It's all academic

In a race against the clock, defensive tackle Jesse Williams is hoping to gain admission into UH-Manoa for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 12.
Because he is a graduate of a school in Australia, there are issues whether some of his classes meet UH’s admission standards.
The Warriors probably should consult with softball head coach Bob Coolen, who has signed several players from Australia in the past.

* * *

Bryce Kalauokaaea, who did not play last season after undergoing knee surgery, should be ready for spring training in April.
Kalauokaaea was moved to running back in training camp. But he is expected to compete at his natural position, quarterback, in the spring.

It was a tough finish for Davone Bess, who appeared to suffer a thumb injury during today’s playoff loss. He came back in the second quarter.
But Bess earned $20,000 as part of his playoff appearance fee. That’s in addition to the NFL rookie base salary of $295,000.
The NFL has different step-pay minimums depending on the year a player is credited with entering the league. As a 2008 rookie, Bess will earn $370,000 in base salary in 2009 and $445,000 in 2010.
For a player entering in 2009, such as David Veikune, the base salaries for the first three seasons are $310,000, $385,000 and $460,000.

I was cleaning out my e-mail box and came across this picture of Luke Nishikawa, who died in a car accident in November. Luke is in the middle. My daughter is on the right. At his memorial a few weeks ago, Luke’s family mentioned how they appreciated the blog readers kind words of sympathy.

ha ha…let’s hope we get this Aussie DT in ASAP. Not sure we’ve had anyone as good as Mike Lafaele since he exhausted his eligibility.

  6. Southbay January 4, 2009 5:42 am

Let’s hope Jesse makes it. The sooner the better.

    Alojah Kakahiaka Gang…

I’m already liking this Jesse Williams kid. Seems to me he’s trying to get everything together to become a Warrior and wear that uniform on time. That is true about the academics from foreign countries not being accepted in the U.S. I used to have this problem with kids I recruited who graduated school in foreign countries. Trying to get their transcripts looked at and ensure they were equivalent to our school system standards were a pain!

    oxymoron,

Maybe guys like Jesse Williams and Wade Keli’ikipi will develop into dominant Defensive Tackles and be even better than the Sopoagas and Lafaeles of the world. They are young, raw, and have lots of time to develop there game to be able to dominate and play smash-mouth Warrior Style Football!

  8. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 5:49 am

Everyone tells me that the San Mateo DT is going to do wonderful things at UH. He’s already enrolled in school.

  9. Pomai January 4, 2009 5:53 am

This could be a profitable next few weeks for Davone Bess.
He already earned $20,000 for the Dolphins winning the AFC East.
He receives another $20,000 if the Dolphins win today.
If the Dolphins reach the AFC championship game, he earns an additional $37,500.
Each member of the winning Super Bowl team earns $78,000; the Super Bowl losers receive $40,000 apiece.
Bess already has earned the rookie’s minimum salary of $295,000 — the same base salary Colt Brennan received.

An he’s earned every bit of it!!!!!!!!!!

    Good luck Davone

  10. Pauoa Boy January 4, 2009 5:53 am

I just hope all the boys are doing wonderful things in the classroom, the weight room, working on their game, all the things great players do to be the best at what they do!

  11. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 5:58 am

There are some tricky periods in the offseason, namely February and late June. In January, players are either ticked off or motivated by the way the season ended. So participation is high. Then there’s the realization that they’re in school, with no games for eight months. The tough ones push through.

Where do mosquitos go during the day?
Lately, I’ve been chewed up by mosquitos at night. They do that irritating thing where they buzz around your head.
Then you turn out on the light, and it’s hide-and-seek.

  14. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 6:13 am

OK, I looked it up. Mosquitoes are nocturnal.
And they track their prey by detecting carbon dioxide from a distance.

  15. mano1 January 4, 2009 6:31 am

Really ? wow…these guys bite me 24/7. I guess I’m in the dark. Williams has been wanting to be a warrior like forever….why the new discovery now ?

