linemen (1) can’t sell the fake, and (2) can’t sustain blocks in space.

It’s a great play when executed correctly. I felt the shovel pass was a key play in the Cincinnati comeback — we started to come back when our shovels and screens forced Cincy to change their pass rush scheme. Then when we fell behind, we struggled because time was against us, and we couldn’t run those plays with any legitimacy; Cincy knew we had to go down the field.

  225. Jason January 11, 2009 8:23 am

mctruck: No, no. The Pistol is just a shotgun formation, but the QB is lined up a little bit closer to the center (3-4 yds away), with the running back a few yards behind the QB (instead of to the side).

As for the Wildcat … better to watch it here:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80b1831e

  226. mctruck January 11, 2009 8:23 am

Tell you what; it really got my attention lately when the QB is replaced by a running back or whomever to take the snap from center….all kinds of fireworks then. Very exciting!!

  227. Pauoa Boy January 11, 2009 8:28 am

    wafan,

No problem, I just was looking ahead to see what we have to work with for next season. I know there are still a few names I may have left out that are either still being recruited or are going to walk on. Quentin Beaver I believe has been working hard to get his weight down and will probably join the team later. I heard a punter was walking on and a few guys who got cut last year are trying to come back. The roster should fill out I’m sure before camp starts.

  228. mctruck January 11, 2009 8:31 am

    jason,

    appreciate that, thanks bubba.

  229. Pauoa Boy January 11, 2009 8:38 am

The pistol is an excellent offensive scheme for a running back. Vai Taua at Nevada knows all to well about that. It allows the running back to see the holes develop along the line and hit it with a full head of steam before anybody making contact. A guy like LWJ would definitely florish in it since he is a fast north and south guy.

Our running game if you’ve noticed is so predictable it’s not even funny. I think I could be able to call a run play 99% of the time no joke. Reason being is if you watch how they lineup in the backfield, you’ll notice the QB and RB anticipate the snap by leaning forward slightly letting you know it’s a run. I think now that Inoke Funaki is moving to the backfield Coach Ron could call some trick plays and Inoke could become a very deceptive weapon in the arsenal this year.

  230. Pauoa Boy January 11, 2009 8:45 am

    BHF2,

Howzit, moa bettah we get both Toma and Hasiak. After watching Stan Hasiak in the Under Armour High School Championship game, I came away very impressed. They allowed him to play Guard almost that whole game and he pretty much dominated and made a name for himself. His stock definitely has risen and I know Norm Chow is probably licking his chops right now. He has intimidating size for a Guard and I’m sure he’ll get alot bigger and stronger, I’m praying he is one of the surprises that will somehow sign the Warrior LOI. Anyway, he is definitely a top-tier lineman we need to still persuade to stay home!

Test post…. I don’t know if anyone is interested. I’ll post this since it’s a bit slow this morning. Let me know if anyone wants to see the all the data.

I saw an interesting attendance list for the ’08-09 Bowl games. I thought it might be more useful to see how the Bowls ranked in percentage of seating capacity – rather than by raw attendance figure only. It’s a bit off since some numbers are “inflated”, some include standing-room-only, and some are guesses. The Hawaii-Bowl seems to be about #14 – In general, the Bowls w/ WAC teams are poorly attended.

    # BOWL MATCHUP CITY Capacity ’08-09 08-09(%) ’07-08

There are a few games that exceed 100%! That’s either because I used the wrong data (from Wikipedia), or the attendance figures were inflated, or had SRO. BTW – the LV-Bowl is #1, and that can’t be correct! 😀

  237. brew808 January 11, 2009 9:32 am

I don’t know what to think of Ferd’s column today – especially with games (supposedly) scheduled far out in advance. Clearly, UH needs to play big-time opponents. But there has to be a significant benefit ($kala$, publicity, recruiting, home/home contracts, etc.) to the Team and UH. This is especially with true with the BCS schools stock-piling their games, keeping them at home and hoarding the big-time TV monies! (We’ve discussed this several times – Thanks Garret!) We have to have faith in JD the AD and Mack. 😐 😯 😀

  265. brew808 January 11, 2009 10:24 am

Hey Ronnie – I was looking at the data in SteveM‘s list of Tsaikos planning on attending the UNLV game in Sept. You have 15 peeps!?! So, does that mean you’ll be getting the one room again? Hehe…. 😆 😯 😀

  266. brew808 January 11, 2009 10:30 am

Nevermind… it’s back to normal now

Hmmmm… “back to normal” really does span and wide range of possibilities…. 😆 😯 🙄

  267. brew808 January 11, 2009 10:31 am

Oh great, a missed FG, so the score remains 13-2-11…. That looks like my locker combination! I think we need another safety! 😯 😀 🙄

    좋은 아침
    Good Morning Tsai-Kos!

Currently 17 degrees in Seoul, with 10 mph winds making it feel like 0 degrees. Later today will be 29 degrees with the wind kicking up to 15-25 mph. Ainokea. I going skiing. No worries, just fun on the slopes.

    Go Giants!

    Out.

  271. jm2375 January 11, 2009 10:42 am

Way off topic, but I need to vent a little….

My 13-year old is always complaining when I won’t let her go to Pearlridge or other places without an adult present. I need to show her the article on gangs in this morning’s paper.

And on Nov. 15, more than 100 youths fought inside Pearlridge Center. The fight took place on a Saturday afternoon while the mall was packed with people…

  274. brew808 January 11, 2009 10:56 am

I don’t have much invested in this game – either emotionally or financially…. But again I claim that Defense is what wins games and championships! IMHO 😀

  275. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 11, 2009 11:02 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Tchahng- sounds like a typical Seoul winter day. 🙂

  276. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 11, 2009 11:04 am

    UNLV… hmmm.
I’m juggling vacation days and visits with Lilu to clear a path to UNLV.
Bringing Lilu and crew to Hawaii instead of taking kids to Portland is the first step.

  277. jm2375 January 11, 2009 11:05 am

    new post…

  278. brew808 January 11, 2009 11:06 am

    Howzit TChahng [서울특별시!

Seeing you post reminds me of a trivia question I wanted to ask of the Tsaikos…. What pair of Tsaikos are the furthest apart in distance relative to each other? There are two parts (maybe) – in country and international? 😯

Is it Liz_Kauai to Florida_Ted or NYUH?
    How about
TChahng or G or ChinaDrew, to 22London. Or is it to NYUH. How about Frank and Rob25.

Well, I think it’s pretty interesting, especially on a lazy Sunday like today. Oh – I suppose we can compute it, but just looking at the map or globe – it’s not obvious! Of course, one might claim it’s BHF2 or Maryanne and reality, but that’s too weird…. 😆 😯 😀
