In a race against the clock, defensive tackle Jesse Williams is hoping to gain admission into UH-Manoa for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 12.
Because he is a graduate of a school in Australia, there are issues whether some of his classes meet UH’s admission standards.
The Warriors probably should consult with softball head coach Bob Coolen, who has signed several players from Australia in the past.

Bryce Kalauokaaea, who did not play last season after undergoing knee surgery, should be ready for spring training in April.
Kalauokaaea was moved to running back in training camp. But he is expected to compete at his natural position, quarterback, in the spring.

It was a tough finish for Davone Bess, who appeared to suffer a thumb injury during today’s playoff loss. He came back in the second quarter.
But Bess earned $20,000 as part of his playoff appearance fee. That’s in addition to the NFL rookie base salary of $295,000.
The NFL has different step-pay minimums depending on the year a player is credited with entering the league. As a 2008 rookie, Bess will earn $370,000 in base salary in 2009 and $445,000 in 2010.
For a player entering in 2009, such as David Veikune, the base salaries for the first three seasons are $310,000, $385,000 and $460,000.

I’m already liking this Jesse Williams kid. Seems to me he’s trying to get everything together to become a Warrior and wear that uniform on time. That is true about the academics from foreign countries not being accepted in the U.S. I used to have this problem with kids I recruited who graduated school in foreign countries. Trying to get their transcripts looked at and ensure they were equivalent to our school system standards were a pain!

Maybe guys like Jesse Williams and Wade Keli’ikipi will develop into dominant Defensive Tackles and be even better than the Sopoagas and Lafaeles of the world. They are young, raw, and have lots of time to develop there game to be able to dominate and play smash-mouth Warrior Style Football!

There are some tricky periods in the offseason, namely February and late June. In January, players are either ticked off or motivated by the way the season ended. So participation is high. Then there’s the realization that they’re in school, with no games for eight months. The tough ones push through.

Where do mosquitos go during the day?
Lately, I’ve been chewed up by mosquitos at night. They do that irritating thing where they buzz around your head.
Then you turn out on the light, and it’s hide-and-seek.
OK, I looked it up. Mosquitoes are nocturnal.
And they track their prey by detecting carbon dioxide from a distance.
Really ? wow…these guys bite me 24/7. I guess I’m in the dark. Williams has been wanting to be a warrior like forever….why the new discovery now ?

My theory on mosquitoes is bitter blood. I have the common “O” type blood and what I call sweet blood. My dad had type “B” and mosquitoes never touched him. Fortunately mosquitoes are not much of a problem in Arizona, unlike the tropical climates.

UH admissions has no problems processing foreign students, especially from Asia, perhaps Williams should major in Japanese language…and dont cite football as an activity.

bighilo I was told by an Aussie at the La Tech game that aussies go to school only to the tenth grade, with three options-quit school to do whatever, go to trade school, and for those wanting to continue to college they attend 2 more years of classes. That’s where the core requirements may not be met for a U.S. college. Totally different requirements to finish school…

RE: Mosquitos… When Aaron did his paper on dry ice last year, we learned the sometimes dry ice is used to keep mosquitos away, since when dry ice sublimates, it releases carbon dioxide, which the mosquitos are attracted to.

Made fro the African Daisy plant,. They extracted a chenmical called pyrethrins. The stuff was unreal. Mosquito starts buzzing in the room, you just sprayed it around a little and zp they either got dead or ran away. It was the best stuff around. If you can find it, your probelms are solved. I think some larger company bought them out and did away with the product so we can buy the less effective stuff they sell.

Well, the bonus count stops at one for Bess. Ugly game for the Dolphins and especially Pennington, but hey, the Ravens are known for their D, and it’s still a remarkable turnaround season. Bess made the most of his catching opportunities, that’s for sure.
I think UH fans can do the “first down” signs … in the first quarter.

The playoff money isn’t a big deal for Bess in the long run…the big thing is that Bess did well in his first playoff game, made a big play, came back from injury, and Miami’s other starting WR (top 10 draft pick) disappointed.
That sets up Bess well to get a nice bump on his next contract, and I’m guessing that the increased contract value is way more than playoff money.
The bright spot about Bess getting injured is that he came back from it and showed his toughness…that is the type of player that Parcells likes.
I wish Miami could have won the game, but they couldn’t afford the turnovers they had and the Ravens were better today. So, I’m trying to look on the bright side for Bess.

Hawaii game attendees (I call them that cuz, they’re really fans) are notorious for not participating a vocal cheers. Sitting in the prime season ticket seats, it is rare to see any of the local guyz or galz participating in the organized cheers, noise making (when UH defense is calling for it) or any of the efforts by others to get them going. They don’t even get off their butts when the Warriors enter the stadium or at kick-off. They will raise their arms when a wave is going around but will not stand.
This even went on in ’07 when Hawaii was winning all the games. Any idea why? IMHO, this goes way back to high school when, if you were a guy, it wasn’t cool to be sitting in the fan section and yelling for your school.
I would really like to see UH games be a real college game experience!