  16. Garret January 4, 2009 6:33 am

Feature story on Dave Aranda! I didn’t realize that he was an OL when he played…he definitely showed toughness when he played OL while wearing a sling.

There was a Redlands High School representative on the sideline of the Hawaii Bowl Dec. 24.

David Aranda, 32, is a former offensive lineman for the Terriers and the defensive line coach for the Hawaii Warriors.

“He’s a football guy 24/7,” said David’s father, Paul Aranda. His son has now coached in five bowl games, including the Tangerine Bowl and the Alamo Bowl.

“He just loves it. He’s gone to a lot of pro camps and has been all over the place. He’s always looking to learn.”

A 185-pound linebacker, Aranda suffered from shoulder problems that forced him to play offensive line with his arm in a sling.

  17. Garret January 4, 2009 6:35 am

It seems like Jesse Williams has been linked with UH for around two years…I really hope that the Academic people work quickly to go over his transcript.

  18. Garret January 4, 2009 6:38 am

Manti talked about his recruiting decision.

“I’ve taken official visits to Notre Dame and UCLA,” Te’o said. “I liked the tradition at Notre Dame. It is huge there. The facilities are very nice at UCLA and the student body is very welcoming. I really enjoyed my time there.

“I’m visiting Stanford in the middle of this month and USC at the end of the month. Those are the two that are finalized. I’m not sure if I’ll visit my fifth finalist, BYU, since I’ve been there a bunch.”

“As long as I feel at home, I’m good. Nothing is going to be the same as my home but if I could find myself happy at that university if I wasn’t playing football, that’s what I’m looking for. You never know if you could get hurt or something and no longer have football, so you’ve got to be comfortable and happy there.”

“I’m going to make my decision known on Signing Day, but I should have my mind made up as far as where I want to go before that. I’m going to call the coaches at the four schools I don’t choose just out of courtesy and respect but I think I’m going to surprise the other one. I’m not going to tell the school that I choose beforehand.”

  19. Garret January 4, 2009 6:40 am

The NY Times has a feature story today on Reeve Koehler and other kids that are being recruited quite young.

At age 13, the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Reeve Koehler is so big that he has never been allowed to play organized football. Despite that, he already has a full scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii.

Koehler said he received his verbal scholarship offer from Hawaii this past summer while attending one of its football camps. Official written scholarship offers are prohibited by the N.C.A.A. until Sept. 1 of a player’s junior year in high school.

Koehler said he expected to play on the offensive and the defensive lines once he could finally compete in high school football next fall.

“It’s frustrating,” Koehler said of not being allowed to play in Hawaiian youth football leagues. “I want to get out there and play on the field, but I’m just too heavy.”

  20. Garret January 4, 2009 6:43 am

Cool story about how Army’s head coach recruited Navy’s head coach to UH.

Navy football coach Ken Niumatalolo has long admired new Army coach Rich Ellerson.

Their relationship goes back to 1983. That’s when Ellerson, then an assistant at the University of Hawaii, walked into Niumatalolo’s living room in Laie, on the island of Oahu, to recruit him.

Niumatalolo — with no other offers — went to play quarterback for Hawaii. They later coached together at Hawaii, and Niumatalolo’s been in touch with Ellerson since, picking his brain for information as he’s risen from bright young assistant to head coach.

Ellerson first learned the option from former Navy coach Paul Johnson, now in the process of leading Georgia Tech to prominence, while the pair worked together at Hawaii in the late-1980s. Ellerson’s attack is similar to Johnson’s and he even picked his and Niumatalolo’s head for tips on the option during a week-long stay in Annapolis a few years ago. Ellerson even enjoyed a family dinner at Niumatalolo’s home.

Just like any good service-academy coach, Ellerson prepared well for Wisconsin. He even called the Badgers’ defensive scheme. Ellerson scouted the Badgers and figured they would try to stop the option in a 4-3 even-based defense.

That’s what Cal Poly’s scout defense prepared for all week, and that’s what they saw. The Mustangs — giving up 40 pounds per man on the line — outrushed Wisconsin 276-184.

