The final episode of the best television show, “SportsNight,” was entitled, “Quo Vadimus” — Latin for “where are we going?”
The English translation was asked (peppered with a little French) yesterday in, of all places, a church foyer. Two season-ticket holders who had a miserable Christmas Eve demanded answers.
Because I’m a sports reporter, with nearly unlimited access, I, of course, had no answers.
Coach Mack said what everybody else has said: UH needs to cut down on sacks.
That also was the emphasis after the Sugar Bowl, which is why the Warrior quarterbacks spent the entire spring working under center. It was why Jake Heun was recruited, and why Aaron Kia practiced as a tight end.
But then Heun and running back David Farmer were injured in training camp, and injuries led to a shuffling on the offensive line, and the run-and-shoot wasn’t effective with the QB under center and …
Quo vadimus.
Then somebody mentioned that defensive back Ryan Mouton left Hawai‘i yesterday, and all of sudden it hit how much he’ll be missed — and not just as a player.
What made Mouton important was his ability to transcend cliques. The best Warrior team in years — the one in 2006 — also was one separated into a few groups. The alpha group was led by Samson Satele, and his willingness to include Colt Brennan into the fold solidified the offense. Brennan set the records that year, but it was Satele who led the team. Some claimed he was the offensive line coach that year.
Mouton also had that impact. Mouton and Keao Monteilh were the leaders of the secondary. Mouton also pushed his roommate, wideout Malcolm Lane, to become a more aggressive player. Everybody liked and respected Mouton.
More than anything, the Warriors need a leader next year, somebody who can interact with all groups. It should be John Estes. More likely, it will be Rocky Savaiigaea, if he can stay healthy. And if he’s serious about it, JoPierre Davis also is ready to step up.
So maybe that’s the answer. The Warriors will go as far as somebody will lead.

Sorry to hear that Funaki is going to be switched to RB. While GA proved to be the starter, IF could have used more effectively if he was substituted more often. Because of his style of play he seemed to get the crap beat out of him by the 2nd half and lost focus but still could have been effective at times while GA gained perspective from the sidelines.

  9. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2008 5:34 am

I didn’t mean to be “sly.”
But it dawned on me that the answers won’t come from recruiting or coaching changes or scheme changes. The Warriors just need someone, like Samson Satele or Ryan Mouton, to step up and be the bad-ass leader. They need somebody to drive the summer workouts. I think Rocky has the personality, but he doesn’t have the playing time. Maybe it has to come from Funaki or Alexander. But every big-time UH team had one. It usually came from the offensive line. Like Vince Manuwai. Vince was scary.

  10. Pride. December 28, 2008 5:36 am

808ike. LWJ is a sprinter, not a dancer. He needs to run in the old style offense where they create a hole for you in a specific spot, you give him the ball and tell him to explode through that hole. Right now we’re trying to get him to go laterally and feel for the soft spot and the explode when he finds it.

I believe that he would have been successful in that offense that Notre Dame ran, where you put him eight yards behind the line of scrimmage, hand him the ball, and by the time he hits the line of scrimage he’s running 35 miles an hour. Our offense unfortunately is more suited to Pilares and Libre. LWJ needs to run north-south. He has a more difficult time going east-west and then changing direction and going north-south. He has a difficult time because he is just too fast. I wish we could run a few plays out of the old USC I or old Redskins Ace formation to better utilize his skills.

  18. Garret December 28, 2008 9:51 am

I agree, leadership is a key for any team…but leadership is especially important for a team in transition like the Warriors.

  19. Garret December 28, 2008 9:54 am

I hope that La Tech wins today. UH lost. BSU lost (to the #3 choice for MWC bowl teams). Fresno State lost. If La Tech loses, the WAC will end up 0-4 and the commentators will talk about that all offseason…and they will have the facts to back them up.

This is just the third bowl trip in the history of Louisiana Tech football, and the program isn’t taking this game lightly. Its last bowl was in 2001 when the Bulldogs faced a Clemson team that decided to try in the Humanitarian Bowl, leading to a 49-24 Tiger win. The other post-season game was a 34-34 tie against Maryland in the 1990 Independence Bowl. That’s it. So while staying close to home might not seem like a great reward for a 7-5 season, for second year head coach Derek Dooley, getting the national college spotlight — , even though 94 percent of the sports world will be watching the Broncos-Chargers game — it’s big.

The WAC already took it on the chin with Fresno State losing to Colorado State in the New Mexico Bowl, and a home loss for Tech would be disastrous for the conference. Northern Illinois has the athletes and the talent to win, and if it can pull this off, all of a sudden the MAC might vault ahead of the WAC in terms of respect; at least for a moment or two.

    Cliques? Divided we fall.

Individual chest-beating celebrations and clique-ishness says to me- immature, insecure, self-centeredness.

For the Warriors to be the best they can be, they must be ONE TEAM.

  21. Garret December 28, 2008 9:57 am

The Baltimore Sun made a dig about UH…they didn’t have to put things this harshly.

News item: Notre Dame salvaged a winning record with a 49-21 victory over Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl.

My take: The Warriors were actually favored when that matchup was announced, which proves even the oddsmakers got caught up in the Notre Dame anti-hype. If they were horseplayers, they would have factored in how far down Notre Dame was dropping in class.

  22. Garret December 28, 2008 10:04 am

UH needs to cut down on sacks.
That also was the emphasis after the Sugar Bowl, which is why the Warrior quarterbacks spent the entire spring working under center.

the run-and-shoot wasn’t effective with the QB under center

Brian Smith was the OL coach at Portland State and Mouse Davis/Jerry Glanville are definitely friendly towards UH. Mouse tried having his QBs go primarily under center for the 2007 season…and found out that it didn’t work for them and Mouse put the QB back in the shotgun.

JJ used to have QBs under center more and eventually shifted to having QBs in the shotgun. Mouse at Portland State last year came to the conclusion that the shotgun works best for the run-and-shoot. Now the current UH coaching staff has come to the same conclusion.

At least this spring (and during their summer workouts) the QBs and WRs will get a *LOT* more reps in the base offense instead of spending the time learning how to have the QBs take snaps under center and drop back.

I think I understand. Its like at my work place…we needed a leader years ago. We suffered from lack of leadership for several years…decisions took a very long time to make. Often issues were pass boiling point that further breakdown of relationships. People just did their own thing and no strong bond pulled us in anyone one direction…more like multiple self serving small goups going in different directions not achieving any greatness and any one thing. People just put in time and nothing extra. No vision. Once we got a strong good leader in a manger, change was hard but good. Good things happened because we worked towards it and new leaders emerged along with a common vision and that extra energy to go beyond just punching the clock but being the best in what we do. Our FB team needs those kinds of leaders to help us overachieve..or at least accomplish great things. Can’t be someone just knighted but guy (s) that has leadership qualities either learned or born with or both. Sometimes its not obvious to other who that is…or even to that person…but someone who is honest, respected, hardworking (lead by actions and not just words), good communicator of sorts, and courageous. No clue who that is but if its Rocky…or Estes…then go get um bradas ! Lead us to victories in 2009 !

