Somebody didn't get enough sleep

It appears the Warrior volleyball team has made the right moves in correcting the problems of last season. Freshmen — and future stars — Steven Hunt and Gus Tuaniga have energized the team, Josh Walker has embraced the role of go-to hitter, and middles Steven Grgas and Matt “Dragon” Rawson now are threats as attackers.
But the program still could use some fixing, in such areas as:
Crowd placement: The folks working in the office last night questioned the attendance of 1,200 as being inflated. The figure was quite accurate. The problem is that in volleyball, the setup is flip-flopped from basketball. The teams are required to face the referee, who is at the top of an elevated platform. But because the stand obstructs court-side views, the television cameras and announcers are placed on the same sideline as the team. The boosters are behind the team benches, meaning most of the fans are not shown on television.
Ticket prices: It was a nice gesture to lower the lower-bowl seats to $11 apiece. But knocking off at least another dollar would have been better. Ten dollars is just a clean, round number. I wonder how they came up with $11, anyway. It would be like a newspaper, in a frail economy, deciding to raise the cover price by a quarter.
Premium fee: OK, a season ticket for the lower bowl is $150. The premium fee is $100. Wuh? Does men’s volleyball really need to charge a premium fee? It drives folks who might consider buying a season ticket to instead pick-and-choose individual games.
The 10-minute break: Everywhere else in the country there are three-minute breaks between sets. Only in the Stan Sheriff Center is there an expanded 10-minute (and sometimes longer) break between Sets 2 and 3. First, the break kills momentum. Second, volleyball is a sport of endurance, a strategy negated by the break. It would be like golfers all being allowed a 15-minute shi-shi break before the 15th hole. The MPSF coaches recognized the Hawai‘i rule was stooo-pid, and voted it out. Even Jim Donovan noted that the 10-minute beak was unnecessary. But some administrators said they weren’t notified, and tabled a move to restore the break to three minutes. (C’mon, if administrators had to be notified, would Les Murakami Stadium have been built?) One of the reasons cited was it would give fans a chance to get food. Another was that the time had been sold to sponsors to hold promotional contests. But in my brief experience working the food stands (my wife, who was leading the school group, “fired” me for having a bad attitude), I noticed that refreshments, like at movie theaters, were purchased mostly before the event. And if fans are really going to get food, who’s watching the sponsors’ contests?
But I digress.
We now return to our regular programming.

* * *

UH recruit Iuta Tepa of Long Beach Poly was named to MaxPrep’s High School All-America first team.

* * *

Adam Leonard leaves tomorrow to work out for the next month in Tampa.
He hopes to be invited to the NFL combine. If that does not happen, he will return to either his home in Seattle or to Hawai‘i to prepare for UH’s Pro Day in March in Carson, Calif.
The downside is Leonard will miss the bash of the year — Brad Kalilimoku’s graduation party on Sunday.
“That’s the biggest thing in Hawai‘i,” Leonard said.

* * *

Corey Nielsen will be our chat guest on Monday.

* * *

The word on the street is that because of budget cuts, the “Sports Animals” afternoon show will be cut by an hour, to the 4 p.m.-6 p.m. slot.

  10. 808flowmaster January 9, 2009 9:49 am

For men’s v-ball and women’s b-ball…does there really need to be a pricing structure? I can see maybe a couple of sections on each side of the court reserved for premium ticket holders, boosters, sponsors, players/coaches families. But the rest of the lower and the entire upper should be priced the same at something like $10. I would think just filling the lower bowl to capacity would improve the atmosphere for the players and fans, as well as, look better on tv. Anybody know what the number of seats in the lower bowl?

oxymoron – let’s begin with the women’s bball coach first.

ST – I wonder why they say live audience? As opposed to a dead audience?

808flowmaster – From the looks of it and from years of guessing the number of M&M’s in a jar I would say around 7,000 – 7,500.

  17. Stephen Tsai January 9, 2009 9:57 am

It was Rawson’s left shoulder, which will need surgery after this season. It popped out of the socket — subluxed? is that what they call it? — and it’s sore, but he’ll keep playing.

Give us some football news ST were dying here.

  20. Garret January 9, 2009 10:02 am

Update about another Warrior recruit (everyone probably knows about Victorino already) that chose baseball over football.

The Evansville Otters today announced the signing of left handed pitcher Sean Thompson of LaJunta, Colo.