  21. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 7:04 am

Ellerson always wanted to coach at a military academy.
Wagner had some pretty good coaches on his staffs; Paul Johnson, Ellerson, Niumatalolo, Mark Banker, Chris Smeland, Buzzy Preston …

My theory on mosquitoes is bitter blood. I have the common “O” type blood and what I call sweet blood. My dad had type “B” and mosquitoes never touched him. Fortunately mosquitoes are not much of a problem in Arizona, unlike the tropical climates.

  24. bighilofan2 January 4, 2009 7:26 am

UH admissions has no problems processing foreign students, especially from Asia, perhaps Williams should major in Japanese language…and dont cite football as an activity.

bighilo I was told by an Aussie at the La Tech game that aussies go to school only to the tenth grade, with three options-quit school to do whatever, go to trade school, and for those wanting to continue to college they attend 2 more years of classes. That’s where the core requirements may not be met for a U.S. college. Totally different requirements to finish school…

  48. MeiLing January 4, 2009 8:51 am

ST…Once upon a tme a long long tme ago, there was Hadabug!
Made fro the African Daisy plant,. They extracted a chenmical called pyrethrins. The stuff was unreal. Mosquito starts buzzing in the room, you just sprayed it around a little and zp they either got dead or ran away. It was the best stuff around. If you can find it, your probelms are solved. I think some larger company bought them out and did away with the product so we can buy the less effective stuff they sell.

Anyhoo, off to clean the graveyards now…hiho..hiho…

miami’s offense is too slow. and they didn’t keep to their low turnover ratio. pennington threw some ugly passes. bess had his moments. ginn, another disappointment at a key moment in the game.
hopefully the dolphins realize bess’ worth and sign him to a good deal.

Well, the bonus count stops at one for Bess. Ugly game for the Dolphins and especially Pennington, but hey, the Ravens are known for their D, and it’s still a remarkable turnaround season. Bess made the most of his catching opportunities, that’s for sure.

  88. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:27 am

I think UH fans can do the “first down” signs … in the first quarter.
The problem is in the second quarter, when the beer is flowing, and the teams change sides. You’d have to make sure some fans, um, re-direct themselves.

What we did learn are who the players are. Unfortunately most of them were on Baltimore’s team. But there were glimpses of big time players showing up in big time games.

Paul Soliai forced a fumble Joey Porter recovered.

Davon Bess’ bubble screen, which he took up field for 45-yards, set up the Dolphins’ first touchdown, showed us something special from the rookie.

  94. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:34 am

OK, what was the bigger jinx?
Me writing about Bess’ playoff moolah or Ronnie giving play-by-play right up to Bess’ injury?

  97. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:37 am

Hey, I’m channel surfing and I came across the Ultimate Japan show. One of the commercials is for a ramen restaurant. Cool trick: there’s a shot of Konishiki with glasses and one without. Did they think we were to assume he was two different people?

  98. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:39 am

Make sure you let brew know.
Somebody had bruised feelings the other day.

  100. chawan_cut January 4, 2009 11:41 am

    the day other day?

  101. Garret January 4, 2009 11:42 am

    ST,

The playoff money isn’t a big deal for Bess in the long run…the big thing is that Bess did well in his first playoff game, made a big play, came back from injury, and Miami’s other starting WR (top 10 draft pick) disappointed.

That sets up Bess well to get a nice bump on his next contract, and I’m guessing that the increased contract value is way more than playoff money.

The bright spot about Bess getting injured is that he came back from it and showed his toughness…that is the type of player that Parcells likes.

I wish Miami could have won the game, but they couldn’t afford the turnovers they had and the Ravens were better today. So, I’m trying to look on the bright side for Bess.

  102. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:42 am

I don’t know what you’re talking about CC.
Post No. 98 looks fine to me.

  103. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:44 am

And don’t forget that Bess and Colt Brennan will be here for six weeks, beginning in early February.

  104. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 11:49 am

    OK. I think I’m over-posting.
I don’t want to be like the blog host that the folks at work call the “one-hit wonder” because he averages a reader hit a day.