  24. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2008 10:11 am

Pride is correct about LWJ’s running style, when he’s healthy. He had some sort of foot injury for most of this year.
I think Pride is correct that UH can make some changes while still maintaining the framework of the four-wide principles. Instead of aligning LWJ to the side of the quarterback, he can align behind the quarterback. UH ran a version of the Pistol for 10 plays in 2007. And UH could always use a bigger slotback (tight end) in certain situations.

I searched the SSC for the AddaJoe & Stretch, but we were sitting above them rather than across from them so I missed them. However, the Tsaiko traffic cone was there.

This was a hugely disappointing game – UH gave it away and the post-game comments from Coach Nash, Roderick Flemings, and the announcers were unsparing in their analyses.

Cannot stay on-line for two reasons – have a ton of work to do before a 3 pm meeting plus seriously brused but no broken bones couple of fingers on my right hand after getting it caught in the back hatch door of the car while putting on the new car cover so so it’s really awkward to use a keyboard. .

BTW – Mahalo from Saturn The Dog for the four Tsai-kos and a friend who helped moved his doghouse from the backyard into the carport. In addition, BG gave us a big rug he was planning to throw away which DrDoc cut into two pieces to line the doghouse floor.

Fingers really hurt – have to go.

    mano1- I agree.
A natural leader will emerge when the individuals decide to put the team first and themselves next.
A leader can be appointed, but without total buy-in from the individuals, we will continue to see shot feet and ego penalties.
    How to get total buy-in?

Each player seeks individual truth in the reason for his participation on the team, BELIEVES that he loves and is loved by his Higher Power, and love his teammates more than himself.

    The rest is just football.

  39. FloridaTed December 28, 2008 10:42 am

    Good morning/ afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Finally back “home” from Jacksonville. No internet for almost a week, brutal, lol.

Not much to add about the football team, or the BB team for that matter.

The biggest danger is when teams in transition (still learning, not there yet, etc.) actually start thinking that they’re good. It takes away 30% of effort right from the start.

Notre Dame always had the talent, but the Hawaii Bowl was the first game where they put it all together all season. They played with passion and effort, whereas the Warriors didn’t come to play and everybody seemed shell shocked from the end of the first quarter on, including the coaches. We all saw that shell shocked look in all our losses this year.

The BB team counted CSTU as a win and again the 30% rule applied.

    ST,

Your lead in is right on and addresses exactly what we need.

Coming up will be another transition year for the Warriors, but with excellent talent coming in. We shall find out in a hurry what this coaching staff is made of, much more so than the past season.

I really don’t know what’s going on with this BB team……..

  42. brew808 December 28, 2008 10:58 am

My 2 cents Re: Team Leadership –

TEAM LEADERSHIP is critically important! Out of the list of past leaders cited by ST – only Owens and Mouton were “outside” guys. All the rest (we need to include Colt for 2006-07) were “inside” guys, heavily involved in every down. That is also part of the formula – IMHO. You can be a vocal leader, or more importantly, leading by example (play/intensity on and off the field, and on the side-lines, in the class-room, cheering for other UH sports, etc.). For Colt, it partly started w/ throwing up during the SC game on national TV. We also caught glimpses of his locker-room/side-line pep talks. I don’t think we realized how big a leadership loss the team took with Colt’s graduation.

I was hoping Adam Leonard would take up some of the slack. But he seemed to get injured and not step up. Same w/ Solly – too quiet. You could see the intensity of the D- (and Team) when Mouton was in the game making big plays but alas – he too was hurt much of the time. There was NO ONE on the O- side to pick up the leadership role. Funaki was caught up in the QB shuffle. He is a leader – IMHO – and I continue to suggest having his take the lead on special teams.

    What do you think? 😯 😀 8)

  51. Not an Expert December 28, 2008 11:30 am

My take on leadership: The majority of times leadership comes to the forefront when there has been success or an accomplishment by a group of people. Leadership is usually a gauge. Did you ever hear any successful company or sports team who is successful not have good leadership? When you here of failures, mediocrity, lack of leadership/management second guessing is rampant.

From coaching experience, to bad play calling, to poor technique, to the lack of team unity, all comes to the forefront. GM our head coach is probably pondering making some important changes. He will not win a popularity contest but it will be decisions that he believes what will be best for the team. The old cliche is that leadership comes from the top and having a great supporting cast that can transcend that leadership to the rest of the group.

For those who are disappointed I believe we must appreciate what is accomplished by these athletes. Our sports teams are not coveted with 4 and 5 stars athletes. If it was all our coaches will look great and be considered great leaders. A handful of these type of athletes cannot carry the whole team.

    PRIDE,
Thanks! Couldn’t get back on site until now. A few years ago, saw
his high school video and if my mind serves me right, he is a gap
shooter than cutter. He is designated a hole to hit, when he’s gets his
feet moving, then he’s able to cut and elude defenders. It seems like, in
UH scheme, RB reads o-line, finds hole, cuts, then gets moving north-
    south.

ST has ESP. He answered second question, in regards to OC
designing some plays to capitalize on LWJ abilities.

Eh, wait! How come nobody invited us?!?!?! 👿

  70. J-Dog December 28, 2008 12:28 pm

Somehow I’m not sold on JoPierre Davis being a leader. When Coach Mack called all the players together on the sideline during the Hawaii Bowl, JoPierre was far away from the rest of the team and was just down on one knee.

  71. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 12:33 pm

Jason Campbell looks AWESOME today. gO Skins!

    Kymry reports and ST sighting.

  72. NYUH December 28, 2008 12:39 pm

Bess having a pretty good game. 3 catches in the 1st half and positive punt return yards. Some good PR for Hawaii by the announcers.

  73. kymrykauai December 28, 2008 12:42 pm

Yep it was him and I was able to say hi and introduce myself.

  74. brew808 December 28, 2008 12:48 pm

    Poor ST… celebrity… hounded by his adoring fans… his posse… his groupies…. his Tsaikos…. 😀

  75. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 12:48 pm

Kymry- did ST wonder if you brot cookies?

Lessee if Skins can keep the momentum to the very end. I hope so. Campbell looks like the QB he wants to be!

  76. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 12:51 pm

I just wanna see cooley get a TD. Argh skins fumble. Just saw Colt chewing gum on the sideline.

  77. Ralph December 28, 2008 12:52 pm

Raider Nation rules the day, beats the Bucs…49’ers, redskins, who is cheering and who is crying at halftime..Brew is quiet in his corner, is the niners in trouble in the bay

  78. brew808 December 28, 2008 12:54 pm

    Raiders still have … al….

    ’nuff said. 😈

  79. Ralph December 28, 2008 12:57 pm

doesn’t Al have any sons to take over the organization-he got to be in his 70’s or 80’s

  80. Stretch December 28, 2008 12:59 pm

The Tsaikos have an al also…. Are we as dysfunctional as the Raiders??

  81. Ralph December 28, 2008 12:59 pm

he shouldn’t have hired lane kiffen, to inexperienced for a HC job…he needs to find another Madden…

  82. brew808 December 28, 2008 12:59 pm

…if Al had any offspring… they probably got fired! 😈

  83. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:01 pm

    Hey…. I just noticed that there’s an “al” in Ralph…. 🙄

  84. Garret December 28, 2008 1:02 pm

Forget about just buying pizza, check out what Pennington bought Samson and the rest of Miami’s OL:

You want to know why Chad Pennington’s teammates like him so much?