A fifth round draft choice of San Diego out of Denver’s Thunder Ridge High School in 2002, Thompson passed up scholarship offers from the University of Hawaii (football) and Arizona State University (baseball) to sign with the Padres.

  21. Garret January 9, 2009 10:04 am

Bob Stoops sure doesn’t seem to be doing well lately in BCS games, and Oklahoma fans are a little unhappy now.

(Stat: Four trips to the National title game, most points scored is 19.) Thought he got outcoached badly last night. Mistakes: Going for it on 4th down early. Calling a pass into the middle of the field (with no timeouts, right?) inside the 10 with less than 10 seconds to play in the half. Even if the pass were caught, wouldn’t have the clock ran out? And incessant running in the second half in an effort to keep the ball away from Tebow and soften the defense failed. He waited too long to go back to the pass, and then Bradford forced a bad pass that ended the game.

  22. Garret January 9, 2009 10:05 am

I wore my UH volleyball t-shirt all day yesterday…glad that they started the season well.

  23. Kazz January 9, 2009 10:05 am

    RE: Crowd placement/ticket prices.

$10.00 general admission seems like a good median huh? Either way I won’t complain about $11.00 either.

Interesting inside info about where most of the crowd is. Anyone that actually attends a men’s game can see the same thing.

Would it be too much to ask to “herd” fans in such a way that the majority is seen on television? Other entertainment entities do this for television purposes. They also position their cameras such that it will seem “packed” when it’s really not.

But, great SWEEP last night and a good way to start the season!

bstunna2002 – this time last year most were still posting about what happened to the Warriors in the Sugar Bowl. Looks like this year we get an early jump on men’s VB.

By the end of the month and well into February we’ll be talking about the recruits and then the subject will vary to include the NFL combine, Pro day at UH, spring practice, and then the projected starters at each position.

There should be a lot of Warrior recruiting talk during/after the recruits that are visiting on the weekends this month. I’m sure that ST will have the scoops but he’ll spread them out so that he writes about one recruit per day…

The next few weekends are *very* important for recruiting!

  27. Kazz January 9, 2009 10:11 am

    Garret,

After their big loss at last year’s Fiesta Bowl, I was already telling people that Stoops would be the coach that would “quietly” be on the hotseat.

They thought I was crazy, but alas… 4-8 in bowl games in the past couple of years is not enough for a program with the kind of money that Oklahoma has. Every season there is treated as “NC or Bust”.

Stoops will be safe for now, but if he loses next season’s bowl game (whatever that may be), then he better start sweating.

  49. Pauoa Boy January 9, 2009 10:47 am

Coach Nash just needs to revamp such a stagnant offensive scheme. Running the Flex/Motion offense is boring, slow and so repetitive to the point the defense can anticipate the offensive movement and cheat into position. That offense is supposed to be able to get the ball to the paint but instead we’ve got players getting bunched up standing around, Lasha “Parking Lot Launchah” taking stupid shots, Balocka stepping out shooting 3’s…what da heo??? We have athletic players who can run so maybe a transition style offensive scheme would help. We don’t have a true point but Nitoto can push the ball, we have high flyers in Flemings and Adams, an okay spot up shooter in Parking Lot Man, Mayen is also a decent shooter, Amis and Balocka is quicker than most big men. I dunno just my thoughts, but until this happens there’s not much to get excited about UH Basketball. IMO I think Roderick Flemings could be more productive and average 30pts. at least in a more run and gun offense ala Phoenix Suns style.

  50. Pauoa Boy January 9, 2009 10:50 am

From what I’ve heard, Tepa is still committed to UH but wanted to take his visits and make a solid decision thereafter. I’m still thinking he’ll sign the Warrior Paperwork!

I agree…seems like UH is the only college atmosphere where you no can get nuckin futs or else somebody going get butt hurt and complain. Other College Football Stadiums have fans who stand the entire game going crazy. Basketball Schools like Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, etc… all go crazy too! Being told to sit down at UH Volleyball and Basketball Games is retarded. Either get up and cheer or go home watch on TV. Granted we need all the fan support we can get in these tough times, but ah c’mon…college game atmosphere supposed to be loud, raucos, and fun!

    Oxy,

Valid observations there. Also I wonder how much of the “STOLEN” 2002 National Championship effected the fans’ perception. To me, it would just further my support with my fist in the air saying “F*** THE NCAA, GO WARRIORS!!!”.