  105. Pauoa Boy January 4, 2009 11:54 am

    Rey Maualuga’s got some balls…LMAO!

  106. labrat January 4, 2009 11:56 am

Are there applicants for the new coaching position?

  107. jm2375 January 4, 2009 11:56 am

    ST – #104 – I think you’re way past that.

BTW, is anyone keeping stats on the blogs. I’m interested to know the average number of comments WB gets a day. Plus our fearless leader is the only one that posts everyday (except for the blog strikes). It looks like other blogs are averaging 2-10 comments per post.

ST – did you get your Summerlin card? Did you use it yet? I’m interested in the diffs between Summerlin & HMSA.

  108. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 12:01 pm

    jm:
We have by far the most posters, but not always the most posts every day. Some of the blogs have a smaller group of very loyal readers.
But I think we’re the only blog in which the subject, not the host, is the lure.

  109. labrat January 4, 2009 12:04 pm

So that’s why your picture is not on the TV Week.

  110. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 12:04 pm

    jm:
Yep, I got my Summerlin card, and I might have to use it, since I have this cold. But so far Summerlin wins for the best card. It’s made of plastic. HMSA used to send us paper cards.

  111. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 12:06 pm

    We still run TV Week?
I used to read that all of the time. Until, you know, the invention of cable.

  112. AlaWaiPipeLayers January 4, 2009 12:08 pm

    Ronnie & ST:
Hawaii game attendees (I call them that cuz, they’re really fans) are notorious for not participating a vocal cheers. Sitting in the prime season ticket seats, it is rare to see any of the local guyz or galz participating in the organized cheers, noise making (when UH defense is calling for it) or any of the efforts by others to get them going. They don’t even get off their butts when the Warriors enter the stadium or at kick-off. They will raise their arms when a wave is going around but will not stand.

This even went on in ’07 when Hawaii was winning all the games. Any idea why? IMHO, this goes way back to high school when, if you were a guy, it wasn’t cool to be sitting in the fan section and yelling for your school.

I would really like to see UH games be a real college game experience!

  113. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 12:09 pm

    Hey, Stretch:
Thanks for the cool jar, with the M&Ms.
Wena only saw the “Wena” part, and took it. She’s been locked in Devon’s room playing Guitar Hero. She’s actually pretty good. I, however, might be the worst drummer. Even on the Easy mode, I struggled with “Hotel California.” I got booed off stage once.

  114. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 12:12 pm

When I was in college, I used to stand and yell. (That was back in the day when students actually had good seats.) We used to read Ferd Lewis’ stories on the opponents, then heckle them when they came in. I try to convince myself that it was because I was a big fan. But in hindsight, I think it’s because I’m an attention ho.

  115. Stretch January 4, 2009 12:25 pm

Too bad the UH home crowd isn’t like the UH crowds at the road games.

  116. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 12:28 pm

I think having the players’ parents and Ronnie enliven the road crowds.

    Colt vs Vick?

    http://www.dcexaminer.com/sports/37049179.html
    http://www.dcexaminer.com >> Sports

It’s never too early to debate who’s quarterbacking the Redskins next season.

If Jason Campbell isn’t the answer, many fans want to skip over aging Todd Collins for Colt Brennan. The hero of the Hawaiian Islands reminded me of Sonny Jurgensen during the preseason with his playmaking ability.

If fans aren’t happy with how Jason Campbell played in 2008, perhaps Michael Vick would give the Redskins offense a boost.

But let’s play hot stove league all the way. There’s a free agent passer coming loose on Jan. 20 that might help the Redskins. Someone who can play wildcat formation with the best.

    Michael Vick.

  123. FloridaTed January 4, 2009 1:16 pm

If Colt keeps playing great again in pre-season, he will definately become the Nr. 2 QB. Campbell, I think, is near his peak in performance and if he does not show serious and sustained improvement this year, Colt will be the starter in 2010. If not, somebody will snatch him up. There will be a big need for QB’s in 2010, the class will be much thinner than this year.