He just bought flatscreens for his entire offensive line.

  85. Garret December 28, 2008 1:06 pm

Bess leads Miami in receptions in the game…hope they win the game and make the playoffs!

  86. Garret December 28, 2008 1:07 pm

I just read 3 bios of Al Davis and none of them mentioned any children.

  87. Stretch December 28, 2008 1:08 pm

    Dallas is going DOWN!!!

  88. oxymoron December 28, 2008 1:13 pm

I’m NOT interested in the basketball tickets. Who wants to watch them lose to a no-name program again? I can’t take it anymore!! Arghh!! I’m just wondering how much of a pass Coach Nash gets, because there’s no improvement since he’s taken over. The Hawaii fans, most of whom are bandwagoneers, are dying to get behind a team they can be proud of. As a basketball fan, I can’t take mediocre basketball at what should be the D-1 level.

  89. Stretch December 28, 2008 1:17 pm

    I must repeat…..

    Dallas is going DOWN!!!

  90. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:18 pm

…but at least the ‘boys season continues after this weekend…..

The stars at night, are big and bright,
deep in the heart of Texas,
The prairie sky is wide and high,
deep in the heart of Texas.
The sage in bloom is like perfume,
deep in the heart of Texas,
Reminds me of, the one I love,
deep in the heart of Texas.

The coyotes wail, along the trail,
deep in the heart of Texas,
The rabbits rush, around the brush,
deep in the heart of Texas.
    The cowboys cry, “Ki-yip-pee-yi,”
deep in the heart of Texas,
The dogies bawl, and bawl and bawl,
deep in the heart of Texas.
    😀

  91. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:21 pm

Hey…thinking of ‘boys fans (other than A-Joe’s date)…. haven’t heard from Rob25 in awhile. Did she and family head to LV yet? 😯

  92. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:25 pm

Hmmmmm…. how are the ‘boys doing now? 😯

  93. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:29 pm

Oxy – Your #88 is the reason JD da AD reported never cracked a smile during last night’s game…. And it’s pretty bad for Wahine and other UH sports too. Tough economy. Tough entertainment value. Tough choices for fans. 😯 🙄 😯

  94. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:31 pm

    …reportedly… 😳

  95. brew808 December 28, 2008 1:34 pm

Late question…. Is “Tsukiji” the Todai/Makino-Chaya-like place at Ala Moana that serves king crab legs? Also, are cattle-calls over for the season/year? 😯 😀

  96. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 1:38 pm

  100. 99club December 28, 2008 2:14 pm

    How ’bout them Cowboys? Bwahahahahaha!

Switched over to the Miami game and enjoyed seeing two Warriors do their thing. 11-5 Patriots sit at home. Unreal. Sorry about your Jets ST. Quo vadimus applies to their coach and QB, I guess.

  101. brew808 December 28, 2008 2:14 pm

Nedney FG is good. Niners win and finish 2008 w/ a (ok) 7-9 record.

  103. Nalani December 28, 2008 2:19 pm

    I’m interested in the tickets.

Did i mention that today is Shelton’s BDay? I could get off cheap by taking him to the games tomorrow! Ha.

  104. 99club December 28, 2008 2:21 pm

    Nice one Brew!

  105. Nalani December 28, 2008 2:23 pm

    I’m interested in the tickets.

Hey, wanted to comment on Stephen’s topic. I totally agree. UH didn’t lack talent this year, they lacked that intangible to get them thru some close games. We could’ve easily been 9-3 going into the Hawaii Bowl. At that point, that could’ve also created a different outcome in the bowl game.

These intangibles come from coaches too, but mainly from the players themselves. I know a few players who CAN step up, but we will all have to wait and see who actually will. And it will be up to the coaches to recognize and reward the right behaviors so that those leaders can continue to lead.

  106. 99club December 28, 2008 2:24 pm

Chad Pennington doesn’t get a handshake from Brent. Oh well.

  107. myki December 28, 2008 2:24 pm

    Hi ST,

I’m also interested in the tickets for tomorrow night.

    Thanks!

  108. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 2:31 pm

Brew is so happy now. You’re welcome!

So does anyone else here think the Warriors and Redskins have more in common than Colt?

  109. 99club December 28, 2008 2:33 pm

Not a bad year for Dolphins fans…still the only undefeated season, Marino’s record intact, biggest turnaround since the ’30’s, and they’re in the playoffs. We get to see our Warriors go up against the Ravens next week. Bess is getting all kinds of props from the announcers. Pretty good blocking today!

  110. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 2:34 pm

    Hi Nalani. Hauoli Lahanau Shelton!!

  111. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 2:36 pm

    Dreams AND drools

  113. Pomai December 28, 2008 2:42 pm

Honesty now Brew808, how many thmes did it take for you to get #101 perfect?

  114. johnp December 28, 2008 2:43 pm

    Denver or SD? 🙂

  115. Pomai December 28, 2008 2:43 pm

    thmes = times

  116. Ralph December 28, 2008 2:44 pm

Brew, Jason, A House, and Whitey-all happy campers, the 49’ers beat a futile redskins team….skins need a qb next year, campbell is just a big guy without a nice passing touch and he can’t locate his open receivers quick enough

  117. Ralph December 28, 2008 2:45 pm

Jamarcus Russell is a half step better than ryan leaf, I hope there is a lot of improvement with the qb next year for the black and silver…

  118. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2008 2:45 pm

I’m interested in the tickets. If I win they go to Nalani! 😉

  119. dj December 28, 2008 2:45 pm

i’m interested in the tickets too

  120. d1島 December 28, 2008 2:48 pm

Hmmm….watch the WAC go 0’fer or cheer for Ding-o Dooley’s team?

    Discuss….

  121. whitey December 28, 2008 2:49 pm

I am interested in the tickets. if i win, pls give to #2 son of al.

Good afternoon Tsaikos. neva have power outage, but was cancelled by my internet carrier, so had to look for another. this new one is much faster than the old one, but also cost more.

  122. d1島 December 28, 2008 2:53 pm

I’m gonna have a hard time pulling for Monku Monku Derek and the Dummi-dogs but it’ll be harder listening to all the talk about the MAC overtaking the WAC. 🙄

  123. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2008 2:55 pm

We mention that the team had no strong leadership from with in. I’ve said it before, and must make notice of it again. The horrendous SB loss and the sudden departure of Coach Jones had a deep and lasting traumatic effect on the kids, particularly this year’s seniors. Try as they might, I don’t think they could fully recover from the “shell shock” of those two events.

This is why I feel that we can’t be too hard on the team or the coaches at this point. Next year however, is a whole new “ball game” so to speak. I expect that we have enough talent returning to be contenders once more. It is also vital that we keep on the same upward curve as far as recruiting goes.

Quo Vadimus? The team leaders will know the answer to that question as they begin to emerge over the next few months. IMHO

  124. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 2:58 pm

    Ralph. I agree.