But as far as the “appeal” of the players to the female fans is concerned, I think collegiate athletics is “hand-cuffed” in the fact that they cannot “market” teams or players the same way a professional franchise can.

Surely Mike Wilton would not recruit certain types to attract that kind of attention regardless if they could play or not. I acknowledge that you are not implying this, but at the same time I think we can all “appreciate” the kind of obstacles Men’s Volleyball has to deal with.

Volleyball at the Division I level does not bring in the kind of revenue nationally that other sports do for both men’s and women’s programs, but Hawaii has made it so that volleyball is a big deal. UH needs to “get back” to that.

Women’s attendance was down this past season and you could see it in the arena, but you still tell that the Wahine Volleyball team is still a big deal to sports fans in Hawaii.

If Coach Wilton and Co. start winning I think the rest will take care of itself simply because of how volleyball is respected in Hawaii.

Balocka needs to play like the big man he is trying to shoot 3′ s dude looked like TRex against Boise short arm 3 point shots. We also should run more of a uptempo offense I thought when Nash took over he promised this would be a run and gun style offense.

    Hi Stephen.
I was reminded of the series of videos on Colt that demonstrates how he became “localized”.
The recruits will find it easy when they come with a sense of personal humility and high work ethic… ready to love and be loved by the people of Hawaii.

    Stretch,

Being told to sit down at UH Volleyball and Basketball Games is retarded. Either get up and cheer or go home watch on TV. Granted we need all the fan support we can get in these tough times, but ah c’mon…college game atmosphere supposed to be loud, raucos, and fun!

Agreed. Come to think of it, I don’t think I have ever heard or seen a statement from JD or McNamara in the past regarding this. There have been quite a bit of people calling in to the morning sports shows complaining about being “silenced” during UH sporting events and this is nothing but a “black eye” on the atmosphere at games.

    What does ST believe?

  90. Stretch January 9, 2009 11:40 am

ST, Princess Leila and others – I have to apoligize, I cancelled delivery of the HA to my house. It don’t come early enough and I don’t read it when I get home. I guess I’ll have to find something else to read during my “meditation” time.

I remember when Kekaula asked the media types to contribute. One of media types wrote a piece, then balked, saying it was unethical and that he wanted his story removed. Well, that would have cost a couple of thousand. Kekaula asked me what to do. I suggested that he send the bill to the balking person. The response: OK, it can run.

  94. Kazz January 9, 2009 11:49 am

    RE: Game Atmosphere.

This is why I will always remember the 2008 Hoops Paina event.

While the lower bowl was “almost” filled and the upper deck completely empty, the crowd was NUTS!!!! You had the usual people (demographic) show up, but then you had hundreds of younger people out and having the time of their life making noise and bringing in some life to the Stanley.

The game wasn’t great and was slow at times, but I was just busy taking in the atmosphere and watching people I usually don’t see at UH games having fun and dancing along with the band, cheering with the cheerleaders (bless their hearts), screaming “LET’S GO BOWS”.

Ah… memories. It had a good feel to it that night. No one got escorted out for unruly behavior, no one got drunk (no alcohol sold that night at 11pm), it was just good loud, noisy, standing up and jumping up and down cheering for your team kind of fun.

I sat in the student section that night and I overheard the kids behind me say “check this out, a late night college basketball game! This is crazy, it’s loud in here”.

    http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2009DE.php

    David Veikune, Hawaii
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 265.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.84.
    Projected Round (2009): 5.
1/9/09: David Veikune finished his senior campaign with 16.5 TFL and nine sacks.

11/16/08: His 40 is a problem, but David Veikune has 5.5 sacks and 11.5 TFL in 10 games this year.

Note-This is an update (1/9) on walterfootball.com web site.
DV is rated as the 19 best available DE entering the draft.(projected 5th round)
Prior to today’s update DV was listed as a free agent prospect.
As for AL and SE an older update (around a month ago) had the two around the 20,21 best LB entering the draft (6th round)
There isn’t an update for CB. So not much about Mouton, although the site earlier mentioned him as a free agent prospect.

What’s interesting the 2010 mock drafts has Estes as the 5th best available center and projected 4th round pick. Blaize is mentioned as a later round pick.