  124. FloridaTed January 4, 2009 1:19 pm

I would love to see him in Miami and than add RGM to the team.

  125. FloridaTed January 4, 2009 1:22 pm

With Colt at QB, Bess and RGM at slots, Miamis deep threat would suddenly be very real.

  126. jm2375 January 4, 2009 1:29 pm

I don’t think I’d call Vick a passer. As a longtime Redskins fan, I’d have to rethink my level of fan-ness. I also don’t particularly like owners (and executives) who micromanage. Let the coaches and gm make the roster and draft decisions.

  127. chawan_cut January 4, 2009 1:50 pm

Hail Stephen, the all mighty power wielding blog host!
too bad we couldn’t make some other previous “lame” comments vanish into thin air.
but then again, would i be anything without that in-famous day?
and is anyone headed to the wahine b-ball game today? this will be my first game amazingly. i gotta see for myself what all the fuss is about. i still don’t understand why they have some games on a weekday at 2 or 3pm. way to attract fans there…..

  128. chawan_cut January 4, 2009 1:54 pm

today’s miami game shows you how qb accuracy and composure can win or lose a game. pennington had done it all season until today.
i don’t see it in flacco, but he’s got a good running game and defense to hide behind. he just has to not screw up and make mistakes. the offense doesn’t solely rely on him.

  129. letsgowarriors January 4, 2009 1:58 pm

i know recruiting is pretty much done, but with tomorrow being 1/5, any chance of us going hard after 1 more OT?

  130. Garret January 4, 2009 2:01 pm

With Colt at QB, Bess and RGM at slots, Miamis deep threat would suddenly be very real.

    FloridaTed,

Miami normally only uses 1 slot receiver. They actually only had 3 receivers active for this game since they were mostly going to use 1 or 2 WR sets…they even had formations with *0* receivers, instead using 2 TEs, 2 RBs, and a FB.

So, don’t expect to see Bess and RGM on the field for Miami.

  131. Garret January 4, 2009 2:05 pm

The D sure doesn’t have to worry about 4 WR sets when a team doesn’t even have 4 WRs active!

  132. chawan_cut January 4, 2009 2:07 pm

    stretch,

    Hiya!
    Aloha Kakahiaka and
Nitey nite and Sweet Warrior Dreams for this morning and last night!

I just finished watching (and fast-forwarding through) the Dolphins game. Well, the Ravens dee was pretty formidable (I don’t feel so bad about the ‘Skins loss to them now) and I liked the way the Miami offense adjusted their offense with some success. Auntie Liz is very proud of our boys- especially Davone, who not only played well but showed his toughness and determination.

I hope what when Colt is finally on the field during a regular season game, he has an offensive scheme built for him like Flacco has… and a defense that complements.

    Fish for dinner!
I asked #2 son- whose birthday dinner is a bit overdue- what restaurant? He said… how about our own fresh fish?

    Okey dokey.
2 days, er nights of fishing, some contributions from #1 son and our friend Jane… halalu are us- with some papio and perch fillets thrown in.
    Auntie Margaret will cook tonight.

  136. Pauoa Boy January 4, 2009 4:31 pm

Under Armour High School Game stay on…

I only seen Manti Te’o and Stan Hasiak playing so far, not sure if anymore home grown talent stay playing but this game got some athletes! They got Stan Hasiak playing guard and I’ve been watching him, he seems like he could be a dominant Guard rather than Tackle. His size is intriguing but he moves pretty well for a big guy. I hope he signs the Warrior LOI instead of the Bruins.

  138. Pauoa Boy January 4, 2009 4:36 pm

Unfortunate for the Dolphins to lose the way they did. Ravens defense is awesome though and they are a tough team for anybody to beat. I hope they see Davone’s worth and sign him a multi-year million dollar contract. As an undrafted rookie receiver he outplayed just about all the other rookie receivers. He was obviously the best slot receiver in the draft and got shafted! He’s the best receiver on the Dolphins roster period!