  125. d1島 December 28, 2008 2:58 pm

Not a real Packers fan or worshipor of Favre but it was good to see him go out with a completion on his last pass (illegal forward lateral excluded)…if in fact, it was his last pass.

  126. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2008 2:58 pm

    D1-

Go ofer. And if we can help Coach Drooley’s opponents with some advice, let’s do it. Didn’t he do that to us when we played in the SB?

  127. Jason December 28, 2008 2:58 pm

I am interested in the tickets. We don’t get Rainbow Classic tickets with our student season package. 😀

  128. d1島 December 28, 2008 3:00 pm

    DPK,

    I hear you…..
    but it’s the MAC!!! 😯

  129. d1島 December 28, 2008 3:03 pm

Geez…Green Bay had two guys rush for 106 yards vs Detroit!

  130. whitey December 28, 2008 3:03 pm

good luck and best wishes to coach Gerke. moving is part of the game for coaches and i have no problem with that. Gerke’s leaving does not send any kind of message or negatives, but it does show that UH have good coaches who are coveted by other programs. Coach Mc’s job is to not only to field a winning team, but it is a feather in his cap when he is able to help any of his asst. if you are jealous about your asst moving, then you are in the wrong business.

  131. Jason December 28, 2008 3:04 pm

Here’s another contest: Since Stephen so aptly named today’s post “Quo Vadimus,” I have a free (lightly used) Sports Night box set to give away. This is the original yellow box set released in 2002, NOT the new blue 10th anniversary box set. I’m a huge fan of Sports Night (and anything Aaron Sorkin), so I’m going to pick up the 10th anniversary set for myself. 🙂

If you’re interested, say “I’m interested in Sports Night.” I’ll pick a winner this evening.

  132. whitey December 28, 2008 3:06 pm

I am interested in the tickets. for this is my 2nd entry, if win with this entry, give to the twins.

  133. HiFlyer December 28, 2008 3:07 pm

    “I’m interested in the tickets.”

  134. whitey December 28, 2008 3:08 pm

  135. d1島 December 28, 2008 3:08 pm

    I liked that series, too.

    I’m interested in Sports Night.

(no pressure, Jason, but you do realize that I am one of the few Tsaikos who know where to drop you off when it’s time to go home! j/k 😆 )

  136. Garret December 28, 2008 3:12 pm

    I’m interested in Sports Night.

But, if I win I insist on paying for the shipping costs.

  137. Jason December 28, 2008 3:13 pm

Now, d1, you don’t expect me to program a biased random number generator? 😉

  138. LizKauai (iPhone) December 28, 2008 3:14 pm

DPK. Mahalo. Football players are seen as tough guys and told to suck it up, man up, don’t whine , etc. But when you wear your heart on your sleeve and become a Believer – you expose your sensitive underbelly. The shock of last year still resonates. It takes time to build up that spirit again.

We are so lucky to have “fixed” the infrastructure – coach, AD, Chancellor Hinshaw watchdog, facilities, etc.
All will be good. All will heal in good time and with good will.

  139. d1島 December 28, 2008 3:21 pm

    Jason,
Not unless you can get a job at IGT! 😀

  140. d1島 December 28, 2008 3:24 pm

Ahh, nevah mind…Faith Hill convinced me to watch the Chargers-Broncos game 😉

  141. myki December 28, 2008 3:28 pm

  148. Nalani December 28, 2008 3:50 pm

    Howzit MeiLing, Liz…and mahalo DPK!

I’m (still) interested in the basketball tickets.

Our son Pono plays on the KS JV2 team. They are going to watch the UH game tomorrow night as a team with their coach Paka Bello, who works in the UH Athletics Dept. If we go to the game, Shelton and I will spy on the boys from afar. So much fun!

  154. Nalani December 28, 2008 4:00 pm

BTW taking Shelton to Assaggios (Ala Moana) tonight for his BDay w the kids. Kahai is home from staying at the hotel for a week with the UH team and we’re enjoying having him back.

Assaggios makes great Ossu Bucco, but my favorite is Eggplant Parmesan. Hmmm – getting hungry already.

  155. d1島 December 28, 2008 4:04 pm

    al,

Perhaps for tomorrow’s dinner I might suggest “Joe Pesci”?

  156. d1島 December 28, 2008 4:07 pm

    Howzit Nalani.

    Happy Birthday Shelton.
Have a great time at dinner.

  157. brew808 December 28, 2008 4:09 pm

Korean soap opera? –> Camelia CC? 😯

Once, at the Oakland airport, there was a church choir group about to board the plane. It was someone’s b-day (in the group). Before boarding the plane, they gathered around and sang her an awesome “Happy Birthday” in archipelago. That was chicken-skin beautiful…. 😀

  158. Nalani December 28, 2008 4:10 pm

Howzit D1….R we gonna see you at JV football again next year?

  159. brew808 December 28, 2008 4:11 pm

    I mean…. a chicken-skin beautiful moment, and really a gift to everyone in the boarding area…. 😳

  160. Jason December 28, 2008 4:13 pm

How do you sing in “archipelago”? You mean a capella? 😀

I’m interested in the tickets, entry #2.

  161. d1島 December 28, 2008 4:13 pm

    Nalani,

Interestingly, that question may have to be answered after some of the questions raised here are answered. 🙄

  165. d1島 December 28, 2008 4:21 pm

    Stretch,

Save that trick for baseball season; the games last longer!

  166. brew808 December 28, 2008 4:22 pm

    Darn that smartee-pants Jason, #160. Yes, I erred…. archipelago should have been arpeggio. I often mess up like that… Sorry Jackson…. 😳 😀 😳

  167. whitey December 28, 2008 4:22 pm

    Happy Birthday Shelton.

Jason, need to request info on how to copy something from the internet to post to this blog.

  170. HiFlyer December 28, 2008 4:25 pm

    Happy Birthday to Shelton

  171. Jason December 28, 2008 4:28 pm

Ah, arpeggio. I learned a new word. 😀

    d1: Just once. 😀

    whitey: http://www.webmasternow.com/copyandpaste.html

(Except whatever you copy, you post in the text box — that is, the box you type in when you make a post.)

  172. brew808 December 28, 2008 4:29 pm

Darn… I’m still wrong…. archipelago, arpeggio should have been a capella, just like Jason corrected me on in #160 and d1島 was also chomping at the bit to pile on…. As you can tell, I sing in the key of tone-deaf and often sing archipelago or isthmus to the local bullfrogs…. 😳 😀 😳

  173. HiFlyer December 28, 2008 4:30 pm

    🙂

  174. Stretch December 28, 2008 4:31 pm

  184. Jason December 28, 2008 4:46 pm

Stretch is just mad he had to take ENG 100 five times. I heard he finally passed when he took his professor out to the dark side …

  185. bighilofan2 December 28, 2008 4:48 pm

I think the way I can support our Warriors is to buy another set of season tickets in my favorite spot the second they open the ticket office

and the second most important thing I can think of right now is to encourage JEORDON HANOHANO to step up, be the leader, you’ve been given a blessing, a part of your life’s blessing. Coach has backed you up. Now back up the team.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GIFT AND YOUR BLESSINGS, JEORDON!!! BE OUR LEADER!!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

howzit again. just getting up from a small 3 hour power nap. meet with some of former players, friends and students who attended Whitworth University in Spokane. had good lunch at Thelma’s but all of a sudden got haw’n paralysis after got home you know the rest.

before I forget 2nd chance I am interested bball tickets

liked the Sports Night series on TV but disappointed it just stopped. The oddah show I like but ended up like Sports Night was Las Vegas.