Wena only saw the “Wena” part, and took it. She’s been locked in Devon’s room playing Guitar Hero. She’s actually pretty good. I, however, might be the worst drummer. Even on the Easy mode, I struggled with “Hotel California.” I got booed off stage once.
When I was in college, I used to stand and yell. (That was back in the day when students actually had good seats.) We used to read Ferd Lewis’ stories on the opponents, then heckle them when they came in. I try to convince myself that it was because I was a big fan. But in hindsight, I think it’s because I’m an attention ho.
Too bad the UH home crowd isn’t like the UH crowds at the road games.
I think having the players’ parents and Ronnie enliven the road crowds.

It’s never too early to debate who’s quarterbacking the Redskins next season.
If Jason Campbell isn’t the answer, many fans want to skip over aging Todd Collins for Colt Brennan. The hero of the Hawaiian Islands reminded me of Sonny Jurgensen during the preseason with his playmaking ability.
If fans aren’t happy with how Jason Campbell played in 2008, perhaps Michael Vick would give the Redskins offense a boost.
But let’s play hot stove league all the way. There’s a free agent passer coming loose on Jan. 20 that might help the Redskins. Someone who can play wildcat formation with the best.

If Colt keeps playing great again in pre-season, he will definately become the Nr. 2 QB. Campbell, I think, is near his peak in performance and if he does not show serious and sustained improvement this year, Colt will be the starter in 2010. If not, somebody will snatch him up. There will be a big need for QB’s in 2010, the class will be much thinner than this year.
I would love to see him in Miami and than add RGM to the team.
With Colt at QB, Bess and RGM at slots, Miamis deep threat would suddenly be very real.
I don’t think I’d call Vick a passer. As a longtime Redskins fan, I’d have to rethink my level of fan-ness. I also don’t particularly like owners (and executives) who micromanage. Let the coaches and gm make the roster and draft decisions.

i don’t see it in flacco, but he’s got a good running game and defense to hide behind. he just has to not screw up and make mistakes. the offense doesn’t solely rely on him.

Miami normally only uses 1 slot receiver. They actually only had 3 receivers active for this game since they were mostly going to use 1 or 2 WR sets…they even had formations with *0* receivers, instead using 2 TEs, 2 RBs, and a FB.
So, don’t expect to see Bess and RGM on the field for Miami.
The D sure doesn’t have to worry about 4 WR sets when a team doesn’t even have 4 WRs active!

I just finished watching (and fast-forwarding through) the Dolphins game. Well, the Ravens dee was pretty formidable (I don’t feel so bad about the ‘Skins loss to them now) and I liked the way the Miami offense adjusted their offense with some success. Auntie Liz is very proud of our boys- especially Davone, who not only played well but showed his toughness and determination.
I hope what when Colt is finally on the field during a regular season game, he has an offensive scheme built for him like Flacco has… and a defense that complements.

I only seen Manti Te’o and Stan Hasiak playing so far, not sure if anymore home grown talent stay playing but this game got some athletes! They got Stan Hasiak playing guard and I’ve been watching him, he seems like he could be a dominant Guard rather than Tackle. His size is intriguing but he moves pretty well for a big guy. I hope he signs the Warrior LOI instead of the Bruins.

Unfortunate for the Dolphins to lose the way they did. Ravens defense is awesome though and they are a tough team for anybody to beat. I hope they see Davone’s worth and sign him a multi-year million dollar contract. As an undrafted rookie receiver he outplayed just about all the other rookie receivers. He was obviously the best slot receiver in the draft and got shafted! He’s the best receiver on the Dolphins roster period!
Pauoa Boy- I also like that Davone is wearing #15. Talk about REPRESENTING!
Anyway, again good luck to the coaches out on the streets during this period of recruiting. Only a little over a month before LOI signings. Here’s hoping that all our verbal commits and some surprises sign the Warrior dotted line.

congratulations to davone bess and samson satele. now did i hear right that this season was the greatest turn around in nfl history?
so, if i were coach mack, in february i would bring samson, davone, and colt, since they may be home and have them talk to all the returning warriors about commitment, work ethic, and heart. what better trio than those folks?

Well, Davone and Colt are supposed to be back in the islands for sure in February (Colt’s got a charitable event appearance at the Willows on Feb. 3). Davone is said to be hanging around for six weeks, I’m not sure about Colt but I’m sure it won’t be a day trip. If Davone/Colt can help “coach up” some of their fellow Warriors while they’re here, that would be awesome.

i went off to my friend’s house, ate noodles from the manapua truck, went to best buy and the wahine bball game and there’s only been 19 posts in between?
talk about frustrating though. the wahine bball team. well. i’m a fan of all uh sports, but its hard to watch. sure we have kanekoa hurt, but someone needs to step up. i don’t know how good colorado is, but we went down by 14 or so in the first half. tied it up in the 40s in the 2nd, and then they go on a streak and we go down by 19. in the garbage time of the last few minutes we cut into the lead and only lose by 12. i don’t know how many excuses bolla has. the girls were playing hard. but if you thought the men’s team stood around when they first came up against the zone, you should see what the wahine do or not do.
i’m no basketball expert and don’t pretend to be one like jason, but it is really tough to watch.