Here a the numbers to Travis Laboys combine:
    Grading System

    TRAVIS LABOY
    Position: DE
    Class: Sr
    School: Hawaii
    Conference: WAC
    Ht., Wt.: 6’3, 263
    40 Time: 4.69
    Grade: 3.79

    Selected by Tennessee Titans
    Round 2, pick 10 (42 overall)
BIO: 2003 Defensive Player of the Year in the WAC after recording 76/22/13. Also intercepted two passes and broke up three more. Junior totals were 65/17/7 after 52/11/4 as a sophomore when he moved into the starting lineup.

Performed well at the Combine running under 4.7 in the 40 and completing 35 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Note-TL number are awesome. And if DV stock is to rise, he’d have to have similar numbers at the Pro Combine.

On another note, I didn’t realize tha TL was that fast and that strong. Wow.

When the Animals first started, I voiced my dislike of them to the GM (verbally) and told him to bring back Scott Robbs. Well, he really listened to me…..

ST – I must also apologize. I cut my subscription to weekends only, but my rate still went up! I was paying only for Sundays only ($6/mo) and getting the whole week. This went on for several years. No wonder they in fiscal trouble. I also cancelled Brand X. They’re still trying to get me to subscribe again.

See some of you tonight at the game!!

ST ~ The ‘leather lung’ fan was a one man army replacement for the Manoa Maniacs who were not there last night. Why would they want to silence one person? JD needs to take a hard look at current policy.

Part of the college experience is to develop school spirit by cheering wildly for the home team, and against the opponent. I would be willingly to pay his season ticket for the other seat just to hear him go off!

I would buy him another season ticket for Wahine BB, to sit behind Coach E-Bolla and scream at him all game long. I think E-Bolla would resign after the constant subliminal reminders of his incompetance.

Actually, he was pretty effective as we watched him disrupt the concentration of several servers and cause them to make service errors.

It was a decent one man show with a simple format that probably wasn’t that expensive.

I missed about three months of gym time due to laziness and LONG A$$ work hours leaving me too tired to go. When you get up at a quarter to 6 in the morning and then come home at 9:30pm that tends to make one pass out as soon as you get home.

    re: The Office (TV show)

I’ve only been watching the re-runs on TBS lately and it’s a funny show, but when I talk about it with my brother he just takes on this attitude that he knows comedy better than me just because he only watched the UK version of the show (the original I guess).

I get the same reaction with some of my friends.

Ah screw them, it’s still a funny show.

    It’s the latter.

Hey, I just bought a hotdog upstairs, and I noticed the concessions were run by the Roosevelt Leo Club.
At first, I’m like, cool, Leo Goeas has his own fan club.
Then I realize, they’re Rough Riders.
So, I say, HEY, ROUGH RIDERS!
And they gave that TRO look.

  172. LizKauai [Believer] January 9, 2009 5:10 pm

hmmm… never saw the Office. Except on a plane once. I was pretty funny.

I guess I should watch a few mainstream shows so I can converse informedly with my blog host. Never watched The West Wing or Lost or anything with the Stars… and the last AI I followed was with Jasmine Trias… oh well…

How bad is the turf at Aloha Stadium? On the news I they said that it was bad for pro soccer and that the field at Roosevelt was better. Did ST have something to do with this?

Was a professional soccer program of some sort held at the stadium in the last year or two? If memory serves (and many times it does not) a report said the turf was not good for MLS soccer.

  180. Kazz January 9, 2009 5:44 pm

    Labrat,

Turf at Aloha Stadium is all bus up.

The blades of synthetic “grass” have shrivled up and are “withering”. I believe it’s three years beyond it’s “warranty”. Not to mention the thing is losing it’s color too (i.e. faded).

  181. wafan January 9, 2009 5:45 pm

  182. wafan January 9, 2009 5:49 pm

    Kazz . . .

Yep, the field is definitely losing its color. During the Hawai’i Bowl it was really evident where the WAC lettering used to be. Now the trick will be to repaint the lettering in exactly the same place or there will be a ghosting or maybe a cool 3D effect going.