  187. koakane™ December 28, 2008 5:00 pm

btw djmitcho pono, kawika, danilo and this oddah guy from punahou told me to tell you hi. took time to figgah who you was but they finally got it.

  188. Jason December 28, 2008 5:02 pm

I’m interested in the tickets, entry #3.

  189. A-House December 28, 2008 5:04 pm

    whitey:

I agree that one of Coach Mack’s most important job is to train someone to replace him. This is one of the most important facets of any “leader”, but, unfortunately, one of the most feared because the current leader does not want the other to replace him/her. However, if this happens, know that you did your job well!!

And, thanks for thinking of us and the Twins for the BB tickets.

  190. myki December 28, 2008 5:05 pm

I hope the third times the charm for the tickets.

  191. Nalani December 28, 2008 5:15 pm

  192. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2008 5:21 pm

Okay. I’m still interested in Nalani’s ticket.

  193. Da Punchbowl Kid December 28, 2008 5:23 pm

    “Tickets” that should read.

  194. A-House December 28, 2008 5:24 pm

First, a Happy Birday to Shelton and many, many more to come!!

Second, my apologies, and better late than never, it was nice to meet 808ike at the last tailgate and Murf and Kelli M at the anniversary party at Murphy’s.

Leaders, some say are “born” while others say they are “molded”.

Perhaps, the truth is some where in between where the person “born” with certain inate skills is given the opportunity to refine those skills and emerge as a “true” leader.

The “leader” may not necessarily be the oldest or most battle tested, but the “leader” is one who has gained the TRUST and RESPECT of his/her peers and is willing to lead, for good or bad, and that is the defining moment.

It will be up to Coach Mack and his staff to identify these players, talk to them, and support them. And, it should be NOW!!!

Man I’ve been talking about this leadership thing since the begining of the season especially after the ND debacle. Previous years someone has always stood and become a leader Samson,Colt,Ulbrich,Owens, point is there has always been one or two guys the whole team has looked up too and respected these guys would talk to not only their side of the ball but the other side as well. Last seson you could see Colt walking up and down those sidelines in the close games telling the D to hold or get the ball back and they responded alot of the time. Hopefully someone will step up to that role it’s definetly goota happen.

  199. bighilofan2 December 28, 2008 5:38 pm

  202. Pauoa Boy December 28, 2008 5:45 pm

My candidates for the leadership role this year especially on defense would be 2 guys that hardly played this year in Blaze Soares and Rocky Savaiigaea. Just the way they play would have generated some enthusiasm and got the D going as well as the whole team. These two are relentless and both have the killer instinct. I could see both of them becoming very vocal as well on the sidelines.

  203. koakane™ December 28, 2008 6:04 pm

well if you still need sporting event fix and not going to the other UH in season games then check out the AJA baseball dot com site. the league started the 09 season already. many of the players are ex high school, UH players and even some oldies but goldies 😯 you might know. the game are good and better yet its free. the AJA games are played at Ala Wai day time only, Hans L’Orange in waipahu and the Patsy Mink field in waipio (used to be called CORP). 😆 the web site mentions the team and its players a schedule of when the games are on. I will be catching some of these game so maybe see you at one. give 8) me a shout if your interested maybe we can hook up. plenty local players.

    Hi Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

Well, we are in Anaheim and will be heading for LV in the morning. It only took seven hours through some sick traffic. At times, we, I mean, I was doing 80 MPH but still it took an hour and a half longer because of all the returning holiday traffic. We’re not in Honolulu anymore.

The kids and I just got back from Joe’s Crab Shack. It was good, but almost as cold inside as it is outside and that was our first meal since leaving Stockton. Yes, I had Dungeoness (sp) crab and fried shrimp. The kids had a Surf and Turf burger and Club Chicken sandwich.

Sad to hear all of my teams really bit the big one. First, I must say I couldn’t even watch the Hawaii Bowl until the end. I heard about the BB score and then my Cowboys couldn’t have sucked any worse than they did the last two weeks. I’m left wanting for more…at least there is Vegas to drown my sorrows in. We are looking forward to Red Rock and watching some games in the Sports Book!

Take care everyone. Good luck to the ticket winners. I would grumble about Ajoe taking Stretch, but I wasn’t on the island and Stretch might be a sexier date.

Have a safe and Happy New Year’s and I will see everyone in 2009!

There have been some excellent posts on leadership by
    BREW808 #42, LIZK #28, #51, A-HOUSE #194 and others.If you don’t
mind, would like to put my 2 cents. There are a few features a leader
    possesses:
    1) The individual has an innate aura.
People are drawn to him/her. Drawn does not reflect fear of
    someone, handsomeness/attractiveness, or personality.
    2) The individual has the ability to motivate oneself and others.
Motivation of oneself shouldn’t be a problem. For the young
men, motivation of others will require the aid of coaches.
    3) Ability to make people around them better.
Having someone achieve things further than he/she thought
    was capable.
    4) Ability to set the example.
    5) Ability to overcome obstacle.
    6) Ability to challenge fear to get results.

Trying to keep it as simple as possible. There are others, just
    listing major items.

Bess got praised in this article.

Miami’s wide receivers were big factors against the Jets with one of Ted Ginn Jr.’s two receptions good for a 27-yard touchdown and rookie Davone Bess making six catches.

Bess remains Pennington’s go-to wide receiver. For the fourth time in five games he had six catches or more. On the Dolphins’ first scoring drive, Bess had back-to-back catches of seven and 13 yards.

  229. d1島 December 28, 2008 8:45 pm

    Kekoa,

Your topic early this morning in woman’s BB is correct. Players don’t
respond to him. The time when he was ill, the players responded to
the asst. coach and the players had an uplifting body language. They
    were excited to play BB.

  231. Garret December 28, 2008 8:46 pm

The Dolphins could lose their leader…amazing that Parcells has a contract where he could collect *all* the money for the 3 years left on his contract and take a job with a competitor when the team is sold after the season.

Team owner Wayne Huizenga, who is preparing to sell most of his remaining stake in the club, said Sunday after the Dolphins’ playoff-clinching victory that Parcells has talked about excercising an escape clause in his $16 million contract, which has three years remaining.

The clause would allow Parcells to walk away with all of the money owed to him – $12 million. He also would be free to join another team immediately.

With the Dolphins in the playoffs, it will close shortly after their final game, Huizenga said.

Huizenga reportedly wants to expedite the deal because he fears that taxes on capital gains could rise in the Barack Obama administration.

  232. Garret December 28, 2008 8:48 pm

Many teams would be interested in Parcells if he was available, especially after the amazing turnaround Miami had this year. I was surprised to see that someone would actually think that Al Davis would give up control to Parcells.