That reminds me, one of my friends at church asked how many different kinds of engineering there are, cause a bunch of the college kids are going into different engineering fields. I had interesting things to say about civil engineers … Nothing but good things to say about electrical engineers. I even tried to explain what Garret does (to the best of my limited ability).

Jason, there are all kinds of different titles for engineers in my field now in industry. At my previous company, the cool title to have lately was Systems Engineer, as those jobs paid more and were generally more interesting (lots of design and challenging problems instead of just doing what others designed). Later on I got promoted to the title of Research Engineer, which was more descriptive and brought more interesting work.
Because my new company is so small, I end up doing a lot of the (to me) boring management and administrative stuff instead of getting to do the fun Engineering stuff. So, I have the boring title of President. I look forward to the day where we grow enough or we sell the company so I can go back to being a Research Engineer.

I forgot to mention one dish for our New Years’ celebration…poke. I don’t know how I forgot to list that with the other stuff! I’m so glad that my kids don’t eat poke yet…they seemed to be scared of the name and worry that the food with “poke” them. More poke for me! Once they try it they will love poke because they love all types of sashimi.
It is nice that the Hawaii Bowl had the biggest increase in attendance this year among all bowl games. That isn’t a surprise since UH didn’t play in the Hawaii Bowl in 2007 and Notre Dame was in the 2008 bowl.

The Utah-Alabama game had higher ratings than UH’s Sugar Bowl game. I didn’t realize that the Sugar Bowls for UH in 2008 and Utah in 2009 were among the lowest-rated BCS games ever.
Adding another BCS Bowl seems to have brought down the BCS ratings…and it doesn’t help when the WAC and MWC teams play in BCS bowls at the bottom of the BCS TV ratings.

SI writes that adding a “BCS buster” spot have been great to show that MWC and WAC teams can compete with the BCS schools, but the MWC/WAC schools don’t bring the same TV draw as the BCS conference schools. The facts are that the Pac-10, Big 12, Big 10 and SEC bring in the TV ratings…which is why they get so much more TV money for their regular season games than the other conferences.

You are correct, Faith is the one that says that the “poke will poke her mouth”. Mika used to eat the poke but she doesn’t anymore…lately she has been trying to be just like her big sister in everything. Mika wants to have the same teachers as Faith, dress like Faith (whenever Faith outgrows something Mika is happy to wear the hand-me-downs), write and read like Faith, etc.
Mika even started to learn Math since her Faith is so good at math–so, now when we do the flash cards for multiplication, Mika gets the easier ones and Faith gets the harder ones (up to 11×11).

oh- Jason- I found out some cool stuff about my Grandfather today (Korean stuff).
I think they should use the same system that determines which team gets into BCS games, but instead of having five separate bowls, make it a playoff. That way the reward for a Utah or Boise State will be to keep playing on. The top top two teams get two byes, Nos. 3 and 4 get a bye. That works out, I think.

I haven’t wanted to teach the multiplication table for 12 yet because I figured Faith needed to work on her writing skills more. She is getting good at writing postcards and letters to people, and she spells most of the words on her own.
Faith’s school brings in a special math teacher just for her to have 1-on-1 math instruction 3x per week. They do word problems, math exercises, workbooks, and she really enjoys it. I’m still surprised at how she gets 1-on-1 instruction in math, reading, etc. I love this school district!
High school coach seems to tell the LA Times that USC doesn’t exactly follow the rules during recruiting.
I didn’t get a chance to blog on yesterday’s topic, and not sure if this is a faux pas or not, but will take my chances…
….I just wanted to say that Leo Goeas is a KS Alum (c/o ’85 one year younger than me), and I think he would be an outstanding addition to the coaching staff. Nice to see his success as an OL at UH and in the Pros.
I think I took Leo juice one day after a KS football game because my friend dared me to give it to the boy I liked, and I chickened out and Leo was right in front of me so I gave it to him and kind of ducked away. I think he thought I was a little weird. Ha.
Too bad they don’t let you do the juice thing anymore. Too many rules at Aloha Stadium.

IMHO Hawaii fans would have a really hard time trying to follow the Warriors for a play-in game on Christmas then a semi-final game on New Years’ Day and finally a NC game a week after NYD….but I’d be so envious of anyone who did!

According to Scout.com, Hawaii has 30 verbal commitments right now. 21 are to high scholl recruits and 9 to JC recruits. I realize that we are taking a page out from the airline industry and “overbooking seats”. Do any Tsai-kos know how many scholarships that actually have available? And how many grayshirts do we have that committed in 2008 for scholarships in spring 2009?

Last year, after the Anniversary Party, $1,000 was donated to Na Koa on behalf of the Tsaikos. This was money raised from the raffle tickets. I am sure that if everyone gave a little, what they can afford, we can do a lot better than that. Their lowest membership level is $100 but I am sure they will accept donations below that.