  139. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 4, 2009 4:38 pm

Pauoa Boy- I also like that Davone is wearing #15. Talk about REPRESENTING!

  140. Pauoa Boy January 4, 2009 4:40 pm

Anyway, again good luck to the coaches out on the streets during this period of recruiting. Only a little over a month before LOI signings. Here’s hoping that all our verbal commits and some surprises sign the Warrior dotted line.

  141. Pauoa Boy January 4, 2009 4:42 pm

    Aunty Liz,
If only the original #15 guy could join him and Samson that would be a great reunion. Samson to Colt to Davone…TD Dolphins!!!

congratulations to davone bess and samson satele. now did i hear right that this season was the greatest turn around in nfl history?

so, if i were coach mack, in february i would bring samson, davone, and colt, since they may be home and have them talk to all the returning warriors about commitment, work ethic, and heart. what better trio than those folks?

  147. al ™ January 4, 2009 6:23 pm

  148. BowsForever January 4, 2009 6:55 pm

Well, Davone and Colt are supposed to be back in the islands for sure in February (Colt’s got a charitable event appearance at the Willows on Feb. 3). Davone is said to be hanging around for six weeks, I’m not sure about Colt but I’m sure it won’t be a day trip. If Davone/Colt can help “coach up” some of their fellow Warriors while they’re here, that would be awesome.

  149. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 7:03 pm

OK, why the heck is this post a little slow?
I mean, I talk about mosquitoes and M&Ms and this place goes downhill?

Davone and Colt are planning to host a party on the North Shore, according to Davone and Colt’s dad.
I’ll see if I can get Davone to do an online chat this week.

wow no kidding about it being slow.
i went off to my friend’s house, ate noodles from the manapua truck, went to best buy and the wahine bball game and there’s only been 19 posts in between?
talk about frustrating though. the wahine bball team. well. i’m a fan of all uh sports, but its hard to watch. sure we have kanekoa hurt, but someone needs to step up. i don’t know how good colorado is, but we went down by 14 or so in the first half. tied it up in the 40s in the 2nd, and then they go on a streak and we go down by 19. in the garbage time of the last few minutes we cut into the lead and only lose by 12. i don’t know how many excuses bolla has. the girls were playing hard. but if you thought the men’s team stood around when they first came up against the zone, you should see what the wahine do or not do.
i’m no basketball expert and don’t pretend to be one like jason, but it is really tough to watch.

  155. bighilofan2 January 4, 2009 8:00 pm

    ooops, dar arrowheads no show

right above comma get a back arrowhead
right above period sign get a forward arrowhead

you gotta use da arrowheads to surround da “a” to get the blue started, then toend it, after the reverse arrowhead, you gotta immediately put da slant whichis below the questionmark sign, and then you put the “a” and then you close with the forward arrowhead sign.

    heh heh he

    thank you very much brew808.

Bess talked with reporters after the loss today.

Receiver Davone Bess had spent a good while dissecting the disappointment in Sunday’s somber locker room but decided his thoughts, like the memory of what this team accomplished, should end on an up beat.

”At the end of the day,” said Bess, “this was a special season.”

Jason, there are all kinds of different titles for engineers in my field now in industry. At my previous company, the cool title to have lately was Systems Engineer, as those jobs paid more and were generally more interesting (lots of design and challenging problems instead of just doing what others designed). Later on I got promoted to the title of Research Engineer, which was more descriptive and brought more interesting work.

Because my new company is so small, I end up doing a lot of the (to me) boring management and administrative stuff instead of getting to do the fun Engineering stuff. So, I have the boring title of President. I look forward to the day where we grow enough or we sell the company so I can go back to being a Research Engineer.

I forgot to mention one dish for our New Years’ celebration…poke. I don’t know how I forgot to list that with the other stuff! I’m so glad that my kids don’t eat poke yet…they seemed to be scared of the name and worry that the food with “poke” them. More poke for me! Once they try it they will love poke because they love all types of sashimi.