If Parcells were to leave, ESPN reported, several teams would be interested in his services, including Detroit, the New York Jets, Cleveland and even Oakland, which is run by 79-year-old Al Davis, whom Mortensen described as an “old friend” of Parcells.

  233. d1島 December 28, 2008 8:48 pm

    Garret,
Noticed that they used the fake screen to Bess to setup the go-ahead TD to Fasano; another sign that he’s making a big impact.
On to the play-offs! That’s a whole ‘nother level! Good luck to the former Warriors!

  234. whitey December 28, 2008 8:50 pm

a very good article in today’s Maui News about Coach Pete Carroll and his coaching dismeanor. a player, Christian Tupou, screwed up in practice by committing a personal foul and coach talked to him loudly, but did not scream in his face. sent Tupou to the bench, then coach went to talk to him and told him “Come on Christian, we don’t ever do stuff like that. Never!” The incident could have left Tupou frustrated and embarrassed. Instead, it made him wiser. He had coach to thank for that.

another point about Coach Carroll. “He’s more like a teacher in classroom. That’s exactly what did to me. He taught me a lesson.”

Get plenty more. Article written by Michael Lev or the Orange County Register.

So what’s the point about this? Exactly what we want Coach Mc and his staff to do, teach the warriors about football and life. Because they did not spend enough time teaching about the stupidity of personal fouls, poor tackling and blocking techniques, etc is one of the reason the season ended on a sour note.

  235. Garret December 28, 2008 8:50 pm

Texas offered only 1 QB a scholarship this season…and they sure chose a good one when they offered last summer. Gilbert will redshirt in 2009 (Colt McCoy will start of course) and he’ll be ready to play after that.

A state championship and Texas passing record didn’t come easy for Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert, as the Austin American-Statesman recounts.

The 6-4 Garrett, ranked as the nation’s No. 2 pro-style quarterback by Rivals.com, broke Graham Harrell’s Texas high school yardage record in the 4A title game.

    Kekoa,

No wives ’cause in the pic you notice that the Tsai Bros are strategically seated around the Princess!

  237. Garret December 28, 2008 8:53 pm

    d1shima,

Bess is the leading receiver for Miami regularly now and teams are having to game plan to stop him. They throw a lot of short passes to Bess, which all Warrior fans know he will catch and then get some YAC. So, now a fake to Bess is effective!

I forget if Bess signed a 1-year or 2-year contract before the season. If he signed just a 1-year deal, he’ll be looking at a *huge* raise after the season! If he signed a 2-year deal, he’ll get a raise and extension…but not nearly as much because he won’t have the leverage.

  238. whitey December 28, 2008 8:55 pm

    top 240!!!

  239. Garret December 28, 2008 8:56 pm

    whitey,

Excellent point and that is a good article. In my opinion, the best coaches are teachers…and through their teaching their players are motivated to improve. Locker room speeches and pumping up players before a game lasts only so long…teaching and treating players with respect is the key.

Of course I could be biased because my parents and I were teachers.

  240. d1島 December 28, 2008 8:58 pm

    Garret,
I find it interesting that in the NFL, Bess is making a place for himself with the YAC he gets. IIRC UGa’s gameplan was to limit that very thing for all of the UH receivers in the SB. They were pretty successful that day.
I wonder what the difference is?

  241. d1島 December 28, 2008 9:02 pm

    whitey,

Sounds like a little “One-minute Manager” at work by Coach Carroll.

  242. Garret December 28, 2008 9:04 pm

    d1shima,

In the NFL, scores are lower and teams cannot afford to give up too many cheap yards. Plus, there aren’t many WRs who regularly make NFL DBs miss…Bess has been singled out countless times this season for that exact ability because it is unusual at the NFL level. So, game planning is different in the NFL and the standard ways to limit YAC in college don’t work as well.

d1- re Bess and UGa- how many times have we seen Colt get daminated because of the SB (read the Redskins boards)…

And here comes Bess… given the chance to play his rookie year… demonstrating the key to last year’s offense- close communication, respect and luv/trust between QB and receiver. Not bad for a SB-losing player 😈

Still waiting for the Coltster to get his day in the sun and pull his team together.

  251. Garret December 28, 2008 9:16 pm

Teams cannot just go after the QB for the Dolphins because they are running an offense with a TE and RB that runs the ball regularly. They can do the power running game, which has to be respected. They got over 100 yards today from their RBs, which is not unusual for them.

Teams cannot just sit back, play loose on Bess and then slam him hard because he’s isn’t catching 10+ passes and the ball is spread around the receivers, TEs, and RBs…so, the cumulative effect of the hits is less than a featured WR in college. Plus, teams cannot afford to give up 5-8 yard gains regularly because Miami would get into FG range pretty quickly that way.

  252. Garret December 28, 2008 9:17 pm

Even more impressive I think is that Bess is regularly making the first defender miss on his punt returns. That is a skill that is valuable in the NFL, where field position is big and the scores are lower than college games.

    He makes outstanding downfield blocks.

  255. Jason December 28, 2008 9:40 pm

Time to draw the winner of the Sports Night contest … after I finish eating. Read post #131 for instructions if you want to get in a last minute entry. Contest is closed at 10 PM HST.

  256. Jason December 28, 2008 9:41 pm

Oh, and congrats to al for winning the tickets!

  257. d1島 December 28, 2008 9:41 pm

I was just looking at Oklahoma’s depth chart…how depressing 🙁
I’m not sure these people are of the same species as the rest of us….

    Top 4 OT’s are 6’5″, 6’6″, 6’7″ and 6’8″
    Top 4 OG’s are 6’3″, 6’5″, 6’5″ and 6’6″
    Back-up FB is 6’6″, 265

    CB’s are 6’0″, 189 and 6’1″, 202
    FS is 6’1″, 201
    SS is 6’3″, 230

  258. Garret December 28, 2008 9:42 pm

    Liz,

All the UH WRs enter the NFL as above-average or better blockers for the WR position. Bess, RGM, and Rivers were all exceptional blockers in college and that skill (and desire) doesn’t go away in the NFL.

  259. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER December 28, 2008 9:45 pm

Garret- yeah, I guess, our “system” was an NFL system, huh!

    😉

  260. Garret December 28, 2008 9:51 pm

    d1shima,

JJ got a 6’3″ 290-pound center (Joey Fontana) to commit to SMU who was offered by Arkansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Stanford, etc. I read one report that said he was 6’5″..even at 6’3″ that is a good height for a center.

If you really want to get depressed, check out Texas’ OL recruits for 2009. If you see their films also, you’d be amazed…they basically stocked up more than an entire OL over the summer. The recruits will probably all redshirt together and have a lot of years in the program together.

  261. Garret December 28, 2008 9:53 pm

    Liz,

Miami’s system is pretty far away from UH’s system. They use 1 and 2 TE sets, they have power runs, they have a RB take snaps from center and have the option to pitch it to another RB or throw the ball, etc.

However, Bess’ skills work in both systems. Miami needs one quick slot WR, and Bess fits well there. I wish they used two slot receivers because RGM would have fit their system also.