  183. roysan16 January 9, 2009 5:57 pm

Florida wins National Championship. And 11 teams on their schedule went to bowl games. Reading how a yahoo sport’s writer proclaimed Florida as the best team of all time pretty much sums up how tough of an opponent Florida was for Hawaii. Yet I went back today and looked at the archives of the first quarter. And we were really in the game. In front of 90 thousand fans the first 25 plays of the game we held our own. Even though the team bellied up in the second and third quarter, it’s the beauty of the first twenty five plays, where the surge of the O-Line and D-Line showed more fortitude than you would expect from a team designated as 30 pt. underdogs. Even the tempo of the game, a nice mix of running plays and passing plays in the first quarter was pleasing to watch. End of first quarter: Tie. Yeah, we held our own. Second and third quarters: Different story. Different song. Not pleasing to watch. Fourth quarter: Nod Hawaii against Florida’s backups. End of game:Wow, Florida.

If this were a mixed martial arts bout there’s no question it was a knock out victory for the Florida team as the Florida team ran away with speed and big plays on offense. And a punt and interception returns for touchdowns. But Hawaii can take some salvation that they got their punches in too. Also Hawaii fans can take note that there was no backing down of their team, or submission, or quit. And this has to count for something, not withstanding of what reads on the scorecard. Or scoreboard.

So many times this season after a loss I’m saddened. A successful football season to me is similar to a Kumite tournament, where it’s round robbin fighting and the last fighter standing is the champ. And this is what I want- Hawaii to be the last person standing…or being National Champs someday. And when Hawaii loses, the images I see in my mind are similar, and using the martial arts and Kumite tournament analogies, of the Hawaii team taking a big beating in the ring. It sickens me. When they get knocked out I feel their pain. This year is was Florida last person standing in the ring.Congratulations, Gators. Someday, I hope it’s Hawaii. Go Warriors.

    An eye-for-an-eye justice?

HOUSTON — A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it.

Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant’s death.

While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the infirmary.

“”Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it,” agency spokesman Jason Clark said Friday.

Well, I’m back in the ice box. Thanks again to everyone who showed up to the CC on Tuesday. Had an interesting flight back to Spokane. First, the flight from Kona to Seattle was like riding a roller coaster for about half the fight. Then on my flight from Seattle to Spokane, there were 2 Hawaii kids going to Wazzu for a recruiting trip. One kid from Maui and one from Hilo. I believe the Maui kid said he committed to Wazzu already and the Hilo kid committed to UW, but was taking his visit to Wazzu anyway. It was funny listening to them talk about playing each other in the Apple Cup next year. The kid from Hilo was Semisi Tokolahi. I think the kid from Maui was Jordan Pu’u-Robinson, not sure though.

  193. letsgowarriors January 9, 2009 9:01 pm

Tuata was tearing it up as a slotback for Mt. SAC at the beginning of the season before he got injured. he came back for 1 game and had like 92 yards receiving, then got injured and did not play the rest of the season. coaches should really think about offering him an invited walkon. hes really under the radar right now:

    1. he’s undersized
    2. he went to Pasedena CC last year
    3. he transferred to Mt. SAC this year and was injured for half the season

I read somewhere that Boise wanted Tuata, but they had exhausted all their scholarship offers. It looks like Tuata has 0 D-1 offers, so hopefully we can snag him as a walkon. Plus he has 3 to play 2, coaches can redshirt him this season since we got all the JC guys from last year. And Tuata could be either a SB or RB.

12/15/08 quote in the Nevada Appeal

    A LITTLE HARSH?
Nevada center Dominic Green has lost his scholarship for the second semester after getting a DUI last weekend.(writer’s note- DG, 2 time all-wac center; it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up in the draft…I think he’s a darkhorse that might end up going higher in the draft than projected than as a free agent)

Apparently, Green was driving a friend home in the friend’s car on last Friday when he was pulled over for expired tags by the Nevada Highway Patrol. He is the ***fifth player*** to be arrested for a ***DUI***.
Green will be allowed to play in the upcoming bowl game, however. He will have to pay his own tuition and other fees for the second semester. He is expected to graduate in May.
Two other players, Kenny Viser and Rocco Bene, were kicked off the team after DUIs before the season started because they had past indiscretions. The only reason Green was allowed to stay on the team is that he had no other problems on his record.

It’s good to see all our men staying out of trouble. In all sports, I say they’re doing a good job.. Even for the ladies, for I can’t recall any items in the news of any trouble. I mean there’s been some that I don’t want to mention here because it would be like discrediting the good work that the rest have strived for in perserving the good image of the program. So once again good job to the athletes that continue staying out of trouble, which gives the UH a good name. And for which we are so proud of them.