It is nice that the Hawaii Bowl had the biggest increase in attendance this year among all bowl games. That isn’t a surprise since UH didn’t play in the Hawaii Bowl in 2007 and Notre Dame was in the 2008 bowl.

Of the 29 bowls that were around for 2007-08, 18 have shown a decrease in attendance this year. Seven had attendance of 35,000 people or less.

“It’s harder to sell a bowl game,” said Alamo Bowl director and CEO Derrick Fox. “Just look at the economy. People are watching their dollars.”

The Hawaii Bowl had the biggest increase (42.7 percent) of any bowl with Notre Dame playing Hawaii.

  203. d1島 January 4, 2009 9:56 pm

    HiFlyer,

but then maybe he’d watch next season on PPV!

  204. Garret January 4, 2009 9:56 pm

The Utah-Alabama game had higher ratings than UH’s Sugar Bowl game. I didn’t realize that the Sugar Bowls for UH in 2008 and Utah in 2009 were among the lowest-rated BCS games ever.

Meanwhile, the Utah-Alabama Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2 garnered a 7.8 rating, an 11 percent increase from last year’s Georgia-Hawaii game. Even so, the game ranked seventh-lowest among the 45 BCS games played to date.

  205. Garret January 4, 2009 9:58 pm

Adding another BCS Bowl seems to have brought down the BCS ratings…and it doesn’t help when the WAC and MWC teams play in BCS bowls at the bottom of the BCS TV ratings.

I’d go so far as to say that the addition of a fifth BCS bowl can officially be declared an abject failure.

Seven of the nine lowest-rated games of the BCS era have now taken place over the past three seasons. That coincides with the beginning of the current cycle in which the BCS added a fifth game and turned the national championship game into a stand-alone event.

By removing the top two teams from the existing BCS bowls (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange), the remaining lineup gets unavoidably watered-down.

It’s not like the BCS commissioners didn’t see this coming. After all, it wasn’t their idea to go to a five-bowl system in the first place.

The BCS’ current model was formed out of a “compromise” brokered by a panel of university presidents in response to pressure from the non-BCS conferences for increased access to the big games. Only one such team, 2004 Utah, qualified under the old parameters during the BCS’ first eight years of existence.

  206. maryann(e) January 4, 2009 9:59 pm

Jason, where for art thou Jason,
Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized; Henceforth I never will be Maryann(e)!

  207. Garret January 4, 2009 10:01 pm

SI writes that adding a “BCS buster” spot have been great to show that MWC and WAC teams can compete with the BCS schools, but the MWC/WAC schools don’t bring the same TV draw as the BCS conference schools. The facts are that the Pac-10, Big 12, Big 10 and SEC bring in the TV ratings…which is why they get so much more TV money for their regular season games than the other conferences.

The arrangement has worked out magnificently so far for the previously disenfranchised parties, with one of their teams qualifying for a BCS bowl in each of the first three years (Boise State in 2006, Hawaii in ’07 and Utah in ’08) and the Broncos (against Oklahoma) and Utes (against Alabama) doing wonders for their credibility with historic upsets.

However, the appearances of said teams haven’t exactly been good for business. The four BCS games so far to involve non-BCS teams have all been among the nine lowest-rated BCS games of the 45 played to date. The others have all involved an ACC and/or Big East team.

    Jason,

My 4-year-old loves raw fish, but won’t eat poke because she says it will “poke her mouth.” Even when we just give her the raw fish that we use for poke, she still won’t eat it–she loves tuna from the can (tuna rice), but doesn’t trust us when we say it is the same fish.

My 2-year-old just digs in and eats the poke.

  210. Garret January 4, 2009 10:18 pm

    brew808,

You are correct, Faith is the one that says that the “poke will poke her mouth”. Mika used to eat the poke but she doesn’t anymore…lately she has been trying to be just like her big sister in everything. Mika wants to have the same teachers as Faith, dress like Faith (whenever Faith outgrows something Mika is happy to wear the hand-me-downs), write and read like Faith, etc.