  262. d1島 December 28, 2008 9:53 pm

    ….and lest we forget UF’s depth chart…

    Their Top 4 OT’s are 6’6″, 6’6″, 6’6″, 6’6″
    Top 4 OG’s are 6’3″, 6’3″, 6’5″, 6’6″

They have no FB. “Just” Chris Rainey, Emmanuel Moody and Jeff Demps backing up Kestahn Moore at RB.

    “Diminutive” DB’s:
    CB’s are 5’10”, 185 and 5’11” 185
    FS is 6’0″, 200
    SS is 5’9″, 190

  263. al December 28, 2008 9:55 pm

    thank you!!!
ST and that kinda shy person and her spouse.

i’ll do the fatherly thing and send #1 and #2 sons to the game. they have been talking about attending a game.

  264. d1島 December 28, 2008 9:55 pm

    Garret,
I guess they’ll all “grow up” together 🙄

  265. labrat December 28, 2008 9:59 pm

Most of the teams in the Big 12 have linemen that size.

  266. d1島 December 28, 2008 10:02 pm

    labrat,

I’d bet that most teams in the Top 40 have linemen that size.

  267. d1島 December 28, 2008 10:05 pm

    Jason,

Hurry up and swallow da fuud already; I gotta work in the morning!

  268. d1島 December 28, 2008 10:10 pm

    I’ll check in the morning.

    Sports Night…
    errr, I mean Good Night.

    Oyasumina-Tsai….

  269. Jason December 28, 2008 10:13 pm

And … d1島 is the winner!

  270. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2008 10:18 pm

By the way, KymryKauai looks too young to have a nephew.

  271. Garret December 28, 2008 10:26 pm

    d1shima,

These guys are still in high school and may still grow a little more…

Mason Waters, #1 OT recruit in the country (via ESPN), 6’7″ 285-pounds
    Paden Kelly, #3 OT recruit, 6’6″ 280-pounds
    Thomas Ashcraft, #6 OG recruit, 6’5″, 290-pounds
    Garrett Porter, #40 OT recruit, 6’5″, 280-pounds

They also got the #2 and #8 TEs in the country (6’2″ and 6’5″), where at least one of them will probably end up on the OL.

They already started 2010 recruiting last summer (since their 2009 commits committed by May after the Junior Days). This year’s Texas team featured Colt McCoy throwing to Jordan Shipley. 2010 recruits spotted at Texas games this season included Colt’s younger brother Chase (a QB) and Jordan’s younger brother Jaxon (a WR).

At least *NINE* of the recruits will graduate high school in December and start school at Texas in January. So, the coaches do not need to worry about their NLI. I love that Billy Ray will graduate in December and wish that the high school counselors/coaches in Hawaii discussed this more with their players–it is common in Texas and rare in Hawaii for top recruits to graduate early. Getting an early feel for college and getting to go through Spring Practice is a huge advantage! The OL recruits tend to be among the most common for early graduation…so, after their redshirt year they will have gone through 2 Spring Practices and have had almost 2 years in the weight training program before they play as Freshmen!

Little recruiting tidbit for a recruit that everyone will hear about next year: William Gholston is going to graduate in 2010–he’s a cousin of Vernon Gholston and is a 6’7″ DE!

  272. Garret December 28, 2008 10:28 pm

Congratulations to d1shima for the Sportsnight prize!

Congratulations to Al for the tickets–it is great that his sons will get to go to the game.

  273. Koa-mahu December 28, 2008 10:29 pm

and the winnah of a free lomilomi is ……….jason. catch thebus to downtown and you’ll find me at my usual street corner.

  274. labrat December 28, 2008 10:55 pm

Hey Rich Ellerson gets to work with that 6’10” OT at Army next year.

  275. SteveM December 28, 2008 11:00 pm

Somewhat quiet tonight. I think some people will be in Las Vegas between tomorrow and New Years… Rob25 ohana, Garret, Mr & Mrs, A-House, Midori7, and Shannon from Bay area CA. Read there were some scheduling conflicts, but possibly a Cattle Call with Mr. las vegas.

las vegas — please post cattle call info (if any) in case there are other Tsai-kos quietly in town too…. and please check your excite email…got some bounces again. 😕

  276. brian smith December 28, 2008 11:09 pm

even with guys 6’6+ , dont think Brian smith would be successful !!

  277. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 28, 2008 11:19 pm

    Hola!!

If Tuesday night turns out to be a cross-state Colorado Championship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, I will hold a drawing for those who have picked the winner correctly – dinner for the winner and a guest at one of our favorite Italian restaurants..

Stay tuned for more information after the semi-final games: Vermont v Colorado State and Buffalo v Colorado. I’m not sure when the second game will be played.

Very small crowd at the Stan Sheriff Center tonight. I ran into a couple of people I knew, but as far as I could tell there were no other Tsai-kos in attendance. Saw Bob Nash off in the distance, however.

Some of the comments earlier today about no longer supporting UH basketball – and other sports – because the teams don’t win and the coaches suck really get me riled up. These are young men & women most of whom are not even old enough to go into a bar legally and not professional athletes getting paid huge chunks of change to perform well for us.

By turning our backs on them and not supporting them in bad times as well as when they win really sends the wrong message. Only a very few will make it as professional athletes, but most will be come leaders in other fields as well as parents who will help raise the next generation.

Was I happy with Wednesday’s performance by the football team and last night’s failure to play well in the second half of the basketball game? Of course not, but that’s irrelevent. All of us have made mistakes and errors in judgement – why should they carry these sins of commission or omission around their necks.

NOTE: If you don’t know the difference between the two sins, ask one of the boys from St. Louis or Damien. I’m sure they’d be glad to enlighten and inform you.

Bob Nash is in his transitional second year and quite honestly, he’s doing much better than I thought possible. Yes, the team screwed the pooch really badly last night by failing to play in the second half, but if we want to have them do well the next time out, we need to be there for them in good times and bad.

Even the greatest batters in baseball don’t get on base aboaut 60% of the time – and we don’t go berserk when they pop up or strike out.

Congratulations to Al – will try again tomorrow.

  278. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 28, 2008 11:22 pm

Whoops!! aboaut 60% of the time = about 60% of the time

  279. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 28, 2008 11:31 pm

Just checked the UH website – the first winners’ bracket game tomorrow will be Vermont v. Colorado State at 11 am; the second winners’ bracket game will be at 5 pm. The 1:30 game will be feature Coppin St. v. Pepperdine. UH will play George Washington at 7:30 pm.

  287. d1島 December 29, 2008 5:46 am

    Great Morning All!

    😀 I won something! 😀

Thank you, Jason. I look forward to my Sports Night Marathon!

Mahalo WassupDoc for the splash in the face of reality. It’s something the “adults” need every now and then….

  288. Stretch December 29, 2008 6:49 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

It’s rough to wake up early to come to Kauai againt after being off for 5 days. Not to worry, 3 days of work and 4 day off again!!

I wonder if there is going to be a contest this morning??

  289. duffer December 29, 2008 6:52 am

Props to Nalani’s brother Kaipo who opened the girl’s MIL season with a victory……..