  197. Garret January 9, 2009 9:45 pm

    letsgowarriors,

I would love for UH to get Gabe Tuata! I hoped they would get him out of high school, then followed him at both of his JCs…I don’t know if he’d agree to walk on, but if he did he’d be great for the team!

The only thing is, walk-ons rarely agree to redshirt because they are paying for that year and aren’t getting to play! I think asking him to walk on and redshirt would be hoping for too much.

    cheers garret,

    cheers everyone,

Confronted with problems and sorrows of the past. A new name, or a new anonymity to me was comforting and freed me from answering and acknowleding the past. Or having to clash with rivals and enemies. And this may be the wrong way of thinking. But that is what I wanted. When Kazz asked me a question, and he was the first, there was not one moment of hesitation or reservation to admit and be open to him about his discovery, suspicion or his curiousity. But this group here, I know and I sense, are a bunch of smart cookies and really I think they knew all along that I was at one time “ralvic” and then “marlis”. When you look at a person writing-their nuances, syntax, style and temperment it’s easy to determine and hypothesis who that person was. But coming from the horses mouth, so to speak, me, only puts the admission of truth and the reasoning of why I did what did to rest. And to some I can see how this can be comforting too. To everyone continued best wishes.

Rawson’s brother is awesome. He started up a “We Will Rock You” chant by himself, and soon many of the people in the SSC were following along. They even started the music, and the crowd continued from there. Everybody took notice of him — as he moved from one side to the other (yes, he did move), he got more and more people to follow him. By the third set, the Mānoa Maniacs section was decently filled.

We noticed that Stephen was on the phone. He’s looking out into the stands — then we realized that it was Mike on the phone, trying to get his brother to find him in the stands. Aww, brotherly love …

roysan16: I have a terrible memory, so I couldn’t remember who you reminded me of (if that makes sense), but now that you mentioned those names, it all makes sense. 😀

    Happy Saturday Tsai-kos!!

Despite the fact the Warriors lost, that was a pretty good game. Hard to win when your blocker is 6’3″ and their hitter is 6’8″.

Saw ST (of course) taking notes with pen and notepad, not on a ‘puter, da Docs, and MeiLing. Missed Jason and sj & myki.

I think the Warriors have 3 new fans. My daughter and her friends had a lot of fun. They now want to go to all the games. At $3 each, I think I can swing it. They were cheering and making a lot of noise. Maybe UH should start giving out blocks of seats to the schools. Start ’em young and you’ve got fans for life. Or do like Fun Factory does and reward the kids for good grades with tix to games.

I’m tired. Time to go nene. See ya tomorrow.

    fuud for thought….

been in kona all day long. the boss mets up with me and we find this quaint little sushi place on alii drive. its called shiono. it was recommended by several local folks and the main thing was it is run and owned by a former japanese national. thats important when looking for authentic, good quality sushi house.

we both order the sashimi/sushi platter dinner. at 35 bucks a pop it was a little pricey. we started off with beverages chardonnay for the boss and kirin drafts for me. the cute, young, little waitress starts us off with miso shiru which she promptly spills it on the table the soup heads in my direction, but, with still catlike quickness of yesteryear i jump up onlyh to have the shiru land on part of the shorts and all of the right leg. ouch. poor girl was ready to cry. had i not jumped up it would have landed smack dab on the opu and jewels.

back to the meal, the miso shiru was good, but, the tossed greens was really good stuff with house special dressing.

the five nigiri-zushi and a whole spicy ahi cali roll and a basket of fine quality ahi, salmon, and hamachi later all was good. we also ordered seabass broiled with a misoyaki sauce which literally melted in your mouth. of course we also ordered some ikura nigiri.

the cute little waitress buys us dessert. tempura ice cream. broke the mouth. tahitian vanilla ice cream rolled with a cake donut like batter deep fried and served with a smattering of fresh whipped cream topped with a drizzling of hot fudge. too bad for me that the boss is quick with spoon when it comes to dessert.

we started to walk about after the meal but our stomach couldn’t take it for too long so we headed back to the royal kona hotel. best deal in town right now for kama’aina couples.

139 bucks a night gives you ocean view rooms that were recently renovated. very spacious rooms with an ample balcony. free parking, free breakfast for two, a bottle of champagne if you tell em its your anniversary(belated okay), and some discount resort coupons.