Mika even started to learn Math since her Faith is so good at math–so, now when we do the flash cards for multiplication, Mika gets the easier ones and Faith gets the harder ones (up to 11×11).

USC’s former offensive coordinator is trying to get USC’s current defensive coordinator to join him at U-Dub.

USC defensive coordinator Nick Holt will fly to Seattle today to discuss accepting the same job at Washington.

Holt’s interest in the job meant he lied Saturday when he said he was not interested in the Washington job.

Why would Holt be interested in moving to a less successful program for a similar job? The answer is control. At USC, Coach Pete Carroll continues to call the defensive plays despite relinquishing the defensive coordinator’s duties in 2006.

If Holt goes to Washington, he would have total control of the defense. He would also likely take a pay cut. Sources said Holt makes more than $500,000 at USC. Sarkisian already hired former USC defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin as his secondary coach.

  216. Stephen Tsai January 4, 2009 10:22 pm

I think they should use the same system that determines which team gets into BCS games, but instead of having five separate bowls, make it a playoff. That way the reward for a Utah or Boise State will be to keep playing on. The top top two teams get two byes, Nos. 3 and 4 get a bye. That works out, I think.

    Jason,

I haven’t wanted to teach the multiplication table for 12 yet because I figured Faith needed to work on her writing skills more. She is getting good at writing postcards and letters to people, and she spells most of the words on her own.

Faith’s school brings in a special math teacher just for her to have 1-on-1 math instruction 3x per week. They do word problems, math exercises, workbooks, and she really enjoys it. I’m still surprised at how she gets 1-on-1 instruction in math, reading, etc. I love this school district!

High school coach seems to tell the LA Times that USC doesn’t exactly follow the rules during recruiting.

Unnamed High School Coach: “I can’t comment on the accusations made by Norton. But I will say that having been a high school coach at some of the biggest schools in AZ I can tell you without a doubt USC does NOT recruit ‘100% pure’ as the assumed satire in your article suggests.

“I was a coach at a high school in Phoenix and we had Zach Miller (currently with the Raiders). He was the No. 1 TE in the country at the time. Pete Carroll came to our practice to look at him. Huge news . . . anyway, it was clearly a non-contact period for coaches . . . he disappeared from practice and I remember all of us thinking, ‘where did he go?’ Anyway, I remember kind of giving him a wink and saying did he want to meet Zach and he made a big thing out of saying he couldn’t at the time.

“As our practice concluded, players started to walk off toward the locker room . . . I was with the boys walking in. As I walked into the locker room who did I see? There was Pete in there glad handing players and pulling Zach into a corner to get in a few quick words.

“I could see that Pete eventually noticed me . . . he was just below a sprint out the door. How that guy got into our locker room ahead of a key to open the doors is beyond me . . . perhaps he coaxed a janitor into letting him get in or said he had to use the restroom, but I’ll never forget that . . . you can mention the story but because I do have to deal with coaches I wouldn’t want my full name used.”

I didn’t get a chance to blog on yesterday’s topic, and not sure if this is a faux pas or not, but will take my chances…

….I just wanted to say that Leo Goeas is a KS Alum (c/o ’85 one year younger than me), and I think he would be an outstanding addition to the coaching staff. Nice to see his success as an OL at UH and in the Pros.

I think I took Leo juice one day after a KS football game because my friend dared me to give it to the boy I liked, and I chickened out and Leo was right in front of me so I gave it to him and kind of ducked away. I think he thought I was a little weird. Ha.

Too bad they don’t let you do the juice thing anymore. Too many rules at Aloha Stadium.

  221. Garret January 4, 2009 10:33 pm

Wow, Cassell will really cash in this offseason.

Sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Patriots will use a franchise tag on Cassel that will give the team two options: Trade him if all goes well with Tom Brady’s rehabilitation from a knee injury or keep him because all is not well with Brady.

That would mean the Patriots would have about $29 million in salary cap space tied up in two quarterbacks, with Brady earning almost $15 million and Cassel guaranteed over $14 million.