Let me sneak in a Good Morning shoutout to all the villagers of the Tsaiko Nation before ST starts a new blog.

Congrats D-1 for that pressure-packed win last night. I know you were sweating bullets in anticipation of the outcome. Your patience was rewarded.

Liz ~ So sorry that the 49ers rained on your parade yesterday. Maybe if Colt asked the ‘Skins to either play him or trade him….nah! wishful thinking!

Maui No Ka Oe! Duffer & Whitey! Good sports news from the Valley Isle. I forgot to mention how Mrs. K was so impressed with the vast improvement of your roadways systems since ‘back in the days.’ Now if they could only connect Kihei with upcountry Kula….

  292. djmitcho December 29, 2008 7:36 am

Good Morning Everybody. I really hope it stops snowing here. I’m getting worried about my flight getting canceled tomorrow morning.

  293. brew808 December 29, 2008 7:43 am

    😆 ~•~~~~•~~Good..Morning..Tsaikos..and..Warrior..Nation!!!~~•~~~~•~ 😀

Have the rains stopped? I think the Tsaiko Ark building should continue. I’m sure that SteveM will readily volunteer as Captain, or certainly as 1st officer…. 😀

Kekoa – Any morning the eyes open up is a good morning! Of course, it’s better after the koppe. 😀

One word regarding that last contest of Jason’s that d1島 “won” –> FIXED!!! 😯

    49ers 49ers 49ers 49ers49ers 49ers49ers 49ers 😆

Already too many roads and traffic on Maui – IMHO.

Everyone have an AWESOME day!!! 😀 😯 😆

djmitcho ~ Be sure to call the airport manager to check on his supply of ‘de-icer!’ The snowblowing equipment should already be in use. Meanwhile, here at home…the weather is looking mild for now. Little spritzers here and there, but nothing like last week.

  296. koakane iphone December 29, 2008 7:48 am

Morning everyone and early good new 09 to all. Just shouting this out now cause never know what will happen come new year’s eve.

Congrats to Al winning dem tics and D1for the video.

  297. Kekoa December 29, 2008 7:52 am

W/Doc ~ Maybe you should have your *dinner winner – contest winner* have to pre-qualify by having to be present to win. One way to add a few more bodies to the SSC. Steak & Lobster would be a good draw!

  298. brew808 December 29, 2008 7:53 am

Oh yeah – congrats to al on winning the tickets! Good thing there’s only #1 and #2, cause a #3 would be in left home with the folks.

BTW – the title for this blog seems most appropriate –

    And the winner is … Al! 😀 😯 😆

  299. koakane iphone December 29, 2008 7:54 am

    What about Tuesday?

  309. brew808 December 29, 2008 8:07 am

  310. kymrykauai December 29, 2008 8:08 am

Lizk: mahalo for your play by play updates for yesterdays games…I kept everyone at our table entertained!

  311. brew808 December 29, 2008 8:16 am

Nice column by Ferd in this AM’s HA on Rich Ellerson and Ken Niumatalolo. Congratulations to both!

The HC at Air Force is Troy Calhoun. He took over for Fisher DeBerry a couple of years ago and seems to have continued the AFA winning ways. Wouldn’t it be (more) awesome to have another coach w/ local ties there too? 😯 😀

Okay – I hope we can now establish a working relationship (schedule) for FB games with the Academies! I hope JD da AD is working on this….) 😀 😯 😆

  312. Stretch December 29, 2008 8:16 am

  316. Kekoa December 29, 2008 8:24 am

Liz ~ One difference between Tsukiji Fish Market and where we had our Tsaiko Tsick Call in NOLA is location. The other is price. We paid only $10.99. Tsukiji is over $20 bucks. Their food quality and variety is the same, because they both care about freshness and preparation.

Slight edge to NOLA for adding Cajun flavored ingredients to their Sushi. Also, having a big pot of Brown rice available right next to the white rice was a plus.

It’s all about customer service in both of their presentations.

  317. d1島 December 29, 2008 8:26 am

    Koakane,

No can today; tom’w. is a possibility.
May be try Tell Ma… 🙂

  319. al December 29, 2008 8:33 am

there are quite a number of former UH players and coaches who are current head football coaches.

i’ll bet that would make a great contest.

ST- Whew! Mahalo for the tickets! Those seats were awesome!

Kinda Shy- M’lady, you, JD and your kamali’i were wonderful hosts. Thank you.

Al! N-joy the seats. And the extra perks that come along with it too. =)

And contrary to what everyone might believe, Stretch is a gentleman. That braddah knows how to treat a man on a date. I found myself captured by his cool calm demeanor. I felt safe with him. He sooo fun to be around.

Perhaps I got mixed signals. I thought our evening went rather well. I was taken aback with his decline of my goodnite kiss. Shucks. I now. I know. Too fast.

Hi Stretchie! Mahalo for a wonderful evening. Hey- be safe out there, K? You’re the only Stretchie I’ve got.

    No work too hard.

    Miss you.

Good morning all…hope everyone is safe after that small kine power outage we had this weekend…

Re. Post #321…ahhhhh, now we know who Koa Mahu is….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Good to see Maryanne is back…hey, where is Jason??

Team leadership is what we seemed to lack this year…at least not in the same vein as the leadership that Samson showed….like ST said, who will step it up next season and take the reins…it should be starting already if they are really serious about it….unsupervised workouts should already be starting for next season….

Kekoa: Great idea about being present at the final round tomorrow night.

If both Colorado teams make it into the final round after today’s semi-final games – Colorado State plays at 11 am and Colorado plays at 5 pm – then post your winning prediction anytime between the finish of the second game and tomorrow afternoon one hour before the championship game starts.

I’ll be more specific on the time later this evening. Currently, the game is listed on UH’s website as 7:30 pm, but various news sources have said that all UH games are scheduled for that time and that the championship game is at 5 pm.

All names selecting the first place winner will go into the drawing pool – one entry per person, please – and we’ll select the winner on Wednesday morning. However, in order to win the prize, you must have a ticket stub for Tuesday’s evening games. Off-island entries are welcome and they are the only ones excused from the last requirement. If a non-O`ahu resident wins, he or she can either donate the prize to someone living here who also attended the game or save the prize until you come home for a visit.

Off to work – my busy season is beginning to roll. Just got notices of more than a dozen legislative $$$ briefings in my in-box today.

Again, if you have UH or Aloha Stadium capital expenditure requests, please send them to me – swood at hokudotcom. I’ll see if something has been submitted and then get back to you.

Again, I hope to see some of you at today’s games – the Vermont team in particular is really something else.

    (J)J,
I will be attempting to leave the snowy confines of Spokane tomorrow morning. I fly direct to Kona from Seattle. I know I planned to be on Oahu on the 9th, but when I checked my flights, I leave Hawaii on the 8th.
For some reason I thought I would be there throught the 12th. If I do make to Oahu it will probably be the 6th or 7th. I will see what the schedule permits. If no can make it to Oahu, I will try in June I guess.

If John Estes is expected to be the leader, we’re in for it. The guy shrieked like a little girl on the sidelines when he sat on a wet bench and got his hair caught in a fan. Leader? Seriously?