    # Garret:
    January 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

The South-Florida Sun-Sentinel reporter also went over and over the Miami-Baltimore game tape. He is *not* as critical of Samson as the Palm Beach Post reporter. Note that his discussion of Miami’s OL play has NO criticism of Samson.

Rookie left tackle Jake Long got beaten twice for sacks.

His first one was to Terrell Suggs, who beat him with speed and effort. Suggs initially went inside, where he was blocked by center Samson Satele. But Suggs got off that block and went around Long to bring a retreating Pennington down.

However, Long doesn’t deserve all the blame on the play. Pennington had nowhere to go with the ball because Ted Ginn Jr. never noticed his quarterback was in trouble, adjusting his route, or coming back to the ball.

On the second of Long’s sacks the Ravens got him with a cornerback AND safety blitz. Both players came from his gap and left guard Andy Alleman deserves half a sack for not picking up one of the speedy defenders the Ravens brought on that fourth-quarter play. For the record, that was a six man rush.

Bill Parcells’ long standing theory is your offense will never develop without a good line in front of it, and I subscribe that line of thinking.

Veteran right tackle Vernon Carey allowed the third sack of the game when Trevor Pryce powered past him. Carey flat out took a bad step on the play and paid for it. That’s 5 1/2 sacks allowed in 17 games for the free agent.

Darn little pencil neck reporter. We throw the ball 38 times, I block my man successfully 36 times and all he can talk about are the 2 sacks. Can’t wait too see this bozo again during camp this summer.

are UH students and below free? they need that to happen again to bring back the crazy fans that made UH volleyball a spectacle. no one reading newspapers or books during the game. or sleeping. what a difference 10 years makes.

  240. Jake Long January 10, 2009 2:06 am

I’d like to see the look on Mr. Sportswriter’s face with Terrell Suggs breathing fire down his neck.

  241. las vegas January 10, 2009 5:06 am

    Jake Long?
I could speed rush right past his lazy as…..maybe not
Bet I could give him a quick forearm shiver, step out and razzle dazzle
with a spin move like a ballerina….never mind, I’d just break my ankles.

I know I can get past that sportswriter though, if he’s not too big and fast and young

Couple him up wit allround great guy Rich Miano, da Hawaii kid’s hero of the Speed n Quickness gangs = I feel where we going.

a few years ago Rich recognized that frosh Davone Bess wuz gonna be special for the Warriors. I wonder who he’s thinking might be da special one in this year’s recuit class?

and i wonder whats happened to Earvin Sione?

  260. Ron Lee January 10, 2009 8:14 am

    Dear Cal,

How are you? I didn’t get any sleep last night while milling over spring practice in my mind. When we were at mom’s house for dinner on Sunday night, you mentioned how you wish you had two more solid defensive tackles to back up the four that will be in your regular rotation. Well here’s the deal, I have a few guys that you might be able to use, and you have a few guys that I could use.

I’ll give you Chauncy Makainai and Ray Hisatake. Makainai is going to be a monster of a kid in the middle for you. He’s 6’4″ now and weighs 315 pounds. I think he’s ready to go now, you won’t have to redshirt him. Ray is ready also and as you know already knows how to play that 2 and 3 alignment tackle position.

In the meantime Cal, I ask that you hand over to me Wade Keliikipi and Chad Lopati. Wade is going to be a monster left tackle for us. We’ll redshirt him for a year and teach him the finer points of offensive line play, and then put him at left tackle and leave him there for four solid years. Chad will have to play right away and won’t get to redshirt. Chad is 6’1″ and 245 pounds right now. We will keep him at 245 for this year and ask him to be our power running back. He’ll be 260 when he graduates in four years and will be drafted into the NFL as a fullback. We’re hoping that he can be like Wes Keliikipi was a few years back. If he turns out to be like Nate Ilaoa, then that’ll be a bonus.

Well, I’ll see you at the show tonight. Let me know what you think.

    Sincerely,
    Ron

    808ike,

The growing trend of early outs from CFB will be more problematic for the remaining college all-star games; Hula Bowl is done, how long before the Shrine and Senior Bowl follow?

…and what of the effect on APR’s for the big schools that attract the majot talent?

  282. d1島 January 10, 2009 9:45 am

    Oh sorry.
